Please check your changes!

You did capitalize some words in Ring deutscher Pfadfinderverbände and Union Internationale des Guides et Scouts d’Europe - even in the interwiki-links to the french and the german Wikipedia. While doing so, you destroyed these links. Please check all changes to links before saving. And please remember, not all important words have to be upper case. There are some rules in english spelling, too, as far as I unterstand. --jergen 15:04, 4 November 2005 (UTC)

Sorry, I did it with the best of intentions, I thought them errors, as you do not capitalize some words, (like the words 'English' and 'German' and 'French', above, which in English are always capitalized). I do appreciate your additions and corrections and watching over the articles I post, you make them better, and together we get good information onto the Internet. I did not mean to upset you. Your brother in Pfadfinderschaft, Chris (kintetsubuffalo)

Sorry, if I sounded too upset; there are some different problems connected. First: I recalled the rules for language/country adjectives wrong, sorry for that - I just looked it up in my dictionary. Second: Your changes to links which destroyed the connection between articles. Terribly thing, you don't find the information you were looking for. And third: Your changes to foreign names - in Germany there is a wide difference between Ring deutscher Pfadfinderverbände (correct, abreviated RdP) and "Ring Deutscher Pfadfinderverbände" (wrong) - the second would give RDP as abreviation and lead to a confusion with the Ring Deutscher Pfadfinderinnenverbände.
One more tip: German Scouts use "Herzlich Gut Pfad" or simply "Gut Pfad" (~ (Sincerely) Good Way/Path) instead of "Yours in scouting" in letters. It's also a common greeting between Scouts. YiS --18:03, 4 November 2005 (UTC)

Nice and simple design, but I don't understand its sense - actually it links to the countries and not to the respective Scouting articles. Shouldn't it be the other way? --jergen 22:15, 14 November 2005 (UTC)

Jergen, my friend, I am so glad you wrote, I was going to write you on my next break from work, looks like you got here first. I wanted to ask you the _exact_ same question-that was my very first attempt at designing a template, how do I get it to link to each Scouting article and _not_ to the country? Also, I want to redo the map of the region to be more in line with Wikipedia maps (you know, the grey maps that contributors color to show what countries are involved in something), but I do not have Photoshop. Would you work on this with me? Danke and Gut Pfad, Chris (Kintetsu Buffalo)

I fixed the formatting of the template. Actually, I feel it's a little bit to wide - but I haven't found out how to change this. I put the template in all mentioned articles, but I'm not shure if Plast is the right link for Ukraine - AFAIK WOSM tries to set up a new Scouting body.
Concerning the map, unfortunatly I don't have Photoshop either.
I just added another template for the navigation between the WOSM regions: template:WOSM Regions. --jergen 09:17, 15 November 2005 (UTC)

Hi Jergen, I agree about the wideness, I think it is due to the map. Even if we go to a grey map it would still be wide. What is AFAIK? Right now there is not a regular article on general Ukrainian Scouting, and until there is an article, leaving Plast out would be ignoring the elephant in the elevator. Do you have new info on what WOSM is doing in Ukraine? Very cool links you've done! Kintetsubuffalo 23:08, 15 November 2005 (UTC)

AFAIK - as far as I know --jergen 17:05, 16 November 2005 (UTC)

Scouting in the Ukraine

In 2004, SPOK (Spilka Pionerskykh Orhanizatzii Kyieva - Ukrainian Scout Youth Public Organization) applied for WOSM membership. Since more than 5 % of the NSO (National Scouting Organizations) voted against the application, SPOK wasn't admitted to WOSM and a special mission of the World Scout Comitee was send to the Ukraine. (Amongst the opposing votes were Germany and the BSA). Actually WOSM is trying to set up a new Scouting body out of PLAST and SPOK. You will find more information in some documents issued by WOSM:

Informations on the history of the recognition of Ukrainian Scouting can be found here: http://www.ukrweekly.com/Archive/2001/200129.shtml

SPOK's homepage: http://scouts.org.ua/

In my opinion, the main problem with PLAST's membership is the fact that PLAST is an international body with member organizations all around the world. See http://www.plastscouting.org/ --jergen 17:05, 16 November 2005 (UTC)

Jergen, you're great, thank you, buddy! Are the changes I made acceptable? Also, can you find any such WOSM pdf documents related to Kyrgyzstan? I used to live there and am insanely curious to know newer information. Gud Pfad Kintetsubuffalo 21:08, 16 November 2005 (UTC)

Scouting In Turkic Central Asia

This article is marked for Wikification, which I was going to do, but I can not tell what the parent organization for Scouting is in Uzbekistan. What is the actual name? Rlevse 15:33, 29 November 2005 (UTC)

There is not yet a "parent organization", which is why we left the name the way we did. Also, please do not make IATP a category in the articles, it is a US State department function, not a Scouting organization. Think of it like a grant-org. Kintetsubuffalo

I'm sorry Chris, my Turkmen level is 2. I'm there to make some activity. I'm mostly active in Turkish wikipedia.tr:User:Ugur Basak.--Ugur Basak 08:08, 2 December 2005 (UTC)

Thank you, I do appreciate your answer. Perhaps you _could_ help with this-I need to know what "Be Prepared" (Daima Hazir) would be in Turkmen, might you know? Thank you, Chris Chris 16:17, 2 December 2005 (UTC)

(Just info:, Turken, Azeri and Turkish are very similar most of the words roots are same). "daima häzir" may be more correct of it. Daima means always hazir means ready, prepare. And it means something like "Daima Hazir". Can i ask why do you so interested in Turkmen.--Ugur Basak 23:24, 2 December 2005 (UTC)

Yes, I lived two years in Kyrgyzstan, so the area is one I would like to see the rest of the world know about, it is beautiful, with great food, nice people and much potential. But when people think of the former Soviet Republics, they often do not take the -stans seriously. I want to make Central Asia more well known, as best I can. Thanks, Chris 00:43, 3 December 2005 (UTC)

Sources for Svenska Scoutrådet, Asociación de Scouts Dominicanos, whichever next 'ditto' comes along...

Hello, good work on Svenska Scoutrådet, and thanks for the contribution. However, you forgot to add any references to the article. Keeping Wikipedia accurate and verifiable is very important, and there is currently a push to encourage editors to cite the sources they used when adding content. What websites, books, or other places did you learn the information that you added to Svenska Scoutrådet? Would it be possible for you to mention them in the article? Thank you very much. - SimonP 04:56, 4 December 2005 (UTC)

Actually, it came from a very simple one-liner at the chart http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_World_Organization_of_the_Scout_Movement_members, I just turned the data into the seed of an article. So it was already here on Wiki for me to extrapolate. Chris 05:17, 4 December 2005 (UTC)

VANDAL REPORT

Chris: A page I've been working this am was vandalized just now, 12:46pm or so on 16 Dec, east coast time. The article is The National Scout Organization of Thailand and they put a large photo of a male penis on it. The edit does not show up in the edit page, nor does the use show on the history page. HOW DO I FIX THIS AND REPORT IT??? Rlevse 17:52, 16 December 2005 (UTC)

PS THEY JUST DID IT TO MY Merit badge types (BSA) page too. Rlevse 17:54, 16 December 2005 (UTC)

UPDATE the porn image disappeared just now, but I want to trace it and report it if possible. I find it interesting it happened to two of the Scouting pages I work on at the same time. Rlevse 17:56, 16 December 2005 (UTC)

66.240.8.178 inserted the offending picture in one of the templates used in both articles (and also a lot more) - so his vandalism doesn't show in the history. He's banned for the next two weeks. --jergen 21:22, 16 December 2005 (UTC)

Hi Kintetsubuffalo - thanks for the clarification (and my apologies for messing it up if I did!). Might be worth checking against the pics at Tupelo and Sweetgum to see if either pic matches the relevant trees - MPF 21:26, 28 December 2005 (UTC)

Merit badge FAC

I have re-submitted the article Merit badge types (BSA) as a FAC. Any input you may have would be appreciated.Rlevse 13:28, 29 December 2005 (UTC)

Africa Scout Network Fellowship

Shouldn't information about this network be a separate page, not part of the Africa Region page, since it's a UK initiative rather than an initiative of the Africa Region?

(Just like if there was a Malawian club for Scouts visting Egypt, I would expect to see information about it on the Malawian page, with at most a link to it from the Egypt page...) Zaian 16:26, 30 December 2005 (UTC)

It's a great question, but I would say "no" for two reasons-#1, there is so much to be said about the UK Scout Association that it would be merely a sidenote on that article, whereas it is specifically related to the whole of African Scouting, where someone would go looking for it; #2, there are four other initiatives of the UKSA that are on the individual country Scouting pages, as _affecting_ local Scouting from an outside source-Poland, Russia, Uganda and Serbia-Montenegro. Chris 18:39, 30 December 2005 (UTC)

African Scout Associations

Nice work on adding pages for so many African Scout Associations, especially since many of these organisations are quite small and don't have websites of their own. Are these pages categorised together anywhere at the moment, or do you have plans for this in future? (I'm afraid I haven't worked out categories and templates yet, so I'll definitely bow to your experience on this!) Zaian 00:08, 17 January 2006 (UTC)

Hi, and I'm glad you understood why I moved the other discussion to the article itself. Jergen and I developed templates for each of the world Regions, they are in his workshop on his userpage. His idea is that the template should be put on once 50% of the nations in a Region have their own articles, which I was trying to do today but got sidetracked. The addition of the template will categorize them together and make them easier to access. Yours in Scouting, Chris 00:14, 17 January 2006 (UTC)

MB IDENT

Ebay item 7735203216 is a Colonial Philadelphia merit badge. It was only available from 1975-76 to Scouts in the Philly area and could only be counted towards palms, not any rank. It came in a green border and a "yellow" border (a very yellow-green). I own a gb, and have a bid on ebay on a yb right now. FYI, my ebay ID is also rlevse. YIS, Randy Rlevse 22:51, 2 January 2006 (UTC) PS: It's the only time National approved a regional MB for any such use. For example, some years ago, a council in Washington state had an anti-drug MB, but it couldn't be used for rank or palms. Rlevse 23:07, 2 January 2006 (UTC)

Search idiosyncracies

I've been trying to find this out and thought you may know. I've started 4 articles from scratch: the first in early Nov, second and third in late Nov, and the fourth in early Dec. Only the first one shows up in the search engine--it started doing so in early Dec. Why don't the other 3 show up yet? Rlevse 23:14, 2 January 2006 (UTC)

Randy, what were the article names? I have never seen that happen, they may have been speedily deleted, but it would have shown up on your watchlist if so. ps-also, do you have Photoshop? There is a method for my asking. YiS, Chris 05:29, 3 January 2006 (UTC)

Chris: Go to my user page, they are listed there. They still exist--were not deleted. I do not have photoshop--What are you trying to accomplish? Rlevse 11:01, 3 January 2006 (UTC)

Randy-what I mean to accomplish, well, look here User:Kintetsubuffalo/workshop Chris 19:15, 3 January 2006 (UTC)

Chris: Here're the ones listed on my user page, I created all but the Thailand one (which I did lots of writing on as you know):

None of the others show up in searches and were created late Nov or early Dec. If it takes this long for Wiki to pick up articles in searches, they need to work on that--Rlevse 14:20, 4 January 2006 (UTC)

Hi Chris: Any ideas on why they don't show up? Rlevse 11:02, 5 January 2006 (UTC)

Hi Randy-I am hornswoggled-the Mirecki and IATP articles pop for me, but the Pocceschi and John Wayne ones do not, and I'm sorry, I have no idea why. :( Chris 19:29, 5 January 2006 (UTC)

"workshop" pages

hi Kintetsubuffalo -- you created a few "workshop" pages, and an index of them at User:Kintetsubuffalo/workshop. However, the three specific articles are in the main wikipedia namespace, not the user namespace. I assume you intended Kintetsubuffalo/workshop/WAGGGSworldmap to be User:Kintetsubuffalo/workshop/WAGGGSworldmap, and so on. Would you move those pages, and then mark them with the {{db-author}} tag so they can be deleted? Thanks. bikeable (talk) 06:19, 3 January 2006 (UTC)

Scout Template

Thank you for thinking of me for the Scout template. That's very considerate and a very well done template. Yes, I'll move it to my user page. Rlevse 11:03, 5 January 2006 (UTC)

Have you thought of making the two templates (I put both on my user page) add one to Scout category? (the Eagle Scout template does this). Also, you may want to link the phrase "Scouting memorabilia" in the collecting template to Scouting memorabilia collecting. Rlevse 12:40, 7 January 2006 (UTC)

Thank you, Randy, I made they hyperlink, but cannot figure how to make them link someone to a Scouting category. If you want to mess around in my workshop, feel free. Oh, and I am working on those world maps. Chris 18:34, 7 January 2006 (UTC)

Chris: I only added one line of code to make this happen and create the category Category:Scouting memorabilia collectors. Then I noticed the category only adds users who add the template or resave their user page, not ones like you who already had it on their page. So, I had to open your user page, hit the space bar, and resave it. You and I show up in it now. You should notify anyone else using it to do likewise. I only know of you and I. PS: we could put it under "Wikipedians by organization" like the Eagle Scout template, but I think it fits better under "Scouting". Rlevse 21:44, 7 January 2006 (UTC)

Scouting Project

Chris I just saw you on the Scouting project talk page Gadget started and I went..."But I had him on that list, why'd he do that?" DUH, somehow during the editing I must have accidentally cut your name out as I distinctly recall having it in there. I'm sorry and am glad you found it. Rlevse 22:59, 13 January 2006 (UTC)

former scout

The "former scout" template I created was just a personal thing, I truly have nothing against scouts. I only added it to the userbox page thinking there might be someone else who could use it, like the many other boxes in the list. Once again, I have nothing against scouts and if you want to change the picture or remove it from that page, it doesn't bother me. Alex43223 05:46, 16 January 2006 (UTC)

BSA-Centrism etc.

I'm going to have to get back to you on this, I must have tagged "a billion" articles today. Its going to take some looking to compile a list of what I was talking about. But I think you may be taking my comment too seriously, I think there are a lot more scouting articles out there than you and I know about, and probably a lot that you have not seen or worked on. I'm sorry if my comment was unsettling lol. /hug. I'll try find some examples if possible, but it might be a few days. --Naha|(talk) 04:47, 21 January 2006 (UTC)

Scout Categories

I left this on Silence's talk page and am sure you can follow the reasoning, so I'll be working the real people categories in a moment..."

Our project has been formed and the talk page is at: [Wikipedia_talk:WikiProject_Scouting]]. We decided to name it just Scouting, not Scouting and Guiding, so I will make a category "Scouting members" and move the real people into it. The reason for just "Scouting" is that we felt it created more of a sense of oneness, as opposed to "Scouting and Guiding", which implies two that were joined." Rlevse 22:34, 22 January 2006 (UTC)

Chris: Please see: Wikipedia:WikiProject_Scouting/RulesStandards#Hierarchy_of_Categories and let me know your thoughts on how to recategorize articles where it's needed. BSA was a subcat of Scouting, but it should be under WOSM organizations, so I moved it. I have redone the members' cats and am now working on the encyclopedia cats. I am specifically looking at the articles on Hong Kong, Canada, UK, Poland, and Singapore as their categories seem out of whack with all other countries. Rlevse 00:00, 23 January 2006 (UTC)

Hi Randy, I'm not sure I understand all of that, but do what you think best. I think the reason Hong Kong, Canada, UK, Poland, and Singapore are thus is because they are homegrown, started long before Jergen or I got to them. Chris 01:45, 23 January 2006 (UTC)

I think I'll make them articles under Scouting, and then move the cats for them to WOSM/WAGGGS. They're definitely out of sync with the other stuff.Rlevse 01:48, 23 January 2006 (UTC)
(Chris smiling and nodding as though comprehending, slight drool-string)-sorry, today was a workday and I was in meetings and had to fight off a troll on that workshop page. And apparently they play football in Denver, so I have been told. Chris 01:52, 23 January 2006 (UTC)

State Scouting

All I did was link the pre-existing Tidewater Council article into the Scouting in Virginia article (Tidwater also covers part of NC--what to do in those cases?). I didn't rewrite the state article as I've spent most of today creating the Scouting Portal. Do you want to delete/redirect council articles into the state articles? Rlevse 18:49, 28 January 2006 (UTC) PS: is merging council articles into state articles what we're doing? Big states would get big articles with that. Perhaps state articles should have council articles as sub pages. Just suggestions. I guess I am confuses here-;) Rlevse 18:55, 28 January 2006 (UTC)

All is well, Randy, carry on, I just want to make sure we're reading from the same page. There are enough who _don't_ participate in the ScWP who still have their own ideas as to what to do with articles we've already agreed upon, it's just good to make sure all our participants are speaking the same language and that I am in line with the thinking of our progenitor (that's you). :) I am finally unsick and am going to spend the day out with a buddy. Chris 18:59, 28 January 2006 (UTC)
ps-the portal looks _fantastic_!
pps-there are several of my Eurasian articles that have been marked for cleanup. I myself am too close to the subject to see what they're wanting, but I want to make them better articles. Can you and Naha help me on that?
  • your new note*-I have wondered what to do on that same topic, as several councils have well-loved, nice big articles. Perhaps in those instances we can put a stub on the state page, and put see main article at... like the Scouting page does? Chris 18:59, 28 January 2006 (UTC)
    • Sounds good, for well-developed council articles, let's put a stub in the state article and refer to the main one. Rlevse 19:08, 28 January 2006 (UTC)

See Bandalag Íslenskra Skáta about a Bronze Wolf. Rlevse 12:08, 29 January 2006 (UTC)

Randy, good catch, but it was me that put it on there. Here's how I am working it.
If someone already has an article, I put the notation and category link on there.
If someone already is mentioned in an existing article, I make them a full article as noteworthy.
If someone is not already mentioned elsewhere, and there is a last name disambiguation page, I put notation of them on the disambiguation page.
If the national Scouting page is a stub, I put mention of their award directly on the page to bulk up the stub, as the award alone does not make them noteworthy for an article.
I have only done the BW thus far. As I go down the list for the World Committee, I find several that are both BW and WC, and _that_ makes them noteworthy for an article. At that point, I go back to where I have mentioned them, the disambig page or the national page, and create a stub article for them. But as I say this was put off since doing the state articles. List of Lodges by State

Chris, thanks to Rlevse for the invite to contribute to this project. (Is this the right forum to do this? Editing a page to correspond... just so weird-- maybe I missed your email somewhere). Really have my hands full with my own site; however, adding 47 lists to that existing page ignited a firestorm, so I'm willing to help clean up that mess ;). I am seeing the category page you set up at [[Category:Boy_Scouts_of_America]]. Can I make a similar one (not even sure how, will have to look at the code for the page). Tell me where it would be appropriate? You can email me at robhmac@yahoo.com YIS Robhmac 17:51, 29 January 2006 (UTC)

Hey, Rob, yes this is the right forum to respond, I'm glad to hear from you, I've been eager to hook up before you lose your information in that delete vote. You really should not try to make a similar template, as agreed in the WikiProject Scouting, Council and Lodge information needs to go on the Scouting in x-state pages, not separate as by themselves they are non-notable as per Wikipedia standards. Australian States Template

I have used your UK template to help me do one for Australia, pointing to links for articles such as Scouting in New South Wales. It is at User talk:Bduke/Workshop/Template:TSAUSbystate. For now I have just dropped a copy of the template into the Scouts Australia article? How do I go about putting it a proper place in the WP, not User, space? --Bduke 06:58, 30 January 2006 (UTC)

Very cool! what you do is change the name, and when it brings up the new name, trim off all before 'template', and that puts it into the 'pedia. Also, it's officially 'Western Australia', isn't it? YiS. Chris 16:47, 30 January 2006 (UTC)
Yep, it is "Western Australia" - thanks. --Bduke 20:27, 30 January 2006 (UTC)

Venturing Merge Explaination

You put up notices that you wanted to merge Powder Horn (Boy Scouts of America) into Venturing (Boy Scouts of America). The rationale for this has been questioned, and your input would be appreciated. Thank you. -- Thesquire (talk - contribs) 04:13, 31 January 2006 (UTC)

Bronze Wolf Syria

I am leaving the above on here, and am clipping the first paragraph of Wikipedia:Civility-"Civility is a rule for the conduct of edits, comments, and talk page discussions on all Wikipedias. Whereas incivility is roughly defined as personally targeted behavior that causes an atmosphere of greater conflict and stress, our rule of civility states plainly that people must act with civility toward one another." Chris 02:16, 3 February 2006 (UTC)

Chris, I am really sorry to just get your message that you are leaving the Scouting Project. I know WP can be frustrating, but I wish you would reconsider perhaps after having a week or so away from WP. You have and are doing a great job for the Scouting Project. Yesterday I was out at University preparing material for the Workshop I mentioned and then off to a social event in the evening, so with the time difference, I have only just found all the arguments that went on yesterday. It is early morning here. If you want to talk off-WP, my e-mail is on my User page. Best wishes, --Bduke 22:03, 3 February 2006 (UTC)

Brian, I really appreciate it. I'm just tired of the vandals and the narrowmindedness and the rudeness this thing engenders. I had asked the project for some moral support in the issue where the guy above started attributing motives to my edits. I wasn't asking for them to back the stance I was taking on the issue, I wasn't chasing barnstars or soliciting votes for featured articles, plain-and-simple I was asking someone to come to my defense in the name of civility. They're not that caliber of people, I found to my sadness. What instead instead was written was a milquetoast reply on the Scouting talk page making it look like I had instigated the escalation. It didn't help the situation, and it put me in a bad light. I have enough things to worry about without having to worry about watching my back with others I've supported. Thanks, though, brother. Chris 23:28, 3 February 2006 (UTC)

Hi there. I'm sorry to see that you've run into some issues here on Wikipedia. It, unfortunately, happens from time to time, and I really don't know what to say about it. You're an excellent contributor to Scouting-related articles.

I had a question regarding the image at Image:--ScoutsChris3.jpg. I posted a message with more detail at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Scouting#Image Issues. I wouldn't know if you're using the correct tag or not. However, the fact that the image is labeled as fair use makes it so that we can't use it in templates, user pages, portals, and the like. It's basically a messy legal issue.

Do you have any more information about the image so that we could possibly label it as free? Thanks. — Rebelguys2 talk 17:50, 9 February 2006 (UTC)

Okay, here's the information, if there are other questions I will answer them so you can get this used as you need.
1) This is a backpatch from my personal collection. It is from the Boy Scouts of Canada (now renamed Scouts Canada), and has not been their logo since at least 1967 (39 years by my count, which was why I used it thus).
2) I scanned and modified this myself in December 2004.
3) The reason it was used above others was that it is nondescript as to nationality, there is no national device or ornamentation except for the English-language "Be Prepared" scroll at the bottom.
4) My belief is that if you were to further modify this by removing the rocker, then it would be a logo that was never used in any form by any previous organization, and thus might count as free under Wikipedia guidelines.
5) Another way, and maybe the preferable one, to modify it so that it would be 'free', would be to include the Girl Guides trefoil behind the fleur-de-lis. This would assure WP that this is a new creation, and it would have the benefit of being coed. For instance, you could use the trefoil outline from Image:-p-ISGFbadge.gif in the modification.
6) The third way to get 'free', as I can see, would be to modify the colors, like turn the stars red or something. However, do bear in mind that green-and-gold are the traditional Scouting colors picked by B-P.
I'm still around, feel free to ask stuff, I just won't be a member of the Scouting project any more.
Thanks, Chris 18:37, 9 February 2006 (UTC)
The image you provided actually looks really nice. I wouldn't have been able to churn out anything better in Photoshop, myself. Thanks! I've left a message at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Scouting to get some further input. — Rebelguys2 talk 07:07, 10 February 2006 (UTC)

Condolences

Chris: My deepest condolences about your wife. It's so sad, especially since I take it she died at age 28. While my wife is fine, my dad died when I was 12, so I can empathize deeply. Kindest regards and YIS, Randy Rlevse 19:02, 16 February 2006 (UTC)

Thank you, Randy, right now I am trying to find a way to Japan on no money, being stonewalled by authorities there and wanting very badly to join her. Chris 19:15, 16 February 2006 (UTC)

What Randy said. I just lost my grandmother in September due to Alzheimers, and am expecting my grandfather to pass from the same disease soon. Obviously nothing a complete stranger can say to make things better, but my sympathies for your loss. Thanks, Mike, you're a true gentleman and I appreciate your thoughts. Chris 00:11, 24 February 2006 (UTC)
I feel I should also apologize for the blithe remark about trees on the kami page. I will look into your question. MikeDockery 00:17, 24 February 2006 (UTC)
Not at all, Sheri liked your little joke, she is fond of making jokes at odd moments. (I speak of her as here, as, well, hence my question on theophany...) Chris 00:23, 24 February 2006 (UTC)
By the way, I noticed you're trying to come to Japan. Like I said, I live near Tokyo, so if I can help you with anything let me know. One thing you should look into is many airlines offer discounted tickets for people who have to travel due to the loss of a loved one. You should also contact the nearest Japanese consulate where you live, as well as the (American?) embassy when you get here. They will be able to help you. The bureaucracy in Japan is astounding in its inefficiency, and I'm sure they'll come off as coldhearted as well, but don't take it personally. That's just the culture here. You indicated above that you were having trouble getting the money for a flight to Japan. I found a fare of $524 roundtrip here. That's about as low as they ever seem to get. And you should be able to go to Japan on a tourist visa for up to 90 days without any difficulties. Hope everything works out. --日本穣 00:27, 25 February 2006 (UTC)

I appreciate that, right now it's not so much the money as that her family in Japan is grieving and is not yet ready to see me. But I so appreciate your help on my behalf, blessings to you. Chris 20:26, 25 February 2006 (UTC)

Chris: I'm not sure what you are concerned with on Gadget850's change: the fact he says it's a copyvio (and you do not feel so?) or the fact it was removed??? Does it need to be translated into English??? If it's a copyvio, will mere proper footnoting suffice to keep it in? Please fill me in more. Randy, Rlevse 16:26, 28 February 2006 (UTC)

I agree that much of it shouldn't be in Spanish, this is the English wiki afterall and if it's a big copy and paste, it should at least be footnoted. I'll look at this again tomorrow. Running out of time tonight. Thanks for mentioning it. Rlevse 01:57, 1 March 2006 (UTC)

Working in Japan.

Hey, you asked about working in Japan. By far the best way to work in Japan is through the JET Programme, which places native English teachers in Japanese schools. It's quite competitive, but well worth it. It's a great experience if you're chosen. You can do a web search to find out more information. Good luck! MikeDockery 10:00, 4 March 2006 (UTC)

Shinto

Ah, shinto does not have well developed doctrine (of afterlife) though it's fairly ritualistic. That is why it is bit futile to try to approach shinto from theology. The best way to tackle shinto is to study it's ritual and try to accertain the meaning. It is often the case that such ritual or interpretation does not have textual basis. I do not know any book in English which deal with this aspect. FWBOarticle

Japan article template

I didn't make it clear enough when I created it that it should only be used for project-specific pages related to WikiProject Japan. It shouldn't be used in the main namespace. I put a clarification on the project page, so hope that helps. (^_^) --日本穣 Nihonjoe 23:34, 6 April 2006 (UTC)

An article is project-specific if it's got "Wikipedia:WikiProject Japan" in front of it, or if it's a related "Wikipedia:" page such as WP:MOS-JA). It should not be used on any template pages, though. --日本穣 Nihonjoe 23:42, 6 April 2006 (UTC)

I reverted your edit at Singapore

Well, Scouting is one of the most prominent youth groups in Singapore, but as it is not a "subarticle" of Singapore, and education is, I reverted your addition. However, the contextual introduction of certain scouting activities will be welcome at Education in Singapore. This is just because of Wikipedia:Summary, so don't take offense. Cheers! Scouting in New Zealand

The main New Zealand article only links to the highest level articles about New Zealand. Scouting could be linked to from Culture of New Zealand or maybe Sport in New Zealand, and it's already part of the category Category:New Zealand society.-gadfium 03:43, 8 April 2006 (UTC)

I've nominated the article Scouting in Vatican City for deletion, under the Articles for deletion process. We appreciate your contributions, but I personally don't believe it satisfies Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion, and I've explained why in the nomination (also see What Wikipedia is not and Deletion policy). Your opinions on why the topic of the article meets inclusion criteria and what should be done with the article are welcome: participate in the discussion by editing Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Scouting in Vatican City. Add four tildes like this ˜˜˜˜ to sign your comments. You can also edit the article Scouting in Vatican City during the discussion, but do not remove the "Articles for Deletion" template (the box at the top of the article), this will not end the deletion debate.

If there is any evidence that Scouting does exist in Vatican City please let me know (either on my talk page or at the AfD discussion). My suspicion is that this page was just a placeholder. savidan(talk) (e@) 06:25, 13 April 2006 (UTC)

Chris, Thanks for letting me know. Rlevse 18:47, 13 April 2006 (UTC)
Sorry if I erred, but seriously, are you telling me there are boy scouts in Vatican City. There arent really any permanent residents under the age of 18 there. savidan(talk) (e@) 20:28, 13 April 2006 (UTC)
All I am saying is that the World Organization of the Scout Movement is pretty specific about which countries don't have Scouting. I can't say about the Vatican, I would agree with you. But I have evidence of Scouting in the other countries you propose to delete, in the form of their national badges, which I plan to scan up when I get the computer working. I know those all have the same info, I planted them as seeds to encourage others to add to. Chris 23:40, 13 April 2006 (UTC)
Would you also be willing to accept Xorox's proposal instead. It seems like even if we get evidence of Scouting existing in these countries we won't have any information to differentiate them for years if ever. savidan(talk) (e@) 04:26, 14 April 2006 (UTC)
If they were merged, the current templates could be maintained because the articles would be redirected to "Scouting in countries with no national organizaton". I appreciate your intent of having people from those countries write the articles; however, in order for those articles (if they are ever written) not to violate the original research policy the sources would have to be published. Thus, if it is impossible for a non-member of scouting to write those articles, it begs the question. I did google and full lexis searches for all of these and was unable to find any information. I would of course support creating a subarticle once there is information to write, but I think it is silly to hold placemaker articles. In truth, it is unlikley that there will ever be much notable and verifiable information on scouting sans national organizations, and what little information there is (from scouting.org) and is likely to be published in the next decade will most likely be generic literature rather than specific to the individual countries. savidan(talk) (e@) 18:55, 15 April 2006 (UTC)

Possible copyright infringments

Hello Chris, over the last days you added content to a lot of Scouting articles, that was first published on http://n2zgu.50megs.com/ and its subpages. I'm not really happy about this for some reasons:

  • the possible copyright infringments on a large number WikiProject Scouting's articles,
  • the web page is outdated (last changes in 2001),
  • and the content is not very reliable. (I think you have seen my changes to the Luxembourgish articles.)

Could you please try to obtain a permisson to use these texts under the GFDL? Otherwise I fear we must remove the texts from the articles (and put in some new reformulated and doublechecked content).

Please read also Wikipedia:Copyrights and Wikipedia:Copyright problems for backgrounds.

YiS --jergen 08:33, 22 April 2006 (UTC)

PS: I want content on the associations history in the articles, but we have to follow Wikipedia's official policies. I'm very thankful for your contributions to international Scouting - otherwise I'd feel a little lonely in that part of our project. --jergen 08:33, 22 April 2006 (UTC)

Jergen, I sure will speak to the fellow, he is a long-time friend of mine, I will try to obtain GDFL from him. Two things, I provided him much of his original information that he worked from back in 1994, and many things on his site are direct copies from the 1990 English language version of Scouting 'Round the World, so in my mind I was getting a return on the information I had given him. I certainly meant no copyright infringement or plagiarism, and I will speak to him as soon as possible. Thanks, your brother in Scouting, Chris 17:54, 22 April 2006 (UTC)

Hi Jergen, each of those images (France, Norway and ZSKSS) are on that http://www.dpsg-heisingen.de/html/mitglieder_wosm_1.php website. Even outdated, and image is better than a blank file. Also, is it okay what I did with the Girl Guiding info yesterday? Chris 19:42, 21 May 2006 (UTC)
I know, they are... but I got tired. Saturday we had a Scouting presentation on a state fair including a large tent we had to take down during a tempest. In the evening a meeting of our regional Scouting history committee. Yesterday was the annual meeting of our Scout foundation (bilances including some 100.000 Euros etc.). Hope you understand.
But I don't find ZSKSS on the list - there is only ZTS listed. --jergen 08:05, 22 May 2006 (UTC)

All requests are done, next are the missing WAGGGS-emblems (as far as they are avalaible). BTW, I like the additional information on Guiding; but I think we should start articles of their own as soon as possible - I've lots of informations on them. --jergen 11:38, 22 May 2006 (UTC)

holdergals.net link

May I ask how you figure that the link to holdergals.net on the Cigarette holder article is a good link? It appears to be a fairly newly launched site with hardly any content at all... --AbsolutDan (talk) 03:00, 20 May 2006 (UTC)

Hi fellow Wikiholic Dan! The reason I put it back is, aside from the fact that it was poorly added the first time, it is an attempt at community for those interested. If there is a better link to a related forum, please change it to that. :) I'm just trying to encourage connection for those of similar interest, and the link itself was not as bad as how it was put on there. Chris 16:44, 20 May 2006 (UTC)
Ok, fair enough, I suppose there's no harm leaving it there until something more extensive comes around. Cheers --AbsolutDan (talk) 17:15, 20 May 2006 (UTC)

Question and Opinion

Take a look at the “Scouting in Connecticut” page and let me know what you think.

  • Maybe I should merge the current council into the one subject heading of “Past and Present Councils”
  • Do we need to identify each town in a district?
  • I also found 42 – 43 Boy Scout Camps, past and present, any suggestion how to add them?

Let me know what you think and who else can I ask to look at the article.--dep369 22:08, 24 May 2006 (UTC)Dep369

Thanks for your comments

  • 1 Like the rest of the Internet, Wikipedia abhors large strings of capital letters. Perhaps the way to get around this is to italicize what you now have in caps, or perhaps change the font color.Sounds like a good idea. I'll work on different colors.
  • 2 Wikipedia also dislikes "List of..." anything. You can take that out anywhere it appears in the article, and it will sound much better. We changed all these from "List of councils in x state" to "Scouting in x state" specifically so that Wikipedia would not delete them, as it had done to the lists of OA lodges. That was a pity, as the fellow had put a lot of work into it, but lists are bad, m'kay? Will change them.
  • 2a Wikipedia dislikes the use of postal abbreviations. If you don't want to spell out "Connecticut" for sheer volume, consider leaving out the state name in each instance, like Hartford instead of Hartford, Connecticut. I didn't even notice that I did not spell out Connecticut in the first section, where I did in all the other sections (and 169 times in the Girl Scout Section. I will fix this.
  • 3 I don't understand the addition of Honor societies where it is, can you explain? Someone added this when I had the Arcoon Lodge information as a separate article, so I just imported it over. The Info on Chi Sigma, which started out as a honor society could have influenced the person who tagged it..

But my original question was:

  • Maybe I should merge the current council into the one subject heading of “Past and Present Councils”
  • Do we need to identify each town in a district?
  • I also found 42 – 43 Boy Scout Camps, past and present, any suggestion how to add them?

any suggestions?

I can work on other Girl Scout Council list, at least current councils. But the same question bothers me, should we name every town? Let me know.--dep369 01:24, 25 May 2006 (UTC)Dep369

Eagle Scout Peer Review

I listed the Eagle Scout article for a formal peer review a few moments ago in the hope in about 2 weeks to list it as a FAC. Based on my experience with other FACs and one of my own successful FAs, I think there are two things people may object to: a) is the lead long enough? and b) are there too many lists? Please think these issues over. Thanks for all the help, Randy. YIS, Rlevse 11:46, 26 May 2006 (UTC)

WikiProject Japan W. Edwards Deming

Hi Chris,

Last week you placed the WikiProject Japan notice on W. Edwards Deming talk. I signed up for WikiProject Japan but am not sure how to go about finding an editor to help with the article. I am very knowledgeable about the subject matter but not about Wikipedia (newbie). I could use help with mark up, format, NPOV, and OR issues. I think the article is not that far from the good article criteria and would welcome assistance from an editor with more experience. Thank you. Leaders100 21:31, 7 June 2006 (UTC)

Thanks for the information, I will get in touch with Nihonjoe.

Do you really think that the Camp Wolfeboro article is better off as a note inserted into the Scouting in California article, rather than standing by itself? (I suppose the same question applies to a lot of the other substantial entries on various camps run by the different CA councils.) The Scouting in California article is already quite lengthy, and could probably benefit from a bit of trimming-up. Anyhow, I am curious why you have made this move. Scouting in Connecticut

Hello Rlevse,

Thank you for the input. I've corrected them. I have a question for you on the format. Most Scouting in articles contain very little regarding past councils, camps and lodges. The suggested format that you list the council and include the camp and lodge makes sense until you hit Connecticut where I think I found every council, every camp and every lodge. Does it make sense to list the three as I did or combine the three together. If combined, Camp Sequassen could be listed under 4 councils and where would the history go? To the last council? I've asked other folks, on an informal basis for their suggestions but received nothing back. I have more info to add, hopefully over the next several weeks. Any suggestion would be helpful.--dep369 23:30, 13 July 2006 (UTC)Dep369

I'm referring this to Chris, who deals with this area more than I. Rlevse 00:18, 14 July 2006 (UTC)

Chris, this has been discussed before. The former is about the UK only. The latter is an international article about this section. When proposing a merge, could you use "mergeto" and "mergefrom" tags rather than just "merge" tags as this indicates clearly which is to become the redirect and which the main article. It also directs the debate to one talk page, not to both which is confusing. I'm opposed to a merge, but if you change the tags and give some clear reasons on the appropriate talk page I'll reconsider. Cheers, Brian. --Bduke 08:04, 16 July 2006 (UTC)

What did you merge this into? I want to look before I afd it. Rlevse 00:53, 26 July 2006 (UTC)
Scouting in Ontario (chris)
I too thought of putting this to AfD but I have chnaged my mind. It needs to be a redirect to Scouting in Ontario as people will look for 129th Toronto Scouting Group and Queer Scouts which redirects there. Of course, AfD might lead to a redirect, but I do not thing we can rely on it. We need to ask again on the talk page for the merge to be confirmed and it becoming a redirect. --Bduke 01:05, 26 July 2006 (UTC)
I JUST put a db on it, but after I saw this, I redirected it. GEEZ we're all on at the same time!Rlevse 01:08, 26 July 2006 (UTC)
agreed, redirect is better, thanks.--Chris 01:09, 26 July 2006 (UTC)
And I have fixed the links that were to "129th Toronto Scouting Group" to go direct to Scouting in Ontario. Let's hope it all sticks. --Bduke 01:50, 26 July 2006 (UTC)

PS: on the assessments, if you look you'll see some were moved from mid to high and the TOPs were increased from 9 to 42 yesterday, so it's not all one way. Rlevse 01:11, 26 July 2006 (UTC)

  • Chris, when you merge an article, the project rating on the talk page of what is now a redirect needs changed to non-article status. If you don't know how to do this, let me know when you merge and I'll do it. Rlevse 18:59, 26 July 2006 (UTC)

Hi there. I currently have a bot run underway tagging all living persons talk pages with the project template (Special:Contributions/Kingbotk) so you don't need to tag any manually. However, if you want to tag any manually please ensure that, if the person is still alive, you add the "living=yes" parameter, e.g. {{WPBiography|living=yes}}. My bot run isn't clever enough to modify existing templates, so if it finds a WPBiography template on a talk page it will skip it. No reply needed. Cheers. --kingboyk 23:34, 5 August 2006 (UTC)

Kun Musta'idan x20

What's the point in duplicating exactly the same paragraph in 20 articles? Also, whoever cares what's the Arabic translation for "Be Prepared", will of course look in that article, and not in Sahraoui Scout Association.

And what's the point in providing the Arabic translation of the word "boyscout"? This is not a dictionary. --tyomitch 15:25, 23 August 2006 (UTC)

A more constructive solution would be to move the paragraph to WOSM-Arab Region. The paragraph is equally relevant to all the members of the Region, and its article is already linked from all the members' articles. Is that good enough? --tyomitch 17:10, 23 August 2006 (UTC)

I have to disagree about putting it in the region article. Each association should have its own info. But I also agree a little variety would be good. I suggest leaving the info in the association articles and varying the text in each some.Rlevse 23:55, 23 August 2006 (UTC)
Tyomitch, I truly appreciate your energy, but that suggestion is actually not "good enough". First, it goes against the format of the 160+ other national articles;
ORLY? Asociación de Guías y Scouts de Chile (picked totally at random) doesn't give the Spanish translation of the motto. Organizatsia Na Bulgarskite Skauty (picked randomly again) doesn't either.
second, the Scout Motto is not specific nor particularly pertainant to the Arab Scout Region;
The Scout Motto isn't, but the Arabic translation is.
and third, the removals do not give the reader which languages or variants are used in that particular country.
A reader can navigate to Western Sahara and read in the infobox at the very top that the official language there is Arabic.
Please leave them as they are. Besides, there has been some discussion about dividing up or renaming Be Prepared, as it is too much a catchall to be of use to most. We very much appreciate your contributions, but unless you'd like to join the Wikipedia:WikiProject Scouting, we'd prefer to let those with some connection to the topic be the arbiters of what is noteworthy in each article.
IMO it isn't a question of noteworthiness, but that of general style. I am not personally connected to the Scouting, and being an independent reader, it just struck my eye to see 20 repetitions of the same paragraph in every article.
Now, if you _do_ want to add the Arabic to the Scout articles for Palestine and Syria, we would really appreciate your contribution (and thanks for the ones you did already, that's a lot of work). In thanks, Chris 01:51, 25 August 2006 (UTC)
Yeah, and the Iraqi one. I will do that as soon as I have some free time again. --tyomitch 06:51, 25 August 2006 (UTC)

and to find how Emperor Hirohito, Viscount Makoto Saito and General Maresuke Nogi are related to Scouting through the Japanese Wikipedia.

I do so appreciate your help, Chris 02:25, 1 September 2006 (UTC)

Here you go:
Akizuki Satsuo (秋月左都夫)
After observing a British Boy Scout event in 1908, he reported his findings to others in Japan, paving the way for the Boy Scouts to be set up there. (Note: Name order is Surname-Given name because he was born before Meiji 1 (1868).)
Takehiko Kurushima (久留島武彦, Kurushima Takehiko)
Participated in the 2nd World Scout Jamboree in Denmark. Author of youth literature and winner of of the "Nihon no Andersen" award for his nursery rhyme "Yūyake Koyake". One of the founding pioneers of the scouting movement in Japan.
Hiroshi Koshiba (小柴博, Koshiba Hiroshi)
Author of Tokyo Shonengun. Participated in a discussion in 1913 with Japan's ambassador to Russia Ichirō Motono, were Motono explained all about the Boy Scout principles and organization in Europe. Koshiba was suitably impressed and decided to follow them. Participated in the 1st World Scout Jamboree in 1920 in England. Helped reorganize the Shūyodan Yonenbu into the Nihon Kenjidan with Shimoda (below) in 1921. He died of a sudden heart attack on June 19, 1925.
Tsuneha Sano (佐野常羽, Sano Tsuneha)
Attended the 2nd World Scout Jamboree in Denmark and the 3rd World Scout Jamboree in the United Kingdom. Received the Silver Wolf award from Lord Baden-Powell in 1931. The only other person to receive the Silver Wolf in Japan was the Emperor Showa. Given the title of "Elder" by the National Scouting Association of Japan in 1954. Given the highest award of the NSAJ, the "Kijishō", in 1955. He died in 1956.
Toyomatsu Shimoda (下田豊松, Shimoda Toyomatsu)
Author of Hokkaido Iwanai Shonendan. Participated in the 1st World Scout Jamboree in 1920 in England. Established the Nihon Kenjidan (translates to something like "Japan Stalwart Youth Troop") in 1921. Was Japan's first "Chief Scout."
Hōjō Tokiyuki (北条時敬)
Principal of Hiroshima Regular High School. After returning from attending a worldwide morality conference in 1908 where he conducted a survey of the British scouting organization, he returned to Japan and gave lectures on it in Hiroshima and other places. (Note: Name order is Surname-Given name because he was born before Meiji 1 (1868).)
Michiharu Mishima (三島通陽, Mishima Michiharu)
Held a scouting exhibition in February 1946, the first since the end of WWII. The National Boy Scout Alliance of Japan is founded in 1947, and Mishima is the first president.
Hope that helps. ···日本穣? · Talk to Nihonjoe 05:51, 1 September 2006 (UTC)

request for help against deletionist

Brother, Randy says you can help me on this-this guy really wants to delete my recent additions for illustration-Image:LaszlonagyU.jpg‎, Image:Laszlonagycarlgusta.jpg‎; and Image:BoyScoutsofNippon.jpg, please help me save them from him. I hate having to do this all the time. Chris 23:49, 5 September 2006 (UTC)

hey, i'm sorry it's taken me a while to get back to you. going thru the history of these image descriptions, I can't see that User:Carnildo has done anything wrong in disputing the fair use rationale you gave for these images.
Image:LaszlonagyU.jpg - it looks like it might be sorted out, but weakly. Promotional items include a very limited set of images, but since you claim it's from a press kit, OK - I won't argue. {{promotionalphoto}} is a an utter nightmare - it's tag that is misused 99% of the time, so he was right to be wary without evidence to the contrary. Remember that images need to be sourced, which is something you didn't do, and they need a rationale, which still hasn't been done very well.
Image:Laszlonagycarlgusta.jpg‎ - i'm not sure what you're referring to here.
Image:BoyScoutsofNippon.jpg - i'm guessing that this is from the same press kit you were talking about earlier? OK, but I can't the fair use justification. this image isn't illustrating any historically significant events, individuals, etc., so there's no reason not to find a use a free image. i'd support this image's deletion from Wikipedia, though I'd rather not bother you about it at the moment. a majority of the time, i find that the {{Non-free fair use in}} is frequently misused and often just forces a very, very weak rationale onto an image, because no real rationale works.
Continually referencing the Copyright Act of 1976 isn't going to get you anywhere, either. Carnildo knows all of the ins and outs of image use on Wikipedia, and he certainly understands how fair use works. But you're working within Wikipedia, and I, along with many others, like it when we make efforts to keep things free, even if it takes a bit more work. i suppose it pisses a lot of people off, especially because there is a fundamental misunderstanding of copyright among most people, but hey. — Rebelguys2 talk 17:50, 9 September 2006 (UTC)
If Image:LaszlonagyU.jpg is indeed a photo from a press kit like you said, then {{promotional}} is the correct tag. Since the source is cited (WOSM), it's OK for our purposes - though obviously not ideal. Unfortunately, I see no reasonable fair use rationale for Image:BoyScoutsofNippon.jpg, which actually hasn't been included on the image's page. You're going to need to read through the {{Non-free fair use in}} tag and follow its instructions, but I still don't think it's enough. — Rebelguys2 talk 23:25, 9 September 2006 (UTC)

Request for Checkuser

If you want your request for Checkuser to be accept you should have some way of showing how if the two accounts are being used by the same person that there is a violation of WP:SOCK. Use of a sockpuppet is not in of itself a violation of Wikipedia policy and if you cannot show that there is some possible violatin of WP:SOCK or a related policy (such as WP:3RR) the request will almost certainly be declined. JoshuaZ 04:19, 18 September 2006 (UTC)

Sorry if I sound belligerent in this WP:RFCU but normally I expect to find at least a 20% or 30% likelihood of sock behavior - here I see 0%. I can't even figure out what motivated you to start this in the first place. I feel like I'm missing something! Did you leave out an account that connects this all together? At the moment there's more evidence that I am a sock of Elvrik. —Wknight94 (talk) 14:53, 19 September 2006 (UTC)
Re: "One thing to consider, if you wanted to generate an appearance of consensus, would you not set up topic-specific sockpuppets over a period of time for just such a purpose?"... Anyone could be doing that. You could - I could - anyone. By your argument, you and I could be socks of each other - we don't edit the same articles but could be setting up to make some huge consensus attack in the future. It just doesn't make sense. That argument is literally the opposite of what checkusers are for. —Wknight94 (talk) 00:21, 20 September 2006 (UTC)

This is to let you know that I expanded the page for the project listed above a little. I honestly know virtually nothing about the country, and was only as I indicated following the template of the page of another project. Feel free to expand it as you wish. Also, it would really help if you were to add your name to the list of project participants. Any project with no members is technically eligible for deletion. Have you ever heard the ZHP threw acid at Nazi's in WWII? grazon 02:08, 2 October 2006 (UTC)

Hi Chris, I say, that picture you 'created' and gave to the public domain? You can't do it like that, man! Wim van Dorst (Talk) 20:22, 2 October 2006 (UTC).

I kind of figured I shouldn't, though I trimmed off the edges for the 'pedia. What should I do? Thanks, and I meant no ill intent. Chris 20:40, 2 October 2006 (UTC)
  • Interesting changes, Chris. VERY recognizable text, but nearly all correct. I wondered about the copyright attribution: isn't the picture made by/for the Russian Union of Scouts organization, on the celebration of the beaver award for Kroonenberg? I'd suggest a small update there. And the rationale reference in the article itself is still to be done. BTW, did you really contact the WOSM? Would be a good idea. Send an email to Victor Ortega (vortega@world.scout.org (the PR guy) and ask him! Wim van Dorst (Talk) 22:09, 3 October 2006 (UTC).

If you think you are being harrassed for your dodgy copyright attributions (beyond what is legitimate) just drop a line at one of the admins. There's one on the WP:Scout participants list (Randy pointed it out recently on some talk page). Wim van Dorst (Talk) 23:19, 16 October 2006 (UTC).

You'll have to explain "Image Commies". My thoughts are that the Hepburn image is not only referenced in the article, but is the foremost image brought to mind when the old formal style of smoking is mentioned.

Image:Elkhorn.jpg

Thanks for uploading Image:Elkhorn.jpg. I notice the 'image' page specifies that the image is being used under fair use, but its use in Wikipedia articles fails our first fair use criterion in that it illustrates a subject for which a free image could reasonably be found or created. If you believe this image is not replaceable, please:

  1. Go to the image description page and edit it to add {{Replaceable fair use disputed}}
  2. On the image discussion page, write the reason why this image is not replaceable at all.

If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified how these images fully satisfy our fair use criteria. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on this link. Note that any fair use images which are replaceable by free-licensed alternatives will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Important P.S. If the photographer is willing to license the image under the GFDL, then we can keep the image. Please let me know if this is the case.

Scott Market

Thanks for your reply. I thought I had been told it was not named after James George Scott but some other Scott; and J. G. Scott was never an administrator in Rangoon or Lower Burma, so I can't see why it should have been named after him (though indeed he was a schoolmaster there in his youth, and it is true that he introduced football there!) However, if I was told this about the market, it was a long time ago, and I now need to check it. Wish me luck ... Andrew Dalby 22:26, 30 October 2006 (UTC)

Orphaned fair use image (Image:Franceneuterao.jpg)

Thanks for uploading Image:Franceneuterao.jpg. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that images for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable under fair use (see our fair use policy).

Template:IntlScoutsGuides

Re [2] edit summary: :) I regularly leave things in a visually questionable state when removing fair use image violations. Trying to find visually acceptable replacements or creating visually acceptable variations on templates is generally time consuming and I am a poor substitute for someone who has an interest in the particular template in question, such as you in this case. Perhaps you could have found acceptable free-license substitutes...I don't know. For me to make that decision, a person who has little or no knowledge of the subject of the template, is not the best of ideas. Fair use rationale for Image:Laszlonagycarlgusta.jpg

Warning sign This file may be deleted.

Thanks for uploading Image:Laszlonagycarlgusta.jpg. I notice the 'image' page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in Wikipedia articles constitutes fair use. When you use a generic fair use tag such as {{fair use}} or {{fair use in|article name}}, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use.

Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale.

If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on those pages too. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any fair use images lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Apology for your treatment at the Girl Scout Office

I'm sorry on behalf of my sister Girl Scouts and Girl Guides for your reception at your local Girl Scout Office when you enquired about materials about Girl Guiding and Girl Scouting around the world. I don't want to make assumptions about what country you were in at the time, so I can't tell you exactly what they should have said. The most well-known publication on this subject is Trefoil Around the World. It's in English and is published by WAGGGS both as a book and a CD-ROM. I know it is available in several countries, if not all where English spoken. Some of this information is reproduced on the web, when you know where to look, for example at the GSUSA website. A lot of handbooks and leader's resources have information on international matters too, although these are inevitably not comprehensive. I'm sad that you weren't helped more effectively. Very interesting. A curious coincidence of name, at the very least. I never learned what became of Mitton after Scott's death.

Image upload

Hi Chris, did you read my comment on Talk:List of highest awards in Scouting#Images?

Myanma diplomatic missions

G'day Chris:

Glad you are an Australophile. It will make my job easier, coz I hate reprobating people during the Chrissie period.

You recently proposed merging the Myanma diplomatic missions article into Foreign relations of Myanmar. Nothing wrong with proposing that idea, except you just went ahead and did it before getting your mandate, or even understanding the nature of these articles.

Please be advised there are two kinds of foreign policy by country articles. We have for almost every country a Foreign Relations of X article (eg Foreign relations of Uganda), which describes that country's foreign policies and issues. And we have a less prose-y X Diplomatic Missions (eg Ugandan diplomatic missions) which just lists where a country's embassies and consulates are located.

If you think merging them together is a good idea, please get a consensus first, although I don't think people will want to reformat over 250 articles to make it consistent with your suggestion.

In the meantime kindly revert back the former Myanma diplomatic missions article.

Thank you,

Kransky 05:49, 30 December 2006 (UTC)

Chris:

I removed the redirect from Myanma diplomatic missions and cut-'n'-pasted the contents from I wrote that you copied into Foreign relations of Myanmar back into ::Myanma diplomatic missions. So Foreign relations of Myanmar remains unchanged, except that I added a link to Myanma diplomatic missions in the "See also" section. Vegemite? I hate the stuff. I heard that it was being banned in the United states over some FDA issue. Have a great new year. Kransky 04:29, 31 December 2006 (UTC)

Chris:

The adjectival word for Myanmar is Myanma. See Explanation of the names of Burma/Myanmar#Adjective_Oddities Kransky 04:42, 31 December 2006 (UTC)

Chris:

Wikipedia style dictates that places are named according to how those who govern the place call it. For example we have the article Republic of Macedonia because the Macedonians identify themselves with this nationality, even though the international community calls it the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia to comply with Greek sensitivities (the Wikipedia article for Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia and FYROM send you to Republic of Macedonia). This is no reflection on the moral authority of the junta; it is only done to establish consistency. If the Myanma leaders want to rename their country Buttercupland so be it. Can we leave it as Myanma diplomatic missions please, like Myanma kyat (See Wikipedia:Naming_conflict)
