Japanese name

Hi Chris! I'd like to help to find the name. But 風まかせ is too long for a modern female's given name. And I cannot think of any similar sound name. It rings me nothing at all. The only name I could think of is 風祭/kazamatsuri, but it's a surname. Do you have any information about it? Regards. Oda Mari (talk) 20:23, 2 January 2008 (UTC)

Please proofread this

Hey, Chris, you have an eye for detail, so please proofread this for me. As compared to Image:London Midland Network ZP.svg I just know there's something that should be found Sagredo⊙☿♀♁♂♃♄ 22:52, 8 January 2008 (UTC)

I should have realized that you're an MS Internet Explorer user. To view them larger, you could use the Firefox browser (much more secure, BTW) or install Inkscape just to use as a viewer.

Actually I think they're pretty much the same, except one has "Sagredoville!" Amazing Recent Activity of the GLab !?

Hello, I posted the question there, do you know the answer ? I'm interested to get it. (Please answer on the linked page) Yug 10:02, 9 January 2008 (UTC)

This is going to get interesting. As you likely know the original graphics lab was the French, but the English is now bigger and growing fast. User: Inductive Load - I hadn't seen him around before, he's certainly good and has a strong background in science somewhere. Also there ought to be a merger with the english speaking lab at commons. Or at least get them on the same page for developments. I keep getting the impression that the French think they should be at the center of it all, and maybe they should, for a while. But that won't last long, as it makes too much sense for the meeting ground (developmental pages) to be either multi-lingual or in English. It doesn't really matter where they're located, although the Commons seems logical. I don't know if this merger of the development areas will go smoothly, or if there will be a big fight. So it's not a time to be an outlaw.
I had some French in high school, but and remember some, but back then it was at about the "See Spot Run," kind of level. When Escondites said his request languished at the French Lab for a month. I used a common French phrase in my response. That's when Yug left a messages on my talk page and the graphics lab page. I really don't have the technical background to do much in the development area either. I also wonder how many at the German Lab might speak English. sagredo2@gmail.com Sagredo⊙☿♀♁♂♃♄ 18:44, 13 January 2008 (UTC)
Missed that I wasn't signed in above. It would be interesting to see what happened at g-lab if some requested a specific artist. If it were for me, and someone squawked, I'd just take things on my graphics page. (Another artist is already doing it. Her very own, very impressive graphics lab.) Either way it's be too flattering to me to resist! I'd prefer just to stay at the graphics page, unless Yug becomes a pain about me working on the development project. I'm much happier just minding the store. (and seeing us kick french butt!)Sagredo⊙☿♀♁♂♃♄ 18:44, 13 January 2008 (UTC)

Coat of arms of Nepal, many others

There is just enough there that it should redraw beautifully. But I want to wait until I see how Fvasconcellos does on Harare, Portal:Harare. I have a sneaking suspicion that he's going to do awesome. How many others? Sagredo⊙☿♀♁♂♃♄ 04:29, 12 January 2008 (UTC)

Read the line:
Article(s): Coat of arms of Nepal, many others
And took it as the title of the section.. It's late. I'm tired. Need my tinfoil hat. Sagredo⊙☿♀♁♂♃♄ 04:38, 12 January 2008 (UTC) You're right that I was confused. I was thinking you had many other coats of arms to put in. You break something? Sagredo⊙☿♀♁♂♃♄ 04:49, 12 January 2008 (UTC)

Ever go here? User:Sagredo/graphics I would want if downloaded, and reuploaded so I don't get hassles about copyright vio's. I would also take requests on my graphics page. With the present situation between the French and English labs, I would move them there to E. lab so they get it for the image count. Doesn't it say somewhere break all rules. . . archiving

You've done everything correctly, all you need to do now is to add the January Entry to the GL Archive Box. (However I am now going to create a page, giving links to all the 2007 archives, and condense the 2007 entries in the GLarchive box into '2007'. I shall put the January entry in so you can see exactly what you need to do for next time. :-)

Family blazons

What kind of arms, and what kind of pages? Do you have an example? -- I. Pankonin (t/c) 09:26, 14 January 2008 (UTC)

I was afraid of that. Coats of arms are owned by individuals, not an entire family. This is true everywhere except Poland, where one coat of arms can be used by an entire clan, which may encompass many different family names. So it's never true that everybody with the same last name shares a coat of arms. This is written in Wikipedia at Bucket shop#Heraldic scam, and I can help you out if you want a better source about this phenomenon. -- I. Pankonin (t/c) 10:45, 14 January 2008 (UTC)

Tagging images for the Africa Project

Hi Kintetsubuffalo, I noticed you have tagged a few images with the {{africaProject}} tag. I was wondering if there is any real use in having the project tag on images. I put a message on the project talkpage a little while ago, but got no answers. Do you think you could give your opinion there? Thanks, --BelovedFreak 22:38, 17 January 2008 (UTC)

Scouting images

Hi Chris,

You're welcome, I'm glad you found the '37 Jambo pic useful. I have a large photo collection including many on Scouting going back to the 1920s -- just let me know if there are any other subjects you'd like and maybe I could help.

I just got home from a BSA Council Banquet where one Scout received the Hornaday Silver Medal. It is said that only a half-dozen were earned nationwide in 2007. Cheers, Jim JGHowes talk - 05:05, 18 January 2008 (UTC)

I have a 5" x 3" group picture of all 12 Region Scout Execs. from 1937, so James P. Fitch should be in it. However, it's just labelled "Regional Executives" and no one is specifically identified by name. I do have a publicity shot of Walter W. Head, so I'll go ahead and add it to his article. Reversions

I am aware of no reversions. If there are any, my apologies. The template for the Africa project banner now includes separate assessments for each nation, and indicates which national projects support the article in the drop-down menu. The previous banner, while it did display assessments, never had them result in anything. The current banner will produce automatic updates of the assessments like any other. For what it's worth, most of the nations of Africa will now be using that banner for there own separate projects. There was no intention of reverting, simply adding assessments to the system the most reasonable way. Also, in the event that the articles will deal with more than one African nation, which is often likely, use of the current banner will reduce the banner overcrowding, as it will be able to assess for all nations. If you can point out any reasons to objective to such moves, I would welcome them. John Carter (talk) 01:23, 21 January 2008 (UTC)

The banner has just recently been created. The problem you raised is a real one, but to the best of my knowledge no one has figured out a way to display "subprojects" if the number involved is small enough. Also, some of these articles would seem to cross national barriers. One of the disadvantages it has over the one you mentioned is the fact that it deals with some 40 separate subprojects. Setting up the banner to display them all would be problematic, particularly when dealing with ethnic groups or other features which cross several countries' borders. However, the main project page does list all the subprojects. Also, I think most editors familiar with say the military history banner will know to hit the display button on the lower right, which does display all the related subprojects. They will know this particularly when they see it on all the relevant articles. Like I said, the banner has just been created, and I really can't know how likely it will be that the concern you raise will be a significant one. Certainly, the banner placement could be reverted if it comes to that. I have looked at using the setup of the Australia banner, which does automatically display such menus, but the length would probably be prohibitive for a banner dealing with this many entities. I have contacted a few of the better template men we have to figure out how to display single-three project supports, but right now, I haven't gotten any response. If and when such response is forthcoming, the banner will be changed to accomodate limited numbers of projects. But I do think that given the prominence of the new projects on the main project page, it should be fairly clear that one can/should join the project they find most appropriate. The assessment details should appear on the main Eritrea project page within the next day or so. John Carter (talk) 01:40, 21 January 2008 (UTC)

Vietnamese Americans etc in {{WPVN}}

Hi there. Badagnani has added quite a few poker players and other people of Vietnamese descent with the Viet wikiproject and I was wondering what you thought about these being in the scope of the project. My personal opinion is that poker players, Vietnamese American politicians and businessmen shouldn't be in WP:VIET because they don't operate inside Vietnam/none of their notability is related to Vietnam (unless they were notable when they were still in VN). I think Vietnamese language singers, eg Nhu Quynh might be in the scope of the project since they are propagating Vietnamese culture. Blnguyen (bananabucket) 03:56, 21 January 2008 (UTC)

Your announcement

Hi Chris, the link to the newspaper articles is not working. I'd like to see it. Also re New Zealand regions, I think there has been a chnage recently. It is on my to do list. If there are only a few they will still be larger than some UK Counties. Cheers, --Bduke (talk) 08:09, 23 January 2008 (UTC)

Thanks for the link on my talk page. The link to the paper now works but it did not an hour or so ago. I did a small edit on your sub-page. As for NZ, yes, it is far smaller than the UK, but it will have far fewer Scout Counties/Regions/Areas (or whatever). The UK counties (Areas in Wales and Scotland) are smaller than the State Branches in Australia. There are too many to keep up quality on the UK County articles. The NZ situation is quite confused but I have a contact there now. I just need to find time. When are you of to Japan? --Bduke (talk) 09:31, 23 January 2008 (UTC)
May 8. My wife's birthday. That will remind me. Good luck with the move. --Bduke (talk) 09:53, 23 January 2008 (UTC)

Re: Michaelrhoover - sock?

Hi there. I wanted to let you know that I removed the sockpuppet tag onMichaelrhoover's user page, as I didn't see that there was any information that he was anything other than a newbie who jumped into the Steve Duplantis Afd after it was listed on the golf project page. If you have any information that he really is a sock of another user, by all means please put it back. If you do, you should subst the template, I left an example in my comment at the Afd.

On a completely different topic, I'm very sorry about your wife, she was very beautiful and I'm sure a beautiful person as well. I've discovered after a three week trip to Sasebo last year that I'm a Japanophile too, and I've been trying to learn the language and take another trip there ASAP. I wish you all the best there. Hi. I'm in the process of creating specific, project-related categories to update this template, but we need to get a hold of a bot like Wikinews Importer Bot maintain it. Do you know anyone who would be willing to do this? The proposed bot would scan the task-related categories of Category:Hawaii articles needing attention (ideally there would be no articles in this category, just sub-cats) and update the to-do template. The articles would appear in the categories after being flagged in the project tag. For example, you just manually added Thrum's Hawaiian Annual to the template for expansion, but this would be easier to maintain by flagging the project tag as "expand=yes". —Viriditas | Talk 09:48, 31 January 2008 (UTC)

I just realized that the CategoryTree extension will suffice, so I'll experiment with that instead. —Viriditas | Talk 09:54, 31 January 2008 (UTC)

Navboxes

Ok- I would like to finish this up and no one is giving any input. I would like a consistent look here.

  • I did most of these like {{AfricaScout}}, with a group column on the left and the list of links left justified. Centering the links here just did not look right to me.
  • On {{Scouts UK Counties}}, the group names would have been way too long, so I just left them bolded and did a line break to the list.
  • Other templates like {{IntlScoutsGuides}} did not have a group name, so I left them centered.
  • In all the templates, I replaced | with a {{·}}; this automatically adds a non-breaking space so that line wraps are consistent and you don't get a dot at the beginning of a line; this appears to be the more standard way to do this.

Now that these templates have been converted, further changes are relatively trivial Some possibilities:

  • Dump the hat icon as used in a handful of templates like {{Scouts UK Counties}}; it is purely decorative and I really think that most readers will not understand what it is.
  • Redo all the templates like {{Scouts UK Counties}} without a group column and center everything.
  • Some of the original templates had the v·d·e links at the top left and some did not; I kept the original style; this should be made consistent across the line.

So, let me know what you think on this. --— Gadget850 (Ed) talk - 14:32, 31 January 2008 (UTC)

Yes, I think I could help with at least one extra language that isn't well represented among the current contributors, as well as various others. Hi Chris, I checked the pdf. It is possible to extract at least one of the pictures but it has a really bad quality (like all of them). Far better quality can be found on the slowakian website on Roma Scouts which has even an english translation: http://www.scouting.sk/romsky/en_index.htm. This site features some picture galleries as well as two powerpoint presentations. Template centering

I fixed {{Scouts in Exile}} for now. This issue applies to all of the navboxes— I have descibed the issue in full and have proposed a fix at Template talk:Navbox#Title centering. I would rather have a fix at the root level.

Found a slight spacing bug in navbox, but we still have to pad the title to fix the centering. Let me know if we want to go green and I will implement this fix on all the templates. --— Gadget850 (Ed) talk - 14:28, 9 February 2008 (UTC)

Kosovo

Unfortunately there is to little content for an article - I would not start one at the moment. We should also remember that right now Kosovo is not recognized by any country, but this may be subject to changes every moment. I will categorize the redirect Scouting in Kosovo. --jergen (talk) 07:39, 18 February 2008 (UTC)

Syriac Scouts

I do not know much about them, but can give some hints:

  • There is at least one troop of Aramean Scouts within the BSA.
  • The Syriac Archdiocese of Zahle and Bekaa in Lebanon links to two Syriac Scout organizations [7]: Syriac Universal Scouts/Universal Syriac Scouts and Syriac Lebanese Scout/Lebanese Syriac Scouts/Scouts syriaques libanais. Following this, Image:-universalsyriacscout.png is not the emblem of the Lebanese organization.
  • This page [8] mentions Syriac Scouts in both Lebanon and Syria in the 1920s.

Today, there seem to be Syriac Scouts in

  • Lebanon with their own association
  • Palestine (the Bethlehem group has about 200 members [9])
  • Syria (this [10] displays some pictures of Scouts with the badge of the universal organization (?); this German website [11] says that there are 1,500 Syriac Syouts within the Archdiocese of Mesopotama and Euphrat in northern Syria)
  • perhaps Germany (I came across them, but can not find them again)

This is no easy task, since there is a number of different Syriac churches. As far as I can see, all groups or organizations mentioned above are connected to the Syriac Orthodox Church. Connected to the Syriac Catholic Church is the 274ieme Saint-Ephrem in the Association des Scouts du Canada.

BTW: There are some Syriac Catholic Scouts in my district, but we are a Protestant association. --jergen (talk) 10:06, 20 February 2008 (UTC)

Did you ever hear of the Association nigerienne des scouts de l'environnement (ANSEN)? I came across them while combing the net for the Syriac Scouts. They seem to have a UN accreditation [12]. --jergen (talk) 10:10, 20 February 2008 (UTC)

WOSM

Sorry, Chris, I am going to disagree with you. If there is any doubt, it becomes a disambiguation page. The Scouting WOSM page is just one more click way. Request of Comment

Hi, I would suggest that a request for comment might be useful way of solving the issue as a start. There are other options too, including mediation, but an article request for comment will get uninvolved experienced editors involved. --Slp1 (talk) 22:41, 2 March 2008 (UTC)

Thank you, that's the most constructive thing I've heard all day. I appreciate it. I've been trying to cut through all the legalese crap on the other options, without success. Chris (クリス • フィッチ) (talk) 22:44, 2 March 2008 (UTC)

WikiProject Tajikistan

I saw you put up a banner for it on the 2008 energy crisis page (which makes sense), but I'm wondering, is this project still going? It has 2 members, and besides your scouting post, there's no discussion there. I'm a bit hesitant to say anything after the workgroup debacle last month, but you think it's still a viable project? Otebig (talk) 03:32, 6 March 2008 (UTC)

I've started a discussion here about merging. I think the intense reactions to the whole workgroup/project issue were partly due to quick actions that caught people off guard, so I'm trying to be very careful to not step on any toes with this idea. Thank you for your input and support! Otebig (talk) 06:32, 6 March 2008 (UTC)

Noble House

I'm not sure the plot is so closely based on history as Tai-Pan and Whirlwind; but if you look at this capsule history of Jardines in the 1960s, [13], going public and then the big supermarket deal are clearly paralleled in the book.

I believe some of the big set-pieces -- the fire on the boat, and the landslip, are also closely modelled on real happenings. As you imply, it wouldn't surprise me at all if Clavell had based a *lot* on real events and real gossip of the time. But that's about all I know about Hong Kong in the '60s!

Apologies

Thanks for your clarification on my talk page. I didn't mean to be rude earlier, and I was wrong to assume your edits were vandalism; however, it's difficult to distinguish this unless you cite sources, since verifiability is one of the core guidelines of Wikipedia and blanking of pages is generally frowned on. You restored back to genitive case where it's supposed to be nominative. Remeber, Russian has mch more word forms, so if in English names in phrases like 'of Eurasian Bureau' look nominative, in Russian they're changed, and have to be changed back before putting in the article. I had a go. The string could probably be edited out, but, frankly, I did not feel up to it tonight. The image is actally wedge-shaped, so can't be made square without distorting it. As most Victorian drawings are not, in fact, square.... Shoemaker's Holiday (talk) 22:37, 21 March 2008 (UTC)

Yes, I'm really interested to see what progress such a project might make! --ANONYMOUSPUSSY 09:41, 22 March 2008 (UTC)

Yes, I'm glad I noticed the project proposal on the off-chance. I read Brett and Fentress' book The Berbers a month or so ago and contemplated writing an article on Berber history (bits and pieces of my first attempt are here [15]), but I've had my fill of being caught in the crossfire between ethnic POV-warring factions so I lost my enthusiasm when I considered what attacks the page was likely to come under (there's a particularly nasty example of this kind of behaviour from User:Mariam83 on the talk pages of Berber people. Fortunately, she's been banned but it took a lot of effort before the block was imposed by the looks of things). But a good faith project might give us some protection against this. Glad you enjoyed the userboxes. Cheers. --Folantin (talk) 11:24, 22 March 2008 (UTC)

"Underhanded style"

Hi,

You accused me here of being "underhanded" in my nomination of the template in question. As it was visibly broken on about half the pages it was used on, and adds almost no functionality that isn't already present in the image tag, I edited it out of articles as a matter of fixing them. Nominating the template once it was unused was just housekeeping. I'm pretty stunned that this has been taken to be an act of bad faith. Thanks, currently I am on a singular project to create Sri Lankan Tamil people into a FA quality article. It takes all my available time. I have given my self three months to complete it. Then I will have time to spend time on projects like Berbers. Personally I dont like editing without academic sources. Right now apart from Sri Lankan Tamils related academic books, I have some on Aztecs not Berbers. It would be appropriate to begin a list of RS Academic sources starting from the latest to oldest as a resource for those who are interested in editing Berber realated articles., just my thoughts. BTW I found your reason for sticking to editing Wikipedia very poignant, we all need a compelling reason to stay the long term. Taprobanus (talk) 18:27, 23 March 2008 (UTC)

Maybe it is {{uw-3RR}}? Tiptoety talk 00:10, 30 March 2008 (UTC)
Great! Glad that we figured that out! Okay, first I would start a discussion on the articles talk page and hope to god that the user in question starts to discuss there as well. Leave the article the way it is, no not continue to edit war and for sure do not violate WP:3RR. If they continue to edit war or violate 3RR you can report them and they will be blocked. But remember it takes two to edit war. Tiptoety talk 00:21, 30 March 2008 (UTC)

It's not really better, per se, but it looks a bit more like a photograph now - I'm afraid there is no way that it could be gotten any better than this, given the extreme poor quality of the original, but I blurred it to remove [some of] the JPEG artefacts, which makes it look more like a [blurry] photo and less blocky, and I adjusted the contrast and converted to greyscale. I don't know what you had hoped for, but I'm afraid this is all you can get at this point, if you don't have the original.

By the way, the description of it says it's the "Burma Cub Scouting logo" in the Fair use rationale, which can't be right and doesn't anywhere say what we're actually looking at beyond the arses of a lot of men in uniform. Shoemaker's Holiday (talk) 04:25, 29 March 2008 (UTC)
