Hello LEvalyn,

My name is Jaeger and I have a question. Is there any possible way I can recommend an article to be review by someone more experienced? I was just editing an article (this article to be exact https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Persecution_of_Germans&action=view), and I felt like I was not qualified to make any major changes to the article. I recommenced the articled to be supervised, but that is all I know how to do so far. Perhaps you could look at it? That is all.

Hello Jaeger, and welcome to wikipedia! There isn't really a formal process for referring an article "up the chain", since Wikipedia is a non-hierarchical community. However, if you'd like to find editors to help with addressing an article's shortcomings, WikiProjects often gather editors around shared interests and might be a place to find expertise. It looks like this is an article of longstanding controversy, so I see why you don't want to go it alone. You might get some traction starting a discussion at Wikiproject Germany. I know that the Military History wikiproject is very active, though this may not fall under their purview. Wikiproject Discrimination may be relevant, but perhaps not active. You could also try directly tagging editors who have worked on the article in the past, to ask questions about what might improve the article in future.
As a tip for starting those discussions, if your post something like 'hey does somebody else want to deal with this?' you're likely to get a lot of silence. But, if you can identify some things you like to propose -- like removing all unsourced content, or organizing the information into different categories -- you might be able to build consensus toward taking those actions by making the suggestion in on the article's talk page and then asking people at those wikiprojects to weigh in. In general, removing all unsourced content can be a shocking disruption to an article, but often a very necessary and reinvigorating one. The more controversial a topic, the more relevant quality sourcing is.
Frankly, when I look at this article, I see a rat's nest that I don't really want to poke with a ten foot pole... if you were to make improvements they would be valuable but I understand your hesitation. Good luck!! ~ L 🌸 (talk) 19:02, 14 December 2022 (UTC)

SirMeChase, this is probably something you should ask a successful musician, and not a Wikipedian who writes articles about eighteenth-century poetry. Hello @Puffer belly: welcome to Wikipedia! You raise a very interesting question about this article, though one which is beyond my expertise. I do wonder if the relationship between North American railroad signaling and North American railroad signals, as articles, could be rethought. It sounds like you have some real expertise on this topic. If you want to reorganize the information in these articles, or introduce new sections and details (with citations), that is something you can be bold and change in whatever way you think is an improvement! Often, there are very obvious improvements that can be made, but haven't been simply because no one has taken an interest in doing it. Your contributions would be very welcome. If you think it would help to rename or merge the articles, for that kind of change you'd want to get some consensus from other editors. In both cases, I suggest bringing your ideas to the Talk page of the train Wikiproject, where I think you will find editors interested in the same topic. Articles like Bungay Castle (novel), Eighteenth-century Gothic novel, and The Woman of Colour: A Tale (!) are important to recount, and you've done it well. I've used Wikipedia for my whole life and now I want to start contributing and getting into editing Wikipedia articles!

I have a question regarding Wikipedia articles whom were written by the person the article/biography is about. If I suspect this is true how would one go about submitting an article for removal?

I know I should start off with the easier things and I am doing that now after writing this to you, but I am curious about this as well.

I noticed this article regarding a tech guy who created a few apps that never gained any traction. This article seems to have been written by himself back in 2017 and the original account who wrote the article has never logged in or touched it since besides minor edits from random IP addresses over the years.

Hello MSWDEV, and welcome to Wikipedia! My apologies for the somewhat slow reply. I'm glad you've decided to dip your toe into this side of the encyclopedia. I think it's fair to start wherever something captures your interest -- there's no single path to editing. In this case, since the potentially-COI account isn't actively causing problems at the page, I think we can focus on the content of the encyclopedia, rather than on any potential wrongdoing of the account. In other words,
1. Does it look like the article needs to be deleted? Take a look at the sources with WP:NBIO in mind. In this case, you'll want to be sure that you're finding coverage of him specifically. not just his companies, and that you're ruling out repackaged press releases (which are not independent). If the existing sources don't seem sufficient, do some additional research as a WP:BEFORE and then WP:AFDHOWTO may be the next step.
2. If he is notable, does it look like any of the prose needs to be revised for a WP:NPOV? You might need to remove WP:PUFF from the way things are phrased, or remove extraneous details. It seems excessive to list all the various customers for his businesses, for example; each business can probably be covered in 2-3 sentences. I also wouldn't list him as an eligible bachelor (!!); at most I'd mention he is single.
It's a fair bit of work/research -- essentially, cleanup -- which may not be the answer you were hoping for here, but it would be genuinely helpful for you to undertake this task! Adding images can be a little fiddly since they actually need to be uploaded at Wikimedia Commons first, and then you can link the Wikimedia Commons file on the Wikipedia article. This guide has a bit of a walkthrough for the whole process using the visual editor. Do be careful that you only upload images that are totally free of copyright! Those would usually be images old enough to be public domain, or images you personally created that you are donating to Wikipedia (giving up all copyright). Hello @Procrastinater, sorry for the slow reply here. Unfortunately, this is not a part of wikipedia that I know anything about! Typically the goal is for infoboxes to be pretty standard and simple, but I know sometimes the specific templates add more complexity... the right people to ask would probably be the ones at a relevant WikiProject, since that's where you could find the consensus to add some new flair to an infobox. I wonder if WP:MIL is a place to start...? You could also see if WP:TEA could point you more in the right direction. Sorry I couldn't be more helpful, but let me know if you ever have questions more to do with content and sourcing, which are better areas of expertise for me! Hello, LEvalyn. I am new to Wikipedia's editing software, and while I initially only started playing with it to kill some time, I've found myself having a lot of fun with it. Last night, I made a number of revisions to an article on director Emma Seligman, but all of my edits were reverted, I suspect due to the fact that I sourced an IMDb page to cite her birthday, unaware that this is not classified as a reliable source. I believe many of the edits were important and helped the page look more formal and read more smoothly, and would like to restore them, but I do not want to start going tit-for-tat with the very experienced editor who overrode them right after I've just joined. Hello Loneclaire, what a frustrating first experience with Wikipedia! I'm sorry this happened, and thank you for your efforts in contributing information and working to learn Wikipedia's "ways".
My understanding of what happened here: It looks like this editor was using the semi-automated tool Wikipedia:Twinkle to remove material, especially birth dates, sourced to IMDb. It's very common for people to think IMDb will be an acceptable source, but as you have now figured out, it's disallowed because it is WP:USERGENERATED (just like Wikipedia itself can't be used as a source) -- so some editors go through and just take out IMDb en masse. This editor likely did not even notice that your other additions cited more reliable sources, and, moving quickly, undid everything. My take on that is, they should have been more careful and only removed the specific things cited to IMDb. (Sometimes experienced editors get so used to seeing vandalism and low-quality edits that they don't notice when they're actually dealing with a good-faith newbie.)
More generally how to approach or respond to these kinds of things: First off, I think you've handled things well, erring on the side of caution. You examined the cited policies to learn more about how to edit, you avoided conflict, and you sought advice. Frankly, I think in future you can be a little more assertive. If you look at how wikipedia defines an "edit war" (WP:WAR), it's three reverts in a 24 hour period. If you avoid that level of tit-for-tat, and accompany your edits with edit summaries or talk page comments, a little back and forth is an ordinary way to find consensus. (See WP:BOLD). Specifically, in this case, after you felt you'd understood the complaint that caused the revert, you could have responded to the feedback that IMDb is an unacceptable source by making the exact edit I just made, restoring all your non-IMDb-sourced edits. If you aren't sure you understand why someone reverted you, you are welcome to ask me any time, or you might get a faster response at the Teahouse.
On a personal note, I loved the short film Shiva Baby so I'm glad you got in touch so I could learn that it was made into a feature film and learn more about Seligman! Hello Macedopr, thanks for sharing. I took a look at that article and did my own search for "Athena Macedo" and at this time, I don't think there is enough news coverage to support a wikipedia article. The source looks suitably reliable to me and it's promising that the article is just about her (it's not a trivial mention). However, the article doesn't say anything unusually newsworthy and when I searched I didn't find any other coverage. You may find it helpful to read WP:BIO and WP:TOOSOON. I would generally say, for a living person who is early in their career, there's a fairly high burden of proof to show that they are already notable. You'd probably want at least three articles similar in scope to the one you found, and more is better, ideally spread out over time. If you are able to find more coverage of her, I'd be happy to advise on when you've found "enough", but for now I'd suggest that you get wikipedia practice by picking someone that you're SURE has been written about a LOT, and learning the ropes with that figure. Hello Momzilla007, and welcome to Wikipedia! I'm glad you're giving editing a try and happy to help however I can.
I think rather than thinking of this as a "sources problem", in this case, you might think of it as an "encyclopedia scope" problem. In general, most things that happen are not so important that they end up in encyclopedias. Wikipedia is especially skeptical of articles about businesses, since a lot of businesses try to use Wikipedia for free advertising. (I totally understand your desire to share cool info about your local store and I don't believe that's what's happening here! But, it will affect how Wikipedia policies and expectations get applied.) In general, the expectation for a business is that they should be more like Neuhaus (chocolatier) which invented a whole kind of confection (chocolate pralines) rather than an ordinary business. You might find it useful to read WP:LOCAL as well. You've done a great job of highlighting the store's history (that bit about bylaws is really interesting!) but all of the coverage looks like it's from Prince George rather than being national or international coverage.
So at this stage, my advice is to set aside the Game Quest article. You might be able to add the Power Up Prince George event to the list of annual events at Prince George, British Columbia. But mostly you might think of it as a learning experience in how to operate the site and get a feel for its norms.
I hope you won't abandon Wikipedia, though! If you have geeky interests, you might be able to really improve Wikipedia's coverage of SF books, for example. The standards are a lot simpler for books: if you can find two separate, independent book reviews (described in WP:NBOOK), the book is "notable" (aka "allowed to have an article"). If you have access to old SF magazines that published reviews before the internet, you have a goldmine of valuable source material. And of course there are interesting new things being published every day which have modern reviews. I'm happy to offer more pointers or troubleshooting any time. Thank you for the feedback on the Game Quest article. I will set that off to the side as it is truly a local treasure and not very well known outside of northern BC.
I think that is an excellent idea to contribute to the coverage of SF books. I love to read science fiction, but also horror novels. I'm also an avid gamer, and I may contribute a bit more in the area of video games. I have done a few edits already to some video game articles. I bet I can count on those to keep me busy. Game developers are always patching or changing release dates.

This help page covers some of the mechanics of making edits on Wikipedia articles. In this case, I'd also suggest reading this guide on editing with a conflict of interest. Because ne'er-do-wells often try to use Wikipedia for sneaky self-promotion or propaganda, Wikipedians can be more exacting about "conflicts of interest" than folks in other contexts. You can see how I've handled a "COI" for a loose professional acquaintance via a userbox on my userpage and a note on the talk page of her article. I was a little WP:BOLD in making her article, largely because the "COI" was pretty slight and my own confidence in wiki norms was very high. In your case, you may want to use this process to request that others make your proposed edits. If you do the latter, feel free to post on my talk page any time to call my attention to a request and I might be faster to review than the usual process.
In general, the most important part of editing with a COI is to provide the secondary sources that can be cited to support any new material you want to add to the page. This can be a little frustrating when you are in a position to know more about the topic than the sources you can cite, but verifiability is an important part of Wikipedia's mission as a tertiary source, aka, one which summarizes other sources.

Hello MarcDavidDaly, thanks for your work to learn how to contribute to Wikipedia appropriately. I'm glad you reached out, since I think the current state of the article is likely to be rejected again. There are two issues, one small and one possibly quite large.
The small one: there are a number of external links within the body of the article, which will be off-putting to your AfC reviewer and thus probably ought to be cleaned up (see WP:EXTERNAL).
The large one: it's not clear in this draft that the distillery should have a Wikipedia article at all. This is the real thing that an AfC reviewer is trying to evaluate. Take a look here for how I explained a similar case to Momzilla007. See also Guylian for a successful business article. I see some potential within the sources attached to the article, but the overall feel of the article-- a whole uncited section of products!!-- does not make it easy to see the notability.
Your top priority, to get the article accepted, should be to foreground reliable, independent, secondary sources talking about why this distillery is so important it belongs in an encyclopedia. It is extremely possible that such sources do not exist in sufficient quantity and it is thus impossible to get an article on this distillery accepted. In this case I think it's plausible that some form of article could eventually be accepted, largely because the building is historic and there's good coverage of the Guinness investment. The simplest path is probably to write an article about the building, describing its history since the 1790s, and just putting in a section about Waterford Distillery at the end.
If you really want the article to be just about the distillery, I'd recommend deleting absolutely everything that you can't cite to a newspaper. Focus on being concise and summarizing. Hello! I corrected an incorrect statement on an article about the game Happy Wheels. However, it was reverted by a user because it's "not a reliable source" (https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Happy_Wheels&diff=next&oldid=1184158979). The source I linked is the official website for the game, and the same website was even used as the previous citation!

I contacted the user on their talk page a few minutes afterwards (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User_talk:Felida97#Question_about_edit_revert), but they haven't responded yet. Since then they are still actively making edits.

Two questions: 1. Why is the source I provided incorrect, when it is the official website and even the previous citation used for the incorrect statement used the same website? (The statement previously claimed that a sequel has been in development since 2019, however it was already mentioned to be in development back in 2012.) 2. Should I just wait for the user who reverted my edit to respond, or should I just redo the edit?

Hello Kwwwwwl, and welcome to Wikipedia! I'm happy to offer my thoughts.
First, you're totally right that the source you added is of the same quality as the source that was already there. What probably happened, if I had to guess, is that the previous low-quality source had been there for a while and nobody was checking it, and then when you made your edit, your edit showed up in a feed of "edits by new users" where someone scrutinized just the change you made and not the whole context. Since the source is low-quality, that person reverted the addition, without really reckoning with the fact that it wasn't a major change from what was there before.
I've called this source "low quality" because it is a WP:PRIMARY source. Wikipedia strongly prefers secondary sources. In this context, I think the primary source is better than not including the information. But I don't think this information belongs in the first paragraph, since that is where a Wikipedia article usually just summarizes the big-picture of all the info in the rest of the article (see WP:LEAD).
In this case, my advice is to add a new, short paragraph to the "Development" section which mentions both sequel announcements and uses the primary sources carefully. I also think the "Development" section would probably benefit from being broken up into thematic sections, maybe pre- and post-release? In general, it's best not to redo the exact same edit after someone reverts you, but after you've thought about why they reverted you, you can try making a different change that incorporates both your own goal and their feedback. See WP:BRD and WP:3RR for more guidance on how to respond to a difference of opinion in editing.

I agree that most academic awards would not meet this criteria and I think articles like the Mosse prize mostly exist because no one has tried to delete them yet. I doubt I would have accepted the Mosse prize article; I agree that its sources do not demonstrate WP:GNG coverage. Compare to the Newbery Medal, or even the Dan David Prize, which get plenty of national news coverage. (Also note that the AHA is a much larger organization than the Section on International and Comparative Administration of the American Society for Public Administration, which is not even the 'full' ASPA.)
Nonetheless, you are welcome to resubmit the draft and see if another reviewer has another opinion. I think it's unlikely to be accepted, so if you're declined again, my advice is to merge the content you wrote to the articles on Riggs and the ASPA. Hello 216.209.142.143, thanks for getting in touch. The sources you provided are an improvement, and the article is also improving. But 2-3 independent sources do not, in and of themselves, prove that a subject meets Wikipedia's notability guidelines; instead, they are a bare minimum. I also advised you to "focus on quality over quantity" because I hoped you might turn up something like a profile of Charlton in the Toronto Star. However, if these three sources represent the best quality available to you, I don't believe the article has any real chance of surviving at Articles for Deletion. All three appear to be municipal coverage, not national or international (or even provincial!), and they fall far below the level of coverage that is usually expected for a living author, musician, activist, or politician.
The role of AfC reviewers is to use our experience and judgment to decide whether an article would survive an immediate deletion discussion at AfD. We decline drafts that we think have a less than 50% chance of surviving, in order to spare everyone the work and unpleasantness of getting deleted through AfD. I think this draft would definitely not survive. However, the advantage of AfD is that all that work and unpleasantness can forge a more thorough consensus about the right course of action for an article. Since IP editors are not able to publish drafts themselves, if you would prefer to have a full AfD debate rather than relying on AfC reviewers' assessments of how an AfD debate is likely to go, I would be willing to accept this article and immediately nominate it for deletion. Hm I'd also like to offer some thoughts on how and which links to insert. For the "how" I think you're getting the hang of it -- use the "cite" button or <ref> tags so that the link will show up as a superscript rather than directly in the article. But for the "which links": essentially, if the link doesn't have any new information in it, it doesn't need to go in the article at all. When you're writing an article from scratch, it's easiest to write it starting with a few very good sources. When proving that something is notable enough for an article, it's key to show that the right kinds of sources exist. Reviews and newspaper coverage are usually considered the best. Hello Pooja The Cyclone, are you referring to Draft:Pooja The Cyclone? You haven't gotten feedback on that draft because it hasn't been submitted for review. When you think it's ready, you need to click "Submit the draft for review". Then someone will read it to determine if it ought to be published to Wikipedia.
Before you submit, I urge you to read these instructions and disclose any relevant conflict of interest. You should also remove the "other sources" section, which does not fit with Wikipedia norms for how to list sources. You could put the list on the article's Talk page to keep access to it, but really the best thing to do is to pick the most reliable of those linked sources and use them as citations for the information in the article.

Hello GoekC, and welcome to Wikipedia! I'm glad you're starting by adding citations. The easiest way to add a reference is to use the visual editor on a computer, and at the top of the editor there will be a button with a quotation mark and the word "cite". If you click it, choose "automatic," and paste in a URL, it will insert a citation to wherever you are currently typing on the article. On the mobile editor, the same button just has the quote-marks icon, without the word "cite". You might also find these instructions for the visual editor helpful. Hello Badroma77, welcome to Wikipedia! If you want to start a new draft, you can't create one with a "blank" name, it has to have a name from the very beginning. I suggest using the Article creation wizard to start your draft; after you follow the instructions there, it will create a draft article with the name you pick.
Before you do, I also suggest reading WP:BACKWARD: writing a whole article from scratch is kind of like taking the final exam for a class before you've done any of the homework. Most people find it a lot easier and more enjoyable to make an article after they've added to several existing articles to learn the ropes.
