Typos in quotes, or citation titles

Hi
I'm assuming you are using some kind of semiautomatic process to fix typos in articles. Can you try to avoid touching quotes, titles in citation templates and probably everything inside reference tags, or at least take extra care in those cases? E.g. you changed "Religon" to "Religion" although the spelling error was in the quoted source.
Thanks & Cheers, AmaltheaTalk 00:08, 14 October 2008 (UTC)

Your assumption that I'm using any kind of semiautomatic process is incorrect unless you count cut and paste in the summary line. Am trying to take care in those cases. I believe I reverted the instance you cite when I became aware of it... or at least a similar one. Sorry if not. Will try to be at the top of my game ;) --LilHelpa (talk) 00:25, 14 October 2008 (UTC)
Don't worry, I fixed that one. If you run into sourced spelling errors again you might want to consider tagging it with the {{sic}} template so that readers and future editors don't have to wonder. Thanks & Cheers, AmaltheaTalk 00:55, 14 October 2008 (UTC)
Good idea. I've done that, but not consistently, and not with that format. Thanks. LilHelpa (talk) 01:03, 14 October 2008 (UTC)

Creation of broken image links

Hello, from your edit history I can see that you're doing good work by e.g. correcting spelling mistakes. BUT when you "correct" the spelling of links to file names from an existing to a non-existing one, as you did with this edit to Müller-Thurgau some time ago, you create broken links. Even if you're using a bot, you're not supposed to run on automatic, as I'm sure you know! Regards, Tomas e (talk) 16:29, 18 November 2008 (UTC)

Ooops. I usually catch that. No bot being used, just a human and equally prone to mistakes. LilHelpa (talk) 16:34, 18 November 2008 (UTC)
OK, I just checked your recent edit history and saw a lot of spelling error corrections in a row so I assumed it was bot editing. Tomas e (talk) 20:42, 19 November 2008 (UTC)

Didn't mean to break your rhythm...

but I saw the correction pattern and started up with this change. I'll slink away as you are faster than I am. I also like to imagine new ways that words can be misspelled. And yes, I end up at Indian articles often, but I figure that helps me to expand my horizons. Best yet is 'metalling' - there are many kinds of English.

The template correction is an example of something I wish I could codify. I once 'fixed' a bunch of mis-categorizations, which were simply people typing in the word 'category' wrong! (e.g. catgory - euuwww) It's my only categorization work yet. :-) If one could find a set of commonly used template names, that might be something to pursue? Shenme (talk) 06:06, 24 November 2008 (UTC)

Well, the best found when searching was a result of looking for occurrences of 'abd'. I found "abd nabaged". The key to unraveling that is of course the keyboard-ism that 'managed' the 'b' in 'and'.   :-P   A simple example is 'bu' vs. 'by'. The fingers either don't move far enough or are entirely misplaced. I now use likely keyboard mis-fingerings when I run out of deletions/transpositions/vowel-changes. Royal Medal

Thanks for correcting the typo here. The context of the typo (it was in a quote, and in a title of a paper in a quote, no less) means I've reverted it. Keep up the good work, though! Not really; it is the title of a book. In that context it is spelt entirely correctly. Errors within the quote itself are a different matter, however; I'll get onto those when I have time. Ironholds (talk) 12:48, 29 December 2008 (UTC)

New article, same name

hello LilHelpa,

I would like to write a new article about my students organization (www.iaasworld.org) and discovered that the name is already taken by a Nepalese research institute. How can I create a page that clarifies which IAAS one wants to find when typing it in the search box? Or is this something editors do?

on other thing: I am also updating the infos on the German page of this organization, the name has changed recently though. Can I also change the titel of the article somehow? (see http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/International_Association_of_Agricultural_Students; it should be International Association of Students in Agricultural and Related Sciences)

Thanks for your help in this Sebastian Oltmanns (talk) 14:22, 14 January 2009 (UTC)

IAAS

Hi LilHelpa,

thanks for the fast answer! It is true that the article exist already, I would much rather have it under the abbreviation (IAAS) than under the full name as noone will ever want to type it in I guess. The conflict of interest with the Nepalese institute also does not appear in the german version but in the english one in case we would shift the article to IAAS. Therefore, I would like to suggest to create a disambiguation page "IAAS" leading to the two sites "Institute of Agriculture and Animal Science Rampur, Nepal" and "International Association of Students in Agricultural and Related Sciences ". Would this be possible? In case two different topics are not enough, there is also other versions of IAAS such as the "International Association of Academies of Science", "International Association for Astronomical Studies" and others.

in the article called "International Association of Students in Agricultural and Related Sciences" it is also asked to give some references, even indicated for which part. As I am totally new here, would a link to the site of a university be enough here like this one: http://ects.czu.cz/en/?r=227? I mean, where and how do you proof something like this? In our field, everyone knows that Monsanto and Bayer CropScience are two of the leading companies in crop sciences, where where is it written down as proof for an encyclopedia...

thanks, Sebastian Oltmanns (talk) 14:02, 15 January 2009 (UTC)

IAAS

Hey LilHelpa!

I have implemented the changes, think it should be fine like this. Will still have to do a lot on the article "International Association of Students in Agricultural and Related Sciences" but this will follow. One little question to this page: It is asked to give some references, even indicated for which part. As I am totally new here, would a link to the site of a university be enough (as external reference) like this one: http://ects.czu.cz/en/?r=227? I mean, where and how do you proof something like this? And who will be checking if it is fine then / who will put the box away?

Thanks Sebastian Oltmanns (talk) 17:04, 15 January 2009 (UTC)

Thanks for your help so far. I got the point and will work myself a bit more into the topic. cheers, Sebastian Oltmanns (talk) 21:24, 15 January 2009 (UTC)

Hi, in case you're not already aware of it, I thought I would alert you to the fact that you've been mentioned in a few places: WP:AN#Unauthorized bot? and WP:Bot owners' noticeboard#Unauthorized bot?

Don't worry about the occasional criticism about a mistake or accusation of being a bot. You're doing a great job!  MANdARAX • XAЯAbИAM  03:50, 8 February 2009 (UTC)

Did that do the trick, or is there still a problem? Best regards, -- Ssilvers (talk) 22:24, 8 February 2009 (UTC)

BTW, personally, I don't like the cite templates. They do act as a nice checklist, but they reduce flexibility of how the cite turns out. I know that the FA administrators don't prefer them either, although a lot of the GA reviewers like them. Wikipedia is a crazy place. -- Ssilvers (talk) 22:34, 8 February 2009 (UTC)

FA means WP:Featured Articles and GA means WP:Good Articles. If you want to see what concerns the editors working on the best articles in Wikipedia, check out the review process at WP:Featured Articles and work on a couple of FA reviews. Then you will get a good sense of what we are ultimately working towards. Feel free to ask me any questions, but I think you're doing great. -- Ssilvers (talk) 22:53, 8 February 2009 (UTC)

Having seen your corrections to Feruary in one of the articles I watch, I decided to work on the last 4 months. I may not have found everything that you would. (You are very intentive looking for mispellings) but I did work on them. Just letting you know in case you are wondering why searches for things like decmber come up with hits which have been fixed...

Still need to get to a few of the Decmber's and all of the Dcember's, but I'm heading home. If you want to do them, fine, otherwise I'll get to them within a day or two. BTW, at this point I'm only looking in the mainspace, though I should probably include templates as well. I don't care how badly people misspell things on their talk pages. :)Naraht (talk) 00:23, 25 February 2009 (UTC)

Ümit Kaftancıog˘lu

Hello,

I am researching assassinated persons and came across the name "Ümit Kaftancıog˘lu" in the encyclopedia. I noticed you recently edited his article, and my question is how do I reproduce this name on a standard keyboard? Is that a numeral "1" after the "c" in his last name? Thank you. Tex Settle, fresh from the typing pool, is in need of copyedit. Not only it's your "favorite" Hindu grammar, the whole article is so far a collection of disjointed sketches, but, unless someone steals his Pentagon file, it's what available. Thanks in advance, and then you can check other installments in the Ring of the Balloons: Osoaviakhim-1, USSR-1, Georgy Prokofiev (these are, at least, cohesive in contents). Yours truly, NVO (talk) 19:23, 22 April 2009 (UTC)

Thanks for your copyedits to Tex Settle. I especially appreciate your effort to use correct dashes; few people pay attention to this sort of thing. However, I wonder if you realize that when you added html dash code (— and –), you were just overwriting the actual emdash and endash characters (— and –) with it. No harm done, but I hate to see someone who actually knows how to use dashes spend their time fixing ones that ain't broke :) Perhaps your browser font isn't displaying the varying types of dashes distinctly? Why is "it's" wrong?

I see you have a major drive in changing "it's" to "its". But why is "it's" wrong? I thought apostrophes were used in contractions "Do not" to "Don't" and used to show possession like "Fred's". Isn't "it's" something possessed by "it"? -OOPSIE- (talk) 04:33, 2 May 2009 (UTC)

Thanks for asking! "It's" is almost always wrong on Wikipedia as we try to avoid contractions. But beyond that, the possessive form is "its", not "it's". As always, though, contractions and bad grammar in quotations and titles (where correctly copied into Wikipedia from the originals) must remain. LilHelpa (talk) 11:41, 2 May 2009 (UTC)
I see wrong uses of "It's" in Wikipedia when it should be "Its" and correct it, but sometimes it is correct. I will take a look at avoid contractions, though. --DThomsen8 (talk) 12:20, 23 June 2009 (UTC)

Script

Hi. I am in the process of developing a script to automatically correct common misspellings in articles. The initial goal is for users to have a button at the top of the article which will open an edit window and do a search/replace to correct common misspellings. When the script completes, it then shows the changes and allows the editor to decide if the changes were correct. The goal is to have as few falsely corrected entries, so some of the entries on WP:LCM wouldn't be added. If you are interested in trying it out, let me know. My initial prototype only has entries from the "A" page. There are probably some minor bugs in there as well, but it won't commit any changes without approval. The script is at User:Symplectic Map/spell.js and you just have to include it in your monobook.js file, e.g., User:Symplectic Map/monobook.js. If you are using something other than the standard theme, it would have to be included there instead. It should work on Firefox and Google Chrome. I haven't tested Internet Explorer. If you know of another script for doing this sort of thing, please let me know, so I don't unnecessarily waste any time. Thanks! Symplectic Map (talk) 20:54, 13 May 2009 (UTC)

Congrats

Nice to see these DYK noms on your page. Regards, MarmadukePercy (talk) 14:57, 26 June 2009 (UTC)

Incidentally, I thought I would go on a wikibreak there for awhile, but that did not come to pass, so if you'd still like me to be a consultant/mentor/etc., please let me know. Take care. MarmadukePercy (talk) 20:58, 7 July 2009 (UTC)

Possible move of Nazi plunder

I have started a discussion on possibly moving Nazi plunder. As you are currently a reasonably active editor, as well as a past contributor to the article, I hope you can find some time to make comments at renaming Nazi plunder. Unschool 17:46, 4 July 2009 (UTC)

[This] article has been in Wikipedia from several years. Last July 15-2009 somebody from IP # 147.70.118.96 was vandalizing several times the article, into a few minutes interval. In the same moment I reverted to its rigth version, a minute later somebody named "el estremenu", vandalized again. ( probably it was the same from IP # 147.70.118.96)--I requested protection to the article. An hour after the article was protected , another user of name "bjweeks", nominated the article for deletion!! this is unbelievable since this article has been long time there, everybody liked and has also been rated as star-class by wikiproject. I assume that the person that is nominating the article for deletion is probably the same that was vandalizing it before. And also I assume this is a competitor of Rodolfo Valentin just trying to hurt his profile. Please help to keep this good article and remove the deletion request. thank you 71.190.75.176 (talk) 20:37, 16 July 2009 (UTC)

I'll have a look, but I can't remove the deletion request LilHelpa (talk) 23:45, 16 July 2009 (UTC)
