Heyo. So I noticed that you added Category:Disasters in Los Angeles to Category:Wildfires in Los Angeles County, California. Be careful not to over-categorize. Take Griffith Park Fire for example... It is already in Category:Wildfires in Los Angeles County, California... Since that category is now inside the Disasters in Los Angeles Category, adding the article itself to the Disasters category is redundant. I think I added new Disasters cat to individual 'LA fire' articles, before adding their parent [Category:Wildfires in Los Angeles County, California] to [Category:Disasters in Los Angeles], and overlooked going back to 'de-cat' those articles. — Look2See1 t a l k → 18:40, 25 August 2017 (UTC)

Non-existent categories

Please observe WP:REDNOT and only create links to categories that exist. If they don't exist, either create the category, or don't create the link in the first place. Just the act of creating a new category will often highlight mistakes - for instance here you created a red-link category Category:Geography of French Southern and Antarctic Lands - if you'd either used HotCat or gone up to the parent category, you would have seen that there's an existing category Category:Geography of the French Southern and Antarctic Lands. Not only are you making life more difficult for maintenance bots, you're also creating a lot of work for other Wikipedians, who have better things to do than correcting your mistakes. Cheers. Sorry for category I semi-created & used mistakenly. I think I later found the existing Category:Geography of the French Southern and Antarctic Lands & used it on relevant articles, but mistakenly forgot & left the incorrect 'semi-created new one' on a/some edits not closed until days later, my apologies.
Please try not to overdramatize just one REDNOT mistake with "making life more difficult" & "difficulty for bots" & "creating a lot of work" — it is the first WP:REDNOT mistake I've made in hundreds/thousands of new categories I've created over many years, and only a singular humble human error of this type. @Le Deluge: Look2See regularly creates more work for other editors by wrong categorizing work. The multiple notices posted to this talk page by multiple editors and Look2See's usual silence (Granted they replied here) has had me on the verge of bringing all the complaints to ANI in order for the community to assess his contributions around here. BTW Look2See, when are you going to fix the problems as you were asked here[1]?...William, is the complaint department really on the roof? 16:15, 26 August 2017 (UTC)
@Look2See1 - it's far from the first red category I've fixed of yours, I just don't complain about it normally. But this one would have been easily caught if you were using WP:Hotcat - got to Preferences | Gadgets to enable it, it puts buttons by the category links which allow you to change them with the help of autocomplete. Category:Botanists active in North America

An interesting question about Category:Botanists active in North America is whether "North America" should have the same meaning as in the flora distribution categories, i.e. the same as in Category:Flora of North America. If so, neither Category:Botanists active in the Caribbean nor Category:Botanists active in Central America should be subcategories of this category.

(I've long thought that it was a serious mistake use "North America" rather than "Northern America" in the name of the category Category:Flora of North America; it continually misleads editors not familiar with the WGSRPD system, and leads to the kind of mismatch found here.) Wilson High School (Los Angeles)

I see you've made significant changes to the Wilson HS page before so I'm contacting you for support. I made many significant improvements in August, and I invite you to look. Since then another editor first deleted a citation with no justification, an anon user undid that change, then that editor deleted the citation again. I didn't notice this until I made another addition to the alumni section in September. At that time I reinserted the citation. But now I find that editor has deleted not just the citation but the whole section of text on "popular culture" that citation was part of. I indicated to that editor (s)he should justify major deletions on the talk page but (s)he just reverted anyway. Please take a look and and if you agree, support me on the talk page. If this turns into an edit war I'm going to have to ask for moderation, but maybe just support from another editor like you will make that person be reasonable and stop.Lapabc (talk) 00:03, 7 October 2017 (UTC)

Tree deaths

Hi, please would you move categories such as Category:1890s individual tree deaths out of Category:1890s deaths (etc), as the "deaths" categories are part of Category:Dead people rather than dead animals, plants or anything else. – Fayenatic London 21:46, 12 October 2017 (UTC)

Notes / References

Just a short note (ahem) that "notes" and "references" are both acceptable as section header for the footnotes or references section, and that it is usually considered bad form to change one to the other (barring a good reason to do so on a specific article of course). I will not revert back your change here, as it isn't that important, but in the future it may be better to just leave such a header alone. Fram (talk) 06:40, 19 October 2017 (UTC)

Hi Fram, in my viewings of numerous articles 'References' is in preponderant use if there is only one header (as your example above). When there are two headers, 'Notes' is predominantly used for inline reference citations, and 'References' for non-inline cited other sources, often print books not online. Per WP:SORTKEY, this is how you properly sort the following:

Album categories

When there is no [Category:Artist's name] created yet, & only [Category:Artist's albums], then that is the best we can do for directing artists' biography article readers interested in more info at this time. This is especially true when there is also no {Artist's template} to place on Artist's albums/songs cats. Otherwise [Category:Artist's albums] is an 'orphan category' disassociated from the artist. I have created a few new [Category:Artist's name] for some major recording artists with several subcategories. Perhaps you can that for the others that concern you? Could you please explain why album covers aren't categorized under albums by artist? If one is looking at an artist's album articles, opening the album cover subcat above for an image seems most efficient. This seems especially true when there is no [Category:Artist's name] created yet, to 'parent-link' all the recording artist's subcats together. Look at category:R.E.M. albums and category:R.E.M. album covers: they are interlinked by {{catseealso}}. That's how several dozen of these are done. Per Koavf's comments, do not place "albums by artist" categories under "rappers" and "musicians". Most artists will not have and do not need eponymous categories and it only confuses readers who see albums or songs by an artist inappropriately categorized in a category for people. Remember the artist's article will be categorized in appropriate "musician" categories, so the categories about the albums or songs should never be. --StarcheerspeaksnewslostwarsTalk to me 21:05, 21 October 2017 (UTC)

Also, please don't place an artist's albums category in the artist's article page. Album categories are for albums period. A person interested in seeing category can easily navigate there from one of the album's articles. Hi Cullen328, I didn't add Category:Members of the California State Assembly, it was there already & I only 'cat sorted' it. However, since Willie Brown wasn't always Speaker, having that cat. does acknowledge his efforts/public service as a 'basic' Assembly member that lead to his attaining the position. Category logic?

Hi. Could you explain your logic or rationale for rearranging the categories (here) at Ralph Vary Chamberlin? Generally categories are alphabetical following any eponymous categories, per Wikipedia:Categorization#Articles. Blaschke not a computational geometer

Can you please explain why you keep trying to put Wilhelm Blaschke, a differential geometer, into Category:Researchers in geometric algorithms, a category for computational geometers, that is, people who study computer algorithms for geometric problems? And also why you are removing him from Category:Differential geometers where he clearly belongs? Although Blaschke survived until 1962, computational geometry was not really studied until well after that, and our article on Blaschke says nothing about algorithms.

Relatedly, when you change an article category, can you please use edit summaries to make it clear to other editors what you are doing and why you are doing it? —David Eppstein (talk) 02:03, 5 November 2017 (UTC)
