Siege of Derry

Dear Lord Cornwallis. You recently thanked me for an edit on the article Siege of Derry. I thought that was very nice of you. I hope it is okay if I contact you and that writing a note on your talk page is the right way to do this. I am still quite new to Wikipedia. The article Siege of Derry is still rated Start-Class for all three projects concerned and has two Needs-additional-citations-for-verification messages. I think the article should probably be rated C, and the two messages should be removed. However, it does not feel right for me to make these changes. I am too involved and evidently biased. Perhaps can you? But perhaps the promotion to C should be done by members of the projects in each case? With thanks, Johannes Johannes Schade (talk) 08:04, 10 January 2019 (UTC)

Not sure what someone did with the filmography for this one

For a page I made a while back LeRoy Stone, apparently they changed some stuff, which I did correct the links, but some of the titles are still saying stuff like "edited by" Wgolf (talk) 21:08, 3 March 2019 (UTC)

A tag has been placed on Ralph Oberg requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section A7 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the article appears to be about a real person or group of people that does not credibly indicate how or why the subject is important or significant: that is, why an article about that subject should be included in an encyclopedia. Under the criteria for speedy deletion, such articles may be deleted at any time. Please read more about what is generally accepted as notable.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. If the page is deleted, and you wish to retrieve the deleted material for future reference or improvement, then please contact the deleting administrator. Toddst1 (talk) 22:39, 25 April 2019 (UTC)

Public domain images

Hello! Thanks for uploading so many classic film posters and images. Note that works first published in the United States before 1924, including film stills, posters, and advertisements, are freely in the public domain (at least in the U.S., where Wikipedia is based), and thus files like File:The Drifters (film).jpg, likely created in 1919, do not need to be restricted to non-free use, and can be uploaded as full size with {{PD-US}}. An even better option is to upload such public domain images to Wikimedia Commons, where they can be curated, categorized, and more easily be used by other Wikimedia projects. See Wikipedia:Moving files to Commons and Commons:Licensing for more info. Cheers! --Animalparty! (talk) 18:11, 21 March 2019 (UTC)

I have saved you the trouble of transferring File:Her Accidental Husband.jpg to Commons. Note: a great source to verify pre-1924 U.S. publication is the Internet Archive, e.g. the image in question can be found here. Copyright expiration for the U.S. is notably different than that of the UK or Canada, but the U.S.'s blanket cutoff of anything before 1924 makes things much simpler than trying to track down the death dates of artists and anonymous photographers. --Animalparty! Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. An automated process has detected that when you recently edited Keep Smiling (1925 film), you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page James Diamond (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). Such links are usually incorrect, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of unrelated topics with similar titles. (Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.)

The Fire Ship

Found The Fire Ship on someone's page which it looks like there are 2 films with the German title, so you could make another page for that (I was going why is there a link to a 1922 film on someone who was born AFTER 1922?), just wanted to point this out really quick you can see what links to it! BTW great job on adding tons of obscure films. Wgolf (talk) 03:36, 5 June 2019 (UTC)

Thanks for the heads up. I've created the 1963 film now and fixed the links. Lord Cornwallis (talk) 12:31, 5 June 2019 (UTC)
Welcome, I have found various different people and films on articles you have made (Like one just took me a while as the one that it was linked to had tons of links to the name so I had to see which was right) Wgolf (talk) 00:47, 11 June 2019 (UTC)
One odd case came with I have no clue what year the film came out. As I found pages linked to Pepita Jiménez (film), which was from 1972 but for a film from either 1945 or 1946-I did Pepita Jiménez (1946 film), but it might be from 1945. I have no clue what to say as pages have it listed under both. (If you ever add this page that is) Wgolf (talk) 00:39, 13 June 2019 (UTC)

A cheeseburger for you!

Thanks for all the hard work! (I found one name linked to some film pages that turned the person link to it now into a orphan-oh well I'm sure someone will do something someday)

Anyway, great job! Wgolf (talk) 00:55, 16 June 2019 (UTC)

Notice

The article Alexandra Anatra has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

I can't find any evidence that she is notable. The listed source mentions her once, without further information, as part of the crew of one film. Other sources mentioning her all seem to be similar, just a name in a list of people who worked on this or that movie, nothing really about her.

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, pages may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the page to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. Disputed non-free use rationale for File:Death Stone.jpg

Thank you for uploading File:Death Stone.jpg. However, there is a concern that the rationale provided for using this file on Wikipedia may not meet the criteria required by Wikipedia:Non-free content. This can be corrected by going to the file description page and adding or clarifying the reason why the file qualifies under this policy. Adding and completing one of the templates available from Wikipedia:Non-free use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your file is in compliance with Wikipedia policy. Please be aware that a non-free use rationale is not the same as an image copyright tag; descriptions for files used under the non-free content policy require both a copyright tag and a non-free use rationale.

If it is determined that the file does not qualify under the non-free content policy, it might be deleted by an administrator seven days after the file was tagged in accordance with section F7 of the criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions, please ask them at the media copyright questions page. Thank you. Whpq (talk) 14:49, 16 October 2019 (UTC)

A tag has been placed on File:Lady Dracula.jpg requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section F7 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because it is a non-free file with a clearly invalid licensing tag; or it otherwise fails some part of the non-free content criteria. If you can find a valid tag that expresses why the file can be used under the fair use guidelines, please replace the current tag with that tag. If no such tag exists, please add the {{Non-free fair use}} tag, along with a brief explanation of why this constitutes fair use of the file. If the file has been deleted, you can re-upload it, but please ensure you place the correct tag on it.

Information icon Hello, I'm Andrzejbanas. I noticed that you added or changed content in an article but you didn't provide a reliable source. It's been removed and archived in the page history for now, but if you'd like to include a citation and re-add it, please do so. You can have a look at the tutorial on citing sources, or if you think I made a mistake, you can leave me a message on my talk page. Thank you. Andrzejbanas (talk) 00:51, 15 November 2019 (UTC)

Information icon Please do not add or change content without citing a reliable source. Please review the guidelines at Wikipedia:Citing sources and take this opportunity to add references to the article. Thank you. Specifically, make sure your sources are stating everything that is being said. Does the year stated in your sources specifically say its a release date? or is it just a year? Also, the genre was not listed in some of your sources. Andrzejbanas (talk) 01:16, 15 November 2019 (UTC)

Greetings My Lord,

I have corrected, however, if this was added by a "template" it may of also be on other pages your created or edited and owing to the bucket load of work you do/have done I am not sure how to check.

Lia Di Leo

Hi there,

In 2016 you created the page Lia Di Leo, saying she was born on 17 August 1931 (see here). May I ask where you got this information? Because according to her IMDB page she was born in 1923 and died in 2006. That seems to be based on this obituary but I'm not certain it's the same person.

A tag has been placed on Category:Swiss Composers requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section C1 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the category has been empty for seven days or more and is not a disambiguation category, a category redirect, a featured topics category, under discussion at Categories for discussion, or a project category that by its nature may become empty on occasion.

Liz Read! Talk! 13:21, 9 May 2020 (UTC)

Olive Branch

Sir: You have explained a frustration that the American War for Independence as presently organized does NOT carry a narrative embracing the entirety of the worldwide conflict over those years, start to finish, among all participants. But British Commonwealth and American editors can both defer to J.R. Seeley, the noted British historian to sort the chronology and historiography of the period in world history.

I looked at your RS reference published at the Smithsonian - David Allison & Larrie D. Ferreiro. The American Revolution: A World War. 2018, see Amazon “Look Inside” feature, viewed May 5, 2020. - - - There in the Forward, Smithsonian scholar John L. Gray, notes “The period between 1689 and 1815 was dubbed the "Second Hundred Years' War" by the British historian John Robert Seeley, and the name has stuck."

At Second Hundred Years' War (a C-class article), all sections are VERY abbreviated. Its list of wars nests the Revolution (1775-1783) inside the Anglo-French War (a B-class article). Much needs to be done to do the topic justice. Still, already there we have most of your RS for the events that you so rightly want placed front and center in the continuing worldwide conflict. Nine hits for the RS you've called out this cycle at Talk: Dull, Hagan, Makesey (2), McMaster, O'Shaughnessy (2), Stockley, Stoker, Syrett.

I hope you can find a way to use the good EURO-centric RS to explain the worldwide conflicts 1745-1815 in the narrative at Second Hundred Years' War, rather than trying to editorially ask the American War for Independence to shoulder the burden accounting for conflicts among the European powers worldwide after the Treaty of Paris (1783) - - - those among European powers and their allies that violate Britain’s separate treaties with France at the Treaty of Versailles (1783-a), and with Spain at the Treaty of Versailles (1783-b).

Again, I am personally very interested in the naval and maritime history that your RS bring to the fore. Sincerely, TheVirginiaHistorian (talk) 11:35, 6 May 2020 (UTC)

I think if we all met in a bar sometime we could all have a really interesting discussion of the primary sources, but that isn't how Wikipedia works. We need to go with the RS.
But can I just say I'm also very interested in Virginian history (and that of Kentucky and West Virginia) and as I've expressed on the talk page, I think we are all trying to improve this important article for the benefit of readers. Regards, Lord Cornwallis (talk) 23:48, 9 May 2020 (UTC)

1. Update on my learning curve; 2. recent contribution for review; 3. consult

My dear Lord Cornwallis:

# 1. UPDATE ON MY LEARNING CURVE. Thank you for the collegial "leg up" on Euro history with your reading list of sources that back up your understanding of the scope of the American Revolutionary War. I have now come to understand the European RS “War of the American Revolution”, so we now have as UNCONTROVERSIAL at American Revolutionary War, US ally France, co-belligerent Spain, co-belligerent Dutch Republic. You were right and I was wrong. I hope I can continue to learn and grow.
- It happens that over the past two weeks I have spent from four to ten hours reading into several European RS that you provided for me to read a couple months ago, and a couple others, and stumbling on the occasional good-un website, like the Loyal Edmonton Regiment Military Museum for Canadian Military History at the Prince of Wales Armouries Heritage Centre, Alberta, Canada.
- Principally I’ve immersed myself in European military and diplomatic history of the late 1700s: Clodfelter, Davenport, Eggenberger, Mackesey, Mahan, Morris, Falkner, Ferreiro, Simms, Weeks, and park museum curator Chartrand, my favorite of the un-degreed amateur historians: Gibraltar Timeline, p. 17: 1782, January 20 [preliminary] peace between Britain and France & Spain . . . so that’s AFTER the preliminary peace with the Americans November 20, 1782. (Don’t laugh at me, I read Mahan, don’t I? I can like Chartrand; well they are not exactly the equivalent weight . . . My general position staked out at Talk:ARW for a wp:reliable source still holds . . .)
# 2. CONTRIBUTION. A kind of summary of my findings has been posted at Great Siege of Gibraltar, first three paragraphs at the introduction, beginning with the term “War of the American Revolution” (used in the Euro Eggenberger cite contributed by another wiki-editor, and also Clodfelter), ending in the collaborative first sentence of the third paragraph:

The Great Siege of Gibraltar was an unsuccessful attempt by Spain and France to capture Gibraltar from the British during the War of the American Revolution. [Eggenberger p. 172]

Spain declared war on Britain in 1779 the year after France based on its Third Pacte de Famille between the Bourbon kings. The supplemental Treaty of Aranjuez (1779) was made to recover Bourbon territories lost at the Treaty of Paris (1783) and the military glory lost to Britain in the Seven Years' War. When Spain joined France as an ally against Britain, it became a formal co-belligerent with the United States Congress in its war against Britain. [Davenport, p. 168]

However the first war aim for Spain at Aranjuez was to recover the Fortress at Gibraltar which had been lost to the British at the 1715 Peace of Utrecht. Gibraltar commanded the North Atlantic entrance to the Mediterranean Sea, and at the Spanish declaration of war against Britain on June 16 1779, the British base at Gibraltar was vulnerable. [Eggenberger, p. 172]

# 3. CONSULT: The term "War of the American Revolution" search is redirected to American Revolutionary War, something we may want to address by creating the "SISTER ARTICLE" recommended by Lord Cornwallis and agreed to by Gwillhickers and three other editors at Talk:ARW. It can be titled War of the American Revolution, to fit in with the standardized MILITARY PROJECT nomenclature used in the Second Hundred Years' War, War of Spanish Succession, and War of Austrian Succession.
- The sister article War of the American Revolution can have appropriate linking in sections devoted to American Revolutionary War, France in the American Revolution, Spain in the American Revolution, and in another category of related articles, Second Hundred Years' War, Anglo-French War (1778) and Anglo-Spanish War (1779).
- You may be aware of the Eastfarthingan and XavierGreen proposal to merge Anglo-French War (1778) with "France in the American Revolution" as has been done previously with the Anglo-Spanish War (1779) into "Spain in the American Revolution", with a redirection link for the Spanish war term search. QUERY: How do those merges impact the Wikipedia organization (consistency) of the Military History Project articles, Anglo-French Wars, Anglo-Spanish Wars, and Second Hundred Years' War?

Sincerely, TheVirginiaHistorian (talk) 14:52, 31 July 2020 (UTC)

Thanks for the update. Obviously a lot of discussion has taken place since I was last involved so I'll need to do some catching up on what has been said. I'm supportive of a compromise of some kind. Generally I would say that the term "American War of Independence" was the most common term for the international war.
Regards, Lord Cornwallis (talk) 20:10, 31 July 2020 (UTC)

Thanks for the courtesy of a reply. I was sort of hoping to make a pitch to you for a "comprehensive settlement" to fit into an overall Wikipedia article organization to maintain some consistency across articles, perhaps with a formal proposal to the MILITARY PROJECT, thusly:

(. . . still not sure where an [Anglo-French War (1778)], or [Anglo-Spanish War (1779)] might go in this schema . . . one RS calls them together, the concurrent "European war of 1778-83" (Simms 2007, p. 681) among the western Great Powers, worldwide.)

JW Johnston/e - Actor

Hi Lord Cornwallis

I noted that sometime back in 2019 and possibly earlier you have made changes to the JW Johnston - Actor pages in wiki. This gentleman is my husband's 1st cousin 2x removed -that is my husband's great Grandmother was John William Michael Johnston's Aunt, his father was her brother. I am in the process of putting together a short bio of him for the family and wonder if there is any information you can provide for me about how JW got into acting, any articles in US magazine's or newspapers of the time, or programme's for any of the stage productions he was in, I have a lot of facts but not enough of the life story. Information about what salary he would have received etc would also be of interest.

I have no idea if this is how to contact you - hopefully it will find you :) Not sure if this will work, but if it does, you can find my via linda at klassenbrown dot co dot uk

I look forward to hearing from you in due course.

ArbCom 2020 Elections voter message

Hello! Voting in the 2020 Arbitration Committee elections is now open until 23:59 (UTC) on Monday, 7 December 2020. All eligible users are allowed to vote. Users with alternate accounts may only vote once.

The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.

If you wish to participate in the 2020 election, please review the candidates and submit your choices on the voting page. If you no longer wish to receive these messages, you may add {{NoACEMM}} to your user talk page. MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 01:44, 24 November 2020 (UTC)
