Wikipedia Campus Ambassador[edit]

Hi there, my name is Annie Lin; I am the Campus Team Coordinator for the Wikimedia Foundation. I am emailing you because Wikimedia is launching a new project (the "Public Policy Initiative") for the 2010-2011 academic year and is currently looking for dedicated Wikipedians near the George Washington University and Georgetown University areas to serve as the project's Campus Ambassadors, and I thought you might be interested.

More details about the Wikipedia Campus Ambassador role can be found at http://outreach.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia_Campus_Ambassador. Here is also a little bit more information; in a nutshell: The Campus Ambassadors are crucial components of the Wikipedia Public Policy Initiative. Volunteers in this role will mainly be in charge of providing face-to-face training and support for professors and students on Wikipedia-related skills, such as how to create new articles, how to add images, how the talk pages work, etc. Campus Ambassadors will also help recruit other people on campus to contribute to Wikipedia articles, for example by setting up Wikipedia-related student groups and by organizing "Welcome to Wikipedia" social events. In general they will become known as Wikipedia experts on the university campus (in your case, on the GWU or Georgetown University campus). The estimated time commitment for this role is 3-5 hours a week, possibly slightly more at the very beginning and very end of the semester. The Wikimedia Foundation will hold a mandatory three-day training for all Campus Ambassadors in August, and will continue to stay in contact with and offer full support for the Campus Ambassadors throughout the academic semester.

Please let me know if this is something that sounds interesting to you, so we can talk about next steps in the application process. Feel free to respond on my talk page or email me (alin@wikimedia.org). Thanks, and I look forward to hearing back from you!

Public Policy Campus Ambassador's want to talk to you[edit]

Hey HstryQT, User:Awadewit knows of some children's literature course at Indiana University where she is a Campus Ambassador for the Public Policy Initiative. We kindof threw around the idea that the Children's Museum might be interested in cooperating with such a course in creating content. Though there aren't any such courses incorporating Wikipedia into the class in the fall, we thought it might be an interesting proposition. I hope you will get in touch with her, Sadads (talk) 12:03, 13 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks! I definitely will. I've been meaning to get in touch with Adrianne for awhile now, so this is great. Appreciate it! HstryQT (talk) 18:51, 13 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Wikipedia:GLAM/TCMI/BackstagePass[edit]

Just noticed this on my watchlist; thanks for putting it together! I'd love to come, but I have a class that begins toward the end of lunchtime. Since I'm new at IU, I've never paid attention to Indiana-related Wikimedia events before; have you helped to put together other such events in the past? Nyttend (talk) 19:05, 3 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks! Unfortunately, the November date won't work either, as I have a Tuesday evening class. I've sent Awadewit a note; perhaps she and I can meet at some point. One other question — are there any library-related components to your project? I'm specifically a Master of Library Science student; your work sounds appealing to me, but it might be even more appealing if there are library elements as well. Nyttend (talk) 21:16, 3 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

My issue is more one of not being anywhere near Indianapolis that week, or much at all for the rest of the year. But the TCMI staff is good people, especially if any of the ones I knew are still there - so it sounds like you've got a good partnership put together! Good luck, and sorry I couldn't be of more help. Enjoy, UltraExactZZ Said ~ Did 16:47, 6 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Sharing the gratitude[edit]

I can't go to the Children's Museum[edit]

So I bumped up the waiting list. I'm posting this to User talk:Bburk and User talk:HstryQT. Have fun without me! —Justin (koavf)TCM☯ 17:37, 31 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks! This might work nicely, actually... I have a new job (hence, no go for the Children's Museum), but it gets out in Greenwood at 5:00 and I live near Northwest High School, so getting to the IMA at 6:00 makes sense. Count me in as a definite maybe. —Justin (koavf)TCM☯ 00:16, 2 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]
In case you didn't notice... I didn't make it; I was just worn out from this job (which is not strenuous, but I've been doing nothing for three years, so anything will make me tired.) Anyway, if there are more events in Indianapolis, I would definitely be interested. Thanks. —Justin (koavf)TCM☯ 18:05, 6 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks Justin. Sorry you couldn't make it to the events. I hope you're able to check in at the project page; there will be much more photos and content to organize soon and the TCMI staff is very excited to share information and work together with Wikipedians. Also do a quick search for the Children's Museum of Indianapolis category in commons; there are pictures from the backstage pass and a handful of object photos going up. They will be releasing a lot of their own photos as cc-by-sa here soon. Thanks! HstryQT (talk) 18:32, 6 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Waiting list for Children's Museum[edit]

Hello,

My husband, who retired from his job of lo, these many years, last week, was interested in giving me some photography support at the Backstage event, but I just checked and saw the signup was closed. Could he be puton the waiting list?

Janeway1701 (talk) 16:46, 2 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, both my husband and I will be coming on Friday. Thank you! Janeway1701 (talk) 04:35, 5 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

RE: Children's Museum backstage pass[edit]

Yes, I am able to confirm that. I'm looking forward to the event. Thanks. Backtable Speak to meconcerning my deeds. 21:51, 4 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Adoption requests[edit]

Hi there! I saw that you were the teacher's assistant for the program, so I thought I'd drop a note explaining the status of the adoption program. Adopt-a-user is geared toward editors that have the intention of staying with Wikipedia for quite a while, not for editors that are here for a school project (most of them will most likely leave upon completion of the project). This is because the adopters involved in the program generally "teach lessons" on the basics of Wikipedia editing, article building, conflict resolution, and other topics that will be useful to editors. Adopters may also follow and check their student's adoptee's edits to make sure they comply with policies and guidelines, this creating a better editor. Thus, adopters typically spend a lot of time and effort showing their adoptee's how Wikipedia works and how to improve their editing. Yes, we do want the students to edit professionally and gain knowledge, but adopt-a-user does not seem like the best way to do that. The basic reason is that we do not feel that spending tons of time and resources on editors that will probably leave Wikipedia upon completion of the project is fair to the adopters and to those adoptees that are here to stay. Perhaps the campus ambassador program would be better? Of course, adoption or participation in any project is not needed for them to get help! They could always visit the new contributor's help page, use the {{helpme}} template, or ask me or any other editor for assistance. Thank you for your understanding and I look forward to finding the best solution for the students. Netalarmtalk 21:08, 6 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks Netalarm! Those are all perfectly understandable reasons for not being geared towards university assignments. I admit that including the adopt-a-user project in the assignment was a bit of an experiment, and I'm sorry to not first ask you or other adopt-a-user leaders about it first. Appreciate you taking the time to touch base! HstryQT (talk) 21:33, 6 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]
There's actually a program that's perfect for the students. Check out the Wikipedia:Ambassadors program. This was initially created as part of the Public Policy Initiative. But as always, we're all here to help (helpme template, talk pages). Netalarmtalk 21:41, 6 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Carousel article[edit]

I think I might have time to write a small article like Broad Ripple Park Carousel. If you could provide me with a list of good sources for it, that would help a lot. Just list them on the talk page and I'll try to get the article to GA or FA over the next few months. Awadewit (talk) 02:24, 8 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks, that sounds great! I'll put that at the top of my list and try to get to gathering info this or next week. You can also keep your eye out in the TCMI Commons category for a carousel picture. Someone from the backstage pass day may post a good one before we're able to upload one on the museum's side. Appreciate it! HstryQT (talk) 02:30, 8 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

RE: Children's Museum project[edit]

Hey, thank you much for the information and the links. I have been meaning to check out the photographs taken from the museum, and I do have a stash of photographs on my phone and, to a lesser extent, on my mother's camera. It was a great experience being there and learning about such artifacts and history. I would like to put some of the pictures on wikimedia, because I have several pictures I took which seem like they could belong on this site. I'm looking forward to what comes out of this event and its respective media. Backtable Speak to meconcerning my deeds. 01:10, 18 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

RE: Children's Museum project - Urda[edit]

I've had a few family issues come up, but I would actually love to dump all the images my group gathered somewhere for sorting. What would be the appropriate way to do that for Wikipedia? --Urda (talk) 22:21, 18 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

TCMI Project update[edit]

Thanks It looks like a good time was had by all (except me.) I was contacted by a professor from Purdue to give a lecture in one of his classes next semester about Wikipedia. If something interesting comes of it, I'll let you know. —Justin (koavf)TCM☯ 01:25, 19 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Ambassador I expressed interest in being an IU ambassador, but it wasn't feasible at the time. If something's opening up at IUPUI, I'm definitely interested. Thanks. —Justin (koavf)TCM☯ 03:43, 19 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Photos from Backstage Pass[edit]

Hi,

Sorry I've been away from Wikipedia for a couple of weeks due to a couple of other projects. Just to clarify, the images from the Backstage event should concentrate on people plus objects. And photos of objects should go into the Children's Museum subcategory? But when I looked under that category, it seemed that the photos there were intended to be ones released by the museum itself.

Let us know, and we can start putting some photos out. My husband and I had a great time! Thanks to all of the museum staff who took time that day to take us around and talk to us.

WSPA project[edit]

Lori, I'm super confused about how to state the dimensions of my piece. Here's how they appear in the Mimsy doc:27 x 24 x 15 in.; 68.58 x 60.96 x 38.1 cm. Is it LxWxH? Have I put them into my infobox correctly? Mkadams888 (talk) 22:16, 5 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

The directions in the WSPA Style Guide are accurate as far as I'm concerned. The template itself, in the edit screen, should also have guidelines in the comment brackets that should guide you in how to put them in in inches and let it automatically convert to cm. Sometimes other more experienced Wikipedians fiddle with the code in that template, but because there haven't been many other issues with anyone inputting the data, I don't think that its been messed with recently. HstryQT (talk) 23:47, 5 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I guess my question is, if it says 27 x 24 x 15 in. in the Mimsy database, are those measurements the LxWxH? Or the HxLxW? The Style Guide and the template don't give that information, they simply tell you where to put it. Mkadams888 (talk) 00:17, 6 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Image copyright issues[edit]

I posted an updated version of last year's post to Wikipedia:WSPA/IndianaStatehouse/Photo Copyright where I though it was most suitable. Move it if necessary but try make ensure people read it. I will be happy answer specific question on my talk page if anyone needs. Good luck ww2censor (talk) 00:42, 6 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for taking the time to do that. I'll make sure that the class sees it. We've done a lot of clean up today, and there will be more to come. Luckily, due to our fresh understanding about galleries, freedom of panorama, and non-free use, there should never been an instance of 150 deleted images. I know that must have caused a headache. This year it should only amount to a handful of unintentional issues, but otherwise everything that will be uploaded already has been. I'll make sure the class knows of your offer to answer questions. Once again, appreciate your patience. HstryQT (talk) 00:50, 6 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]
No problem. Good luck. ww2censor (talk) 01:11, 6 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Perdue art collection article[edit]

Do you know if there are any freely licenced images available for Indiana University – Purdue University Indianapolis Public Art Collection? There are three non-free images on in the article and none of them has a fair-use rationale for that use, so they may have to be removed though their other uses seem fine. A de minimus photo would also likely be acceptable. Let me know. Cheers ww2censor (talk) 16:46, 6 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Psychic?[edit]

I've had to go back and cut things out of my final paper because everytime I write in a suggestion for change to the whole process or other things that need to be addressed, you turn around and fix it the next day! Are you psychic? Maybe we are on the same mom-brain wavelength.Emtrix (talk) 17:59, 9 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Ha that is funny. We probably do have a similar mom-brain wavelength :). I wouldn't necessarily take stuff out of your analysis/eval though, if you think it's worth noting. All feedback is valuable and will show you're thinking through the process! Happy writing :). HstryQT (talk) 18:13, 9 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Wikipedia:WikiProject Public art[edit]

Just a FYI--In order to comply with WP WikiProject naming guidelines, I've moved some pages and their subpages, such as WP:Public Art, to be under the WP:WikiProject Public art banner and categories. --Funandtrvl (talk) 18:30, 8 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Because just using "Public art" can be confused with the main namespace article, public art, if someone forgets to put the WP: in front of it, it's better to use WP:WikiProject Public art, and make your project pages to be subpages of that project, so that they're easier to find. Please see Category:WikiProject Public art, where I've been trying to collate all the project's subpages. Thanks, --Funandtrvl (talk) 19:48, 8 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you very much for fixing everything. Apologies for missing that naming convention. It does make sense. I was just getting mixed up with the whole short cut thing. Now I'll know for next time, and once again, thanks for taking the time to fix everything and organize it! HstryQT (talk) 20:53, 8 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]
You're welcome! I'm still looking for wayward subpages that might be under one of the shortcuts. I'm also trying to alphabetize the subpages in the project category, still working on it! Glad to be of help --Funandtrvl (talk) 18:07, 9 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

A start ...[edit]

Keep your eyes on this page, as the pics will go up there. Ealdgyth - Talk 22:01, 12 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Wonderful! Thanks so much. I'll enjoy watching them come in. I'll likely begin moving, adding captions next Tuesday when I'm back at the Children's Museum.
Until then, here's a note from Janna in response to me asking about the Indianapolis postcards book: "I don’t believe we have this book. Victoria mentioned a thesis on Indiana Amusement parks that she’d listed on the talk page. I know the thesis advisors for the project though I don’t know the student herself, I would find this to be a good source based on the scholars involved."
Mucho thanks. I got a carousel pic up too, in the article. Now to just survive the last hour or so of my purgatory and then hopefully to finish up some other stuff.... the Painted Ponies book came in and I may need a listing of all the animals on the carousel, if one exists that's been published. Ealdgyth - Talk 23:44, 12 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Update - got the back issue of the Merry Go Roundup that discussed the carousel, and have added most of that information in. Need to access a couple of back items from the Indy Star and some more stuff from the Museum's book (I was holding off putting that in until I had as much as possible from third-party sources) and we'll be looking at polishing and stuff. Are folks there pretty happy with how things are looking? I do have a name for the person who provided the one replacement horse too, it was in the Merry Go Roundup article. Ealdgyth - Talk 00:18, 29 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

GLAM in Alaska?[edit]

I've been working on-and-off on a bid for Wikimania in Anchorage, Alaska for 2012. Unfortunately I seem to have come to the party a bit late and now that it is crunch time I have real-world concerns that are getting in the way. Anyway, I'm wondering of you would be interested in contacting some of the organizations identified [here and seeing if they would be interested in sponsorship/hosting/etc should the bid go forward. I'm not sure it will actually come together in the limited amount of time remaining, but there's always 2013. Beeblebrox (talk) 00:58, 24 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for considering me to help, but I unfortunately have a really full plate with my current responsibilities and wouldn't be able to help much. I also have a vested interested in a DC Wikimania bid, in the interest of full disclosure! Do let me know if you have any other museum-Wikipedia related questions/ideas/concerns. That is my main project of interest. And thanks again! HstryQT (talk) 02:46, 24 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Hallo, I see that you created this category and the associated stub template. You may or may not have known that there is a procedure to go through before creating new stub categories or templates - see Wikipedia:WikiProject Stub sorting, and it doesn't look as if you've done so (though someone else later added the green box which states that it's an official stub category!). I've listed it at WP:WSS/D, and one of the stub gurus will take it up. I'm alerting you because I don't want to be accused (again) of harassment, but the Public Art project is just a part of the whole Wikipedia Encyclopedia project, and needs to follow the rules. PamD (talk) 09:26, 2 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Pam. And thanks for alerting me to the issue. We had gotten off on a really good foot last year and I don't know why you're dragging me into your negative relationship with other project members with your pithy comments. I've done nothing but try to be reasonable and follow the rules. I'm literally "reading the book" on it and doing research for it, so really, please be patient with me. I have a two year old at my feet the entire time I'm doing any of this, so things may slip through the cracks.
Apologies for this mini-outburst but it's extremely frustrating for me to be on the outreach side of Wikipedia trying so hard to get academic and cultural sector professionals involved in the community (and, the hot topic of the moment, MORE WOMEN!), telling them over and over that the negative, attacking community is turning around, only to come in here and have you attack us one day after the next.
Just like last year, I want nothing but to follow the rules and to be aware of them, to do things the right way and to teach others to do so. Help me to do that rather than nitpicking with us and pointing fingers and treating us like children. Thanks. HstryQT (talk) 13:26, 2 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Look, I left you that message out of courtesy, rather than just making the report on the "discoveries" page for someone else to get back to you. And I find that I'm said to "attack us one day after the next." My first contact with your project was painful, in that stuff was getting published in the encyclopedia which was not up to any sort of standard. Since then I have made a few comments, but I don't recognise your accusation. What are you on about? "nitpicking with us and pointing fingers and treating us like children"? Where? Show me the diffs, please. PamD (talk) 14:51, 2 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Having attacked me above, are you going to do me the courtesy of answering my question? PamD (talk) 23:20, 3 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I'm sorry to keep you waiting; I have quite a few plates spinning and have to prioritize. I suppose knowing that this project has been a thorn in your side prompts me to project a negative tone onto every post you write. And that interspersed with JohnBod's unapologetic criticisms that have been continually mounting lately caused me to react. I get frustrated sometimes when I am daily telling people to give Wikipedia a try only to come back and see the many instances of why the community makes it nearly impossible for people to get started. As mentioned above, it's not like me to go off on outbursts, but my people pleasing nature gets the best of me when I find that no matter what I do, it doesn't seem to be right for someone. That someone was you. So I'd rather be done and move on from the drama now -I'm sorry to have caused it- because I truly do not have time for this sort of thing. HstryQT (talk) 19:05, 5 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I'm still waiting. You seem to be part of the "negative, attacking community" you mention. PamD (talk) 18:40, 5 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I suppose in amongst that somewhere is an acknowledgement that there was no substance in your unpleasant response to my constructive message to you. Please be more careful before flying off the handle. I found it very upsetting to be accused in that way. I have interacted with many editors on Wikipedia over the years but can't recall such an attack from any reasonable editor before now. PamD (talk) 10:58, 6 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]
