Doubt about reviewing and indexing

@Notashfaq: There is no need of that tag/template, since the article is not a draft. I've removed it. I can confirm that the article is in the New Page Review queue. As soon as someone marks the page as reviewed, it can be indexed by search engines. Vandalism on Indian constituency pages

Hi. There is an IP which is continuously making disruptive edits on Indian constituency pages. This person changes the party of constituency winners to BJP on many of these pages. Currently undertaking vandalism from this IP. I have tried to revert these changes but the IP user makes the changes again. Could you please check this out? Thanks. I've noticed similar changes on other constituency articles as well. I've reverted their other changes and warned the IP. If it continues we can escalate the warnings upto a block. Is there anything else that can be done? -MPGuy2824 (talk) 11:07, 23 January 2022 (UTC)
I have written explanations on edit summary as well, but it's been of no use. I wonder if something more can be done. I have about 10 such IPs with similar edits, quite obvious they all belong to one user who is putting BJP in place of other parties. This person makes such edits to a few constituency articles, and then some days later does the same to other constituency articles with a different IP.
Could you put this on WP talk page, some other editor may have insight for permanent end to this. I am not sure how to approach admins regarding this as well, since by the time you discover these edits, the user has long stopped using that IP and jumps on a new one and I am not well versed with protocol regarding reporting incidents.

@Itcouldbepossible: I don't think that this falls under the purview of WP:Teahouse. The user can (and has) been warned on their talk page. If there are enough infractions it can be taken to WP:ANI. Also, for articles being draftified, it is usual for a patroller to mark the redirect as reviewed since there is nothing more that can be done at the NPP level for that redirect. @Snyjhon:, I mostly review politician's articles, and you'll agree that RJ Raawat does not pass WP:NPOLITICIAN, since he hasn't won a legislative assembly election. Given that, he has to pass WP:GNG, which is a higher bar to cross. Reviewers with more experience than me take care of those types of articles. If you can find another source like the Dainik Jagran one, that also talks about the subject in depth, then I'm pretty sure that this article will pass review. I've done a bit cleanup and added a few maint tags to the article, which you can take care of. Why are you tagging every article for deletion?

You tagged lots of articles for deletion because they fail notability criteria. Previously all schools and colleges are supposed to be notable. However, recently criteria changes a bit. However, tagging all articles for deletion is ridiculous and also a waste of time. Some other person will again create this article. There are many village articles, then all are supposed to be deleted. At least schools/colleges are educating the next generation; villages are nothing. Try to improve articles by adding citations, and more independent references. In Europe/USA, almost all schools/colleges have significant coverage in newspapers. In India nobody cares about education; newspapers do not cover school/college-related articles. In that sense, almost all Indian educational institutions are not notable. Please try to improve articles rather than tagging everything. Create some articles or improve some articles. Soumitrahazra

In India, temples have significant coverage in newspapers. Temples are notable but not schools as they do not have coverage in newspaper. Even 100-year-old schools does not have any coverage. India will never be a developed country as long as Indians do not change their mentality.... Soumitrahazra

@Soumitrahazra: you are right. The notability criteria for schools have been made much stricter since you created many of these articles. Now schools have to pass WP:GNG. Previously, it was enough to just prove that they exist/existed.
Actually, even temples have to pass the WP:NRELORG criteria for notability.
The problem with many schools is that they aren't sources which would prove that they are notable. They clutter up the maintenance queues of various projects due to this reason.
You say that "some other person will again create these articles": This may be true, but they will not pass New page Review now, if they use the same sources.
On the other hand, villages have just to pass the WP:GEOLAND criteria. I too have wished that Wikipedia editors would have agreed to much stricter WP:GEOLAND criteria.
Also, just to put away your concern, tagging articles for PROD/deletion is far from the only thing that I do on Wikipedia. -MPGuy2824 (talk) 07:40, 2 April 2022 (UTC)

MPGuy2824, WP India AfD consensus is that degree-awarding institutions are assumed notable. That means that prodding the likes of Government College, Kodanchery, while good intentioned, is unproductive. Zindor (talk) 23:32, 6 April 2022 (UTC)

@Zindor: Degrees are awarded by the university that a college is affiliated to (in this case, Calicut University). The individual colleges are not automatically notable, but have to pass WP:NSCHOOL, whose criteria have been made much stricter in 2017. -MPGuy2824 (talk) 02:12, 7 April 2022 (UTC)
I could have phrased it differently but who stamps the certificate is a technicality that rarely alters the AfD outcomes for the project. It has done, i'm sure affiliates have been deleted, but they were basically satellite campuses. I've not been retired that long lol, i'm versed on NSCHOOL, WP:SCHOOLOUTCOMES etc. NSCHOOL is simply too blunt for Indian education institution articles. There is a dearth of available sources about these places, so by towing a hard line we would lose so much valuable content and it would prevent the creation of more valuable content. Wikiproject India has its own consensus and as a senior project it is normal practice to deferr to it. Sure, prods can be a way to get an article improved, but it's Russian roulette. I'm not going to remove the prod, i'm staying retired, but do consider that the information on this website would be enough to sway an AfD in favour of inclusion even though the source is primary. I doubt you'll find any policy or guideline pages on this. It's a consensus that has formed due to AfD discussions, so is documented in those and secondarily in noticeboard discussions. I won't bother supplying links, these discussions are numerous and common.
We can look at the article in question in relation to the consensus. Back in August 2020, when doing NPP, i draftified the Government College, Kodancherry article as i wasn't happy with the article becoming permanent in mainspace with only primary sources supporting it (you probably agree). I felt it was fair game. I was reverted by SD0001 and it entered mainspace permanently. I was already aware of the deletion consensus, so didn't try and remove it from mainspace. Secondary to that i trusted the editor's judgement and there were no promo indications. However, in honesty i was a cheeky b* and i slipped a noindex tag in there to delay the indexing ;) Looking at the article objectively, it's a keeper, i was indiscriminately tarring it with the same brush i would for articles outside the project.
It is apparent that the sympathies that are the basis of the deletion consensus do transpose to NPP. Looking at the semantics, being inclusionist about content we already have is different to being inclusive about arriving content, but to what extent is that important? Who knows, NPR is more of a cabal area...
There are several points to analyse:
  • 1) Does local consensus for a senior wikiproject override project-wide policy such as NSCHOOL?
Yes, it does. It's important because these projects know their subject area and the sensibilities surrounding it. NSCHOOL was confirmed by majority western editors without regard for the Indian situation. It doesn't apply.
  • 2) Is consensus valid if solidified from multiple comparable discussions?
Yes, it's one of the original methods on Wikipedia. However, it's old-fashioned and isn't used anymore because it's much harder to convince people who are unaware of the consensus (hence this discussion). That's one reason centralised policy and guideline pages exist.
  • 3) If the method is old-fashioned, why doesn't NSCHOOLS have this India exception clearly written?
Because we have a working solution. Nobody addresses the elephant in the room and we just get on with it. Two conflicting texts is not a good idea.

Also i retired in response to the WMF seizing yet more control of en-wiki, and the quisling cabal letting them, so there's wider political issues why i refrain from editing. yes, but a lot depends on "What" media. A school mentioned in international media or nation wide media, is almost 100% certain to be notable and have significant coverage in local media. But access to local media is not easy for us, so I assume good faith. If something is borderline, I will prefer keep. So I was suggesting you to delete those that you are sure will not have coverage in Media. Another WP:ATD is to redirect the non notable school that is verified to exist, to the city or corresponding geographical article. The education section can have the name with the ref. New Page Patrol newsletter May 2022

New Page Review queue March 2022

Hello MPGuy2824,

At the time of the last newsletter (No.26, September 2021), the backlog was 'only' just over 6,000 articles. In the past six months, the backlog has reached nearly 16,000, a staggering level not seen in several years. A very small number of users had been doing the vast majority of the reviews. Due to "burn-out", we have recently lost most of this effort. Furthermore, several reviewers have been stripped of the user right for abuse of privilege and the articles they patrolled were put back in the queue.

Several discussions on the state of the process have taken place on the talk page, but there has been no action to make any changes. The project also lacks coordination since the "position" is vacant.

In the last 30 days, only 100 reviewers have made more than 8 patrols and only 50 have averaged one review a day. There are currently 818 New Page Reviewers, but about a third have not had any activity in the past month. All 859 administrators have this permission, but only about a dozen significantly contribute to NPP.

This means we have an active pool of about 450 to address the backlog. We cannot rely on a few to do most of the work as that inevitably leads to burnout. A fairly experienced reviewer can usually do a review in a few minutes. If every active reviewer would patrol just one article per day, the backlog would very quickly disappear.

If you have noticed a user with a good understanding of Wikipedia notability and deletion, do suggest they help the effort by placing {{subst:NPR invite}} on their talk page.

If you are no longer very active on Wikipedia or you no longer wish to be part of the New Page Reviewer user group, please consider asking any admin to remove you from the list. This will enable NPP to have a better overview of its performance and what improvements need to be made to the process and its software.

Mayors do not pass WP:NPOL. But after some searching, I was able to find a source to show that he was a member of the Bagmati Province Assembly. This article now passes WP:NPOL. Draftifications

Hello, MPGuy2824,

Thanks for all of your work on Wikipedia. But I think you should be more judicious with the Draftification tools. I think it would be demoralizing for an editor to return to Wikipedia to do work and find 7 or 8 (or more!) notices on their talk page that their articles have been moved to Draft space.

I understand doing this if you think that there is a danger of the articles being tagged for deletion but, for example, you shouldn't go through an editor's Contributions and draftify all of their recent articles. Don't draftify to make a point but to move promising articles, that could be tagged for deletion, to Draft space where an editor can continue to work and improve them. @Liz: I wasn't going through a particular editor's contributions while draftifying. Actually it was while going through SDZeroBot's NPP Sorting pages, where those articles were close together, and had the same problems. I do take your point of it being demoralizing to an editor. Hello MPGuy2824,

Backlog status

At the time of the last newsletter (No.27, May 2022), the backlog was approaching 16,000, having shot up rapidly from 6,000 over the prior two months. The attention the newsletter brought to the backlog sparked a flurry of activity. There was new discussion on process improvements, efforts to invite new editors to participate in NPP increased and more editors requested the NPP user right so they could help, and most importantly, the number of reviews picked up and the backlog decreased, dipping below 14,000[a] at the end of May.

Since then, the news has not been so good. The backlog is basically flat, hovering around 14,200. I wish I could report the number of reviews done and the number of new articles added to the queue. But the available statistics we have are woefully inadequate. The only real number we have is the net queue size.[b]

In the last 30 days, the top 100 reviewers have all made more than 16 patrols (up from 8 last month), and about 70 have averaged one review a day (up from 50 last month).

While there are more people doing more reviews, many of the ~730 with the NPP right are doing little. Most of the reviews are being done by the top 50 or 100 reviewers. They need your help. We appreciate every review done, but please aim to do one a day (on average, or 30 a month).

TIP – New school articles

Many new articles on schools are being created by new users in developing and/or non-English-speaking countries. The authors are probably not even aware of Wikipedia's projects and policy pages. WP:WPSCH/AG has some excellent advice and resources specifically written for these users. Reviewers could consider providing such first-time article creators with a link to it while also mentioning that not all schools pass the GNG and that elementary schools are almost certainly not notable.

There has been significant discussion at WP:VPP recently on NPP-related matters (Draftification, Deletion, Notability, Verifiability, Burden). Proposals that would somewhat ease the burden on NPP aren't gaining much traction, although there are suggestions that the role of NPP be fundamentally changed to focus only on major CSD-type issues.

NPP awards

One thought - the awards pages does not say the barnstars are for reviewing articles only. Since dozens of redirects can be reviewed in the time it takes to review one article - I assume that they are meant for articles only; note that there is a separate barnstar for redirect reviews. You may want to clarify that. I have asked that the reviewer activity report be updated to show redirect reviews separately, but don't know when that will happen. Thank's for your help. I think for the 4-year backlog we should award barnstars based on articles only. We can add a weightage for redirects also, for the 2022 awards. For the redirect barnstar (Redirect Ninja), i'll do some quarrying to see the top redirect reviewers and then create a proposal to make the award of that barnstar a bit more objective (e.g. >X redirect reviews). -MPGuy2824 (talk) 02:25, 4 August 2022 (UTC)

Hello MPGuy2824,

Backlog status

After the last newsletter (No.28, June 2022), the backlog declined another 1,000 to 13,000 in the last week of June. Then the July backlog drive began, during which 9,900 articles were reviewed and the backlog fell by 4,500 to just under 8,500 (these numbers illustrate how many new articles regularly flow into the queue). Thanks go to the coordinators Buidhe and Zippybonzo, as well as all the nearly 100 participants. Congratulations to Dr vulpes who led with 880 points. See this page for further details.

Unfortunately, most of the decline happened in the first half of the month, and the backlog has already risen to 9,600. Understandably, it seems many backlog drive participants are taking a break from reviewing and unfortunately, we are not even keeping up with the inflow let alone driving it lower. We need the other 600 reviewers to do more! Please try to do at least one a day.

Coordination
MB and Novem Linguae have taken on some of the coordination tasks. Please let them know if you are interested in helping out. MPGuy2824 will be handling recognition, and will be retroactively awarding the annual barnstars that have not been issued for a few years.
Open letter to the WMF
The Page Curation software needs urgent attention. There are dozens of bug fixes and enhancements that are stalled (listed at Suggested improvements). We have written a letter to be sent to the WMF and we encourage as many patrollers as possible to sign it here. We are also in negotiation with the Board of Trustees to press for assistance. Better software will make the active reviewers we have more productive.
TIP - Reviewing by subject
Reviewers who prefer to patrol new pages by their most familiar subjects can do so from the regularly updated sorted topic list.
New reviewers
The NPP School is being underused. The learning curve for NPP is quite steep, but a detailed and easy-to-read tutorial exists, and the Curation Tool's many features are fully described and illustrated on the updated page here.
