Welcome

Hi, MacMed. This is NOT some automated message...it's from a real person. You can talk to me right now. Welcome to Wikipedia! I noticed you've just joined, and wanted to give you a few tips to get you started. If you have any questions, please talk to us. The tips below should help you to get started. Best of luck!  Chzz  ►  23:38, 12 May 2009 (UTC)

ようこそ
  • You don't need to read anything - anybody can edit; just go to an article and edit it. Be Bold, but please don't put silly stuff in - it will be removed very quickly, and will annoy people.
  • Ask for help. Talk to us live, or edit this page, put {{helpme}} and describe what help you need. Someone will reply very quickly - usually within a few minutes.
  • Edit existing articles, before you make your own. Look at some subjects that you know about, and see if you can make them a bit better. For example, Wikipedia:Cleanup#2009.
  • When you're ready, read about Your first article. It should be about something well-known, and it will need references.

Good luck with editing; please drop me a line some time on my own talk page.

There's lots of information below. Once again, welcome to the fantastic world of Wikipedia!

Hi! I am glad to hear that you are interested in helping with this portal. I have stumbled through to update it myself a couple of times but it could really use some simplification of the procedures. The user who seems most familiar with it is User:SriMesh. I might also recommend User:Roux as a user who is helpful and knowledgeable in these sort of areas.

Best of luck! DoubleBlue (talk) 22:16, 15 May 2009 (UTC)

Hello there. I would love to help you out. Have puttered with some other portals, and have done a little on the current events one for Canada. I am glad you have an interest in this area. I will write up a little blurb in my sand box and let you know when it is done.SriMesh | talk 00:54, 16 May 2009 (UTC)

Hello there again.... Does this help? Talk to me again if you have any questions at all. Thank you so much for your interest!!SriMesh | talk 01:56, 16 May 2009 (UTC)
I see you have just joined wikipedia, if you just want to bounce thoughts - news ideas to my talk page, then we can collaborate, and I can help more if you wish with the wikicoding.SriMesh | talk 03:07, 16 May 2009 (UTC)
You did very well!!! All I did was add wikilinks to articles mentioned in your story, and added a couple of recent - related news stories from wikinews, so if anyone wants further info they can click on either the WP or WN links. I checked your lead story like they do on Wikinews and it conforms to the references you stated, which means it has to pass a check on copyright newsworthiness verifiability Neutral point of View and style which your backgrounder article did correspond to!!!! That is awesome. Carry on with the portal and/or feel free to join up to wikinews as well!SriMesh | talk 01:14, 17 May 2009 (UTC)
The one thing to change still is the image. If you click on the image File:GM Canada.svg you will see it is a copyrighted image which wikipedia can put online according to American Fair use non free content copyright laws... which means you have to read this and add a Non-free use media rationale template to the image's article page for each and every page the image is used on. So.... on an wikipedia article that is not too too bad. On a portal it is not recommended... Alternative for this portal lead story... choose a GM car image... choose a building or a factory or a spokesperson, see this category... Category:General Motors for a whole plethora. Wikinews usually picks a car or if the prime minister, provincial minister are mentioned then their profile. I will let you pick one...A robot will come along shortly and remove it anyway as the copyrighted image does not state Non-free use media rationale SriMesh | talk 01:31, 17 May 2009 (UTC)
I added your lead to the lead story|archives, even though it is not removed yet, that way it will be recorded for posterity. I also add it to the May headlines. Also, in case another lead is written, then the monthly headlines, still can show that it had been a Canadian story and this one was in the lead at one time. Headlines don't have to be leads necessarily.SriMesh | talk 02:01, 17 May 2009 (UTC)

Merging Corner Blitz

Hi MacMed, just an FYI that when you merge an article, you should simply redirect the original page to the destination page, rather than requesting deletion. For copyright reasons we need to keep the original edit history, and such a redirect also helps readers find what they're looking for easier. Thanks! BryanG (talk) 16:21, 18 May 2009 (UTC)

Rollback

I granted the rollback permission to you. Please, remember that it should only be used to revert obvious vandalism or other clearly unproductive edits (see Wikipedia:Rollback for details). Ruslik (talk) 10:16, 19 May 2009 (UTC)

Not done I declined the speedy deletion request on James geddy because it is remarkable. Just because you have never heard of something or someone does not mean it is not significant. CSD criteria A7 is for an article about a real person, an organization (e.g. band, club, company, or web content that does not indicate why its subject is important or significant. This is distinct from verifiability and reliability of sources, and is a lower standard than notability. The article's subject may be non notable, but is not unremarkable. Take it to PROD or Articles For Deletion instead. Thanks, and have a nice day. However, this was a copyright violation, and I have retagged it as such. T3chl0v3r (talk) 22:43, 19 May 2009 (UTC)

Misleading info from Supersentai

I just wanted to inform you that the images provided on this page[1], which Supersentai claims to be merely a website on fashion, are copied images from reliable college-grade books on Chinese clothing. I've taken a scan from a tertiary Korean text heavily based on what Korean scholars consider to be the most reliable Chinese sources for verification.[2] Cydevil38 (talk) 15:35, 24 May 2009 (UTC)

Re: your recent post at Media copyright questions

The problem is the non-commercial restriction. Although Wikipedia is non-commercial, some of our mirrors are not. So Wikipedia highly restricts the use of such non-free (i.e. restricted) content. (See WP:NFCC.) In particular I non-free content cannot be used if it could be replaced by a free equivalent. But somebody could go to the cemetary and take a free photo of the headstone. Sorry. —teb728 t c 23:05, 30 May 2009 (UTC)

Did You Know

I see that you're new to the process. It is considered unfair to add your own hook to the prep area. Too much potential for gaming the system. Someone else needs to do it. So I have removed your hook and placed it back to the suggestions area. It was moved to the prep area way too soon anyhow, the OLDEST articles are the first ones to be removed after issues are resolved. Hooks sit for more than 5 days, usually it sits for 7+ days after creation. Also, the article really should have metric conversions for units, which is most easily done with the convert template ({{convert}}. I noticed that something was up with way too many U.S. hooks. Royalbroil 06:25, 31 May 2009 (UTC)

Hi. I've added a notability tag to this article. The article is certainly well-researched, but I can't see any notability there. The whole thing just boils down to "he was a soldier in WW1". Rwxrwxrwx (talk) 09:48, 31 May 2009 (UTC)

Proposed deletion of Meacham Denyes

A proposed deletion template has been added to the article Meacham Denyes, suggesting that it be deleted according to the proposed deletion process because of the following concern:

Non-notable soldier, nothing in article show anything different to millions of other soldiers who died in the first world war also note WP:NOTMEMORIAL

All contributions are appreciated, but this article may not satisfy Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion, and the deletion notice should explain why (see also "What Wikipedia is not" and Wikipedia's deletion policy). You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{dated prod}} notice, but please explain why you disagree with the proposed deletion in your edit summary or on its talk page.

Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised because, even though removing the deletion notice will prevent deletion through the proposed deletion process, the article may still be deleted if it matches any of the speedy deletion criteria or it can be sent to Articles for Deletion, where it may be deleted if consensus to delete is reached. Replaceable fair use Image:Denyes Headstone.jpg

Replaceable fair use
Replaceable fair use

Thanks for uploading Image:Denyes Headstone.jpg. I noticed the description page specifies that the media is being used under a claim of fair use, but its use in Wikipedia articles fails our first non-free content criterion in that it illustrates a subject for which a freely licensed media could reasonably be found or created that provides substantially the same information. If you believe this media is not replaceable, please:

  1. Go to the media description page and edit it to add {{di-replaceable fair use disputed}}, without deleting the original replaceable fair use template.
  2. On the image discussion page, write the reason why this image is not replaceable at all.

Alternatively, you can also choose to replace this non-free media by finding freely licensed media of the same subject, requesting that the copyright holder release this (or similar) media under a free license, or by taking a picture of it yourself.

If you have uploaded other non-free media, consider checking that you have specified how these images fully satisfy our non-free content criteria. You can find a list of description pages you have edited by clicking on this link. Note that even if you follow steps 1 and 2 above, non-free media which could be replaced by freely licensed alternatives will be deleted 2 days after this notification (7 days if uploaded before 13 July 2006), per our non-free content policy. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. MilborneOne (talk) 11:01, 31 May 2009 (UTC)

Hi MacMed. I wonder if you wouldn't mind please considering withdrawing this deletion nomination. Per my and others' comments, Solis Olguin amply meets any reasonable notability criteria—indeed you might say an article on him is overdue. The tragic farce of the credulous news reports on the circumstances of his death is an unfortunate distraction, those circumstances are not what he is notable for and nor should they be what the article is about. Hopefully we'll correct this imbalance soon and give his article and extensive career the due coverage it deserves; but in the meantime I hope you'll see fit to withdraw the deletion nom soon. Sorry, but I must redecline your request. You've been around less than a month, and you only have 206 edits to actual articles. To be able to accurately judge your experience, you'll need maybe between 700-1000+ article edits. You can view your editcount here (look under Edits by namespace: Article). My advice is to wait a few months and get up to 700 article edits and reapply. --FastLizard4 (TalkIndexSign) 01:54, 8 June 2009 (UTC)

I fixed your template

Hello MacMed, I was able to fix your template, but I needed some help on #wikipedia-en-help, and #mediawiki, and #mediawiki finally was able to make me realize that the name of template that you put on your test page wasn't the template that you made. The template you put on the test page was something like this {{mediationnote1}} or something like that. The correct text for the template is:{{User:MacMed/Mediationnote}} . WPOOK

Hi there, I was just wondering what you meant by "advanced wiki-tools" on the project page? Thanks, MacMedtalkstalk 23:07, 13 June 2009 (UTC)

WP:AWB (for automated batch work), WP:WikEd (a more powerful wiki-edit window), WP:LINKY (preloads pages into tabs for speeding up manual batch work), and Regex (programmable search/replace feature in AWB and m:User:Pathoschild/Scripts/Regex menu framework - the latter is an add-on to Wikipedia's standard edit window). Template substitution tricks (e.g., using nested templates). Google site-specific searches of Wikipedia. And other tricks and techniques. See also WP:OTS. And I encourage all our team members to get a WP:BOT account (2 have them so far). The Transhumanist    21:27, 14 June 2009 (UTC)
I have AWB access, and I also use WikEd. How do I get a bot accoutn without actually having a written bot to propose though? Also, what can I get started on with the tools I do have? Thanks, MacMedtalkstalk 21:58, 14 June 2009 (UTC)
I'm not sure I understand your question. AWB can be activated into a bot, so you don't have to write your own bot program. To get an AWB bot account requires writing a proposal, but that's easy if you know someone who has been through the process. The easiest way is to propose a bot for a standard task. Both Juliancolton and Thehelpfulone will be glad to help. In the meantime...
Ah, good, you use Firefox! I need you to install the WP:LINKY add-on (very easy). WikEd is twice as powerful when using Linky.
I also would like you to boost the power of the regular edit window. Go to "my preferences", click on "Gadgets", and activate the regex menu. You'll only see it when you have WikEd deactivated.
The next step is to enhance your account with some scripts. Go to WP:OTS#Super fast upgrade and follow the insructions there. It includes WikEd, so remove that part of the code from the copy/paste before you save. The Watchlist sorter is the main one we're after here, as it makes your watchlist much easier to use, by displaying results by namespace.
Let me know how this goes.
I'll be sending you your first (WikEd/Linky) task soon.
The Transhumanist    22:28, 14 June 2009 (UTC)
Just wanted to say that I or any other member of the Outline of Knowledge would be willing to help you out if you ever needed assistance. NW (Talk) 23:13, 14 June 2009 (UTC)

First WP:WPOOK task - add main links to subject article see also sections

Copy the contents of Portal:Contents/Outline of knowledge/Technology and applied sciences to User:MacMed/Sandbox01.

Then edit User:MacMed/Sandbox01 with WikEd: search for "[[Outline of" and replace it with "[[".

Also search for "|" and replace it with "#See also|".

Then save. Each link will lead to an outline's corresponding subject article's see also section.

Then use linky to open tabs on all the links on that page. (Hold down the left key on your mouse and highlight the page, then right-click to make the drop-down menu appear, select "Linky", then choose "open selected links in tabs".

To move between tabs use Ctrl-tab and Ctrl-shift-tab. To nuke a tab before moving to the next one, push Ctrl-W. (That's what I usually use - I work on it, then nuke it, instantly going to the next one to work on).

In each tab (on just the see also sections of the articles that have a corresponding outline), add the following code to the top of the see also section but after any leading templates (like the portal box template): {{subst:User:The Transhumanist/Sandbox46}}

Save.

That will place the Template:main, along with the corresponding outline's name. It won't work quite right on the Internet article, so you'll have to fix the outline link afterwards by adding "the" to the link before "Internet". I don't have time today to program a template to do that automatically - maybe next time.  :)

If there's a List of basic x topics link in the see also section, where x is the same subject as the outline, erase it. It's a redundant link.

If the "main" template is already at the top of the see also section but doesn't display the subject's outline, replace it. Place its non-redundant links (if any) in the bullet list of the see also section.

If you have questions, feel free to drop by my talk page any time.

I've also asked a couple of our team members to stop by and check in on you to see how your are doing.

Thank you.

Good luck.

Have fun.

Thanks a lot guys, I'll start in on this tomorrow. MacMedtalkstalk 01:09, 15 June 2009 (UTC)
I forgot... this trick works great on countries, because they're capitalized. Unfortunately, you'll need to go back to all the pages and fix the link. In most cases, the subject name should not be capitalized. For example, it should be Outline of architecture, not Outline of Architecture. Sorry about that. The Transhumanist    01:56, 16 June 2009 (UTC)

First task fixing

In User:MacMed/Sandbox01, this appears:

Computer science (Free software, Information technology, Internet, Programming, Software engineering)

Does that mean that you want all the articles in the brackets to have {{main|Outline of computer science}} or what? Thanks, MacMedtalkstalk 15:04, 18 June 2009 (UTC)
No, it means that portion of the OOK page is in the wrong tree structure format. :) Parenthetical. These outlines used to be just "structured lists".  :)
Thank you for pointing that out.
I've fixed it. (Sort of)
By the way, {{main}} shouldn't be at the top of the outline pages, because the topic link is usually at the very beginning of the lead paragraph. See WP:OVERLINK. (Though it seemed like a good idea at the time).
Keep up the good work!

Outline update - Full Steam Ahead! - 06/18/2009

Several members of the WikiProject have been hard at work.

Buaidh has been building and refining the outlines on the U.S. States, the states' historical outlines, and the Historical outline of the United States. Lately, his edits have dominated the project's watchlist readout. (I think he's overdue for a barnstar or two. hint hint)

Penubag has been working on medals for all the main branches of the OOK, and has completed the OOK WikiProject's animated advert banner (see below).

Highfields has been filling in the currencies for each country on their respective outlines.

NuclearWarfare and Thehelpfulone have been busy with WP:AWB, posting banners and notices, and helping our sister project, the Index WikiProject, get established. Indexes work hand-in-hand with the outlines and are prominently linked to from the top of most of them. And the outlines, which serve as tables of contents, are only as good as the pages they link to.

Since we started integrating (linking) the OOK and its support pages into the encyclopedia and into the Wikipedia community, activity on outlines has been increasing. Though there's still much left to do.

But I digress. There are a couple more...

Welcome to our new members Stefan and MacMed

Stefan is building the Outline of sharks.

MacMed has joined our advanced wiki-tools team, and is currently adding links to outlines in the corresponding subject articles' see also sections.

Welcome to the team!

WPOOK's advert banner has gone live!

Penubag has finished this WikiProject's animated advert banner, and it is now being displayed on the Wikipedia ads template which in turn is displayed on about 2000 user pages. Each time someone access one of those pages, there is a 1 in 184 chance of them viewing this:

If you'd like to display the banner on your userpage locked-on to the ad as above, use the following code:

{{Wikipedia ads|ad=184}}

(By the way, it's been awhile since we've barnstarred Penubag).

Watchers needed!

If you haven't already, please add the entire project's watchlist to your watchlist. Here's how:

From the edit window, copy and paste Wikipedia:WikiProject Outline of knowledge/Watchlist into your raw watchlist.
Or go to Wikipedia:WikiProject Outline of knowledge/Watchlist using Related changes and click on "Related changes" in the toolbox menu in Wikipedia's sidebar on the left hand side of the screen.

Check the watchlist every time you log on!

I forgot to mention this step above.  :)

The OOK is in 5 other Wikipedias?

I can't make heads or tails of 'em, but these links were on Portal:Contents/Outline of knowledge:

Resurrected from the grave yard...

I discovered an AfD discussion on possibly the first article named "Outline of", which was called Outline of Islamic and Muslim related topics, and which was created 4 years ago. Of course they deleted it. But now it has many friends, and so it has risen from the dead.  :)

See the DRV discussion at Wikipedia:Deletion review/Log/2009 June 7#Outline of Islamic and Muslim related topics.

Recruiters needed. Drop me a note if you are interested.

Advice from the mentors

  • Astatine-210, Strdst grl, and Willscrlt - link to the outlines from the corresponding subject articles' see also sections - this is underway by MacMed (non-country outlines) and User talk:NuclearWarfare (counry outlines).
  • Astatine-210 - add a link to the outlines to the disambiguation pages of the corresponding subjects - good idea. Since "Outline" is just the type of page, not the subject, I think these might qualify for inclusion on disambiguation pages. We need someone to look into the relevant guidelines on this.
  • SimonTrew - provide a badge (userbox) for WPOOK members to add to their user pages - Penubag will have one for us soon.
  • Zachary crimsonwolf - create a card explaining outlines, and send it to everyone you know, and make it viral (by including a request for the recipients to send the card to everyone they know) - this task has been split in three:
  1. Creation of a "thank you for your interest" card which introduces (explains) outlines, to send to queriers, new participants to discussions, those who seem to be confused about outlines, etc.
  2. Creation of a thank you card / invitation to the WPOOK, to send to users we see working on outlines, including a request for them to invite others whom they think might be interested
3. Creation of an invitation to Wikignomes, with a brief rundown on the types of tasks there are for them to do on the outlines. The invitation will include a request for them to invite anyone they think would enjoy working on outlines.
  • weebiloobil - add examples to Wikipedia:Outlines - more examples will be added as suitable outlines are completed
  • weebiloobil - add a picture to Wikipedia:Outlines (it doesn't have to be relevant), to provide atmosphere and to break it up visually and add a splash of color - will do, and we'll add a caption to make it relevant, with a link to the outline on that subject. Thank you for the idea.
  • Zachary crimsonwolf - ask Jimbo Wales to bestow the award(s) for the country outlines contest, once you get it going first - we'll give that a try
  • Zachary crimsonwolf - ask everyone in the project to inform their acquaintances around Wikipedia about the OOK - will do, as soon as the cards
  • UzEE - collaborate with all the WikiProjects you share scope with - we've placed a banner on their talk pages, and have placed task notices on some. We'll be posting more tasks, and plan to create a section on contents system development and maintenance for each WikiProject page itself.
  • SriMesh - if you can't get outlines added to next year's WikiCup, then create your own WikiCup-like contest - there's 6 months left to this year to address reservations and work out the details at WikiCup. In the meantime, there's the 200-WikiProject contest, which needs input.

Going a bit overboard on outlines

Some of the outline links you're adding aren't quite appropriate (e.g. for Fundamental theorem of arithmetic, Factorization, and some other math concepts). They're not broad topics suitable for meriting outlines. --Cybercobra (talk) 23:47, 18 June 2009 (UTC)

And just FYI, looks like User:Quaeler is reverting some of your additions on the grounds the articles don't yet exist. --Cybercobra (talk) 00:03, 19 June 2009 (UTC)

The task is to add it only to the subjects directly corresponding to the existing outlines. That is, to the subject presented in each outline's title. So Outline of Geography gets a link added to the see also section of the Geography article.
I'm sorry that I didn't make that more clear.

Task #2

After you are done fixing the links from the previous task, here's another task for you.

Upon seeing the problem with the template I created (Sandbox46 above), I requested help at Wikipedia:Village pump (technical)/Archive62#How do you use a variable to insert a page's name uncapitalized?, and the result was:

{{subst:User:The Transhumanist/Sandbox47}}

Using the line above, repeat the previous task for the sections that haven't been done yet at the OOK. The Geography and places section is being taken care of, so you can skip that.

For the historical outlines of the U.S. states (in the History and events section), in each of the "History of" articles' see also sections, paste in {{main|Historical outline of }}, and add the state's name (capitalized) after "of".

Some of the articles have already been done (besides the geography ones), so be careful not to insert the main link a second time on those.

Thank you.

Good luck.

Have fun.

Sandbox47 isn't working right. Don't use it! I'll let you know when it is fixed. The Transhumanist    18:16, 22 June 2009 (UTC)
