Social group categories for KPK, Baluchistan and Gilgit-Baltistan

I would suggest social groups as opposed to ethnic groups. For example, the KPK is home to groups like the nomadic Gujjars in Swat, Dir and Chitral, who are more a distinct social group then ethnic group. I hope to set up categories for KPK, Gilgit Baltistan and Baluchistan soon, but am a bit busy right now. We also need more articles on various communities, but unlike India where there is an excellent People of India series which covers every state and territory, there is nothing like in Pakistan. The only sources early 20th Century British gazetteers, many of which are out of date. --WALTHAM2 (talk) 10:50, 11 April 2012 (UTC)

Thanks for your reply! Your suggestion is fair, we'll go with the Social groups category then. Let me know if you do start, I'll surely be able to chime in and lend a helping hand. Cheers, Mar4d (talk) 10:53, 11 April 2012 (UTC)

I have already started with Category:Social groups of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. Hopefully, will put in categories for both Gilgit Baltistan and Baluchistan soon. Just looking at the entries, some probably need to be re-written, and when I get a chance I will look into it as well.

--WALTHAM2 (talk) 18:11, 11 April 2012 (UTC)

Great, thanks. I'll get on board with that. I've started Category:Social groups of Balochistan, Pakistan so whenever you get to the Balochistan articles just sort them into that category. Cheers, Mar4d (talk) 07:20, 12 April 2012 (UTC)

Formal mediation has been requested

The Mediation Committee has received a request for formal mediation of the dispute relating to "India, Afghanistan and Pakistan". As an editor concerned in this dispute, you are invited to participate in the mediation. Mediation is a voluntary process which resolves a dispute over article content by facilitation, consensus-building, and compromise among the involved editors. After reviewing the request page, the formal mediation policy, and the guide to formal mediation, please indicate in the "party agreement" section whether you agree to participate. Because requests must be responded to by the Mediation Committee within seven days, please respond to the request by 19 April 2012.

Discussion relating to the mediation request is welcome at the case talk page. Thank you.

Pāṇini

Hello! Is there any relation of Pāṇini to Wikiproject Pakistan or Pakistan related categories like Category:Pre-Islamic heritage of Pakistan and Category:People from Peshawar? --SMS Talk 13:41, 14 April 2012 (UTC)

Well, since he was from Pushkalavati, 4th century BC (which is modern-day Peshawar), the correct working assumption is that yes, both Category:Pre-Islamic heritage of Pakistan and Category:People from Peshawar are relevant in the article. But why do you ask, has someone challenged the inclusion of these categories? Mar4d (talk) 13:46, 14 April 2012 (UTC)
Oh Ok! I didn't know about Pushkalavati's history and neither did I do a detail check that how he is related to Pakistan. No nobody challenged, it was just me. Thanks for the info. --SMS Talk 14:22, 14 April 2012 (UTC)
Oh, right. There was a recent debate at WP:PAK regarding adding Pakistan history categories to pre-1947 articles, so I thought someone might've started that argument again. Good work with the assessments by the way. Cheers, Mar4d (talk) 14:24, 14 April 2012 (UTC)
Thanks. Expecting to see you more active at the assessment drive. --SMS Talk 14:31, 14 April 2012 (UTC)

Hi, can you keep a check on the threads for the copy edit where help is needed. I might not be aware of all the content background checks as some was added by you guys. --lTopGunl (talk) 10:30, 15 April 2012 (UTC)

Hmm, a lot of the content is on history, which to be honest, I did not work on much either. But I'll try to take a thorough look and see where and how I can help. Mar4d (talk) 10:34, 15 April 2012 (UTC)

Thanks for your invitation

Thanks for the invitation to Wikipedia:WikiProject Pakistan. I don't think I will be able to devote an awful lot of time to it, but would be happy to participate in whatever way I can. - Ahmerkhan (talk) 11:09, 5 April 2012 (UTC)

No worries. Hope to see you around. Happy editing! Mar4d (talk) 12:41, 5 April 2012 (UTC)
Like what you've done with the template. --lTopGunl (talk) 13:37, 6 April 2012 (UTC)
Yea, I thought about making the template more appealing. I originally added the Wiki-Pakistan logo but the white background kind of makes the template look ugly, so I've replaced with the flag of Pakistan now if you noticed. I'll probably ask someone to get rid of the white background on the logo, then it'll look appropriate. Mar4d (talk) 13:46, 6 April 2012 (UTC)
Yeah, I went through the template's edit-history. Btw, why is it not in the template namespace? A border line would do too... try light green background instead of brown when you have time. --lTopGunl (talk) 13:52, 6 April 2012 (UTC)
I've updated Wikipedia:WikiProject Pakistan/Outreach/Welcome a bit too. --lTopGunl (talk) 14:06, 6 April 2012 (UTC)
Right. Thanks for the suggestions. Will take them into account and see what I can do. Mar4d (talk) 14:13, 6 April 2012 (UTC)
Not really, I think they both kind of serve their own purpose. We could update the invitation template though, if you feel that it does not contain enough information. Maybe we could sort of introduce a set of "links for Wikipedians interested in Pakistan" in it (see this; by the way, they also have a seperate template for invitation and another one for welcoming). Mar4d (talk) 00:53, 15 April 2012 (UTC)
Actually on second thoughts, I think it's not a bad idea. The second one is sort of redundant since we hardly use it. But what format do you exactly propose for the new template once they're merged? I just mentioned above that we could introduce a set of "quick links." It just sprung to my mind that we can maybe create a quick links template (similiar to this one) and include it in collapsed form in the outreach template. Mar4d (talk) 00:56, 15 April 2012 (UTC)
We actually never post the welcome after we've invited and it can be actually hard to find the users who you invited and see if they have joined. I was thinking of having the same welcome and invitation template. The format of this template is good, we can put the invitation one inside it on the top and remove any redundant sentences. It will be a single drive by user welcome kind of template then (having invitation and the links) which you drop right after you drop a welcome note. Does that make sense? --lTopGunl (talk) 07:49, 15 April 2012 (UTC)
Okay, so what you're saying is that in the new format, we should have the invitation box on the top followed by a "quick links" navigation template below it. And that the invitation box should be updated. Is that correct? Mar4d (talk) 09:16, 15 April 2012 (UTC)

Yes, so that the "welcome to project" template and "invitation template" become a welcoming template together like the wikipedia welcome template. --lTopGunl (talk) 09:42, 15 April 2012 (UTC)

Okay, give me some time and we'll see what we can do with this... Mar4d (talk) 10:35, 15 April 2012 (UTC)
Check out: Wikipedia:WikiProject Pakistan/Outreach/Welcome. Feel free to make any changes. --lTopGunl (talk) 13:20, 15 April 2012 (UTC)
Looks good. Mar4d (talk) 10:26, 16 April 2012 (UTC)
How about modify "If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to ask another fellow member" to "If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to ask me or at the WikiProject Pakistan noticeboard"? The noticeboard is usually the perfect avenue to ask a question or queries.. Mar4d (talk) 10:34, 16 April 2012 (UTC)
Yeah go ahead with that and any other modifications you like, we can then redirect the invitation here and update the outreach page. --lTopGunl (talk) 12:18, 16 April 2012 (UTC)

Request for mediation accepted

The request for formal mediation of the dispute concerning India, Afghanistan and Pakistan, in which you were listed as a party, has been accepted by the Mediation Committee. The case will be assigned to an active mediator within two weeks, and mediation proceedings should begin shortly thereafter. Proceedings will begin at the case information page, Wikipedia:Requests for mediation/India, Afghanistan and Pakistan, so please add this to your watchlist. Formal mediation is governed by the Mediation Committee and its Policy. The Policy, and especially the first two sections of the "Mediation" section, should be read if you have never participated in formal mediation. For a short guide to accepted cases, see the "Accepted requests" section of the Guide to formal mediation. You may also want to familiarise yourself with the internal Procedures of the Committee.

As mediation proceedings begin, be aware that formal mediation can only be successful if every participant approaches discussion in a professional and civil way, and is completely prepared to compromise. Please contact the Committee if anything is unclear.

No, it is just a pejorative term like many others used for different countries [insert example here] and is not widely used as can be seen from zero reliable sources present. Mar4d (talk) 02:58, 21 April 2012 (UTC)

Edit war at Template:Pashtuns

There appears to be a pretty lame edit war in progress at Template:Pashtuns, over whether to use a picture of a girl or some script. It's mostly IPs, plus a couple of registered editors, with both sides appearing to claim consensus for their version. I've semi-protected it to stop the range of IPs, and I'm now asking the registered editors not to revert each other any further. If there is a clear consensus somewhere for either version, can someone please show us where it is so it can be judged? And if not, can someone please start a discussion on the Talk page to try to achieve one? -- Boing! said Zebedee (talk) 12:02, 5 May 2012 (UTC)

Hi there. As far as I know, the image in question (over which the slow edit war has been occuring) has been present on that template since three years. It was added sometime in May 2009 and stayed there ever since. No one's had any major objections from what I see. Looking at the template history, whoever removes it doesn't provide an adequate reason and usually gets reverted. The IP who is replacing the image has not reached consensus or given a valid rationale thus that is why I got involved and re-inserted the image. I think it would be good to restore the template to its original form and a note should be left on the IP's talk page as to why they do not want that image up there. Mar4d (talk) 12:09, 5 May 2012 (UTC)
OK, thanks. I've had a closer look at the history too, and it does look like the version with that image has been stable for some time. If there's no consensus to change it, then I agree it should stay as it was. But as it has been going on so long, I think it's probably better to discuss it on the Talk page and at least establish whether that is the case. User:Darkness Shines says he'll start a discussion there later. I'd prefer to leave it as it is for now (protecting it at the "wrong version" while discussion takes place is harmless), and then see how the consensus goes. -- Boing! said Zebedee (talk) 14:11, 5 May 2012 (UTC)

POW of 1971 war

Just for info as I have met some families who were among the (approx) 90,000 POW; there were women and children (West Pakistani) among them and were kept in Indian jail camps from 1971-1974 in extremely poor state. There were also men (West Pakistani) other than that of Armed forces, who were serving in East Pakistan as part of the civil administration. --SMS Talk 09:37, 7 May 2012 (UTC)

Right. The reason I reverted was that the editor who inserted it seemed to have a POV-pushing agenda, as seen by their edits across various articles and comments on talk pages. Perhaps you could re-introduce it more neutrally. Also, this user claimed that there were "15,000 women" but the source says 15,000 civilians, which includes men, women and children in total. Mar4d (talk) 12:24, 7 May 2012 (UTC)
You are right the statement was not consistent with the source. I once tried to look for the exact number of women and children among POW but its sad that most of the authors who wrote about 1971 war either don't mention and some who do mention mostly disagree on numbers. --SMS Talk 13:14, 7 May 2012 (UTC)

Conquest

The guy is planting Pakistani flag over any article he passes, blanking provincial flags and ransacking faster than one can send him warnings... do you think he's a genuine newbie? Because this Jhirk guy (referring to his first edit) appeared on Jinnah article too replacing place of birth to Jhirk as a fact,, don't think that alone is enough evidence for an SPI though. --lTopGunl (talk) 02:15, 20 May 2012 (UTC)

Can't comment on whether he's related to Shaheerahm on Jinnah article (although the username is certainly similar) but his edits at the moment and unnecessary tampering with flagicons is certainly quite disruptive. He also seems to not have payed much attention to the bunch of warnings left on his userpage, so I can't unfortunately assume much WP:AGF here even if he's a newbie. I think you should report him. It's for his own benefit. Mar4d (talk) 02:49, 20 May 2012 (UTC)
Right, didn't disrupt after the final warning... but will report at AIV if he does. --lTopGunl (talk) 03:06, 20 May 2012 (UTC)
  • By the way, what do you say about creating a shortcut redirect (say about three or four letters) for the template Wikipedia:WikiProject Pakistan/Outreach/Welcome? Yeah, sure... I copy paste it too from this page which I've set to appear on my left side bar under the Wiki's logo. How about WP:WPAK? --lTopGunl (talk) 03:06, 20 May 2012 (UTC)

(edit conflict)Yes that would do too, I'm fine with both. I was trying to add the template to twikle's custom template options, but couldn't get any success. Check out if you can get any luck including it in your twinkle preferences. That would be best (because the template has to be substituted, it will still be long to type). --lTopGunl (talk) 03:17, 20 May 2012 (UTC)
Try the help desk... I think we both missed something about the syntax. I'm off to sleep. --lTopGunl (talk) 03:43, 20 May 2012 (UTC)
(edit conflict) Errr.... I tried to play around with my Twinkle preferences panel but can't get any luck. But hey, I've noticed one thing. In your Twinkle welcome user option, there's a drop down menu on the top of the box ("type of welcome"). Select WikiProject Welcomes and you'll see templates for a whole lot of different WikiProjects. The ones I tested below are for Australia, India and Estonia. I'm wondering if this is built-in, and if so, how can we get one for WP:PAK up there? Mar4d (talk) 03:47, 20 May 2012 (UTC)

Yes, I tired to but can't seem to get the custom template in there.. does it have to be in your userspace or something? I'll ask at help desk. Yeah, I noticed the Wikiprojects too. I guess we'll have to ask for both at the help desk since I couldn't find a way to get it listed there. --lTopGunl (talk) 11:36, 20 May 2012 (UTC)

Right. We should be able to find some assistance at help desk. And it's a good idea to add an option for the WP:PAK WikiProject template on Twinkle, so worth asking about that there too.. Mar4d (talk) 12:01, 20 May 2012 (UTC)

Your contributed article, Pro-Pakistan sentiment in Kashmir

If this is the first article that you have created, you may want to read the guide to writing your first article.

You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.

Hello, I noticed that you recently created a new page, Pro-Pakistan sentiment in Kashmir. First, thank you for your contribution; Wikipedia relies solely on the efforts of volunteers such as you. Unfortunately, the page you created covers a topic on which we already have a page - Pro-Pakistan sentiment. Because of the duplication, your article has been tagged for speedy deletion. Please note that this is not a comment on you personally and we hope you will continue helping to improve Wikipedia. If the topic of the article you created is one that interests you, then perhaps you would like to help out at Pro-Pakistan sentiment - you might like to discuss new information at the article's talk page.

If you think that the article you created should remain separate, contest the nomination by clicking on the button labelled "Click here to contest this speedy deletion" in the speedy deletion tag. Doing so will take you to the talk page where you can explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. You can also visit the page's talk page directly to give your reasons, but be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be removed without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but do not hesitate to add information that is consistent with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. If the page is deleted, you can contact one of these administrators to request that the administrator userfy the page or email a copy to you. Additionally if you would like to have someone review articles you create before they go live so they are not nominated for deletion shortly after you post them, allow me to suggest the article creation process and using our search feature to find related information we already have in the encyclopedia. Try not to be discouraged. Wikipedia looks forward to your future contributions. Darkness Shines (talk) 15:18, 29 May 2012 (UTC)

J&K freedom movement template

How about naming it Kashmir separatist movement? --SMS Talk 15:10, 29 May 2012 (UTC)

Or Template:Kashmiri nationalism would suit better since this is basically a nationalism template. What d'you think? Mar4d (talk) 15:30, 29 May 2012 (UTC)
I'm fine with both, just to let you know. Mar4d (talk) 15:49, 29 May 2012 (UTC)
Both are good with me too. Btw I was adding counter POV to what was already present and some other content in Pro-Pakistan sentiment in Kashmir when it appeared that the do you want to create this article that was deleted .... You may ask JBW to restore it to userspace if you want to work on it. --SMS Talk 17:54, 29 May 2012 (UTC)
But I am more tempted to move it to "Kashmir separatist movement". --SMS Talk 16:32, 30 May 2012 (UTC)
That's good to go. Do you want to move it now, or wait until the result of the AfD becomes clear? Mar4d (talk) 16:42, 30 May 2012 (UTC)
I think its better to move now and leave a comment at TfD but wait I just saw Regents Park's suggestion, whats your take on "Kashmir conflict". --SMS Talk 17:12, 30 May 2012 (UTC)
Not quite... since the template is mainly about seperatist/seccessionist movements and seperatism, renaming to Kashmir conflict would not be an apt title or accurately define its scope. That's my opinion, ofcourse. Mar4d (talk) 17:29, 30 May 2012 (UTC)

Ok then I think we are good to go, meanwhile I may also create Template:Kashmir conflict. --SMS Talk 17:34, 30 May 2012 (UTC)

Sure thing, I'll be around to help if required. Mar4d (talk) 17:36, 30 May 2012 (UTC)
Certainly your help is required here. --SMS Talk 17:58, 30 May 2012 (UTC)
Done with the title change, please revert/correct if you find some error there. --SMS Talk 20:21, 30 May 2012 (UTC)
  • Though I don't have any serious issue but I think Kashmir conflict may serve as a better title. What do you say? --SMS Talk 16:26, 1 June 2012 (UTC)

Thankx

Thankx for corrcting my edit my browser is not good --Highstakes00 (talk) 12:31, 2 June 2012 (UTC)

No worries. And thanks for relisting that RfC :) Mar4d (talk) 12:34, 2 June 2012 (UTC)

that last revert put you on 4 r, self revert now. Darkness Shines (talk) 16:44, 3 June 2012 (UTC)

Are we ok then with the changes we accomplished today? JCAla (talk) 19:23, 3 June 2012 (UTC)

I have replied on Salvio's talk page in response to your thread on TopGun. There are several issues that still remain in the article. Irrelevant content needs to be removed - that includes WP:SYNTHESIS paragraphs on Gulbuddin Hekmatyar who has nothing to do with the Balochistan conflict. Furthermore, all sources show that the alleged support of Hekmatyar and other Islamic groups in Afghanistan was a response to Afghan support of Baloch and Pashtun seperatists. The version you edited implies as if Afghan support to Baloch rebels only came after Pakistani (alleged) support to Islamic groups. That is incorrect, rather it is the other way around. Potwari people

Do you know whether the Potwari-speaking people (see Potwari language) of Azad Kashmir and northern Punjab (Pakistan) are classified as a seperate ethnic group? Should there be an article on Potwari people or are they generally considered Punjabis? Just noticed this while looking at Potwari and saw the red link on Pothohari people.... Mar4d (talk) 01:39, 1 June 2012 (UTC)

Very good point. I think there should be seperate article, ( for example there is a seperate Seraki people stub), but to get hold of good sources will be difficult. Infact, of hand I know of none. There was an editor called Pahari Sahib who did some work on Pothohari related articles, it might be worth contacting him. On the Azad Kashmir and Punjab point, I think that the dialects of Azad Kashmir and Pothohar are pretty similar, for example both say kare san, but in AK they prefer to call it Pahari language. Grierson who published the Linguistic Survey of India called the language Lahnda. Sorry can't be more helpful. I am taking a bit of break, but if you require any input please fill free to contact me.

I have raised concerns over your misuse of twinkle jere Darkness Shines (talk) 15:38, 6 June 2012 (UTC)

  • Ignore the above, Dennis seems to be of the opinion I should raise the issue with you first. So might I ask why you reverted a good faith edit as vandalism? Darkness Shines (talk) 15:55, 6 June 2012 (UTC)
Per the same reason IRWolfie- explained to you, Pakistan-occupied is a POV term and does not comply with WP:NPOV. Also, the IP messed up the wikilink. Mar4d (talk) 15:57, 6 June 2012 (UTC)
I do not have a clue what you are talking about re IRWolfie, when did he say that to me? But that is beside the Point, the edit was clearly not vandalisim, so why mark it as such? Darkness Shines (talk) 16:03, 6 June 2012 (UTC)
Well, you obviously didn't read his comment on the ANI thread. The edit was vandalism, blatantly violating WP:NPOV. Mar4d (talk) 16:05, 6 June 2012 (UTC)
Nope, got a link? So you still insist this was vandalism? Darkness Shines (talk),
There. Mar4d (talk) 16:10, 6 June 2012 (UTC)

Welcome to Wikipedia. Although everyone is welcome to contribute constructively to the encyclopedia, we would like to remind you not to attack other editors, as you did on Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Tarana-e-Milli. Please comment on the content and not the contributors. Take a look at the welcome page to learn more about contributing to this encyclopedia. You are welcome to rephrase your comment as a civil criticism of the article. Thank you. Strike off your lame comment DℬigXray 20:06, 9 June 2012 (UTC)

Continuing mediation

Both Darkness Shines and JCAla have indicated that they are willing to cease disputes elsewhere. I trust that you also agree with this. I've asked the following question: "Would participants be willing to agree on specific examples of text within articles that we could take a look at with reference to the identified issues?" Warning on SE

Hi there! I saw your warning on SE's tp. Well, please do not template the regulars. I agree that what SE wrote can't be considered proper but your warning also can't be justified. We are here to develope the encyclopedia not to fight. It is better if this is discontinued by both the sides now. I'd like to offer an apology on behalf of him and lets stop this now. Cheers! →TSU tp* 06:54, 15 June 2012 (UTC)

(edit conflict)Just an observation, templating is not supposed to be a provocation. See WP:TTR which presents equal opposite reasons for templating the regulars when it is really needed. Thanks for refactoring the personal comments though. Cheers. --lTopGunl (talk) 12:50, 15 June 2012 (UTC)
You should have followed the same before preaching me.....about personal attacks. ϮheჂtriԞeΣagle Sorties 12:47, 15 June 2012 (UTC)
Actually the first person to keep that mind is the one making that edit (the edits you make are your responsibility)... not the one who received it or moved the content. --lTopGunl (talk) 12:50, 15 June 2012 (UTC)
One of the 1300 most active Wikipedians ignores the mistake...forgets to warn the user not to do the mistake again and even displays the same in their user(or) talk page...that's fine..I completely agree with you [sarcasm] ϮheჂtriԞeΣagle Sorties 12:55, 15 June 2012 (UTC)
Do you mean to justify your actions in light of others'? Or to make a right with two wrongs, or tit for tat? The user making that edit is already banned. You're not; so take the responsibility of your own editing and stop making WP:POINTy edits. --lTopGunl (talk) 13:39, 15 June 2012 (UTC)
no...I didn't mean to justify my edit.Maybe my mention of names was wrong...but I found it particularly surprising(and shocking that Mar4d didn't template the user who did the same mistake as done by me.Morever, mentioning DS's name in the star was later removed by TSU...not Mar4d.This probably means only one thing.... one:he ignores it..or two:he agrees to it...lets think option one is correct for now.. Vandalism

Is there a reason you called this vandalism?[12] WP:VANDAL is very specific on what is called vandalism and what isn't. Calling good faith vandalism is itself disruptive. Dennis Brown - © 20:43, 21 June 2012 (UTC)

I was on my phone, so I might have utilised the vandalism button while using the revert option. WP:AGF, thank you. Mar4d (talk) 01:38, 22 June 2012 (UTC)
