New Page Reviewer newsletter June 2020

Hello Matthew hk,

Your help can make a difference

NPP Sorting can be a great way to find pages needing new page patrolling that match your strengths and interests. Using ORES, it divides articles into topics such as Literature or Chemistry and on Geography. Take a look and see if you can find time to patrol a couple pages a day. With over 10,000 pages in the queue, the highest it's been since ACPERM, your help could really make a difference.

Google Adds New Languages to Google Translate

In late February, Google added 5 new languages to Google Translate: Kinyarwanda, Odia (Oriya), Tatar, Turkmen and Uyghur. This expands our ability to find and evaluate sources in those languages.

Discussions and Resources
  • A discussion on handling new article creation by paid editors is ongoing at the Village Pump.
  • Also at the Village Pump is a discussion about limiting participation at Articles for Deletion discussion.
  • A proposed new speedy deletion criteria for certain kinds of redirects ended with no consensus.
  • Also ending with no change was a proposal to change how we handle certain kinds of vector images.

Primary topic for Radisson Hotels?

Hi Matthew, I noticed that you've edited Radisson Hotels, and wanted to ask your opinion as to the primacy of the name. I improved content on the early history of the hotel in Minneapolis, and was struck by the degree to which newspaper hits for "Radisson" are almost entirely about the hotel, with close to a million hits, easily 99% being for the hotel. I am thinking of proposing either to move "Radisson Hotels" to "Radisson" (the chain is occasionally referred to without using the word "Hotels"), or to move the Radisson disambiguation page to a disambiguated title, and redirect the title to "Radisson Hotels". What do you think is the best option? BD2412 T 21:33, 23 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

I think you need to start a discussion for this. Personally i would say Radisson Hotels the hotel chain should be the primary topic. Radisson Hotel Group the parent company has many former official name and common name (and own brand that not named after Radisson). While Radisson Blu, Radisson Red, Radisson Collection should not have an article at all as they are subbrand of Radisson hotel chain. Matthew hk (talk) 08:05, 24 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

New Page Patrol December Newsletter

Hello Matthew hk,

A chart of the 2020 New Page Patrol Queue

Year in review

It has been a productive year for New Page Patrol as we've roughly cut the size of the New Page Patrol queue in half this year. We have been fortunate to have a lot of great work done by Rosguill who was the reviewer of the most pages and redirects this past year. Thanks and credit go to JTtheOG and Onel5969 who join Rosguill in repeating in the top 10 from last year. Thanks to John B123, Hughesdarren, and Mccapra who all got the NPR permission this year and joined the top 10. Also new to the top ten is DannyS712 bot III, programmed by DannyS712 which has helped to dramatically reduce the number of redirects that have needed human patrolling by patrolling certain types of redirects (e.g. for differences in accents) and by also patrolling editors who are on on the redirect whitelist.

Reviewer of the Year

John B123 has been named reviewer of the year for 2020. John has held the permission for just over 6 months and in that time has helped cut into the queue by reviewing more than 18,000 articles. His talk page shows his efforts to communicate with users, upholding NPP's goal of nurturing new users and quality over quantity.

NPP Technical Achievement Award

As a special recognition and thank you DannyS712 has been awarded the first NPP Technical Achievement Award. His work programming the bot has helped us patrol redirects tremendously - more than 60,000 redirects this past year. This has been a large contribution to New Page Patrol and definitely is worthy of recognition.

Correct and incorrect ways to address undisclosed paid editing

Matthew hk, Thank you for your efforts to improve the shipping company articles. I'm concerned that you are repeatedly accusing @CartleR255: of being an undisclosed paid edtor at the Talk:COSCO discussion though. I assume your concerns are well founded and based on clear evidence and you were not familiar with the next steps in the process. Please review WP:PAID and follow the reporting process as described there. (Since good faith reporting can be close to WP:OUTING, the e-mail address is a good option.)

Now that the path forward is clarified, please refrain from any further insinuations about other editors are being paid either below, on that talk page, or elsewhere. Even if it wasn't your intent, your current approach could be perceived as WP:HOUNDING. - RevelationDirect (talk) 00:20, 19 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Don't worry, once i collect enough info i will submit either COIN or SPI. It is very very fishy that the user was renamed, for so long not interested in shipping, suddenly create a shipping article in 2016, but inactive in this editing field again and no more improvement for his one and only shipping article created (2016- November 2020), and then sudden decided to knock off the article COSCO in 2020 by merge discussion and China Shipping Group by bold merge. All these moves seem want to channel google hit and pageview of the latter to the COSCO Shipping as typical sign of upe. Typical non paid editor only leave their pov and that all, not repeat the same merge agenda again and again and persuade other. Matthew hk (talk) 17:24, 19 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]
And forget to mention to nuke the cat also for his hidden agenda, instead of adding Category:China Shipping Group to CSCL Globe. Matthew hk (talk) 19:56, 19 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Make sure you have your facts straight. I have created several shipping articles on Wikipedia. Your accusations are false and unsubstantiated. CartleR255 (talk) 20:00, 19 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]

The response by IP in Burmese are extremely rude (subhuman!, cow! son of a b*****! motherf****! I earned 80 lakhs a month f**** fu**er! Not a be**er like you!). It warrants an immediate block. (Note, I am another IP that voted delete. I am away and editing from another IP address). 32.140.117.130 (talk) 19:57, 20 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Apologies for any misunderstanding

Thank you editing the COSCO articles. I realize you are frustrated with my edits on the COSCO articles. Please accept my apology for any misunderstandings. Hopefully you understand that I am not a paid editor. Also, I am not affiliated with any company. In the future, I will not make bold edits/merges without first discussing in talk pages.

That said, I would like to propose that we turn the page on this conflict and collaborate to improve the COSCO articles. I agree to your rationale to separate the COSCO and China Shipping Group articles from COSCO Shipping. I also agree to rename the article to China COSCO Shipping. Let us share our rationales on the talk pages with the other editors and collaborate to improve the COSCO articles. Thanks. Cartle R255 15:52, 21 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Assuming Good Faith - Templated Level 2 User Warning

Information icon Please remember to assume good faith when dealing with other editors. Specifically, I had concerns about interactions with CartleR255 with these edits 1, 2, 3 & 4 and another editor with this edit A. It can be very frustrating to deal with perceived undisclosed paid editing but it's important to follow the WP:PAID reporting process. Thank you. RevelationDirect (talk) 18:16, 20 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@RevelationDirect:. go send a level 2 to admin Justlettersandnumbers (read User talk:CartleR255 quote: "Nevertheless, it seems extremely likely that you have some connection to the company" ) Matthew hk (talk) 21:48, 20 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Justlettersandnumbers: Both Matthew hk and I share a deep frustration with undisclosed unpaid editors and neither of us thinks that the other is a paid editor.
Past that agreement we're having a little trouble: I'm concerned with MHK's approach in discussions (see the links I flagged above) and MHK may have concerns about my approach on this talk page (see two entries above). If you have time, I'd welcome any feedback on how to constructively proceed with editors with potential COI issues. - RevelationDirect (talk) 22:51, 20 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Based on the post below, looks like opinions are converging. I neutrally cross-linked all the different open proposals to encourage more input. Happy holidays! - RevelationDirect (talk) 19:03, 24 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Dante4786 was investigated for sockpuppetry, had been blocked by admins constantly, and returns to vandalise the pages of FCSB

I also strongly believe the page https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=FCSB&action=history is full of his clones. His only interest is not in CSA Steaua, but in erasing FCSB from Wikipedia. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2A02:2F09:3A17:BD00:64B1:DD03:B5B4:6A0E (talk) 13:46, 17 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

I will give a copy-paste to my response on another admin's talk page (since you obviously don't like to go by the book and report an user the correct way):
1. That's not how you report an user. Read the rules. You have to notify me so I can defend myself.
2. This is not the place to talk about Steaua and Fcsb. Use the talk section on the right articles. And no, there is no "FC Steaua Bucharest". There is "FC FCSB" and "CSA Steaua". These are the official (short) names.
3. You explained your last edit by writing "You are contesting my UEFA source". The thing is, it wasn't YOUR source. I believe that was posted by a different ip. You appear to be a new user. So congrats, you just admited to be the real sockpuppet and thus breaking the rules. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special:Contributions/2A02:2F09:3A17:BD00:5CB6:1A93:9C64:A379 -> the user posting the "source" vs https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special:Contributions/2A02:2F09:3A17:BD00:64B1:DD03:B5B4:6A0E -> you.
4. And just for the record, I edit in good-faith. To prove my point, somebody vandalised the FCSB page on January 16. See here: https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=FCSB&oldid=1000749984. Guess who undid the vandalism? Me. Dante4786 (talk) 22:32, 17 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]
5. I explained my edit, the one which this user is complaining about, like this: "Until there is a final decision, we should avoid direct links to CSA Steaua and FC Fcsb. Leave it at just "Steaua Bucuresti", so everyone is happy. Also, I eliminated one broken link" I tried to be neutral. I went for the middle ground. How is this vandalism?
6. I was banned once (just once!), for something which was more like a misunderstanding. It wasn't ever related to football. I was recently unbanned from those articles. Shame on you for giving missinformation. Dante4786 (talk) 22:32, 17 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]
