Atheism

Hi, Just thought I would link you to this discussion as it covers some of the same ground at issue on the History page (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Talk:Atheism). I've changed the current wording slightly and the reasoning can be found here. Also, the line at the end of the Epicurean section - what purpose does it serve? All the philosophical schools at the time harshly criticised each other! BothHandsBlack (talk) 14:00, 13 June 2012 (UTC)

Disambiguation link notification for June 28

Hi. When you recently edited Stone Pine, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page PRI (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). Such links are almost always unintended, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of "Did you mean..." article titles. Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.

Heterodox

Hi - I've replied to you. I've no problem with the article making it clear many Muslims consider it heterodox. I do have a problem with any articles stating as fact that a religion is heterodox - because that is a subjective term. If you look at the article, I think your reasoning would lead us to call Shia and Sunni Muslims heterodox. I gave the example of the Eastern Orthodox Church considering other Christian faiths to be heterodox, but we aren't going to call them heterodox in their articles of course. Essay

I appreciate your comment on my essay -- more than I can easily express. One of the things that keeps me going is knowing that some people have encountered it and found it useful. It's so easy to become burned out with this place, and one of the reasons is that so much of our work goes unacknowledged, unrecognized, and the thousands -- or more, maybe millions -- of people who read Wikipedia and get something useful from it are entirely invisible to us. All the best, Antandrus (talk) 00:14, 5 July 2012 (UTC)

Well let me reiterate that it was of great help to me. I am not a prolific editor but I have (or had) ambitions to be whenever the available time presented itself: I really believed in the project. Recently I have found myself distracted from working on encyclopaedia content by all the discussion froth - that's in your essay somewhere. And also becoming convinced that the unchallengeable dogma of allowing virtually unfettered IP access is our current biggest threat and thief of time. (There's a 70 year old Welshman heroically using Stiki to revert hundreds of mainly IP vandalism events a day). Anyway I really enjoyed your essay and it gave me renewed vigour. Back to thinking about the reader. But I am serious about some mechanism to have the essay delivered automatically, just considering the mechanism. All the best, Mcewan (talk) 01:17, 5 July 2012 (UTC)

Hello again,

I followed your link, and then misunderstood the meaning, which is self-explanatory to all who read it!

Do you think I have made a fool of myself? Any comment would be welcomed!

Sincerely,

-- Gareth Griffith-Jones (talk) 12:59, 8 July 2012 (UTC)

Hi. No I don't think so - it was just an honest mistake. I feel somewhat responsible for pointing you to the WP:Edit filter background page rather than directly to Special:AbuseLog. The latter is linked to in the formaer, but not until quite a way down. I imagine many editors end up on that page looking for the logs themselves, so it should perhaps be linked more prominently. Good evening McEwan,

I thought that it would amuse you ... and thank you for your additional advice above. I did not see this earlier because I have just been watching the incredible Roger Federer become the world's Number 1 again in four sets, having lost the first to Murray. He was amazing during the third and fourth.

All the best, -- Gareth Griffith-Jones (talk) 19:34, 8 July 2012 (UTC)

Greetings - yes I saw a bit of that too and he's an impressive player. Nice to see Murray being somewhat more gracious after the match too. Mcewan (talk) 19:44, 8 July 2012 (UTC)

Amsterdam

Dear Mr Mcewan, I am of the city of Amsterdam International Affairs. I am changing the wrong list of Sistercities. After two hours you changed it again to the start version.

Thanks Arnold van den Broek International affairs Amsterdam — Preceding unsigned comment added by 145.222.44.4 (talk) 10:32, 19 July 2012 (UTC)

Hello. I reverted the changes because the list of cities did not agree with the article in the Dutch version of Wikipedia ({http://nl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Amsterdam]). And neither does the current version of the English page. So one of them does need to be edited, but I cannot find a reliable source for the towns with which Amsterdam is twinned. Also twinning with Amsterdam was not mentioned in at least some of the articles on the other towns (I didn't check all of them).
If you can find something (perhaps from your own department's website) that verifies which cities should be there I will glady update the list or reinstate your editing. My apologies for the inconvenience to you, but there is a policy of requiring references for facts. Mcewan (talk) 10:54, 19 July 2012 (UTC)
Also, can I respectfully suggest you create an account? Mcewan (talk) 11:01, 19 July 2012 (UTC)

I had a look at the content you removed. It doesn't appear to be nonsense. If I'm wrong, Feel free to revert.--Anderson - What's up? 04:31, 3 September 2012 (UTC)

When you had a look did you make any attempt to verify? I don't think you will find a strategy of backing up data "across an increasingly infinite number of universes simultaneously", and restoring from a "host universe [...] via quantum branching" is technically possible just yet. But if you can find this referenced anywhere, I would be interested. And surprised.
And I still think your final warning to the IP editor who originally spotted this was unjustified. Mcewan (talk) 07:47, 3 September 2012 (UTC)
I agree now it wasn't justified. But spotting that the IP had removed all the page categories without a reason still might have meant the first warning could have been justified.--Anderson - What's up? 06:23, 5 September 2012 (UTC)

Deletion sorting

Hello Mcewan, thanks for helping with delsorting but regarding Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Chatelaine (singer) singers go under Musicians rather then Music. Generally ‎biographical deletion discussions only go under Music if they're for example businesspeople or photographers who work within the music industry. Also Canada (which is a meta-list) has a number sub delsorts see here so Quebec would be more specific in this case, so I've corrected. Regards ★☆ DUCKISJAMMMY☆★ 13:30, 14 January 2013 (UTC)

Hello DuckIsJammy/PeanutButter - and many thanks for fixing those. I am still getting the hang of deletion sorting - for example I initially thought that just adding the delsort template on the AfD page was enough to push the discussion onto the sorting page. By the way it was your sterling work in this regard popping up on my watchlist that gave me the impetus to have a go. I think it's vital work so that AfDs get a proper discussion. But figuring out the process is not as straightforward as it might be :) Mcewan (talk) 13:37, 14 January 2013 (UTC)
It's not that complicated but is open to mistakes initially probably doesn't help we don't have examples. The most common mistakes (one of which you mentioned above) adding the tag but not listing it on the delsort page or vice versa adding it to the delsort page but not adding the tag. The other being sorting under the generic People when it may be more appropriate to sort under the more specific Sportspeople or Authors. A Soldier for example goes under People and Military whereas a college professor goes under Academics and Educators. The best way to learn is really observing other delsorters sortings and using the lists this or this to help you. We need all the help we can get so it would be great if you stuck with it. ★☆ DUCKISJAMMMY☆★ 14:25, 14 January 2013 (UTC)

deletions to Concordia Theological Seminary entry

I guess I'm puzzled as to why the list of current faculty would not be "constructive." It's certainly very misleading to suggest that the faculty consists of one man! Articles_for_deletion/Commoners_in_the_United_Kingdom

Hello. I am leaving this message for those who commented on the recent AfD discussion on the article "Commoners in the United Kingdom." The discussion was closed by an admin with the comment "The result was no consensus. To delete, that is. But consensus that this should be editorially improved, e.g. by making it a dab page." I am not sure what articles a "dab" page ought to be linked to, so if someone wants to go ahead and do this, or discuss it on the talk page of the article, that would be fine. In the meantime I will remove the tags on the article as it was improved by you during the discussion, and I will continue to watch the article to make sure that that business about members of the royal family being "technically commoners" does not make a reappearance in the article without a reliable source.Smeat75 (talk) 23:44, 4 February 2013 (UTC)

Hi and thanks for reminding me about this. I have done some work on converting to a dab page, and dealing with the incoming links. Please dive in if you can see any errors or omissions. Thanks. Mcewan (talk) 10:15, 5 February 2013 (UTC)

Thanks! I have been watching for a while and your recent work prompted me to get involved. The lack of reliable neutral sources for him is frustrating though. But we seem to be on the way to a half-decent article :) Mcewan (talk) 09:15, 13 February 2013 (UTC)

Chris Rogers

With regard to Mr Rogers being a strikebreaker, it is known throughout the BBC, however it is not recorded in any source, he's too minor to be featured in the press. That doesn't mean it isn't true, it is easily verifiable. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Neerthun (talkcontribs) 21:52, 24 February 2013 (UTC)

Thanks for responding - I believe that it may be true, but for it to appear here, it needs to have been reported in a reliable source that can be referenced in the article. Please see the policy about biographies of living people. PS - I just found a mention of what happened in the Guardian and have added it to the article. Mcewan (talk) 22:03, 24 February 2013 (UTC)

Thanks, I didn't know that source existed. I'll ensure full referencing in future. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Neerthun (talkcontribs) 22:32, 24 February 2013 (UTC)

Inwale ? Inwhale? Shear clamp?

Hello just a few comments. I'm not sure in which part of the globe you hail from but be assured that both terms are in common use with shear clamp being preferred in USA. You may be correct in terms of some dictionaries but if you check net use you will see that both are in common use. Regards Captain Ted. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 122.62.226.243 (talk) 23:36, 3 June 2013 (UTC)

Hi, I assume you are looking at Boat building. I don't think the term Shear clamp is involved in any of my edits. I was more concerned with correcting "inwhale" to "inwale" - that's not contentious is it? Location-wise, I hail from a very small seafaring island almost antipodean to NZ. It's been a while since I built boats: back then I was the poor sod sent in to laminate the deck from the inside, well before health and safety were invented. Didn't really care what the bits were called. Mcewan (talk) 00:00, 4 June 2013 (UTC)

Changes to SuggestBot's suggestions

We have changed the number of suggested articles and which categories they are selected from. The number of stubs has been greatly reduced, the number of articles needing sources doubled, and two new categories added (orphans and unencyclopaedic articles). We have also modified the layout of the suggestions and added sortable columns with various types of information about each article. The first two columns are:

Views/Day
Daily average number of views an article's had over the past 14 days.
Quality
Predicted article quality on a 1- to 3-star scale. Placing your cursor over the stars should give you a pop-up describing the article's quality (Low/Medium/High), current assessment class, and predicted assessment class.

The method we use to predict article quality also allows us to assess whether an article might need specific types of work in order to improve its quality. The work needed might not correspond to cleanup tags added to the article, since our method is not based on those. We have added five columns reflecting this work assessment, where a red X indicates improvement is needed. Placing your cursor over an X should give you a pop-up with a short description of the work needed. The five columns seek to answer the following five questions:

Content
Is more content needed?
Headings
Does this article have an appropriate section structure?
Images
Is the number of illustrative images about right?
Links
Does this article link to enough other Wikipedia articles?
Sources
For its length, is there an appropriate number of citations to sources in this article?

SuggestBot picks articles in a number of ways based on other articles you've edited, including straight text similarity, following wikilinks, and matching your editing patterns against those of other Wikipedians. Disambiguation link notification for June 5

Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. Wikipedia appreciates your help. We noticed though that when you edited List of statues of Queen Victoria, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Victoria (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). Such links are almost always unintended, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of "Did you mean..." article titles. Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.
