Image licensing guidance

Hi Mdann52, I could really use your guidance on image licensing! You had a look at a logo for me that I had asked to be uploaded, but I screwed up somewhere it you declined it. I am new to wikipedia and am drafting an article on Chest Heart & Stroke Scotland, which is a very historic health charity here in Scotland.

I had hoped to have their logo added under creative commons (free to use, attribute, don't modify), but when I supplied a link to their copyright notice this caused a problem. Copyright is not my area of expertise!

I would deeply appreciate you letting me know where I went wrong and what I can do to fix this and get the logo approved. Thanks for your patience! Jason — Preceding unsigned comment added by Jasonmacmillan (talkcontribs) 13:05, 4 September 2013 (UTC)

@Jasonmacmillan:Their license page clearly states they own full copyright of the image. Once the draft is accepted, you can upload it under a claim of Fair Use. Mdann52 (talk) 13:08, 4 September 2013 (UTC)

Good to know; thanks! J — Preceding unsigned comment added by Jasonmacmillan (talkcontribs) 13:11, 4 September 2013 (UTC)

Speedy deletion declined: User:DANTAH

Hello Mdann52. I am just letting you know that I declined the speedy deletion of User:DANTAH, a page you tagged for speedy deletion, because of the following concern: Users are allowed to blank their user page. They have not specifically requested deletion (U1). Thank you. Alexf(talk) 12:29, 6 September 2013 (UTC)

Speedy deletion declined: KAAF University College

Hello Mdann52, and thanks for patrolling new pages! I am just letting you know that I declined the speedy deletion of KAAF University College, a page you tagged for speedy deletion, because of the following concern: There is sufficient context to identify the subject of the article. You may wish to review the Criteria for Speedy Deletion before tagging further pages. Thank you. Shirt58 (talk) 23:10, 6 September 2013 (UTC)

This film was just released September 6, and beginning as far back as last November,[1] has received coverage enough to meet WP:NF.[2][3] [4] [5] [6] [7] Article has issues (now tagged) and needs work, but it serves the project and its readers that this stay and be improved over time and through regular editing. And with the release only days ago, we can certainly expect more coverage. Perhaps you might withdraw your nomination? Cheers. Schmidt, Michael Q. 12:23, 10 September 2013 (UTC)

Patwa

Sorry, missed your message on my talk page. Revert me if you feel it's appropriate. I do not believe the tags were redundant; the majority of sources used in the article have been passing mentions or press releases, which do not establish notability. Again, revert me if you feel it's appropriate. Edward321 (talk) 22:42, 11 September 2013 (UTC)

Thank you both for helping. For the notability component, we just cited a source that is not a passing mention and is not a press release. That reference can be found here: http://www.latimes.com/entertainment/envelope/cotown/la-fi-ct-factorymade-20130910,0,1723531,full.story

Also, we do not understand what this other issue means "may rely excessively on sources too closely associated with the subject," because all of the sources cited are from various publications. Thank you.

Village People links

There are no pages for the "people" you're making wikilinks for. The dead links light up red on the page. Why don't you create pages for Whitehead, Forrest and Mouton and them link them? Hotcop2 (talk) 18:23, 17 September 2013 (UTC)

@Hotcop2: Your removal of these links was inappropriate - see Wikipedia:REDLINK. Redlinks encourage people to make articles; However, that isn't my area of expertise. --Mdann52talk to me! 07:20, 18 September 2013 (UTC)
Well, one of them is dead and no "written" (read: sourceable) info is available on them, and we also know that Wiki insists on sources for every other word, so that would prove a bit of a problem. Hotcop2 (talk) 13:17, 18 September 2013 (UTC)

Hello, I'm BracketBot. I have automatically detected that your edit to Non-sports trading card may have broken the syntax by modifying 2 "()"s. If you have, don't worry: just edit the page again to fix it. If I misunderstood what happened, or if you have any questions, you can leave a message on my operator's talk page.

List of unpaired brackets remaining on the page:

I was just writing to ask about the reversion to the "Big Bang (South Korea band)" reversion.

Would you please explain what you meant by "rm copyrighted material"?

The images are on flickr with a creative commons 2.0 license and I thought that it was alright to share.

Nomination of Civil recognition of Jewish divorce for deletion

A discussion is taking place as to whether the article Civil recognition of Jewish divorce is suitable for inclusion in Wikipedia according to Wikipedia's policies and guidelines or whether it should be deleted.

The article will be discussed at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Civil recognition of Jewish divorce until a consensus is reached, and anyone is welcome to contribute to the discussion. The nomination will explain the policies and guidelines which are of concern. The discussion focuses on high-quality evidence and our policies and guidelines.

Users may edit the article during the discussion, including to improve the article to address concerns raised in the discussion. However, do not remove the article-for-deletion notice from the top of the article.

Concern, reason or rationale: It is an original research largely by its creator as part of his series of work also of original research on the theme of the subject of the Conflict of laws; only an Israeli Jewish (religious) divorce can be recognized by civil authorities overseas, and that is only an automatic legal right in domestic law in the United Kingdom and in the Republic of Ireland; the article is unnecessarily, unacceptably and unreasonably hypothetical and legalistic, and ought to be merged with the main article, being Get (divorce document). 212.50.182.151 (talk) 10:57, 29 September 2013 (UTC)

October 2013 AFC Backlog elimination drive

WikiProject Articles for creation Backlog Elimination Drive

WikiProject AFC is holding a one month long Backlog Elimination Drive!
The goal of this drive is to eliminate the backlog of unreviewed articles. The drive is running from October 1st, 2013 – October 31st, 2013.

Awards will be given out for all reviewers participating in the drive in the form of barnstars at the end of the drive.
There is a backlog of over 2300 articles, so start reviewing articles! Visit the drive's page and help out!

A new version of our AfC helper script is released! It includes many bug fixes, new improvements and features, code enhancements, and more. If you want to see a full list of changes, visit the changelog. Please report bugs and feature requests there, too! Thanks. --Mdann52talk to me!

Help test better mass message delivery

Hi. You're being contacted as you've previously used global message delivery (or its English Wikipedia counterpart). It doesn't feel so great to be spammed, does it? ;-)

For the past few months, Legoktm has built a replacement to the current message delivery system called MassMessage. MassMessage uses a proper user interface form (no more editing a /Spam subpage), works faster (it can complete a large delivery in minutes), and no longer requires being on an access list (any local administrator can use it). In addition, many tiny annoyances with the old system have been addressed. It's a real improvement! :-)

You can test out MassMessage here: testwiki:Special:MassMessage. The biggest difference you'll likely notice is that any input list must use a new {{#target:}} parser function. For example, {{#target:User talk:Jimbo Wales}} or {{#target:User talk:Jimbo Wales|test2.wikipedia.org}}. For detailed instructions, check out mw:Help:Extension:MassMessage.

If you find any bugs, have suggestions for additional features, or have any other feedback, drop a note at m:Talk:MassMessage. Thanks for spamming! --MZMcBride (talk) 05:19, 1 October 2013 (UTC)

Need reviewers?

I noticed that you are taking some of the charge in the article review backlog. Are any special privileges needed to perform reviews? Dovid (talk) 17:10, 2 October 2013 (UTC)

@Dovid: No – just an understanding of Wikipedia policies. See WP:AFCR for instructions. I have left a welcome template on your talk page. --Mdann52talk to me! 17:24, 2 October 2013 (UTC)
I could ask this on the project talk page, but I'm probably just misisng a few obvious things. Please let me know your thoughts on these:
  1. Via the AFC category pages, I've encountered a number of articles where the template states that they are NOT under review at this time. Is that a bug? I felt like it was wasting my time.
  2. Similarly, a few that had already been declined … and even worse, many that had already been approved! Again, discouraging.
  3. I'm pretty "up" on WP policies (I've done thousands of edits, created a few articles myself, participated in consensus building and admin-assisted special ops, etc.). However, I'm finding it hard to deal with the Gnn reason codes and WikiProject templates. Any advice? Is this something that should really be in the script?
  4. What do we do with Sandbox entries that the author obviously never wanted reviewed, even though they are in a review status? I'm not sure how they got there to begin with. For example, I saw a page that was obviously intended to the User main page, once he got his broken English repaired, and it was far from complete, yet it somehow had come into AfC. Really don't know how. Any idea how it got to us? Or what to do about any such article in review?
  5. I did approve one article, but I'm not sure I did two things correctly for it. a) I did some minor, obvious content cleanup (extraneous headings on a stub, hide TOC on stub, move infobox to top). b) I saw some obvious connections to other stubs on the same subject (a book series). AFter I approved it, I edited the automatic message on the user's talk page and added some suggestions to create a comprehensive book list for the series and possibly to merge all the short articles into a single larger one. Were these two actions god, bad, or indifferent?

If you think these questions belon in the project talk page, fel free. Honestly, I think this project is begging for a new-reviewer-FAQ. And maybe some screen-shot tutorial. Dovid (talk) 04:38, 4 October 2013 (UTC)

@Dovid:
  1. Is a known issue; AS long as you are accessing the list via the tab at the top of the AFC page, it is ok. FYI, the submission template is normally at the bottom.
  2. Someone beat you to it! Try reviewing further down the queue
  3. Don't worry – Gnn codes are speedy delete (found at WP:CSD) – You don't need to worry about them. Also don't worry too much about WikiProjects – If you don't rate it, I am currently going through and fixing that.
  4. Just replace the {{afc submission}} with {{User sandbox}}
  5. All of them were ok. We encourage reviewers to clean up, and let the writer know if it could be improved.
I will add some of this to the instructions. Feel free to ask if you have any more questions! --Mdann52talk to me! 07:11, 4 October 2013 (UTC)

WikiProject Bangladesh Premier League Co-ordinator election

Hey Mdann52, I believe this election for WP:BPL has ended. Now will you please announce the result, kindly?--Pratyya (Hello!) 12:57, 22 October 2013 (UTC)

This one has me a bit puzzled. How does an AFC/C submission get accepted then shortly thereafter deleted? I noticed its empty status (despite my suggested articles and categories for inclusion) shortly after it was accepted, noticed later on the note about its pending deletion due to it being empty, and was considering filling it up with some articles, but now - Poof! - it's gone. Was there some reason my suggested articles were not included and could their inclusion have prevented the deletion? I'm not terribly active here and can be very procrastinatory with the edits (hence my preferred use of AFC with it's smooth, efficient, and official-like process for category creation) so my apologies for my recent inaction, but if I had known this would happen, I might have intervened to added some articles as soon as the submission was accepted.

BTW, here are some more suggested articles:

The Apartment
Haiku Tunnel
Head Office
Office Romance
The Office Party
Office Monkey
Netherbeast Incorporated
Drones (film)
Office Killer
God, Inc.
Golden Years (TV programme)
Office Office
The Great Office War
Stupid, Stupid Man
Joe Somebody
Working Girl
Horrible Bosses
Workaholics
Big (film)

Sorry about that; I didn't realize the category wasn't automatically populated... recreated, with your list of categories. --Mdann52talk to me! 07:10, 25 October 2013 (UTC)
Hello again! Thanks so much for the above, but I figured I'd let you know that likely due to the fact that this was a category recreation, the original talk page with its AFC info and categorization is no longer present. I was hoping that talk page could be restored along with the cat if it was undeleted rather than recreated, but I winced when I saw it was RHaworth who had the duty to pull the trigger on the deletion. When I commented on the nature of this deletion, hoping for a restoration, he kinda just griped and didn't do anything. Should the talk page and its associated categories be restored/recreated? Your call, and Thank You. 4.254.85.71 (talk) 07:41, 28 October 2013 (UTC)

Similarly, I only have a little over 5,800 edits and reviewer rights; so can understand any desire for a more experienced nominator. Matty.007 19:02, 26 October 2013 (UTC)

Hi. Just a quick note regarding your RfA, which I've been looking through. Some editors may look a little unfavourably on your use of would of in your answer to a question there, particularly as admins can be expected to be communicating with new users a fair bit. As you've apparently not been made aware of this here before, I hope you won't mind me mentioning it! Of course, it's entirely up to you how much notice you take of this, and how valid you consider such potential concerns are. Cheers. -- Trevj (talk) 15:58, 30 October 2013 (UTC)

Is it appropriate to add a Google Earth kml that I compiled to a Wikipedia page? If so, are there any examples of best practices? No. The main reason for this is that software such as Google Earth is copyrighted, along with the maps/images, and they fail our non-free content rules. --Mdann52talk to me! 20:28, 29 October 2013 (UTC)

I'm curious about that since KML is not software that I know of. It's a series of gps coordinates in an XML file. Wikipedia uses singular gps coordinates in the GeoHack which in turned links to dozens of mapping applications including free ones. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Dcoffida (talkcontribs) 01:15, 30 October 2013 (UTC)

Publisher v work

Simplest way to explain this: when citing an article from eg The Daily Telegraph then the work is The Daily Telegraph. The Daily Telegraph is not published by The Daily Telegraph - it is published by Telegraph Media Group. Similarly, the Daily Mail is a work; it is published by Dmg media. The Sun is a work, published by News Group Newspapers. As a rule of thumb, where you take a cite from is the work, not the publisher. BlackberrySorbet 23:17, 3 November 2013 (UTC)

"Sandboxr" article review

Good evening Mdann52,

I am wondering if you could review an article you deleted recently? I have edited the original article and would like to get this reviewed and published if possible. Someone else had written the original article and it was untouched and unedited for over 6 months. I would appreciate any feedback you have to make this an unbiased article.

Thanks for your help with this.

Hello Mdann52. Thank you very much for reviewing, accepting and publishing the article I created on Baye McNeil. I have some more work on it since its publication - noting more references, and including an external link...I saw that another editor inserted a notice at top of article questioning its notability. I don't understand why. I followed all instructions I was given on articles for creation help page and in live chat I did with help page - noting sources I was informed were reliable...Do you have any thoughts on this? Once again, thank you for your help! Minusminority (talk) 05:23, 7 November 2013 (UTC)

This is probably what I was expecting; The sources are ok to keep the article in mainspace, but it is always looking for more. The template has several useful links in it, and I would recommend looking at them to see if any more exist. --Mdann52talk to me! 13:54, 7 November 2013 (UTC)
Hello Mdann52. Thanks for the reply. By "template" you mean notice/tag re. notability at top of article, right?...There are numerous references on subject that pop up when doing google search. I've included several more since submitting article. I don't understand why notability is being questioned. I'll leave a post re. this on talk page of article...Thanks again for your help! Hello Mdann52, FYI, I see you tagged Baye McNeil article as "orphan." I've added some links to article and was wondering if they suffice or more are needed...(Noted this on article's talk page as well.)...Thanks for your input!...Minusminority (talk) 02:14, 8 November 2013 (UTC)
