GOCE drive news

Guild of Copy Editors January 2011 backlog elimination drive

Greetings from the Guild of Copy Editors January 2011 Backlog elimination drive! The drive is halfway over, so here are some mid-drive stats.

Participation
GOCE January 2011 backlog elimination drive progress graphs

So far, 43 people have signed up for this drive. Of these, 25 have participated. If you signed up for the drive but haven't participated yet, it's not too late! Try to copy edit at least a few articles. Remember, if you have rollover words from the last drive, you will lose them if you do not participate in this drive. If you haven't signed up for the drive yet, you can sign up now.

Progress report

We have eliminated two months from the backlog – January and February 2009. One of our goals is to eliminate as many months as possible from the 2009 backlog. Please help us reduce the size of this part of the backlog if you haven't already. Another goal is to reduce the entire backlog by 10%, or by 515 articles. Currently, we have eliminated 375 articles from the queue, so if each participant copy edits four more articles, we will reach that goal.

Thank you for participating in the January 2011 drive. We anticipate it will be another big success!

"vandalism" edit

Hi,

I edited the facial moles page to get rid of a bunch of idiomatic nonsense and remove a ridiculously specific description of the "wealth spots" found on a human face. In addition, I softened the author's assertion that moleomancy is a key element of "Chinese culture" by adjusting it to say "traditional Chinese culture."

I failed to provide a detailed explanation as I had placed other edits in the section explaining what I was doing before deciding to cut out the description of the 9 wealth spots hoping that common sense would prevail. When it did not, I made the same changes, this time providing (as requested) a brief explanation of my reasons for editing.

In a nutshell, please put my changes back. Nobody cares about the wealth spots. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 24.176.249.241 (talk) 06:22, 19 January 2011 (UTC)

I did put your changes back. Have a good day. TheMikeWassup doc? 06:23, 19 January 2011 (UTC)

LSD

I appreciate your message, rather than reverting my edit with no explanation. The reference that exists does not suggest that the cognitive/behavioural deficits were signs of organic brain damage- that was from an earlier paper entitled- Chronic LSD users: The Acidheads, lovely title, which still did not suggest that there was any damage, nor that it was a result of LSD use (in fact the measures were not really cognitive performance anyway). Cohen (the ref actually cited) found cognitive and behavioural deficits, but were a very long way from suggesting any organic damage. A further study on the subject found similar results, though to a lesser degree, and again suggested that it was not appropriate to suggest the impairments were causally related to LSD use. The last paper, which has the benefit of reviewing the other two papers, states that the designs of all the studies inhibit any conclusion the impairments associated with LSD are indicative of brain damage. Here is the link to the ref- http://www.lycaeum.org/research/researchpdfs/1936.pdf. Ninahexan (talk) 08:39, 19 January 2011 (UTC)

Hi Mike, could please give an edit warring notice to this user. He seems to be changing the fact that Bangalore is now the third busiest in terms of passenger traffic. Prior to creating an account, he has made the same edits ([3], [4]). Thanks, Why so serious? Talk to me 05:52, 23 January 2011 (UTC)

Hmm, but we do have references which state that BIA is the third busiest right? I think we also had a discussion about that on the talk page, and only then did we change the stuff in the article. Just redirect him to that. I'll leave a note on his talk page. TheMikeWassup doc? 06:01, 23 January 2011 (UTC)
Yeah we do have the same. BIA's stats is 11.24 million passengers and Chennai's is 10.53 million. Unfortunately the previous source from BIA's website has been deletd, but I did find yahoo with the same article and have cited the same. Why so serious? Talk to me 06:04, 23 January 2011 (UTC)
Also, regarding the name of Chennai Airport, I did some googling, and Chennai International Airport gets 787,000 hits, as opposed to Annadurai International Airport, which gets just around 9,080 hits. But Anna International Airport gets 1,170,000 hits. I think as per WP:COMMONNAME, we should change the name. But, AAI's official website calls it Chennai International Airport. Any ideas what to do? TheMikeWassup doc? 06:11, 23 January 2011 (UTC)
I guess we'll have to check out some references online regarding the name "Anna International". AAI's website calls BIA as Bangalore International when AYK it is Bengaluru International. For now let "Anna International" be removed. Why so serious? Talk to me 06:35, 23 January 2011 (UTC)
Chennai International seems non controversial and fine for now. I guess we should let it be there till we find more refs. TheMikeWassup doc? 06:55, 23 January 2011 (UTC)

Reliable source(s) to Sonia Gandhi

MikeLynch

Is [this] not a reliable source?

It is the website of a government organization (Political Party) and the paragraph updated was taken from [Frontiline], which belongs to one of the most subscribed dailies/newspapers The Hindu.

If you remain defiant, then there is no answer to prove or give reliable sources.

Regards

Sushil — Preceding unsigned comment added by Sushil10s (talkcontribs) 02:14, 25 January 2011 (UTC)

It is obviously not a reliable source. It looks to be the website of the Janata Party, which is a political party in India. It is not a government organisation in any way. And by the way, I do not think that you have cited that particular source anywhere. All you had cited was some letter written by a certain Mr. Swamy to the President, saying that Ms. Gandhi was Italian. That is hardly a reliable source. Please read WP:RS thoroughly. I feel kinda bad. But then, I don't know what we said. Anyway, I'll clean that up. TheMikeWassup doc? 08:46, 25 January 2011 (UTC)
Ha! Some edits of mine when I began editing were either reverted or removed, but I did not take it as a reason to believe that the editors were against me! It would have happened to you as well. What is so strange is that we were referring only to two articles he contributed to and not the entire 20 odd articles. And moreover we never used a harsh tone at all. We are not at fault. He has not taken it in a positive sense, which we should when an editor explains why our edits are removed/reverted. Anyways, just leave it. And thanks for the cleanup. Why so serious? YouTube videos as External Links

Hi there,

I've come across your edits on several Karnataka related pages, so I'm writing to you. I've come across an editor recently who seems adamant on adding a certain YouTube video of Pt. Bhimsen Joshi's performance on the artists's article page. While this seems to be a promotional attempt, I have discussed the nature of such an addition with the editor. See User_talk:Paradise_coyote#January_2011. However, it seems that the editor is determined to engage in an edit war, in spite of being told to discuss the issue on the article's talk page. See this Would you butting in to ascertain the exact nature of such an addition of the specific YouTube video and whether its addition qualifies as an attempt of promotion...

William Lawson

Hello Mike

My name and user name are both the same ie Terry Carrick. I have a Ph.D. in historical research so I guess you could say that any inclusions or editions I make have a degree of credability.

Yesterday I added my first article. The subject a gentleman called William Lawson. You contacted me with some advice which was very helpful. I have now edited the article and it looks better than before. I am learning but not so fast.

How do I remove the three statements made by Wikipedia at the top of the article and how do I change the title to Read William Lawson (Co-operator) not (Businessman) as at the moment.

Regards

Murder of RTI activists

Hello, The reliable sources use the word "murder". Why should we use another word that you describe in your own edit summary as "soft"? This should be discussed on the article's talk page. Cullen328 (talk) 15:44, 31 January 2011 (UTC)

Simply because this is an encyclopedia and we should keep in mind the appropriate tone. The sentence used to read something like In India, many RTI activists are murdered. We are not bound by what words the reliable sources use. TheMikeWassup doc? 17:11, 31 January 2011 (UTC)
Please read WP:EUPHEMISM from the Manual of Style: "Do not assume that plain languge is inappropriate." The word "murder" is jusified by what the reliable sources say, and any attempt to "soften" it is inappropriate, in my view. Cullen328 (talk) 18:08, 31 January 2011 (UTC)
I've reverted your deletion of the word "murder" since it is plain language justified by reliable sources and conforms to the Manual of Style. Please discuss proposed changes on the article's talk page. Thank you. Cullen328 (talk) 05:34, 1 February 2011 (UTC)
I will look into it. BTW, just change the word. I did some other minor edits too. Kindly don't revert that. TheMikeWassup doc? 15:47, 1 February 2011 (UTC)

M G Road

Hey Mike, wouldn't it be better if we rename all the M G Roads listed here to the full name Mahatma Gandhi Road, <city name>? Why so serious? Talk to me 17:14, 31 January 2011 (UTC)

I dunno. Newspapers usually mention them as MG Road rite? TheMikeWassup doc? 17:16, 31 January 2011 (UTC)
Yup they do. But most articles have the full name of the place mentioned. I believe as long as there is a proper redirect, it should be ok. What do say? Why so serious? Talk to me 17:18, 31 January 2011 (UTC)
Are there other FAs or GAs of roads, with which we can compare naming conventions? TheMikeWassup doc? 17:21, 31 January 2011 (UTC)
There is one. Mount Pleasant Road. But apparently there doesn't seem to be an abbreviated name for the road as per the article. Why so serious? Talk to me 17:28, 31 January 2011 (UTC)
I guess the most popular and common name is MG Road itself isn't it. TheMikeWassup doc? 18:01, 31 January 2011 (UTC)

Yup it is. But the MG Road of Kochi, Kolkata are already moved to the full name. I believe all the MG roads should maintain a similar title with only the city names to differentiate them. Why so serious? Talk to me 18:06, 31 January 2011 (UTC)

Have a look at the Kolkata article. The intro says Mahatma Gandhi Road, more commonly M.G. Road. I think the Kolkata article has to be moved to M.G. Road, because, by its own admission, it is commonly known as MG Road. TheMikeWassup doc? 18:14, 31 January 2011 (UTC)
It's not just the Kolkata MG Road, all Mahatma Gandhi Roads of India are commonly known as MG road. Well even if they have to be named as MG road per WP:UCN, then which among the following should it be:
  • MG Road
  • M G Road
  • M.G. Road
  • M. G. Road
I guess we'll have to take it to the appropriate forum for discussion. And you should be knowing better where to take it. Why so serious? Talk to me 18:21, 31 January 2011 (UTC)
M. G. Road seems to be good, because i've read the MOS on that, and i just think that it looks more elegant than just MG Road. TheMikeWassup doc? 15:48, 1 February 2011 (UTC)
Vokay! Some articles are named MG road or M G road, so do we move them to M. G. Road? Why so serious? Talk to me 05:08, 2 February 2011 (UTC)

Could you have a look at this article? Does it need to be AfD'ed? Why so serious? Talk to me 03:52, 1 February 2011 (UTC)

I think it has some historical importance. Though it does not cite any sources, it doesn't look like a hoax. I'd suggest putting tags until someone finds sources for it. TheMikeWassup doc? 16:00, 1 February 2011 (UTC)

Hello. I'm new to Wikipedia. Um... are you now adopting? 'Cause if so, that would really be helpful. I've got some questions.

1. You may not know the answer, but, do you know any good facts about Air pollution? 2. Where do I write about a topic? 3. Is there anything important I should know like rules, important information etc?

Thanks-- — Preceding unsigned comment added by Daisyjordan (talkcontribs) 01:07, 3 February 2011 (UTC)

There is an ongoing discussion on Milborne's talk page regarding the merger issue. You have added this, but AFIK, in 2007, AI was invited to join Star Alliance. NACIL too was created around the same time to facilitate the merger of IC into AI. But the two still remain separate airlines. AI is expected to join Star Alliance by mid this year (something that was decided back in 2007) and the merger of IC into AI will have to be complete before this happens. Let's wait for a conclusion on the discussion. Abhishek Talk to me 16:16, 6 February 2011 (UTC)

BTW the code that will be used is AI and not IA as mentioned in the source! Abhishek Talk to me 16:18, 6 February 2011 (UTC)
Errh, I hope I was not rude in the second statement I made here. If I was, I apologise for the same.Abhishek Talk to me 16:50, 6 February 2011 (UTC)
Don't worry man, you weren't rude! Yeah, I too found the IA part weird. Also, yeah, I couldn't really find other news articles relating to this code merging stuff. In any case, I don't think the source cited is 'unreliable' by itself. Let me know how that discussion goes. TheMikeWassup doc? 17:02, 6 February 2011 (UTC)
Thanks for that. I do agree that the source itself is not unreliable. But the problem is that an exact date is not mentioned and moreover when NACIL was formed, there was extensive coverage in the media on the issue. But now in the final stages when NACIL is on the process of obtaining an SOC, there is no coverage at all. (With the SOC, AI will again become the largest airline in India). Pretty funny! And regarding the discussion, Miborne has not replied as yet. I suggest, we wait and watch. And hey Mike, please have a look at this, we could probably include some info in the article from this source. Thanks, Abhishek Talk to me 17:21, 6 February 2011 (UTC)
If I may ask, are you there in this pic? Abhishek Talk to me 19:18, 6 February 2011 (UTC)
Yeah :P TheMikeWassup doc? 17:46, 9 February 2011 (UTC)

Vendor Material Added Back to the Master Data Management Page

I noticed that a few weeks back you removed some material on "Virtual Master Data Management" on the Master Data Management page. It's back and as a newbie, I'm not sure what should be done about it.

While I'm new to trying to edit Wikipedia, I'm a consultant who's been working in MDM since before the term was invented. This so called "Virtual" MDM is not common terminology and as near as I can tell is limited to one vendor I've never heard of. The reference to IBM's virtual registry is a red herring, as the registry approach is only one of three or four approaches to implementing MDM, each with significant pros and cons, with the registry approach generally considered a stepping stone to more sophisticated implementations. The size of the discussion of it relative to the rest of the material is certainly out of proportion to the more common MDM practices.

I also note that the material has been edited out and added back more than once.

How is this supposed to work, particularly if the people making this edit continue to add the material back? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Slstrickland (talkcontribs) 21:45, 15 February 2011 (UTC)

First of all, Welcome to Wikipedia! Its great to have new users like you on board. About the article in question, I'll look into the history of the article. Basically how it works is like this: Provide a reliable source for your additions, and no one can remove it! The problem arises when editors do not give proper sources for their additions of text. I understand your good intentions, and appreciate them. Yes, it is indeed frustrating when another user removes material you added with good intentions. What I appreciate about you is the fact that you got back to me, rather than giving up. Will get back to you at the earliest. Have a good day! Mike I was re-ordering the sections. I don't think that your revert actually took because I thought I was getting hit with a failure to sign with four tildes...Brothercanyouspareadime (talk) 08:01, 16 February 2011 (UTC)

Please check what I'm doing before you revert it. I made legitimate edits and you warmed my IP about vandalism and reverted it. Thanks. Mathewignash (talk) 14:48, 18 February 2011 (UTC)
