Alma (2008)

I considered that, but I also considered that it would take weeks for someone to review it. I thought by the time it was reviewed that it would be stable. There is one article I've had on GA review now virtually every day (except for 3 days) since April 15...climate. So many articles lie ahead of Alma, that it's likely safe to leave it on there. It will just keep the pressure on to keep it updated/current. I'm not anticipating large changes to the article between now and the time of its review, are you? TACA flight 390 - tropical storm Alma

Miss Madeline,

I want to start off with you understanding I am not trying to start an edit-war. The 3r's and you're blocked is not what I want to see happen to me!! After reading the stern and terse message you left on my talk page I'd be committing editorial suicide if I tried to change the article following the rules of Fowler's Dictionary of Modern English Usage.

At your suggestion, I did look at CNN's coverage. They used BOTH version of capitalisation. All caps in the headline and text, but lowercase but for the name Alma under the image. BTW, when did CNN become the bastion of the English language.

A review of other news outlets, from around the world (UK, France, Australia, China) used the lowercase version, with one headline even starting with, "Tropical storm Alma...." Exceptions to this were newspapers who had used the AP newswire exactly as it was sent. It appears that only in the USA do the nouns get the upgrade to caps. I can imagine the editors in Sydney, Australia received a few letters or emails about the correct use of the "Queen's English."

Since the MOS suggests spelling, etc, in English should use the local variations consistent with the locale of the subject it is best I leave this article as is.

I hope you feel the same for all articles that don't have a thing to do with the USA.

Hurricane season variance

I fixed the season articles between 1936 and 1964, using the dates defined those years by the U. S. Weather Bureau. The dates changed at least 3 times. That was an excellent find, and has brought up an important question regarding what to do with articles prior to 1935/1936, where there may not have been a defined hurricane season for the Atlantic. 1959 Mexico hurricane - clarification

An anon recently changed a fact that to the aforementioned hurricane being one of five Category 5 tropical cyclones in strike Mexico, which you originally had as seven. Perhaps it would be best to mention the others, since I only count four (Janet, Gilbert, Dean, and this one), but you provide some clarification to this? featured topic

Hello, I was looking at the featured topic you recently nominated which is very good by the way but there are a number of hurricane articles that occured during the season that do not have an article. I think none of them reached landfall but still there are articles on hurricsnes that did not reach land. This may show a gap in the topic and therefore fails the criteria. I will not mention this on page until you contact me on your response. Any of the storms in this particular season that don't have articles lack them for a reason. The significant storms that were particularly intense or caused damage have articles. All of the other storms that never made landfall would fail WPTC's notability standards, as they would have little or no information to write about them. Timeline

Help me fix a timeline

For some reason, the timeline at 1994 Pacific hurricane season#Timeline is not displaying properly, and I can't determine how to fix it. Could you please help me? I don't have the faintest clue how to edit timelines, but asking at the Village Pump or the Help Desk might be a good idea. Sometimes messing with the numbers makes it come back. It's a really buggy feature. You are probably not doing anything wrong. Maybe ?action=purge will help?Potapych (talk) 05:57, 28 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, Miss Madeline. I think (hope) there are now only 2 outstanding items:

Refs to a book I don't have (Ponder & Lindberg 2008), on species counts: no page nums; it's a compilation (P & L are editors), but no author or title given for the relevant chapter. I've asked the relevant WP editor to help. If I get no response in 3 days, I'll use whatever I can get from the textbook I've got, and scrap anything that's unsupported as a result of the change.
I think the "related Wiki projects" boxes on this page are so useless that they may deter readers from visiting them in cases where they are useful, so I'd like to delete them. What do you think? -- Philcha (talk) 15:02, 22 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

List of Category 5 Pacific hurricanes

Do you think this article would have a place for one of those track maps with all of the category 5 pacific hurricanes on it? I also fixed the track map for Emilia (the 140 knot data point is now in HURDAT) and I corrected the track for Patsy (the ATCR has a map that it should look like). Hey, the creation of Timeline of the 1997 Pacific hurricane season kinda means the 1997 Pacific hurricane season should go under retention, as that article presents a notable gap. In other words, the topic has 3 months from the date of the article's creation (i.e. until March 25) to get the article to FL and into the topic, otherwise someone can nominate the topic for removal - rst20xx (talk) 00:53, 4 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
