Disambiguation Request[edit]

I think you should consider making a disambiguation page for this bio:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Matt_Weiss

It is evident that you are passionate and knowledgeable about professional soccer and semi-professional soccer. And, I can see through your history that you have made a tremendous contribution to Wikipedia.

But, don’t you think that since we have a current NFL football coach and a former semi-pro US / NAIA soccer player with the same name, we should at least put up a disambiguation page?

I think it is fair to expect that the NFL football coach will have more hits in the future. 65.119.126.3 (talk) 19:18, 26 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

NPSL I and NPSL II[edit]

instead of using these could use National Professional Soccer League (1984–2001) for 2 (NPSL II) and National Professional Soccer League (1967) for 1. by the way some of your NPSL for the 84-01 actually link back to the 1967 page .

1959 National 'Open' Cup[edit]

I would have to disagree with the article move. There is a reason why I used National Challenge Cup(NCC) and not U.S. Open Cup(USOC). The tournament naming has been a long debate among researchers. I have talked about it here on wikipedia as well. Yes, there are articles the say USOC but there are also upwards of twenty some other variations as well. They depend on who is writing the story, the city, etc. Trust me, I have done the research, I have seen thousands of articles on this tournament. There needs to be consistency when dealing with the history. It would be best not to flip flop the names from one year to the next to accommodate every variation in print. Libro0 (talk) 07:17, 7 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Re: NC v OC I can talk for days on this so I will try to keep it brief. I had decided to use NCC for the historical period since it was official and verifiable through the 80's. I felt this was the best solution to reduce confusion, remain consistent, and retain the historical integrity of the tournament's heritage. From the 90's to now I decided to use USOC, again to maintain consistency and reduce confusion for the modern era. Despite what the hardware says for the 90's pre MLS editions I opted for USOC to bridge the gap prior to the tournament being given Lamar Hunt's name. To answer some of your questions: it does not appear the USFA was all too critical of 'official' names. So far there has been no evidence to indicate there ever was an official name change until the 1999 Lamar Hunt edition. I would use the phrase 'evolved into' when describing how USOC came about though keep in mind it was still one of many variations. While most of the reasons remain theory because one can only speculate as to the interaction between a committee member and a sportswriter. Unless you get lucky and the committee member was the actual soccer columnist as was the case in a Connecticut paper back in the 20's where we were treated to the inside scoop. Most of the members of the organization are not historians and kept few records if any at all combined with the change off to USASA in the 80's and back again in the 90's their focus is more on conducting the tournament than chronicling it. For decades it wasn't much of a money maker for the teams or the organizers. Libro0 (talk) 18:32, 10 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]

A barnstar for you![edit]

The Original Barnstar
I have no idea on how to reach you and I clicked here. I see that you have done a great deal with soccer biographies. I live in Ukraine and there is an American who just became Head Coach of Kherson Krystal in the professional 2nd Division of Ukrainian Football. He is a Head Coach of a professional soccer team in Europe. I know that he coached in the USL with "A" League Team the Bay Area Seals and USISL Team the Boston Storm (3rd Division). It might be worthwhile to make a page about him. I would do it but don't know how. He also coached the U-23 National Team of St Lucia. One of a few Americans who have coached another countries National Team. Natasha4581 (talk) 20:31, 10 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]

There is a American Soccer (Football) Coach coaching professional soccer in Ukarine. He has been named Head Coach of Krystal Kherson of the Ukraine Professional 2nd Division. It has been all over the news here and on many web sites. It is big news here as we are a really big football country with our Premiership ranked 7th by UEFA among domestic leagues (53 Countries/Leagues) in all of Europe. I live here in Ukraine and have read about him and live in Nikolaev which is next to Kherson. He is the first American to coach in Ukraine and as I understand he is the 3rd American born coach to be head coach of a European professional soccer team. He has a UEFA "A" License and a USSF "A" License. His name is Dennis Lukens and as I understand the other American born coaches to actually be a Head Coach of a professional European team are Brett Goulet and Gregg Berhalter. I went online and found some links about his coaching background. I have learned that he was Head Coach of the St Lucia U-23 National Team (2006-2008)http://www.uslfans.com/news/2006/news,2006,0139.shtml and lead them through CONCACAF Olympic Qualification in 2008 and is one of the few American born coaches to be Head Coach of another countries National Team. He was Head Coach of the Bay Area Seals of the USL "A" League http://www.soccertimes.com/directory/usisl/a-league/seals.htm ( Professional 1st Division) in 2000 and Head Coach/Player for Boston Storm http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Boston_Stormof the USISL (Professional 3rd Division) in 1993 and 1994. He was also Director of Soccer Operations and Assistant Coach http://www.ussoccerreview.com/publications/MISL.php for the California Cougars of the Major Indoor Soccer League back in 2005.

Here is a link in Russian annoucning him as Head Coach of Krystal Kherson. You can use Google translator to read it in English http://ukrfootball.in.ua/second-league-a/7644-khersonskyi-fk-krystal-ocholyv-amerykanets. Re: Professional sports[edit]

For starters, a league can call itself professional without it actually being the case. The best example of this is that roughly half the player in the Championat de France Amateur are in fact professionals. While, I've seen no evidence of that, I've seen no hard evidence the other way either.

Second, while obviously a necessary criterion, it is not sufficient for a league to be professional for it be included in the list of fully professional leagues. Unqualified, the word professional, for FPL purposes, is somewhat ambiguous. The English fifth division, the German fourth division, and the aforementioned CFA are all leagues you could reasonably describe as professional, but since all of them have amateur elements as well, none of them belong on the list. What is a necessary, is a source that specifically refers to the league as fully pro. The preferred type of source, however, is one that specifically speaks to the state of professionalism in the league in question. Usually this takes the form of player registration regulations, as many FPL's have professionalism requirements for clubs and players to even be permitted to play in the league. Other types of sources are usually articles that look at football clubs from a business point of view.

The reason for this is that WP:NSPORT, the guideline that the list was created to support, was designed specifically with the notion of semi-professionalism as it exits in the English league structure in mind. As a result, we place particular emphasis on the fact that a list must be fully professional to included. I hope this helps clarify things. Cheers. Help Needed in Proof for MISL being FULLY Pro.

Hello there, I noticed you have a good knowledge of the beautiful game. I have been arguing under my username talk that the first article I wrote on the soccer player james georgeff is instantly up for deletion. He was drafted to Dynamo, played several touranment games etc, no league games, then played in Portuguese 2nd div, then German 4th div. The page was up for deletion (still is) on grounds of not meeting pro criteria. I then made the point that this player was the first college athlete, Austrlian, to be drafted to the MLS. Also, was the first australian to be drafted as 1st overall pick in teh 2008 MISL draft. Now, the next form of suppression is, no, that MISL is not and was not a fully pro league, so esentially being the number 1 draft pick is not a notable event. Could you please if possible have a look on the james georgeff page and offer your expertise on the profesional nature of the MISL and the notoriety of being drafted as the first ever australian, and especially first ever australian as the number 1 draft overall in the MISL...?

Thank you! (Samej1902 (talk) 00:07, 15 August 2013 (UTC))[reply]

Survey: Use of Chronicling America on Wikipedia[edit]

My name is Donald Taylor and I'm the Wikipedian-in-Residence with the University of Maryland Libraries, Historic Maryland Newspapers Project. The Historic Maryland Newspapers Project is a part of the National Digital Newspaper Program, a joint program of the Library of Congress and the National Endowment for the Humanities. We are digitizing historic state newspapers for inclusion in the Library of Congress's Chronicling America online digital collection of America’s historical newspapers.

We are conducting a survey of Wikipedia contributors who have cited Chronicling America as a reference in their edits to Wikipedia. It is the objective of our study to identify ways that Chronicling America might be made a better resource for people editing Wikipedia. We recently used Linkypedia to identify contributors who have used Chronicling America. As an editor who has made use of Chronicling America, we hope that you will take our survey.

If you are interested in taking our survey, you can do so at this website.

More information about the survey is provided before you begin answering survey questions. Participation in the survey is strictly voluntary. It should take you less than thirty minutes to complete. You must be at least 18 years old to participate. If you have any questions about this survey, you can contact Donald Taylor, Wikipedian-in-Residence for the Historic Maryland Newspapers Project, at dwtii@umd.edu, or Elizabeth Caringola, Historic Maryland Newspapers Project Librarian, at ecaringo@umd.edu.

If you decide to take this survey, please do so within the week, by Friday, 8 August 2014.
