ArbCom 2023 Elections voter message

Hello! Voting in the 2023 Arbitration Committee elections is now open until 23:59 (UTC) on Monday, 11 December 2023. All eligible users are allowed to vote. Users with alternate accounts may only vote once.

The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.

If you wish to participate in the 2023 election, please review the candidates and submit your choices on the voting page. If you no longer wish to receive these messages, you may add {{NoACEMM}} to your user talk page. MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 00:48, 28 November 2023 (UTC)

Precious anniversary

Precious
Five years!

--Gerda Arendt (talk) 08:50, 27 November 2023 (UTC)

Thanks @Gerda. Damn, five years. And soon, my RfA will have been four years ago. I like how I'm able to measure how much has changed for me in a year with each anniversary. It's kind of crazy how much has changed since last year... Moneytrees🏝️(Talk) 17:10, 28 November 2023 (UTC)

What???

Noticed a funny similarity in your responses to Lourdes' admission and Esotrix's block. That's all. Dialmayo (talk) (Contribs) she/her 12:17, 30 November 2023 (UTC)

Yes @Dialmayo, I guess I am the emotive Arb. At WikiConference North America Toronto, about five different people quoted the "What The Hell" reaction when talking to me. One person asked if I was the "What The Fuck guy"... Moneytrees🏝️(Talk) 18:04, 1 December 2023 (UTC)

Comment for Signpost article re: arb brouhahas

You've written enough to be quoted on this already, but if you want to add anything to what's at Wikipedia:Wikipedia Signpost/Next issue/News and notes, let me know, and I can quote you. It would be interesting to get the perspective of the abstainer... jp×g🗯️ 06:03, 1 December 2023 (UTC)

@JPxG I think a reference to another time an Arb was considered for removal over something similar-- 2012's Statement regarding recent leaks from arbcom-l and the subsequent motion to remove Elen of the Roads (which failed)-- might be worth noting. Unless you or someone else at the Signpost have any specific questions for me, I don't feel like I have much else to add.
That said, some people have asked me offsite about what way I would have voted if I didn't abstain. I would like to say more but given my abstention and the private nature of the evidence (I should not confirm or deny etc), I don't think it's my place to do so at this time; maybe once the dust has settled I can give more substantive commentary. Among other things, I shared my thought process with my fellow Arbs, but didn't say how'd I vote. I don't want to say anything that might make me seem "two-faced", if that makes sense. I was planning on saying a bit more, but I feel like recent comments at ACN have basically covered anything I could say, or would otherwise contradict me in a confusing way. I have some hope @Eddie, I know dealing with copyright violations will be an indefinite job for this site, but that the process can and should be improved. Moneytrees🏝️(Talk) 23:35, 11 December 2023 (UTC)

Copyright and ChatGPT articles

Hey M, happy new year, first of all. I was just hanging about not doing anything productive, and just now, that took me to Category:OpenAI-written articles. I emptied it because it was populated by biographies. But presumably, that means we have ChatGPT articles being created now. Large language models are considered copyright violations by a lot of people, the most prominent example being The New York Times suit against OpenAI. But add to that, even if what ChatGPT does is all found to be above board, how do we attribute it properly on Wikipedia when there is no one edit in the article history from User:ChatGPT? I don't know the answer. So, I was wondering if this stuff has been discussed and consensus reached on how it all works. If yes, I need to catch up. If no, we presumably would need to do something about those articles? Best, Usedtobecool ☎️ 17:00, 10 January 2024 (UTC)

Relevant discussion about this category is also here: User talk:Habst#Category:OpenAI-written articles. --Habst (talk) 17:42, 10 January 2024 (UTC)
@Usedtobecool See Wikipedia:Large_language_models#Copyright_violations. We're not at "all AI generated content is a copyvio and should be removed", although that could change in the future. As for attribution, the essay I linked says edits should be attributed but that's not policy. Personally I think an editor should attribute when they do so. @Gerda Arendt I'll always your virtual postcards. I'm always looking forward to more cat pics, food pics, and scenic vistas. Moneytrees🏝️(Talk) 19:06, 2 January 2024 (UTC)

Question about procedural use of information

Say, in general, that there was an ArbCom case, and that a key party to the ArbCom case refused to participate, and that they were given the benefit of the doubt.

However, let’s assume that a publicly visible reference by another random editor on a random talk page mentioned that the editor was highly active under their real name (which has long been public, so no issue there) on a well-known platform/site. And that it was publicly visible that the party was continuing to churn out original content on the same topic area being discussed at ArbCom on this platform, while the case was ongoing. Thus, in such a case there would be no doubt that the party was intentionally avoiding the matter.

Would the details of such information be sufficiently sensitive to require privately mailing the Committee, or would it be okay to mention and/or link on a case talk page?

Sorry if this is a dumb question but I’ve had a very long day and don’t really know how ArbCom works yet.

Cheers, RadioactiveBoulevardier (talk) 08:54, 5 February 2024 (UTC)

@RadioactiveBoulevardier, I would email that to Arbcom first (Special:EmailUser/Arbitration_Committee) as a precaution. I can't garuntee that it would dresult in us doing anything, but it might be useful to keep for the archives/as extra evidence. Thanks for asking. Moneytrees🏝️(Talk) 09:13, 5 February 2024 (UTC)
@RadioactiveBoulevardier Did you ever send an email about this? If you were planning on doing so, we never got it. Moneytrees🏝️(Talk) 21:35, 9 February 2024 (UTC)
No, not yet; I've been really busy juggling stuff lately. RadioactiveBoulevardier (talk) 02:17, 11 February 2024 (UTC)

The image, taken on a cemetery last year after the funeral of a distant but dear family member, commemorates today, with thanks for their achievements, four subjects mentioned on the Main page and Vami_IV, a friend here. Listen to music by Tchaikovsky (an article where one of the four is pictured), sung by today's subject (whose performance on stage I enjoyed two days ago). --Gerda Arendt (talk) 16:30, 20 February 2024 (UTC)

Thanks @Gerda, I really appreciate it. Moneytrees🏝️(Talk) 21:00, 20 February 2024 (UTC)
Thank you! - Listen to music from Ukraine if you like, - I heard it in 2022, and the November concert (at a different church) raised a truckload of winter clothes. Block appeal (2021)

Hello Moneytree, I have been blocked since 2021 (on wikipedia English) for copywrite infringment, but it's been years and the block hasen't been lifted, even though I've mentioned that I understand why the block has been made, but I'm still block. Is it possible that you look into my case so that I will be able to edit again on Wikipedia? Thank you, I would appreciate your help. Jimmyp3 (talk) 14:35, 3 March 2024 (UTC)

@Jimmyp3 If you want to appeal, place the unblock template {{unblock|reason=Your reason here ~~~~}} on your talk page. I'll take a look but I can't guarantee anything. User:Moneytrees/Copyright blocks contains some advice on how to appeal a block for copyright violations. Moneytrees🏝️(Talk) 18:03, 11 March 2024 (UTC)

Best path to get involved at CCI long-term?

Hi Ted, I'm Chelsea. As I've taken a cautiously long time acquainting myself with en.wiki policies and norms, I've come across instances of your tireless contributions here more than once: thanks for all you do!

I did a deep-dive the other day in the CCI pages, including what I understood to be a backlog of diffs needing careful review after past CCI cases. This type of admin work just calls out to my soul, and I was wondering if you have advice on how to most effectively review the resources on this section of en.wiki activities. I saw that Counter-Vandalism has an "Academy" module (which I plan to progress through, for my own general understanding) and was curious as to whether CCI has any similar resources for newcomers to the process.

I wouldn't personally be interested in any of the decision-making or public-facing elements of CCI, as I am not good in dramatic situations and prefer to avoid them. However, the "drone work" of clean-up after an investigation is the sort of labor I find strangely relaxing.

To give further context, I have about ten years' experience as a Creative Commons and copyleft activist in graduate edu and open source software communities. Over that time, I've explained the fundamentals of free and open licensing to folks from all walks of life, so the very radical oppenness demanded by Wikipedia's use case is familiar to me. What *is* a little intimidating, still, is navigating what documentation needs to happen around confirmed cases of copyright infringement, what circumstances require rev-del, and so on.

I've finally started setting up a proper desktop environment so I can properly review diffs and use the more advanced editor tooling available there, which I expect would be especially necessary for this type of contribution. I'd love to review more documentation and get up to speed so I can usefully contribute in this area long-term. If you have any tips for me in pursuit of that goal, I would love to hear them.

Thanks for your time in reading this, for all you do for one of the coolest consensus-based knowledge experiments in human history, and for being in favor of copyright reform- solidarity there. Have a great day and happy editing! Chiselinccc (talk) 11:51, 26 February 2024 (UTC)

Hi @Chiselinccc, thanks a lot for the message and your willingness to help in the area-- it's great to hear from someone which such long experience with CC and copyleft. Really a lot of the work involves finding plagiarism in articles and cross-refencing with sources, which we have some different automated tools to assist with. If you want to help out, there's the #wpcci channel on the Wikimedia Discord which is pretty active, there's a few different people in there willing to help out and give advice for someone starting out in the area. I've got some rough guides on the matter at User:Moneytrees/CCI guide and User:Moneytrees/CCI Sort-- they might need to be updated a bit but should be pretty accurate still.
One thing though, over the last year I've been trying to get some reforms in the area going-- the workload really isn't sustainable, and processes should be updated and streamlined to try and alleviate the perpetual backlog. User:Moneytrees/Copyright RfC 2023 has some of these ideas-- feel free to comment on the talk about them, because I'd love to get some feedback, especially from someone who's a bit "outside" of all the work.
Thanks again and sorry for the delay, Moneytrees🏝️(Talk) 18:54, 11 March 2024 (UTC)

Question re:Luke Olson CU

Are you able to disclose whether there was an identifiable sock master? Is there an SPI page? Or was it just a “hey they’re not in the US” geolocation thing?

Cheers, RadioactiveBoulevardier (talk) 11:04, 19 March 2024 (UTC)

@RadioactiveBoulevardier No identifiable master, but when checking an account, even if there isn't an exact master you can see indications of intentional disruption/socking. Moneytrees🏝️(Talk) 15:26, 19 March 2024 (UTC)
