On a related topic, you may also be the one to help me with the Governors of Western Australia article. A recent edit removed the word Crown from the heading Governors of Western Australia as a self-governing Crown Colony. I'm curious as to why it was there in the first place. Is this edit correct? Article Licensing
Hi, I've started a drive to get users to multi-license all of their contributions that they've made to either (1) all U.S. state, county, and city articles or (2) all articles, using the Creative Commons Attribution-Share Alike (CC-by-sa) v1.0 and v2.0 Licenses or into the public domain if they prefer. The CC-by-sa license is a true free documentation license that is similar to Wikipedia's license, the GFDL, but it allows other projects, such as WikiTravel, to use our articles. Since you are among the top 2000 Wikipedians by edits, I was wondering if you would be willing to multi-license all of your contributions or at minimum those on the geographic articles. Over 90% of people asked have agreed. For More Information:

To allow us to track those users who muli-license their contributions, many users copy and paste the "{{DualLicenseWithCC-BySA-Dual}}" template into their user page, but there are other options at Template messages/User namespace. It'd be great if you could help bring the other two articles, Test matches in the 19th century (1884 to 1889) and Test matches in the 19th century (1890 to 1900) to featured status, like Test matches in the 19th century (to 1883) is. I've gotten a bit side-tracked onto Brian Close, but would like to work these articles, and Sydney Riot of 1879 to featured status.
You might be interested in the succession boxes that we have on the English and Bangladeshi cricket captains. They would be a good addition to the Aussie captains too. An example is on Len Hutton. I may add some myself. All the best, jguk 20:39, 17 Feb 2005 (UTC)

I noticed you just added John Forrest to Category:History of Western Australia. Are you aware that the article is already in the category via Category:Members of the Western Australian Legislative Assembly, Category:Members of the Western Australian Legislative Council and Category:Premiers of Western Australia, which are all subcategories of Category:History of Western Australia?

Ashes image
Do you still have a vector image of the Ashes obituary? If you do, it would be preferable that you save the image as a png-8 type file. Not only does it compress better, the text is a lot clearer as compared to the .jpeg format. Another thing, since you do upload GFDL licenced files, would you consider uploading images in the future to wikimedia commons:? - I'll explain all file types in detail, as the format conversion isn't the right way to go.
- .gif should be used solely for animations. (there are licensing issues with this format which makes is non-free). So avoid this unless it is an animation.
- .jpg should be used for photographs only. This compresses well if there are many colours in an image. Should not be used for diagrams, line art and other non-photographic content.
- .png is the best filetype for line art, text and non-photographic and non-animation content. Use this for maps, text etc. It compresses better than the .gif for artwork, though .jpg is better than .png for photos. The .png format is of two subtypes:
- png-8 of whose palatte consists of 256 colours &
- png-24, with a much higher colour resolution
- Depending on how much colour your picture has, you can select either the 8 or 24. However, the 24 has a larger file size so use it sparingly; ie only if the 8 gives a poor quality.
- A drawback of the .jpeg format is that if you open the file and save after that, it gets compressed once again. So opening and saving it repeateadly will lead to the image degrading in quality.
- Another point, the original raster/vector image should be saved into the desired file format. Converting from one format to another is practically useless, as it has already been compressed and will be unnecessarily compressed further.
- If you would like a program to upload files to the commons then here's a free program to do so. Please do categorise the image else they would remain orphans and hard to locate.
- Also, there is no need to upload to both, the [en:] wikipedia and commons:. The commons, as its name suggests, is the central depositary of images and your pic will also appear in [en:].
I've categorised your image on commons, and if you want me to delete the two images here on en:, please let me know. For now, the image is fine and I don't think a replacement is absolutely necessary. Regards, =Nichalp (Talk)= 07:54, Jun 2, 2005 (UTC)

I know it's a page you've made some significant contributions to, and am wondering whether you'd be willing to support. The vote is on a knife-edge at the moment, with the one sticking point being whether the letters should stay or go. Personally, I like them there and think they are important to the story. Thanks for your support and help with the Sydney Riot page. Personally I'd list the Ashes on FAC now - but Nichalp has already listed it on Peer Review. Out of def erence to him, I don't intend to nominate it just yet - but will do towards the end of the month. Ideally it'd get on the front page on 21 July - I'd like to leave enough time for it to have two stints on FAC, if necessary, before then.

Land grants in the Swan River Colony
I'd appreciate it if you'd cast a critical eye over Land grants in the Swan River Colony. It's not my best work I'm sorry to say. I'm unhappy with the title, the section headings, my failure to acknowledge the previous owners of the land.... But I had to hatch it now or never.

- Thanks Ian. I agree that it is an interesting subject and should be more widely linked. I am satisfied with the article's completeness, but I still think it lacks polish. Perhaps linking it more prominently will cause it to be edited to a higher standard. I'll try to link it into History of Western Australia.
- I don't know if I can do anything about Bussell family though; I think it is destined to be "a bit lost" until I get around to writing John Bussell, Arthur Bussell, Grace Bussell, John Molloy, Warrior...
- There most definitely should be an article on Mitchell's group settlements. But my to-do list is already indulgently long, so I won't be taking the subject on in the near future.

prisons etc
Hello Ian. I've never been 100% comfortable with categorising penal colonies with prisons. Whilst they both serve somewhat the same purpose, I agree the two aren't directly related. Both deserve mention in a definite list of detention centres, but for very different reasons and during very different times. I always put articles in their most specific category, and I only put them also into more general categories if there is a compelling reason to do so. e.g. I put Walter Lindrum in both Category:Sportspeople of Western Australia and Category:Australian sportspeople because of his national significance. In the case of WA cricketers, my personal preference is to put cricketers into Category:Western Australia cricketers, and to leave them out of the Sportpeople of WA unless they were/are known as sportspeople other than cricketers e.g. There is a sportsperson named Michael Clark in the Western Warriors squad who was previously a Freo Docker.
I am aware that some people think articles on really famous people should be made easy to find by including them in more general categories, and I see you have followed that philosophy by putting Dennis Lillee and a few other big names into Category:Sportspeople of Western Australia. It's not the way I'd do it, but I certainly don't object. Hesperian 04:13, 26 July 2005 (UTC)
- I saw your discussion at User_talk:Sam_Vimes#Australian_cricketers regarding categorisation of articles. Sam and jguk have obviously taken the opposite approach to me. I had a look around for any policy or guidelines on the subject, and I found this on Wikipedia:Categorization:
"An article should not be in both a category and its subcategory, for example Microsoft Office is in Category:Microsoft software, so should not also be in Category:Software."
This is only a guideline, generally accepted by consensus to apply in many cases, but it is enough to convince me to keep doing as I'm doing. Hesperian 23:52, 26 July 2005 (UTC)
One reason why that is only a guideline rather than a rule is that whilst it may be appropriate in most cases, it is not necessarily best to enforce that in all cases. Drew himself gives what he considers suitable counter-examples. With the Australian cricketers category, we effectively have a full index - the other categories are browsing categories. The same happens later down the line - and let's take New Zealand as an example here. Everyone in Category:New Zealand Test captains is also within Category:New Zealand test cricketers and Category:New Zealand cricketers. However, each is useful in its own right. For example, suppose you were searching for Bevan Congdon. In Category:New Zealand cricketers, you could find him straight away. Alternatively, you may be interested in browsing New Zealand test cricketers, and happen upon him. Or, you may be interested in their captains, and happen upon him there, jguk 06:34, 27 July 2005 (UTC)

Hey there, great work with that list! However, there's one problem with it. The over measure has been so inconsistently used throughout time that it's not very useful (someone bowling 677 overs in the 20s bowled more than someone bowling 730 in the 90s, for example), so do you have any reasonably easily accessible source on the number of balls bowled? - Create a redlink to the new sub-page by adding {{FLC}} to the top of the candidate article's talk page (or by adding {{Wikipedia:Featured list candidates/List of Test cricket records}} to WP:FLC)
- The header "=== List of Test cricket records ===" goes at the top of the nomination subpage, above the blurb for the nomination.
- The sub-page is transcluded into Wikipedia:Featured list candidates by adding {{Wikipedia:Featured list candidates/List of Test cricket records}}.

Who reprimanded Peate?
I see you've reverted the article back to refer to "the captain WG Grace". Note my comment on the Ashes discussion page: 'In the report of the original "Ashes" match it is stated: "When Peate returned to the Pavilion he was reprimanded by the captain WG Grace for not allowing his partner at the wicket Charles Studd to get the runs." But Hornby, not Grace, was captain. So, who reprimanded Peate?' It was either the captain, Hornby, or it was Grace, but not "the captain WG Grace". MulgaBill 21:13, 14 August 2005 (UTC)

Thanks for the fixing of the template, and also thanks for the comments about the list. I understand your objection, and am working to resolve them. I really find it difficult to get good criticism on Peer review, so sometimes a first time through a FAC (or FLC in this case) is the only way to get some good perspective, so I can come back later with a better list. As I said before, I find it hard to find the actual books, so I can read them and write about them, but I am trying to fill them up as stubs based on some online reviews of the books I've found. I am used to doing roll backs, usually to deal with vandalism on scn.wiki where I am the founder and bureaucrat - but I never knew you could do what you said. Bridges, Swan River
At what point is it worth making a sep art? I am thinking about the numerous(?) Freo and E Perth bridges and their history, not that I will put it all up tommorrow - but there's some good stuff and I'm wondering whether it deserves a separate art or not. - It's nothing more than a navigational tool for use inside Wikipedia. It's not information that could be of any use to anyone outside this system and therefore hardly worthy of being called Wikipedia's very best work, or representing something that is unique on the Internet.
To say that it's not unique on the internet is to say that there's something else like it somewhere on the internet. As a mathematician who has frequently looked for things on mathematics via the internet for years, I have not found that. Could you please tell me the URL?

The stats included in the table on the ING Cup are from the October 2005 edition of Inside Cricket. What is mean't by the stats is that Justin Langer has scored 2828 runs at 40.40 for Western Australia in the ING cup but it is still true that he has scored 7,023 test runs. re sheep breeds
It is a good question and I'd love to see the answer in a style guide. I grew up living on a farm which had white suffolk rams and we never capitalised is as a breed name, just calling them the "suffolks", even though Suffolk in the UK was where they presumably originally came from. Having been through that entire list of sheep breeds I think 70-75% of them derive from place names, some more obscure than others, so if we want title case for breeds deriving from place names I guess we can do it for all of them. I notice that some of the articles about breeds which have already been created use title case. What do we do for dogs like German Shepherd? St Bernard? etc -- I guess that is the answer. Me too. I was happy with things when I was personally inspecting every edit to every article in my watchlist, because I assumed that everyone was doing the same. Now my watchlist is so big that I only check suspicious-looking edits, and there have been cases where vandalism of an article dear to me has been overlooked for weeks.
It seems to me beyond question that account-less users do far more damage than good. I whole-heartedly endorse point 1. Points 2 and 3 I'm not so sure about. Talk 03:13, 28 October 2005 (UTC)

Hi Ian,
Nice article.
My article on Robert Bush includes the following: "In April of that year [1893], he played in the first ever inter-colonial cricket match, between Western Australia and Victoria". This is contradicted by Intercolonial cricket in Australia, and so is presumably wrong. Any chance you might have some insight into how to correct it?

Thanks for your suggestion, Ian. The problem, as you imply, is how to define what is included. Going through the cricket categories might be a good start though. That would be very easy, and I'd be happy to do it, if we have a list of those categories somewhere. But I don't know how to generate the list of categories automatically. By the way, you should be careful how you phrase that issue: Connell was found not guilty of fixing the race, but guilty of obstruction of justice during the investigation. Ian,
It would be incorrect to call it Boycott's team when he was only a player. It is ordinarily used only if he was the captain of the team (or maybe if he did extraordinarily well, but I can't think of a good example for any team being called after a player). For example, when you say 'Mark Taylor's team', you refer to the Australian team between 1993 and 1999, and not anytime between 1989 and 1993.
