I can't really take credit for the image, perhaps you can help me with what the license should be? Perhaps I may need to remove it.... I took a photo of a sign within Kings Park, Perth, and did some digital manipulation of the image. Not sure how that affects the copyright. I'm not sure if I can claim that is my own creation when it is based on an existing image. How did Andy Warhol get away with the Campbell's soup for example? How much do you need to change and existing image for it to be acceptable? I know that with music there is a maximum sample size allowed, but don't know how artwork should be treated. Thanks. I've gone back to the original photo I took and it does have an artist credited. The artists name is R. Wallery. Would hate to think I'm abusing his intellectual property rights.
BTW are you the same Ian Brown that I saw on placeopedia.com? I've added quite a few links for WA so far, but seem to be one of only a few on there. WA is pretty good for image quality in Google Earth - if that wasn't you - you may want to have a look? Although it's not affiliated with wikipedia, the data points it collects are available free if wikipedia can make use of them.

Oh dear just wasted an hour that I'll never get back! Thought with the copyright issue I'd try and do a serpent mouse-freehand. I'm really unsure if it's worth the bandwidth, I think the fake brickwork might have been a filter too far, it's on my page...
Ah well it kept me out of trouble for an hour :-) I think the original image should probably be removed - don't really have the expertise to go any further with it. Captaincy Succession Box

Hello. Thanks for dropping by to my talkpage. I understand your method of ordering the captains, but then I believe it is in the order of being "capped" as captain, rather than succession in the strict sense. As in Shane Warne and Adam Gilchrist were captain for a series while Steve Waugh and Ricky Ponting were off injured, hence they are included. But this should imply the ODI succession S.Waugh-Warne-Waugh-Ponting and Test succession Waugh-Ponting-Gilchrist-Ponting, because Warne and Gilchrist interrupted the "reign" of S.Waugh and Ponting so to speak. So should S.Waugh and Ponting have two boxes each to show that they had two "separate" periods of captaincy. Much as say, Michael Schumacher, Alain Prost, Ayrton Senna did not have one "continuous" reign as the Formula One world champion? Regards, Blnguyen 01:22, 20 December 2005 (UTC)

Thank you very much for your mail. I'm sorry to take a few days to reply, but I wanted some time to think it over.

First, I'm honoured to be asked. However, I don't think I can accept at the moment, simply because I'm already spending more time on Wikipedia than I should. Much as I would welcome the extra tools, I also see adminship as carrying an obligation to help out with the necessary administrative chores. I don't think it would be right to become an admin and then leave the work to others, only using the extra power for my own purposes! I'm not ruling it out for ever, but I don't think I can devote time to being an active administrator at the moment.

In previous incarnations of my talk page, users had started new topics under third level headings, or simply by ruling a dividing line. This made the TOC ugly and inaccurate, so I decided to suppress it. My current talk page (which I will shortly archive) is much better behaved, and I suppose a TOC would be helpful. Sean, according to WP:CP#Fair_use_claims_needing_a_second_opinion your derived image is a copyright violation, so I guess that means we'll need to delete it. I can do that if you'd like. As far as the articles are concerned, we could use the photo of the sign instead, which would be OK - it just needs a copyright tag from you, such as {{GFDL}} or {{PD-self}} -- Ian ≡ talk 01:05, 30 December 2005 (UTC)

Yagan again

I think Yagan is almost ready for peer review now. There are still a few red-links, most of which could be knocked on the head pretty easily. My main concern is the article has gotten pretty long; the length might count against it at FAC, but splitting the article might result in two article neither of which are interesting enough to bring to FAC. Do you think it should be split? The other loose end is the alleged site of Yagan's postcranial remains; I know exactly where it is now. A map and/or a photo would be nice. Great! I can't give an address, but I can do better: I'll email three PDFs showing maps of three overlapping Aboriginal heritage sites:
  1. Site 17838, an historical site entitled "Yagan skirmish";
  2. Site 3932, a "skeletal material / burial" site entitled "Yagan";
  3. Site 17840, a "scarred tree" site within Site 3932.
I believe that the scarred tree is associated with Yagan, but I can't remember why I think so; possibly I am wrong. I think it would be too much to ask for the scarred tree to be the tree that Yagan's head was smoked in. The Department of Indigenous Affairs website has an online Aboriginal Heritage Inquiry System, which will let you zoom in to slightly more detail than these PDFs, but it doesn't give any further information about the sites. The only way to get further information on the sites is to make an appointment with the Department of Indigenous Affairs' Heritage Liaison Officer to view the Site Files and Survey Reports. I am not quite obsessive enough to take that step.
I don't really know what to expect from the site. I suppose it might be fenced off. Or possibly you'll find that it is just another boring piece of sandplain.
Re FAC, I'm in favour of the long-winded route: informal peer review via the notice board; formal peer review, then FAC.

Image tagging issues

Ian, we're having a problem with some of the Australian crown copyright-fair dealing-fair use images getting accidentally deleted because the image bots are tagging for deletion any image without a copyright tag. Though the images already have the appropriate information, it's not in a template, so they're getting caught in with the chaff.

I noticed that you were the one who created the PD-Australia template, and because I have no clue how to create such a nicely formatted one, I was wondering if you'd be able to do the same for these images. This image shows a photograph taken in Australia before 1955. Under Australian law, all photographs taken in Australia before 1955 are in the public domain. This image is in the public domain under both [[Australian copyright law]] and [[US copyright law]]. {{PD}}

However, I doubt the NLA and Handbook ones are going to pass muster with the copyright nazis. Apparently copyright holders do not have the right to authorise the use of their own images at Wikipedia, or something like that. Since I don't have a PhD in copyright law, this whole business is beyond my understanding so I will just give up on it I think. Adam 07:48, 3 January 2006 (UTC)

I've been doing some work on bowling and it's related articles including bowling ball bowling pin ten-pin bowling etc. I decided that a template would be a good idea and template:bowling was the logical choice. I noticed you italicised the quotations and removed the blockquotes. WP:MOS#Quotations says (and I'll break the rule here ;-)) Use quotation marks or indentations to distinguish quotations from other text. To the best of my knowledge, and the articles linked to his cricinfo profile. In between sending my own messages to Drew, I noticed suggestions on your next collab - I reckon you guys would be good on York or Northam, for what I have seen the arts are but pin pricks on what could be done.

As for me - I am thinking of dropping my current interest in cleaning up my tassie stuff for Swan Coastal Plain and Darling Scarp work - they are both very small and unsubstantial compared to what they could be as well.

In their current state the articles have nothing in them - when you get into the , environmental,19th century loci of power (look at drews contribs, and he's well fired up on some of the info well integrated into understanding some of the stuff of the rural families), and the rural ok ness, and the current rural not ok mess, and olives, and the excuse for weekend drives for viewing the remnants, and you've got it made  :) SatuSuro 13:33, 22 January 2006 (UTC)

Place names

It was agreed yonks ago on the AWNB that all Australian towns and cities would be given a pre-disambiguated title with the form Town, State. I'm not aware of any Australian policy regarding other geographic entities like rivers and lakes, but maybe there is one. Globally, the policy is not to disambiguate unless necessary, and to disambiguate with parenthesis, but it is widely accepted that individual regions are allowed to come up with their own policy. Every now and then someone from elsewhere makes a move, but it always gets reverted, e.g. someone once moved Avon River, Western Australia to Avon River (Western Australia), but nixie moved it back again. Hi again Ian - sorry for being slow getting back - bit hectic in RL this week... Anyways to business - I didn't come across any information where Robin Miller and Mr Dicks had any children - she died only a short while after they married as far as I could find out. To be honest it's probably a library job that one - I got fascinated by her after seeing a memorial to her in Jandakot Airport, and thought she deserved an article but there were only a handful of sites out there with any relevant info (in fact a few contradicted dates so I hope I chose the right ones...). However as I said, doesn't seem like there is a link from the sailor to Robin - but maybe somewhere else in Mr Dicks' family?? Ian what do you reckon about a family tree/list of the duracks? I distinctly remember meeting one of the younger duracks at uwa in the late 1970's, but stumped as to which part of the family she was?

It would be worth it, I reckon, considering the older deceased generation are important in the formation of ideas about the Kimberley and the outback and all that stuff... any near relative a keen geneologist? nudge nudge? Wow, the nearest I get to any fame like that is that my fathers collection had over 10 objects known to have been John Forrest's were in our house for 40 years... no blood or marriage connections to fame otherwise!         • According to this LISWA catalogue entry, the photo of Hawke was probably taken in 1859, which would mean it isn't in the public domain. Any reason to believe it was pre-1856? Hello Ian. There are "for more coverage of cricket, see the Cricket portal" messages on some cricket pages. Is there any criteria for which pages include this? Do they apply generally? I'm just wondering, because I am in the process of creating two portals myself, Portal:Swimming and Portal:Eurovision Song Contest, and I don't want to inapporpriately linkspam some "advertisements" to them. Also, I am trying to get Swimming World Swimmers of the Year, which includes many notable Australian swimmers to Featured List status at Wikipedia:Featured list candidates/Swimming World Swimmers of the Year, and seeing as it is similar to the Wisden list, I am wondering if you could give me some help and feedback.   • Thanks, I've figured it out - I was going to have to joint winners on separate lines so that some cells were bigger than the others. Also, seeing as you nearly missed DaGizza's RfA, I've noticed a useful tool which keeps track of the RfA "scoreboard", which means that you don't have to navigate through the massive RfA page. I added it to a page of my choice by linking to {{User:Dragons flight/RFA summary}} so that I don't have to go to RfA to be informed of the new nominations everyday. Watson

Nothing biographical, I'm afraid (and my library is certainly not vast). His name gets the odd mention in a few books, half the time with respect to his work with the Dominion League; half the time with respect to his later work in the Legislative Council.

All I can tell you is he was born in WA to Victorian parents who emigrated to Southern Cross during the 1890s goldrush; he was involved in the Dominion League, and was selected to be part of the group to take the secession petition to the UK; he was later a member of the Legislative Council during which he distinguished himself in opposing controls: rent controls, price controls, etc. ; and later still he became a member of the Sunday Times board of directors.

Here's a good quote from A Fine Country To Starve In:

"... but the driving force behind the movement was a thirty-year-old accountant, H. K. Watson, who first served the Dominion League as treaturer, but soon became secretary, and during Chandler's frequent absences from the League's meetings, chairman. Watson's office became the effective headquarters for the League. Pamphlets, articles and interminable letters to the editor poured from his office in unflagging profusion. As a one-man propaganda effort it has seldom been bettered in Perth history."

Yes. In fact I like to take some of the credit for it. Shortly after the AU-US free trade agreement kicked in the new copyright laws, I contacted Col Choat and suggested that as Battye had died in 1954, his work was in the public domain and it would be great to get some of it put on gutenberg.au. He initially disputed that works by authors who died in 1954 were in the public domain, but I managed to convince him they were by pointing him to certain documents on the Copyright Australia website. He was very happy because he had already keyboarded a number of Miles Franklin works and had thought he wouldn't be allowed to put them up for another twenty years. I don't know nothing about Jorge de Menezes. The "Dauphin Map" of 1836 is purportedly a Portuguese map of northern Australia. It is said to have been made from at least three earlier maps, with the part showing the north west coast said to come from maps made by Gomes de Sequeira in 1525, "and the part from King Sound to Shark Bay by others who followed him a few years later". But the Dauphin map only goes down as far as Shark Bay, so does not show the Abrolhos. Snottygobble 11:53, 7 April 2006 (UTC)

The name Moondyne is ok, but you erred in creating a new account. We can only move a user account to a blank username. There is a workaround however: login as user:Moondyne, and place a request on Wikipedia:Changing username to change Moondyne to an available account username. Renaming deletes the old username, so Moondyne will be free once again. Next, login as User:Ianbrown and place a request to transfer Ianbrown to Moondyne.
