Howdy!

Recently I was welcoming new users, and well welcomed a user who later was found to be a sock puppet, anyway, you mentioned that you could reset wikipedia account passwords. I was intrigued, as if you reset the account password, and the user has no email enabled would that mean you would lose access to you account? (note: this is not in regard to what you did, I ask in a general case). Also is this ability accessable to admins or does one need to be a 'Crat? Oh and it's nice to meet you. :) Phgao 21:37, 5 October 2007 (UTC)

Commons picture

I thought you may like to look at this on Commons. I uploaded it after making huge changes (all I took from another website was the outline of Australia - which I cut down to Western Australia) regarding our conversation earlier regarding map copyrights. The outline's purpose was actually geological surveys, nothing to do with WIN licensing. Auroranorth 12:37, 8 October 2007 (UTC)

Reply - thank you for your appreciation!

Thank you for your kind words, if you remember them! Im glad if anyone appreciated the articles i wrote when i was active here on Wikipedia. I wrote about things i'm interested in and that are hard to find if you can't read my language, as i would like to read about these things from country's whos language i can't read! I'm sorry, but it does not seem i will return. I liked participating to wikipedia, but it took valuable time from what i really should be doing, and it is easy to be adictive. But as a thank you for your appreciation, i will write, or, at least start, some articles today. I can't promise they will all be that good, but at least they will be an entry for others who perhaps have the knowledge to finnish them, and i will provode sources (swedish ones, i'm sorry!) for them to be finnished, and leave them to wikipedia! Once again, thank you for appreciation! If i do return to wikipedia someday, i promise i will contact you. --Aciram 13:24, 8 October 2007 (UTC)

After much work...

Yay... probably the only place anywhere which has this information in present form :P The source for most of it was David Black but I found a few errors, so those have been rectified. Now I've just got to decide exactly what form they'll take - I can imagine the best way to do it would involve quite a few redirects as in some cases the electorate was really just renamed or in some other way is a direct follow-on. The early Goldfields/Murchison electorates can probably be dealt with in a single article, I'm thinking. Any ideas are welcome (that goes for anyone else reading this too :) Orderinchaos 11:02, 10 October 2007 (UTC)

Hi there from your residential random checking device - yes indeed - goldfields trade unions (or onions if you prefer) is a long projected article which may eventually see sunrise next year the way things are going :| - so if you are doing goldfields electorates - i for one would be most interested - as it would link to the goldfields unions for sure - greetings fellows met in the night - off to the next random edit SatuSuro 13:24, 10 October 2007 (UTC)

Todt

No, thank you! I had other plans for last night, but on seeing you'd returned to bestow upon us a plant article, I was inspired to write Emil Todt. The only reference I had to hand was Hall (1979) which said that nothing is known of him except that he illustrated some of Mueller's Atlas of Eucalypts. That was in essence my first draft, and I was doubtful if the man was notable enough for the article to survive. Just before I posted I googled him, and discovered a vast amount of biographical information. Hesperian 00:46, 24 October 2007 (UTC)

I'll check B&B tonight, but I find it exceedingly hard to believe I wouldn't have included that if it was there. Plus the senator was a "Mac" not a "Mc", and was for Queensland when our McDonald was living in Victoria. Hesperian 05:40, 29 October 2007 (UTC)

Block durations

Whilst i do not agree with his actions, i think like a 48-hr block would have been more appropriate, but i trust your judgement, and i didnt look at all of the "incidents". It sucks to be an admin at times like these. Obviously, i do recall him engaging in some "bad activities" [2] but under the blocking policy i dont think hes ever like wrongfully accused someone of vandalism. Then on the other hand, you could claim it was disruptive, and well we all seem to think hes done that before. I think to get the issue across a 48-hr block would have been enough, but 7 days isnt excessive. Im not going to pursue the matter, because if i were in your position, i wouldnt like it. You are doing what you think is best, and the community trusts you. Twenty Years 15:01, 4 November 2007 (UTC)

Not to butt in, but I looked at the warnings and the editing diffs from the new users. As an independent (non-Australia projects) editor, those warnings were indeed disruptive. Considering the user in question, I think the block was completely justified. Unfortunately, based on my past interactions with Auroranorth, I doubt it will be enough. IvoShandor 15:08, 4 November 2007 (UTC)
In no way did i say that they werent. A block is justified and there is no doubt about that, its the length that was the issue. Twenty Years 15:16, 4 November 2007 (UTC)

Robert Young (longevity claims researcher)

Why am I here? Because I respect your opinion. And in regards to this article:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Articles_for_deletion/Robert_Young_%28longevity_claims_researcher%29

I see it as a case already for 'deletion review.' Why? Because I'm being judged on being an 'academic,' which is not the current claim to 'notability.' I claim to be notable as an expert on the world's oldest people, which has been recognized through Guinness World Records, BBC, CNN, etc.

Now, let me say this: the very field of gerontology is 'fairly new'. The Gerontology Society of America only started in 1945. The very gerontology department at Georgia State University only started in 1973. Further, I find it incredulous to judge me based on 'academic' accomplishment, for several reasons:

1. I was well-known BEFORE I enrolled in the current program. I am a pioneer. One of my classes had an article with me in it.

2. The field I'm in is very new for academia, but is primed for growth. A search for the word 'supercentenarian' in Academic Search Premier shows that all nine articles date to the 2000's. And while there were a few mentions prior as 'super-centenarians' in the 1970's, that earlier movement didn't really take off. This one is. In the past seven years, the governments of major countries such as the USA, France, etc have moved to fund research in this area.

To be fair, OK, if this article is deleted, it's not the end of the world. But if every biography in the English Wikipedia were held to this standard being employed here, half would be gone. Guitarists in minor rock bands, minor college football players, etc are littered across Wikipedia. And to claim 'local fame' when I'm cited internationally is really unfair.Ryoung122 15:49, 9 November 2007 (UTC)

Shirley Strickland

Er, some of her categories seem a bit contentious, don't they. For one thing, being an unsuccessful candidate hardly qualifies one as a politician. (Or does it?) Then, the article says the cause of Shirley's death is "unascertainable". So why second-guess the coroner twice with speculative ailments. I've heard separate speculations including self-harm, but accept the coroner's more open opinion. (Do we have a category of unascertainale deaths?!) Also (pout, pout) --why can't Aussies have 'medallists', not 'medalists'? Cheers Bjenks 15:45, 12 November 2007 (UTC)

Featured List of the Day Experiment

There have been a series of proposals to initiate a Featured List of the Day on the main page. Numerous proposals have been put forth. After the third one failed, I audited all WP:FL's in order to begin an experiment in my own user space that will hopefully get it going. Today, it commences at WP:LOTD. Afterwards I created my experimental page, a new proposal was set forth to do a featured list that is strikingly similar to my own which is to do a user page experimental featured list, but no format has been confirmed and mechanism set in place. I continue to be willing to do the experiment myself and with this posting it commences. Please submit any list that you would like to have considered for list of the day in the month of January 2008 by the end of this month to WP:LOTD and its subpages. You may submit multiple lists for consideration.--TonyTheTiger (t/c/bio/WP:LOTD) 17:47, 15 November 2007 (UTC)

Micro/macro

It seems that Apollo is continuing to revert to microeconomic only, he is unable to accept including both micro and macro, and from his insistance on this single version and accepting no compromises, I think he is going to continue to insist on his specific version. Hi there Moondyne. We still use caps for Fifth and Sixth Tests I think. Also, if you have a spare minute can you take a look at Arthur Morris? I have had a few complaints at FAC from two American reviewers who think that the article is a bit too technical.. I'm not sure how to act on that one though, unless I engage in hyperbole (not good, obviously), Blnguyen (bananabucket) 04:17, 21 November 2007 (UTC)

Some personal opinions.

1st off, I believe if Carcharoth wants to get Robert unblocked, he should be going to Maxim instead of BrownHairedGirl since it was Maxim who blocked Robert.

And secondly, BrownHairedGirl made it so only admins can post on RYoung122's talk page. Her intent wasn't to make it so regular users can't post on his talk, but mainly so Robert cannot post on his talk (at least as far as I know). I guess, logically, by doing that, she would have to weigh in on the fact that other non-admins that may want to post on his talk page cannot.

On the other hand, I may not know what gain she gets from preventing Robert to post on his talk.

1 alternate suggestion to that is request a way for admins to block users from posting on their own talk page (an option). Perhaps we could request that. If you want to request that I'd support that as well. Otherwise people like me would just have to find other means to post if we wanted to post on his talk. Neal (talk) 06:02, 21 November 2007 (UTC).

Neal, admins can protect a page so only established users can edit it or only admins can edit it. As RY is/was an established user, there was no point in using the 1st option as he was already circumventing the block by continuing to post stuff unrelated to his block on his talk page. So option 2 was the correct protection option. —Moondyne 06:24, 21 November 2007 (UTC)
Ah, so I guess someone should have already pointed that Robert was by default violating his block by posting off-topic stuff in the first place. Hmm, perhaps you can inform Carcharoth of this, since no one seemed to brough this premise up. Neal (talk) 06:43, 21 November 2007 (UTC).

I thought I had asked Maxim earlier. I now see I was thinking of the StanPrimmer block. See here. Neal, if you want to post at User talk:Ryoung122, post a request at WP:ANI, and see if an uninvolved admin will agree to unprotecting the page to allow you to post there. Carcharoth (talk) 15:26, 21 November 2007 (UTC)

No I don't think I will be doing that.

Anyways, I consider the situation between Robert and BrownHairedGirl to be just about over. Carcharoth's debate that BrownHairedGirl should remove the block for his talk page is pretty much finished since 1) she said the answer is no, and 2) Robert Young now has both Moondyne's and Carcharoth's e-mail. Therefore, if a 3rd or 4th admin were to post on his talk, he would have to consider e-mailing Robert and paste the e-mail conversation if that's the plan. Therefore, the only thing left is Maxim's block. In other words, there's no point to continue with the "appeal to BrownHairedGirl," except maybe she will re-block Robert Young if Robert is ever unblocked by Maxim or a committee.

As far as what BrownHairedGirl said about how does she feel about Robert ever getting unblocked, can I just point out that it's very possible for 2 users on Wikipedia that don't get along to not even have to deal with each other? Robert's interests and contributions on Wikipedia are very narrow: he contributes to supercentenarians. Suppose Robert joins or takes part in WikiProject: Ireland, then I'm sure chaos brakes lose between the 2 and ArbCom will have to settle everything in their everyday disputes. As far as what BrownHairedGirl said about Robert continuing to do is walled garden, 0 citations, and COI, etc. (after if he ever gets unblocked) - I'm sure she could send the meanest admins she could think of to have them watch over and bully RYoung122 about policy.

It seems that Carcharoth is the admin who was the most faith in Robert. And the fact that he is willing to work with Robert on some of the articles is a help. In other words, Carcharoth is Robert's last resort on Wikipedia (with the exception of ArbCom of course). Therefore, if Robert fails to get along with Carcharoth, then I would consider him to be a failed Wikipedia user. Neal (talk) 22:16, 21 November 2007 (UTC).

WA Inc.

I was thinking that it would be good to have maybe a paragraph about Burke's reign as Premier, and a couple of paragraphs about the WA Inc scandal to explain why he became persona non grata to begin with. I guess all I'd be looking for is just a short summary of the scandal, Burke and Grill's role in it, and the repercussions for them both. It doesn't really need much more than that, I think - anything else could go in WA Inc as a further information link. Rebecca (talk) 00:59, 23 November 2007 (UTC)

Like the refimprove tag, I don't believe the bias tag is needed either (Skyring/Pete seems to insist on it). No attempt has been made to fix supposed issues. I don't see any issues with the article, I think it is not biased, NPOV, and neutral. Your review and hopeful tag removal would be appreciated. Thanks. Timeshift (talk) 03:53, 24 November 2007 (UTC)

Oh my gosh

You know I am always keeping an eye out for online databases to add to my resources page. Here's one I don't think I'll be adding:

Have a look at http://www.toiletmap.gov.au/. It hosts The National Public Toilet Map, a component of the Australian federal government's National Continence Management Strategy. For those who like a personalised site, one can create a account with their "My Toilet Map" service.

I had to look thrice before deciding it was serious.

Footnotes

It isn't very hard to scroll down to the bottom of the page to view the appropriate footnote, and I've always found it much more informative to have the order of any changes during the parliament in the order that they actually occurred, rather than in a random, confusing order designated by the software. If it's that helpful to have the automated links, we need a bugfix to have an option to stop MediaWiki randomising the footnotes. Rebecca (talk) 08:35, 29 November 2007 (UTC)

Hello. Thanks for the chart. When we worked on Bradman, we excluded current players - one reason was because most (human - Bradman was a monster, in the nicest possible way) players experience a fall-off in performance before the end of their careers, making the comparison invidious, as with including the Andy Ganteaumes of this world, lol. --Dweller (talk) 13:35, 29 November 2007 (UTC)

One Day International

Hi, Moondyne! I've verified that most of the links you included in your request have been changed. What's bothering me is this one. I've checked a random sample of those and can't find a wikilink to "One Day Internationals" in the articles. I believe that a template I changed still hasn't propagated down to all the articles, but I'm not positive about that. In any case, besides that issue, they all seem to be done. Sad indeed.
I like it when I message someone who hasn't edited in hours, and they respond immediately. I like to presume that that means they have been online all along, working on good solid content, composing prose, cross-referencing against other articles, constantly previewing, but ever seeking one last improvement before pushing that "save" button.

Potter's House reverts

Darren, in future, don't endlessly revert vandalism, it honestly gets you nowhere and doesn't paint you in the best light. If the other side isn't listening, explain your position on his talk page and then if you need to, ask an admin to intervene or post a message at WP:AIV. User:121.218.65.141 has had at least 15 edits reverted but no message on his talk page - this makes it hard for a reviewing admin to decipher the dispute. Anyway, he's now warned. If you need any help in the future let me know. —Moondyne 08:02, 13 December 2007 (UTC)

Hi there, the reason is I have contact with the person outside wikipedia and have asked him to leave the articles alone. The same user had been warned already under another IP and user account which has been going on for months. I have also contacted other editors by private email for assistance.
Thank you though, I agree with what you say. I like many others are trying to do the right thing. I am greatful for any assistance. Thank you.Darrenss (talk) 10:59, 13 December 2007 (UTC)

Why delete a link like that. Please explain why the AOG page has probly over 50 links whereas the Potter's House is only allowed (by Darren who is an ex Potter's House member with a bias) to have 3-4??

Why did you label that link as spam? It seems that there is a bias against the Church having links. Is this religious discrimination? Why are not other Pentecostal Churches on Wikipedia only allowed to have 3-4 links? Why is it that DarrenSS who is an ex member seems to be the sole authority over the page who can allow or dissallow links or imput. There is no reason why the Wayman Mitchell link or thre Pottersclub link should be banned. The reason Darren wants them off Wiki is because they have strong arguments that refute his link "firstplubline." By having and allowing both link for and against people can make up their own mind, but with only 3-4 links which don't deal with the harsh accusations put forth by Darren in the article, it makes the article biased. 121.218.65.141 (talk) 02:01, 16 December 2007 (UTC)

Why would http://www.pottersclub.com or http://www.waymanmitchell be "banned" in Darrens words, when these contain much CFM material? Why am I seen as a spammer for including these links. 121.218.65.141 (talk) 13:36, 19 December 2007 (UTC)

Repeating my own point from Talk:Potter's House Christian Fellowship on 24 September (nearly 3 months ago), the two domain names were investigated and found to be registered by the same individual, who is believed to be a lay church member in Australia. There is no indication they had the backing or support of the church (which has its own websites) and hence fails Wikipedia's external links guideline, which does have a limited scope for primary sourcing of non-controversial or self-identified information but takes a fairly strong line on fan sites (an issue only normally encountered in articles related to music). I have reviewed the actions taken by Moondyne and they appear to me to be correct, and also in the spirit of maintaining the quality and integrity of the encyclopaedia. Orderinchaos 03:01, 23 December 2007 (UTC)

Potter's House articles

Just thought I would drop you a line. The same user under the anon is most likely still going to be a problem. He has continued to undo the edits on the three articles.Darrenss (talk) 04:08, 22 December 2007 (UTC)

What is wrong with the inclusion of such links, and why is DarrenSS, who obviously has a bias against CFM, allowed to continually distrupt the growth of such pages? 121.218.65.141 (talk) 13:13, 22 December 2007 (UTC)

Bias can work both ways. Your bias in promoting the church is obvious. How about reverting back to encyclopaedic style for a start. —Moondyne 14:21, 22 December 2007 (UTC)

Please explain why you are disallowing the inclusion of links? Is it simply because Darrenss contacted you first? What reason do you give for the constant deletion of the links? Critical links should always be allowed, but are biased, unless other links answering them are allowed, thus the reason for the deletion of critical links that Darrenss places there, and then disallows any counter argument. If you truly want neutrality, allow ALL links, not just critical or positive! 121.218.65.141 (talk) 15:10, 22 December 2007 (UTC)

Image Copyright problem
Image Copyright problem

Thanks for uploading Image:Lara400.jpg. I noticed that the file's description page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you did not create this file yourself, you will need to specify the owner of the copyright. If you obtained it from a website, then a link to the website from which it was taken, together with a restatement of that website's terms of use of its content, is usually sufficient information. However, if the copyright holder is different from the website's publisher, their copyright should also be acknowledged.

As well as adding the source, please add a proper copyright licensing tag if the file doesn't have one already. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then the {{GFDL-self}} tag can be used to release it under the GFDL. If you believe the media meets the criteria at Wikipedia:Non-free content, use a tag such as {{non-free fair use in|article name}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:Image copyright tags#Fair use. See Wikipedia:Image copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have specified their source and tagged them, too. You can find a list of files you have uploaded by following this link. Unsourced and untagged images may be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If the image is copyrighted under a non-free license (per Wikipedia:Fair use) then the image will be deleted 48 hours after 02:58, 28 December 2007 (UTC). If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. —Remember the dot (talk) 02:58, 28 December 2007 (UTC)

Would you (and anyone else reading this - Gnangarra? Melburnian?) mind please having a look at the beginnings of a table in my sandbox, and letting me know whether you can see a better way to layout the information therein, and/or anything you think should be omitted or included? At completion the table will contain 239 entries, so I want to get the layout right sooner rather than later. Cheers, Hesperian 13:24, 29 December 2007 (UTC)

Suggestion added. —Moondyne 04:55, 30 December 2007 (UTC)
Thanks, you inspired me to test a nifty way of getting section headings within a table, and it works! I get section headings and a TOC, and even section editing hooks, without having to split the table, and hence without having to hardcode the column widths. But for some reason align="left" doesn't work, so I can't check out if the section headings look better left-aligned. Hesperian 11:04, 30 December 2007 (UTC)
I added the alignment code
style="text-align:left" and  style="text-align:right"
to the two headings center is default anyway. Gnangarra 12:50, 30 December 2007 (UTC)
That does look better. Section editing was what I was trying to achieve. Good work team. —Moondyne 13:12, 30 December 2007 (UTC)
Yeah, thanks team. After all that I think I like it centred better (but I have section numbering turned off - I suppose I should turn it on and have a look).
I'm very happy with the section headings, TOC and edit hooks though. I'll go with that for now. We can always have an edit war after I've posted the list. ;-) Hesperian 02:51, 31 December 2007 (UTC)

I don't suppose you have a copy of this to hand? I'm trying to get my eyes on pages 277-8. Everything is so much harder when you're on holidays! Hesperian 10:57, 1 January 2008 (UTC)

Why I love Wikipedia; an essay by Hesperian, who is prone to the odd rant:

All I knew of the origin of the word "abrolhos" was that most writers reported that it was a contraction of the Portuguese phrase abro olhos ("open your eyes"), but that one of my sources, citing a pers. comm., claimed that Landgate's Geographic Naming Committee favours a different interpretation, that in the Portuguese language of the time abrolhos meant "spiked obstructions". I had no clear idea of how to pursue this any further, and wasn't even aware that my treatment of the topic was inadequate.

Then, for no particular reason, I snatch Ancient Landmarks off my shelf for bathtub reading. To my surprise, on page 5 I read the "spiked obstructions" claim, attributed to one John Forsyth, but citing Voyage to Disaster. Lacking a copy of VtD, I Google Books it, and am presented with a snippet view that yields a fraction of a citation: "Forsyth, John. Visit of the yacht". On googling this I discover that all the information I could possibly want on the subject is sitting in a 1957 article on the Grootenbroeck, published in an issue of Early Days which just happens to be on my bookshelf!

Thus the truth unfolds. What a rush! That'll feed the addiction for another month or so. My only disappointment is that I can't get access to The Voyage of Pyrard de Laval, where the false etymology was first exposed. But I guess that is the nature of the addiction - one always wants more.

It turns out my library has a copy too. I'll grab it. Hesperian 01:00, 2 January 2008 (UTC)
