Daniel Yarnton Mills[edit]

Hi. I've enjoyed your contributions to chess articles, both the updates and additions you've made to existing articles and the articles you have created. I have a question about Daniel Yarnton Mills. The article says that "He also represented Great Britain in all the cable matches between Great Britain and the United States (1896-1911)", but the article also says that he died in 1904. Editing List of chess books[edit]

I notices that you recently edited List of chess books, A-L. For me, if I am logged in, that page loads extremely slowly, usually 35-40 seconds. If I am not logged in it is fast. Have you noticed that problem? Bubba73 (talk), 17:08, 21 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Template positions[edit]

How does this [1] (and similar) improve anything? Moving the template makes the page longer and create unhelpful white space at end of article. I'd change it back but you may have some reason that I cannot think of. SunCreator (talk) 01:48, 24 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

May I suggest those samples are placing the template at random rather then for any good reason and therefore changing them to be like the random sample is really of no use (or indeed of negative use). SunCreator (talk) 01:58, 24 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

AfD[edit]

I'm probably not going to take part in the List of chess openings named after animals AfD. But I think a list of openings named after people is justified - that person usually had something to do with the development or popularity of the opening/variation. A list of openings named after places is almost as justified since it is usually named after the location that it debuted or the country of the person involved. Ones named after animals seem to pretty arbitrary except for a few such as the Hedgehog. I think it is hard to justify the one about animals. At the Bernard Parham and Loren Brigham Laceste pages, I've proposed that they should be submitted as AfD, but find the regulations surrounding the process rather confusing. There are doubtless other players' pages that might get the same treatment, but Parham isn't even as strong a player as I was (~2205 FIDE) and having an opening line (of doubtful value) named after him hardly constitutes a prima facie case of notability per se. about "Nonna Karakashyan" article[edit]

Hello Mrs.Hudson, Thank you for adding info on Mrs. Nonna Karakashyan daughter, Narine Karakashian (they got different spelling in their documents after moving to the US). I had to undo your spelling changes Karakashyan-->Karakashian as being incorrect but added "Her last name may also be spelled as Karakashian" to reflect spelling variation at FIDE site/documents. Currently, there are 2 pages "Nonna Karakashyan" and "Nonna Karakashian". I could cancel redirection "Nonna Karakashyan" --> "Nonna Karakashian" and set "Nonna Karakashian" --> "Nonna Karakashyan" instead. Would you please take a look? I am new to Wiki as a contributor, and not sure if I did everything correctly. Please let me know if I can be of any help in articles about Armenian chessplayers. Dear Mrs.Hudson, like I said, I reversed your redirection; now "Nonna Karakashian" is just a pointer to "Nonna Karakashyan". So, we have 1 article only. About spelling: this is not a first time when Armenian nationals have various spelling of "-ian" and "-yan" in the documents. However, in this case correct spelling is "Karakashyan" (according to Mrs.Karakashyan's passport; you can contact her if necessary via her website or email mentioned in her FIDE card). Watchlist[edit]

You likely use the Chess watchlist, but did you know there is another version that works in a different way(based on the Chess Project being tagged on the talk page) - the downside is it does not cover talk pages and that it takes you to the toolserve to see the list but otherwise it's a nice alternative and deals with situations of article renames which for the normal version depends on the Index of chess articles being up to date. Spacing has no agreed-upon convention[edit]

Hi, your edit here, has resulted in my thoughts laid down here.

Without an agreed-upon convention, I really think it is an exercise in futility for editors to make changes as they see fit, then revert other editors how "they" saw fit! There needs to be a convention, and there currently is none. (And that goes as well for 0-0-0 versus O-O-O, too. [I have a particularly interesting unexpressed view on that too: I think "O-O-O" should be reserved for games prior to the 20th century, otherwise "0-0-0"! Besides being consistent w/ FIDE 0s, 0-0-0 looks "modern", whereas O-O-O looks "antique-ish" – and that's cool!])

I hope you don't take offense. Anyway, I think my point is valid: It is senseless to edit & revert, ad infinitum, without a principle to go by, only each editor's different "tastes". Ok, Ihardlythinkso (talk) 04:08, 3 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

move/rename[edit]

Articles that are moved/renamed that are in index of chess articles need to be changed there too. The reason is that the related changes of the Index article goes by the name listed, so if it isn't updated it will list changes to the redirect page instead of the actual article. Query (David Pritchard article title)[edit]

Hi Mrs. Hudson! I see here you renamed David Pritchard (chess writer) → (chess player), but of course "(chess writer)" is more appropriate for the subject concerned. You mentioned in the edit sum your reason was to make more consistent with other articles, I'm not sure what you mean, I don't know the background of that, can you explain to me? Hi Ihardlythinkso! I meant that all chess authors here in Wiki are classified primarily as chess players. After all, a chess author is always a chess player, but chess player is not always an author. Regards, Mrs.Hudson.

rename[edit]

When you rename an article, you should make the change at index of chess articles too. The reason is that the "changes" to that page show changes to the article with that exact name, and after a move it shows changes to the redirect page instead of the article.
