Historical Photo Sources

One way of getting an old historical photo is find a book with a good print, use your trusty digital camera on it, and voila, a jpg. For example, there are only so many photos of Doc Holliday, Wyatt Earp, Big Nose Kate, and so on. The ones I want are from about 1870, and so far as I can tell, once published somewhere in a book are fair game for the web. Is that not true? Same for photos found on the web of these historial persons. Unless somebody has added some kind of proprietary background to their jpg to identify it as being from their own site (after they stole it from somebody ELSE) what's the problem with just lifting it? I just wanted to tell you why I reverted your edit on the Syracuse, New York page, in order to avoid any conflict, etc. My reason was that in the present context, the sentence refers to Syracuse itself as a convention center, rather than the Civic center (convention center) specifically; I believe this was done purposefully to include the Empire Expo Center as well. Merging of the Alt versions of the CAFE templates

So there appears to be a plausible reason to have two forms of this template which was not taken into consideration during TfD. In light of this, I would say undo the merge. Alternatively, it is possible to have a single template with optional parameters, which might play the same role as the two former templates, but I don't know if it would require changing all existing articles that use these templates. In a nutshell, you can write {{bar|}} in a template, and bar will only get substituted if it's non-blank. There are a number of esoteric templates that use this feature. The simplest template programming construct to use would be {{qif}}. For a really complicated example with lots of alternative and optional parameters, look at {{cite book}}. Tents - Spam

I see you have removed ALL the external links from Tent. At least some of these are to non-commercial sites, and so should have remained. The ones which were to commercial sites were generally prefaced by an indication that this was the case - the main objective was to provide access to lots of pictures of different types and styles of tents. What led me to the Tent article was what I take to be the activity of a spammer; take a look.[1]. What led me to remove ALL of the ext links was that they were all commercial retail sites, and I could see no basis for choosing one over another. There are clearly too many links, and literally hundreds could easily be added.

I think that it is fair to say that Wikipedia tries to exclude commercial links in general. You are right in saying that the links provide "lots of pictures of different types and styles of tents", but I'm not comfortable saying that that justifies a free-for-all in external links. I think, as with so many other wikipedia articles, that we should be seeking out (or producing ourselves) free images to include in articles.

Wikipedia is not a collection of links. Anyone seeking commercial tent buying info can get reams of it by googling the word "tent"-- I don't see the value of us serving as a clearinghouse of online vendors. Over the next year, I think I could easily create a dozen or more free images of tent designs, and I assume that you and others could help in that effort. Sure, once we can get a reasonable selection of pictures and/or drawings then I would be quite happy to remove the commercial links which are selling tents etc. online. I think that the links to tent manufacturers without any online sales facility could be left for a bit longer perhaps. Old photographs and Art images

I know the work you're doing has to be done, and almost all of it deals with images that really have to go. But I find a smattering of pre-1923 photographs and artwork that was painted by artists who have been dead 50 or more years, that is only lacking a source (and sometimes has been mistagged). I have had a fair amount of success finding sources for such work, and restoring them to their articles. It would be easier to do before your bot does its thing than after, though, so if you notice that you're dealing with such images, could you leave me a note and give me a day or two before you pull the trigger and let me see if I can save us both some trouble? If I see any, I'll let you know. However, the bot's work is almost entirely automated, and I don't look at more than a couple percent of the images it deals with. Fourteeners--spam revert

I see that you removed the Interactive map of Colorado fourteeners link from the Fourteener page. I assume that this looked like spam from a commercial site. However if you look at the site, even though it is .com, it has very little if any commercial content, and the actual link is a useful and noncommercial adjunct to the content of the Wikipedia article. I removed it because the guy who posted it posted it to nine different pages in 13 minutes this morning Special:Contributions/64.131.165.121. That's spamming. (It is also one of the slowest-loading pages I've ever seen.) It's true that the other links provide similar info, so I don't think it's crucial to keep it. And I don't claim to be an expert in Wiki ettiquette, but I do think "spamming" is a little harsh; all of the links are relevant to their respective pages, and there is no suggestion that the links were put in for commercial gain. Is it always "spamming" if someone puts in lots of relevant external links very efficiently? I ask as a relative newcomer to WP. -- Spireguy 22:32, 20 April 2006 (UTC)

One problem is that a lot of people want to increase the page hits on their pages, for whatever reason (including the idea of selling ads once they get some decent traffic). But the real issue is that we want good articles, not so-so articles with a dozen links to more so-so (or even good) articles, which may or may not stay available, may or may not stay good, may or may not end up larded with ads. Almost all instances of the use of eponymous that I've seen are as vocabulary assistive links, to provide the reader with a definition for an unfamiliar word, rather than for exploration of the larger concept of eponymy. In those cases where it appears that the editor intends to provide a definition to an unfamiliar term, a link to Wiktionary is appropriate, in my opinion. Nationality

Hi! It was nice to hear that someone shares with me this impression that most American think that universe revolves around the US, Canada being their main satellite. The Britishmen? Simply think that only momentarily universe does not revolve around the British Islands. Simply a note: the thing about specifying nationality is stated in the Wikipedia:Manual of Style guideline page. If we want to write a serious encyclopedia (apart remove articles about stupid US TV shows, but this is another matter) we should try to follow the same rules. A tool for leaving warning messages

Hi. I noticed that you actively revert vandalism to articles. Thanks!! I also noticed that in at least one case (Atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki) you didn't leave a warning message on the vandal's talk page. I think it's important to leave messages in almost every instance of even the most minor inappropriate edits for these (and probably other) reasons:

• People just test-editing can be directed to the sandbox where they won't corrupt real articles.
• Mischievious newcomers may stop if their first edits result in a polite request to behave.
• Sysops can more quickly ban more serious vandals if they've already been warned a few times.

Leaving lots of messages can be tedious, even with the templates documented at Wikipedia:Vandalism. So I've made some vandal-warning tools that are explained at User:Kbh3rd/Vandal_warning_toolbox. A list of warnings can be added to that toolbox menu on the left whenever a user talk page is being edited so that the proper warning message is only a click away. You might like to try it out.

Surplus store

I'm of mixed feelings about the ==See also== section of Surplus store, but I'm curious why you left the two other store links while removing Galaxy. Granted, Galaxy has linkspammed a slew of articles, but looking at this one article, it seems to me that they should either all stay or all go. I initially took them out while cleaning up spam, mistaking them for external links, and them put them back when I realised they were links to articles. I don't want to step on anyone's toes by adding "too many" external links. However, many of the articles that I have added links to have no images/poor quality images/nearly no information. Adding links to the Bioimages website is a fast way to help users be able to "see" the plant/ecosystem that the article is about (and it is a reference, not a commercial website).

I considered uploading some images directly into the articles. However, I didn't do that because I think the terms of use of Wikipedia are incompatable with those of Bioimages (http://www.cas.vanderbilt.edu/bioimages/terms-of-use.htm). Although the images in the Bioimages website are freely available for educational and personal use, they aren't public domain. I am glad that you didn't remove the links because I would have been very upset at the hours I've spent adding them for (what I consider) the good of Wikipedians.

I hope I edited this "talk" right - I haven't done it before.

Had an edit conflict... I was toning down the entry at the same time as you were removing it. I do think it's interesting enough to go in the article, with the company name and price not explicitly mentioned. To suggest a $9000 device for "experienced professional users" as being suitable for "personal" recordings is quite a stretch, and the company's own description suggests strongly to me that skill and experience are required for good results.

I don't know how common it is for an editor who has reverted a vandalism to not put a warning template on that vandal's page, but if you see vandalism that is reverted by me, know that I will follow up. I added a link to my website Houdini Lives! on the Houdini page and it was deleted as "spam." Was it really spam? I think it's an excellent resource for current Houdini news, new book and DVD releases, etc. But I see there are no links whatsoever on the Houdini page -- are all links are considered spam on this page? Odd, because I think links to websites that provide information beyond what's offered on Wikipedia is not such a bad thing to include on a page. Just my two cents.
