April 2010

Hello. When you patrol new pages, all articles that you have looked at should be marked patrolled, whether you marked them for deletion or deemed them acceptable, unless you are not sure. When you patrol pages from Special:NewPages you should see a [Mark this page as patrolled] link at the bottom right corner. I had just noticed that you marked a new page with a CSD tag but hadn't marked it as patrolled. If you use Twinkle, it should do this automatically. Foreign-language contributions

Hi. {{db-foreign}} is only used in the situation (not common in my experience) where an article from a foreign WP has been cut-and-pasted here (the point being that to do that loses the contribution record - there is a procedure at WP:TRANSLATE for doing it properly). The foreign WP reference should be included in the tag, e.g. {{db-foreign|source=es:Warekena}}.

Much more usually, what we get is a foreign text input by somebody who probably doesn't know any other WP exists. The right tag then is {{notenglish}}, which is not a speedy request - because sometimes these articles are worth translating. When that expands on the article page, it gives you a message and a link to the place to paste it on WP:PNT, where someone who knows the language may pick it up and translate or PROD or whatever is appropriate.

If you know or can guess the language, then put, e.g., {{notenglish|Spanish}}. That gives a more useful template, including a link to the relevant foreign Wikipedia, and also a link to Google Translate, which will show you a machine translation - rough and ready, but often good enough to tell you that the article is about a NN band or person and can be speedy tagged without bothering to list it at PNT.

The Google Translate facility can be used to help guess the language - e.g. if it looks like Arabic but the translation makes no sense, try Farsi.

There is a useful set of message templates such as {{contrib-ru1}} to give the author a bilingual message saying we require English and pointing him to the foreign WP. List of them at WP:PNT/T. The most exotic one I have yet used for real is {{contrib-sq1}}.

In fact "Gervasio maria" just now, when I added {{notenglish|Portuguese}} and looked at the translation, was a nasty personal attack, so I didn't bother pointing the author to Portuguese WP - his contribution would not have been welcome there, either.

Twinkle Issue

{{helpme}} When using twinkle to caution/warn a user, my signature is displayed in an odd box. How do I fix that automatically? I assume it is a template issue.

You probably have a leading space in your signature in your Preferences. If not, try copying and pasting the contents of the signature box from preferences (make sure to put <nowiki> tags around it) and use {{helpme}} again. --Darkwind (talk) 18:24, 16 April 2010 (UTC)

Hmm. I tested this, and it seems the default signature itself causes this problem. Try inserting something like "--[[User:N419BH|N419BH]] ([[User talk:N419BH|talk]])" (without the quotes) in the signature box in your preferences, and check the "Sign my name exactly as shown" box just below it. That should fix the problem (and remember that you'll have to insert a space before your ~~~~'s when leaving a manual comment). Darkwind (talk) 18:37, 16 April 2010 (UTC)

Request

If you use twinkle and watch recent edits, please make sure you also take a look at the discussion page (Karl Koch). A discussion was already one the way but no one was able to provide any reliable source for an important statement. the pov-statement in the article was therefor correctly deleted, at the very least till a reliable source is found. the previous state of the article was npov because it did not have speculations on his death. Hi there, and thanks for alerting me to the nomination of an article I began a while ago, California Rural Legal Assistance, for speedy deletion. However, I was unable to find it on the log for the day you notified me. Likewise, I did not see the article itself tagged for speedy deletion. And as of today, the article still exists. Finally, you allege that the article is a clear copyright violation. On whose copyright does it infringe? I am glad to work to avoid these issues, but I am usually pretty careful about that sort of thing. Hi; Welcome aboard Wikipedia.

It appears you apparently got your "quote" of the NTSB probable cause statement from ASN's summary of that accident. While ASN is often a good source for some accident information, it is very important to compare what that site says, with the actual words of the NTSB, particularly when quoting the Probable Cause statement. In this case, some of what you quoted as being from the NTSB report, was in fact a re-wording by ASN. Accordingly, I replaced with the actual unabridged words of the NTSB report. Anytime a quotation is put in Wikipedia, it must be the actual word-for-word statement of the one that said it. Alterations of "quotations" are never permitted, for obvious reasons. Readding db-hoax tag to History of Romania

Issue

{{adminhelpme}} Got an article, Jean-Pierre Fenyo, that appears to be a substantial copyright infringement. A bot identified it and I personally reviewed it after noticing the tag was removed by an IP. A substantial amount of the article is indeed copyrighted text. I readded the tag. The same IP then made several additional edits without rewriting the text and deleted the tag. What is the proper way to proceed? --N419BH (talk) 02:19, 5 May 2010 (UTC)

Hmm, well the message posted on the talk page complicates things a little. There's potentially a good article there but I think the copyright/COI/attribution issues should be cleared up first before we clean up that puff-piece article. Little Richard

My change for the Little Richard page was correct. Leon Robinson was not nominated for an Emmy Award for his performance in the film. Nominated that year was Ben Kingsley, Barry Pepper, Gregory Hines, Andy Garcia, and Kenneth Branagh, who won. The only award Leon was nominated for was an Image Award. canvassing

I was just making a point to two or three editors because many times you write and you don't hear back. so i figured by writing to a few tnat would increase the chances of some looking at the charges. its funny as soon as i say something im contacted right away but the vandalism happening on the pages no one responds. Just saying it can be frustrating.

I completely respect that. Its just that ive noticed that some people can completely change the article and they dont get any warning, it seems some editors can make drastic changes and get away withaeven a warning. if some others made the drastic changes cosmic latte made you can be sure that the page would changed already. But as soon as other editors make a minor change the are warned. It seems that the rules only applies to certain editors not for all and to be truthful thats why wikipedia are often stated as not a varified source of information. Hi again. You seem to be confused with the concept of sockpuppetry. A sockpuppet is a user who edits under different usernames or IPs in order to e.g. evade a block or cast multiple votes on Wikipedia polls. Each different username or IP that user controls is called a "sockpuppet" (or simply a "sock"). Most users trying to game the system through sockpuppetry are easily caught. They're usually inexperienced users who believe that by switching names they won't be recognized. However, it's usually easy to identify a user's pattern when he or she edits under another name. Admins have a heavy hand on sockpuppetry, and virtually all instances of sockpuppetry will result in a block of all accounts the user controlled (often including their primary one, aka "sockmaster"). Check this user and his confirmed list of sockpuppets for instance. A tireless sockpuppeteer he was, I found tens of his socks myself.
Then there's a reduced number of experienced users who decide to engage on sockpuppetry (often to try to enforce a POV or influence a discussion). As they know the system, they can fool other users more easily. Some even managed to become admins until they were caught. There's a reduced number of admins who possess the checkuser tool, which allows a user's IP to be located. A checkuser may be requested if there is suspicion that a user might be or might have a sockpuppet. I hope this clarifies. :-) Regards, Húsönd 01:38, 10 May 2010 (UTC)

We really ought to have a policy on this sort of thing. It is OK to mention this specualtion, but not allowed to mention that one? I do not see how that can work and I am always thinking of the potential to hurt a living person. I can see allowing anything mentioned in the press with a disclaimer, but it would be better and easier to bar any specualtion about the future. Or not, I am still noodling this over. BP Gulf Oil Disaster

The convention is to also include the name of the responsible company, not only the 'vessel'. For example, the "Exxon Valdez Oil Disaster".

Could you also please confirm that you are not in the direct, or indirect employ, contract or sub-contract of any oil company or it's subcontractors? Additionally that you are not being paid by anyone to edit Wikipedia articles?

I really like your edit history, and I've seen your name around... and we both registered accounts within weeks of each other... but I want to warn you that I don't think an RfA would go well right now. Simply put, you only have about 3,000 edits and over 80% of those are automated. There's nothing wrong with automated edits, don't let anyone convince you otherwise, but understand that people will discount them (including me, to some degree) because of the ease with which someone can amass them. I noticed that you also hadn't contributed to an RFAs. That's completely fine, in fact maybe a good thing, but I think that following a few would be instructive about what the community responds to. I don't necessarily agree with the above as reasons to oppose, but I wanted to give you a very pragmatic heads up about what I think might happen were you to run for RfA tomorrow. True. Unionhawk is a good editor, but he/she needs more experience. Four years ago, adminship for someone with your stats would have been a trivial formality. They might have looked at your edit summary usage percentage (seems like such an antiquated concern). But adminship today is a much different story. There's a certain hostility towards anti-vandalism patrollers, something I think is poisonous to the project, but has to do with a general hostility towards non-content contributions. Ironically, one of the greatest anti-vandalism blockers at the moment, User:Materialscientist had a rough RfA and very little anti-vandalism assertions in his initial nomination.
As a general rule, I would suggest more content contributions. That is a wide mandate though. If you have some area of expertise, you can create well sourced stubs about that area; if instead you are interested in some class of already existing articles, you should join up with one of those projects and add where you can. Personally I've done a little bit of all of those. I've added to certain classes of articles that I have professional experience in, and I've also created articles I knew little about before I researched them.
I'd like to continue this discussion. I think you have tremendous potential for the project and I'd like to contribute whatever experience I have to help. As you might note, I'm not an admin, but I've been extensively involved in the anti-vandalism project and I've stuck my head out on the politically-volatile issue of article deletion. Fairchild Dornier 328JET

I read a recent comment you posted to another page where you lamented about an article you had created only to find it already existed. It seems to me that your article has every right to stand on it's own merit. The other Article mentions the model 428 but as the title shows it is an article on the model 328. Merely being mentioned does not preclude your article. I would continue to improve the article you created and it should have it's own notability. Thanks for the encouragement. My concern was the page on the 428 was originally a redirect to the 328JET. I'll keep looking for information on the airplane. I think Fairchild Dornier was looking at a Turboprop version as well (to be called simply 428) and maybe even a 528 turboprop but I can't find anything anywhere. Issue with user

I've seen you have brought up an issue(s) with User:E and b, on the user's talk page.
The user has been creating vandalism to The Naked Brothers Band (TV series).
I would agree to block the user and I'm pretty sure it's in Wiki's policies somewhere that they have no tolerance regarding age limit (I know there is some policies regarding disabilities), but according to their user page, it says:

Evan and Braden Swope are two crazy kids who like to make movies with there camera.Evan is 11 years old and braden is 9 years old.Right now they are currently filming the juju bros.

And I personally would feel bad blocking there IP address, because they are only kids messing around on the computer (who probably don't know how to look at their user page and don't understand that they're doing wrong on Wikipedia.)
I would just block there user account (there is no way of verifying that they're kids, but we can infer based on their user page & in the worse case, would block there IP address if they were involved in any sort of sock pupating.)

Yr Reversion on the Seagate Technology Article

Rather than COI censorship u have two editors (Richharrisstx and I) who agree that the material is TMI and IMO biased and deliberately defamatory to Seagate. For example, Convolve has apparently sued Seagate, WD, HGST, Dell, etc, but the only place this lawsuit appears is in the Seagate article. Furthermore, it is one sided, almost like it has been written by a lawyer for Convolve - without saying so, it appears that Seagate didn't do to much or pay too much to avoid the patent. Similarly, firmware upgrades of computer equipment are so common as to question why here and not in every firmware based computer product starting with MB BIOSes. The "clicking" article might be fair, but I am pretty close to disk drive industries and I have to say this one never rose to the level of some other and very famous problems, like the IBM DeathStar of Iomega's real Click of Death. So it appears to me that the material was posted by someone with an axe to grind against Seagate and therefore compromises the integrity of Wikipedia. Thus, IMO u have reverted to vandalism. RE:ANI and Rollback

Thanks for the advice. I'm glad you understand, and I will try to limit my use of the function. It is just so much easier when a user has contributed like 5 bad edits and with one click you and revert them all. And as for the user that nominated me, we have a history and he always points out every petty edit of mine, for example once in a GA review he pointed out like 35+ things wrong with it, and the second time I nominated, the editor only noticed two or three. And as you see took the time to search all of my edits. He did notify me on my talk page to limit use of rollback in case my rollback is revoked, and he ends up the one reporting me. Cfm ignored

I am afraid with the merger of Category:Banks of China and Category:Banks of the People's Republic of China, there is no longer any way to identify those banks that aren't related to the ROC. You know I'm indef'd on a fistful of wikia sub-domains? Hoot is, they're ones I've never even edited. They let anyone be an admin over there. You should also change 'serif' to 'sans-serif' as 'Arial Bold' is a sans-serif typeface and that's presumably what you'd prefer as backup in case it's not available. If the same rule which applies to AfDs also applies to consensus discussions like this one, I believe policy states that non-admin closure is only appropriate if the nomination is withdrawn and there has been no support by other users. Yeah, I can't seem to find policy specific to admin noticeboards, only AfD. The only thing I did find was Wikipedia:Closing discussions, which states "the closing admin" several times.
