Updating MSK biographies[edit]

Hi Naraht, I saw you edited the article for Craig B. Thompson awhile ago, and I was curious if you'd be willing to look over some of my proposed changes on the talk page. I'm trying to update and expand the BLPs of their executives, but I've been having trouble finding anyone to review my suggestions given my COI. If you've got the time, could you take a look?--FacultiesIntact (talk) 23:46, 25 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Disambiguation link notification for February 16[edit]

Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. An automated process has detected that when you recently edited Hymns of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (1985 book), you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Robert Lowry (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). Such links are usually incorrect, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of unrelated topics with similar titles. (Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.)

I'm afraid we can't do anything about a block on an IP address unless you tell us what IP address it is. Please post a new unblock request giving us that information, which will be given in the message you see when you try to edit. Alternatively, if for any reason you prefer not to make your IP address publicly visible, you can request an unblock through the Unblock Ticket Request System. Mjohnson145 What is on the left has to *exactly* match the entry in the template doc. If you pluralize it generally doesn't recognize it. March 2018[edit]

You currently appear to be engaged in an edit war according to the reverts you have made on Template:RuPaul's Drag Race. Users are expected to collaborate with others, to avoid editing disruptively, and to try to reach a consensus rather than repeatedly undoing other users' edits once it is known that there is a disagreement.

Please be particularly aware that Wikipedia's policy on edit warring states:

 1. Edit warring is disruptive regardless of how many reverts you have made.
 2. Do not edit war even if you believe you are right.

If you find yourself in an editing dispute, use the article's talk page to discuss controversial changes; work towards a version that represents consensus among editors. You can post a request for help at an appropriate noticeboard or seek dispute resolution. In some cases it may be appropriate to request temporary page protection. If you engage in an edit war, you may be blocked from editing. Dallasansel (talk) 02:29, 23 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]

New Page Reviewer Flag[edit]

Hi, Naraht.
I've noticed that you are an AfC reviewer but don't yet have the New Page Reviewer flag. Would you please consider heading over to PERM and requesting it? (check the flag requirements HERE)
As part of a larger plan to increase cooperation between New Page Patrol and Articles for creation, we are trying to get as many of the active AfC reviewers as possible under the NPR user flag (per this discussion). Unlike the AfC request list, the NPR flag carries no obligation to review new articles, so I'm not asking you to help out at New Page Patrol if you don't want to, just to request the flag.
Of course, if it is something you would be interested in, you can have a look at the NPP tutorial. Please mention that you are an active AfC reviewer in your application.
Cheers and thanks for helping out at AfC, — Insertcleverphrasehere (or here) 06:35, 11 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]

New page reviewer granted[edit]

Hello Naraht. Your account has been added to the "New page reviewers" user group, allowing you to review new pages and mark them as patrolled, tag them for maintenance issues, or in some cases, tag them for deletion. The list of articles awaiting review is located at the New Pages Feed. New page reviewing is a vital function for policing the quality of the encylopedia; if you have not already done so, you must read the new tutorial at New Pages Review, the linked guides and essays, and fully understand the various deletion criteria. If you need more help or wish to discuss the process, please join or start a thread at page reviewer talk.

 • URGENT: Please consider helping get the huge backlog down to a manageable number of pages as soon as possible.
 • Be nice to new users - they are often not aware of doing anything wrong.
 • You will frequently be asked by users to explain why their page is being deleted - be formal and polite in your approach to them too, even if they are not.
 • Don't review a page if you are not sure what to do. Just leave it for another reviewer.
 • Remember that quality is quintessential to good patrolling. Take your time to patrol each article, there is no rush. Use the message feature and offer basic advice.

The reviewer right does not change your status or how you can edit articles. If you no longer want this user right, you may ask any administrator to remove it for you at any time. In case of abuse or persistent inaccuracy of reviewing, the right can be revoked at any time by an administrator. ~ Amory (utc) 12:10, 11 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]

List of Alpha Phi Omega members[edit]

Hi Naraht. If you use a citation template and don't add a title the page gets flagged up in the Category "Pages with citations using unnamed parameters" and an error message appears in the reference section. You'll find that some people will attempt to fix the problem, myself included. I suggest you have a quick look at the link and you'll see that it is a PDF of a magazine called "Torch & Trefoil" which has as its main heading "National Convention in ’98". If you think there is a better heading, feel free to add it, but simply removing the title has resulted in the error returning. If you need help with referencing please feel free to ask, either directly to me or else in the Tea House. People there do not bite and (well most) are friendly and helpful. Regards, Martin of Sheffield (talk) 16:52, 3 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Martin of Sheffield immediately after I reverted, I edited and added in the title from the page of the Torch and Trefoil that actually contained that information (rather than to the article on the front page. I found that I added Coach Wooden to the list back in 1997 (Yes, I've been here that long), but I don't know who added the reference to the current location on apoarchive.org.
OK, I just saw the revert and the error back and assumed a rather shorter editing career. There are a couple of other errors on that page that I didn't get around to fixing at lunch time - would you like to sort them out? Regards, Martin of Sheffield (talk) 17:22, 3 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]

NPR Newsletter No.11 25 May 2018[edit]

Hello Naraht, thank you for your work reviewing New Pages!

ACTRIAL:

 • WP:ACREQ has been implemented. The flow at the feed has dropped back to the levels during the trial. However, the backlog is on the rise again so please consider reviewing a few extra articles each day; a backlog approaching 5,000 is still far too high. An effort is also needed to ensure that older unsuitable older pages at the back of the queue do not get automatically indexed for Google.

Deletion tags

 • Do bear in mind that articles in the feed showing the trash can icon may have been tagged by inexperienced or non NPR rights holders. They require your further verification.

Backlog drive:

 • A backlog drive will take place from 10 through 20 June. Check out our talk page at WT:NPR for more details. NOTE: It is extremely important that we focus on quality reviewing. Despite our goal of reducing the backlog as much as possible, please do not rush while reviewing.

Editathons

 • There will be a large increase in the number of editathons in June. Please be gentle with new pages that obviously come from good faith participants, especially articles from developing economies and ones about female subjects. Consider using the 'move to draft' tool rather than bluntly tagging articles that may have potential but which cannot yet reside in mainspace.

Paid editing - new policy

 • Now that ACTRIAL is ACREQ, please be sure to look for tell-tale signs of undisclosed paid editing. Contact the creator if appropriate, and submit the issue to WP:COIN if necessary. There is a new global WMF policy that requires paid editors to connect to their adverts.

Subject-specific notability guidelines

 • The box at the right contains each of the subject-specific notability guidelines, please review any that are relevant BEFORE nominating an article for deletion.
 • Reviewers are requested to familiarise themselves with the new version of the notability guidelines for organisations and companies.

Not English

 • A common issue: Pages not in English or poor, unattributed machine translations should not reside in main space even if they are stubs. Please ensure you are familiar with WP:NPPNE. Check in Google for the language and content, tag as required, then move to draft if they do have potential.

News

 • Development is underway by the WMF on upgrades to the New Pages Feed, in particular ORES features that will help to identify COPYVIOs, and more granular options for selecting articles to review.
 • The next issue of The Signpost has been published. The newspaper is one of the best ways to stay up to date with news and new developments. between our newsletters.

NPP Backlog Elimination Drive[edit]

Hello Naraht, thank you for your work reviewing New Pages!

We can see the light at the end of the tunnel: there are currently 2900 unreviewed articles, and 4000 unreviewed redirects.

Announcing the Backlog Elimination Drive!

 • As a final push, we have decided to run a backlog elimination drive from the 20th to the 30th of June.
 • Reviewers who review at least 50 articles or redirects will receive a Special Edition NPP Barnstar: Special Edition New Page Patroller's Barnstar. Those who review 100, 250, 500, or 1000 pages will also receive tiered awards: 100 review coin, 250 review coin, 500 review coin, 1000 review certificate.
 • Please do not be hasty, take your time and fully review each page. It is extremely important that we focus on quality reviewing.

OK, I see my mistake.

I had added it to the main section because it looked that footnote 8 did not have a link to it.

On a second look, there is a link to it in the Civil unions and registered partnerships section. I did not see it because the section is collapsed by default.

A discussion is taking place as to whether the article List of Alpha Phi Omega chapters (geographical) is suitable for inclusion in Wikipedia according to Wikipedia's policies and guidelines or whether it should be deleted.

The article will be discussed at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/List of Alpha Phi Omega chapters (geographical) until a consensus is reached, and anyone is welcome to contribute to the discussion. The nomination will explain the policies and guidelines which are of concern. The discussion focuses on high-quality evidence and our policies and guidelines.

Sandstein seems odd that a user level has delete but not undelete permissions, but that's an issue for another time.Naraht (talk) 19:17, 28 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Naraht: Sandstein can undelete just like any other admin; he just doesn't as a matter of choice, and he is not required to do so.
@Sandstein: Those of us who work at WP:REFUND won't unilaterally overturn an AFD without the administrator giving a go-ahead. Simply referring users to WP:REFUND doesn't help us much. Should we assume that your referral of users to WP:REFUND constitutes your acceptance of userfying or draftifying an article you deleted? ~Anachronist (talk) 17:50, 29 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, if admins here consider it prudent to do so (which I generally never do, hence the referral). Sandstein 17:58, 29 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@Sandstein: & @Anachronist: Things just hit my watchlist. I find it interesting that a deleted article was moved into draft space when it appears that Naraht already has a copy of the article in question in their user space here. I will probably be stepping WAY back from this issue (probably no more discussion from me on the article in question any time soon). No need to ping me with any response. I've said my two bits and I'm moving on to other things. -- Dolotta (talk) 23:43, 30 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@Sandstein:, @Anachronist: and @Dolotta: gotten from Deletionpedia during the back and forth here so that the discussion that I was having with Sandstein could have something to reference. During the AFD, I was trying to get from him (unsuccessfully) what he felt represented enough added material that it no longer met his original reason for the AFD.Naraht (talk) 01:33, 1 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]
My views have been made known as clearly, as I am able, on Draft talk:List of Kappa Alpha Order chapters. I have nothing to add. If the article in question had been changed, I would have been more than happy to change my views. I ask, again, that I be left out of this. I asked that I not be pinged because, quite frankly I am tired of discussing this. Naraht, I wish you the best of luck. -- Dolotta (talk) 01:57, 1 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]

USERNOCAT[edit]

I am working from Wikipedia:Database reports/Polluted categories, but there's no way to quickly turn the whole list into an AWB batch except by manually processing each category one by one. The one you thanked me for was part of a batch of 14 or 15 userpages that were all in the same category, so I created an AWB batch for it so I could power through it more quickly — there were enough pages to deal with in that instance that it was worth taking a few minutes to make an AWB batch for it, but the only way to make it AWBable is to do the manual "load the category in AWB and then filter the results for page type" thing. So it's only worth going that route if you come across a category with a lot of userpages to clean up — the report doesn't really offer a way to generate a downloadable list of all the misfiled content apart from checking each category one by one, and if you find a category with only one or two userpages it's much less efficient to follow all the steps needed to make an AWB batch than it is to just HotCat it. Bearcat (talk) 20:25, 6 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Bearcat Thanx, I've worked from the Database reports, but it was rare to see one that large, and so I don't think I ever put together an AWB script. If I had done so, I think it would have simply been a to :Category:Example, using "suppress categories" template for a group seems a fairly difficult. I'm glad to see the report is now down under 1000, I'll try to work from the bottom if I get the chance this week. Also do you have any suggestions that the database report should consider to naturally be polluted and thus report?Naraht (talk) 11:52, 9 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Bearcat Um. I'll be waiting over .....here waiting for next Friday to see what's left. Looking at your contributions page, it looks like you covered most of them and I picked 30 or 40 to look at which were empty. Well done!Naraht (talk) 14:13, 9 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]
I covered #1 to #150 and from about #740 down. I haven't tackled anything between between 150 and 740 yet, so if you want to do some those are still needing to be checked (with, of course, the proviso that some of them might have already been cleaned by other people as well.) I'm also relieved that the list is below 1,000 for the first time in ages. Bearcat (talk) 14:47, 9 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]
BearcatThanx, I'll start from 750ish and go up, and let you know how far I get by the end of the day.Naraht (talk) 14:53, 9 July 2018 (UTC) (Oddly enough, in looking at what you wrote, the # 1 is in normal type, the # 150 is in a green backgroupd and the # 740 is in a brown one. Wierd). Agreed on glad it is that low. How do you normally set up the big ones for AWB, just add the colon?Naraht (talk) 14:53, 9 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Apparently I do as well, but I didn't know, so apparently not as many people talk about me behind my back on Wikipedia as I thought. :)Naraht (talk) 16:07, 9 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Bearcat Current Status, worked my way up to the start of the 'T's at 596, *except* for those that start with Category:Templates. I *think* the last 3 need to be allowed to stand (and should be marked as OK to be polluted), but the top 4 have entries that can be fixed, but I wanted your opinion.Naraht (talk) 19:38, 9 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]

One other thing I've noticed, for the record, is that even though Category:Living people didn't get picked up on this week's run because I last cleaned it late enough on Friday that it happened to be empty at the time the report updated, it's one of those categories that has a uniquely unfortunate tendency to collect new userspace pages pretty much daily. So it's a category that should always be checked at least once a day regardless of whether it happens to be on the report or not (and since it's rarely the only category that a new userspace page has been added to, it also has the side benefit of clearing up some other newly polluted categories at the same time.) For example, I just searched it and 13 userpages had been added to it since the report ran on Saturday morning. Bearcat (talk) 22:00, 9 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]

And for a status update from my end, I've worked down from 150 to 290, but also 290 through 315 should be blown off for now because they're maintenance categories populated by maintenance templates — technically we should be trying to clear those by wrapping the category-transcluding templates in "Suppress categories" too, but that's a longer-term project which can wait until we've got the primary content categories under better control. There's no technical way to mark any category as "okay to be polluted" — the only thing we can do for any category on the list is either buckle down and clean it, or just accept that it's a permanent speed bump that will always be on the list. And I'm not a fan of tool kludge, personally. Bearcat (talk) 22:38, 9 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Bearcat I'll keep a look out for Category:Living people as well. Note, there does seem to be a way to mark it, see the configuration at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Database_reports/Polluted_categories/Configuration. we can add polluted category ...Naraht (talk) 03:45, 10 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Week of 7/13 version[edit]

Bearcat What section would you like me to work on? Can't tell from your contribution if you are working from top or bottom (or have simply finished)Naraht (talk) 14:58, 16 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]
I actually got through the whole list already this weekend — despite the number being in the 600s range, what I actually found this time was an abnormally high proportion of categories that either had already been cleared by somebody else before I got to them or were erroneously picked up despite never actually having been polluted at all, so it was really easy to just blaze through them a lot faster than usual. So what I'd suggest in the meantime is to do the "keeping a daily eye on Category:Living people" thing — but when you do load the living people search, also click the checkbox for "draft" and reprocess the search, because draftspace pages have a bad habit of getting added there as well. Bearcat (talk) 15:05, 16 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Bearcat Cool. Seriously Template:Polluted Categories will help with these that we know are bad and should stay bad. I'll keep an eye on Living people as well. The other thing that we can do is see if we can get a version of the list of the top 1000 for Draft space as well. Also, if we really want our dreams, figure out some way to tell if it is one user page in a normally mainspace cat or the other way around.Naraht (talk) 15:09, 16 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]
I asked at VPT if there was a way to add a function whereby each category would be coded for "what type of content is this supposed to contain", but I wouldn't say I got a favourable response from anybody who was eager to work on such a thing. I have learned that sometimes you can tell just by eyeballing the category's name, however — for instance, if a "Wikipedians" or "WikiProject" category shows up in the run, I already know those aren't meant for mainspace pages so I should be checking the "main search" instead of the "user search".
In draftspace we already have a partial tool through Category:AfC submissions with categories — but as far as I know that only catches drafts that have actually been submitted to the AFC review queue, not necessarily unsubmitted drafts that are still being worked on, so a "polluted categories" report for draftspace content (whether a separate one or just an addition of draft namespace to the userpage report) would still be useful). Bearcat (talk) 15:21, 16 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Bearcat, sorry that should have been Template:Polluted category , which does exist and that the weekly generated output *does* look for. I think Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Categories may be a better place to ask for help in a "what type" marking for categories. Still for the draft space a good place to start. Not sure how we can clone the draft version, but the userspace version was improved in the last year, so we can ask that person.Naraht (talk) 16:34, 16 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Status update as of July 21[edit]

On the new run this morning, I've cleared #1-#76 (anything that begins with a number), the music cluster (#379-387), the writers cluster (#594-599) and anything that had the words "Canada" or "Canadian" in it (#174-177 and a couple of isolated "X in Canada" further down the list) — and I've started adding the polluted category template to categories that we don't really need to concern ourselves with, so hopefully they'll drop off next run. I'm not planning to sit here all day continuing with the list, however, so if you want to do some anything I haven't mentioned above still needs checking. Chart of the New Pages Patrol backlog for the past 6 months. (Purge)

Hello Naraht, thank you for your work reviewing New Pages!

June backlog drive

Overall the June backlog drive was a success, reducing the last 3,000 or so to below 500. However, as expected, 90% of the patrolling was done by less than 10% of reviewers.
Since the drive closed, the backlog has begun to rise sharply again and is back up to nearly 1,400 already. Please help reduce this total and keep it from raising further by reviewing some articles each day.

New technology, new rules
 • New features are shortly going to be added to the Special:NewPagesFeed which include a list of drafts for review, OTRS flags for COPYVIO, and more granular filter preferences. More details can be found at this page.
 • Probationary permissions: Now that PERM has been configured to allow expiry dates to all minor user rights, new NPR flag holders may sometimes be limited in the first instance to 6 months during which their work will be assessed for both quality and quantity of their reviews. This will allow admins to accord the right in borderline cases rather than make a flat out rejection.
 • Current reviewers who have had the flag for longer than 6 months but have not used the permissions since they were granted will have the flag removed, but may still request to have it granted again in the future, subject to the same probationary period, if they wish to become an active reviewer.
Editathons
 • Editathons will continue through August. Please be gentle with new pages that obviously come from good faith participants, especially articles from developing economies and ones about female subjects. Consider using the 'move to draft' tool rather than bluntly tagging articles that may have potential but which cannot yet reside in mainspace.
The Signpost
 • The next issue of the monthly magazine will be out soon. The newspaper is an excellent way to stay up to date with news and new developments between our newsletters. If you have special messages to be published, or if you would like to submit an article (one about NPR perhaps?), don't hesitate to contact the editorial team here.

Nomination of SAINT (software) for deletion[edit]

A discussion is taking place as to whether the article SAINT (software) is suitable for inclusion in Wikipedia according to Wikipedia's policies and guidelines or whether it should be deleted.

The article will be discussed at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/SAINT (software) until a consensus is reached, and anyone, including you, is welcome to contribute to the discussion. The nomination will explain the policies and guidelines which are of concern. The discussion focuses on high-quality evidence and our policies and guidelines.

Users may edit the article during the discussion, including to improve the article to address concerns raised in the discussion. However, do not remove the article-for-deletion notice from the top of the article. — Newslinger talk 13:36, 11 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Notice

The article Gamma Sigma Epsilon has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

pure listcruft with horrible SHOUTING

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, pages may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the page to address the issues raised. Removing will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. — RHaworth (talk · contribs) 10:47, 16 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]

I've noticed that you've restored sections of a page recently edited the section https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alpha_Phi_Alpha#Notable_controversies which was marked as containing a potential NPOV issue. However, in the restoration of the sections you failed to respond to the Talk section for the page section in question. NPR Newsletter No.13 18 September 2018[edit]

Hello Naraht, thank you for your work reviewing New Pages!

The New Page Feed currently has 2700 unreviewed articles, up from just 500 at the start of July. For a while we were falling behind by an average of about 40 articles per day, but we have stabilised more recently. Please review some articles from the back of the queue if you can (Sort by: 'Oldest' at Special:NewPagesFeed), as we are very close to having articles older than one month.

Project news
As part of this project, the feed will have some larger updates to functionality next month. Specifically, ORES predictions will be built in, which will automatically flag articles for potential issues such as vandalism or spam. Copyright violation detection will also be added to the new page feed. See the projects's talk page for more info.
Other
Moving to Draft and Page Mover
 • Some unsuitable new articles can be best reviewed by moving them to the draft space, but reviewers need to do this carefully and sparingly. It is most useful for topics that look like they might have promise, but where the article as written would be unlikely to survive AfD. If the article can be easily fixed, or if the only issue is a lack of sourcing that is easily accessible, tagging or adding sources yourself is preferable. If sources do not appear to be available and the topic does not appear to be notable, tagging for deletion is preferable (PROD/AfD/CSD as appropriate). See additional guidance at WP:DRAFTIFY.
 • If the user moves the draft back to mainspace, or recreates it in mainspace, please do not re-draftify the article (although swapping it to maintain the page history may be advisable in the case of copy-paste moves). AfC is optional except for editors with a clear conflict of interest.
 • Articles that have been created in contravention of our paid-editing-requirements or written from a blatant NPOV perspective, or by authors with a clear COI might also be draftified at discretion.
 • The best tool for draftification is User:Evad37/MoveToDraft.js(info). Kindly adapt the text in the dialogue-pop-up as necessary (the default can also be changed like this). Note that if you do not have the Page Mover userright, the redirect from main will be automatically tagged as CSD R2, but in some cases it might be better to make this a redirect to a different page instead.
 • The Page Mover userright can be useful for New Page Reviewers; occasionally page swapping is needed during NPR activities, and it helps avoid excessive R2 nominations which must be processed by admins. Note that the Page Mover userright has higher requirements than the NPR userright, and is generally given to users active at Requested Moves. Only reviewers who are very experienced and are also very active reviewers are likely to be granted it solely for NPP activities.
List of other useful scripts for New Page Reviewing

 • Twinkle provides a lot of the same functionality as the page curation tools, and some reviewers prefer to use the Twinkle tools for some/all tasks. It can be activated simply in the gadgets section of 'preferences'. There are also a lot of options available at the Twinkle preferences panel after you install the gadget.
 • In terms of other gadgets for NPR, HotCat is worth turning on. It allows you to easily add, remove, and change categories on a page, with name suggestions.
 • MoreMenu also adds a bunch of very useful links for diagnosing and fixing page issues.
 • User:Equazcion/ScriptInstaller.js(info): Installing scripts doesn't have to be complicated. Go to your common.js and copy importScript( 'User:Equazcion/ScriptInstaller.js' ); into an empty line, now you can install all other scripts with the click of a button from the script page! (Note you need to be at the ".js" page for the script for the install button to appear, not the information page)
 • User:TheJosh/Scripts/NewPagePatrol.js(info): Creates a scrolling new pages list at the left side of the page. You can change the number of pages shown by adding the following to the next line on your common.js page (immediately after the line importing this script): npp_num_pages=20; (Recommended 20, but you can use any number from 1 to 50).
 • User:Primefac/revdel.js(info): Is requesting revdel complicated and time consuming? This script helps simplify the process. Just have the Copyvio source URL and go to the history page and collect your diff IDs and you can drop them into the script Popups and it will create a revdel request for you.
 • User:Lourdes/PageCuration.js(info): Creates a "Page Curation" link to Special:NewPagesFeed up near your sandbox link.
 • User:Writ Keeper/Scripts/deletionFinder.js: Creates links next to the title of each page which show up if it has been previously deleted or nominated for deletion.
 • User:Evad37/rater.js(info): A fantastic tool for adding WikiProject templates to article talk pages. If you add: rater_autostartNamespaces = 0; to the next line on your common.js, the prompt will pop up automatically if a page has no Wikiproject templates on the talk page (note: this can be a bit annoying if you review redirects or dab pages commonly).

For the second time, on the template located at [1], if you click on “Click here for further instructions,” instruction #4 clearly states, "Additionally, you may want to check for Wikimedia projects that use this item and then remove or, if possible, replace with a superior item.”  This deletion nomination is based upon a likely copyright violation.  (See [2]). If the deletion request fails to pass, this file can be restored onto the article immediately. What is the justification, legal or otherwise, to have a possible violation of United States copyright law active/live on Wikipedia, until its status is resolved?

Dcflyer I see the instruction, however this seems to be the only place in wikipedia where action is to take place on locations based on a proposal for deletion rather than actually waiting for the discussion to finish. For articles, we don't automatically delete text which is viewed as potentially a copyvio, until it is confirmed.Naraht (talk) 13:28, 24 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Gamma Kappa Phi Seal Protected Copyright[edit]

Hi Naraht please don't remove this portion. I need the copyright information to be included, since there are now unauthorized modified versions of the seal being made by some members who are now considered 'breakaway' of our organization; so I have the reference to report from any social media like facebook the source of my claim of infringement. Aajim. The article does have information on the splits within Gamma Kappa Phi, but I don't think any of it is referenced. Wikipedia should never be used directly as a reference, only what the article does reference. None of the information about the seal is referenced and thus largely useless in that regard. And the article is a Wikipedia article about Gamma Kappa Phi, not controlled by the fraternity or any of its brothers or sisters.Naraht (talk) 14:15, 9 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Chart of the New Pages Patrol backlog for the past 6 months.

Hello Naraht, thank you for your work reviewing New Pages!

Backlog

As of 21 October 2018, there are 3650 unreviewed articles and the backlog now stretches back 51 days.

Community Wishlist Proposal
Project updates
 • ORES predictions are now built-in to the feed. These automatically predict the class of an article as well as whether it may be spam, vandalism, or an attack page, and can be filtered by these criteria now allowing reviewers to better target articles that they prefer to review.
 • There are now tools being tested to automatically detect copyright violations in the feed. This detector may not be accurate all the time, though, so it shouldn't be relied on 100% and will only start working on new revisions to pages, not older pages in the backlog.

A tag has been placed on User:Naraht/Omega Tau Sigma requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done for the following reason:

Redirect from userspace draft

Under the criteria for speedy deletion, pages that meet certain criteria may be deleted at any time.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. Adding Florida keys to school category[edit]

Would you please explain why you are doing this? Thank you. deisenbe (talk) 21:15, 8 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Deisenbe Sure. That Category, Category:Historically segregated African-American schools in the United States has sort keys of the State that the school is in. It is faster to do with Hotcat which leaves an edit description which you are seeing than to edit the entire article.Naraht (talk) 21:17, 8 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]
But why are you doing it? What does it accomplish? All I can see is that it maks the category sort wrong. deisenbe (talk) 01:10, 9 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Deisenbe Many categories consistently use sort keys, for example categories of people sort on last name. Rhadow added the statement of the sort back in December, and many of the schools were sorted that way when I started this. If you would like to change the standard sort key, we can move the discussion to Category talk:Historically segregated African-American schools in the United States.Naraht (talk) 16:12, 9 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you. It’s pretty ugly and hard to use, without state subheadings. deisenbe (talk) 16:24, 9 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]
The answer would seem to be to split the category by state, given its size. Can we pause on this for a day or two to see if Rhadow chimes in?Naraht (talk) 17:05, 9 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]
I manually did it for Segregation academies and it worked out rather well. Before you set out on this road, ask yourself whether the convenience for the casual user is worth the work it takes to organize all the articles. Is order by state really a useful ordering? In Segregation academies it is. The user can see that North Dakota had none and Alabama plenty. Certainly the current ordering by state (but invisible) is nigh-on useless. It might be just as good to remove the states from the category tags so you have an an alphabetical list of all the schools. I'm not volunteering to do the work for this category. I am happy to give advice. Free advice is worth what you pay. :^) Rhadow (talk) 18:42, 9 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Deisenbe,Rhadow I'd actually prefer that this be much closer to the way that Category:Segregation_academies is set up. Individual subcategories for each state with a few and leave the remaining half-dozen (?) like the one in Rhode Island without specific sort keys.Naraht (talk) 18:57, 9 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Alvanhholmes Corner[edit]

Thanks for the cookie. It took me three straight days and nights, a quart of sweat and a pint of blood. I created a Word document with successful templates and simply modify each template. Lots to learn yet, lots.

One thing you can help me with is creating a clean sandbox. At the moment my sandbox has a redirect. I fear that If I delete the redirect I the article William Farrar (settler)will either disappear or fall out of the que for approval. Is that true?

I have created another article on my user:Alvanholmes and would like to copy it into my sandbox, but that means I will have to lose the redirect and I am afraid of what will happen if I do that. Related issue: the original article was named Councillor William Farrar, when it was redirected the name was changed to William Farrar (settler) I would like to change the name back to Councillor William Farrar, but don't know how to do that. Can you help? Provide me instructions?

Thanks so much Alvanhholmes (talk) 02:34, 14 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Alvanhholmes Sorry it took so long to get back to you.
 1. We all started as noobs, I look back at some of my early edits and cringe.
 2. I deleted the redirect. Note, you can just edit the url and go to sandbox1 or sandbox3 or sandbox486 or ... (and then link them from your user page or a work page, etc. All are equally appropriate to edit, many people keep multiple sandboxes. The only limitation in that regard is not to add the categories (or to add the categories with a colon at the front :Category:English Colonists which makes it a link, not a member).
 3. Your actual user page is generally intended *not* to be used as a sandbox. I'd just copy what you have there to sandbox2 or some other name under your username.
 4. Given the rules on how article names are done, disambiguation are preferred and titles are discouraged. If there is a different disambiguation term that would make more sense than settler, then changing would be reasonable.

Let me know if you have any other questionsNaraht (talk) 13:56, 15 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you so very much. Thank you for deleting he redirect to William Farrar (settler). As regards that page. One item aboutwikipolicy that I am cognizant of and understand is the need for disambiguation and I totally agree, because in the original article I typed Beggars Bush and a kind reviewer turned it into a link to Beggars Bush a barracks in Ireland.

Beggars Bush is the original name of what is today Jordan Point, Virginia, which was, after 1622 massacre named Jordans Jorney(sic)for Capt Samuel Jordan, who has his own wikipedia page as Samuel Jordan.

There is not much more that can be said about Beggars Bush, but given that it is the original name of Jordans Journey>Jordan Point, Virginia. I think that it is notable enough to deserve it's own article, also the article contains an explanation of the origin of this Strange Name, which I think is important.

When I first encountered the Term Beggars Bush, back in 1962 when I started researching family history. I thought it was Burning Bush, as that was the only thing I could relate to. I have been confounded ever since as to where the term Beggars Bush came from, but after creating my first article I did some research and the article Beggars Bush is the result. I would like to create an external link within William Farrar (settlers) article to Beggars Bush that in the future some other erstwhile researcher won't have to waste time trying to figure it out all on their own.

I do not think that Councillor William Farrar is a name that will cause any ambiguity in the future, as there is only one such. The reason I would like to rename William Farrar (settler) to Councillor William Farrar is because he is mentioned on the page of Cicely Jordan Farrar as her third husband, and I have added a link to William Farrar (settler) on her page, but it looks strange. He was more than a settler, he was aprominent member of the early Virginia Colony, a Councillor in the House of Burgess, and one of 20 who arrested Governor Harvey, amongst other things. But linking him as William Farrar (settler) is unhandy and awkward. Surely the title of his article can be changed to Councillor William Farrar. I would do it if I knew how to change titles, or is that ability reserved? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Alvanhholmes (talkcontribs) 16:09, 15 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Alvanhholmes In terms of Beggars bush, you have a couple of options. After removing the link, you can simply put a note surrounded by comments in the text indicating it isn't the one in ireland<!--note-->, or you can use the pipe trick to a disambiguation so somethink like Beggars Bush which will make a clear link to a page that doesn't exist.
If the location already has an article, it is perfectly appropriate to explain everyting about the old name in it and make the old name a redirect to the current article or even to a section in the current article specifically about the new table. Not sure if that is what you want to do though. Having an external link in that area isn't standard.
You might be OK with William Farrar (councillor) , but as I said, there the rules against including positions as part of the article name are pretty well established. If you can find something similar please let me know, but there are many users likely to move it back if you move it in that way.Naraht (talk) 16:41, 15 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks. I have made appropriate adjustments and am happy with the Wiki naming of William Farrar (settler) I was able to link it from Cicely Jordan Farrar's page. I have also a dead link to Beggar's Bush, Colony of Virginia. What I think is really needed is a separate page for Beggars Bush, Colony of Virginia it is a short descriptive article and it is already in Draft. I believe that it will add to the collective knowledge, and it is only a few short paragraphs.

NPR Newsletter No.15 16 November 2018[edit]

Chart of the New Pages Patrol backlog for the past 6 months.

Hello Naraht,

Community Wishlist Survey – NPP needs you – Vote NOW
 • Community Wishlist Voting takes place 16 to 30 November for the Page Curation and New Pages Feed improvements, and other software requests. The NPP community is hoping for a good turnout in support of the requests to Santa for the tools we need. This is very important as we have been asking the Foundation for these upgrades for 4 years.
If this proposal does not make it into the top ten, it is likely that the tools will be given no support at all for the foreseeable future. So please put in a vote today.
We are counting on significant support not only from our own ranks, but from everyone who is concerned with maintaining a Wikipedia that is free of vandalism, promotion, flagrant financial exploitation and other pollution.
With all 650 reviewers voting for these urgently needed improvements, our requests would be unlikely to fail. See also The Signpost Special report: 'NPP: This could be heaven or this could be hell for new users – and for the reviewers', and if you are not sure what the wish list is all about, take a sneak peek at an article in this month's upcoming issue of The Signpost which unfortunately due to staff holidays and an impending US holiday will probably not be published until after voting has closed.

NPR Newsletter No.16 15 December 2018[edit]

Hello Naraht,

Reviewer of the Year

This year's award for the Reviewer of the Year goes to Onel5969. Around on Wikipedia since 2011, their staggering number of 26,554 reviews over the past twelve months makes them, together with an additional total of 275,285 edits, one of Wikipedia's most prolific users.

Thanks are also extended for their work to JTtheOG (15,059 reviews), Boleyn (12,760 reviews), Cwmhiraeth (9,001 reviews), Semmendinger (8,440 reviews), PRehse (8,092 reviews), Arthistorian1977 (5,306 reviews), Abishe (4,153 reviews), Barkeep49 (4,016 reviews), and Elmidae (3,615 reviews).
Cwmhiraeth, Semmendinger, Barkeep49, and Elmidae have been New Page Reviewers for less than a year — Barkeep49 for only seven months, while Boleyn, with an edit count of 250,000 since she joined Wikipedia in 2008, has been a bastion of New Page Patrol for many years.

See also the list of top 100 reviewers.

Less good news, and an appeal for some help

The backlog is now approaching 5,000, and still rising. There are around 640 holders of the NPR flag, most of whom appear to be inactive. The 10% of the reviewers who do 90% of the work could do with some support especially as some of them are now taking a well deserved break.

Really good news - NPR wins the Community Wishlist Survey 2019

At #1 position, the Community Wishlist poll closed on 3 December with a resounding success for NPP, reminding the WMF and the volunteer communities just how critical NPP is to maintaining a clean encyclopedia and the need for improved tools to do it. A big 'thank you' to everyone who supported the NPP proposals. See the results.

Training video

Due to a number of changes having been made to the feed since this three-minute video was created, we have been asked by the WMF for feedback on the video with a view to getting it brought up to date to reflect the new features of the system. Please leave your comments here, particularly mentioning how helpful you find it for new reviewers.

Displaytitle[edit]

I notice you are removing the italics from ship class redirects. From my reading of DISPLAYTITLE italics for ship class names are permitted Lyndaship (talk) 18:17, 18 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Lyndaship Thanx for responding... If you don't mind, I'd like to use Italian ship Etna (A5328) as the example (it seems typical). The page before I changed it (https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Italian_ship_Etna_(A5328)&oldid=837190568) was showing up on the automatically generated Category:Pages with disallowed DISPLAYTITLE modifications. The reason for this, I believe is that the redirect article has A5328 and the DISPLAYTITLE has A 5328 (the additional space). They have to match exactly other than the italicization. If the DISPLAYTITLE had A5328, then it wouldn't have shown up there. On a second question, what is the point of having this DISPLAYTITLE on a *redirect*? I believe that all articles that I did that the removal were redirects and thus it won't be shown with the italics as part of an article. Naraht (talk) 18:28, 18 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]
I did say ship class redirects. I can see Etna and Artigliere are individual ships and I can see they are wrong and should be disallowed. Compare with Glover-class frigate. Not sure if there is a point on having italics on a redirect but working on the principle there might be Lyndaship (talk) 18:33, 18 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]
LyndashipOK, we can them for the shipclasses, but for each of them, they did show up in the disallowed, which means there was something in the spacing that didn't match the actual article name. For Glover-class frigate , the DISPLAYTITLE entry was Glover class frigate , which differs from the actual title name in both the italics *and* the hyphen. If the hyphen had been there, it would have been fine. According to my contributions, I changed four.
 1. Raimondo Montecuccoli-class cruiser
 2. Luigi Cadorna-class cruiser
 3. Kumbhir-class landing ship
 4. Glover-class frigate
Do you agree?Naraht (talk) 18:50, 18 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Absolutely. Thanks for your explanation and resolution. As I said I can't see a reason why you would need italics on a redirect (only thing I could think of was if they also had a category but redirects in categories are always fully italicised which actually is wrong as the ship Prefixes should not be italicised) but on the basis someone put them in they obviously thought there was a purpose. The -class and class thing is because some time ago class was deprecated except when the class is not named after a member of the class eg Town class cruiser. Thanks again Lyndaship (talk) 19:07, 18 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Lyndaship{{LyndashipI restored and then fixed the DISPLAYTITLE on those four redirects.
I thought about Categories as well. The Italicize redirects overrides anything in the Display title, and I'm not sure that it makes sense to try to get an exception. I have done more than my fair share of redirects, my "home stomping ground" on Wikipedia is College Fraternities and Sororities and at one point we went through and made sure that every fraternity/sorority had a redirect from the actual greek letters. So ΑΦΩ is a redirect to Alpha Phi Omega eventually. Naraht (talk) 19:38, 18 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]

BTO Deleted Page[edit]

Hi! May I know the specific reasons my page was deleted? You did leave a message in the talk page (I got an email about it) but then proceeded to delete that as well so I could not really read it. It was ("Ahmedmgad65 Hi, my handle is User:Naraht and I'm an editor who specializes in greek letter organizations. Yes, Omega Phi Gamma, Rho Delta Chi and L...") And that's all I can see from the Wikipedia email. Thank you. Ahmedmgad65 (talk) 15:55, 22 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Ahmedmgad65 Didn't realize it would be *that* speedied, but basically to recap.
 1. Yes, the three groups that you mentioned have basically the same structure, but they are regional, 6,6 & 13 chapters respectively, where Beta Tau Omega has one and even those articles aren't that well referenced. (And might be deleted if no more references showing Notability were added if it went to a formal Article for Deletion process.)
 2. There are a *few* single chapter greek letter organizations about which articles have been written that have stayed on Wikipedia, but those are *much* older and/or better referenced (for example Alpha Theta or Kappa Kappa Kappa).
 3. References from the organization itself don't indicate notability, and for groups on campus, generally articles in the school newspaper aren't generally indicated to show notability either. Alpha Lambda Mu, for example, was covered in city newspapers hundreds of miles away from any of its chapters.
So to boil it down, it is that Beta Tau Omega at this point hasn't been shown to be notable enough for a Wikipedia article to be written about it. It isn't your skill in editing or missing a template, I don't think that I could create a wikipedia page about Beta Tau Omega that wouldn't have the same issues. When I google for "Beta Tau Omega" asian and Texas (which I would expect in any coverage of your fraternity), I get pages created by your group, by the school, by the APC and a few sites like linkedin that include a mention on the page of an alumnus.Naraht (talk) 16:38, 22 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]
And I wasn't the one who put the speedy template on it, but I didn't see any reason why it should be removed.Naraht (talk) 16:39, 22 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Okay! Thank you so much for clarifying. Ahmedmgad65 (talk) 16:50, 22 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]
