Speedy deletion of Shaiya

A tag has been placed on Shaiya, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. Drafts in userspace

Creating a new article is probably the most difficult and frustrating task a new editor can take on at wikipedia, so my main advice is to try and improve existing articles first to get an idea of the process.

However, if you want to be given more leeway in your article's early stages, you may wish to try creating the article at User:Nicolasjager/Shaiya and then ask for opinions as to whether it is ready to be published in wikipedia as an article (even as a stub).

You may want to consider joining the wikiprojects Video games and Massively multiplayer online games. They have guidelines about new articles, and are a community devoted to creating and improving the video game and MMORPG articles on wikipedia. JackSchmidt (talk) 21:16, 4 March 2008 (UTC)

Response to your concerns

The "articles" about Shaiya, so far, have all been lacking in content. To meet our criteria for inclusion, a subject must be notable in some way. Nothing has been said or done to assert notability. Notable does not mean cool, clever, well-written, interesting, fun to play, or anything of the sort. It means that other people, impartial third-party reliable sources have made note of this topic and written significantly about it. That doesn't mean you have to make the front of the New York Times "Leisure" section; but it means some attention must already have been paid. New, experimental, "up and coming", "gonna be big": these are not topics for Wikipedia. No ill-will is involved; but our standards must be met. If you feel there articles about non-notable topics here, thank you for noticing: nominate them as non-notable. If there is blatant advertisement here, again thank you for noticing: please notify us so that administrators such as myself can examine them. If you feel an article is about a non-notable website, then put the {{db-web}} tag at the top of the article. If you feel an article is really an advertisement, put the {{db-spam}} tag up there.

As other editors have said, creating new articles is really one of the most challenging things to do here in Wikipedia, yet folks often don't realize it and run into the buzzsaw of skepticism. If Shaiya is notable, find some significant sources writing about it (not blogs, gamer forums, etc.) and put this into a draft article on the suggest sandbox page. (Don't worry about speedy deletion. Sandboxes are left unmolested, unless they are linked to from mainspace articles (or people start linking to them from outside sites). Just don't let them sit there unimproved for weeks or months on end.) Quick hint on notability; if it's graced the pages of at least a couple of games or tech news magazines - paper or online - that aren't written by random people on the internet, it's notable. OK, here's what sprang to mind. Try merging the sections Races, Classes, Chat System, Movement, Combat, Faction PvP and PvP Challenges into a single new 'Gameplay' section. The sections Table of Faction, Race and Class combinations, and Class discriptions, Difficulty Modes, Ability Points and Skills could be condensed and added into this new section too; as they are now, they're a bit outside Wikipedia's remit. Good work with the citations, it's a good idea to get those in immediately rather than finding them later (which gets a lot of editors tearing their hair out). A little clarification is needed in the infobox; is it Windows only? Does it make use of DirectX 10 in Vista, or use DX9 compatibility mode? Another section you could start related to this is 'Technical information'. You're doing quite well - it's better than my first article was at this stage. I've also popped over to take a look at the article and try to offer dome constructive points to help out

• Lead paragraph - add information about when it was released and if it was a pure web release or if it was ever sold in stores.
• Infobox - are there any names of designers, developers, producers etc available? What input mechanisms does it support? When is the release date? Are there different dates for different territories?
• Gameplay - essentally condense everything about how the game works into one section. You're not trying to write a game guide or instruction manual, but more a commentary or analysis. It's enough information to give an idea of how the game works without writing an instruction manual. Try to use prose rather than lists.
• Storyline or Plot - describe the universe the game is set in and any background that leads up to where the game starts. If it's set to take you on a journey, describe that journey. Mention significant characters etc. Again, use your own words here
• Development - how was the game put together? What influenced the designers? What was early press speculation? Was it demonstraed at any major game shows? Were there any major delays and what caused them?
• Reception & criticism - have any reviews been made of the game? How was it recieved by critic? How was it described in magazines? What review scores did it get? Did it win any awards? Were any particular features praised or criticised?

I've got some questions:

1. Is there some way to make a template accept an undefined (or exhastively large) number of parameters? I've been told the only way to do this is: {{ {{{1}}} | {{{2}}} | {{{3}}} | ... {{{n}}} }}. While that may be satifactory for 10 or less parameters, it surely would not be nice with 1000 or more. If there's no way to allow for an undefined number, is there some way, perhaps using for loops (or while or something), to input a value (say 1000), and have it generate {{ {{{1}}} | {{{2}}} | ... {{{1000}}} }}? If so, how would it be done?
2. Is there a way I could make a list "searchable" so that only certain portions satifying the search criteria appear on the page? Ex. Suppose I had a table with columns of:

   City Name | Climate (cold, warm, hot) | Population (low, medium, high). 

   Would there be any way to set up the table so one can search for: climate=warm, population=low and have it show all rows in the table which satisfy all search criteria? So, it would show all cities with a warm climate and a low population. Would javascript or some other code be the only way to achieve this? How would I do it?
3. Is there a way to use templates from another wiki site without having to copy the code of given templates (and all templates they use)? How would this be done?

1. I thought I was quite clear, but I guess I'll try to elaborate as best I can. I basically have need for a template which must be able to take as many parameters as I give it (I don't know how many will be needed, but I know its a lot). I've heard the only way to do this was to make a template that could accept up to n values (where n is some integer), and the code for such a template would be:

   {{ {{{1}}} | {{{2}}} | {{{3}}} ... {{{n}}} }}

   Now, that's easy to do manually for n<=10, but if I need say 1000 parameters, I wouldn't want to have to write every number from 1 to 1000 enclosed in with each number inclosed in {{{}}} and separated by |. So, is there some way, I could say... tell it I need to be able to accept up to 1000 parameters without having to write all that code?
   
   :::A follow up question to this would be: Would there be any way to determine which are the second to last, and last entries and treat them differently than the rest? Ei. If I generally place ", " after each entry is there a way to instead place " and " after the second to last entry, and "." instead of the usual ", " after the last entry?

• Sorry, I still don't think I get it, but I think this might help. When you use {{foo|A|B|C}}, somewhere in [[Template:foo]], there must be {{{1}}} {{{2}}} and {{{3}}}. If there is no {{{3}}} the C will not show up anywhere, and the software wouldn't know what to do with it. • I don't think it's possible at present without writing out a lot of cases by hand; if it were possible, most likely someone would have done it by now, but all the templates I've seen of that type are just full of cases. In some cases it may be possible to just ask the user to preformat a list of parameters, but that's impractical in other cases. --ais523 12:15, 15 March 2008 (UTC)

1. I think you are missinterpretating "searchable" for "sortable." By "searchable" I mean have there be a/several searchbox(s) and/or dropdown menu(s) in which one can search through the data. So, all rows not satisfying the search criteria would vanish/hide, and only those satisfying the search criteria would remain.

• It's impossible to implement JavaScript on pages such that other users could see it, without changing the software for the entire site. If you think that searchable tables would be a good feature to have, then you might want to suggest it at the proposals village pump. If you want to be able to search tables anywhere yourself (and don't care about other users being able to search them) you might want to ask at the user scripts requests page for someone to write a user script to allow you to do that. Hi! The easiest way to copy pages across from one MediaWiki wiki to another is to use the Special:Export and Special:Import functions. Searchable tables don't exist, and to get an unlimited number of parameters in a template, you would need to code an unlimited number of parameters in to it (ie. if you wanted 2 parameters, you'd have to code 2 parameters in, if you wanted 100 parameters, you'd need to code 100 parameters in.) How do I get the table with a, b, and c entries to be inside the other table? As it is, it's misinterpretting the |s. How should it be coded? I believe I need to use:

{{!}}

and/or

& #124; (without the space)

Help Me with Conditional Categorization of Template

I appreciate if someone would tell what I need to add to User:Nicolasjager/Template:Test1 so that IF said template's url contains http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User: then it will categorize it in the category:

Category:Templates_on_User:UserName

where Username is the section of the url which gives the username: \ ex. if template is on: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:Nicolasjager/Template:Test1 it will categorize it in:

Category:Templates_on_User:Nicolasjager

or, if I'm not allowed to create those categories, replace the above with:

User:Nicolasjager/Category:Templates on User:UserName

and

User:Nicolasjager/Category:Templates on User:Nicolasjager

If the template's url does not contain: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User: then it will not categorize the template.

After about 20 minutes of messing around with ParserFunctions, I finally managed to get it to work - I have made the nessesary changes for you - feel free to see what I did.. Basically, the #switch: function takes the variable {{NAMESPACE}}, and if it matches one of the parameters, in this case there is only one (User), the entire statement will be interpreted as the contents of that parameter, which in this case is a categorisation. The category added is the one you wanted, which takes the parameter {{BASEPAGENAME}} to get the name of the root page, which in your userspace is always "Nicolasjager". works fine (adds the page to the proper category) on http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:Nicolasjager/Template:Test1/subtemplate1 but when I try the same code on http://shaiya.wikia.com/wiki/User:Nicolasjager/Template:Test1/subtemplate1 it adds the page to the wrong category:

Templates on User:Nicolasjager/Template:Test1 instead of Templates on User:Nicolasjager.

I've traced the reason for this to be that the

{{#titleparts:{{BASEPAGENAME}}|1|}}

is not returning what it should return. Is titleparts not suported on wikia? Does wikipedia have some code that the wikia site is missing from one of the base files? http://www.w3.org/TR/REC-CSS2/tables.html#collapsing-borders talks about collapsing table borders. I'm sure there's some way to collapse the bottom borders of the cells in the top table with the top borders in the cells at the bottom table.

I know I can make a table with 5 columns of length: AB, BE, EC, CF, and 100% - F. and then give colspan commands for each cell. But that's too cumbersome. Nicolasjager (talk) 02:06, 6 April 2008 (UTC)

If you assume the table has more columns than are visible, you could assign each cell colspans, like so:

Unfortunatly, that code takes away the purpose of assigning columns a width... so that the cells in the columns below have the same width. I know following your code I could just add

colspan=# width=#%

to each cell, but that would be cumbersome.

Basically, I'd like it to be like this:

g, h, i, k, l, m, don't need to be assigned any width or anything.... they just take on the width of the leading row: d, e, f.

Now, using your code, I would get:

Of course, I could add the "colpan=# width=#%" to each cell to get:

d			e		f
g			h		i
k			l		m

I've tried the only way I know to do that and it just makes the appearance even uglier, not to mention the code. I don't believe such is possible. If you'd like, you can try searching for an online HTML tutorial and testing things out in a sandbox - the HTML codes for tables do work on this site, and Help:Table provides a basic guide on how to translate them to and from wikimarkup.

Might I also ask just what this is intended for? {{helpme}} isn't for getting help with userpages (see here), but you can get some help with them at the user page design center or the user page help project. Hersfold ^(t/a/c) 00:30, 7 April 2008 (UTC)
