Feminist stripper close

This close appears quite inappropriate, particularly as an NAC action. Debate had run only one week, was focused on policy issues, and required careful evaluation. Please reverse this promptly. The Big Bad Wolfowitz (aka Hullaballoo) (talk) 23:09, 18 October 2014 (UTC)

Hello User:Hullaballoo Wolfowitz: I understand that you want the article deleted, but the close was not inappropriate. I performed a very thorough evaluation of the entire discussion prior to the closure. There was more than ample input at the discussion to draw a conclusion from, and the no consensus close was based upon on the overall arguments therein. There is clearly no consensus within the discussion for any one particular action regarding the article, and both sides within the debate have mostly presented valid, policy-based points backing their rationales.
Relisting it would be an incorrect action per the number of respondents and overall arguments in the discussion. Please refer to WP:RELIST, which states, "relisting should not be a substitute for a "no consensus" closure. If the closer feels there has been substantive debate, disparate opinions supported by policy have been expressed, and consensus has not been achieved, a no-consensus close may be preferable."
The discussion was closed in full compliance with WP:NACD. Relative to the discussion, the close took Wikipedia policies and guidelines into full account, and was not a close call; it's clear that no consensus is present. Due to the close being a no consensus one, it doesn't qualify as being a controversial decision in the manner that a keep or delete close would be relative to the overall discussion therein.
Also of note is that the two "per nom" delete !votes early in the discussion do not appear to consider commentary that was presented later in the discussion, and do not present strong arguments, simply stating that they agree per the nomination, which was later countered by several participants in the discussion.
Additionally, note that in the close I stated, "discussion regarding the article's content and scope can continue on its talk page, as can notions about a page move (to change the article's tile) or a merge", and that I added a {{Cleanup AfD}} template to the article's lead, per the discussion. NorthAmerica1000 00:25, 19 October 2014 (UTC)
I believe you are quite wrong, and that you failed to grasp a central point made by several delete !voters -- that while certain claims made in the article may have been sourced, the concepts it develops are essentially original research, and no more appropriate as a Wikipedia article than someone's unique climate change theory based on peer-reviewed observations. This argument was not properly addressed, let alone refuted, by the keep !votes, and your comments here do not take that rather central point into account. The Big Bad Wolfowitz (aka Hullaballoo) (talk) 02:05, 19 October 2014 (UTC)
Per the discussion, I wholly grasped the notion of content in the article containing original research (which was a part of the nomination) and elements of synthesis. Others in the discussion stated that these types of matters could be corrected by copy editing the article and possibly changing its name through a page move. You seem to be discounting those notions, which are stated by several people therein. NorthAmerica1000 02:13, 19 October 2014 (UTC)

I'm curious about your relisting of this AfD. There seems to be abundant consensus to not keep the article, even if there's a variety of opinions on what to do with it after it is not kept. It's your call, but I'm surprised you felt extending the debate would be useful. -- RoySmith (talk) 00:04, 22 October 2014 (UTC)

Hi User:RoySmith: Notice how User:NewsAndEventsGuy !voted to delete early in the discussion (at 12:53, 12 October 2014 (UTC)), but later on stated (in bold) that they "support the notion of this article-list" (at 17:00, 12 October 2014 (UTC)). The latter comment advocating for article retention occurred after the delete !vote, so it appears that this is their updated !vote. Perhaps that user forgot to strike their previous !vote? With this in mind, we have the nomination for deletion, an !vote to transwikify, a support for the article remaining as a list article, and an !vote to move to Draft namespace. Clearly not an abundant consensus therein for deletion, which you appear to condone in this matter? NorthAmerica1000 00:15, 22 October 2014 (UTC)
Fair enough. -- RoySmith (talk) 03:27, 22 October 2014 (UTC)
Move to userspace; questions were not acknowledged much less addressed. NewsAndEventsGuy (talk) 07:04, 22 October 2014 (UTC)
Hi User:NewsAndEventsGuy: If you wouldn't mind, please consider clarifying your stance at the AfD discussion per the above. As your commentary is worded now at the AfD discussion, your decision regarding the article is rather ambiguous. Thanks for your consideration. NorthAmerica1000 07:07, 22 October 2014 (UTC)
I suppose it might have been conditionally this way or that. Done! NewsAndEventsGuy (talk) 07:20, 22 October 2014 (UTC)
Hi User:NewsAndEventsGuy: Please consider striking your initial delete !vote and later comment in bold at the discussion that states, "I support the notion of this article-list", because a closer that is not aware of this discussion may misinterpret your intentions. A closer could also erroneously consider multiple !votes from the same user as separate ones from different users, if they don't check the signatures and notice that they're from the same user. NorthAmerica1000 07:27, 22 October 2014 (UTC)
Good process suggestion, will do NewsAndEventsGuy (talk) 12:04, 22 October 2014 (UTC)
Sorry to nitpick, but the way you did it by removing a bunch of text isn't fair to the person who responded below your comment, and could lead to their reply being taken out of context due to the omission of your content that they replied to. The preferred method is to strike out using <s>(sample text)</s>. NorthAmerica1000 12:18, 22 October 2014 (UTC)
Which ed are you concerned about? I'll ask them if its ok like it is. NewsAndEventsGuy (talk) 12:37, 22 October 2014 (UTC)
Regarding the above, User:MelanieN. NorthAmerica1000 19:55, 22 October 2014 (UTC)
Thanks for the ping. I don't have a problem with a relist, but I would have thought there was a pretty clear consensus to userfy. I should have struck out my "transwiki" !vote since I replaced it with "userfy," and I will do so now. Sorry I didn't make my position clearer. --MelanieN (talk) 20:00, 22 October 2014 (UTC)
Hi User:MelanieN. Are you all right with User:NewsAndEventsGuy removing content that you later responded to in the discussion? See: diff. NorthAmerica1000 20:10, 22 October 2014 (UTC)
I don't really care. One request to you: if you ping me, that is sufficient. It's not necessary to also leave a talkback message on my talk page. --MelanieN (talk) 20:19, 22 October 2014 (UTC)
All right, and thanks for responding. Thanks for letting me know that you use the notifications feature. Some people disable it, and then never respond to queries when pinged, hence the talkback templates from me on your talk page. NorthAmerica1000 20:24, 22 October 2014 (UTC)
Thanks MelanieN, and North since I'm paying attention now there's no need for pinging or talkbacks. Thanks for your work at AFD. NewsAndEventsGuy (talk) 20:45, 22 October 2014 (UTC)

N.B. The result of the AfD discussion was move to Draft namespace. It's now located at Draft:List of proposed scenarios and technologies for de-carbonizing Europe. NorthAmerica1000 21:00, 29 October 2014 (UTC)

The AfD was on my to do list this morning, and I just headed over there to weigh in. SNOW close! Nice! On a related note, why do we have List of bakery cafés and not List of bakeries? Wikipedia is a strange place, a mysterious, strange and terrifying place. Wait, no, I'm thinking of Transylvania. Anna Frodesiak (talk) 23:40, 22 October 2014 (UTC)

User:Anna Frodesiak: I just created List of bakeries, which I am now in the process of expanding. NorthAmerica1000 23:47, 22 October 2014 (UTC)
I love it! You are amazing. If Wikipedia was a city, and editors were businesses, you'd be Northamerica1000 Co Ltd., a major construction firm listed on the NYSE. But I wouldn't like you because you'd probably be evil because all companies rate 10/10 on the evil scale. :) Anna Frodesiak (talk) 23:54, 22 October 2014 (UTC)
Thanks User:Anna Frodesiak. Consider my work a public service for the world, and also a hobby. The framework of the article is complete, with entries from Category:Bakeries and subcategories therein used to populate it. Now that the the framework is in place, I expect you to fill in all entries with descriptions! (Just kidding!). NorthAmerica1000 00:14, 23 October 2014 (UTC)
No problem. I'll need a timeframe of around 800 zillion years. Consider it done! :) Anna Frodesiak (talk) 00:16, 23 October 2014 (UTC)

Hallowe'en

Thanks for the Halowe'en note on my talk page, same to you. Hallowe'en is not celebrated much here in Hungary, but All Saint's Day is a holiday where we pay tribute to late (i.e. dead) friends and family.

I haven't seen you around much but I've been hanging out a lot in RfD (which is a variety show to say the least) and doing lots of follow-up from that; currently I am having a bash at some railway and metro articles in and around Casablanca, which is odd as I have never been there and even Ingrid Bergman took a plane. (I suppose otherwise it would have been Brief Encounter.) One of these could probably have gone to DYK but I have used my five freebies and what with gnoming everything else I haven't made it a priority to review one back yet.

Best wishes Si Trew (talk) 06:27, 27 October 2014 (UTC)

Dear friend,

I was sincerely touched by the message you left on my talk page. For some strange reason that I still don't completely understand, very few editors have even acknowledged my existence unless they think I have done something wrong. After thousands of edits, I really have expected more interaction with other editors but perhaps that will improve in the near future. It's nice to know that someone like you has taken the time to leave me a message.

Hi User:Bfpage: Thanks. Yes, Wikipedia can be a harsh place at times. I noticed that you're a Teahouse host, and I appreciate the work that you and the other hosts do in providing assistance to editors, particularly new editors, who can be scared off of Wikipedia by users who may not always necessarily keep WP:CIVIL in mind when communicating. Thanks for uploading File:MySupermarket logo.png. The image description page currently specifies that the image is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, the image is currently not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the image was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. A question

Hello
I notice you'd edited an AfD I'd posted, so I thought maybe you could advise me on a deletion-related matter.
I was interested in reading or writing an article about the documentary series "Heart of the Dragon" from 1985. The IMDb page on it says we have an article on it (or had), but a search only turns up “Heart of Dragon”, a 1985 action film. That page's That page's edit history shows as its first edit (in September 2006) a redirect to HotD, which suggests someone moved the article that was there before, in order to write the film page.
OTOH the title is now a redlink, and create page doesn't say it was deleted; nor do we have an AfD discussion for that title.
Do you know if there is any other way of checking if we ever had an article on this? And if so, can we get it back? Moonraker12 (talk) 11:22, 4 November 2014 (UTC)

Hi User:Moonraker12: I have performed several various searches, both on the Wikipedia website and in web searches, and have found no article for the documentary on English Wikipedia. A user commented that there's a Wikipedia article for it at the IMDb listing here, but it's possible that person is mistaken. A TV Guide listing here provides a very brief overview and states that it's "A 1985 Emmy-winning, 12-part British documentary...(et al.)". Here is a source from The New York Times that provides significant coverage. If more independent, reliable sources are available that provide significant coverage of the topic, then Heart of the Dragon can be created. NorthAmerica1000 11:51, 4 November 2014 (UTC)
Ah! Thanks anyway for doing that, (and for the NYT links; I hadn't seen them) The redlink thing is a puzzle; I've left a message for the editor who made the redirect, but he hasn't been here for a while, so I'm not optimistic. Thanks again, Moonraker12 (talk) 12:26, 4 November 2014 (UTC)
User:Moonraker12: The creation of Heart of Dragon as an initial redirect to Heart of the Dragon didn't result in anyone creating an article for Heart of the Dragon, and the redirect was only in place for under two and a half hours. Thus, it appears that no article was ever created. NorthAmerica1000 13:07, 4 November 2014 (UTC)

Arina Avram

Hi,

Leaving a message here to avoid getting too off-track at the AfD (and to avoid the discussion having direct bearing on the new AfD):

I'm just curious about the close at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Arina Avram.

  1. why close at all rather than relist it until another thoughtful !vote appeared? Not saying you broke any rule by closing it, I just don't understand what good it does given the ability to renominate in such a case. All it seemed to do in this case is change the date and negate the brief discussion that did happen at the other AfD.
  2. why close as no consensus vs. delete? Again, since nobody registered a !vote other than the nom I don't think this is a big problem and your close would certainly hold up at DRV (I think), but with only two voices: the nom, whose vote is obviously delete, and another party who, while hopeful for sources, conceded they were lacking (I won't contest she seems to be lacking in sources in any case, though we are trying to look in English.). Just seems like minor support for delete with no support for keep, meaning it should probably be relisted or closed as delete to my mind.

Thanks --— Rhododendrites talk \\ 15:34, 1 November 2014 (UTC)

  • WP:RELIST states, "Relisting debates repeatedly in the hope of getting sufficient participation is not recommended".  As for delete, delete is not a proper outcome for a WP:NOQUORUM.  There is more to this discussion, and I don't want to suggest that what I have said here is all that there is to say.  Unscintillating (talk) 19:27, 1 November 2014 (UTC)
Hi User:Rhododendrites: It's possible that the article could have been deleted or soft deleted per the first AfD discussion, but it's also possible that the discussion would have been closed by another user with the same no consensus (NPASR) close I performed. In the discussion, the nominator (User:Biruitorul) posits the notion of the subject potentially, albeit very weakly, meeting WP:AUTHOR point 3 (which they described as being "rather a stretch") based upon two sources presented in the discussion, one that he described as "shady" and one as being "a slightly more credible paper". User:JTdale previously stated that they felt that Ziua Veche "is not shady as far as I can tell. It is published in print as a insert of ro:Puterea". The nominator stated that this is a matter of opinion and that they wouldn't contest the notion of credibility for the source, and also provided additional information about newspaper circulation. After this, nobody provided additional analysis of the sources regarding their reliability and the potential of the subject meeting WP:AUTHOR per the sources. Of note is that both the nominator and User:JTdale (the only two participants therein) both stated that source availability about the subject is lacking. However, the potential of the subject meeting WP:AUTHOR wasn't particularly resolved in the discussion, which had already been open for over two weeks, totaling over three weeks in duration. Hopefully the second AfD discussion will receive adequate input regarding the subject's qualification or lack thereof for a Wikipedia article. NorthAmerica1000 21:35, 1 November 2014 (UTC)
Thanks for the explanation. I don't think that I would have come to the same conclusion, since it's clear the nominator didn't change his mind and the other user, while raising questions/comments, didn't seem intent to weigh in. A no consensus close, to me anyway, assumes too much on behalf of JTdale, making his/her comments function as a keep !vote. That said, I don't want to imply a no consensus close falls outside policy/precedent as it certainly does not. It looks like a bit of a gray area and I respect your thoughtful decision. --— Rhododendrites talk \\ 21:19, 4 November 2014 (UTC)

A strange brew

When I had written this I came to think about all your fantastic lists. Do you think that it could fit into one of those? There are plenty of references on the subject, so if you want a small article to go with it I could easily make one. The post is written somewhat humorous, but it is very close to the truth. Cheers, w.carter-Talk 15:10, 6 November 2014 (UTC)

Hi W.carter. I have added an entry to List of beer styles – Types:
I checked out the sources on User:Yakikaki's talk page, but as you stated there, the sources do not cover the beverage itself. I'm having difficulty finding English-language sources. The Oxford Companion to Beer has an entry for it, (see link), but I can't access that part of the book (page 710) using Gbooks preview. I also found this abstract for the book Gotlandsdricka : traditionell kultur som regional identitetssymbol and this primary source. NorthAmerica1000 03:24, 7 November 2014 (UTC)
Thank you for taking an interest in the subject. :) I'll see what I can do about fixing a small article about it, but since it is very regional, the sources will be in Swedish. I just wanted to check if it was interesting enough. Here is one source in English. Best, w.carter-Talk 04:47, 7 November 2014 (UTC)

Copyright checks when performing AfC reviews

Hello Northamerica1000. This message is part of a mass mailing to people who appear active in reviewing articles for creation submissions. First of all, thank you for taking part in this important work! I'm sorry this message is a form letter – it really was the only way I could think of to covey the issue economically. Of course, this also means that I have not looked to see whether the matter is applicable to you in particular.

The issue is in rather large numbers of copyright violations ("copyvios") making their way through AfC reviews without being detected (even when easy to check, and even when hallmarks of copyvios in the text that should have invited a check, were glaring). A second issue is the correct method of dealing with them when discovered.

If you don't do so already, I'd like to ask for your to help with this problem by taking on the practice of performing a copyvio check as the first step in any AfC review. The most basic method is to simply copy a unique but small portion of text from the draft body and run it through a search engine in quotation marks. Trying this from two different paragraphs is recommended. (If you have any question about whether the text was copied from the draft, rather than the other way around (a "backwards copyvio"), the Wayback Machine is very useful for sussing that out.)

If you do find a copyright violation, please do not decline the draft on that basis. Copyright violations need to be dealt with immediately as they may harm those whose content is being used and expose Wikipedia to potential legal liability. If the draft is substantially a copyvio, and there's no non-infringing version to revert to, please mark the page for speedy deletion right away using {{db-g12|url=URL of source}}. If there is an assertion of permission, please replace the draft article's content with {{subst:copyvio|url=URL of source}}.

Some of the more obvious indicia of a copyvio are use of the first person ("we/our/us..."), phrases like "this site", or apparent artifacts of content written for somewhere else ("top", "go to top", "next page", "click here", use of smartquotes, etc.); inappropriate tone of voice, such as an overly informal tone or a very slanted marketing voice with weasel words; including intellectual property symbols (™,®); and blocks of text being added all at once in a finished form with no misspellings or other errors.

I hope this message finds you well and thanks again you for your efforts in this area. Best regards--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 02:20, 18 November 2014 (UTC).

Feel free to use User:Anna Frodesiak/Violet sandbox, if, of course, it is useful. :) I've omitted a few items that were dishes. Anna Frodesiak (talk) 23:52, 7 November 2014 (UTC)

User:Anna Frodesiak: All right, another table conversion in the works! NorthAmerica1000 00:10, 8 November 2014 (UTC)
Take a look at List of ovens now; all entries in table format now. Thanks for the sandbox link and your work. NorthAmerica1000 00:47, 8 November 2014 (UTC)
Nice! :) Sorry I forgot to attribute that description. Anna Frodesiak (talk) 05:17, 8 November 2014 (UTC)
Hi Anna: Unless I'm mistaken, I recall that there was some text content in your sandbox page at User:Anna Frodesiak/Violet sandbox (that you deleted) which was copied from elsewhere (likely from the List of ovens article). From memory, I recall that text content was present in the sandbox in the Coke ovens section for the Cherry Valley Coke Ovens entry. (Since it was deleted, I can't see view the sandbox to confirm this).
I attributed content copied from your sandbox page to the article in its Revision history. If text was in the sandbox page that was copied from elsewhere (e.g. the List of ovens article), it will be necessary to undelete the page and redirect to List of ovens, per copy attribution requirements. Another option would be a WP:HISTMERGE, but this is not likely possible per the number of times the sandbox page has been deleted. If I'm mistaken, and the list at your sandbox was only comprised of listings without copied text, then bullet point #3 of WP:NOATT would be applicable. NorthAmerica1000 05:55, 8 November 2014 (UTC)
You've done nothing wrong. I'm making a big deal out of nothing. It was just a single description of a single item. No worries. Sorry to alarm you. :) Anna Frodesiak (talk) 22:29, 8 November 2014 (UTC)
Just trying to keep everything copacetic. Thanks again for your collaboration, and always feel free to contact me with more. NorthAmerica1000 05:05, 9 November 2014 (UTC)
