Template:Happy New Year elves

Hi Northamerica1000, I've come across this template Template:Happy New Year elves however I noticed on the talkpage it states "This template was designed by User:Cullen328." however it was technically designed by me - Cullen had basically removed my message and replaced it with a DYK however I've had the layout since 2014[1] so is there any chance we can both be credited as the DYK work etc was his however the background and border was my work entirely so I'd like to get some recognition here :), As you added/created it I thought it was best to ask instead of just wading in,

  • Hey Dave: Just add-in what you feel is right to say on the talk page. Pinging Cullen328 here for their review. I looked into it all a bit, but I'd rather keep it simple on my end at this time. For starters, comparing the links you provided above is giving me a headache, and then I have to go back in time and figure it all out. I can do this, but I'd rather you do it. This saves me time and allows me time to be lazy. If you need me to do the research, then let me know. For what it's worth, I copy/pasted stuff to create this template, with copy attribution provided in edit summaries along the way. At any rate, get back to me about these ideas, pronto. Recent changes

  • Users who have Yahoo email addresses could not use Special:EmailUser to send emails. This has now been fixed. Emails will now come from a @wikimedia.org address. Users who get an email from you will still reply to your email address and be able to see it. [2]
  • You can now see how many categories and pages there are in the categories in Special:TrackingCategories. This is to help you find pages that could need attention. [3]
  • Markup colours for reviewed and pending revisions in the page history and recent changes and logs now match Wikimedia standard colours. The "You have a new message on your talk page" notification will have a slightly different colour. [4]

Problems

  • Because of work on cross-wiki watchlists global renaming is not working. The plan is to turn it on again on 16 December. Global renaming was turned off for a while in late November and early December as well. [5]

Changes this week

  • The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 13 December. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 14 December. It will be on all wikis from 15 December (calendar).

American Vision Windows

Hey, I came to talk about the advertising tag at the top of the American Vision Windows page. Earlier the page was up for deletion based on the issue which you closed as no consensus was found. You discussed that promotional language be avoided, so I'm trying to improve the article as much as I can and hopefully move it up on the quality scale. I would really appreciate it if you could give me some pointers on how to improve the article and avoid quasi-promotional language. It's a bit of a unique company, so upon consideration, I removed the intricate detail template I added earlier. Some detail is a good thing, such as content about its founding and general overview information, it being a Christian-run company, how the company diversified after an economic downturn in the home improvement industry, and its culture relative to being Christian-based and the company's philanthropy. Maybe the edits you performed will be enough to satisfy others (e.g. concerns at the deletion discussion). North America1000 10:45, 4 December 2016 (UTC)
I can definately see how some people would see how the company's background would make the company quite different compared to other company articles on Wikipedia. I think that the edits so far have really improved the article - especially now that I'm comparing it to other short articles with good ratings. Time to talk

I notice that you have been changing order of talk page templates per WP:TALKLEAD. Please note that that is explicitly not a prescriptive structure. My view is that the most important items are, firstly, the template which explains the general nature of a talk page (often not present) and secondly the {{friendly search suggestions}} which helps editors find sources. Other templates tend to be of lesser importance. Project templates are an especial nuisance in my view because the projects are often defunct, do little or nothing to help and are quite bulky. My view is that they should have low prominence and be buried inside a {{WikiProjectBannerShell}}.

Of course, we should not fall out over such minutiae. The important thing at this time of year is to eat, drink and be merry, right? It's dinnertime here and the menu tonight is rogan josh with bombay potato, samosa and tarka dal. And to wash it down, some fine German lager. Cheers! Andrew D. (talk) 18:45, 12 December 2016 (UTC)

  • Hi Andrew Davidson: Interesting views. I like the WikiProject banners, because they hook people up with relevant areas to collaborate. Sure, some projects are inactive, but others are not. WP:TALKLEAD is what it is, and there has been some consensus about the order of the content for talk pages. Personally, I prefer old AfD templates, old prod notice templates, etc. to be positioned below the project banners, but others prefer it to be above them (see this talk page discussion for more information). As you state, this is a bit minute in overall importance. At any rate, I'm a fan of the friendly search suggestions template; it provides a convenient and functional means to find relevant sources about topics. Thanks for sharing your opinions, and feel free to communicate here anytime. Also, enjoy that dinner, sounds pretty comprehensive.   • The cherries are sold in big jars as a special item at Christmas time and I try to stock up in the reductions after Christmas Day. They are sold by the grocer I favour – Waitrose – but I suppose you'd have trouble getting them in the USA. Maybe we could pioneer a Secret Santa scheme for the food and drink project in which we get each other a delicacy from our part of the world?   • Andrew Davidson: Checking out the first page of a search, cherries in kirsch are available in the U.S. as an imported item. Bourbon-marinated cherries, which are nice, are around in the U.S.: link. I like the idea of a gift exchange, but I'd have to think it over; I'm very shy about revealing personal details online, at least for now. Recent changes

  • Administrators and translation administrators can now use Special:PageLanguage on wikis with the Translate extension. This means you can say what language a page is in. The Translate extension will use that language as the source language when you translate. Previously this was always the wiki's default language. This was usually English. [6]
  • Wikis connected to Wikidata can now use the parser function {{#statements: }} to get formatted data. You can also use {{#property: }} to get raw data. You can see the difference between the two statements. There are also similar new functions in Lua. [7]

Problems

  • Some abuse filters for uploaded files have not worked as they should. We don't know exactly which filters didn't work yet. This means some files that filters should have prevented from being uploaded were uploaded to the wikis. MediaWiki.org and Testwiki have been affected since 13 October. Commons and Meta have been affected since 17 October. Other wikis have been affected since 17 November. [8]

  • There is no new MediaWiki version this week. There will be no new MediaWiki version next week either.

Neapolitan

We have Neapolitan pizza, Neapolitan ice cream and a type of Coconut ice that is neapolitan (Brach's). I'm wondering if there are other Americanized foods with this moniker. I'm thinking it would be good if we had 5 sourced foods, two more than I listed, for an article (not a list) on how Americans want to neapolitan-ize food, and I do think this is limited to us Yanks. I think cake would qualify (I at least see ghits for it), not sure what else. Of course, I'm not here much due to work, so when I have an idea that concerns food (and usually requires some researching skills) I drop it off here. ;) Just an interesting idea for an article that might cover the uniquely American desire to eat foods in black, white and red stripes. That would be a contrast, as I'm sure that isn't where it originally came from. Just like acoustic guitars have two kinds of cutaways: rounded (Venetian) or sharp (Florentine), yet they didn't originate from Venice or Florence. That's the $64,000 question: where did it originate from? That is what makes it an article and not a list. I bet there is conflicting data on that. A block of Neapolitan ice cream

Neapolitan ice cream was named in the late 19th century as a reflection of its presumed origins in the cuisine of the Italian city of Naples, and the many Neapolitan immigrants who brought their expertise in frozen desserts with them to the United States. Spumoni was introduced to the United States in the 1870s as Neapolitan-style ice cream. Early recipes used a variety of flavors; however, the number of three molded together was a common denominator, to resemble the Italian flag (cf. insalata tricolore).

"Eighteenth century... confectioners' shops [were] very often run by Italians. Consequently ice creams were often called "Italian ice creams" or "Neapolitan ice creams" throughout the nineteenth century, and the purveying of such confections became associated with Italian immigrants."[1]

Yes. I'm not sure if anybody uses it or if it works. The family, friends and getting out of the house works though I don't recall ever being bothered. The problem is seen more often among people who are new, a few months, and don't have the support of family and friends. It's worse for a married couple where one partner has no job and doesn't get out and cabin fever sets in. A walk to the store and post office where you meet and talk helps, even at -40. Usualy Arctic char and lake trout. I've seen the odd flatfish (don't know the type) but they are only evver seen in nets and never on a rod and reel. @Yoninah: Not really errors, just taking some efforts to simplify the main DYK nominations page, by omitting the unnecessary "Template:Did you know nominations" prefix repeated over and over again in every nomination on the main page for the "Reviewed" parameter. Question about edits to nomination pages

Hi North America, I am wondering why you are making edits like:

The collapse boxes irk me because they add to the template load on T:TDYK and I don't see the benefit. The QPQ link edits strike me as pointless. I'm wondering what your reasoning is for these edits. Thanks. EdChem (talk) 23:14, 20 December 2016 (UTC)

  • My idea was to make a few efforts to shorten the very lengthy Template talk:Did you know page. Long discussions that have been resolved serve to make the nominations page unnecessarily long and more difficult to read and parse through, particularly for prep builders.
Similarly, having the entire "Template:Did you know nominations" prefix present on every nomination also adds to unnecessary clutter on the page, making it more complex than it needs to be, with repetition of unnecessary data over and over again. Feel free to revert if you'd like. Just trying to make the page more organized. North America1000 23:20, 20 December 2016 (UTC)
  • Also, forgot to mention, the page is so long that newer nominations at the end of the page are not even being transcluded. North America1000 23:22, 20 December 2016 (UTC)
    • North America, for your information and as I understand it, the problem of the non-transcluded templates is not about the page length (which is actually longer by a few characters after collapsing); the later nominations aren't being transcluded because there are too many templates on T:TDYK. Every time you add a collapse box, you add two more templates (I think, one for the top of the box and one for the bottom), so while I appreciate your intention, the addition of more templates is counter-productive. Also, once a nomination is promoted, all of its text no longer appears at T:TDYK, so the time when the collapse is page-shortening is only brief, from tick to promotion. The shortening of the QPQ review links is harmless and if you want to do it for aesthetic reasons, I see no harm, though I would guess your time could be used more productively. @BlueMoonset: just to check, am I correct in my understanding of the template issue? I still see some merit in sparingly using the collapse templates, which are transcluded, for very long discussions, in efforts to reduce the long length of the main nominations page. However, this has to be carefully weighed against how the page is affected per Wikipedia:Template limits. Since 1) you have objected above, and 2) because some nominations at the end of the page are not being transcluded, I have reverted my additions of the collapse template to the The Global Dilemma: Guns or Butter and Y Sap mine DYK nomination pages (diff, diff).   • Thanks. I wasn't going to bother reverting as it isn't that important. I have used collapse boxes on occasions (like the Benjamin Marconi shooting nomination), so I do see the utility at times. I certainly am not any sort of expert in templates, more like a novice, really, so I could easily have misunderstood. BoringHistoryGuy: My edit count is a bit misleading, because I have performed a lot of discussion relistings (e.g. AfD, MfD) and deletion sorting at AfD. Performing one discussion relisting at AfD creates three separate edits, and performing a single deletion sort creates two. I've considered ways to reduce my edit count in these areas, but there's no real workaround when using automated scripts, which saves lots of time. It can get boring looking at my revision history seeing all those automated edits. I've considered setting up a separate account to perform automated tasks, but I may not at this time; keeping it simple may be best. Otherwise, I have a fairly diverse editing range: creating articles, although I've been a bit lazy about this for the last few months, gnomish cleanup edits (e.g. fixing formatting errors, fixing bare urls, grammar, and the like), closing discussions, and other stuff. Something we have in common, per your "glomming on a single subject": I used to focus a lot on list articles, (expansion, adding descriptions, images and sources) but haven't been doing so as much lately.
