BBC 12-hour Editathon - large influx of new pages & drafts expected

AfC Reviewers are asked to be especially on the look out 08:00-20:00 UTC (that's local London time - check your USA and AUS times) on Thursday 8 December for new pages. The BBC together with Wikimedia UK is holding a large 12-hour editathon. Many new articles and drafts are expected. See BBC 100 Women 2016: How to join our edit-a-thon. Hi Northamerica1000, I've come across this template Template:Happy New Year elves however I noticed on the talkpage it states "This template was designed by User:Cullen328." however it was technically designed by me - Cullen had basically removed my message and replaced it with a DYK however I've had the layout since 2014[1] so is there any chance we can both be credited as the DYK work etc was his however the background and border was my work entirely so I'd like to get some recognition here :), As you added/created it I thought it was best to ask instead of just wading in,
Anyway hope all is well :), Thanks, –Davey2010Talk 02:58, 8 December 2016 (UTC)

  • Hey Dave: Just add-in what you feel is right to say on the talk page. Pinging Cullen328 here for their review. I looked into it all a bit, but I'd rather keep it simple on my end at this time. For starters, comparing the links you provided above is giving me a headache, and then I have to go back in time and figure it all out. I can do this, but I'd rather you do it. This saves me time and allows me time to be lazy. If you need me to do the research, then let me know. For what it's worth, I copy/pasted stuff to create this template, with copy attribution provided in edit summaries along the way. At any rate, get back to me about these ideas, pronto. Cheers, and a happy holiday season, North America1000 11:40, 8 December 2016 (UTC)
Hi Northamerica1000, Haha no worries we're all allowed to be lazy :), I'm pretty much having a lazy day here and irl so all's cool :), Okie dokie I'll go ahead then I was perhaps afraid you or Cullen disagreeing hence why I'm here, I've already done the research - They only used it last year but anyway I'll go ahead and make the changes :), Thanks and a very Merry Christmas to you and yours too, Here have a mince pie or 5 on me :), Thanks, –Davey2010Talk 12:11, 8 December 2016 (UTC)
Yeah, I have no problem with giving Davey2010 the credit because I simply modified it and did not design it. Cullen328 Let's discuss it 16:17, 8 December 2016 (UTC)
Thanks for your reply Cullen328; pinging Davey2010 in case they didn't see your reply here. Happy holidaze, North America1000 14:19, 13 December 2016 (UTC)
Whoops sorry nope hadn't seen the reply - Thanks Cullen, Mary Kristmas, –Davey2010Talk 14:32, 13 December 2016 (UTC)

American Vision Windows

Hey, I came to talk about the advertising tag at the top of the American Vision Windows page. Earlier the page was up for deletion based on the issue which you closed as no consensus was found. You discussed that promotional language be avoided, so I'm trying to improve the article as much as I can and hopefully move it up on the quality scale. I would really appreciate it if you could give me some pointers on how to improve the article and avoid quasi-promotional language. And when those needs have been met, at what point could the tag be removed? Best wishes, SWAloha 11:11, 1 December 2016 (UTC)

Hello SWAloha: To keep the article aligned with Wikipedia's WP:NOTPROMO policy:
North America1000 01:37, 2 December 2016 (UTC)
I can see about the revenue. In what way could the tone be changed to avoid sounding that way I may ask? But aside from that I can assure you I am not a payed contributor, I'm honestly doing this because I like it. SWAloha 10:10, 2 December 2016 (UTC)
I would simply omit most of the revenue information, but not all of it, leaving the most current figures in place. North America1000 15:28, 2 December 2016 (UTC)
I removed most of the early revenue information and left it to the last three years. I also removed weasel words and replaced them with exactly where my sources came from such as the academic journals. SWAloha 03:26, 3 December 2016 (UTC)
Removed some of what I could see as excessive information while still retaining information that makes it fluent. Please do tell if any other changes should be made. SWAloha 02:15, 4 December 2016 (UTC)
It's a bit of a unique company, so upon consideration, I removed the intricate detail template I added earlier. Some detail is a good thing, such as content about its founding and general overview information, it being a Christian-run company, how the company diversified after an economic downturn in the home improvement industry, and its culture relative to being Christian-based and the company's philanthropy. Maybe the edits you performed will be enough to satisfy others (e.g. concerns at the deletion discussion). North America1000 10:45, 4 December 2016 (UTC)
I can definately see how some people would see how the company's background would make the company quite different compared to other company articles on Wikipedia. I think that the edits so far have really improved the article - especially now that I'm comparing it to other short articles with good ratings. I'd think it should do well, and if it does, maybe it could be moved to a C or B class. SWAloha 03:10, 5 December 2016 (UTC)
I have changed the article class from Start-class to C-class (diff). It could be close to B-class, but I haven't researched the topic enough to make this assessment at this time. North America1000 03:16, 5 December 2016 (UTC)
I'd say what the article essentially needs is some minor copyediting for consistency. Other than that, the article is almost complete. SWAloha 21:19, 6 December 2016 (UTC)

Time to talk

I notice that you have been changing order of talk page templates per WP:TALKLEAD. Please note that that is explicitly not a prescriptive structure. My view is that the most important items are, firstly, the template which explains the general nature of a talk page (often not present) and secondly the {{friendly search suggestions}} which helps editors find sources. Other templates tend to be of lesser importance. Project templates are an especial nuisance in my view because the projects are often defunct, do little or nothing to help and are quite bulky. My view is that they should have low prominence and be buried inside a {{WikiProjectBannerShell}}.

Of course, we should not fall out over such minutiae. The important thing at this time of year is to eat, drink and be merry, right? It's dinnertime here and the menu tonight is rogan josh with bombay potato, samosa and tarka dal. And to wash it down, some fine German lager. Cheers! Andrew D. (talk) 18:45, 12 December 2016 (UTC)

  • Hi Andrew Davidson: Interesting views. I like the WikiProject banners, because they hook people up with relevant areas to collaborate. Sure, some projects are inactive, but others are not. WP:TALKLEAD is what it is, and there has been some consensus about the order of the content for talk pages. Personally, I prefer old AfD templates, old prod notice templates, etc. to be positioned below the project banners, but others prefer it to be above them (see this talk page discussion for more information). As you state, this is a bit minute in overall importance. At any rate, I'm a fan of the friendly search suggestions template; it provides a convenient and functional means to find relevant sources about topics. Thanks for sharing your opinions, and feel free to communicate here anytime. Also, enjoy that dinner, sounds pretty comprehensive. No dessert though, eh? 🍨 North America1000 19:08, 12 December 2016 (UTC)
  • That's just the main course. There's some lentil soup to start and then some Tragana black cherries in kirsch with ice cream afterwards. Must get back to the kitchen! Andrew D. (talk) 19:19, 12 December 2016 (UTC)
  • Andrew Davidson: The cherry dish sounds phenomenal on its own. Then, along with ice cream, the flavor combination comes across as purely delicious. I'd invite myself over, but I'm a continent away. North America1000 20:21, 12 December 2016 (UTC)
  • The cherries are sold in big jars as a special item at Christmas time and I try to stock up in the reductions after Christmas Day. They are sold by the grocer I favour – Waitrose – but I suppose you'd have trouble getting them in the USA. Maybe we could pioneer a Secret Santa scheme for the food and drink project in which we get each other a delicacy from our part of the world? I'd quite like some buckwheat honey ever since I worked on that topic. Andrew D. (talk) 22:57, 12 December 2016 (UTC)
  • Andrew Davidson: Checking out the first page of a search, cherries in kirsch are available in the U.S. as an imported item. Bourbon-marinated cherries, which are nice, are around in the U.S.: link. I like the idea of a gift exchange, but I'd have to think it over; I'm very shy about revealing personal details online, at least for now. However, I'd guess that you could find U.S.-produced buckwheat honey on Amazon.com, although the shipping charges may be atrocious. North America1000 02:55, 13 December 2016 (UTC)

Neapolitan

We have Neapolitan pizza, Neapolitan ice cream and a type of Coconut ice that is neapolitan (Brach's). I'm wondering if there are other Americanized foods with this moniker. I'm thinking it would be good if we had 5 sourced foods, two more than I listed, for an article (not a list) on how Americans want to neapolitan-ize food, and I do think this is limited to us Yanks. I think cake would qualify (I at least see ghits for it), not sure what else. Of course, I'm not here much due to work, so when I have an idea that concerns food (and usually requires some researching skills) I drop it off here. ;) Just an interesting idea for an article that might cover the uniquely American desire to eat foods in black, white and red stripes. Maybe some history on why Americans use that term. See also: Smörgåsbord. Dennis Brown - 01:58, 9 December 2016 (UTC)

Hi Dennis Brown: Check out the foods below. North America1000 02:54, 9 December 2016 (UTC)
  • Neapolitan Oreo: [16]
  • I had a feeling. I think it would be a good article if you can find some sources on why we call it that, where it came from. It is obviously common and uniquely American. Dennis Brown - 00:25, 10 December 2016 (UTC)
Dennis Brown: There may be something there. Hey, in case you haven't seen it, see also Neapolitan cuisine. Can't forget that one! North America1000 13:24, 10 December 2016 (UTC)
That would be a contrast, as I'm sure that isn't where it originally came from. Just like acoustic guitars have two kinds of cutaways: rounded (Venetian) or sharp (Florentine), yet they didn't originate from Venice or Florence. That's the $64,000 question: where did it originate from? That is what makes it an article and not a list. I bet there is conflicting data on that. Regardless, I think the topic and the answers that will come from it are definitely encyclopedia material. Dennis Brown - 00:00, 11 December 2016 (UTC)
A block of Neapolitan ice cream

Hi Dennis Brown: The Neapolitan ice cream article provides some background about this particular product relative to Naples and Italy; see excerpts below. North America1000 05:06, 11 December 2016 (UTC)

Neapolitan ice cream was named in the late 19th century as a reflection of its presumed origins in the cuisine of the Italian city of Naples, and the many Neapolitan immigrants who brought their expertise in frozen desserts with them to the United States. Spumoni was introduced to the United States in the 1870s as Neapolitan-style ice cream. Early recipes used a variety of flavors; however, the number of three molded together was a common denominator, to resemble the Italian flag (cf. insalata tricolore).

"Eighteenth century... confectioners' shops [were] very often run by Italians. Consequently ice creams were often called "Italian ice creams" or "Neapolitan ice creams" throughout the nineteenth century, and the purveying of such confections became associated with Italian immigrants."[1]

  • Hello CambridgeBayWeather: Wow, I never put together where you reside at. That seems like a unique lifestyle, living way up there in the Arctic. I find that interesting, for various reasons (e.g. lifestyle compared to areas with milder climates, food and product logistics and distribution, relatively low populations, etc.) North America1000 18:10, 19 December 2016 (UTC)
It is a different world I suppose. It's not for everybody and this time of year with the darkness and the cold can be very difficult for some people. CambridgeBayWeather, Uqaqtuq (talk), Sunasuttuq 06:49, 20 December 2016 (UTC)
CambridgeBayWeather: As a side note, I'd guess you have heard of full spectrum lighting. North America1000 19:06, 20 December 2016 (UTC)
Yes. I'm not sure if anybody uses it or if it works. The family, friends and getting out of the house works though I don't recall ever being bothered. The problem is seen more often among people who are new, a few months, and don't have the support of family and friends. It's worse for a married couple where one partner has no job and doesn't get out and cabin fever sets in. A walk to the store and post office where you meet and talk helps, even at -40. CambridgeBayWeather, Uqaqtuq (talk), Sunasuttuq 01:03, 21 December 2016 (UTC)
CambridgeBayWeather: Thanks for the article link in re lighting. So, what kind of fish do people catch around there? Gotta be some good fishing there to be had, I would guess. North America1000 18:23, 22 December 2016 (UTC)
Usualy Arctic char and lake trout. I've seen the odd flatfish (don't know the type) but they are only evver seen in nets and never on a rod and reel. Fishing is good here and the Inuinnaqtun name, Iqaluktuuttiaq, means good/fair fishing place. CambridgeBayWeather, Uqaqtuq (talk), Sunasuttuq 18:50, 22 December 2016 (UTC)

Season's Greetings, Northamerica1000!
At this wonderful time of year, I would like to give season’s greetings to all the fellow Wikipedians I have interacted with in the past! May you have a wonderful holiday season! MarnetteD|Talk 19:01, 20 December 2016 (UTC)
  • Hi: MarnetteD: Thanks for the holiday cheer, the Christmas tree, and the candy cane! North America1000 19:05, 20 December 2016 (UTC)

Thank you

Thank you for correcting my silly mistakes in the name of the nomination templates that I reviewed for various articles. I'll try to do better in future! Yoninah (talk) 23:02, 20 December 2016 (UTC)

@Yoninah: Not really errors, just taking some efforts to simplify the main DYK nominations page, by omitting the unnecessary "Template:Did you know nominations" prefix repeated over and over again in every nomination on the main page for the "Reviewed" parameter. This makes the overall page simpler to read, in my opinion. North America1000 00:41, 21 December 2016 (UTC)
Oh, I see. Too bad you can't find a script to do that. Yoninah (talk) 00:44, 21 December 2016 (UTC)
@Yoninah:It only takes me seconds to do for each one. My main goal is to try to make the main nominations page more user-friendly, if possible. By making it easier for users, participants and prep builders to read and parse through it. The unnecessary wordiness of...
Template:Did you know nominations
Template:Did you know nominations
Template:Did you know nominations
Template:Did you know nominations
Template:Did you know nominations
...throughout the page for every QPQ review makes it more complex than necessary, imo. I think it helps out a bit. North America1000 00:50, 21 December 2016 (UTC)
OK, enjoy! Yoninah (talk) 00:54, 21 December 2016 (UTC)

Question about edits to nomination pages

Hi North America, I am wondering why you are making edits like:

The collapse boxes irk me because they add to the template load on T:TDYK and I don't see the benefit. The QPQ link edits strike me as pointless. I'm wondering what your reasoning is for these edits. Thanks. EdChem (talk) 23:14, 20 December 2016 (UTC)

  • My idea was to make a few efforts to shorten the very lengthy Template talk:Did you know page. Long discussions that have been resolved serve to make the nominations page unnecessarily long and more difficult to read and parse through, particularly for prep builders.
Similarly, having the entire "Template:Did you know nominations" prefix present on every nomination also adds to unnecessary clutter on the page, making it more complex than it needs to be, with repetition of unnecessary data over and over again. Feel free to revert if you'd like. Just trying to make the page more organized. North America1000 23:20, 20 December 2016 (UTC)
  • Also, forgot to mention, the page is so long that newer nominations at the end of the page are not even being transcluded. North America1000 23:22, 20 December 2016 (UTC)
    • North America, for your information and as I understand it, the problem of the non-transcluded templates is not about the page length (which is actually longer by a few characters after collapsing); the later nominations aren't being transcluded because there are too many templates on T:TDYK. Every time you add a collapse box, you add two more templates (I think, one for the top of the box and one for the bottom), so while I appreciate your intention, the addition of more templates is counter-productive. Also, once a nomination is promoted, all of its text no longer appears at T:TDYK, so the time when the collapse is page-shortening is only brief, from tick to promotion. The shortening of the QPQ review links is harmless and if you want to do it for aesthetic reasons, I see no harm, though I would guess your time could be used more productively. @BlueMoonset: just to check, am I correct in my understanding of the template issue? I don't want to be offering inaccurate advice. Thanks. EdChem (talk) 00:08, 21 December 2016 (UTC)
  • Aah, regarding the transclusion matter, there's more information at Wikipedia talk:Did you know § Transclusions on nomination page, suggested solution. I still see some merit in sparingly using the collapse templates, which are transcluded, for very long discussions, in efforts to reduce the long length of the main nominations page. However, this has to be carefully weighed against how the page is affected per Wikipedia:Template limits. Since 1) you have objected above, and 2) because some nominations at the end of the page are not being transcluded, I have reverted my additions of the collapse template to the The Global Dilemma: Guns or Butter and Y Sap mine DYK nomination pages (diff, diff). North America1000 00:31, 21 December 2016 (UTC)
  • Thanks. I wasn't going to bother reverting as it isn't that important. I have used collapse boxes on occasions (like the Benjamin Marconi shooting nomination), so I do see the utility at times. I certainly am not any sort of expert in templates, more like a novice, really, so I could easily have misunderstood. Hopefully the new page structures will help.  :) EdChem (talk) 09:04, 21 December 2016 (UTC)

I don't know. Could be. A picture is worth a thousand words! And here we had irrefutable evidence. Just like the phantom hands in the pictures with Stalin. 7&6=thirteen () 18:14, 22 December 2016 (UTC)

Xmas card

Wishing you a Charlie Russell Christmas,
Northamerica1000!
"Here's hoping that the worst end of your trail is behind you
That Dad Time be your friend from here to the end
And sickness nor sorrow don't find you."

Season's greetings

Hi, many thanks for the card, and a Merry Christmas to you. Best, SarahSV (talk) 01:19, 24 December 2016 (UTC)

Merry Christmas!

I'm wishing you a Merry Christmas, because that is what I celebrate. If you don't like Christmas or just don't celebrate it in any of its forms, then please accept a generic "Happy Holidays". If you celebrate no holidays at this time of year, then hopefully you will be satisfied with an even more generic "Season's Greetings".  :) BOZ (talk) 01:36, 24 December 2016 (UTC)

  • Hi BoringHistoryGuy Thanks, and the same to you. I like some of those unique awards on your user page (dripping faucet barnstar, thumbs up award). Neat. North America1000 00:26, 26 December 2016 (UTC)
You're welcome and thank you. The unique awards are created by User:Carptrash. The dripping faucet began a discussion about men aging (and other things dripping). Best, == BoringHistoryGuy (talk) 00:33, 26 December 2016 (UTC)
BoringHistoryGuy: I like that user's username too (Carptrash). How do users come up with these names? North America1000 00:37, 26 December 2016 (UTC)
Mine came from my niece & nephew's reactions when I pointed out historical inaccuracies in a YouTube video. They didn't call me that, but it seemed to be what they were thinking. == BoringHistoryGuy (talk) 00:42, 26 December 2016 (UTC)
BoringHistoryGuy I started out with registered editing using the name Unitedstates1000, but decided to change it to one that's more generalized. North America1000 00:46, 26 December 2016 (UTC)
How continental of you. Do you have hemispheric aspirations? == BoringHistoryGuy (talk) 00:52, 26 December 2016 (UTC)
Just a geography fan. North America1000 00:56, 26 December 2016 (UTC)

The number and variety of your edits is impressive. I tend to glom on a single subject and beat it to death. Still, working on Wikipedia is oddly satisfying. Best, == BoringHistoryGuy (talk) 12:40, 26 December 2016 (UTC)

BoringHistoryGuy: My edit count is a bit misleading, because I have performed a lot of discussion relistings (e.g. AfD, MfD) and deletion sorting at AfD. Performing one discussion relisting at AfD creates three separate edits, and performing a single deletion sort creates two. I've considered ways to reduce my edit count in these areas, but there's no real workaround when using automated scripts, which saves lots of time. It can get boring looking at my revision history seeing all those automated edits. I've considered setting up a separate account to perform automated tasks, but I may not at this time; keeping it simple may be best. Otherwise, I have a fairly diverse editing range: creating articles, although I've been a bit lazy about this for the last few months, gnomish cleanup edits (e.g. fixing formatting errors, fixing bare urls, grammar, and the like), closing discussions, and other stuff. Something we have in common, per your "glomming on a single subject": I used to focus a lot on list articles, (expansion, adding descriptions, images and sources) but haven't been doing so as much lately. Overall, I may not be contributing as much in 2017. North America1000 20:49, 26 December 2016 (UTC)
