Wikipedia and copyright

Hello Nyrobie! Your additions to Camille Vasquez have been removed in whole or in part, as they appear to have added copyrighted content without evidence that the source material is in the public domain or has been released by its owner or legal agent under a suitably-free and compatible copyright license. Rather, the release of content must be irrevocable, to the world, into either the public domain (PD) or under a suitably-free and compatible copyright license. • Also note that Wikipedia articles may not be copied or translated without attribution. Hi Nyrobie, I wanted to leave you a message to explain why some of your recent contributions (such as to Camille Vasquez and Central Mindanao University) have been undone. I can understand that it is frustrating to see your hard work removed in a matter of seconds, so I thought I would give you some more information about why that's happened.

Most of the text that you'll find online is protected by copyright and isn't suitably licensed for use on Wikipedia. In other words, Wikipedia's copyright policy actually doesn't allow such text to be copied into Wikipedia. When editors find text that's been copied and pasted into Wikipedia from a copyrighted source, or even just closely paraphrased, we have no choice but to remove it.

How then should you proceed? I would encourage you to take another look at our copyright policies, which Throast has linked in their message above. But to summarize things as simply as I can, Wikipedia's copyright rule is basically that whatever you write on Wikipedia should be written in your own words. If you write text entirely in your own words, instead of copying from a copyrighted source, or changing just a couple of words here or there, then you can be confident that your work won't be removed for copyright reasons. Of course, you will still need to follow Wikipedia's other policies and guidelines (and I'd encourage you to read through those too; they're important stuff!) but this will help you make progress without running into text copyright issues in the future.

I know there are many Wikipedia policy documents, and they can be long and confusing, so please let me know by pinging me if you have any questions about how copyright works on Wikipedia, or how to summarize what you find online in your own words in a way that meets Wikipedia's content policies and guidelines.
