Closing the Gates at Hougoumont

At the moment there is no image on commons of "Closing the Gates at Hougoumont", painted by Robert Gibb (1845 - 1932) in 1903. It is in the collection of the National Museum of Scotland. An internet search on the painting's title throws up lots of images, do you know of a suitable digital candidate that could be uploaded onto commons? -- PBS (talk) 21:36, 27 December 2015 (UTC)

@PBS: I found a pretty good-sized square-on version: although it appears on a page with an ARR copyright statement, the EXIF metadata (according to Photoshop) shows it as PD, so I won’t even need to fall back on Commons policy on reproductions to upload it with a clear conscience, as far as UK law is concerned. One thing concerns me regarding the painting‘s US copyright status: it would not yet have been PD as of 1996—was it certainly published before 1923? Otherwise it would be protected in the US under the URAA provisions. I’m prepared to assume it was & proceed accordingly, but I have a couple of other things to take care of first; please remind me if I don’t get to it in the next week or so. (Incidentally, while searching I was surprised to find this brochure, incorrectly identifying a recent painting of the same episode, by Chris Collingwood, as Gibb’s. Evidently the event has inspired a few artists.)

Oh, and sorry for not getting back to you about the Peninsular War a few sections above & a few months ago; that diff had nothing to do with me. Actually, @Meters, there’s one thing I forgot to ask earlier. The 1938 map names the ‘destination’ neighbourhoods outside the city centre: Calder, North Edmonton, Highlands, McKernan’s Lake, and Bonnie Doon. Does the 1924 map have anything like that for the western line, Jasper Place perhaps?—Odysseus1479 23:56, 17 March 2017 (UTC)

Looks good. Nice work. I may use this when I get around to writing the EY&PR article. The only differences I noticed from the 1938 route map in the Hatcher book are:

1. 76 Ave line is shown as a straight line (your version could well be correct).
2. Whyte Avenue north side stub is slightly longer than the south side stub.
3. no CNR line heading NW (to St Albert?) at upper left. I suspect your version is correct.
4. Portage Avenue line does not connect to 103 Street line. I believe this is correct since the book specifically states that the Portage Ave line was never connected to the rest of the system
5. CPR line in Strathcona goes through a tunnel under the 109 Street cross-over track at the South end of the High Level bridge. This is correct. The tunnel still exists and the streetcar grade can still be seen climbing from the end of the bridge to the road grade up the west side of the railway cut. It is now used as a bike trail.
6. The 102 Avenue line does not appear at all. It was abandoned in 1932, but I don't know when the rails were lifted, so I don't know which version is correct. The Portage Avenue line (unused many years—if ever—and not connected to the rest of the system) still appears on the 1938 map, suggesting that the 102 Ave line had already been removed. Or maybe the Portage Avenue line wasn't used but was not yet formally abandoned. It's quite possible the other version of this map you have seen is a more accurate update. Thanks for the thorough check, @Meters.

1. Thinking they add a lot of clutter, I got rid of the side-of-the-road notations, instead drawing the roadways as thick white strokes (some of which seem out of alignment—I have yet to check whether it‘s my drawing or the rendering) and putting the black stroke, which represents the track, on the side indicated by those notations (often already evident from the orientation of lay-bys or whatever they’re called). In this case the line along 76 Avenue is indicated to change sides, so I made the black stroke cross over approximately midway between the two pairs of arrows on the original. Does that make sense?
2. Will fix.
3. I got that bit from a current map: having seen it in a provincial railway map c.1930, I deduced it would have been there in 1938. I only added it when extending the drawing westward to accommodate the 102 Av ERR line. Yes, on branching from the Calder Yards line it parallels St. Albert Trail briefly, before turning north just shy of the next range road (now 156 St). I used the same railway map for the city boundaries, and also to conclude that the EY&PR spur running NW from near the west end of Jasper Av ended somewhere in the vicinity of what is now Coronation Park. I can probably find the URL if you‘re interested—just don’t remember the site offhand (Peel Collection maybe?)—there were a lot of related maps there.

6. The 102 Avenue line is from the 1924 map, including your description of the rails at the western end and of the period of service. (I have no reason to think my 1938 map, which I downloaded from here before it was deleted as NFC with inadequate rationale, is any different from the one in the book—aside from faults in digitizing.) I hadn’t considered the interpretation of what I called “former lines” as unused tracks still installed, but thought of it solely in a historical sense. And that wouldn’t explain the Portage Av line‘s appearance in the 1938 map but not the 1924. Should that be made clearer in the legend? I thought saying “lines” would avoid implying whether or not the infrastructure was still there. Maybe “former services“ or something?—Odysseus1479 04:12, 19 March 2017 (UTC)

Tartan

Hi - thanks for your note Diannaa's talk page. Just so you know where I'm coming from, I'm currently writing an article about the Knockando Woolmill. It's a Category A listed building, and I've got quite a lot of sources to use for the history of the building. I want to include a section about current usage, since the mill is still in operation (after >200 years!) producing fabric, and since it has its own tartan registered, I thought an image of that would be worth including. this is the image - if you can magic a free-use image out of that, I would be very grateful! Hmm. I see from your original post on Diaanna's talk page that you requite the threadcount to construct the vector image. The national register website doesn't have threadcount information on it - would it help if I were to register at that site to attempt to request the information, or is that something you are already able to do yourself? @Girth Summit: the image comprises more than a full sett and is high enough in resolution to count the ‘threads’ by eye; what’s actually less clear to me is what some of the colours are supposed to be (although I can measure their RGB values, so it’s not really an obstacle to making a graphic)—they seem to be using “ancient” or “muted” versions of the colours, or perhaps an explicitly unusual palette of earth-tones: Olive, Russet, Tawny, &c. instead of Green, Yellow, Red, &c. Anyway, I might just register myself, because there are doubtless other tartans I’d be interested in looking up …

Another concern I have is the UK design protection, with which I’m not familiar. This seems to me a non-copyright restriction, like patent, trademark, or personality rights, in this case preventing only the manufacture of textiles in the pattern, but Commons doesn’t seem to have a disclaimer template for it, or any specifically relevant guidance at c:COM:NCR. It can probably be covered by some verbiage in the Permissions section, but I’d like to look into it a bit more, and maybe get some advice from somewhere like c:COM:VPC.

@Girth Summit: how time flies when we’re having fun! After only a year of procrastination, I’ve uploaded an SVG to Commons. (You should have nagged—my attention span ranks somewhat below a gnat’s.) A few random observations … Not that I’ve been thinking about it continually or anything, but I haven’t come up with any ideas on improving the rendering. I did a search of UK design registrations, but didn’t find the tartan in question. Curiously, I did find a registration for a similar tartan (a different arrangement of the same colours), apparently commissioned from KW by a neighbouring golf club. (Sorry, I don’t have the link handy, but could probably dig it up if you’re interested.) Anyway, given the statement at SRT, I thought it best to add the {{Copydesign}} regardless. More generally, I haven’t found any definitive statement on the eligibility of tartans for copyright, only opinions that, in my reading, mistake copyright for other forms of IP, viz trademarks or industrial designs. Since this started on her TP, maybe Diannaa will be so kind as to take a look with regard to any copyright or licensing problems.—Odysseus1479 20:59, 31 October 2020 (UTC)

Thanks for checking, Diannaa! The ‘threads’ are round-capped dashed lines, sized to almost-but-not-quite cover a grey background. The rendering problem I refer to appears mostly in smaller images, where a moiré effect can make for uneven contributions of the foreground & background to certain rows or columns of pixels, according to their position on the raster grid, creating an impression of discoloured threads, or even of seams. At any rate, now that I have the program, it will be fairly easy to create images of any missing tartans you may come across, or to replace existing ones of poor quality—just a matter of plugging in the thread counts and deciding on an appropriate scale to represent the sett.—Odysseus1479 21:26, 1 November 2020 (UTC)

Guild of Copy Editors April 2022 Newsletter Hello and welcome to the April newsletter, a brief update of Guild activities since December 2021. Election results: Jonesey95 retired as lead coordinator. Reidgreg was approved to fill this role after an 18-month absence from the coordinator team, and Baffle gab1978 was chosen as an assistant coordinator following a one-year break. Dhtwiki, Miniapolis and Tenryuu continued on as long-standing assistant coordinators. January Drive: Of the 22 editors who signed up, 16 editors claimed 146 copy edits including 45 requests. (details) February Blitz: This one-week effort focused on requests and a theme of Africa and African diaspora history. Of the 12 editors who signed up, 6 editors recorded 21 copy edits, including 4 requests. (details) March Drive: Of the 28 editors who signed up, 18 claimed 116 copy edits including 25 requests. (details) April Blitz: This one-week copy editing event has been scheduled for 17–23 April, sign up now! Progress report: As of 11 April, copy editors have removed approximately 500 articles from the backlog and completed 127 copy-editing requests during 2022. @Viriditas: no, but we were never in touch off-wiki. I notice she made a handful of edits at Commons one day this past February. Occasional cracks in the Great Firewall, maybe, or perhaps she has an opportunity to get outside it now & then. As a shot in the dark, from this edit I guess there’s a possibility JJMC89 knows more—if contact was made via the VRT, however, I expect he won’t be able to disclose what was said. BTW I’m about to add a note to my comment at jps’s Talk, just in case you’re not watching it.—Odysseus1479 04:00, 4 June 2022 (UTC)

Blitz: of the 16 editors who signed up for our April Copy Editing Blitz, 12 completed at least one copy-edit, and between them removed 21 articles from the copy-editing backlog. Registration is open for WCNA 2022 and Mapping USA

WikiConference North America 2022 will be virtual, November 11-13. We will hold it jointly with OpenStreetMap US's Mapping USA. Our theme this year is open knowledge allies. Registration is now open here! Please register by the 10th so that we can set everyone up online on our platform. Like last year, we are planning on using Hopin. Our schedule is will be finalized and available in the next few days. We have an exciting line-up of sessions related to Wikimedia, OpenStreetMap, and the intersection of the two. Stay tuned! ArbCom 2022 Elections voter message

Hello! Voting in the 2022 Arbitration Committee elections is now open until 23:59 (UTC) on Monday, 12 December 2022. All eligible users are allowed to vote. Users with alternate accounts may only vote once.

The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.

Blitz: Our October Copy Editing Blitz focused on July and August 2022 request months; and articles tagged for c/e in December 2021 and January 2022. Drive: In the November Backlog Elimination Drive, thirty editors signed up, twenty-two of whom claimed at least one copy-edit. Thank you for the courtesy of notifying me that i was mentioned as the "alleged sockmaster" of a since-ejected WP editor who was, apparently, attempting to out a WP editor whose name i happen to know (and who has been unfriendly to me in WP for years now). Suffice it to say, i am not the sockmaster of anyone and i have no intention to out said unfriendly person, because that would be a low thing to do. Guild of Copy Editors April 2024 Newsletter Hello and welcome to the April 2024 newsletter, a quarterly digest of Guild activities since December. Don't forget you can unsubscribe at any time; see below. We extend a warm welcome to all of our new members. We wish you all happy copy-editing. Election results: In our December 2023 coordinator election, Zippybonzo stepped down as coordinator; we thank them for their service. Incumbents Dhtwiki and Miniapolis were reelected coordinators, and Wracking was newly elected coordinator, to serve through 30 June. Nominations for our mid-year Election of Coordinators will open on 1 June (UTC). Drive: 46 editors signed up for our January Backlog Elimination Drive, 32 of whom claimed at least one copy-edit. Between them, they copy-edited 289 articles totaling 626,729 words. Barnstars awarded are here. Blitz: 23 editors signed up for our February Copy Editing Blitz. 18 claimed at least one copy-edit and between them, they copy-edited 100,293 words in 32 articles. Barnstars awarded are here. Drive: 53 editors signed up for our March Backlog Elimination Drive, 34 of whom claimed at least one copy-edit. Between them, they copy-edited 300 articles totaling 587,828 words. Barnstars awarded are here. Blitz: Sign up for our April Copy Editing Blitz, which runs from 14 to 20 April. Barnstars will be awarded here. Progress report: As of 23:17, 11 April 2024 (UTC), GOCE copyeditors have processed 109 requests since 1 January 2024, and the backlog stands at 2,480 articles.
