Aikido Styles

Hello,

I'll make stubs as soon as I get the chance. I'm assuming you're referring to Yamaguchi and Homma. I'm surprised they don't have pages already!

Also...there are some dubious styles there, but I hesitated to delete them myself. I don't know what the criterion is for inclusion. Rufe (talk) 03:45, 8 April 2012 (UTC)

The styles I put under "Other organizations" are more minor, though they are organizations and some are possibly as notable as the nippon-kan. I wonder if there shouldn't be a separate page like "list of aikido organizations" in which these and others like the ASU and USAF can be included. Rufe (talk) 04:41, 8 April 2012 (UTC)

Morihiro Saito Sensei page

Dear sir,

Regarding the changes made below, with whom was this "consensus" made please? This seems unnecessarily, very limiting. some time ago someone did a very nice unbiased list, by country in alphabetical order, of notable students above fouth dan (including many live in students who studied under Saito Sensei for years), that allowed readers to find Saito sensei's legacy around the world. I think that was a better layout?

Yesterday, you deleted my addition of Shinkendo to the Japanese Martial Arts page.

--ShinkendoMain article: Shinkendo Shinkendo (真剣道, 眞劍道, Shinkendō?), is a Gendai Budo (modern martial art style) developed by Toshishiro Obata[6], combining elements of koryu kenjutsu (traditional combative sword technique), iai battojutsu (sword drawing techniques) and tameshigiri (test cutting) into a comprehensive system of japanese swordsmanship[7].--

Your note stated: "good faith edit but really Shinkendo is new and minor. It is in the List of Japanese martial arts but should not be here"

I disagree with your assertions-

  1. I dispute that "minor" arts should be excluded from listing on this page
  2. I further dispute your inclusion of Shinkendo as a "minor art" (There are currently 87 dojos teaching Shinkendo in 17 countries)
  3. I dispute that "new" is a disqualification. "gendai" means "new" (as a contrast with Koryu Arts). Is there some other standard you are applying? a cutoff year?

Note that:

  • Sojutsu gets it's own entry in Koryu arts, despite a notation of it's "minor"* status.

(*which, as noted, I believe to be irrelevant. The page is not titled "major japanese martial arts".)

  • Kyudo also gets it's own entry in Gendai arts, despite it's relatively selective membership.

I do not object to listing the arts in a different order, by relative popularity, alphabetically, or even by founding date (any of which would put Shinkendo near or at the bottom of this list).
But completely excluding the entry seems inconsistent with the purpose of the page.

Do you have any particular reason for your categorization, and further, for deleting my (rather spartan) addition wholesale?

Taekkyeon

Hi Peter, my name is seth. As a new editior on wikipedia there is much for me to learn. Thank you for the advice. It appears that you have a deep interest in Japanese martial arts is this true? As you know, Korean and Japanese relations is controversial. China too. In reality, much of Korean history has been earsed due to war. That doesn't mean they don't have a rich artistic culture that spread to Japan, back to China and Mongolia. Hello, yes I agree Subak and Taekkyeon should be merged. Grandmaster Ko Yong Woo is the inheritor of the complete Taekkyeon system from Song Duk Ki. Gm Ko says that the two are the same, but he doesn't know why the named changed or when. If anyone knows he should, unless some historical document surfaces to counter or affirm that claim. He is my teacher and yes I am biased now. Although I have traveled quite a bit and studied Martial arts for nearly 20years, The Taekkyeon system is very deep and its basics or more advanced than any other that I have seen. Maybe in ten years their will be Widea Taekkyeon Tournaments again. It will be an exciting spectator sport.

There are other controversial claims by the Korean people, that I am ommiting to include. Mary Hamilton Collins translated a Taekkyeon "introduction guide" ISBN 89-89587-06-9. On page 57 it says, that the orgin of Japanese martial arts was called Tegoi." It was at the time the founder of the establishment of Japan Niniginomikoto (seven princes of King Kimsuro in Kaya kingdom) arrived in Shindo Port Kyushu (japan) after he finished his last spiritual disciplin in Cheel Bul Am Temple in Jiri Mountain. They say that the History of Tegoi dates back to the 56th emperor Seiwa. It is recorded on the Seiwa family tree, Genji secretly handed down Tegoi.

Tegoi became the japanese pronunciation of Taekkyeon. Tegoi became known as Yawara two hundred years ago, Yawara was replaced with Jujitsu, daitu ryu, et al.

My feeling on the whole subject is that Mongolia started the whole thing over 2000 years ago. Then with the Khans conquest of Asia 1200-1400ad many peoples left the continent to live safely in Japan (koreans and chinese). In the book Guns Germs and Steel, the recent revision, the auther has a facinating chapter on Korean Farmers moving into southern Japan, which forced the Ainu people North. Mongolia also establish Tibet (another story, that the Chinese don't want to hear).

Who really cares except for us Martial art Geeks?? Good techniques are what is important. Japan, Korea, China, Mongolia. They were all in bed together. Considering Sun Tzu was writing the art of war in the 6 century BCE, i believe that is grounds for established martial art styles in that time. Not only China, but spread out. However, the original martial arts kept a tradition and can still be found in some Traditional styles. Upstarts have always learned partial systems then passed themselves off as Masters. Such forms have thrived while complete systems have stayed isolated from mass education.

UCMMA

I've added some useful information onto the UCMMA, including some useful stuff about Ultimate Ball, as well as mentioning that UCMMA were featured on a BBC One programme. Now the reason that I'm binging this up with you is because I would like to get your opinion about how much more could be added onto the page to solidify the promotion's notability. These are some good points, some of which I've already added, whilst I am looking into any sources that can verify one or two of the points you made.

Now I appreciate your opinion, as it is always necessary to take the advice from others to improve on something you been working on your own with, so that is why I am taking this seriously and hope that you will help support it's position on Wikipedia once it does go to AfD. I would like you to point out from the start of the AfD that the page is much better sourced than the previous version that was deleted, as we know how users would probably use history as an excuse to repeat a 'delete' vote rather than actually take the time to look through the page in detail to see that UCMMA indeed is a notable promotion.

One last thing as well, do you think it is worth adding in some information about mainstream shows/articles that current and former UCMMA fighters have been on? only asking because I know some great sources out there on them and if their relationship with the promotion counts towards notability then that can only strengthen a case to keep the page. I wouldn't say no to breaking down the notable fighters between who fought for top tier promotions and those who are just notable. The Cage Rage page does something similar so I guess that it couldn't do it, I will work on this right now then. The comparison to BAMMA is un-necessary for no other promotion on wikipedia does anything like this, to UK MMA fans as well as other parts of the world, everyone knows UCMMA, Cage Warriors and BAMMA are all considered the top three promotions in the UK.

I am happy enough to leave it be for the time being, I know that you seem very happy with the overall change with the UCMMA page now so I guess that avoiding the AfD until someone else brings it up is the best solution. Pound4Pound (talk) 16:08, 17 July 2012 (UTC)

Thanks for the feedback, this is only my 2nd WikiP entry & I'm still learning the ropes... the only thing I'd say is that anything 'copied from elsewhere' is clearly formatted as such & referenced ( in addition to which express permission for all such information's use on WikiP was obtained in advance)! I am hoping to receive extra citations in the near future. Understand it's not a major concern, but when you say "unjustly" do you mean that it appears to have been lifted without permission/ it's an inappropriate use (stylistically) of such material ..or something else? . I edited a page, and you changed it back. My information came from a Ranking Member of American Jujitsu and a Ranking Member of Australia Martial Arts (Chris Parker). It is confirmed information. The individuals name Krista Jacobson used to be Chris Brooks. None on my contacts who have contacts in Japan can find any of her Dojos in Japan.

I understand you are well versed in the subject matter or Martial Arts, so am I. I am also well versed in History of Warrior Societies. She is claiming things that do not link up with History.

Is there a better way that it should have been edited on my part?

Re - International Aiki Peace Week - worth keeping

Peter - On April 21, you wrote: "Non-notable, as an event does not really exist other than as an idea. Even the organization that promotes it is non-notable." in reference to International Aiki Peace Week, on a page discussing whether the page devoted to that event should be deleted.

I humbly disagree with both assertions. In its first year (2010), International Aiki Peace Week started as an idea, but almost 350 dojos, from 43 countries, found their way to our website and signed up as participants. All without paid advertising of any kind. In May of 2010, Yamada Shihan of USAF endorsed the project in his organizations newsletter (see http://archive.usafaikidonews.com/2010/2/index.shtml). A Google search currently turns up 14,200 hits for the phrase "International Aiki Peace Week". While several of those are obviously associated with the event website and the website of Aiki Extensions, the sponsoring nonprofit, more than 14,000 of those are websites we are not responsible for. Many, not surprisingly, are the websites of independent dojos who are promoting their participation in the event and seeking to identify their dojo with the idea that Aikido, the Way of Peace, belongs in the world conversation about how to reduce violence in our hearts, our families, our communities, our countries, and our world. Given OSensei's unambiguous declaration that "Aiki is not a set of techniques to overcome an enemy, but a way of reconciling the world and making all of humankind one family" (various translations of this phrase are available), the idea behind International Aiki Peace Week seems to be exactly the sort of thing OSensei would have wanted more of us engaged with.

As for Aiki Extensions - we're a 15 year old registered 501c3 non-profit founded by a dean at the University of Chicago which supports programs like International Aiki Peace Week, The PeaceCamp Initiative, Training Across Borders, Peace Dojos International, The Awassa Peace Dojo, and Aikido in the Schools, seek to bring the principles of Aikido out of the dojo and into the world. We have more than 100 dues-paying member individuals all over the world, and about 25 member dojos. We put on conferences (last year in Belgium and Virginia, this year in Germany and California), we collected thousands of dollars for Japanese earthquake relief, put out a monthly newsletter with a circulation of more than 1,000 opt-in addressees, and in general do the best we can as a virtually all-volunteer organization.

Please forgive my lack of familiarity with Wikipedia procedures, which I am sure will show themselves as I try to save the page in question. I'd appreciate any suggestions as to how best to do this.

I am writing to confirm that what I have written on Buah pukul is not from assumption or any false information. All the information I have given are from a timeline given to all lineage in the Buah pukul martial arts. My intention was to write on wiki to show people the truth of the art without any additions and variations. The article was edited to bring it in line with Wikipedia guildlines and remove the copy violation. This was done in a way not to remove any of the essential information. Yet you keep reverting the article to the problem version - that is what triggered the AfD nomination. The solution is to return to the clean, non-copy violated version and note that in the AfD. That is something nobody told me about before. But, no one stopped the many Wikipedia editors from adding the various empty results section for London 2012's various sports. At least, that is what appears to me then. Anyway, thanks for not totally erase Muay topic completely. Yip Man notable students

Saw your edit summary. Shouldn't the qualification for notable students be those who were notable for being students of his rather than just being notable as people or practitioners of the art? That was my understanding of what that infobox line was for all this time and what I've been trimming under. I.E. there's plenty of Bruce Lee articles that laud him being a student of Yip's. Same for Wong, Cheung, and Yip's sons for instance. In the same token, being notable as a practitioner (which can get you your own article here) doesn't necessarily make you notable for being a specific person's student. --Marty Goldberg (talk) 09:15, 23 August 2013 (UTC)

I absolutely agree, my concern I was bringing up though wasn't in allowing people without articles. It was that just having their own article here shouldn't be a qualification either (which is what it seemed like your edit summary was stating). They really should have to provide a reliable reference providing notability for having been a student. Not just that they were a student and they themselves are notable. And yes, the term "systema" as known in English world means just "Ryabko's Systema" (and in Russian it just means "style"). There's just one another guy who rather unsuccessfully trying to jump on their bandwagon by mixing military LARP with even more Jedi stuff, and calls it "Systema Spetsnaz". (Maybe most hilariously, the KGB logo he's using[5] is taken from an old video game.[6])
