Jenna K. Moran

Do you see anything for Jenna K. Moran (also wrote as "Rebecca Sean Borgstrom")? BOZ (talk) 13:58, 14 October 2022 (UTC)

No, BOZ, I can't find anything. Paul Erik (talk)(contribs) 22:12, 14 October 2022 (UTC)

Thanks

for the revdel cleanup. I was planning on doing it when I stepped outside to take my dogs out, but a bird flew in my front door, and that turned into a whole thing. Much appreciated. ScottishFinnishRadish (talk) 00:15, 17 October 2022 (UTC)

Glad to help. I've been in the reverse position where I protected a page while another admin did the revdelete. Teamwork! I hope the bird was okay. Paul Erik (talk)(contribs) 00:18, 17 October 2022 (UTC)

FYI

You had p-blocked an ip user so they could continue to use talk space, but this is typical of their behaviour on talk pages. Some previous and particularly offensive examples include this and this. Thought you should know. - wolf 07:34, 11 November 2022 (UTC)

Thanks. Sorry to see that. I have left them a warning; the next step would be a site-wide block. Paul Erik (talk)(contribs) 15:59, 11 November 2022 (UTC)

Hello again. I see they managed to edit-war themselves right to that 1 week block in no time. But during that, I noticed a another, seemingly separate IP account (different state, different type of provider), but also argumentative and prone to edit wars, that had previously argued against a very specific entry at RAS syndrome and now suddely popped up to revert in support of 97.x at a very disparate fish article. VPN? Meat puppetry? Should this be looked into? Cheers - wolf 18:21, 13 November 2022 (UTC)

Yes, I had noticed 198.70.2.200 as well. They have just the single edit this month, but we can keep an eye out. As for the first one (97.112.206.67), in retrospect it was warranted to have siteblocked them earlier, and I'm sorry I did not show better judgment on that. Those personal attacks were awful. They will likely show up on a different IP, however, and we can watch for that as well. I don't know about VPNs, so if you would like to ask a more tech-savvy admin about that, it would be fine with me. Thanks for your vigilance. Paul Erik (talk)(contribs) 18:52, 13 November 2022 (UTC)
No apologies needed, you're still on my christmas card list (: We do get all kinds on this project, don't we? Anyway, maybe I'll try asking one of the admins that does spi & checkuser stuff. Thanks & Cheers - wolf 19:00, 13 November 2022 (UTC)
Cheers! Paul Erik (talk)(contribs) 19:02, 13 November 2022 (UTC)

Well, I'm not sure they can help themselves at this point. I'm sitting here today wondering if I should file an SPI for evading, and meanwhile, using the same account we were just discussing above, they go and continue edit warring on the very same two pages you p-blocked them from (1 & 2). Some other editors reverted them and posted warnings to their talk page, as did I, but I also pinged you and C.Fred, as I believe you guys should be aware. Aside from seeking another block (198.x), plus an extended block (97.x), I'm wondering if perhaps these articles should be semi protected for awhile? Thoughts? (Sorry to dump this on you.) Cheers - wolf 04:22, 15 November 2022 (UTC)

Possible block evasion

Sophina at Hello Kitty (talk · contribs)

You have blocked this editor back in October for vandalism, it appears that the editor is block evasion by going back to the same articles as before [1] [2] [3] [4]. TheAmazingPeanuts (talk) 12:50, 24 November 2022 (UTC)

Thanks. I've blocked the latest one. Paul Erik (talk)(contribs) 13:00, 24 November 2022 (UTC)

Lamar phoenix3

As the blocking admin of Lamar phoenix3 (talk · contribs · deleted contribs · logs · filter log · block user · block log), I would like to point out their recent contributions to you and see if the unsourced changes to full names of BLPs are any different from their past behavior. - "Ghost of Dan Gurney" (c/t) 06:06, 25 November 2022 (UTC)

Thanks. It is the same pattern. Other editors have reverted all their edits from yesterday. I've now left them one more message, and we'll see if that makes any difference at this point. Paul Erik (talk)(contribs) 20:47, 25 November 2022 (UTC)

ArbCom 2022 Elections voter message

Hello! Voting in the 2022 Arbitration Committee elections is now open until 23:59 (UTC) on Monday, 12 December 2022. All eligible users are allowed to vote. Users with alternate accounts may only vote once.

The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.

If you wish to participate in the 2022 election, please review the candidates and submit your choices on the voting page. If you no longer wish to receive these messages, you may add {{NoACEMM}} to your user talk page. MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 00:21, 29 November 2022 (UTC)

Mattdaviesfsic - Possible Disruptive Editing

I'm a bit new to this Admin system thing, but I'm concerned that this particular user [[5]] has been deleting large but relevant sections of articles that don't need to be cited as per WP:CITETRUTH. He is doing this to miniature railway pages, specifically with undisputed information such as the names/appearances/photos of railway locomotives. A lot of this information is easily citable. It is my personal opinion that he has occasionally become fixated on removing "original research", where such removal is not necessary, without considering finding a citation or source, while in the process of more blatant original research/clumsy wording. While his work on removing original research is commendable, he has overdone it a bit in my opinion.

I got here from the active admins page - could you weigh in on this? I would really appreciate it. You might see I have a horse in this race - the Bure Valley Railway page, whose locomotives and coaches sections were deleted without warning. Zazzfasd (talk) 02:33, 30 November 2022 (UTC)

Well. The sock puppetry really ends up making matters more difficult than they otherwise would be. As for the underlying edits and reverts, I see a need for the steps at Wikipedia:Dispute resolution – not a need for any admin warnings to Mattdaviesfsic. That's probably not what you were hoping for from me, but that will be the extent of me weighing in. Paul Erik (talk)(contribs) 02:58, 30 November 2022 (UTC)
Fair enough. I don't know what warrants what around here. On closer inspection, I think the page mentioned was sort of just caught in his crossfire. It did initially look more like an info blitz to my untrained eyes, hence the contact here. Thanks. Zazzfasd (talk) 03:03, 30 November 2022 (UTC)
You're welcome. I see that some sort of discussion is happening at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject UK Railways, and you may wish to continue there. Paul Erik (talk)(contribs) 03:04, 30 November 2022 (UTC)

  • A new preference named "Enable limited width mode" has been added to the Vector 2022 skin. The preference is also shown as a toggle on every page if your monitor is 1600 pixels or wider. When disabled it removes the whitespace added by Vector 2022 on the left and right of the page content. Disabling this preference has the same effect as enabling the wide-vector-2022 gadget. The IP hopping editor from India

i think you know who im talking about, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special:Contributions/171.76.28.10 would it be possible to range block this person. this has unironically been like the 40th or 50th time they've switched IPs and evaded the block --FMSky (talk) 02:47, 1 January 2023 (UTC)

Oh yes, I know the one. I'm not an expert on range blocks, I should say. But every time I've tried entering a few of the IP addresses into the rangeblock calculator, it has come back as too large of a range. Thanks for keeping an eye out and reverting, FMSky. Block of Marny63

Hello. I'm a bit confused by your block of Marny63 (talk · contribs). Administrators' newsletter – June 2023

News and updates for administrators from the past month (May 2023).

Guideline and policy news

  • Following an RfC, editors indefinitely site-banned by community consensus will now have all rights, including sysop, removed.
  • As a part of the Wikimedia Foundation's IP Masking project, a new policy has been created that governs the access to temporary account IP addresses. An associated FAQ has been created and individual communities can increase the requirements to view temporary account IP addresses.

Technical news

  • Bot operators and tool maintainers should schedule time in the coming months to test and update their tools for the effects of IP masking. IP masking will not be deployed to any content wiki until at least October 2023 and is unlikely to be deployed to the English Wikipedia until some time in 2024.

  • The arbitration case World War II and the history of Jews in Poland has been closed. The topic area of Polish history during World War II (1933-1945) and the history of Jews in Poland is subject to a "reliable source consensus-required" contentious topic restriction.

I thought I'd bring to your attention that a new IP user, 106.212.111.163 (talk · contribs · deleted contribs · logs · filter log · block user · block log), made an edit to Cynthia Erivo (edit | talk | history | links | watch | logs) that was similar to others by previous block-evading IP users. Question

With the ongoing antics of serial evader KompressO, (their most recent activity just hours ago), would a range-block be of any use here? It's clear that the 97.112.x.x range is often used by them. Cheers - wolf 04:43, 25 July 2023 (UTC)

I had checked that yesterday – it looks like too wide a range for a long-term block. Consider an WP:RBI approach with this user. Paul Erik (talk)(contribs) 12:05, 25 July 2023 (UTC)
Thanks for checking. And yep, RBI is the way to go. Cheers - wolf 16:13, 25 July 2023 (UTC)

Cleveland’s age when meeting future wife

Why is it not appropriate to point out explicitly that Cleveland is 27 years older than his future wife? Why force the reader to discover Cleveland’s north year and calculate it him/ her self? Is the specific difference not important? Wis2fan (talk)< Wis2fan (talk) 21:13, 25 August 2023 (UTC)

This appears to be related to my revert at the article Frances Cleveland while it was featured on the main page. As I had said, you were adding something to the lead section which did not appear in the article body; see MOS:LEAD. As this is a featured article, it would have had many editors already give careful consideration as to how to present the information. Following WP:FAOWN, it would be advisable to first present your suggested change on the article's talk page. Thanks. Paul Erik (talk)(contribs) 14:56, 2 September 2023 (UTC)

  • A discussion at WP:VPP about revision deletion and oversight for dead names found that [s]ysops can choose to use revdel if, in their view, it's the right tool for this situation, and they need not default to oversight. But oversight could well be right where there's a particularly high risk to the person. Use your judgment.

New to Wikipedia - edited Kirsten Gillibrand's article

I edited her article with information about her son's current whereabouts. You reverted my edit, citing Wikipedia's official policy on Linkedin. However, that section on Linkedin, said that it is OK if it's authenticated. I think it's pretty common sense that Theodore Gillibrand himself has published his linkedin page even if you just take a cursory glance at it.

(talk page stalker) The more important policy here is the the privacy of names. This subject's family member is not independently notable, and unless there is substantial third party coverage about that family member, it is not appropriate to include such detailed content, even if they did publish it themselves elsewhere. Regards, Orange Suede Sofa (talk) 03:47, 10 September 2023 (UTC)
Thanks for offering that, Orange Suede Sofa – I agree with you. I'll just add that we don't typically go digging into people's LinkedIn postings for material for a Wikipedia article. If the subject matter is significant enough, there will be a more reliable source that has written about it; see WP:V policy, including the section on self-published sources. Bio sources

Hi Paul! I recently worked on Julie Ann Dawson, Steven Belledin, Scott Bennie, Matthew J. Finch, and Ethan Skemp, and was wondering if you saw anything more out there for any of them. I know I had previously asked about Dawson, Belledin, and Skemp, but sometimes new sources come up over time, and better to check than leave it undone. :) Anything you can find on any of these would help! BOZ (talk) 13:42, 20 October 2023 (UTC)

Hi BOZ – good to see that you are working away on the articles.

I think you can access The Wikipedia Library; is that right? Through there, you can access ProQuest, which is the database I have been searching when you stop by to ask me. I've been glad to help, of course. These topics, role-playing game writers, are not ones I am especially interested in, though. Given your strong commitment to the subject area, the encyclopedia might benefit more from your careful searches than mine. :) Paul Erik (talk)(contribs) 00:11, 24 October 2023 (UTC)

Oh OK! How do I find ProQuest from there? BOZ (talk) 01:29, 24 October 2023 (UTC)
Go to the page The Wikipedia Library. Under "What we do", click on "Database access". Follow the login instructions. In the "My Collections" tab, find ProQuest and click on "Access collection" and you're in! Paul Erik (talk)(contribs) 01:37, 24 October 2023 (UTC)
OK cool, thanks! :) BOZ (talk) 01:55, 24 October 2023 (UTC)
You're welcome. I hope it leads you down the path of finding many sources for the articles you work on! Paul Erik (talk)(contribs) 01:57, 24 October 2023 (UTC)

ArbCom 2023 Elections voter message

Hello! Voting in the 2023 Arbitration Committee elections is now open until 23:59 (UTC) on Monday, 11 December 2023.

If you wish to participate in the 2023 election, please review the candidates and submit your choices on the voting page. If you no longer wish to receive these messages, you may add {{NoACEMM}} to your user talk page. MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 00:23, 28 November 2023 (UTC)

Sam Heughan

Hi Paul Could you please leave the Sam Heughan 'talk' page alone. Your edit broke the context, and censored unresolved fan, and edit requests. A chatty tone perhaps, but in a question answer, resolved yes/no format 62.6.135.250 (talk) 19:48, 3 December 2023 (UTC)

"Sam and Chris and Freddie should do Top Gear together." "Boring... Is he on only fans ?" This kind of thing does not belong on a talk page. Please see WP:TPG for what is suitable. What edit requests are you referring to? Someone joking around and saying the page should be renamed to the character he plays on Outlander? Paul Erik (talk)(contribs) 21:46, 3 December 2023 (UTC)

  • The Arbitration Committee has announced a call for Checkusers and Oversighters, stating that it will currently be accepting applications for CheckUser and/or Oversight permissions at any point in the year.
  • Eligible users are invited to vote on candidates for the Arbitration Committee until 23:59 December 11, 2023 (UTC). Candidate statements can be seen here.

IP editor on Andrew Hyra

Hey there, I'm messaging you because you have done some reverting on this article in the past (as has Loriendrew, pinging them too)

It seems like this continuous IP editing Andrew Hyra is under one LTA as Loriendrew called out, and they're still hanging around. What's odd is that all they're doing is fiddling around with the default sort template. It's not like a problem, but apparently they're an LTA and block evading, so I'm pointing it out just in case. Panini! 🥪 17:00, 8 February 2024 (UTC)

Yes, that's the same editor. Thanks for letting me know. Paul Erik (talk)(contribs) 18:11, 8 February 2024 (UTC)

I appreciate the note--sorry, didn't realize how much work you'd put into that already. Take care, Drmies (talk) 21:38, 11 February 2024 (UTC)

Why delete valid edits?

When blocking people for block evasion, why do you also revert their valid edits:

https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Deaths_in_1989&diff=1176173457&oldid=1176166215

Is there any valid reason this edit should not have stayed? Surely the block is penalty enough ... why penalise others? Braintic (talk) 11:58, 20 February 2024 (UTC)

Just wanted to point out that the block on that LTA was(and still is after your reason change) for 24 hours. – 2804:F14:80C5:3C01:E903:6335:76BA:FBB4 (talk) 04:35, 27 February 2024 (UTC)
