Guideline and policy news

  • Following a request for comment, partial blocks are now enabled on the English Wikipedia. This functionality allows administrators to block users from editing specific pages or namespaces rather than the entire site. A draft policy is being workshopped at Wikipedia:Partial blocks.
  • The request for comment seeking the community's sentiment for a binding desysop procedure closed with wide-spread support for an alternative desysoping procedure based on community input. No proposed process received consensus.

Technical news

  • Twinkle now supports partial blocking. There is a small checkbox that toggles the "partial" status for both blocks and templating. There is currently one template: {{uw-pblock}}.
  • When trying to move a page, if the target title already exists then a warning message is shown. The warning message will now include a link to the target title. [1]

Arbitration

  • Following a recent arbitration case, the Arbitration Committee reminded administrators that checkuser and oversight blocks must not be reversed or modified without prior consultation with the checkuser or oversighter who placed the block, the respective functionary team, or the Arbitration Committee.

  • Following an RfC, the blocking policy was changed to state that sysops must not undo or alter CheckUser or Oversight blocks, rather than should not.
  • A request for comment confirmed that sandboxes of established but inactive editors may not be blanked due solely to inactivity.

Technical news

  • Following a discussion, Twinkle's default CSD behavior will soon change, most likely this week. After the change, Twinkle will default to "tagging mode" if there is no CSD tag present, and default to "deletion mode" if there is a CSD tag present. You will be able to always default to "deletion mode" (the current behavior) using your Twinkle preferences.

Hello Species84721, and welcome. There have been disputes about how this article treats Ray Heffernan's contribution, which go back at least ten years (see Talk:Angels (Robbie Williams song) as well as the article's history). At times, the article has had to be protected from editing, due to edit warring. I would expect that any potentially controversial change would first need a talk-page discussion and consensus. IP vandalism on John W. Beschter

Thank you for blocking the one IP that had been vandlizing John W. Beschter. That editor has been at it for nearly two hours and has already cycled through five or so IP addresses, so do you think you could semiprotect the page? They're already back at it. Wikipedia guidelines on quoting, and avoiding copyright violations

Hi Paul, You recently commented at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User_talk:EWLwiki, saying, "Do not put the project at risk by introducing copyright violations. You have already been warned about this. Paul Erik"

Can you provide some guidance on this topic? I sense that my sole failure to my failure to surround the copy/pasted material with quotation marks, thus flagging my contribution as a copyright violation. Am I understanding things right?

Does the use of quotation marks enclosing copyrighted material text resolve the matter of copyright?

Consider https://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/bob-woodward-rage-book-trump/2020/09/09/0368fe3c-efd2-11ea-b4bc-3a2098fc73d4_story.html, authored by Robert Costa and Philip Rucker.

One paragraph reads, "At that time, Trump was telling the nation that the virus was no worse than a seasonal flu, predicting it would soon disappear and insisting that the U.S. government had it totally under control. It would be several weeks before he would publicly acknowledge that the virus was no ordinary flu and that it could be transmitted through the air."

If a Wikipedia article is written as follows, with quotation marks as shown: Robert Costa and Philip Rucker write in the Washington Post: "At that time, Trump was telling the nation that the virus was no worse than a seasonal flu, predicting it would soon disappear and insisting that the U.S. government had it totally under control. It would be several weeks before he would publicly acknowledge that the virus was no ordinary flu and that it could be transmitted through the air."[1]

That example has about 60 words enclosed within the quotation marks. Are 60 words enclosed within quotation marks acceptable, and not a copyright violation? At how many words will quotation marks be acceptable? At how many words will quotation marks surrounding direct copy/paste be considered violation of copyright? Hello EWLwiki. You are correct that simply adding quotation marks and attribution might not be enough to allay copyright concerns. Another page to read which I think is relevant to your question is Wikipedia:Non-free content. In particular, at Wikipedia:Non-free content#Acceptable use, the guidance is that "Brief quotations of copyrighted text may be used to illustrate a point, establish context, or attribute a point of view or idea." Later it also says, "Extensive quotation of copyrighted text is prohibited." There isn't a specific word count established. For the particular example you mention, I don't think there is any compelling reason to quote the Post article, rather than imparting the information in the usual way: writing it in your own words and citing the article with a footnote. What are you recommending to be removed from the Wikipedia article? The article you mentioned does not seem to have any of the content you claim. Please explain more explicitly. Does the Wikipedia contain copyrighted material copied from some external site? The term 'squadrons' is not in the Wikipedia article. Hello EWLwiki. On June 10, 2020, you added the following text "Squadrons made up of white volunteers were empowered to use vigilante tactics to enforce laws related to slavery. Members of slave patrols could forcefully enter anyone’s home, regardless of their race or ethnicity, based on suspicions that they were sheltering people who had escaped bondage. They located and returned enslaved people who had escaped, crushed uprisings led by enslaved people and punished enslaved workers found or believed to have violated plantation rules. As University of Georgia social worker professor Michael A. Robinson has written, by the time John Adams became the second U.S. president, every state that had not yet abolished slavery had them." without indicating that it was a direct quote or close paraphrase.
The copyrighted website in question contains this quote, published June 4, 2019, "Policing in southern slave-holding states had roots in slave patrols, squadrons made up of white volunteers empowered to use vigilante tactics to enforce laws related to slavery. They located and returned enslaved people who had escaped, crushed uprisings led by enslaved people and punished enslaved workers found or believed to have violated plantation rules. The first slave patrols arose in South Carolina in the early 1700s. As University of Georgia social work professor Michael A. Robinson has written, by the time John Adams became the second U.S. president, every state that had not yet abolished slavery had them."
Your wording changes are minor and trivial compared to the content you copied. This is not a summary of the source written in your own words. It is an exceptionally close paraphrase that includes trivial original writing. That is a copyright violation, and it is simply not permitted on Wikipedia. So, please be careful in the future.   • When blocking an IPv6 address with Twinkle, there is now a checkbox with the option to just block the /64 range. When doing so, you can still leave a block template on the initial, single IP address' talkpage.
  • When protecting a page with Twinkle, you can now add a note if doing so was in response to a request at WP:RfPP, and even link to the specific revision.
  • There have been a number of reported issues with Pending Changes. Most problems setting protection appear to have been resolved (phab:T273317) but other issues with autoaccepting edits persist (phab:T275322).

  • Following a request for comment, F7 (invalid fair-use claim) subcriterion a has been deprecated; it covered immediate deletion of non-free media with invalid fair-use tags.
  • Following a request for comment, page movers were granted the delete-redirect userright, which allows moving a page over a single-revision redirect, regardless of that redirect's target.

Technical news

  • When you move a page that many editors have on their watchlist the history can be split and it might also not be possible to move it again for a while. This is because of a job queue problem. (T278350)
  • Code to support some very old web browsers is being removed. This could cause issues in those browsers. (T277803)

Varun Neelagiri, it looks as if you were adding a definition of posture to the disambiguation page Posture. As a disambiguation page, the purpose of that page is not to discuss the word posture, but to help readers navigate to relevant encyclopedia articles when they type "Posture" into the search box. There is already a link to Wiktionary at the top of that page (giving readers this link), which allows readers to find the definition of posture. Re: entry for Nancy Robertson (actress)

Mr. Erik,

regarding Nancy Robertson's year of birth (currently stated as 1971) I have a 1977 Point Grey Secondary School yearbook in which she is correctly placed in grade 9 - my brother's grade. I remember her from then and have no reason to think that she wasn't born in 1962 like all of her classmates.

I have attached a photo of the bottom part of the yearbook page which includes a photo of her classmate Cynthia Stevenson - she also has a Wikipedia entry and you'll note that her year of birth is correctly stated as

1962.

Thanks for your efforts, Kraszewo. I don't have any reason to doubt any of that. The trouble is that Wikipedia policy is not to rely on primary sources in this way; it would fall under WP:BLPPRIMARY. Basically, if no secondary source (such as a newspaper or a magazine) has published Robertson's age or date of birth, then Wikipedia probably does not have any business doing so. However, due to changes over who controlled the network with reports of a forceful takeover by several ex-staff members, the Wikimedia IRC Group Contacts decided to move to the new Libera Chat network. It has been reported that Wikimedia related channels on Freenode have been forcibly taken over if they pointed members to Libera. There is a migration guide and Wikimedia discussions about this.

Has there been any secondary-source coverage of the complaint? In other words, did any magazines, newspapers or journals publish any pieces about the ombudsman's report?   • Consensus has been reached to delete all books in the book namespace. There was rough consensus that the deleted books should still be available on request at WP:REFUND even after the namespace is removed.
  • An RfC is open to discuss the next steps following a trial which automatically applied pending changes to TFAs.

Technical news

  • IP addresses of unregistered users are to be hidden from everyone. There is a rough draft of how IP addresses may be shown to users who need to see them. This currently details allowing administrators, checkusers, stewards and those with a new usergroup to view the full IP address of unregistered users. Editors with at least 500 edits and an account over a year old will be able to see all but the end of the IP address in the proposal. The ability to see the IP addresses hidden behind the mask would be dependent on agreeing to not share the parts of the IP address they can see with those who do not have access to the same information. Accessing part of or the full IP address of a masked editor would also be logged. Comments on the draft are being welcomed at the talk page.

Dear Paul,

I'm conducting an article clean-up month focusing on Canadian biographies which have been flagged for clean up. I've had a ton of experience myself editing Wikipedia and everything about it but I recently stumbled upon something. In the context of publications, book sections, anthologies & journals, for an article (biography) mentioning the person's written work - does his publications, book sections, anthologies & journals need to be referenced in order to be mentioned on the article accordingly or does it deem removal if not referenced (especially for book sections)? I've seen WP:V but could not find any information.

Hi DC. There is guidance at MOS:BIB and at MOS:WORKS, where it says, "Lists of published works should be included for authors, illustrators, photographers and other artists. The individual items in the list do not have to be sufficiently notable to merit their own separate articles. Complete lists of works, appropriately sourced to reliable scholarship (WP:V), are encouraged, particularly when such lists are not already freely available on the internet." I don't know if I would remove them just because they don't currently have a citation, though. In the example given at WP:MOS-BIBLIO, Max Beerbohm, no one has yet added citations for his list of works. If it were brought to Featured-Article status, there might be a requirement for citations. 2021 Canadian federal election

I believe you are misapplying WP:ENDORSE when removing Conrad Black from the Endorsements. To quote:

2. Lists of endorsements should only include endorsements which have been covered by reliable independent sources.
This means endorsements should not be sourced solely to a Tweet or Instagram post, for example.

This does not read as an automatic rejection of every endorsement that isn't presented as a new story.

The National Post is one of Canada's two major national newspapers. Such a source qualifies as a reliable, independent source in my opinion. While the word endorse does not appear, the wording

  • A motion has standardised the 500/30 (extended confirmed) restrictions placed by the Arbitration Committee. The standardised restriction is now listed in the Arbitration Committee's procedures.
  • Following the closure of the Iranian politics case, standard discretionary sanctions are authorized for all edits about, and all pages related to, post-1978 Iranian politics, broadly construed.
  • The Arbitration Committee encourages uninvolved administrators to use the discretionary sanctions procedure in topic areas where it is authorised to facilitate consensus in RfCs. This includes, but is not limited to, enforcing sectioned comments, word/diff limits and moratoriums on a particular topic from being brought in an RfC for up to a year.

  • Editors have approved expanding the trial of Growth Features from 2% of new accounts to 25%, and the share of newcomers getting mentorship from 2% to 5%. Experienced editors are invited to add themselves to the mentor list.

How we will see unregistered users

Hi!

You get this message because you are an admin on a Wikimedia wiki.

When someone edits a Wikimedia wiki without being logged in today, we show their IP address. As you may already know, we will not be able to do this in the future. This is a decision by the Wikimedia Foundation Legal department, because norms and regulations for privacy online have changed.

Instead of the IP we will show a masked identity. You as an admin will still be able to access the IP. There will also be a new user right for those who need to see the full IPs of unregistered users to fight vandalism, harassment and spam without being admins. Patrollers will also see part of the IP even without this user right. We are also working on better tools to help.

If you have not seen it before, you can read more on Meta. If you want to make sure you don’t miss technical changes on the Wikimedia wikis, you can subscribe to the weekly technical newsletter.

We have two suggested ways this identity could work. We would appreciate your feedback on which way you think would work best for you and your wiki, now and in the future. You can let us know on the talk page. You can write in your language. The suggestions were posted in October and we will decide after 17 January.

New administrator activity requirement

The administrator policy has been updated with new activity requirements following a successful Request for Comment.

Beginning January 1, 2023, administrators who meet one or both of the following criteria may be desysopped for inactivity if they have:

  1. Made neither edits nor administrative actions for at least a 12-month period OR
  2. Made fewer than 100 edits over a 60-month period

Administrators at risk for being desysopped under these criteria will continue to be notified ahead of time. Thank you for your continued work.

Why have you locked the article on Steven Del Duca? The wiki page for Doug Ford and Andrea Horvath are not locked. I see there was one instance of vandalism but one instance doesn't justify locking the article. Hello, 142.112.95.28, and thanks for your interest in keeping Wikipedia articles updated – a few points:
  1. There have been repeated instances of vandalism to the article this month, as you can see here, here, here, and here, among others.
  2. It is not fully locked, but semi-locked, so that editors with established accounts are able to update the article, which some editors including User:PKT have done.
  3. Editors without accounts are able to make requests on the talk page; see Wikipedia:Edit requests. These requests are usually attended to promptly.
  4. The articles on Doug Ford and Andrea Horwath have not had repeated vandalism to them recently; decisions to protect articles ( see Wikipedia:Protection policy) are not based on whether their political opponents' articles are protected, although this might appear unfair especially during an election campaign. But see point 3, above.
  5. As this was the first instance of protection to the Del Duca article, I protected only for three days, and so it will expire soon. It could well be re-protected if repeated vandalism returns. Paul Erik (talk)(contribs) 22:21, 11 May 2022 (UTC)

  • Administrators using the mobile web interface can now access Special:Block directly from user pages. (T307341)
  • The IP Info feature has been deployed to all wikis as a Beta Feature. Any autoconfirmed user may enable the feature using the "IP info" checkbox under Preferences → Beta features. Autoconfirmed users will be able to access basic information about an IP address that includes the country and connection method. Those with advanced privileges (admin, bureaucrat, checkuser) will have access to extra information that includes the Internet Service Provider and more specific location.

Thank you for protecting this article. Apparently, there is a different John Corbett who said some inappropriate comments about the Supreme Court on Twitter and got their account suspended. They don't have an article on Wikipedia so I guess any "John Corbett" will do. Apparently, it's a common name. article with possible child porn

Hi, I was curious about the actual definition of 'hentai', and googled, then went to wikipedia's article at Hentai. There are two images on that page that are incredibly unsuitable even for a forum that does not normally censor, and they are high res if you click on them.

One of the images is the very first one, showing (forgive me own lack of censorship) a girl riding a guy's dick, showing both his and her genitals and 'liquid'.

One of the images is also of 3 young girls in lingerie.

While I don't think text should be restricted, images that are explicit and on a site accessible by _any_ age, should be.

I'm also familiar with WP: Not Censored

I get that, and understand. However, I believe like in the article above, the definition of hentai in an encyclopedia could be conveyed without the use of explicit images or child images. We all can figure out what child porn is without seeing it, and I am quite certain no printed encyclopedia in the world would have either of those 2 types of images. 174.52.56.182 (talk) 23:24, 8 August 2022 (UTC)

That User Robert McCIenon

Thank you. I figured out what was being done by copying the name to a Word document in which Times New Roman is the default font. Any serif font would have worked. Yuck. Do you know a way to request that CheckUser determine who was the sockmaster? That account is a throw-away sockpuppet used for a single malicious act. The rules for CheckUser requests are normally to specify two or more accounts to compare. In this case we don't know who the other account is, but there must be a real person inside the troll suit.
