There are just a few reviews of his novels, like this one in Library Journal. This and this were both published in the Contra Costa Times. This was published in Science Fiction Chronicle. I couldn't find anything for Sawyer or for Cain. Castle gets many many hits, but it's hard to sort through them because at first glance it seems most of them are just brief mentions. Sadly, the database does not include all newspapers and magazines, probably not even the majority of those published in North America. Anyway, I did add one citation for Cain just now, but it's just a very brief mention of him in the article, saying he's known for producing Fallout. Also a similar sort for Sawyer. the addition made to her page was within the terms for Public figures WP:WELLKNOWN Example: A politician is alleged to have had an affair. He or she denies it, but The New York Times publishes the allegations, and there is a public scandal. The allegation belongs in the biography, citing The New York Times as the source.

i realize that the citation of the first person blog is a violation but it included the original globe & mail article that was removed.

I don't think those are apt comparisons. All those other speculations have been widely reported in multiple sources; this one about Laureen Harper has not. The Norman Spector column was so contentious that the Globe even pulled it from its website. Don't let them get to you too much... reverting them pushes up your edit count. :) I'm not sure the level of disruption is frequent enough to warrant a rangeblock, although it would depend on some assessment of how much collateral damage there would be (blocking IPs that are making constructive edits). I have requested rangeblocks in the past but haven't developed the technical skill to enact them myself. I've now added Ontario Highway 407 to my watchlist; are there some others? Hi Amandaclaire4. Doppelganger Effect was deleted by another administrator, Fastily. I deleted the article about Allen because there was no indication in the article that the subject would warrant inclusion in an encyclopedia. Have you had a chance to look at the guidance at Wikipedia:Your first article? One of the key things is that articles that do not cite reliable independent sources (not simply the subject's own website) are likely to be deleted. And we're particularly cautious about biographies of living people. In any case, your work is not lost—it's just hidden from view. Closing of WP:MUSIC request for comment

I commend you for taking this on; I was looking at it as well (I wasn't involved in the discussion), and I was finding it difficult to determine an effective way to summarize it. That said, I do think there are some problems with your close:

• The numbers point to a no-consensus close. While I agree with the notion that it's supposed to be a discussion, not a vote, the discussion here indicates that the community is split on the question of whether to make the change. If there's such a split, then the supporters would need to have effectively rebutted the opposers' arguments. That doesn't appear to be the case here; if it is, I think you need to say more about how you're perceiving that.
• Your linking to WP:NOTINHERITED in your close is problematic. The supporters were not making a link to that essay, and the bulk of their comments did not appear to be focussed around that. Putting this in your close risks a perception of a supervote. Beyond that, the essay (which generally has strong consensus) does not even support your position, as it says, three of the notability guidelines, for books, films and music, do allow for inherited notability in certain circumstances.
• There is a larger consensus about SNGs. There has been a minority of editors who would like us to do away with the subject-specific notability guidelines, and they argue that every article must meet the GNG. But there is not consensus for that change on a larger scale, when it has been discussed in a larger RfC. The change that you've made to NALBUM and NSONG effectively does away with those SNGs and reiterates the GNG.

Thanks for raising this with me Paul. I've taken a look again, and a simple head count gives 22 in support and 12 against. This is around 65%. I didn't include the !votes from the immediately previous vote as that was a different discussion, and those taking part in that had their own section within the discussion in hand, though looking at it now, and including those votes (9 in favour, 7 against) wouldn't make any real difference. Looking at the comments that the keeps made, only 6 were unambiguously in favour of albums of notable musicians being in themselves notable, while some other keep comments were less clearly in favour of such albums being automatically notable: Sir Armbrust indicated that the wording was already in favour of album articles needing reliable sources so no change was needed; Robert.Allen felt the wording was useful in making it clear that independent sources were needed. As Fiftytwo thirty pointed out, there were different opinions being expressed because the wording was unclear. However, what emerged from the discussion is that there was a consensus that the wording needing amending, and that most people wanted the wording to follow the GNG guideline.

As both the headcount and the comments indicate a consensus that wording which implies that "Every album by notable musician gets own article" is not acceptable, I don't see how a close in favour of that could be seen as a "supervote". If the consensus is already there, then extended comment made by the closer is simply additional comment made for purposes of clarity. WP:NOTINHERITED was mentioned in the discussion, and implied in a number of the views, so linking to it was appropriate, though I take your point that, interestingly, the essay does mention WP:NMUSIC. Perhaps that should now be looked into?

I am personally in favour of subject specific guidelines, and have been involved in writing a few of them, and in rescuing "failed" notability guidelines so they are categorised as essays on notability - a template for which - Template:Notability essay - I created in 2009. But I am also someone who likes to follow consensus as I feel that is essential to the smooth running of the project. My view is that if there is a disagreement about the way things should be done, then we should hold a discussion, and then follow the consensus that arises from that discussion regardless of our personal feelings.

Deleting my valid and relevant external links and references

Hi Paul,

I'd like to dispute the deletion of my links added to Wikipedia and the claim that the links to information relevant and in the public interest are spam or inappropriate...which is rude and offensive.

Firstly this is wrong, and being a journalist I'm starting to get suspicious as to why other journalism links have not been deleted but mine have and I will not rest until I get a decent answer.

Example of many pages I've tried to update and my hard work has been deleted:

In the external links section of Pete and the Pirates page http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pete_and_the_Pirates, you see there is an external link for a Pete and the Pirates gig review in 2008, http://www.dailymusicguide.com/Reviews/pete_the_pirates_star_of_bethnal_green_gig_review_01092008_1713.aspx?preview=true.

HOW is this link more valid than my interview with the lead singer and guitarist of the band in 2011? To delete my link is to deprive the public of news that is in their 'public interest'. How is it that DailyMusicGuide are not accused of self-promotion when posting the link and why are there double standards?

So, sorry to be abrupt but people should not go around destroying valid contributions, sabotaging peoples' time and effort and then, after hours of work destroyed, message people with offensive opinions as to why you were deleting the work, it created a lot of work for me and wasted time. I thought the links and references were disappearing through some fault with the system...

Hello Jameelajourno, I am not Paul but I think I can address your concerns. I am sorry if you feel like you have wasted your time here, it is just that we can't have people coming and pushing links to their own websites, I hope you understand. If we did then external link sections would balloon out of control. Whatever your intentions, inserting links to your own website onto fifteen different articles in a single day certainly looks like WP:LINKSPAM. Just wait for people to link to you naturally please. Some of the comments you are referring to in your note to me were actually left by a different editor. It appears that what happened is you continued adding links after a couple of us tried to contact you on your talk page, and then the messages escalated to rude warnings to you. I am aware that it can look as if we have double standards about External links sections and what's permitted. Sometimes people add to them, and other editors are not quick to remove them for noncompliance with the external links guidelines. If someone adds many links and is perceived to have a conflict of interest, then those links are more likely to be removed quickly, reinforcing the likelihood of a double standard. Eventually, however, links that do not fit with external links guidelines and with WP:NOTLINKFARM get removed, for the reasons noted on those pages. Unfortunately, Wikipedia has had such a problem with external linkspamming (to commercial and to non-commercial sites) that as soon as a new editor starts adding links to the same website to multiple articles, it gets identified as WP:LINKSPAM. AAA! Yes, the article doesn't say he was born there. I've edited the infobox with the origin parameter to The Peg not the birth_place. I added the citation needed template for you; I knew we wouldn't be leaving it long. I guess remove it now? It was the only statement to which I could not find an independent source.

I'm going through the Indie Rock Musician category. My first thought was that I could advance stub class to start and start class to C. That's only possible if there's enough content. I am adding citations to these articles and then removing any banner tags. I know to look at the talk page for any deletion discussion as there may be other citations I didn't come across. Would you mind if I asked you to review a list of 4-5 articles every now and again? I know wikipedia is always better with more editors rather than a team of one! Martin Tielli

I need your help (and then some!). I am working on the Martin Tielli article. In my User:Argolin/sandbox5 version, I've removed the statement that he co-produced the 1997 album Luvskull. Allmusic says different. His website makes no mention of the album or the band People From Earth. Is that enough to remove it and move on?
When you get a free moment, I'd like your input on the structure of the article in the sandbox. I copied structure from Neil Peart. The article is still too rough to go live. About the Luvskull credit, I'm not certain. I see at Discogs that Martin Tielli gets a credit for "Layout" of the album. "People from Earth" get a "producer" credit on the album—was Martin a member of People from Earth along with his two brothers? If he was, then that would imply that he co-produced, but I'm not sure that he was a member of the band.

CSD

Thank you for your comments on my talk page. However, I would like to say a few things. First, I am very disappointed by the spam I have been getting from the wiki service and users alike concerning my CSD proposals. The new patrol page is a joke! Articles are backlogged almost a month, many of them are unsourced, unnotable and many more are horribly written. I did read the rules for CSD, very thoroughly in fact, and I still agree with my calls. You are an admin and that is why you get to make the final call but please don't spam my wall because I tagged a lot of articles. I read over 50 un-patrolled articles yesterday, of those 10 were speedily deleted, 6 were contested and many more were tagged with cleanup tags and sent on their way. Some of the articles tagged for deletion finally got the authors motivated enough to start improving them so I stand by that as well. I also tried to leave comments with the authors to help their articles. Some of my tags may have been mistakes but I learn from them and that's why admins get the last call. Its very rude and disrespectful though for you and others to fill up my wall concerning these CSDs. If you want people to patrol the new page, then you have to expect that they are going to tag alot of things as junk. I'm not angry with you for doing your job, I appreciate it, but at the same time I would like to do my job too. I will try and be a little more conservative so I don't overwhelm the admins but at the same time I'd to be able to patrol the new pages without fear of getting my head ripped off by my admins. It's fair if you were bothered by my comments to you, which were perhaps overly critical of your patrolling work, and I think I ought to have offered a comment more along the lines of what Bryce said here. Sorry about the impression of spamming (and of ripping off your head! good grief!) which was not my intention in the slightest. It's actually been considered courteous, and standard practice, to notify a patroller when a deletion is declined. There's been a lot of concern expressed in the community about new editors being scared away when their work gets incorrectly tagged, so I probably err a little too much on the side of protecting new editors and then scaring (or aggravating) patrollers. Frédéric Bégin

When it rains, it pours. Frédéric Bégin is the new name of the article after I moved the old one (Frederic Begin) to it. I removed the orphan tag after adding the third link. The lead I've added refers only to the series as a whole (with a red wikilink); the body has a red wikilink to a slightly different article name. I'm not asking you to create any/all the articles involved; just what is a preferred style? That's OK. Reflecting on the question, I don't think it matters. I don't remove redlinks for films/tv shows as they are generally notable. I was thinking ahead to when the series article finally gets created, one link will be good, the other won't. It'll be up to the next editor to correct how they see fit. As for the article move? Paul, I hope you're acquanted with WP:R. I know that 15 minutes of fame by appearing on realtiy tv does not meet WP:BAND. However, I'm surprised by the redirect of Chad Doucette. Usually an editor would merge any sourced content when redirecting an article like that, but in this case it looks as if there was no sourced content to merge to the Idol season article. The redirect can be reverted if sources are discovered that demonstrate that Doucette meets criterion #1. What is it that you think should be discussed? That's the problem: Process. It must be discussed per WP:BAND (as that was the tag). The edit is effectively a WP:DEL by one editor. There are many trigger happy deletionists out there. You and I have seen articles brought before the WP:DEL process, the most recent Darlings of Chelsea, only to fail as the nominator did not do a proper search for notability. Ah, okay I think I understand what you mean now. You're suggesting that a discussion be required before redirecting an article and effectively deleting all its content. Sometimes I wish that were so—for the very reasons you're pointing out—but it is not. What WP:DEL#Redirection actually says is, "Sometimes an unsuitable article may have a title that would make a useful redirect. In these cases, deletion is not required; any user can boldly redirect to another article. WP:BRD is not WP:GUIDELINE (is that relevant?). The Purposes [scope] section of WP:R does not list WP:NOTABILITY or WP:VERIFY. I believe that the "process" at WP:R is a back door to deletion without going through WP:DEL. This process is not an effective deletion: it is deletion of an article. This reminds me of a time in 2010 when an editor was going through album articles, declaring them "non-notable" without indicating if he had looked for sources, and redirecting them to their artist page. Here is an example, which I noticed months later, reverted it, and then fixed it by clarifying notability and adding multiple sources. For unadvertised redirects, you may want to see Category:Redirect-Class Canadian music articles. Many of these musician/band articles remain members under Category:Canadian music. I added them to this redirect category dispite WP:ASTONISH. I don't know what to do with them.

Back to the Chad Doucette redirect. I don't believe that many editors are in compliance with Wikipedia:R#Categorizing redirect pages. All "Disucssion/Talk" pages have categories. For example, any Canadian music article tagged with the Template:WikiProject Canada having parameter set needs-photo=yes will be a member of Category:Canadian music articles needing photographs. With a redirect only on the "main" page, the article (ie the "talk page") will still be a member of the Category:Canadian music articles needing photographs and every other cat on the Discussion page. Paul, when you have a moment, can you please have a look at the above article? I've quoted William New of Groovy Religion from Chart magazine. They reprinted his quote in the 30 June 2004 from the original 30 June 1996 article. The reprint omitted the final sentence. Is it shown properly? I've meant to create this article for a while. MSU Interview

Dear Paul Erik,

My name is Jonathan Obar user:Jaobar, I'm a professor in the College of Communication Arts and Sciences at Michigan State University and a Teaching Fellow with the Wikimedia Foundation's Education Program. This semester I've been running a little experiment at MSU, a class where we teach students about becoming Wikipedia administrators. Not a lot is known about your community, and our students (who are fascinated by wiki-culture by the way!) want to learn how you do what you do, and why you do it. A while back I proposed this idea (the class) to the community HERE, where it was met mainly with positive feedback. Anyhow, I'd like my students to speak with a few administrators to get a sense of admin experiences, training, motivations, likes, dislikes, etc. We were wondering if you'd be interested in speaking with one of our students.

So a few things about the interviews:

• Interviews will last between 15 and 30 minutes.
• Interviews can be conducted over skype (preferred), IRC or email. (You choose the form of communication based upon your comfort level, time, etc.)
• All interviews will be completely anonymous, meaning that you (real name and/or pseudonym) will never be identified in any of our materials, unless you give the interviewer permission to do so.
• All interviews will be completely voluntary. You are under no obligation to say yes to an interview, and can say no and stop or leave the interview at any time.
• The entire interview process is being overseen by MSU's institutional review board (ethics review). This means that all questions have been approved by the university and all students have been trained how to conduct interviews ethically and properly.

Bottom line is that we really need your help, and would really appreciate the opportunity to speak with you. WP:NALBUMS and WP:NSONG

Paul, can you help me with these two guidelines? Note 5: "Redirection of such song titles if they are non-notable has thus to be to some other, appropriate target." What does this mean? Mabye inquire at the guideline? Is it a case of why use five words when fifty will do? :)

At one point, I thought songs had to chart to be notable to be incuded in wikipedia. It is bIzzaro to me that a song played on the radio gives notablity to the music group per band# 11, but not to the actual album or track. Same for #2 and #3 WP:BAND. What am I missing? For most modern-era songs, we merge them or redirect them to the album or the artist article if there is little to say about the song itself. For old songs it might not be so clear what a suitable target is. Redirection of such song titles if they are non-notable has thus to be to some other, appropriate target. If a song is not notable enough for a separate article, and there is no album to redirect to, and no artist to redirect to (perhaps because it was not recorded by any artist, or not just one artist) then another target would be chosen. I can't give you an example because I have not been involved in discussions of any such articles.

Songs that have charted often get their own articles, but the more important point is whether or not there are multiple reliable sources that discuss the song, regardless of charting. I personally think there is an advantage to having songs as separate articles even if there's not a lot to write about them, but many editors take the position that brief articles about songs that only give information like chart position and credits should not get separate articles and it's better to cover them in album articles or artist articles—so the compromise in WP:NSONG is "articles unlikely ever to grow beyond stubs should be merged to articles about an artist or album." An example: Many editors (unlike me) would take the position that it's better to lengthen the article Neon Bible with the information in No Cars Go, instead of having No Cars Go as a separate article. So it's more a question of where the information goes, rather than a question of having or not having the information. Does that help to clarify? Hey Paul, thanks for your time (again) but they only broke-up once before 1980. My understanding of Template:Infobox_musical_artist#years_active and the related Category:Musical groups by year of reestablishment is that this 1980 category does not apply for The Quid. The group didn't go on tour or release anything new. Therefore the group should have in the infobox years active: 1964-yyyy. The group "came together" for a concert in 1980. I've added Category:1980 in Canadian music to the article instead (when I get to creating the article 1980 in Canadian music, I'll mention the concert). • I noticed that you removed my CSD notice. Is that ok - I thought that they should be challanged and then discused at Afd if the problem has not been redressed and nominator wishes to persue the  ?
• THe article is also written as an advert - a comlaint uncorrected for some years - could it be that this is not an article but just an advert ?
• The CSD notice was not friviouls - the article many year old article is unsourced and not likely to get a sourced ever. You pointed out that this is an important retailer, but how does that make it notable? - how about retailor number 11, 12.. 112 and so on after all they are all just lumber stores? So where do you think we should draw the line?
• Do you recommend that I also use the argument of longevity to demonstrate WP:N at AFD?
• Please advise how to hadle this ?

Hello BO. Thanks for the note. I didn't think that it met criteria for speedy deletion, which is only for uncontroversial deletions, "the most obvious cases" as it says at WP:CSD. This is a company that has existed since the 1950s and operates in 30 states [21], and is big enough to have been the title sponsor of a notable golf tournament. I'm not sure where to draw the line, but I would think this would be a matter for AfD rather than for speedy. Certainly the best way to demonstrate WP:N at AfD would be with third-party sources that provide significant coverage of this company. I haven't done a detailed search myself, just a quick one with Google News. After you blocked User:98.248.10.236, he/she used another IP address to make the same reversion again on the Carousel (musical) page. See this. Note also the COPYVIO that this user did yesterday here (see also this). So I checked out the other edits made by this sock, and I saw this. I recommend that you also block the sock and send whatever explanation you think might help this person understand that we're trying to build a serious encyclopedia here. Music mystery

I've got a mystery for you, which you may or may not be interested in helping to solve (fine if not, but I thought I'd ask at least.) I recently completed an article about the 1980s one semi-hit wonders Jolly Tambourine Man, during which all of the available sources said that one of the guest musicians on that semi-hit was Caroline Savage of Fifth Column.

I cannot find any evidence that Fifth Column ever had a member named Caroline Savage; sources that are specifically about JTM are the only ones in existence that make the assertion. However, FC did have a member named Caroline Azar, which is where the problem comes in: while the likeliest explanation (or at least the one that satisfies Occam's razor) is that Caroline Azar and Caroline Savage are the same person, under WP:NOR I can't simply presume that without a proper source. But I also cannot find a real source which explicitly states that Caroline Azar was ever known as "Savage", nor any source which links Caroline Azar to Jolly Tambourine Man at all.

Do you have any potential input on this dilemma? Or would you suggest that it's not worth worrying about? Bearcat (talk) 16:45, 17 August 2012 (UTC)

Another user reverted my attempt to make the IP user's contributions less biased, though, and then removed the paragraph altogether, and now IP guy has added a new version of the paragraph back, which is slightly less biased than the original but still misleading. The non-IP user who removed my edits turns out to be an administrator, and after telling me that one of the edits I made (changing the title of the section to 'Allegations of bias in favour of the Liberal Party', rather than the more general 'Allegations of liberal bias') needs to be discussed on the talk page, he seems to just ignored my explanation. Any advice on how to deal with this? I don't have any personal stake in it, but I happen to be a professional political scientist, and imprecision like this gets on my nerves. All of the major political parties in Canada endorse a variant of liberal ideology, and the text in that section of the article is specifically about the Liberal Party. I was wondering if you would help me with a small project. On the D&D Wikiproject, we have a number of articles with the {{BLP sources}} template. I have been working with two other editors to get those articles sourced; one of them went about as far as we can with HighBeam, and the other has been getting to it, well, rather slowly. I think we have successfully sourced at least 5 articles so far where we had enough sources to remove the tag without any objections. These are a bit difficult to search for because their names on their own turn up pages and pages of unrelated hits (of similarly-named people). "S. John Ross" on its own had hundreds of hits, but when combined with "GURPS" turned up nothing. For Paul Hume, I tried his name in combination with "Shadowrun" and "Bushido" and found nothing. For "Jonathan M. Thompson" I found nothing (just a few hits about other people with the same name), but might he be credited under other variations of his name? So far I have mostly bugged you about BLPs (hopefully not too much?) and in the process I realized that your database also has book reviews in it. I'm thinking that at least part of the time, book reviews also contain commentary which would be useful for sourcing articles about fictional characters. In this case, Goldmoon and Raistlin Majere from the Dragonlance books are in dispute, so I was wondering if you can find anything about them? • Nothing for Caramon. For Tasslehoff Burrfoot, there is one review: Cannon, Peter. "Dragons of a Vanished Moon: The War of Souls Volume Three" Publishers Weekly 249. 19 (May 13, 2002): 56. It has one sentence about him: "Takhisis's most feared foe turns out to be a kender, Tasslehoff Burrfoot, who possesses the Device of Time Journeying, an instrument that could smash all Takhisis's ambitions with a single push of a button."
• For Tanis Half-Elven, also one review with just a little: Cassada, Jackie. "Dragons of the Highlord Skies" Library Journal 132. 11 (Jun 15, 2007): 54. "Highlord Kitiara Uth Matar learns that a former lover, Tanis Half-Elven, is among the small group of heroes that oppose the Highlords and their Dark Queen. As she attempts to prove her loyalty to her superiors by convincing an undead knight to join the dragon armies, Tanis and his companions, including the elf princess Laurana, Kitiara's rival, seek their destiny in the icy fastness of Ice Wall Castle."
• This also says a little about Tanis.
• For Riverwind, all I found was the QandA with Larry Elmore previously mentioned: "Another thing was that Margaret had always envisioned Goldmoon and Riverwind as Native American with a Celtic touch. Keith painted them that way very much so, and Margaret liked that. I think I was the first person to paint Riverwind, and he looked very Native American."
• For Kitiara Uth Matar, there's the above quote from the Library Journal review. Also "Dragons of the Highlord Skies: The Lost Chronicles, Volume Two" Publishers Weekly 254. 20 (May 14, 2007): 28.

I have restored Tasslehoff Burrfoot, Tanis Half-Elven, Riverwind, and Kitiara uth Matar; would you mind adding the sources you found to those articles? We will try to find more for each of those characters.

Also, could you add something from the Dragons of a Vanished Moon review to The War of Souls, and also something from the Dragons of the Highlord Skies review to its article?
