Photo Copyright

Hey - Thanks for your intro to newbies such as myself. You might note that my User page resembles yours!

I am working on a new Wiki for a mate of mine - Michael Kearns.

I have chosen to copy his existing Wiki to my personal Sandbox to add photos and edits. I will transfer it back to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Michael_S._Kearns when we are all happy it's ready to go.

My question is in regard to Copyright of photos that he has given me to put up. I am getting error/warning messages on all of them.

What's the quickest way to fix this?

I am not the best one to talk to as I do not 'do images' :) It looks like the problem you are having is that on Wikipedia we allow only free images or non-free images where a 'fair use' rationale is given for each article it is used on. Is there an image of the person that you have taken? Alternatively as this looks like it is for a politician have they released an image that is free of copyright? One of the people who have tagged the images and have left you messages on your talk page may be able to give you better advice... -- RP459 Talk/Contributions 02:54, 23 March 2010 (UTC)

Uploading pictures on Wikipedia is fun! Well, no, not really. Uploading your own pictures is not too bad. Uploading really old ones where the copyright expired is also fairly easy. Uploading ones made by the US Government or its agencies is again simple-ish. The problem is uploading images somebody else took and said "Sure, go ahead and upload it on Wikipedia".
Does the explanation at User talk:Angusmclellan#Have need your help make sense? I never got an answer from the guy who asked the question, so it might not. While you're thinking about it, best thing to do is to add {{OTRS Pending}} (two curly brackets, the words OTRS Pending and then two closing curly brackets) to the pictures. This tells people they should back off and give some time to get things sorted. If the explanation doesn't make sense, let me know and I'll try to clarify it. Agree with Angus. The messages I have left you are in regards to "missing copyright status" (i.e. you will need a license tag indicating the copyright status of the files as well as the file(s) source(s). The missing license tag issue can easily be resolved by going to WP:ICT/All (Wikipedia:Image copyright tags/Displayed and ranked should work as well) and selecting the appropriate tag. If you do not know the copyright of the files in certainty, follow Angus' instructions up above to obtain the appropriate OTRS permission for the file(s). Gargoyle

Ello there, you've put a message to delete the article for Gargoyle due to lack of charting/significant coverage. Are you sure you couldn't find anything? Bear in mind, virtually every piece of coverage on their activities/shows/releases are in Japanese, as they only tour and distribute their releases within Japan. They're very notable within the scene though, and if you need me to I can collect some (japanese) magazine coverage of their tours, as well as winning best band in one of said magazines' contests (second place was Justy Nasty, I believe). I can guarentee though that there are no significant english sources, only japanese ones. Aside from the coverage though, I don't believe they've ever actually been on major music charts, though they do frequently tour with bands who do (not that I think that counts) such as Sex Machineguns. It is just a WP:PROD tag so if you disagree with the proposed deletion feel free to remove the tag which will stop the proposed deletion... That being said I looked and could not find anything online that would allow them to pass WP:BAND, however I do not speak or read Japanese. If you were to find WP:RS I would not contest the prod removal. I understand that these sources are hard to find; how much time would you need to gather/translate them? Well, I can easily gather old interviews and magazine references (I have scans as well, if thats any help), but actual translations are out of my power until my japanese-speaking friend shows up (presently, he's in Korea). Of course, there are some captions in english, and the photos and headlines will give the basic gist of what's said in the articles until full translations can be provided. They band members (other than She-Ja) have also been on a few television dramas, though I'm not sure if it was as guest appearances or as guest stars. The shows in question are 天才てれびくん、天才てれびくんMAX（NHK教育）and 天才てれびくんシリーズのドラマ. Kiba appeared on the show(s) in 1997, 1998 and 2006 (playing different roles, if I understood correctly). The other band members appeared on the show in 1998 as well, presumably on the same episode, playing vampires. I'm unsure of the relevance of the source itself, but there's a good deal of information on recent activities on shattered-tranquility.net, which I'm aware has been used as a source here for other artists and articles. Japanese battleship Sagami

I'm quite confused, because I don't recall ever adding

to Japanese battleship Sagami -- or indeed ever even going to that article.

Speaking for whoever did, though, the obvious reason to me is that she was sunk by mines laid by a U-boat. The Uboat template includes "Capital ships sunk by U-boats".

Maybe you know that but are wondering why a ship sunk by mines is being included, and I suspect that that is because the template does not specify "torpedoed by" a U-boat; it merely says "sunk by", and "sunk by" can be easily and logically be interpreted as including mines laid by the submarine. On the other hand, one can argue that the ship was sunk by a mine, not literally by a U-boat. Anyway, the reasons for confusion are pretty obvious to me.

Ah! That solves the mystery. The reason I did it is because the Uboat template lists Russian battleship Peresviet as one of the capital ships sunk by a U-boat. So I clicked on the link at the template and added the Uboat template to the article it links to (without noticing it was Sagami). I added Uboat to the article for the sake of consistency, because all of the other capital ships listed as sunk in the Uboat template have the Uboat template in their articles, and it does not make sense that only Peresviet would not.
So the bottom line is that the article that "Russian battleship Preserviet" in the Uboat template links to is "Japanese battleship Sagami," which used to be Peresviet, which the template says a U-boat sank. So, if you disagree with adding the template to Sagami, you also will need to go in and fix the Uboat template itself, because the other capital ships listed in the template do have the Uboat template in their articles. But before you do that, you also probably should bring up the matter in some Wiki form somewhere, because all the other capital ships listed in the Uboat template have the Uboat template in their articles -- I did not put them all there, I just noticed the pattern -- and by deleting the Uboat template from Sagami you would make her article the only one about a capital ship sunk by a U-boat without the Uboat template included. A citation would clear up the validity of this information.

Frustration...

I've had another couple of removals before with the same excuse that you provided. When I asked for further clarifications, the final reply I got was "... just because others do it, that doesn't mean you can do it...". Essentially this means that if you are an experienced Wikipedia author and can play the system from within, your links can stay. If not, tough...

Every single external link that I have added is giving value to the article and I stand behind this 100%, I dare anyone to challenge it. Would this help my website? Yes it would but it would also direct people to information that is useful and closely related to the article. For crying out loud, the A380 page has two groups of links, one to flightglobal.com and one to Airbus. Do you know what the title of the flightglobal links is called??? Everything about the A380 at FlightGlobal.com. If this is not pushy promotion I don't know what is.... Why the hell hasn't someone killed the flightglobal links......????? It's a commercial site and it will benefit from the traffic. Why is it so different if I put a link in the A380 page leading to a database with professional, accurate and up to date info on orders, deliveries, list prices, used prices and even lease rates!!!??? You can get this data in a single database only if you pay a hefty subscription..... we're giving it for Free!!!

Just for once, I would like someone to provide a proper explanation why SPAM related rules were written for wikipedia when the vast majority of aviation people are ignoring them. Pls don't say that I'm exaggerating, the articles are there, it would take me just a few minutes to send you at least 10-15 improper external links.... Wikipedia is supposed to be a place where people help each other with data and information. Safeguarding selected data and information is simply saying that some pigs are more equal than others, that's not right...

I understand your frustration and I would direct you to WP:EL. Wikipedia is not perfect and neither are it's editors. External links are a very tricky issue and I hear your frustration. Links that do not belong on Wikipedia tend to slip into articles one at a time. Allot of the time they are placed there by well meaning editors who do not understand WP:EL and the policies involved. These external links tend to collect and then be removed on mass when an editor notices them. I do not however agree that established editors get preferential treatment. If I add spam links I would expect them to be removed.
I would suggest to you another option to just this site. If it passes WP:RS then why not add it as a reference to facts in an article. In my experience many external links that belong could be references in an article people just have not added them yet.
As for other articles having links in them that do not belong my advice is to have a look at Be Bold feel free to fix it, if you don't why would anyone else... -- RP459 Talk/Contributions 23:33, 11 June 2010 (UTC)

Seeking advice

Dear RP459, Thank you for getting in touch. I am still a real novice on Wikipedia and I wonder if you could advise me on two matters:

1. Over the past few years I have logged in with Wikipedia a number of times using various usernames and passwords - all of which I have promptly forgotten. Last time I made a number of tentative minor edits with "Laminateflooring" as either my username or password, but I can't remember which. Is there a way to find out, or perhaps hould all my various usernames & passwords be deleted? If so, how do I go about it?

2. When browsing random articles, I came across a short article entitled "Heartstone", which apparently is a novel by CJ Sansom. However,the article states the book is not due out until the summer of 2010. Amazon UK state they do not know if or when they will stock it. The article appears to me to be blatant advertising for a forthcoming book. Is this the sort of article that should be recommended for deletion? I've tried looking up the Wiki advice on this but find it a bit bewildering. Could you just give me a brief idiot's guide on how to do this?

Sure! Ok for number one if you do not remember both the username and password you are pretty much out of luck. If you remember the username but not the password you can request a password to be emailed from the login screen. My advice would likely be to just leave these accounts and start fresh with the one you are using now. One thing to note is WP:ILLEGIT you want to be careful not to seem as supporting discussions that were made by previous accounts that you participated in. As for number two I have WP:PROD'd the article as I completely agree with you that the article should be deleted. A good place to look for info about the deletion process is WP:BEFORE and WP:AFD. I proposed the article for deletion which means that if after 7 days no one has removed the tag (contested the deletion) an admin can delete the article. If someone does remove the tag then I would take it to articles for deletion (depinding on their rationale for keeping the article as I may have missed something), but the prod process helps cut down on the discussions at AFD... You may want to look at WP:TWINKLE it is a useful script that helps with proding and AFDing... -- RP459 Talk/Contributions 13:56, 16 June 2010 (UTC)

New Page

I'm creating a page for my US Army unit and our distinguished mascot and moniker. I wrote substantial information before saving the page. We are currently in Iraq again and, while I was away on a mission, much of what I had written was deleted, specifically the reference to the documentary we were in (Baker Boys: Inside the Surge). Upon return from our mission, I began editing our page, adding a list of operations we engaged in while deployed. All that information was also deleted. I'm confused as to why this information has been deleted, considering this platoon, and the unit we are in, is the source of the information. Moreover, the documentary, Baker Boys: Inside The Surge, is quite a viable source of information. Do you require text/literature-only sources as opposed to documentary/film and live sources? Also, to avoid deletion prior to completion of the page, is there a way to add information over time to complete the page prior to saving it all as a page? I understand your frustration I have posted some advice on your talk page. I understand that you are new but please understand that articles on Wikipedia need to pass WP:NOTABILITY. Please do not take that to mean what you and your platoon is not notable. Of course you guys are! Every soldier deserves respect and recognition but unfortunately there is a minimum threshold for encyclopedia inclusion. Where in the rules does it state this platoon does not fit the "threshold for encyclopedia inclusion?" Who is the governing factor to say this platoon is not notable? Our history stretches back from the pivotal battles of the Civil War to the valor of Audie Murphy in WWII to spearheading Operation Thunder Run into Iraq in 2002-2003. 3rd Platoon Baker Company has been featured in many movies (To Hell And Back, Patton, Baker Boys), many books, countless news and magazine articles (I, personally, was featured in Armor magazine and Soldier of Fortune magazine), received many awards and citations, and we have gained international notoriety (again) in-part to our mascot and moniker. How does that not fit the criteria? Simply because our page is a work in progress and all information necessary to satisfy your criteria has not been included yet does not warrant deletion. Your welcome, the best advice I can give you is to start slow and try to learn as many of the rules as possible. Trust me, that is a really tough task, I learn new things all the time and I have been here for 2 years. WP:VOTE and WP:CANVASS are two really good places to start for discussing changes. Stay onside with them and your halfway on your way, remember interested editors are already watching the talk pages that you are editing... Just a small, light-hearted request:

When editing articles, would it be possible to do all of your edits in one sitting, rather than editing one small section at a time, then reading the next and editing that? This stops you flooding edit notifications onto the "View history" page of an article.

Honestly probably not, when I am expanding an article substantially I do this but when I am tagging it with various tags or adding refs I typically do them one at a time. This typically does not flood a page history as I am not typically a content builder (with lots of edits to a page), except for the occasional article which I am trying to expand... Actually what is going on there is that the US spelling (I am a bad speller myself) is being used in this article per WP:SPELLING. Essentially what happens in and article (the above link explains it better) is that when and article is started using British or US spelling then it typically stays in that format resulting in what you are seeing here... Red Link Recovery

Hello. As a French-speaking WikiGnome, I'd like to solicit your help in testing a new tool. For a few years now, the Red Link Recovery Project has been using the Red Link Recovery Live tool to track down and fix unnecessarily red links in articles. Recently, the tool has been expanded to work on non-English Wikipedias. Unfair treatment to the article Dew computing

Dear senior editor: I made some modifications to an article Dew computing, and an editor reverted it to the previous version. First commented with 'spam' then with COI. After I posted my opinion about the editor's reverting in the talk page, few hours after, this editor nominated deletion of this article without point out the reasons. New deal for page patrollers

Hi RP459,

In order to better control the quality of new pages, keep out the spam, and welcome the genuine newbies, the current system we introduced in 2011 is being updated and improved. The documentation and tutorials have also been revised and given a facelift. Most importantly a new user group New Page Reviewer has been created.

Under the new rule, you may find that you are temporarily unable to mark new pages as reviewed. However, this is nothing to worry about - most current experienced patrollers are being accorded the the new right without the need to apply, and if you have significant previous experience of patrolling new pages, we strongly encourage you to apply for the new right as soon as possible - we need all the help we can get, and we are now providing a dynamic, supportive environment for your work.

User group for Military Historians

Greetings,

"Military history" is one of the most important subjects when speak of sum of all human knowledge. To support contributors interested in the area over various language Wikipedias, we intend to form a user group. It also provides a platform to share the best practices between military historians, and various military related projects on Wikipedias. An initial discussion was has been done between the coordinators and members of WikiProject Military History on English Wikipedia. Now this discussion has been taken to Meta-Wiki. Contributors intrested in the area of military history are requested to share their feedback and give suggestions at Talk:Discussion to incubate a user group for Wikipedia Military Historians.

April 2018 Milhist Backlog Drive

G'day all, please be advised that throughout April 2018 the Military history Wikiproject is running its annual backlog elimination drive. This will focus on several key areas:

  • tagging and assessing articles that fall within the project's scope
  • adding or improving listed resources on Milhist's task force pages
  • updating the open tasks template on Milhist's task force pages
  • creating articles that are listed as "requested" on the project's various lists of missing articles.

As with past Milhist drives, there are points awarded for working on articles in the targeted areas, with barnstars being awarded at the end for different levels of achievement.

The drive is open to all Wikipedians, not just members of the Military history project, although only work on articles that fall (broadly) within the scope of military history will be considered eligible. This year, the Military history project would like to extend a specific welcome to members of Wikipedia:WikiProject Women in Red, and we would like to encourage all participants to consider working on helping to improve our coverage of women in the military. This is not the sole focus of the edit-a-thon, though, and there are aspects that hopefully will appeal to pretty much everyone.

The drive starts at 00:01 UTC on 1 April and runs until 23:59 UTC on 30 April 2018. Those interested in participating can sign up here.
