Good free newspaper sources[edit]

I often see that you use newspaper sources and citations for your articles. What ones do you use? I would especially love to know if they're newspapers with free archives, as that is so incredibly hard to come by. I have had luck with The New York Times, some of the Los Angeles Times and The Houston Chronicle. What archives have you found? Have nice day! :) CarpetCrawler (talk) 00:02, 1 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I often use The Washington Post and The Boston Globe. Some of The Washington Posts articles are free, but not all of them. The Boston Globe is not free. If you need any specifics on something, I can take a look. Best. — R2 00:21, 1 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Ahhh, no, I was just generally wondering. Thanks! By the way, The Houston Chronicle and The New York Times both have free archives, so if you're looking for extra sources, I recommend that you head on over there. And I am able to access the entire Newsday archive from around I THINK 1982-on, so if you're looking for extra sources feel free to drop me a note and I'll help you out. Hace a nice day! Will do, you too. Best. — R2 13:16, 1 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Prince[edit]

Hey Realist, I was just wondering... are you a big a fan of Prince as you are of Michael Jackson? Anyway, what material do you like best of Prince's? And considering I don't think I've asked you the question about Michael Jackson as well, what is your favourite material of his? Also, because I can't find any sources outside fansites like Prince.org that use "O(+>" in place of the proper 'Love Symbol', do you think maybe you could find one? Thanks if you can answer. Ss112 (Talk here!) 06:32, 1 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

See here, I am a big fan of Prince. I own all his recent studio albums (Musicology, 3121, Planet Earth), a few of his older albums, and a 3 disk greatest hits collection. I also saw him at the O2 arena in London, it was great. My favorite Prince album would be 3121, by favorite Prince song is "Little Red Corvette".
However I like MJ more, he was a very big part of my childhood years, something Prince was not. I also love MJ's videos they are just so classy. My favorite album by him and by favorite album of all time is Dangerous. It's one of those rare albums where you can listen to every track. My favorite song is "Stranger In Moscow", I love all the singles from HIStory, but some of the later album tracks dented it's overall appeal. Still HIStory is one of my favorite albums for the singles alone. I don't listen to Off the Wall or Thriller as much as I should.
I'll look for a source for the symbol. Best. — R2 13:16, 1 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

gaga disco[edit]

just see here. Do you think the user has a valid point? --Legolas (talktome) 13:36, 1 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

When it comes to discography pages, it best to stick to 8-10 countries (the ones with the biggest music industries). Not Japan, since we don't have reliable sources for that country. Then you mention the peaks in these countries regardless of how they charted. If they didn't chart at all, you leave the box empty or use a dash. — R2 13:41, 1 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Ya, but the user is simply keeping the peaks which are good, that is not valid i guess. Also acharts is a valid info for album peaks (except for Italian albums). He's engaging in a 3RR. --Legolas (talktome) 13:49, 1 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Will take a look. — R2 14:06, 1 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

What?[edit]

What are you talking about, I didnt add any japannese chart positions. Please explain.Dt128 (talk) 13:44, 1 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

No problem. — R2 14:19, 1 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Can you check over this list when you have the time? I'll see if we can get it peer reviewed afterwards and then it can be submitted at WP:FLC. Here's a few other FL filmographies to compare it with: Woody Allen, Spike Lee and Christopher Walken. Will we need the whole "specific" and "general" business that's going on at the reference section of these filmographies? Pyrrhus16 15:32, 1 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Will take a look. — R2 15:35, 1 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Disruptive edits[edit]

Hi. Two Ips have been vandlising the Lady Gaga The Fame (album). I have talked to both, and think the article needs a block. Since you are a more est. user then me, I think you should sort it out. Thanks... and Has Anybody Seen My Disco Stick? 04:19, 2 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Tagging of the Jackson siblings[edit]

Seeing as Joseph Merrick is part of the MJ WikiProject, should all of the Jackson siblings be as well? Currently, only Janet is part of the project, along with his parents and 3T. Pyrrhus16 11:40, 3 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I would actually suggest removing Joseph Merrick from the Wikiproject. Janet was within the project because of "Scream", her minor work on Thriller and the influence MJ has had on her work. Although I see no problem adding the other family members. — R2 18:55, 3 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Great. I'm going to see if I can get a few of them to GA in the future. Pyrrhus16 19:09, 3 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]
La Toya Jackson will be interesting. — R2 19:11, 3 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]
That will be an interesting one. Pyrrhus16 19:24, 3 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Butting in, but would it make more sense to merge WP:MJJ and WP:JANET into a single WP:JACKSONS? There's more than enough crossover between the two, and none of them are particularly active at present so it's not like it will grow uncontrollably. – iridescent 19:12, 3 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I did propose merging Michael Jackson with Jackson 5 info. It got no consensus. I don't think we could ever get consensus to merge everything Jackson related, although I personally think it's a good idea. — R2 19:17, 3 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I'd support this idea, sounds great. Pyrrhus16 19:24, 3 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I might get around to starting a new debate on the issue. Currently I have all sorts of people emailing me about this latest MJ gossip. — R2 19:51, 3 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

He's really not all that shocking, if he was normal his music would be shit. Most geniuses are different. — R2 22:51, 6 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Theres defintely some truth in that. His music is good, but like I said it's probably my age, it's just when you think of MJ, theres alot there. Theres a kind of stigma against him. Still he is great dancer and singer. P.S. In the LoveGame vid right at the end, she defintely uses some of MJ's moves. Has Anybody Seen My Disco Stick? 11:20, 7 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Lady Gaga was influenced by Jackson. Probably all the artists you listened to were influenced by him. — R2 11:22, 7 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

You are correct on that one. Could you please check The Fame Ball Tour artilce, vandlism had occured there, I have also talked to Legolas. P.S. Whats you fav. MJ song? Has Anybody Seen My Disco Stick? 01:17, 8 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Stranger In Moscow, video here. You'll appreciate the song if you've come close to losing everything you cherish. I'll take a look at the vandalism. The vandalism has stopped for now, if it continues, make a request for temporary semi protection here. — R2 01:21, 8 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Gaga article[edit]

Hi, I do not see how digital spy is a "bad source", please provide an explanation when saying a broad word like "bad". The source is also used in The Fame artilce the last time I checked, that is why I put it into the main artilce. Thanks, If a reply is not sent on this or my page in one week, I will put the dance genre back unless you contest with why. I believe digital spy is very relable and complies with WP:RS. It is used throughout wikipedia,on Britneys page as well so how can you say it is not reliable.Has Anybody Seen My Disco Stick? 22:47, 6 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I was thinking[edit]

Hey Realist, I was just thinking, maybe it would be a better idea if I were to fix up No Jacket Required and nominate it for FA before I were to work on another big project, like the Living with Michael Jackson special we both were going to work on. Sometime in a few days, someone will be able to help me find references for the deadlinks, so I will be able to go back to working on the article, as well as working on the things that you had concerns about on its talkpage. After everything gets done, and I see how the article does at the FAR, I will certainly begin research on the Jackson article. Until then, I hope to be able to fix the concerns you brought up at the talkpage oh so many months ago. :) Have a nice day! CarpetCrawler (talk) 04:06, 7 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

The Special Barnstar
For somehow being able to put up with silly crap from people like me. Have a nice day! :) CarpetCrawler (talk) 04:09, 7 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Thought you deserved it for how much I must've made you go in circles lately! CarpetCrawler (talk) 04:10, 7 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Ha lol, that's fine. I think working at getting such an iconic album to FA should take priority, glad you can fix all that referencing. If you need any further advise on that article, let me know. — R2 11:04, 7 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Agreed on the album being iconic. In fact, it's my favorite of Phil's albums! :) It's also one of my favorite albums of all time. I felt bad that the original article was in such a bad state, and thought that an album of such importance needed to be covered in a better way, so there it is now. :) The worst part was finding references for the production! I feel bad for users who spend most of their time researching production of an album. Some bands and artists love talking about how they do their songs and albums, I guess some just don't... CarpetCrawler (talk) 21:28, 8 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Michael Jackson rarely speaks publicly, and he's only written one book (in 1988). When he does seek, it's rarely about the music. So writing about his music is very tricky. — R2 23:00, 8 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah, I know! And you've done such an incredible job on all of those articles, no less. I'm so thankful Phil actually had a Question and Answer forum on his message board, where he answered questions fans asked. 90% of the important material came from his posts! Speaking of Phil, I have a question about one of your concerns on the No Jacket Required talkpage (I will go through the work one section at a time :)) I hope you can find some time in your busy schedule to respond. Have a great day! CarpetCrawler (talk) 22:22, 11 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Replied, never too busy :) — R2 22:28, 11 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Photograph[edit]

Hi Realist. I know your an active music type of editor around here and I need your help on something. I'm having a problem with a user over at the Boys Like Girls page concerning a photograph. User:Ebscer keeps removing a picture that User:Qwertluis uploaded in favor of a photo of his own. Ebscer's photo of Martin Johnson (the lead singer) is not that good and is too dark. Qwertluis' photo is excellent and the quality of lighting is far better. But Ebscer keeps reverting both me and Qwertluis. I tried talking to Ebscer on his talk page but he blanked it and then he reverted my edit yet again on the band's article. I've since left him a second message but I'm not sure if he will blank that one too. Can you help? Caden S (talk) 04:29, 7 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Sure will do. — R2 11:05, 7 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

New Move[edit]

I know. — R2 01:59, 8 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Hey[edit]

Hey Realist2, how you doing? Well, I see you are very familiar with reliability of sources, and I would love to know if you can resolve my doubt: does Play.com is a good source to support album's track listings which aren't released yet? Sparks Fly 20:07, 8 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Hmm, I always feel iffy about using sources such as Amazon. That said, the track listing is not a controversial matter, and it's only a matter of time before the album is released. Therefore I think it's OK. — R2 20:26, 8 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah, when the subject is "music album" we just think in Amazon, thank you for the information.
Ah! other thing which is without any relation to these matter above: these user is deleting the tour dates of Lady Gaga's The Fame Ball Tour claiming "tour dates violate WP:NOTDIR." I don't know if this user is right, but he/she and User:WoR didn't wait a consensus and already started an edit war, and IMO: it will not end soon. What we should to do? Sparks Fly 21:16, 8 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Hmm, personally I don't think they violate NOTDIR. Your best bet in to look for some featured tour articles and see what the format is there. — R2 23:02, 8 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Use of book for citing Michael Jackson Sales figures[edit]

The biography you have used as a source for sales of Jackson's Invincible album is inappropriately credited and (by itself) is not enough to validate the claims the album sold 10 million copies. If the source is a book, the reference section needs to show: Authors name (surname first, first name last), full title, publishing house, year of publish, and ISBN number, as well as the pages. Also, as these figures are not directly from the record industry (and there is a massive difference between the figure he allegedly claims and the figure that the global certifications tally to), you will have to alter the article to say something along the lines of "According to J. Randy Tarrobelli in his book "MJ: The Magic And The Madness", it is claimed that Invincible sold XXX copies worldwide". (You should include the exact wording from the book).79.74.116.72 (talk) 23:21, 8 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

No, you are wrong. The notes section just needs the page number. If you want the details on the book, look in the reference section below it. I don't mind adding a quote within the next week (the book is a home, I'm currently in university accommodation). — R2 23:25, 8 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I'm afraid you are the one who is wrong and you need to refer to WP:CITE#HOW. Also, you have just broken the 3RR rule on the Invincible page, so you will be reported for edit warring.79.74.116.72 (talk) 23:34, 8 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]
No, if sourced it correctly. And sort a third party opinion. — R2 23:37, 8 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

They were accidents, if you make a mistake and someone reverts it, does that make a "good faith edit". For example, tha one about early life in the intro. paragraph on Gaga. Just pointing out the obvious. Has Anybody Seen My Disco Stick? 05:46, 9 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Do you know anyone that could give this a once over? :) Pyrrhus16 15:54, 10 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I'll ask around. :) Sorry, I thought you were saying something else. It's not really seen as "good" to go asking people to review FA's/FL's. It's seen as canvassing (I was accused of it once before lol). It's only acceptable to ask around for peer reviews. I will ask someone about copy editing it. We gotta get an official noticeboard ASAP[edit]

I went genre troll hunting for the first time (as opposed to people just coming to me) and I found way too many. What would be the process for setting up a noticeboard? Similar to Utan Vax's one but cleaner, prettier, in WP space, and more formal. Then the community could report persistant genre trolls. I could get someone to make some warning/note templates and maybe even an autoreporter inside TWINKLE. That would be sweet. What do you reckon? Do I have your support? You do, but I would have no idea how to start something so bold. We would have to propose it, probably at the village pump, but I'm not sure it would garner consensus. Not everyone deals with music, so they wouldn't recognize the severity of the problem. — R2 16:45, 12 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I shall muse over the quandary and get back to you, sir. ScarianCall me Pat! 17:01, 12 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks :) — R2 17:05, 12 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

We're live. So as to avoid getting told off for canvassing, could you remember to announce that I asked for your POV with this idea before I submitted it? ;-) - You don't have to comment at all but it'd be helpful! :-) ScarianCall me Pat! 17:52, 12 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Will do. Let's hope something comes of this. :) — R2 18:00, 12 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

If U Seek Amy[edit]

I have combined 2 icons of Spears in the video into one image file. I hope you would approve with this [1]. Mr Vinx (talk) 18:40, 13 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Now it will most certainly get deleted. — R2 18:45, 13 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

would like your input[edit]

I'm creating an article for Prince's F.U.N.K. Single. I've started it somewhat here User:MaJic/Sandbox2. Any input, facts, and references you can find/add to it would be GREATLY appreciated. MaJic (talk) 23:00, 13 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

PS. This adopt a user thing? Could you adopt me? :)

I'll look into it, I'm really busy though, I've been promising people too many things (I hate saying no), and I'm really up to my neck. As for adoption, I genuinely don't think you need it. You've always seemed competent and civil to me. Is there a specific area you need assistance with, I have no problems answering any general questions you have. :) — R2 23:51, 13 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

its no prob, im not in a rush lol. MaJic (talk) 03:54, 14 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Sig[edit]

Thanks – fixed… – iridescent 23:47, 13 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

No prob :) — R2 23:47, 13 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I am very lazy to do it myself. Sorry friend. Maybe you're interested to incorporate a little stuff published on this week's Chart Beat, under the subtitle "'DISCIPLINE' WHIPS BACK". --Efe (talk) 07:09, 14 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for that Efe, but I'm not sure the source is of much use really. It won't amount to a huge surge in sales. It's a shame they didn't give an update on the sales figures. — R2 09:18, 14 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Ah, OK. Why not ask them? --Efe (talk) 10:17, 14 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I could do, do you think they would print a response, like on Ask Billboard? — R2 10:19, 14 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]
They haven't published their chart beat chat until today, I think. Perhaps you can ask them. --Efe (talk) 10:37, 14 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Might give it a go. :) — R2 10:39, 14 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

If U Seek Amy undos[edit]

This isn't an official reprimand or anything, but I since you seem to have your eye on an admin bit someday (and most of your edits have been good and sensible), I want to warn you about being careful about edit warring; the WP:3RR is that you won't make more than three reverts *period* to an article in the 24 hour period. If you find that you are being called upon to revert more than that, and the edits are valid, flag down an administrator and have them take a look at your edits and keep an eye out. Between midday on the 11th and midnight on the 13th, about 36 hours, you did 12 undos of the article, and one edit labeled 'revert'. I wouldn't have noticed it, except that you were repeatedly changing Vinx' edits. The edits, while for the most part supportable, are still a violation of 3RR, and in the case of the picture, don't actually fall in the exceptions.

You seem a good editor, so I just wanted to make you aware, since I don't think you realized how often you are using that tool. The article is high visibility, but not a vital life-and-death missive, and you don't need to get a 3RR call on it. --Thespian (talk) 08:02, 14 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]
