Avoid using amazon.com as a source[edit]

Hi, I have removed a number of references using amazon.com as a source, which you had added to articles about books. The only reason to include a link to amazon or other book sellers in the references would be if there was no other way to verify the basic information about it, and in those cases it would never be appropriate to have more than one link, i.e. not one for each separate printing. Since the information is verifiable anyway, the amazon.com links add no information, and should be avoided. Note also that if Amazon sells a book through different local marketplaces, that does not mean that the book has been published in those locations. Rajesh Khanna: The Untold Story of India's First Superstar has not been published in Singapore and Sweden – if you follow the amazon.sg and amazon.se links that were previously in the article, you'll see that it is the same edition, published by Penguin India. Regards, --bonadea contributions talk 14:01, 27 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]

April 2021[edit]

Information icon Please do not add inappropriate external links to Wikipedia, as you did to Rajesh Khanna: The Untold Story of India's First Superstar. Wikipedia is not a collection of links, nor should it be used for advertising or promotion. Inappropriate links include, but are not limited to, links to personal websites, links to websites with which you are affiliated (whether as a link in article text, or a citation in an article), and links that attract visitors to a website or promote a product. See the external links guideline and spam guideline for further explanations. Because Wikipedia uses the nofollow attribute value, its external links are disregarded by most search engines. If you feel the link should be added to the page, please discuss it on the associated talk page rather than re-adding it. Thank you. bonadea contributions talk 17:17, 27 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Warning icon Please stop your disruptive editing. If you continue to add inappropriate external links to Wikipedia, you may be blocked from editing. It is considered spamming and Wikipedia is not a vehicle for advertising or promotion. Because Wikipedia uses nofollow tags, additions of links to Wikipedia will not alter search engine rankings. bonadea contributions talk 06:49, 28 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Linking (from every edition!) to amazon.com makes it appear as if Wikipedia was trying to get people to buy the book. That is obviously not your intention, but consider how a reader might click on a reference link to get more information, and instead is taken to a website selling it! Commercial websites should only be used when the information cannot be verified in any other way (see WP:AFFILIATE), and all relevant info is in fact verified without any links to Amazon. In Sanjay Dutt: The Crazy Untold Story of Bollywood's Bad Boy you also restored promotionally written text about a different book, and an Amazon link to that, which is absolutely not appropriate. --bonadea contributions talk 06:55, 28 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@Bonadea: What? Are you kidding me right now? Read this sentence carefully: "Sanjay Dutt: The Crazy Untold Story of Bollywood's Bad Boy was published on 13 March 2018 in a hardcover format by Juggernaut Books, marking Usman's second collaboration with the publishing company following Rekha: The Untold Story in 2016." Please sir, you irritate me by stubbornness. What is the reason you want to remove that part from the article? Yes, it is the other book (but note this! The book was written by the same author and published by the same company). Do you understand? This is acceptable on Wikipedia and by the user who reviewed my article as well. --Nicholas Michael Halim (talk) 07:07, 28 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Bonadea: I have given you two article on biographical books about Madonna on your talk page, please check it! --Nicholas Michael Halim (talk) 07:09, 28 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Bonadea: I am not promoting the book, I just took information from the website! OK! Please remember and understand that! There is no other sources about the book's release dates, except Amazon. What do you want, citing a blogspot or a wordpress? --Nicholas Michael Halim (talk) 07:12, 28 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]
You have provided the ISBN, and that is sufficient for the bibliographical information. Again, please read WP:AFFILIATE for information of where commercial links may be appropriate. The text "marking Usman's second collaboration with the publishing company following Rekha: The Untold Story in 2016" is in fact irrelevant – it tells us nothing about the article topic, and including a commercial link to that other book does not help Wikipedia's readers at all.

Nobody can keep track of all Wikipedia's policies and guidelines, and you are clearly acting in good faith here, even if you are making mildly uncivil comments above. But you do have to be receptive to feedback from other editors, and not just edit war your versions back. Instead of requesting help from one specific editor (who has done some proxy editing for you, I see), I recommend that you go to the reliable sources noticeboard and ask there about the use of multiple amazon.com links in the various book articles you have created. Regards, --bonadea contributions talk 09:22, 28 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]
An additional point about WP:RSPS: yes, it does say (as does WP:AFFILIATE that amazon.com can be used as a reference when information cannot be verified otherwise. The exact quote is "it is unnecessary to cite Amazon when the work itself may serve as a source for that information (e.g., authors' names and ISBNs)". If your point is that the release dates for each edition is important information, again, WP:RSN is the place to go. Also keep in mind that a GA review does not lead to a perfect article – as you know, one of the GA reviews on your book articles missed at least one point of misleading text. That is not a big deal, it happens; the point is that an article that has gone through a GA review can always be improved further. --bonadea contributions talk 09:38, 28 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Bonadea, this is exactly the kind of help I told you we should give to this wonderful new editor. I actually started a WP:RSN discussion. As for your first paragraph, I do not totally agree with you. It is common practice mentioning an author's previous works, although the use of the book as a source is indeed wrong. I'll try to help finding better sources. ShahidTalk2me 09:36, 28 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]
"New editor" can mean different things to different people – for me, an editor with almost 7,000 edits to English Wikipedia over more than two years is sufficiently experienced that you can expect them to be familiar with the concept of reliable sources and inappropriate commercial links. --bonadea contributions talk 09:49, 28 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Bonadea: I am not actively editing on Wikipedia before 2020 actually, just wanted you to know, and before rewrote the Wikipedia article Kajol, starting in November 2020, I only added references. --Nicholas Michael Halim (talk) 09:52, 28 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Bonadea: OK sir, but, if you disagree with my opinion on those articles why do not you just discuss it on my talk page or on the articles'. Honestly, your acting is really and really shocking for me. And you called me did a "good faith" here, are you serious? I just wanted to compare the articles with the others, as both articles I mentioned on your talk page were my examples to expand my future biographical book articles. Huh, it is up to you and I have brought this problem to the reliable sources noticeboard as what you said before. Oh... it is interesting, you have been an editor before the 2010s so you must have more experiences than me, right? So you must understand why I used Amazon as a source, didn't you? --Nicholas Michael Halim (talk) 09:38, 28 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]
I have discussed it, repeatedly. I am sorry if my posts above were difficult to understand; I'm afraid I, in my turn, really don't understand what you mean when you say And you called me did a "good faith" here, are you serious?. What I said was you are clearly acting in good faith here. That means that I understand that you (just like me and Shshshshsh and Meters) are making edits that you think will improve Wikipedia. Yes, I understand why you used that source (in good faith), but that does not mean that the source is in fact acceptable. --bonadea contributions talk 09:49, 28 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]
My username is Shshshsh, not Shshshshsh.
I think Nicholas meant you had assumed bad faith on him.
I don't have an opinion about the sources, we'll see what the RSN thread yields. ShahidTalk2me 09:56, 28 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]
I apologise for misspelling your user name. I was being unacceptably careless there, and I'll make sure it doesn't happen again. --bonadea contributions talk 10:01, 28 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Bonadea, no need to apologise, I just corrected you. ShahidTalk2me 10:07, 28 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Bonadea: Huh... a discussion has started on the reliable sources noticeboard anyway, don't forget to write your opinion there. --Nicholas Michael Halim (talk) 10:03, 28 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]
