Hi, I would like clarification concerning your AWB editing of the football (soccer) entries from, for example, {{fc|Example Team}} to [[Example Team F.C.|Example Team]]. According to the Wikipedia:WikiProject Football/Templates the {{fc}} option is the correct one. → friedfish 16:55, 30 October 2006 (UTC)

Templates such as {{fc}} and {{afc}} are not intended to be left inline, they should be substituted. I've left a note explaining usage at the page you mentioned. Robwingfield (talk) 17:02, 30 October 2006 (UTC)

Thomas Burns

Hi - I've changed the Thomas Burns (vicar) redlink to Thomas Burns (New Zealand). Firstly it's inaccurate to call him a vicar (he was a rector), and secondly it doesn't really indicate what he's best remembered for - a bit like saying "Condoleezza Rice (pianist)" or "Terry Venables (scriptwriter)". Bulmershe School

You have just reverted the Bulmershe School article and removed all my edits including lots of helpful external links. The article as it now stands does not make any sense. It implies that the school is still a grammar school. There is no point whatsoever in including the breakdown of the ethnicity of the pupils. The page just looks a mess without the proper citations. Changes need to be discussed on the talk page. I will revert to my previous edit. I was trying to improve the article. As it stands it could well be a candidate for deletion again. Dahliarose

I've kept your edits to the external links, but readded the other content with full citations. The Kingfisher Table Tennis Club is irrelevant, and should have its own article if notable. The article could well be a future candidate for deletion, but as it was proven notable before (and now has full citations to prove), the nomination would fail. "American soccer player"/"American footballer"

Just wondering if this change is standard policy now or something. I'm supportive of the change (NFL players are never called "footballers" so it's unambiguous and less awkward, in my eyes), but I have no idea whether I should begin applying it across the board, or what. Gary Roberts

I noticed you removed my move of Gary Roberts from Gary Roberts (ice hockey player) to Gary Roberts (hockey). Having looked at the article again, he definitely plays ice hockey, not hockey, so surely my move was correct...? robwingfield «T•C» 11:09, 21 December 2006 (UTC)

  • Thanks for discussing, but no. To paraphrase Lenin, the purpose of dab'n is to dab'ate. And it should do that as tersely as possible. If "hockey" is sufficient to distinguish a contender for the title "Gary Roberts" from all the others, it is a successful dab'g sufx, and any elaboration on it would pervert the Dab'n mechanism, from its purpose as a navigational device, into some kind of substitute for the text of the article. The titles of books are primarily for marketing (George Washington: Hero of Independence) which can justify including some storytelling in them, but those of 'pedia articles are solely for identification. I'm not even looking at ice hockey and hockey, bcz i'm a native speaker of modern English, and i don't need a dictionary (let alone an encyclopedia, which is a poor substitute as a source of information on the usage of words) to tell me what matters here: saying "ice hockey" (since there are no air-, field-, or knock-hockey equipment, games, players, or teams around to be confused with the matter at hand) would provide no benefit, and would have a (small) direct cost and a large indirect one (contributing to the impression that terseness in dab sfxes is unnecessary or even undesirable).
(BTW, the dates in the other Gary Roberts titles are even worse, and having invested this much (away from my normal LoPbN-tree concerns) will probably get me to fix them as well, tho the correct approach is not in that case so immediately apparent: it will require reading the bios involved.)
Disambiguation work is necessary, and not a lot of fun. I appreciate your taking part in it!

Okay, good points well made...! As far as the footballer articles are concerned, I used the year of birth as that seems to be an approach that's used in the same scenario for other footballers with the same name. Both players are English, so nationality can't be used, which is the other common attribute used to disambiguate players of the same sport of the same name... happy to hear any alternative suggestions you have, though! robwingfield «T•C» 19:48, 21 December 2006 (UTC)
You are far from the first to resort to it, and i admit it's better than nothing. Are you a fan? Bcz a fan is likely to do a better job, other things being equal. Yeah re nat'ty; i'm used to being a bug abt, as far as LoPbN descriptions are concerned, nationality meaning passport, and all those people having British passports, but i think used English vs. Scottish as dab'g sfx's abt a wk ago. (And i once resorted to "(lefty)" and "(righty)" for two American pitchers!) I think the most cogent objection to dates is that (even tho they are good, compared to say team name, in not being subject to change) is that (especially when the careers overlap) they don't tell most users at a glance which one you want -- they may be no more helpful than middle name, hometown, or randomly assiging "(psi)" and "(upsilon)". And (full disclosure) in my personal case from hell, the boxers Davey Moore, i gave up and used dates (fl. dates, rather than birth); you'll see why, i think.
In this GR case, my first glance left me considering somehow using prominence (as i once did with a major and a minor leaguer, IIRC), but i'm at the very beginning of thinking abt it. Your ideas welcome, fan or no.

  • Here's what i see:
    '84: plays Left Wing; playing regularly since 2005; offered big money (big for pro soccer? dunno);
    '87: plays Defensive Midfielder; playing regularly since 2004 or 2005 (depending on which part of his article you consult)
    Very hard to find clear handles for them, at least with my poor knowledge of the sport's culture. At this point, unless you have more ideas, my suggestion is to leave it to fans, perhaps by just copying this discussion to the Dab's talk page & lk'g it from the two articles' talk pages.

Emre Belözoğlu

While someone might be generally known by their first name in this country (many pop stars are, for example), as an encyclopædia we don't follow suit (it has a fanzine feel about it). His name is Emre Belözoğlu.

The en-rule, not the hyphen, is used to separate ranges of figures and dates.

You removed the reference to his agent rejecting the charge.

No problem... I quite often do it for my own benefit as much as anyone else, as they're helpful place-holders for future edits... I can then go back and find sources or remove the statements at a later date. Regarding formatting of citations, I prefer to have them in-line rather than split them out, because it really bloats out a page when you're coming back to edit it later.   • There are currently five article being peer reviewed by the peer review team. Please stop by and see if there is any way that you could contribute to those articles.
  • It has been proposed by John Carter that the various other projects which relate to Christianity ought to all at least tag those articles which fall within their scope. That way, this project would have a better idea which articles do not fall within the specific scope of any of the other related projects. Articles can be "tagged" by placing {{ChristianityWikiProject}} in the articles talk page.

Hi, sorry, your message got hidden by a subsequent one. Have a look at Template_talk:Infobox_Football_biography#Height_template. There is no consensus for using this template in infoboxes. My view is that it should be used as an aid to conversion of units, but as that conversion will not change, the template should not stay inline and should be subst'd. At the moment, subst'ing {{height}} makes things look clunky so I'm compromising by not removing it unless another edit has to be made, but there needs to be consensus to add the use of the template, not remove it. robwingfield «T•C» 09:21, 15 June 2007 (UTC)

Oops!

I just noticed your comment on another user's talk page. I never knew that the standard for (loan) in the infobox was without the italics. The italics seemed so common that I never bothered to check the footy style manual. I will remove the italics wherever I see them from now on. Incidentally, do you know if there is a set of standards for the manager succession boxes that go at the foot of articles? There seem to be a few inconsistencies in them. For example, some display the F.C. suffix, some don't. Some have 'manager', some have 'Manager'. Some link to the club article, some link to the 'Managers' section of the club article, still others to the 'List of (club) Managers' article. footballer

Why do you think these articles should be merged. Footballer, although in a poor state, talks about all types of football. If anything it should be merged with Football not Football (soccer). When you add merger tags it would be helpful to explain your reasoning on the talk page of the article concerned. Template help request

Hello. I notice you've helped out with Template:Fc. I was wondering if you could tell me what I've done wrong with Template:Nct, which I've attempted to from adapt from the football club template to work for national cricket teams.

Currently when I use it creates a quote esque area of formatting (see the Qualifying section of this version of ICC World Twenty20.

Hi, it seems to work fine for me. Check out User:Robwingfield/sandbox, where I've used the template both (1) transcluded and (2) substituted. What I have done is remove the underscores from your template... but purely for aesthetic reasons! You have deleted an speedy-delete tagged article, tagged as A7. The author of the article asks you, why you deleted it. For example, this one I have just deleted: Cherisse Osei (born Cherrise Amma Loren Ofosu-Osei, 23rd December 1986 ) first came to fame as the drummer in the English pop band The Faders. After the announcement of the groups split in July 2006, via their Myspace page, Osei initally joined the band Calaisa , before becoming the current drummer for the singer Mika. Notability of footballers

To answer your question on this AfD, the discussion took place on the main WP:FOOTY page here in November after fizzling out it was restarted here in February. It was clear that criteria 1,2,3 & 7 were supported by the vast majority and moved to the WP:FOOTY/Notability page, which had remained blank for over 2 years. Criteria 4 was more contoversial, we agreed to move onto other topics with an understanding that we would reconsider Youth footballers at a later date (definately before the World Youth Cup in 2009). Unfortunately after the two lengthy and considered debates, the new criteria were immediately set upon and undermined by editors from WP:BIO, in my opinion a victory for maintaining the status-quo over reasoned debate and consensus between members of a specific project. The undermining of these criteria have dealt a huge blow to my faith in the Wikipedia project and led to my virtual withdrawal from WP:FOOTY and severaly damaged the chances of the Wikiproject moving on to define clear, unambiguous notability criteria for other parts of the game, (clubs, leagues, stadiums, managers, referees etc). It frustrates me that we spent so long discussing the new criteria in order to end "notability by precident" and resolve the "Anderlecht issue" you raised in this AfD yet all of that discussion and consensus building can be overruled by one sentence from WP:ATHLETE. Oh well, never mind, perhaps I should stick to creating articles & categories rather than consensus building. English peasant 19:58, 26 February 2008 (UTC)

Please check some of these articles that you are {{prod}}ding. At least three of them - Patrick Nyarko (edit | talk | history | protect | delete | links | watch | logs | views), Josh Lambo (edit | talk | history | protect | delete | links | watch | logs | views), and Sean Franklin (edit | talk | history | protect | delete | links | watch | logs | views) - have already survived an AFD. (I didn't look at the others.) A prod is considered to be out of order for an article that has been AFD'd. If you do have a desire to re-AFD any of them, please do them separately. The big problem with Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Roger Espinoza is that it was considering a number of different players with varying degrees of notability. Patrick Nyarko, for example, has been the subject of multiple articles by multiple media outlets, even before being drafted. Some of the others got just a blurb or two when they were drafted. Having a joint AFD really makes it difficult to have a good discussion/evaluation of each article and the reliable sources available. --B (talk) 18:58, 7 March 2008 (UTC)

Yately Rd

I understand that you deleted my article on Yately Rd because because it provided little or no context to the reader. The Rd had been referenced from Herbert Tudor Buckland who was a famous architect of the Arts and Crafts movement. He is also credited with building the Elan Village at Elan Valley in Wales. Yately Rd contains the home he designed for himself and also others in the road. These are listed buildings, his own being Grade one listed. Can you reinstate Yately Rd as an article please. I have reverted your change to the infobox - as far as I can see, the consensus is to include the player's full name, even where this is the same as the article name. Can you show support for your statement: "no further names known, so no need for fullname"?

Hi - thanks for the responses. Although you imply that you think it is "obvious" that the full name should not be included if it's the same as the article title, you have not produced any support for your point of view. The section is headed "Personal information" - surely someone's full name is an important part of that information.
In cases where I am in disagreement with another, long-term and respected editor, I usually refer to Featured Articles to see how they have treated the matter in dispute. The list at [3] includes two articles where the player has no middle or other names – Duncan Edwards and John Wark. St James' Park

I disagree with your recent move of St James' Park to sportsdirect.com @ St James' Park Stadium. Such a move really shouldn't have been performed without discussion first, especially as WP:COMMONNAME states to use the most easily recognised name. Invite to the African Destubathon

Hi. You may be interested in participating in the African Destubathon which starts on October 15. Africa currently has over 37,000 stubs and badly needs a quality improvement editathon/contest to flesh out basic stubs. There are proposed substantial prizes to give to editors who do the most articles, and planned smaller prizes for doing to most destubs for each of the 53 African countries, so should be enjoyable! So it would be a good chance to win something for improving stubs on African sportspeople, including footballers, athletes, Olympians and Paralympians etc, particularly female ones, but also male. Even if contests aren't your thing we would be grateful if you could consider destubbing a few African articles during the drive to help the cause and help reduce the massive 37,000 + stub count, of which many are rated high importance (think Regions of countries etc). If you're interested in competing or just loosely contributing a few expanded articles on African Paralympians, Olympians and committees etc, please add your name to the Contestants/participants section.
