Disambiguation link notification for January 7

Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. An automated process has detected that when you recently edited Steve Omohundro, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Mark O'Connell (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). Such links are usually incorrect, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of unrelated topics with similar titles. (Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.)

Thank you

Hey, thank you for contacting me about the closing of the merge discussion.

By the way, I've been itching to ask somebody familiar with these subjects what they think about the TS and its implications. Kurzweil estimates it'll be here in 2029, which isn't that far off.

I've been looking for ways to watch the coming of the TS...

TOP500#New developments in supercomputing indicates that a new generation of supercomputers will be coming online later this year, with several times more capacity than the current generation, which already have surpassed the calculation and storage capacities of a human brain by several times.

Here's a link that shows the planet getting wired up like a computer (with submarine Internet cables): https://qz.com/657898/this-map-shows-the-explosive-growth-of-underwater-cables-the-power-the-global-internet/ (press "play").

If you know of any other revealing resources, please share.

As for the question I mentioned...

What do you feel about the coming TS?

Regarding Lubos Motl as former theoretical physicist

Good morning Mr Nelson. I this page I would like to talk about the fact that on several occasions, I have described Lubis as former theoretical physicist, and this was removed for being an unsourced information. Ironically, all the replacements fail to provide any source as well. I have extensively discussed this in the talk page of Lubos, so I would like to repeat some of the justifications I explained already, in case you did not have the occasion to read them:

To be considered as active physicist, one needs two conditions: belong to an accredited institution, and publish. The typical publishing requirement (the so called "silent rule") is 2 major papers /5 years, or a more minor papers over the same period. If one fail the publication requirement, one can still be considered as academic but usually it puts your career under an unwanted spotlight. In the case of L.M. , he is ***not*** an active researcher anymore. I could understand that a non-scientist might still want to consider L.M as "theoretical physicist", fine then, but I ought to stress that such views are really damaging for the current active scientists. However, what I find not accurate, is that you invalidate the characterization of him as "former academic", because this is true, unless you are able to provide a source stating otherwise. Misleading the public is extremely damaging in science because the public of today are the taxpayers of tomorrow that will fund the research that helps us progress. So when you get a public that can't make a difference between Michael Green, Brian Greene and Lubos Motl , things get embarrassing (FYI, Michael Green is one of the creators of string Theory). Not all defenses of string theory are of same values, and you obviously can't equal the standing of a FRS and Lucasian Prof of Mathematics vs a misogynistic blogger fired from his job and whose scientific quality of even his blog is just getting poorer, because the longer he stays out of the field, the more he forgets, the more basic mistakes he makes. So, unlike that the user DRmies, said, I don't have an agenda, but as scientist who apply for funding to finance my research, like all my colleagues, it's part of our responsibility that those listened to are those recognized in the field, not those that an "editor" have randomly decided. And indeed I say random because I don't see any logic in your decision to remove my change because of being unsourced, while the statement "Czech theoretical physicist" (Implying "current" since "former" is removed) is not sourced either.

Thank you for your attention. For the sake of honesty, I would like to let you know that I would like to share the content of this discussion with my colleagues. Please let me know if you object to this. Thank you. — Preceding unsigned comment added by AlphaMathematician (talkcontribs) 08:43, 7 May 2018 (UTC)

Wikipedia doesn't claim that Motl is a current academic. He is identified by the BBC and others as a physicist. It may well be the BBC takes the position that not all physicists are publishing academics; one obvious counterexample would be government physicists working for classified military projects (although I doubt Motl is in that category). Feel free to share with whom you want. If you publish in a WP:RS or convince an RS to state that Motl is self-employed or otherwise has no current academic position, then we can obviously include it at that point. Or, if he states somewhere on his blog that he has no position, we can probably include it as a routine biographical detail. Rolf H Nelson (talk) 05:01, 11 May 2018 (UTC)

About deleting original research references in Explainable_Artificial_Intelligence article.

Dear Mr Nelson, thank you for your attention to my posting to https://www.wikipedia.org/wiki/Explainable_Artificial_Intelligence article.

"Hello, Konstantin.M.Golubev, and welcome to Wikipedia! Thank you for your contributions. I hope you like the place and decide to stay. Unfortunately, one or more of your recent edits have not conformed to Wikipedia's verifiability policy, and has been removed. Wikipedia articles should refer only to facts and interpretations that have been stated in print or on reputable websites or in other media. Always remember to provide a reliable source for quotations and for any material that is likely to be challenged, or it may be removed. Wikipedia also has a related policy against including original research in articles."

As far as I understood your policy you allow to mention only mainstream research provided by known institutions with sufficient funding. It is obvious that science is a business at first for them to get funds for their survival. And they simply resist to consider alternative views fearing to lose finances.

Explainable AI as stated in article was not properly developed by Stanford, Yale, Berkeley, Oxford, IBM, Google and so on in a last 50 years, because their ideas appeared as fruitless. And any attempt to suggest alternative research on this, even published by Inderscience (Golubev, K. M. (2003). Adaptive learning with e-knowledge systems. International Journal for Technology Management. Vol. 25, Nos.6/7, Inderscience Enterprises Limited, UK.) and Springer (Golubev, K. M. (2014). “Overview of AI Research History in USSR and Ukraine: Up-to-Date Just-In-Time Knowledge Concept” in Artificial Intelligence for Knowledge Management (pp. 1-18). Eunika Mercier-Laurent, Danielle Boulanger, Eds. http://link.springer.com/book/10.1007/978-3-642-54897-0) are not allowed to be mentioned, because they should be approved by failed institutions.

It looks like Galileo, Copernicus and Kepler study example, would Wikipedia avoid mentioning their ideas for some centuries, just as precaution?

"“In astronomy, the geocentric model (also known as geocentrism, or the Ptolemaic system) is a superseded description of the universe with Earth at the center… The astronomical predictions of Ptolemy's geocentric model were used to prepare astrological and astronomical charts for over 1500 years. The geocentric model held sway into the early modern age, but from the late 16th century onward, it was gradually superseded by the Heliocentric model of Copernicus, Galileo and Kepler. There was much resistance to the transition between these two theories. Christian theologians were reluctant to reject a theory that agreed with Bible passages... Others felt a new, unknown theory could not subvert an accepted consensus for geocentrism.” https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Geocentric_model"

There's probably no need to delete the account; Wikipedia likes to keep them old accounts around to archive the history. Instead just add a note to the talk page marking it as defunct after such-and-such date and avoid using it. Rolf H Nelson (talk) 17:12, 5 August 2018 (UTC)

Feel free to bring up on the talk page for the Physarum polycephalum entry if you want other opinions; in my opinion it's better than citing sciencedaily, but a primary source that's too new to assess a citation count, and in that's in a "rapid publication" journal, is still not sufficient for inclusion. On Effective altruism, you correctly noted that the source I gave for "many" EAs believing reducing suffering should be a major priority was insufficient; it showed only that a large majority was veg*n or trying to reduce meat intake, not that that they believed it was a major priority. Navalny

First, TV Rain is being as source in many articles on Wikipedia and was never questioned as WP:RS, and there's no reason for that as it was never involved in fakes. The same was reported by other media[7]. Navalny published a lengthy open letter to Yandex[8] and Yandex published a lenghty response to this with apologies[9] so I don't think there's any doubt about reliability of the initial TV Rain reporting here. Artificial Intelligence - Regulation Review

There was no plans or strategy prior at all to 2016. First strategy was released in 2017 by CIFAR, Canada. Prior to that in 2016, there were on some strategic plans by national authorities (China and US for instance). The first regional statement of any kind was by the EU in April 2017, although this is hardly a 'plan', let a lone a 'strategy'. First regional plan was by the Nordic-Baltic region in May 2017. Hence, there was no regional plans before 2016. Countless sources confirm this.

As to "assessing how serious the plans are", I do not believe it is the function or role of Wikipedia as an encyclopedia to assess the seriousness of any of these plans. Wikipedia should contain objective information. All plans have been formally adopted by national authorities, this should be a sufficient statement of the "seriousness" of the plans.

I would also very much disagree with the number 30 being "weakly sourced":

- https://oecd-opsi.org/projects/ai/strategies/ - Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development

- https://futureoflife.org/national-international-ai-strategies/?cn-reloaded=1 - non-profit research institute associated with Elon Musk, Jaan Tallin, Max Tegmark, Nick Bostrom, etc.

- http://www.unicri.it/in_focus/files/Report_AI-An_Overview_of_State_Initiatives_FutureGrasp_7-23-19.pdf - United Nations

Agree on the MOS:TEXTASIMAGES concern and image may be inadmissable. To avoid concern it should be removed.

I would suggest revision of your comment and reinstating the proposed edit.

Your comment:

Source doesn't appear to claim that no regional authorities ever had implemented plans before 2016. "More than 30" is an weakly-sourced factoid without assessing how serious the plans are. Image may be admissible, but you'll need to open a section on talk page first to address MOS:TEXTASIMAGES concern.

Good points, feel free to bring them up on the Talk:Artificial intelligence page in case other people want to give opinions. Rolf H Nelson (talk) 04:52, 8 May 2020 (UTC)

Russian-US relations

You blanked the entire page (except table of contents) with your edit. I was restoring the page. The article had several sources posted, so I don't understand what your issue even is. If you have issues with parts of the article, take it up with said parts. Don't blank the entire page.StrangeApparition2011 (talk) 04:01, 30 June 2020 (UTC)

You're right, I accidentally delete the table's closing curly brace and it did indeed end up hiding the rest of the article text, when I just meant to blank the unsourced table. Thanks! Rolf H Nelson (talk) 04:18, 30 June 2020 (UTC)

Your edit on Filter Bubble>Platform studies

You deleted a reference to a PLoS ONE article on the basis that "Source does only non-traditional partial peer review". PLoS ONE is an renowned international peer-reviewed scientific journal with an Impact Factor of 2.74 as of 2019. Could you elaborate on your criticism towards this particular source ? Meanwhile I canceled your deletion. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Ant1mazr (talkcontribs) 09:59, 28 August 2020 (UTC)

The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.

I've noticed that you've removed my edits to the Artificial General Intelligence page without community discussion. These edits are based on peer reviewed work. I would encourage you to consider that Wikipedia is not a resource for personal opinions but instead a resource for sharing credible information. Functional modeling approaches to understanding cognition have been well established in the literature for a considerable time. If you have issues with such approaches please state them in detail rather than vandalizing the Wikipedia page. Please ensure that before making such changes you seek feedback from the community to ensure that your edits reflect the best interests of that community.CognitiveMMA (talk) 03:55, 18 February 2021 (UTC)

Your Removal of Edits on Functional Modeling Based Approaches

I'm not going to undelete the addition I made which you have deleted multiple times by now. After your first delete I requested you seek community input before doing so. After your last delete you asked that I seek community feedback before adding anything. Rather than create an unnecessary burden of work for others such as myself who post information on approaches you aren't familiar with by asking that they seek additional consensus on material that has already been peer reviewed, perhaps you can provide some concrete feedback on how to improve the article, so that an "edit war" or a "conflict resolution" process can be avoided. Bear in mind that Functional modeling of cognition is an area that has been researched for decades, though the application of such techniques to AGI might be new. Further, please bear in mind that this approach potentially adds capabilities that no other approach might offer. Not only might it be true that omitting this peer-reviewed material is unwarranted, but it omitting it is also leaving out what at least some people believe to be the single most promising and important direction of research in AGI, and what they believe is the only direction of research with the capacity to achieve strong AI. Whether they are wrong or right is a subjective opinion. But subjective opinions should not govern whether objectively novel and verifiably peer-reviewd material is excluded from Wikipedia articles. Information icon Hello, I'm EGL1234. I noticed that you recently removed content from Computational creativity without adequately explaining why. In the future, it would be helpful to others if you described your changes to Wikipedia with an accurate edit summary. If this was a mistake, don't worry; the removed content has been restored. If you would like to experiment, please use your sandbox. If you think I made a mistake, or if you have any questions, you can leave me a message on my talk page. Discretionary sanctions alert

This is a standard message to notify contributors about an administrative ruling in effect. It does not imply that there are any issues with your contributions to date.

You have shown interest in articles about living or recently deceased people, and edits relating to the subject (living or recently deceased) of such biographical articles. Due to past disruption in this topic area, a more stringent set of rules called discretionary sanctions is in effect. Any administrator may impose sanctions on editors who do not strictly follow Wikipedia's policies, or the page-specific restrictions, when making edits related to the topic.

For additional information, please see the guidance on discretionary sanctions and the Arbitration Committee's decision here. If you have any questions, or any doubts regarding what edits are appropriate, you are welcome to discuss them with me or any other editor.

Earth's orbit shrinking?

Please see WP:RD/Science#Earth's orbit shrinking?. I'm trying hard to pass the buck on this one, but I'll take a stab at it tonight is no one else does. -- ToE 12:42, 1 April 2021 (UTC)

No one else took the buck, so I fixed the sentence in the article and asked for some subject matter expert help on the talk page. -- ToE 13:35, 2 April 2021 (UTC)
