Ways to improve Rabindra Jayanti[edit]

Hi, I'm Crystallizedcarbon. SWASTIK 25, thanks for creating Rabindra Jayanti!

I've just tagged the page, using our page curation tools, as having some issues to fix. Please add references from reliable sources to the article to meet our verifiability and notablility requirements.

The tags can be removed by you or another editor once the issues they mention are addressed. If you have questions, you can leave a comment on my talk page. Or, for more editing help, talk to the volunteers at the Teahouse. Crystallizedcarbon (talk) 18:52, 20 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]

  2. Do take the time to read the Q&A if you have any questions, or ask on the talk page.
  3. The list of participants has been alphabetized so you can more easily find your name and report your contributions.
  4. There is a template that you can use on your user page. {{Template:User Asian Month‎}}

Disambiguation link notification for November 4[edit]

Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. Wikipedia appreciates your help. We noticed though that when you edited Bengali Brahmins, you added links pointing to the disambiguation pages English and Bengali. Such links are almost always unintended, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of "Did you mean..." article titles. Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.

It's OK to remove this message. Also, to stop receiving these messages, follow these opt-out instructions. Thanks, DPL bot (talk) 10:26, 4 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

If this is the first article that you have created, you may want to read the guide to writing your first article.

You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.

Hello, I noticed that you recently created a new page, List of international cricket centuries by Kane Williamson. First, thank you for your contribution; Wikipedia relies solely on the efforts of volunteers such as you. Unfortunately, the page you created covers a topic on which we already have a page – Kane Williamson. Because of the duplication, your article has been tagged for speedy deletion. Please note that this is not a comment on you personally and we hope you will continue helping to improve Wikipedia. If the topic of the article you created is one that interests you, then perhaps you would like to help out at Kane Williamson – you might like to discuss new information at the article's talk page.

If you think the article you created should remain separate, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be removed without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. If the page is deleted, and you wish to retrieve the deleted material for future reference or improvement, then please contact the deleting administrator, or if you have already done so, you can place a request here. Additionally if you would like to have someone review articles you create before they go live so they are not nominated for deletion shortly after you post them, allow me to suggest the article creation process and using our search feature to find related information we already have in the encyclopedia. Try not to be discouraged. Wikipedia looks forward to your future contributions. —SpacemanSpiff 04:59, 14 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Hi,
You appear to be eligible to vote in the current Arbitration Committee election. The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to enact binding solutions for disputes between editors, primarily related to serious behavioural issues that the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the ability to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail. If you wish to participate, you are welcome to review the candidates' statements and submit your choices on the voting page. Suggestion regarding behaviour with other users[edit]

Hey man, happy new year and hope you're doing well. Just wanted to say that I just saw your recent interaction with Goals and I do agree with you, you can do whatever you want with your talk page (although I do suggest keeping the stuff or at least archiving it), but I would like to see some more kind in your responses instead of appearing abrasive. Not saying that is what you are but that is kinda how you come off. Like with goals, you could have just said "This is my talk page. I have every right to remove what I don't like. Thank you." or something. Just a suggestion as I don't want you to get in trouble in the future. Cheers. --ArsenalFan700 (talk) 20:11, 6 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Swastik 25, and thanks for entering the Wikipedia:Take the lead! competition. A bit of friendly advice[edit]

Hi Swastik, I've noticed you've found yourself in a bit of trouble recently. Can I give you a little bit of advice? It would be a shame if you get kicked from Wikipedia, because I can see you are generally trying to do the right thing. Hopefully you will take the two week break, concentrate on your study and come back better than ever. If it is possible for you to find a copy, I suggest you read the book "The Power of Passion" by Justin Langer. It is a great book about his recovery from "rock bottom" in his career. If you can find it I am sure you will enjoy it. AtHomeIn神戸 (talk) 13:09, 19 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]

@Athomeinkobe: Will definitely try. And thanks a lot for your friendly advice. Swastik Chakraborty (User talk) 15:41, 19 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]
I don't know if ProudBengali is your another account or not. Or one of your WikiEnemy is posing it as you. We can't decide it unless CU test is done. Still I will advise you to not create any alternative account during your block period. Either you make valid unblock request or keep quite for 2 weeks. Block evasion will only lead you to get blocked permanently. So it is better to get blocked for 2 weeks than getting blocked permanently. I think you are useful editor as far as sports related articles are concerned, so behave like mature editor and take your blocks positively and learn from it. I will again advise you to keep calm for 2 weeks, don't even log in if you don't want to do unblock request. Take my advise seriously. Don't create any other account. I am your well-wisher.--Human3015 It will rain  20:05, 19 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]
@Human3015: I know that you are my well-wisher. But frankly speaking, I'm not aware of the conspiracy going around against me for the last 2 days. Anyway, thanks a lot for your kind behaviour. See you after 2 weeks. Swastik Chakraborty (User talk) 20:10, 19 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]

One of Adam Cuerden’s several quality restorations during round 1

That's it, the first round is done, sign-ups are closed and we're into round 2. Forty-seven competitors move into this round (a bit shy of the expected 64), and we are roughly broken into eight groups of six. Thirty-one contestants saw their DYKs appear on the main page, with a commanding lead (28) by Wales Cwmhiraeth (submissions). Twenty-nine participants conducted GA reviews with Lancashire J Milburn (submissions) completing nine.

Unblock request[edit]

This user's unblock request has been reviewed by an administrator, who declined the request. Other administrators may also review this block, but should not override the decision without good reason (see the blocking policy).

SWASTIK 25 (block logactive blocksglobal blockscontribsdeleted contribsfilter logcreation logchange block settingsunblockcheckuser (log))

Request reason:

Though it's true that I was engaged in an edit war with User:GoalsGalore and was blocked for a week for that, it seems to me that my account was hacked multiple times after that; I didn't make any of the edits I was blocked for. — Swastik Chakraborty (User talk) 06:18, 26 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Decline reason:

While your original block was for edit warring, your block since then has been for abusing multiple accounts. The sockpuppet investigation found that there was no technical distinction between yourself and ProudBengali. Your claim that your account was hacked is a new excuse, seemingly made now that your other excuses have failed. As GiantSnowman says above, I would recommend taking this opportunity for a Wikibreak, and appeal against this again in a few months time, demonstrating that you:

  1. understand what you have been blocked for,
  2. will not continue to cause damage or disruption, and
  3. will make useful contributions instead.

Please read the guide to appealing blocks for more information. Harrias talk 07:30, 26 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]

@Harrias: I'm not here to give any lame excuses. And if your reason is considered, then also the extent of my block would be of 2 weeks as stated earlier. So, why am I blocked for indefinite time? Can you explain this? — Swastik Chakraborty (User talk) 07:53, 26 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]

If you want to make any further unblock requests, please read the guide to appealing blocks first, then use the {{unblock}} template again. If you make too many unconvincing or disruptive unblock requests, you may be prevented from editing this page until your block has expired. Do not remove this unblock review while you are blocked.

Unsolicited advice - take Wikipedia's standard offer[edit]

Hi there. Though you've gotten yourself into a pickle with the community, "indefinite" doesn't mean "forever". I recommend you consider taking the standard offer. Stay away from editing Wikipedia for six months. That doesn't mean do it without being caught, that means actually be honest with yourself and stay away for six months. Don't monkey with your talk page, just stay completely away from editing. After that, come back, open another unblock request, acknowledge your problematic behavior, explain what you've learned and provide a clear plan for how you will avoid the problematic behavior in the future, and it's not out of the question that you could be unblocked. The alternative scenario is just going to suck. If you continue the sockpuppetry, you will irritate more people who will never want to see you return. Sockpuppets are reviled because they ooze self-entitlement, believing that their one-man show is more important than the community. Note also that per WP:REVERTBAN, if you are discovered, anything you have submitted while participating in sockpuppetry may be removed by any user. That means any article you create may be deleted and any hard work you perform will be wasted energy. Save yourself and everybody else the headaches--the standard offer is the smarter way to go. Take care, Cyphoidbomb (talk) 17:06, 2 June 2016 (UTC)[reply]

@Cyphoidbomb: Will you please specify me the date when I'll be able to submit an unblock request? — Swastik Chakraborty (User talk) 17:08, 2 June 2016 (UTC)[reply]
That sort of depends on you and your sense of honesty. What's the most recent account you created in violation of your indefinite block? If it hasn't yet been discovered, tell us, and we'll start the clock today. Otherwise, we'd have to go by the last discovered sock. That might result in a quicker unblock, but it wouldn't be honest. You will receive a better response from admins if you come clean about everything. Cyphoidbomb (talk) 19:38, 2 June 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Invitation from Wikipedia Asian Month 2016[edit]

Thanks for partipating Wikipedia Asian Month last year, and I hope you enjoy it. Last year, more than 7,000 articles contribute to Wikipedia in 43 languages in Wikipedia Asian Month, making us one of the largest event on Wikipedia. We will organize this event again in upcoming November, and would like to invite you join us again.

This year, we are lowering down the standards that you only need to create 4 (Four) articles to receive a postcard (new design), and articles only need to be more than 3,000 bytes and 300 words. We are also improving our postcard sending process, e.g. making the postcards right now, and collecting the address after the event ends without waiting other languges.

Wikipedians who create the most articles on each Wikipedia will be honored as "Wikipedia Asian Ambassadors". We will send you both digital copy, and a paper copy of the Ambassador certificate.

Thank you for considering! --AddisWang (talk)

WikiProject Good Articles's 2016-2017 GA Cup[edit]

WikiProject Good Articles's 2016-2017 GA Cup

Greetings, all!

We would like to announce the start of the 4th GA Cup, a competition that seeks to encourage the reviewing of Good article nominations! Thus far, there have been three GA Cups, which were successful in reaching our goals of significantly reducing the traditionally long queue at GAN, so we're doing it again. Currently, there are over 400 nominations listed. We hope that we can again make an impact this time.

The 4th GA Cup will begin on November 1, 2016. Four rounds are currently scheduled (which will bring the competition to a close on February 28, 2017), but this may change based on participant numbers. We may take a break in December for the holidays, depending on the results of a poll of our participants taken shortly after the competition begins. The sign-up and submissions process will remain the same, as will the scoring.

ArbCom Elections 2016: Voting now open![edit]

Hello, SWASTIK 25. Voting in the 2016 Arbitration Committee elections is open from Monday, 00:00, 21 November through Sunday, 23:59, 4 December to all unblocked users who have registered an account before Wednesday, 00:00, 28 October 2016 and have made at least 150 mainspace edits before Sunday, 00:00, 1 November 2016.

The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.

If you wish to participate in the 2016 election, please review the candidates' statements and submit your choices on the voting page. MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 22:08, 21 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Request reason:

I was blocked indefinitely because of sock puppetry, and was away from any sort of editing for the past 6 months. I've realised my mistakes and want to get unblocked. I will obey the rules of editing in Wikipedia, if I get unblocked. — Swastik Chakraborty (User talk) 10:26, 9 December 2016 (UTC)

Decline reason:

No response to my request, below, in nine days. Boing! said Zebedee (talk) 08:48, 18 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]

If you want to make any further unblock requests, please read the guide to appealing blocks first, then use the {{unblock}} template again. If you make too many unconvincing or disruptive unblock requests, you may be prevented from editing this page until your block has expired. Do not remove this unblock review while you are blocked.

Here's a few suggestions that might help your request...

  1. Explain what your mistakes were so that a reviewer can tell if you really do understand.
  2. Explain how your behaviour will be different if unblocked.
  3. Identify any sock accounts that have not been included here and here.
  4. Remove that unpleasant and threatening message at the very top of this page.

Boing! said Zebedee (talk) 20:31, 6 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]

@Boing! said Zebedee: I've done what you had said. — Swastik Chakraborty (User talk) 10:26, 9 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]
I see you have done 4, thank you. Now what about 1, 2 and 3? Boing! said Zebedee (talk) 10:28, 9 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]
@Boing! said Zebedee: I've modified my unblock request as per your questions. And this one's also my account. — Swastik Chakraborty (User talk) 10:31, 9 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]
The point of my suggestions is that just saying "I've realised my mistakes" is itself not sufficient, and that you need to explain what those mistakes were in a way that makes it clear that you really do understand. Also, "I will obey the rules" is not a sufficient explanation of how your behaviour will differ, and I want to hear an actual explanation of the changes you intend to make in your approach to editing. In my time here I've heard many blocked editors claiming they understand the problems and making vague promises like these, but so many of have gone on to show they actually didn't understand at all, and they ended up blocked again with little chance of unblock. I don't want that to happen to you, and I do want to help you to get unblocked. So, thank you for identifying that other account, but now, please, take your time and give us a full explanation in response to points 1 and 2 of my suggestions. Boing! said Zebedee (talk) 10:54, 9 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]
To show some support for you, I have place the unblock request on hold, and I'll consult with the blocking admin when I see your full response to these questions. Boing! said Zebedee (talk) 10:58, 9 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]
I'm afraid I don't trust this user - I suggest we SPI to ensure there has been no socking or editing from IPs in the past 6 months. GiantSnowman 12:24, 9 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, I think that would be reasonable. Boing! said Zebedee (talk) 12:55, 9 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]
I would also agree - there have been a couple of accounts lately that might possibly be connected, based on editing habits and usernames. Harrias talk 14:57, 9 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]
@GiantSnowman: Will you please inform me whether I've any chances of getting unblocked or not? — Swastik Chakraborty (User talk) 06:48, 18 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]
You won't get unblocked if you fail to answer the questions asked of you. I left your request on hold for nine days to give you time to "give us a full explanation in response to points 1 and 2 of my suggestions", but you ignored that and so I have declined it now. Boing! said Zebedee (talk) 08:51, 18 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]
@Boing! said Zebedee: Swastik indicated in a previous that his account was hacked and that he didn't make the XYZ edits that led to his block. If it is true that his account was hacked/compromised, then based on my understanding, we'd never unblock this account. In which case, Swastik would have to satisfy your questions, and then he'd probably have to open a new account with your permission. (And maybe he'd have to declare it on his new user page?) If the hack/compromise did not occur, Swastik would need to explain this (and pretty much admit that he was lying.) Cyphoidbomb (talk) 22:43, 18 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]
I hadn't actually thought much beyond the questions I asked, and I was going to consult with the blocking editor after that and also ask for a checkuser check. But as there was no attempt to respond, I'm done - it's over to the next reviewing admin (or UTRS) now. Boing! said Zebedee (talk) 09:06, 19 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]
@Boing! said Zebedee: I admit that I had lied because I was too much addicted to Wikipedia. I couldn't refrain myself from editing. So, I created those accounts using different usernames. But now, I assure that I'll no further do anything against the rule of Wikipedia. I apologize. Can I get unblocked now? — Swastik Chakraborty (User talk) 11:41, 16 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Make a new unblock request and someone will review it (but not me as I have very little time for Wikipedia at the moment). Boing! said Zebedee (talk) 16:53, 16 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]

WikiCup December newsletter: WikiCup 2017[edit]

On 1 January 2017, WikiCup 2017 (the 10th Annual WikiCup) will begin. This year we are trying something a little different – monetary prizes.

For the WC2017 the prizes will be as follows (amounts are based in US$ and will be awarded in the form of an online Amazon gift certificate):

  • First place – $200
  • Second & Third place – $50 each
  • Category prizes – $25 per category (which will be limited to FA, FL, FP, GA, and DYK for 2017). Winning a category prize does not require making it to the final round.

Note: Monetary prizes are a one-year experiment for 2017 and may or may not be continued in the future. In order to be eligible to receive any of the prizes above, the competing Wikipedia account must have a valid/active email address.

After two years as a WikiCup judge, Figureskatingfan is stepping down. We thank her for her contributions as a WikiCup judge. We are pleased to announce that our newest judge is two-time WikiCup champion Cwmhiraeth.

The judges for the 2017 WikiCup are Godot13 (talk · contribs · email), Cwmhiraeth (talk · contribs), and Sturmvogel 66 (talk · contribs · email).

March 2017 WikiCup newsletter[edit]

And so ends the first round of the competition, with 4 points required to qualify for round 2. It would have been 5 points, but when a late entrant was permitted to join the contest in February, a promise was made that his inclusion would not result in the exclusion of any other competitor. To achieve this, the six entrants that had the lowest positive score of 4 points have been added to the 64 people who otherwise would have qualified. As a result, some of the groups have nine contestants rather than eight. Our top four scorers in round 1 were:

  • Scotland Cas Liber, last year's winner, led the field with two featured articles on birds and a total score of 674.
  • European Union Iry-Hor, a WikiCup newcomer, came next with a featured article, a good article and a tally of 282 bonus points for a score of 517. All these points came from the article Nyuserre Ini, an Ancient Egyptian pharaoh,
  • Japan 1989, another WikiCup newcomer, was in joint third place at 240. 1989 has claimed points for two featured lists and one good article relating to anime and comedy series, all of which were awarded bonus points.
  • South Australia Peacemaker67 shared third place with five good articles and thirteen good article reviews, mostly on naval vessels. He is also new to the competition.

The largest number of DYKs have been submitted by Vivvt and The C of E, who each claimed for seven, and MBlaze Lightning achieved eight articles at ITN. Carbrera and Peacemaker67 each claimed for five GAs and Krishna Chaitanya Velaga was well out in front for GARs, having reviewed 32. No featured pictures, featured topics or good topics yet, but we have achieved three featured articles and a splendid total of fifty good articles.

So, on to the second round. Remember that any content promoted after the end of round 1 but before the start of round 2 can be claimed in round 2. Invitations for collaborative writing efforts or any other discussion of potentially interesting work is always welcome on the WikiCup talk page. Remember, if two or more WikiCup competitors have done significant work on an article, all can claim points equally.

If you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is a good article candidate, a featured process, or anything else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews. If you want to help out with the WikiCup, please do your bit to help keep down the review backlogs! Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages or by email. Good luck!  In progress. Regardless of the results of the check, which are never perfect at this stage anyway, the unblock request is hardly convincing, and I wouldn't be inclined to unblock the user.--Bbb23 (talk) 14:21, 24 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]

May 2017 WikiCup newsletter[edit]

The second round of the competition has now closed, with just under 100 points being required to qualify for round 3. YellowEvan just scraped into the next round with 98 points but we have to say goodbye to the thirty or so competitors who didn't achieve this threshold; thank you for the useful contributions you have made to the Cup and Wikipedia. Our top scorers in round 2 were:

  • Scotland Cas Liber, led the field with five featured articles, four on birds and one on astronomy, and a total score of 2049, half of which came from bonus points.
  • Japan 1989 was in second place with 826 points, 466 of which were bonus points. 1989 has claimed points mostly relating to anime and Japanese-related articles.
  • South Australia Peacemaker67 took third place with two FAs, one GA and seven GARs, mostly on naval vessels or military personnel, scoring 543 points.
  • Other contestants who scored over 400 points were Freikorp, Carbrera, and Czar. Of course all these points are now wiped out and the 32 remaining contestants start again from zero in round 3.

Vivvt submitted the largest number of DYKs (30), and MBlaze Lightning achieved 13 articles at ITN. Carbrera claimed for 11 GAs and Argento Surfer performed the most GARs, having reviewed 11. So far we have achieved 38 featured articles and a splendid 132 good articles. Commendably, 279 GARs have been achieved so far, more than double the number of GAs.

So, on to the third round. Remember that any content promoted after the end of round 2 but before the start of round 3 can be claimed in round 3. Remember too that you must claim your points within 10 days of "earning" them. Invitations for collaborative writing efforts or any other discussion of potentially interesting work is always welcome on the WikiCup talk page. Remember, if two or more WikiCup competitors have done significant work on an article, all can claim points equally.

WikiCup 2017 July newsletter[edit]

The third round of the competition has finished in a flurry of last minute activity, with 288 points being required to qualify for round 4. It was a hotly competitive round with all but four of the contestants exceeding the 106 points that was necessary to proceed to round 4 last year. Coemgenus and Freikorp tied on 288, and both have been allowed to proceed, so round 4 now has one pool of eight competitors and one of nine.

Round 3 saw the achievement of a 26-topic Featured topic by MPJ-DK as well as 5 featured lists and 13 featured articles. PanagiotisZois and SounderBruce achieved their first ever featured articles. Carbrera led the GA score with 10, Tachs achieved 17 DYKs and MBlaze Lightning 10 In the news items. There were 167 DYKs, 93 GARs and 82 GAs overall, this last figure being higher than the number of GAs in round 2, when twice as many people were taking part. Even though contestants performed more GARs than they achieved GAs, there was still some frustration at the length of time taken to get articles reviewed.

As we start round 4, we say goodbye to the fifteen or so competitors who didn't quite make it; thank you for the useful contributions you have made to the Cup and Wikipedia. Remember that any content promoted after the end of round 3 but before the start of round 4 can be claimed in round 4. Remember too that you must claim your points within 10 days of "earning" them (some people have fallen foul of this rule and the points have been removed).

If you are concerned that your nomination, whether it be for a good article, a featured process, or anything else, will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews. It would be helpful if this list could be cleared of any items no longer relevant. If you want to help out with the WikiCup, please do your bit to keep down the review backlogs! WikiCup 2017 September newsletter[edit]

Round 4 of the WikiCup has ended and we move forward into the final round. In round 4, a total of 12 FAs, 3 FLs, 44 GAs, 3 FLs, 79 DYKs, 1 ITN and 42 GARs was achieved, with no FPs or FTs this time. Congratulations to Peacemaker67 on the Royal Yugoslav Navy Good Topic of 36 items, and the 12 featured articles achieved by Cas Liber (5), Vanamonde93 (3), Peacemaker67 (2), Adityavagarwal (1) and 12george1 (1). With a FA scoring 200 points, and bonus points available on top of this, FAs are likely to feature heavily in the final round. Meanwhile Yellow Evan, a typhoon specialist, was contributing 12 DYKs and 10 GAs, while Adityavagarwal and Freikorp topped the GAR list with 8 reviews each. As we enter the final round, we are down to eight contestants, and we would like to thank those of you who have been eliminated for the useful contributions you have made to the Cup and Wikipedia. The lowest score needed to reach round 5 was 305, and I think we can expect a highly competitive final round.

Remember that any content promoted after the end of round 4 but before the start of round 5 can be claimed in round 5. Remember too that you must claim your points within 10 days of "earning" them. WikiCup 2018[edit]

So the 2017 WikiCup has come to an end. Congratulations to the winner, to the other finalists and to all those who took part. 177 contestants signed up, more than usual, but not all of them submitted entries in the first round. Were editors attracted by the cash prizes offered for the first time this year, or were these irrelevant? Do the rules and scoring need changing for the 2018 WikiCup? If you have a view on these or other matters, why not join in the WikiCup discussion about next year's contest? Supporting Indian Wikipedia Program resource distribution[edit]

In 2017 - 2018, the Wikimedia Foundation and Google working in close coordination with the Centre for Internet and Society (CIS), Wikimedia India chapter (WMIN) and user groups will pilot a program encouraging Wikipedia communities to create locally relevant and high-quality content in Indian languages. This program (Code name: Project Tiger) will:

(a) Support active and experienced Wikipedia editors through the donation of laptops and stipends for internet access and
(b) Sponsor a language-based contest that aims to address existing Wikipedia content gaps.

The objective of the program is to provide laptops and internet stipends for existing editors who need support to contribute more actively. 50 basic model Acer Chromebooks and Internet stipends for 100 contributors are available for distribution. Provided resources are the sole property of the beneficiaries and should be used for the betterment of the movement.

If you're an active Wikimedian, and interested to receive support from this project, please apply. It will take around 10 minutes of your time, and will ask descriptive questions about your contribution to Indic Wikimedia projects.

WikiCup 2018 March newsletter[edit]

And so ends the first round of the competition, with 4 points required to qualify for round 2. With 53 contestants qualifying, the groups for round 2 are slightly smaller than usual, with the two leaders from each group due to qualify for round 3 as well as the top sixteen remaining users.

Our top scorers in round 1 were:

  • United States Aoba47 led the field with a featured article, 8 good articles and 42 GARs, giving a total of 666 points.
  • Germany FrB.TG , a WikiCup newcomer, came next with 600 points, gained from a featured article and masses of bonus points.
  • India Ssven2, another WikiCup newcomer, was in third place with 403 points, garnered from a featured article, a featured list, a good article and twelve GARs.
  • United States Ceranthor, India Numerounovedant, Minnesota Carbrera, Netherlands Farang Rak Tham and Romania Cartoon network freak all had over 200 points, but like all the other contestants, now have to start again from scratch. A good achievement was the 193 GARs performed by WikiCup contestants, comparing very favourably with the 54 GAs they achieved.

Remember that any content promoted after the end of round 1 but before the start of round 2 can be claimed in round 2. Invitations for collaborative writing efforts or any other discussion of potentially interesting work is always welcome on the WikiCup talk page. Remember, if two or more WikiCup competitors have done significant work on an article, all can claim points. If you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is at good article candidates, a featured process, or anywhere else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews.

If you want to help out with the WikiCup, please do your bit to help keep down the review backlogs! Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages or by email. Good luck! If you wish to start or stop receiving this newsletter, please feel free to add or remove yourself from Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send. Project Tiger Writing Contest[edit]

In 2017 – 2018, the Wikimedia Foundation and Google working in close coordination with the Centre for Internet and Society (CIS), Wikimedia India Chapter (WMIN) and user groups from India, are piloting a program encouraging Wikipedia communities to create locally relevant and high-quality content in Indian languages. This program will (a) support active and experienced Wikipedia editors through the donation of laptops and stipends for internet access and (b) sponsor a language-based contest that aims to address existing Wikipedia content gaps.

Phase (a) has been completed, during which active contributors were awarded laptops and internet stipends. Phase (b) will be a contest in which editors will come together and develop a writing contest focused on content gaps. Each month three individual prizes will be awarded to each community based on their contribution for the month. The prizes worth 3,000 INR, 2000 INR, and 1,000 INR, will be awarded to the top contributors for each month. The contest started at March 1, 2018, 0:00, and will end at May 31, 2018, 23:59 (IST). Useful links are as follows:

WikiCup 2018 May newsletter[edit]

The second round of the 2018 WikiCup has now finished. Most contestants who advanced to the next round scored upwards of 100 points, but two with just 10 points managed to scrape through into round 3. Our top scorers in the last round were:

  • Scotland Cas Liber, our winner in 2016, with three featured articles
  • Republic of Texas Iazyges, with nine good articles and lots of bonus points
  • India Yashthepunisher, a first time contestant, with two featured lists
  • Cascadia (independence movement) SounderBruce, a finalist last year, with seventeen good topic articles
  • United States Usernameunique, a first time contestant, with fourteen DYKs
  • San Francisco Muboshgu, a seasoned competitor, with three ITNs and
  • South Carolina Courcelles, another first time contestant, with twenty-seven GARs

So far contestants have achieved twelve featured articles between them and a splendid 124 good articles. Commendably, 326 GARs have been completed during the course of the 2018 WikiCup, so the backlog of articles awaiting GA review has been reduced as a result of contestants' activities. As we enter the third round, remember that any content promoted after the end of round 2 but before the start of round 3 can be claimed in round 3. Remember too that you must claim your points within 14 days of "earning" them. When doing GARs, please make sure that you check that all the GA criteria are fully met; most of the GARs are fine, but a few have been a bit skimpy.

If you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is at good article nominations, a featured process, or anywhere else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews Needed (remember to remove your listing when no longer required). Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages or by email. Good luck! If you wish to start or stop receiving this newsletter, please feel free to add or remove your name from Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send.
