Welcome![edit]

Some cookies to welcome you! :D

Welcome to Wikipedia, Sammypepys! I am Triwbe and have been editing Wikipedia for quite some time. I just wanted to say hi and welcome you to Wikipedia! If you have any questions, feel free to leave me a message on my talk page or by typing {{helpme}} at the bottom of this page. I love to help new users, so don't be afraid to leave a message! I hope you like the place and decide to stay. Here are some pages that you might find helpful:

I hope you enjoy editing here and being a Wikipedian! Oh yeah, I almost forgot, when you post on talk pages you should sign your name on talk pages using four tildes (~~~~); that should automatically produce your username and the date after your post. If you need help, check out Wikipedia:Questions, ask me on my talk page, or place {{helpme}} on your talk page and ask your question there. Again, welcome! Norman Giller[edit]

Hi again. This article needs more references. I can find plenty to support the writing and publishing history, but more the more personal stuff needs specific citations. Wikipedia is very strict with Biographies of living persons and requires good Reliable sources.

Lastly if you have any close connection to Norman Giller then be aware of the Wikipedia:Conflict of interest policy and if you are the man, then I am impressed and be aware of Wikipedia:Autobiography and Wikipedia:Neutral point of view. --Triwbe (talk) 06:04, 14 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Not quite sure where I should be talking to you, Trwibe. I have said my thank yous on your 'Talk' page, and have made a small contribution to Wikipedia funds.

If you get a spare second, I would appreciate advice as to what sort of citations I can come up with to remove any elements of doubt as to my identiy. On a personal level, what do you do when you're not Wikipediaing? I would guess you earn you daily bread from computers. Kindest regards Norman Giller Sammypepys (talk) 14:01, 14 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Sammy, actually who you are is neither here nor there. All on wikipedia are welcome and everyone can edit information on any subject, regardless of expertise or experience.

The only information about me I want people to know is on my user page, but basically, yes, I do work in computers, but I travel a lot as well, everywhere EXCEPT the USA.

Now on to the article. Who you are, or claim to be makes no difference, we don't need a photo for proof (but a photo for the article would be nice, more on this is in a moment). Since anyone can add any information to Wikipedia all edits must be justified by an edit comment and verifiable by listing the source of the information which must be from "a reliable 3rd party source". This means no what is called "original research" e.g. I saw this event, I am this person, I discovered. No self published sources e.g. Self made web sites, blogs, authorsonline etc. Secondary sources are not banned but not so good as sources, e.g. personal details published by agents or in a press release. What we need are references to books, newspapers, the BBC (reliable? I don't know :-). Independent dependable sources so that any reader can come along, see a fact, and, with a little effort, can check that the fact is true and not made up.

Because of this writing an article about yourself is not considered a good idea. How can we be sure what you write is not biased by your own point of view. I spend a lot of time removing what are considered non-proven "peacock" phrases such as "He was revered" or "he was the funniest, cleverest, sexiest.." etc. These are very "point of view terms". I would say what can be said about you/Norman Giller is that he is a prolific writer of English comedy and sports history/biographies and has been involved with many popular TV programmes and personalities etc etc (see I am not US based, even if I am a computer geek, I spell programme correctly :-).

Let me see what else I can find on the web, and I will also continue to fill in all the internal links to other TV and sports personalities.

I will keep an eye on your talk page (here) so you can reply here if you want.

Once more if you are NG I am in awe - slightly :-) --Triwbe (talk) 15:04, 14 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

You have really got me intrigued now! I don't blame you for not giving any more personal information. There are some real nutters out there (moi? No, I am the Real Deal). You were going to tell me about uploading a pic? I could give you ISBNs for each of my books. There is an all-embracing piece on me by Dr David Spencer, who runs our old school website at http://www.davidaspencer.com/oldraineians/pr036normangiller.html and respected publishers Hodder have a brief biog on me at http://www.hodderheadline.co.uk/authordetails.asp?author=26151 Forgive me for what is at first sight a very conceited and vain effort to get self publicity. A year ago I was diagnosed with a cancerous tumour (the surgeon who took it out said it was as big as Mike Tyson's fist .... I replied that I'm glad it was not as big as another infamous part of his anatomy ... I've cleaned that up for you Triwbe). It all made me realise that I could fall off my perch at any time, and Wikipedia is a good place to leave something for my descendants to look at. I have been careful to give facts and not comment. UK based, and several mentions of the Beeb. Surely you're not employed by Auntie? I am featured in Debrett's People of Today at https://people.debretts.co.uk/entrant.login.action If you want to see the entry I am willing to give you my user name and password. I shall stop pestering you now. Kindest regards Norman Sammypepys (talk) 17:34, 14 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Photo.[edit]

Oh yes. So for a photo, upload a photo of your choice but, again for copyright reasons, you must declare 1) you are the owner of the photo and 2) the copyright your declare on the photo and 3) that you give permission for it to be used on wikipedia. Unless you are contracted or tied some how I would suppose a non-commercial type one would suit you, but it is up to you. See Wikipedia:Copyright_FAQ#Licenses.

If and when you have done so, put the name up here and I will place it in the article.

No I do not work for Auntie, and Auntie does not like my organisation very much. I spend a lot of time in Brussels and I will go to Strasbourg tomorrow and the Irish really upset my lot yesterday :-) --Triwbe (talk) 17:50, 14 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Now you know, Triwbe, why Gordon Brown won't allow a Referendum. With the turn-out they had in Ireland, it was barely a valid vote! I shall upload a pic ASAP. I cannot believe how quickly you have got my page looking ship-shape. Extremely impressed. So you must be thirty-something at the most ... only a young brain could take it all in. I shall gradually get an identikit together of you, and will then write my 81st book: "The Wikipedia Man" (based on the film, the Wicker Man). Enjoy your trip to Strasbourg. Uncle NormanSammypepys (talk) 18:01, 14 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I am not yet able to upload a picture because I am still waiting to become "an autoconfirmed user." I will let you get on without further interference. Safe journey.Sammypepys (talk) 18:23, 14 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Surprised to find you are middle-aged, Triwbe. As you know, I had you down for 30-something. Hope you're enjying your trip to Strasbourg. Any MEPs jumping off the roof? You will find petrol up to £9 a gallon when you get home. I have just swapped my Jaguar for a micro Micra. We will soon be taking out loans to buy petrol. Safe journey home. Sammypepys (talk) 19:49, 17 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I've been out of the UK for many years now, half my life, only visit the UK once every couple of years now. --Triwbe (talk) 20:24, 17 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Good day Triwbe. Hope you are summering and simmering well. From today the evenings start to gather in. I have uploaded a Norman Giller photo (Norman_giller_wiki.jpg‎ ) and have probably made a complete hash of it. Keep well. Sammypepys (talk) 11:22, 22 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Just a note Triwbe to let you know that I am happily surfing Wikipedia updating and making factual changes to other pages when I have time. You could say I am hooked! I agree with the Wikipedia principle that accuracy is paramount. Hope you are enjoying your summer. I notice you have huge input. Well done. Edison X Edson[edit]

Hi, Sammypepys. I think there is a misunderstanding in you edit in respect of this matter. Pelé's birth certificate is shown in the film Pelé Eterno, and we can see clearly that the name registered there is "Edison", with an "i" (the camera makes a close-up shot of the document, which practically fills the screen). Therefore, the use of the form "Edson" came later for a number of reasons, but Pelé's registered name is Edison, exactly like the American inventor. Best regards, MUSIKVEREIN (talk) 15:13, 13 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

In the birth certificate, it is 'Edison, his true name. If he is more known as Edson, it is another question. --Tonyjeff (talk) 21:27, 19 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
He may ask you to call him "Edson", but we cannot assume formally that his name is it, since "Edison" is what is written at his birth certificate. --Tonyjeff (talk) 18:24, 20 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I am not doubting that he may prefers to be called like that, what must be really true – and I did not alter your last edition at the article. But his "real" name is what was registered at his birth certificate. In Brazil, one must modify the registry of the name to be considered legally, just like Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva and José Sarney. Otherwise, it will be just like a nickname. Maybe Wikipedia is the only media to be strict enough to state that his name is "Edison". By the way, I have already the opportunity to talk with him personally. Cheers. --Tonyjeff (talk) 18:44, 20 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I beg to differ, TonyJeff. Wikipedia is the only media stubborn enough to go against the great man's wishes and refer to him as Edison. He is surely entitled to the good grace of Wiki readers knowing that he prefers to be called Edson. You would not call Bobby Moore Robert, Jimmy Greaves James or Tommy Lawton Thomas. Kindest regards Sammypepys (talk) 18:56, 20 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for your message, Sammypepys. The situation here is clear: as I said in my comment on the talk page back in January, there is a discrepancy between the way everybody in Brazil, Pelé included, refers to the latter's real name ("Edson") and the formal, legally accurate way ("Edison", as registered in his birth certificate). Since this seems to be an never-ending controversy here at Wikipedia, I would like to repeat my suggestion made back then that we mention this circumstance in the article, in a straightforward manner (something like "His real name is formally Edison, but everybody in Brazil refers to it as Edson", or words to that effect. Regards, MUSIKVEREIN (talk) 22:39, 20 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, Sammypepys ! I think your addition addresses this matter in a clear and satisfactory manner. And thanks for your kind words, too. Best regards, MUSIKVEREIN (talk) 12:31, 21 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Sammypepys, it is I who envy you: I'd give a finger to be able to collaborate with Pelé on a book about him. Congrats ! Best regards, MUSIKVEREIN (talk) 15:47, 21 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I'm also a jazz fan, Sammypepys. And incidentally, Oscar Peterson is one of my favourite jazz pianists (the others are Dave Brubeck and Erroll Garner). See you on the classical music and jazz Wikipedia pages ! Regards, MUSIKVEREIN (talk) 02:48, 22 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hope you're summering and simmering well Triwbe. If you let me have your address at author@thelaneofdreams.co.uk I will send you a copy of No 82. Sammypepys (talk) 08:36, 8 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Edison Pele[edit]

Hi, in spanish Wikipedia the administrators locked down the article Pelé for the insertion of the hoaxed name "Edison". It is clear the issue and also the user Tonyjeff created an account with the only purpose to put the hoax with the argument that Edison appears in a movie of Universal Studios. It is clear the unexistance of a primary source about the born registration of Pelé with the name "Edison" even if it appears in a movie. I hope the situation will finish. Wikipedia would not give wrong information about people. Greetings.--Futbolero (talk) 09:27, 1 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Muchos gracias, Futbolero. Edson it is :-) He was the King regardless of what you call him. Kindest regards Sammypepys (talk) 18:20, 15 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Disambiguation link notification for July 18[edit]

Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. Wikipedia appreciates your help. We noticed though that when you edited Stepney, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Danny Shea. Such links are almost always unintended, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of "Did you mean..." article titles. Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.

BOT's comments noted, but I will leave as it stands because the disambiguation page makes it perfectly clear which Danny Shea is intended. Thank you. Sammypepys (talk) 09:42, 18 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]
