In this edit you tag several screen-shot images I uploaded to the Bros page for UK certifications, several years ago. As the references are titled, these screen-shot images were taken from search results on https://www.bpi.co.uk/ , which is (or was at that point) the official site of the British Phonographic Industry, who issue certifications in the United Kingdom. The reason I cited screen-shots of search results, rather than link directly to that site, is the URL linked would only direct to the search page, and not display the search results - the user would then need to manually enter the band name to display these. I also did this because, at that time at least, the site was often temporarily offline. While you may dispute the correctness of referencing in this way, I thought I made it clear in the referencing which site the screen-shot was taken from, so that readers could, if they wished to, ascertain the accuracy of the search results themselves.Nqr9 (talk) 12:32, 15 January 2019 (UTC)

I see, but it's still not reliable as a source. You can now link directly to the certification like I did here. I was perhaps extra careful about sourcing because of socks adding unsourced and sometimes clearly incorrect information about certifications etc. Sjö (talk) 13:16, 15 January 2019 (UTC)

Actually, per WP:BURDEN it's you who have to show sources that support your addition. I don't dispute that irreducible complexity is used as an argument against evolution, but there are other arguments e.g. that an increase in order would violate the second law of thermodynamics and there are also even less sophisticated arguments about complexity. I believe what you say can best be described as an Etymological fallacy but your edit was removed mostly because it wasn't about how to improve the article. An article talk page isn't supposed to be a forum for general discussion or to express the personal views of the editors, but to discuss changes to its associated article. I made no claim about Islam. The changes I made was to Great Mosque of Mecca and a building is not a religion. Also, the building is important to Muslims of all branches. Just to say, the Smash Hits Poll Winners Party awards are probably true, but I can understand why you reverted them, as it's hard to believe anything a certain editor adds. I'll try and dig out the sources for them - it was the last time Craig Logan appeared in public with the band, so they almost certainly won something, given that they were the biggest teen pop band in the UK at the time, and Smash Hits was the UK's biggest teen pop music magazine. Your addition were unsourced and not proper English. At the very least they were not an improvement. The "citation" the article is about is very much an English word as this is the English Wikipedia, and the "oftenly famous" tagged on to the end of the sentence makes no sense in English. Like in Procuring (prostitution) your sentence made no sense, which is why I removed it. My take is that if something walks like a duck and quacks like a duck, it probably is a duck. In the same time the fact to be full of light, like if light emanate from someone it's not an english concept, there is no equivalent so yeah it's not proper english but still, it's the half of the définition of being pimpant(e) and it's a french concept explicate pretty well, with english words and relatively correct sentences. 

i'm sure that you have been able to understand the concept of being "lumineux(se)" + attract the eye = pimpant(e) = original definition that you can extend in the sens of attracting the attention to seductive, elegant and in the sens "lumineux(se)" to freshness, full of joy, full of life...

Cats and Islam

After doing a bit of research, there are differences of opinion regarding the issue of feeding cats as Muslims. Since cats are carnivores by nature, one should not force them to abstain from meat products if they cannot be obtained as Halal products, because that is animal abuse and goes against the teachings of the Qura'an and the Prophet (PBUH). That being said, there is clear benefit in buying traditional pet food because Halal pet food is expensive and difficult to attain. Wikipedia aims to describe the world as it is. If there is halal cat food we should report it. The only concern is that it could be WP:UNDUE, that is not mentioned enough in reliable sources. If you like, but I'm not happy with using a primary source. Also I think that it is WP:UNDUE to pick that debate article which IMO isn't proportional to the coverage in media. This is also because it is a Social Democratic tactic to liken the (former) Alliance parties to the Sweden Democrats, which means that coverage in our article must be very neutral. Mistakes in the Swedish Wiki I can't correct

I am blocked for life on Swedish Wikipedia, which is a bit frustrating, as some important articles (on Jewish matters) have serious errors.

E.g. I'm not sure how many days Easter is celebrated in the Christian calendar, (Good Friday, Easter Monday) but I know that the Jewish festival of Passover is seven days in Israel and eight days in the diaspora. The English article is correct: the Swedish article is wrong (The Swedish article assumes Passover is only one day).

Jewish sabbaths and festivals start at sunset. Their conclusion is extended to nightfall.

But the Swedish article gives wrong information again. It says that Passover finishes at sunset.

The lead of the Swedish article follows:

Shabbos and Yom Tovim (festivals on which no work may be done) are concluded when three stars are visible in the night sky on a cloudless night. Otherwise astronomical calculations are used to reckon when that would be.

In the body of the Swedish article "Pesach" there is correct info in the body of text, but the lead is as I have quoted above and, I think, misleading.

Concerning the time Passover concludes, this is governed by a voluntary desire to extend the holiday and its observance, and although the day finishes at sunset, times given in calendars for the ending of a Sabbath or festival are nightfall, when three starts are visible in the night sky (on a clear day).

All this makes for a thorough knowledge of Jewish law being required before editng an article intended to be authoritative.

Non-Jews are welcome to edit articles on Wikipedia, but it is not certain they have studied Jewish law (halakha) in depth.

@RPSM:: No, I will not "correct" the Swedish article sv:Pesach except to clarify in the lede that the celebration starts on the 15th of Nisan. @Dweller:: And no, I don't think that RPSM should be unblocked on the Swedish Wikipedia. RPSM was bocked for being disruptive in many different ways, and this conversation and other recent edits have shown that the same editing pattern remains. RPSM edits on svwiki included that he edited with a non-neutral POV, inserted walls of text with little or none relevance to the matter being discussed, didn't provide sources, considered his own unsourced opinions to be authoritative facts, didn't answer questions, didn't indent in discussions and objected to non-jews editing articles pertaining to Judaism (unless they were experts on the subject of Jewish law). RPSM also had a problem with reading comprehension when reading Swedish, leading him to find errors in articles where they didn't exist, and anti-semitism in edits where they didn't exist.
This thread was started because RPSM didn't read and understand the Swedish article. When asked a direct question he responded with a wall of unattributed copied text, leaving it to me to figure out how that related to the question at hand. As you can see this addition wasn't indented. Instead of providing a source he told me what he was taught as if that is a reliable source. His 15:48 12 April addition is just too little, too late.
There have been other examples. This is an example of RPSM adding a wall of text for some unclear purpose, and this is an addition of an unsourced and very POV statement. In my opinion, if RPSM was unblocked on svwiki he would continue his disruptive editing and eventually be blocked again. This thread was started because the Swedish article gave the clear understanding in the lede of the Swedish article that Passover (Pesach) is a one day festival. That was my understanding from reading it and it has now been corrected. Many thanks. Many Christians come to an article on Passover because they wonder about how it was celebrated in temple times when Jesus was alive, and what the Jewish observance was and is. Was Jesus Christ crucified on the 14th of Nisan April 3 - 33 or the 15th April? The essential point is clarity and truth and to remove any possible misunderstandings. Just to clarify about the Swedish article Pesach and the English article Passover - both of them say the festival lasts from sunset to sunset, which is true. But in actual practice, a weekly sabbath or a Yom Tov is extended by a few minutes at the start and at the conclusion by extending the concluding time regular orthodox Jews observe from sunset to nightfall (three stars visible in the sky). Haredim have another custom that adds on even more time. The basic principe is that a sabbath may not be shortened, but it is meritorious to extend it. The proper thing to do is to mention this on the talk page of the article, and those who are knowledgeable will correct it.

@Sjö::I think I should put here that I had no intention of implying or suggesting you ever were or are an anti-Semite. This is because I have not detected or seen or heard that you, Sjö, have ever done or said anything of a racist or antisemitic nature. The article, for the benefit of those who do not understand Swedish is about a doctoral dissertation by someone who works at the Holocaust Centre in Norway on antisemitism focusing on mainstream media in the 1930s. A cartoonist, praised after the WWII for his lampoons of Nazis during the war, on researching his pre-war production in the 1930s, is discovered to have been producing the caricatures typical of the time (Jews with disproportionsally large noses). The main point in the dissertation is that this kind of antisemitism was not done by a few odd individuals on the fringe, but was standard fare in regular newsapers and weekend satirical magazines. I think I can manage now. The mistake remaining in the Swedish article comes from copying from the English article "Passover" where there is a mistake there. It is very important to some people to observe Jewish sabbaths and festivals correctly and time - commencement and conclusion - is a vital factor. Hi there

Hi, I am the person that keeps adding to this article. In ancient Greek, there are no principles in where the definite articles go (definite articles are 24 cases of the word "the"). Where we know the difference is in the case ending of the definite articles and the noun and verbs(there are two paradigms to learn these). The eta as you pointed out and I keep adding has a harsh breathing mark over it rendering a breathing sound to make 'ay to hay. The definite articles range from masculine, feminine and neuter in singular and plural then divided into: nominative, genative, dative and accusative. For nouns only. What you said about the placement of the hay in between is modern Greek. So, I guess you and I correct there too.

 I would like to discuss this further with you or David in detail somewhere, if I may. I don't know how we'd exchange email addresses. But I would like to correct your understanding of Koine Greek.

Niharika Kohli, a product manager for the growth team, announced that work is underway in implementing improvements to New Page Patrol as part of the 2019 Community Wishlist and suggests all who are interested watch the project page on meta. Two requested improvements have already been completed. These are:

  • Allow filtering by no citations in page curation
  • Not having CSD and PRODs automatically marked as reviewed, reflecting current consensus among reviewers and current Twinkle functionality.
Reliable Sources for NPP

Rosguill has been compiling a list of reliable sources across countries and industries that can be used by new page patrollers to help judge whether an article topic is notable or not. At this point further discussion is needed about if and how this list should be used. @Spidy30: I think you are wrong. Malaco was founded in Sweden and has always been located in Sweden. The brand is now owned by a Swedish company. [Here are ten US companies founded by foreigners and I don't think that you would have any success convincing Wikipedia editors that they, therefore, aren't American.

More new features are being added to the feed, including the important red alert for previously deleted pages. This will only work if it is selected in your filters. Best is to 'select all'. Do take a moment to check out all the new features if you have not already done so. If anything is not working as it should, please let us know at NPR. There is now also a live queue of AfC submissions in the New Pages Feed. Feel free to review AfCs, but bear in mind that NPP is an official process and policy and is more important.

QUALITY of REVIEWING

Articles are still not always being checked thoroughly enough. If you are not sure what to do, leave the article for a more experienced reviewer. Please be on the alert for any incongruities in patrolling and help your colleagues where possible; report patrollers and autopatrolled article creators who are ostensibly undeclared paid editors. The displayed ORES alerts offer a greater 'at-a-glance' overview, but the new challenges in detecting unwanted new content and sub-standard reviewing do not necessarily make patrolling any easier, nevertheless the work may have a renewed interest factor of a different kind. A vibrant community of reviewers is always ready to help at NPR.

Backlog

The backlog is still far too high at between 7,000 and 8,000. Of around 700 user rights holders, 80% of the reviewing is being done by just TWO users. In the light of more and more subtle advertising and undeclared paid editing, New Page Reviewing is becoming more critical than ever.

Move to draft

NPR is triage, it is not a clean up clinic. This move feature is not limited to bios so you may have to slightly re-edit the text in the template before you save the move. Anything that is not fit for mainspace but which might have some promise can be draftified - particularly very poor English and machine and other low quality translations.

Notifying users

Remember to use the message feature if you are just tagging an article for maintenance rather than deletion. Otherwise articles are likely to remain perma-tagged. Many creators are SPA and have no intention of returning to Wikipedia. Use the feature too for leaving a friendly note note for the author of a first article you found well made or interesting. Many have told us they find such comments particularly welcoming and encouraging.

PERM

Admins are now taking advantage of the new time-limited user rights feature. If you have recently been accorded NPR, do check your user rights to see if this affects you. Depending on your user account preferences, you may receive automated notifications of your rights changes. Requests for permissions are not mini-RfAs. Helpful comments are welcome if absolutely necessary, but the bot does a lot of the work and the final decision is reserved for admins who do thorough research anyway.

Bros page vandalism

Hi Sjö, I believe that your recent sock puppet accusation for user Choiyang may be inaccurate, for the reasons I've specified on their talk page. I too jumped to the same conclusion when I saw the Bros page had recently been edited by someone citing Smash Hits (as TomWatkins1970 often does, though only in the edit summary, and his references are never specific [and the information is totally false]); but I think in this instance that the user is genuine. If you look at the citations they've added in their recent edits (admittedly, not done perfectly), they link to pages that support their claims.Nqr9 (talk) 13:38, 15 August 2019 (UTC)

You were probably right, then. I haven't paid close attention to their edits recently - I got a bit tired of doing so a while back. I didn't actually read the sites they had cited in recent edits, but was surprised that they led to online sources - as usually, they just add 'Smash Hits' and some other gibberish in their edit summaries, rather than add citations to their edits. Yes, I did just read WP:ERAS. In fact, I refered to it (as MOS:BCE) in this edit. Why do you ask? I believe that my revert undid an edit that went against the MOS, specifically the parts about consistency within the same article and not changing the established era style without reasons "specific to its content" and then only with consensus on the talk page. This month's refresher course

Why I Hate Speedy Deleters, a 2008 essay by long since retired Ballonman, is still as valid today. Those of us who patrol large numbers of new pages can be forgiven for making the occasional mistake while others can learn from their 'beginner' errors. Worth reading.

Deletion tags

Do bear in mind that articles in the feed showing the trash can icon (you will need to have 'Nominated for deletion' enabled for this in your filters) may have been tagged by inexperienced or non NPR rights holders using Twinkle. They require your further verification.

Paid editing

Please be sure to look for the tell-tale signs of undisclosed paid editing. Contact the creator if appropriate, and submit the issue to WP:COIN if necessary. WMF policy requires paid editors to connect to their adverts.

Subject-specific notability guidelines' (SNG). Alternatives to deletion
  • Reviewers are requested to familiarise themselves once more with notability guidelines for organisations and companies.
  • Blank-and-Redirect is a solution anchored in policy. Please consider this alternative before PRODing or CSD. Note however, that users will often revert or usurp redirects to re-create deleted articles. Do regularly patrol the redirects in the feed.
Not English
  • A common issue: Pages not in English or poor, unattributed machine translations should not reside in main space even if they are stubs. Please ensure you are familiar with WP:NPPNE. Check in Google for the language and content, and if they do have potential, tag as required, then move to draft. Modify the text of the template as appropriate before sending it.
Tools

Regular reviewers will appreciate the most recent enhancements to the New Pages Feed and features in the Curation tool, and there are still more to come. Due to the wealth of information now displayed by ORES, reviewers are strongly encouraged to use the system now rather than Twinkle; it will also correctly populate the logs.

Stub sorting, by SD0001: A new script is available for adding/removing stub tags. See User:SD0001/StubSorter.js, It features a simple HotCat-style dynamic search field. Many of the reviewers who are using it are finding it an improvement upon other available tools.

Assessment: The script at User:Evad37/rater makes the addition of Wikiproject templates extremely easy. New page creators rarely do this. Reviewers are not obliged to make these edits but they only take a few seconds. They can use the Curation message system to let the creator know what they have done.

New Page Review newsletter November 2019

This newsletter comes a little earlier than usual because the backlog is rising again and the holidays are coming very soon.

Getting the queue to 0

There are now 817 holders of the New Page Reviewer flag! Most of you requested the user right to be able to do something about the huge backlog but it's still roughly less than 10% doing 90% of the work. Now it's time for action.
Exactly one year ago there were 'only' 3,650 unreviewed articles, now we will soon be approaching 7,000 despite the growing number of requests for the NPR user right. If each reviewer soon does only 2 reviews a day over five days, the backlog will be down to zero and the daily input can then be processed by every reviewer doing only 1 review every 2 days - that's only a few minutes work on the bus on the way to the office or to class! Let's get this over and done with in time to relax for the holidays.

New Reviewer mentorship will match newer reviewers with an experienced reviewer with a new reviewer. The other program will be an occasional peer review cohort for moderate or experienced reviewers to give feedback to each other. The first cohort will launch November 13.

  • Not only are New Page Reviewers the guardians of quality of new articles, they are also in a position to ensure that pages are being correctly tagged for deletion and maintenance and that new authors are not being bitten. This is an important feature of your work, especially while some routine tagging for deletion can still be carried out by non NPR holders and inexperienced users. Read about it at the Monitoring the system section in the tutorial. If you come across such editors doing good work, don't hesitate to encourage them to apply for NPR.
  • Do be sure to have our talk page on your watchlist. There are often items that require reviewers' special attention, such as to watch out for pages by known socks or disruptive editors, technical issues and new developments, and of course to provide advice for other reviewers.
Arbitration Committee

The annual ArbCom election will be coming up soon. All eligible users will be invited to vote. While not directly concerned with NPR, Arbcom cases often lead back to notability and deletion issues and/or actions by holders of advanced user rights.

Reviewer of the Year

This year's Reviewer of the Year is Rosguill. Having gotten the reviewer PERM in August 2018, they have been a regular reviewer of articles and redirects, been an active participant in the NPP community, and has been the driving force for the emerging NPP Source Guide that will help reviewers better evaluate sourcing and notability in many countries for which it has historically been difficult.

Special commendation again goes to Onel5969 who ends the year as one of our most prolific reviewers for the second consecutive year. Thanks also to Boleyn and JTtheOG who have been in the top 5 for the last two years as well.

Several newer editors have done a lot of work with CAPTAIN MEDUSA and DannyS712 (who has also written bots which have patrolled thousands of redirects) being new reviewers since this time last year.

Thanks to them and to everyone reading this who has participated in New Page Patrol this year.

Redirect autopatrol

A recent Request for Comment on creating a new redirect autopatrol pseduo-permission was closed early. New Page Reviewers are now able to nominate editors who have an established track record creating uncontroversial redirects. At the individual discretion of any administrator or after 24 hours and a consensus of at least 3 New Page Reviewers an editor may be added to a list of users whose redirects will be patrolled automatically by DannyS712 bot III.

Source Guide Discussion

Set to launch early in the new year is our first New Page Patrol Source Guide discussion. These discussions are designed to solicit input on sources in places and topic areas that might otherwise be harder for reviewers to evaluate. The hope is that this will allow us to improve the accuracy of our patrols for articles using these sources (and/or give us places to perform a WP:BEFORE prior to nominating for deletion). Please watch the New Page Patrol talk page for more information.

This month's refresher course

While New Page Reviewers are an experienced set of editors, we all benefit from an occasional review. This month consider refreshing yourself on Wikipedia:Notability (geographic features). Also consider how we can take the time for quality in this area. For instance, sources to verify human settlements, which are presumed notable, can often be found in seconds. This lets us avoid the (ugly) 'Needs more refs' tag.

See WP:CSD. It is not permitted to replace a speedy tag another editor has removed (unless the person who removedthe tagwas the author of the article). [[: Rechecking it, Draft:North Jutland Railways is indeed an inferior duplicate, and probably should be deleted, & I shall probably do that myself, but I or any editor has the right to remove the tag to look at it further . Speedies are often deleted a very few minutes after placing, so if there's any doubt, the only practical course is to remove the tag. DGG ( talk ) 21:51, 29 December 2019 (UTC)

@Sjö and DGG: I came here to drop a note to say that Draft:North Jutland Railways qualifies for speedy redirect which was why I closed MFD:Draft:North Jutland Railways. I was not aware another user had expressed thoughts on this draft however. If there is any objections, I'm fully willing to reconsider my close however.
