Using templates

Templates are a type of page that contain boilerplate text that is intended to be displayed on more than one page in Wikipedia.

This Tip of the day box is an example of a template (there are several versions actually), and besides being displayed here it is displayed on many userpages as well.

Template names start with the prefix "Template:" followed by the page name. The main version of the template you are reading right now is called "Template:totd".

To display a template on a page, go to the target page, click "edit", and add the template's name (with or without the prefix) surrounded by double curly brackets to the page's source text. (The text you see in the edit box when you click edit this page is called "source text", because it is a lot like programming code, which is called "source code").

Including a template on a page in this way is called "transclusion". Here's an example:

To include the Template:Philosophy topics, type this at the end of the philosophy article you wish to place it on::

{{Philosophy topics}}

To add this auto-updating template to your user page, use {{totd}}

Incomplete DYK nomination[edit]

Hello! Your submission of Template:Did you know nominations/Laura Bridgewater at the Did You Know nominations page is not complete; if you would like to continue, please link the nomination to the nominations page as described in step 3 of the nomination procedure. If you do not want to continue with the nomination, tag the nomination page with {{db-g7}}, or ask a DYK admin. Thank you. DYKHousekeepingBot (talk) 08:43, 19 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Skyes(BYU), you never did transclude this nomination, so it effectively has been missing in action for two months. If you would still like to pursue it, please finish this final step right away. If you don't plan to pursue it, please let us know here; if you do nothing, we will close it. Thank you for your response. BlueMoonset (talk) 17:16, 21 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry about that @BlueMoonset:. The article isn't long enough, and there was a lot of drama over the other BYU professor we nominated that I think it would be best if we don't pursue it. Rachel Helps (BYU) (talk) 20:18, 21 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Rachel Helps (BYU), thanks for letting me know. I've taken care of fixing the speedy deletion request (the template wasn't eligible for db-g7 because only the nominator can use it, and needs to be used without the "tl|" part (which is what causes a template name to be displayed rather than the actual template itself), so it's now a g6 instead of a g7. I imagine it will be deleted overnight. BlueMoonset (talk) 02:30, 22 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Quick reminder[edit]

Hi Skyes. Just a reminder, following the spirit of the disclosure requirement all the way through, any time you act in your paid capacity you should be sure to disclose that locally. It makes people feel weird if they happen to notice that you were paid or have a COI, so it is way better for you and everybody else if you explicitly disclose where ever you are interacting with people.

You do explicitly disclose on your userpage which is great, and you took the effort to include "BYU" in your username which is also great (and yes a huge hint... but people don't always catch the username thing). It is best to just say it simply, whenever you are interacting with a new group. So it would have been good to explicitly say it in your DKY nomination, here.

Does that make sense? Happy to discuss if not. Best regards Jytdog (talk) 22:58, 29 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Shortened footnotes[edit]

With regard to the sfn template, please note that if the source has not author, you need to use the {{harvid}} template and add it in the ref parameter, as I have done in your article. Furthermore, each source in the source list needs to be formatted with a {{citation}} template, rather than a {{cite book}}, {{cite news}} or other template. That said, it isn't required for GA to use such templates, as long as the sources used can be readily identified.

Furthermore, many editors only use the shortened footnote template for sources with multiple pages. For online sources without page numbering (and often no author specified), it is sometimes easier to use the REFNAME template.--Farang Rak Tham (Talk) 14:26, 19 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Dead link BYU[edit]

Hello Skyes,

There is a dead link from BYU-TV in the article about the temperance movement (just search the page for BYU-TV). Could you trace that report/documentary for me? You can also send it to me Wiki-email. Thanks.--Farang Rak Tham (Talk) 11:18, 15 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the Wikimail, Skyes(BYU), but i couldn't get the video running. Perhaps you could get the video from their archives or something. Otherwise, I will have to replace the link with a more accessible source. It's a fascinating subject, temperance. Just learning more about it now. Have been adding some content to the article already.--Farang Rak Tham (Talk) 23:19, 15 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Farang Rak Tham, at our university's library there is a hard copy of the DVD; however, I do believe that an online archived version of the video is no longer available. It might be better to use another source if it's necessary to include an accessible link to an online available video. Otherwise, I can check out and watch the video to confirm that the source contains the information in question about the Temperance movement. Regardless, I might watch the video and include information anyway, because the documentary is about the history of the Latter-day Saints in the British Isles and it may contain valuable information about the Temperance movement in accordance with Latter-day Saints. On scars, faces and FA's[edit]

Hello Skyes, how have you been? Good holiday? Thanks for your message. I must start by admitting that I never managed to get an article at FA yet. My last and only try is linked here. I will try again though. So I am not certain I am the person you are looking for. Furthermore, I prefer to involve myself with articles with religious or social topics. Here are a few tips with regard to the FA nomination though:

  • First of all, the article is well-written and looks very complete.
  • You might want to check whether the list in the subsection "Ties to Capone" should be integrated into prose. I think that per policy this is required. Search for the list integration policy.
  • Em-dashes can't be floating, they need to be connected to the words they're in between.
  • I think you need to add international copyright tags to the images as well, e.g. tags that apply outside the US.
  • You do not always seem to mention the exact page in the citation. I am not sure whether that is allowed for FA.
  • I am uncertain whether the distinction between Themes, Motifs and Symbols is warranted. There is overlap, and from my studies of film semiotics, I can't remember such a distinction. I could have forgotten it, though.
  • Shouldn't the Remake subsection be part of the section Related films?
  • Before nominating for FA, you might want to check whether there are any sources you have overlooked. This is generally a good thing to do. I usually use Google Scholar and Hollis, the latter being the database of Harvard University. If there are any sources you cannot access the sources online or offline, try requesting on WP:RX. I have good experiences with that.
  • You probably know this, but if this is your first FA nomination, you might have to find yourself a mentor. There is a page for that, linked on the FA nomination pages.

Good luck with it, and I will see you around!--Farang Rak Tham (Talk) 13:05, 4 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]

  • Farang Rak Tham, my vacation was very nice, but I am happy to be back on Wikipedia making more contributions! Thank you so much for your advice and willingness to look at my article and give me specific suggestions. I was not expecting that and I really appreciate it! I will take your suggestions seriously and will try to find a mentor since this is my first nomination. Thank you again and good luck with your articles! Skyes(BYU) (talk) 22:15, 6 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]
  • Farang Rak Tham, I have not yet abandoned the Temperance Movement, but have become recently engrossed in articles about film. I will return eventually...I still have the books sitting on my desk. I do have a quick question for you. I have been taking your suggestions to heart and have been implementing them in my article, but I am a little unsure about what you mean with the international copyright tags. How do I add them and in what situation do I need them? Skyes(BYU) (talk) 18:21, 7 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]
  • I can't remember why—I just remember that you need a US and international tag for images that have lapsed copyright. Could be wrong though. Copyright is not quite my forté, as I don't believe in it. I add a {{PD-old-100-1923}} tag to most images, unless there's a freedom of panorama problem or the image isn't free. Try consulting WP:CFAQ.--Farang Rak Tham (Talk) 21:42, 7 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Strangely, I've never actually seen a James Stewart film but felt myself becoming a fan purely from working on the article. I nominated it for GA, so you are welcome to complete a Good article review for the article if you please. Jimmy Stewart[edit]

Hi,

I see you've done some great work with James Stewart's article and are trying to get it to GA status (to be honest, it already looks FA-level to me!). One thing I noticed was that the text could perhaps be tightened a bit, i.e. some details could maybe be cut and some paragraphs shortened or split. I have some experience of reviewing and have brought two articles up to FA status (Marilyn Monroe and Charlie Chaplin), and I'd be happy to give some feedback if you want! In any case, excellent work! TrueHeartSusie3 (talk) 21:43, 21 October 2019 (UTC)TrueHeartSusie3[reply]

Hi, TrueHeartSusie3, I worked on the article with intentions of attempting an FA nomination. I have attempted one FA nomination for Scarface (1932 film) but it was immediately failed because I couldn't find a thorough peer reviewer and I was (and still am) unfamiliar with meticulous FA requirements including MOS and prose. I hoped that a GA review for this article would function as an initial peer review, but the response to my review has been minimal. Charlie Chaplin is a wonderful article that I have frequently used as a model article for FA standards. I am familiar with your work on Wikipedia and I considered contacting you to ask for feedback, but I have had little luck finding mentors on Wikipedia willing to help so I appreciate your reaching out. As experienced as you are with the FA review process, I would love to have as much feedback and advice as you can give me! If you would be willing to mentor me, I would appreciate it but if you don't have the time or interest, I would be happy to at least have some feedback and direction. Thank you so much for reaching out. Skyes(BYU) (talk) 15:51, 22 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]
I'd be happy to help you get this to at least GA, hopefully to FA! My schedule is a bit unpredictable, but I should definitely be able to commit to helping you with this article. In fact, I decided to start the review process in my sandbox, you can view it here and comment there. Hope it's not too confusing! Don't be discouraged by how many comments I've made, I'm just trying to be as thorough as possible. Maybe we can start working on the article, section by section, in my sandbox? I'd ask Ssven2 (he is your GA reviewer, right?) whether he can do a review now (it seems like it's been going for a while?) or whether we should maybe withdraw and try again once we've done an initial reworking? I think the latter option would be the way to go. TrueHeartSusie3 (talk) 13:01, 23 October 2019 (UTC)TrueHeartSusie3[reply]
Hi, would you mind taking one more look at the two sections in my sandbox? I could then move them to the actual article, as the content is pretty much all there, now it's gonna be mostly polishing the language and looking for better images for those two sections. You've done a marvelous job and the article is beginning to look really fantastic! I'll move onto the next sections now.TrueHeartSusie3 (talk) 22:13, 8 November 2019 (UTC)TrueHeartSusie3[reply]
@TrueHeartSusie3:, I think it looks really good! The article flows better and more logically and I love the images you added! Let me know if you need anything while reviewing the Military service section. I personally, think it's way too long (even though I've already trimmed it extensively) and could use some more trimming but I know so little about military history and the military in general, it's a section that I frequently avoid working on. Thanks again for your help, you're a superstar editor and I love your writing style. Skyes(BYU) (talk) 22:26, 8 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]
You're too kind! I've now edited the military section (in the sandbox), let me know what you think. I'm afraid military history isn't my forte either, but let's hope we find a reviewer who has an idea! The only questions I have regarding that section are:
  • Did Stewart stop doing MGM films immediately after enlisting, or did he continue to film in 1941?
  • Were the radio programmes he did scheduled by USAAF?
  • When was Stewart sent to Europe?
That's it for now :) TrueHeartSusie3 (talk) 23:33, 8 November 2019 (UTC)TrueHeartSusie3[reply]
So my plans for tonight got cancelled and since I've gotten bitten by the Wikipedia bug again, I decided to do as much of the Stewart article as I can! You can view the rest of the Career and the Personal life sections in my sandbox. I've left questions bolded. Once they are answered and if you agree with the changes I've made, I'll move the content to the article. I decided to change the 1950s career section to one chronological section, I think it's easier to cut unnecessary detail that way (no need to repeat anything) and that way it's easier to grasp the chronology of that era in Stewart's career. Anyway, let me know what you think! TrueHeartSusie3 (talk) 21:47, 9 November 2019 (UTC)TrueHeartSusie3[reply]
Thanks so much for all that you've done. I've already started addressing your comments and I will continue tomorrow. Skyes(BYU) (talk) 19:38, 11 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Couple more questions: 1.) What do you think about the way I've divided the Career-section? Do you think there would be better ways to do it? I'm thinking that it could actually maybe be more logical to go with this structure for 1950s-1991:
  • "Career renewal in westerns and thrillers (1950-1956)"; this seems to have been the peak in Stewart's post-war career and most of his films during this time were hits.
  • "Later film career" (1957—1965); There seems to have been a turn in around 1957, after which Stewart remained popular but starred in a series of flops and films that just weren't as popular as his earlier '50s films. Important exceptions are of course Anatomy of a Murder, How the West Was Won and his collaborations with Ford and Koster. I feel like Stewart's career also didn't start slowing down until mid-'60s, so grouping Liberty Valance etc. with the minor films he did in the late '60s seems odd.
  • "Television and semi-retirement" (1966-1991); I can't come up with a better title, but it seems Stewart since the late '60s he was no longer a top star (though of course still very famous) and also did not work as prolifically.
Please note here that I'm basing my observations only on the article though, so you might have better grasp of Stewart's career since you've actually done the research.
2.) The other issue is images. Have you got a plan for this? Have you uploaded images on Commons? Commons has some very high quality photos of Stewart but there are also massive gaps. I think the most pressing needs are photographs of his westerns with Mann (I mean posters or HQ still photos), and I also think we need a better image of You Can't Take It With You. A still of Sullavan and Stewart from Next Time We Love would also be great, and of course there's a need to have at least some images to illustrate Stewart's early life. TrueHeartSusie3 (talk) 14:08, 13 November 2019 (UTC)TrueHeartSusie3[reply]
I like the section titles that you added, I have no complaints really. As far as images go, I like what you've added and am curious where you found them. When I just looked up James Stewart on Commons, I didn't find anything good. I'm not sure where to find more good pictures of him. As far as his early life goes, there are A LOT of gaps. I couldn't find anything on commons and even a google search only brings up like one or two pictures with Pinterest as the source. My special collections department has some of his papers, perhaps I can see if they have anything of use that would be okay to scan and upload. Also, sorry, I only just noticed your questions about the military service section. Do you still have those questions? Skyes(BYU) (talk) 16:39, 14 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]
From our university's archives I was able to find some photos of Stewart around teen-aged as well as a lobby card for The Far Country which would satisfy the need for images of Mann's westerns. As far as an image for Next Time We Love, I haven't been able to find any in the public domain and have not been able to find any images of You Can't Take it With You that were better than the original. I have considered fair use, but I'm concerned that the rationale won't be strong enough-I haven't had much luck with fair use besides using it for movie posters and book covers on their own pages. Unless I discuss the details of what is happening in the scene displayed by the fair use image in the article, the rationale probably won't be strong enough. Is there a better location you use to search for images for your articles? Skyes(BYU) (talk) 22:59, 14 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Hi, yes please let's have another look at the military section! I've also noticed that many of the footnotes lead to websites that are dead or just unreliable, or are contemporary newspaper articles so they could be construed as original research, which is not good. If you check your books for what they say? we may also be able to shorten the section if it looks like some of the information is excessive.
As for the images, I'm no expert in them other than that one has to be careful not to break copyright laws. With Monroe, I learned that Internet Archive has a ton of film magazines from the 1910s-1960s, and that if a still or a publicity picture was published in such a magazine and the magazine is out of copyright, then we can legally use those images (or better quality versions of them). I've started having a look, and although Stewart is featured in plenty, the problem is that it's difficult to find high quality copies of the photos we could use. It's a tricky one! TrueHeartSusie3 (talk) 20:08, 15 November 2019 (UTC)TrueHeartSusie3[reply]
Also, in the military section (in addition to the questions above), could we find a better source for the Kirtland airbase than what appears to be a guidebook? Those are notoriously unreliable.TrueHeartSusie3 (talk) 20:25, 15 November 2019 (UTC)TrueHeartSusie3[reply]
I'm on it. I'll be signing off of Wikipedia for the weekend soon, but I will keep on it next week. I'm hoping to replace most sources with biography, and if I can't find a bio source for it, it's probably going to go. Skyes(BYU) (talk) 20:29, 15 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]
I just noticed that I haven't found any reliable sources that say he was ever promoted to major general. Did you find anything either? Lead, infobox, and military service section would need to be fixed accordingly if it ends up being untrue. Skyes(BYU) (talk) 20:52, 15 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Some kind soul had added images from Stewart's childhood and Princeton years to Commons! I can try to look into this major general-thing, the Air Force magazine article mentions it, not sure if it's a reliable source though? It seems to have been an honorable position. Anyway, have a lovely weekend! TrueHeartSusie3 (talk) 22:32, 15 November 2019 (UTC)TrueHeartSusie3[reply]
I think I managed to fix up the military service section, all sources are more reliable now. I removed the portion about him being a major general as well. I'm happy to see that early life pictures were found. I'm planning to add an image or two once I figure out the copyright status. I've been trying to clean up the acting style sections and beyond as well as switching the reliance some of the online sources to biography sources. Anything else I can do? Skyes(BYU) (talk) 16:01, 21 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Hello again, excellent work! I think with regards to the military section, these questions still need answers:
  • Did Stewart stop doing MGM films immediately after enlisting, or did he continue to film in 1941?
  • Were the radio programmes he did scheduled by USAAF?
  • When was Stewart sent to Europe?
Hopefully these are addressed now. Stewart tried to enlist in November 1940 and was rejected so he repealed. He continued to make films (Ziegfeld and Pot O') during the repeal process. He was done filming when he officially enlisted after the repeal in February 1941. He managed his affairs and left promptly in March to serve. His radio programs were scheduled by Air Corps, I thought I had this in there but let me know if it's not clear. I added when he was sent to England. Skyes(BYU) (talk) 22:38, 21 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]
As for Acting style, I'd like to see more academic sources here. For example, if you look at the Monroe biography, I used almost only academic sources when analysing Monroe's screen persona and significance to popular culture in that section, to give an idea of those discourses. So rather than just focusing on Stewart's method of acting (although that too is significant), we also need content that analyses why Stewart played the characters he played, and why these were popular. I'd assume there's plenty of academic writing especially on Stewart's everyman persona and his westerns. As for the Legacy, that also needs a bit more work in terms of why he is significant/remembered, currently the focus is on repeating what he did during his career and his ranking on polls. While I'm not saying you should delete that content, there needs to be more analytic material as well. Overall though, we're really close to nominating this article! TrueHeartSusie3 (talk) 19:39, 21 November 2019 (UTC)TrueHeartSusie3[reply]
I've started working on this, thanks for the suggestion. I wanted to let you know that I will be taking about a week and a half Wiki break starting today because of the Thanksgiving holiday so if you see I haven't been working on the article, it's not because I abandoned it, because I will be back! Thank you and talk to you soon :) Skyes(BYU) (talk) 20:59, 22 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Working on the legacy section, it's been challenging to find good sources, but it's a work in progress. I had someone ask if the article still needed a GA review. Were we planning on getting it through a GA review first? I'm okay either way. I just didn't know if you had a plan in mind for the nomination process. Skyes(BYU) (talk) 22:54, 3 December 2019 (UTC) EDIT: I also want to clarify that while I have been working on the legacy section in your sandbox, I have come across things in my research that better fit in the Acting Style and Screen Persona section which I have added to the article itself, because I wasn't sure whether we were still going to be working on it in your sandbox and I didn't want any of my work to be lost. If you still want to go through that section in a detailed manner, I can recopy and paste it back in the sandbox with my new additions. Skyes(BYU) (talk) 19:53, 5 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]
