Your edit was unhelpful

I have restored the information I added earlier to Chemtrail conspiracy theory but which you amended. First of all, you removed the word "many" from the paragraph. It is part of the quote taken directly from the USAF statement used as a reference. Please do not change quoted material by removing something from it. Secondly, you changed the sentence from "The Air Force has stated" to The official Air Force stance" and you left the fatuous edit summary that "not everyone in the air force agrees". So what? The USAF made a statement saying it was a hoax. That is the USAF position, regardless that there might be an airman or two who disagree. Why add "official"? Have you ever heard of the USAF or any other mil group issuing an "unofficial" press statement? Is "The Air Force has stated" too positive for you? Perhaps it suggests more authenticity than The official Air Force stance", but that's what we strive for in Wiki anyway. Or should do.

You forgot to sign your comment=P I'm sorry, I didn't notice it was a direct quote. I was trying to say that not everyone in the air force agrees. There have been pilots who have come out and said that there are chemtrails. So what is not a valid arugment^.^. A number of Air force pilots have come out and said that they have seen chemtrail equipment and so as the air force stance often changes...I thought it would be best to put official stance.Smallman12q (talk) 14:40, 8 March 2009 (UTC)

Use of rescue template

I do not think your use of a rescue template on "Plural of virus" was appropriate. There is no reason to think that additional references would meet the objections at the afd. I have therefore removed it. DGG (talk) 17:19, 8 March 2009 (UTC)

On of the nomination reasons was The entire content of this article is either trivia and speculation...speculation or speculate is defined in Wikitonary as # (intransitive) to make an inference based on inconclusive evidence; to surmise or conjecture. It is for this reason that I put the resuce template on.--Smallman12q (talk) 17:39, 8 March 2009 (UTC)
that's really stretching it. You're aware of how much the use of this template & the very existence of the project has been challenged recently. Overuse will do two things: decrease the effect, and give those opposed to it better reason to MfD it and the project. DGG (talk) 01:21, 9 March 2009 (UTC)
It's existence has been opposed since its inception. The template is for Articles on notable subjects going through AfD that: Need references. Ironically, in order to establish notability, it needs references...so its a paradox. I do understand that the template itself is currently up for deletion at Wikipedia:Templates_for_deletion#Template:Rescue, but if people WP:UCS then a lot of problems wouldn't exist. Overall, I do agree nontheless that I am stretching it...but I believe it is the right thing to do.Smallman12q (talk) 01:33, 9 March 2009 (UTC)
If the template is for notable items, why did you put one on AFC Walton? If you had done any research whatsoever on the football club, you would have realised that it had zero chance of surviving AfD. General notability of football clubs goes down to Level 10 of the English football league system - this club were at Level 17... if you use the rescue template on articles that don't have any chance of surviving at AfD, you devalue it so that people won't pay as much attention. AfD nomination of 1871 in LGBT rights

No thanks for not signing the message you left on my talk page. Returning the favor. As for this nomination, see my comments on the discussion page re Merge to decades.

I nominated based on DGG's request that there be a central discussion for them. They were being prodded...so I figured I would open an afd. Lately, people here are becoming uncharacteristically aggressive.Smallman12q (talk) 22:21, 9 March 2009 (UTC)

Hi, thanks for your comments, I added the WikiProject Abortion to the talk page, I see that other songs are in the scope of this wikiproject, so thanks again. Regards. Frcm1988 (talk) 23:13, 9 March 2009 (UTC)

No problem...good job on the article. I've looked at the article again, and noticed it lacks a see also section (you could add a link to the music portal). Have you considered adding one? Also for wikiprojects...you could add WP:WikiProject Rock music or WP:WikiProject R&B and Soul Music or WP:WikiProject Electronic music (whichever one you feel is applicable. Smallman12q (talk) 23:15, 9 March 2009 (UTC)
I was going to add the Rock music wikiproject, but the song is dance-pop, so is a subgenre of pop, and both pop and rock are derivative forms of Rock and roll. So I am not sure if that wikiproject is correct, perhaps if there is a pop or a rock ans roll wikiproject. Oh and I will started looking for articles to do a see also section. Again thanks for your help. Frcm1988 (talk) 23:55, 9 March 2009 (UTC)
Always happy to help! Cheers.--Smallman12q (talk) 23:56, 9 March 2009 (UTC)

Asking help

Smallman, cheers (forgive me if you don't understand my "stone aged English" (My native language is Portuguese, but I am living between USA and Amazon Jungle)

Every real fact, event, any observed phenomena, must have a clear, universal and scientific aproved "definition". I think this is the first goal of Wikipedia, to list those definitions.

But, every observed fact brings on a personal interpretation. Interpretations are relativistic: it is dependable of the specific observer's location at the dimensions time and space. So, the definitions of mankind as observer about a fact, can be different from the definition made by another specie/life form.

There is why I am here, at Wikipedia. Living at Amazon Jungle and having the experience of "brain wash" from the civilization millenar culture, I learned a new world vision, wich modify the interpretation of natural facts, and sometimes the proper definitions I am seeing here. So, of course, as human being and turning back to civilization, I want a new society system, a new human thought, like everyone else wants his utopy be real. Then, I think I must participate in the discussions here. And since I knew facts, events, not usually saw by another human, i think I could insert them here. o, I have no time

My problem is "time". I need working hard for to pay my bills when living in USA and I need a lot of time for putting everything into my website, I need everyday looking for new scientifc papers registered at the official scientific sites, I have a lot of images about natural phenomena for drawing and publisnhing, etc. So I have no time yet for to learn how Wikipedia works for contributors, how to edit a page, etc, most due the difficult with English language.

My question is:

How could I sending a article, text, writing in normal Office Word, or normal e-mail, for someone to insert it into Wikipedia, discussion pages, etc? Is there any solution? Thanks a lot... —Preceding unsigned comment added by TUMoNSaLC (talkcontribs) 01:35, 11 March 2009 (UTC)

Articles: Miss Dominican Republic Pageants from 1927 to 1955

You rushed to remove the tags that I placed in articles about Miss Dominican Republic pagents from the years 1927 to 1955, based on fast search you did in the Internet and placing a link that clearly states that it was copied from Wikipedia. To the best of my knowledge that is not a source, right? All information found in the internet about this subject is copied from Wikipedia and done by the same author.

Before I tag those articles, I reseached for about a months. I called the Dominican Tourist Office in Santo Domingo, and spoke to a person who has covered the beauty pageants in the past and who has access to their history. I consulted the oldest newspaper records available in Dominican Republic and there are no information nor records of Beauty pagents those years. Please be more careful before removing a tag. --Juliaaltagracia (talk) 16:01, 8 March 2009 (UTC)

Thank you both

What motivated me to participate as an editor in Wikipedia, was that I was searching information for the Miss Domininican Republic 1969, for which I was one of the contestants. I found the page, and was surprised to see that the whole article was an invention of this person. The names did not match, the date and place of the event all were made up. I changed the information and provided a reputable link in the edit summary. I also provided images and newspaper clip, to prevent this person to change back the information. I have also noted that User: MDRU08 not only invents information about pageants, but also about geographical subjects. He changes the names of Provinces. Beacuse of the large quantity of bad articles he has created it is to much work to be done. Please see MRDU08 (talk · contribs)page to see debates about his pattern of invented information.--Juliaaltagracia (talk) 01:17, 9 March 2009 (UTC)

How long it takes to delete those articles? --Juliaaltagracia (talk) 19:04, 11 March 2009 (UTC)

Pseudo realism

Hi there! Thank you for examining my delete request on Pseudo realism. You mentioned that you found references for the article on Google scholar. However the link you mention (http://scholar.google.com/scholar?hl=en&lr=&q=Pseudo+realism) if I am correct does not give any references which can be used to support claims in the article. The only reference I found was a website(http://www.pseudo-realism.com/) which in turn does not cite any references for the claims it makes. Am I missing something? Can you specifically let me know which references you obtained? They would be helpful to me in perhaps improving the article. --Belasd (talk) 00:14, 10 March 2009 (UTC)

On reviewing it again, the text you see on the page is copy/pasted from The Free Library Pseudorealism so it is probably a copyright violation... but this type of genre appears to exsist (though I'm not sure on the reliability of the sources)

See (I did a google search...followed by a google book search...followed by a google scholar search)

Again, its hard to prove as it is a fairly new topic, but the current article needs a complete rewrite to meet even basic wikipedia standards. If you feel that the article still needs to be deleted, open an AFD. Smallman12q (talk) 22:16, 10 March 2009 (UTC)

Thanks for the detailed reply. It looks like an area in need of an expert as to me there seemed to be several interpretations of the term. For now it is a copyvio and I have PRODed it. Do let me know this is not the right way to go about it as clearly you seem to have more experience with these things. --Belasd (talk) 03:06, 11 March 2009 (UTC)
Ussuallly, if a prod is contested/removed, an AFD should be opened. However, as this is a copyvio, and thus essentially a blank article, it would be easier to rewrite it from scratch. We will have to see what an admin says when the prod comes due.(I would suggest opening a WP:CSD#12 though...but a prod seems fine.)Smallman12q (talk) 00:18, 12 March 2009 (UTC)

Image source problem with Image:George obama.png

Image Copyright problem
Image Copyright problem

Thanks for uploading Image:George obama.png.

This image is a derivative work, containing an "image within an image". Examples of such images would include a photograph of a sculpture, a scan of a magazine cover, or a screenshot of a computer game or movie. In each of these cases, the rights of the creator of the original image must be considered, as well as those of the creator of the derivative work.

While the description page states who made this derivative work, it currently doesn't specify who created the original work, so the overall copyright status is unclear. If you did not create the original work depicted in this image, you will need to specify the owner of the copyright.

If you have uploaded other derivative works, consider checking that you have specified their source and tagged them, too. You can find a list of files you have uploaded by following this link. Unsourced and untagged images may be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If the image is copyrighted under a non-free license (per Wikipedia:Fair use) then the image will be deleted 48 hours after 21:58, 14 March 2009 (UTC). If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. §hepTalk 21:58, 14 March 2009 (UTC)

Re: png/svg images

Hi Smallman12q. I did switch to using svg format for a while, but I found BKChem has some bugs yet to be sorted out, i.e. any compound that has a group with numbers in like NH2 or CF3 comes out with the numbers in huge font that looks totally wrong and out of place (e.g. ). Also the letters are sometimes slightly offset and look untidy, and svgs can't be edited once made nearly so easily as pngs, so I switched back to using pngs as the svg format just doesn't seem so suitable for the kind of images I make. Other wikichemists who make lots of images like Edgar181 and Cacycle also prefer to make pngs so there doesn't seem to be universal consensus on this, even though svg may have been adopted as the official wiki standard. Meodipt (talk) 21:13, 15 March 2009 (UTC)

Well you could always convert it in inkscape, I did the conversions in about a minute. You are right that there is no consensus on this, but perhaps there should be. An svg allows the chemical compound to be scaled without loss of quality(and svgs seem very well suited for chemicals). I would also like to add that there is a category dedicated to the conversion Category:Chemical_images_that_should_be_in_SVG_format. It is still personal preference, so it is up to you. But I'm happy to see you gave it some thought=D. Nonetheless, I was wondering whether you would like me to convert your images to svg?Smallman12q (talk) 23:11, 15 March 2009 (UTC)
Oh yeah I realise there has been quite a discussion about this, and if you feel the need to convert all the hundreds of png images I've submitted into svg then feel free. I just personally prefer the look of the png files, and now days I always submit quite large images so the scaling isn't such a problem, but I appreciate some people on here like the svgs better.Meodipt (talk)

Re: Bot

I originally proposed this, but it was decided between myself and a few others (including BAG members) that since it did not lower the image thumbnail size in articles it would be a waste of bandwidth. — neuro(talk) 17:34, 16 March 2009 (UTC)

Ye, I've noticed that. The thumbnailer used here is simply aweful. It doesn't thumbnail gifs, and it adds an alpha layer to pngs...in a number of cases, the thumbnail is larger than the actual picture. Still there are a few places where thumbnails aren't used or compression would have an effect. I wanted to request that the bot go through the awards(barnstars..etc), the buttons Commons:Protected_toolbar_buttons, and icons such as Commons:Crystal_Clear(some are already compressed) and Commons:Category:Icons. Let me know what you think.Smallman12q (talk) 19:54, 16 March 2009 (UTC)
It is entirely possible to do such a thing, I could code it in no time (I'd just rip it out of the NeuRobot code). Bear in mind that that would be a commons bot though, and I don't know how they roll over there. — neuro(talk) 19:59, 16 March 2009 (UTC)
They used to have a pngbot, I don't think it would be hard getting approval. The bot would be used mainly for icons, buttons, warnings (Commons:Category:Warning_signs), and wikipedia related buttons(Commons:Category:People_icons and Commons:Category:Modified_Nuvola_icons) which aren't thumbnailed. Also, not all of the images are on commons, but most are. Do consider getting approval on commons, this would be rather beneficial.Smallman12q (talk) 20:05, 16 March 2009 (UTC)
I might have a shot. Going to bed now, I'll get back to you in a bit. If I don't, feel free to leave me a message to nudge me. — neuro(talk) 20:08, 16 March 2009 (UTC)

Replaceable fair use Image:Interactive physics test1.gif

Replaceable fair use
Replaceable fair use

Thanks for uploading Image:Interactive physics test1.gif. I noticed the description page specifies that the media is being used under a claim of fair use, but its use in Wikipedia articles fails our first non-free content criterion in that it illustrates a subject for which a freely licensed media could reasonably be found or created that provides substantially the same information. If you believe this media is not replaceable, please:

 1. Go to the media description page and edit it to add , without deleting the original replaceable fair use template.
 2. On the image discussion page, write the reason why this image is not replaceable at all.

Alternatively, you can also choose to replace this non-free media by finding freely licensed media of the same subject, requesting that the copyright holder release this (or similar) media under a free license, or by taking a picture of it yourself.

If you have uploaded other non-free media, consider checking that you have specified how these images fully satisfy our non-free content criteria. You can find a list of description pages you have edited by clicking on this link. Note that even if you follow steps 1 and 2 above, non-free media which could be replaced by freely licensed alternatives will be deleted 2 days after this notification (7 days if uploaded before 13 July 2006), per our non-free content policy. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. — neuro(talk) 02:16, 17 March 2009 (UTC)

Requesting feedback on rewritten TurnKey Linux article and open source notability guidelines

 • Hi there! You pitched into the discussion last time around and I thought you might want to pitch in this time as well. I've rewritten the article at User:Abd/TurnKey Linux and added reliable sources (the non-english sources are in the talk page). I also opened a RfC but so far no one has commented. Could you take a look and give me some feedback?
 • Also you might want to take a look at User talk:Abd/Open Source notability. I've added my two cents, and opened an RfC earlier today. So far no one else has commented. Hoping people are sufficiently interested in this to motivate them to participate in the discussion and maybe eventually reach a new consensus on this that makes a bit more sense. Cheers! George_obama.png

As per your request at the Graphics Lab, I've up'd the resolution on File:George_obama.png and sent it through 3 filters to hide the artifacts from the blow up. If the new image is seen at the regular resolution (before being blown up) it should look the same as before. Revert if you don't like the changes. If you'd really like, I can do some high res reconstructing which would take a while but I'll be able to attain a higher quality-- penubag  (talk) 01:51, 21 March 2009 (UTC)

Ward Allen

Hi Smallman12q,

I would like some help, I am attempting to add a .pdf document as a reference. I am having trouble understanding how to approach the wikipedia licensing scheme. The document does not have a copyright but I still contacted them to get permission so I could satisfy your information requirements and have included it in the upload info (specific contact info which is also in the doc, its a public relations piece). What am I missing? My second question is if I click on the actual file in "my uploads" or anywhere else it doesn't seem to open as a .pdf anyway...is there something special I need for this to work?

Thank you for your guidance in advance

Ward.Allen (talk) 21:33, 26 March 2009 (UTC)

Hi. Unfortunately, I'm not really overly familiar with the copyright/licensing scheme that Wikipedia has, and as such am afraid to provide an answer as it may not be entirely correct. However, posting your question at Wikipedia:Media_copyright_questions would probably get you a more thorough and definitive answer than what I am able to provide. I believe that in order to meet legal requirements, an email would need to be sent...see Wikipedia:OTRS, but do post the question at Wikipedia:Media_copyright_questions, you'll get a more thorough response. If it turns out that the verifiability is being challenged, post at WP:RSN.
File:Via Christi Wichita Health Network.pdf

As for the opening up automatically, most wikipedia media files do not open automatically...instead they are displayed as thumbnails or links...which people then follow and click to open. Generally, files used for referencing aren't uploaded(unless they have been previously or are going to be deleted such as a bankrupt company). As you've become interested in wikipedia, I suggest that you seek "adoption" through the WP:Adopt-a-user program. I hope I've been able to help.Smallman12q (talk) 23:47, 26 March 2009 (UTC)

A new userbox can be added to your page, and if you know of a editor contributing to accounting articles, a welcoming template can be used to invite the editor to join the task force. If you haven't already, consider watchlisting the main discussion page. There is currently a discussion about adding a template to some main accounting topics that would benefit from input by other editors. Feel free to leave feedback on the discussion page for further improving these new features. Happy editing! --Nehrams2020 (talk) 07:36, 14 April 2009 (UTC)

Economics articles

Unresolved

Hi. I notice you've created a lot of economics stubs, all with the same text listed as a reference, and all (or lots) in Category:Economics. My feeling is that the reference doesn't add much, in the absence of a more specific cite. But before I go and delete a lot of them, I thought I'd raise the topic with you, and see if you had a strong reason for doing it this way. Also, do you know if there is a global method for editing/deleting refs like this?JQ (talk) 04:19, 26 April 2009 (UTC)

The reference is an economics textbook I used a while back. I don't understand what you mean by "the reference doesn't add much"? I got the terms from the book and hence I have cited it. I do believe this qualifies for WP:RS. Why would you want to delete a verifiable reference?(Yes there is a way using the Wikipedia:AutoWikiBrowser.)Smallman12q (talk) 20:15, 27 April 2009 (UTC)

File Copyright problem
File Copyright problem

Thanks for uploading File:Document 8.png. I noticed that the file's description page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you did not create this file yourself, you will need to specify the owner of the copyright. If you obtained it from a website, then a link to the website from which it was taken, together with a restatement of that website's terms of use of its content, is usually sufficient information. However, if the copyright holder is different from the website's publisher, their copyright should also be acknowledged.

If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have specified their source and tagged them, too. You can find a list of files you have uploaded by following this link. Unsourced and untagged images may be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If the image is copyrighted under a non-free license (per Wikipedia:Fair use) then the image will be deleted 48 hours after 06:03, 27 April 2009 (UTC). If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Radiant chains (talk) 06:03, 27 April 2009 (UTC)

Page blanked by author

Resolved
 – Smallman12q (talk) 20:26, 5 May 2009 (UTC)

Hi. Though page blanking is usually vandalism and needs to be reverted, it is worth looking first at the page history, because quite often the author has blanked his own page, as with Jhaaantu just now. In those cases the best thing is to tag it db-author. It can be confusing for an author who realises his page is inappropriate and blanks it, if his page is at once restored and he is accused of vandalism for the blanking and told it was unconstructive. Regards, JohnCD (talk) 21:08, 4 May 2009 (UTC)

I usually catch that. I saw you as the last editor and when I saw the removal of content I assumed it was a vandal. I will request that Huggle show the page creator. Thanks for letting me know!Smallman12q (talk) 21:11, 4 May 2009 (UTC)

Welcome to ARS!

Here to help articles tagged for rescue!

Hi, Smallman12q, welcome to the Article Rescue Squadron! We are a growing community of Wikipedia editors dedicated to identifying and rescuing articles that have been tagged for deletion. Every day hundreds of articles are deleted, many rightfully so. But many concern notable subjects and are poorly written, ergo fixable and should not be deleted. We try to help these articles quickly improve and address the concerns of why they are proposed for deletion. This covers a lot of ground and your help is appreciated!

If you have any questions, feel free to ask on the talk page, and we will be happy to help you.

Amazon links

See WP:ELNO, point 15. Do try an ISBN link instead. We don't link directly to amazon because they sell a product, and we're not in the business of sending our readers to buy products; neither should we appear to favor them over other vendors. - Biruitorul Talk 04:42, 12 May 2009 (UTC)

Perhaps. Anyway, I think the "url" section is typically for Google Books or, if the book is available free online, for that sort of site. - Biruitorul Talk 14:16, 12 May 2009 (UTC)
I assumed that a link was better than no link. Is there a particular policy or guideline that has this listed out so that I would be able to point it out to others?Smallman12q (talk) 19:31, 12 May 2009 (UTC)
Well, isn't WP:ELNO, point 15 pretty clear? There's more on this at various points in the Wikipedia talk:External links, but I think "instead of linking to a commercial bookstore site..." is rather emphatic. If you're not convinced, do ask for clarification on that talk page. - Biruitorul Talk 19:54, 12 May 2009 (UTC)
It says WP:ELNO says Links to sites already linked through Wikipedia sourcing tools so I assumed we could link in the references tools. Perhaps something about this should be added to WP:Reference? I'm not trying to be rude, I'm only trying to understand where you're coming from as you're the first Wikipedian to point this out to me. Thank you again for your speedy responses.Smallman12q (talk) 20:03, 12 May 2009 (UTC)
Just in case I'm misleading you, which I don't want to do, I've asked at Wikipedia talk:External links for outside input. Hopefully this can be clarified. - Biruitorul Talk 20:56, 12 May 2009 (UTC)
My understanding is that the main issue with linking directly to the book at a particular site is that it gives preference to that site for anyone who may be interested in purchasing the item being referenced. By using the ISBN number, it improves impartiality and neutrality in the commercial linking, as the user then receives a link to a list of multiple sites from which the book may be available. --- Barek (talkcontribs) - 21:01, 12 May 2009 (UTC)
I too support the belief that as a non-profit organization, Wikipedia should not be giving preference to certain sites over others. However, as with Wikipedia articles, I generally like to see reliable sources in the form of a policy, guideline, or a discussion where a consensus has been reached. If one cannot be found, perhaps the current policies/guidelines should be amended.Smallman12q (talk) 21:30, 12 May 2009 (UTC)
I agree with Biruitorul that WP:ELNO #15 addresses this. I suppose it's a question of how you define and distinguish "tools". To me, a template is not a tool - so a referencing template would not be a tool; instead, I view tools as items such as the ones found in Wikipedia's "special pages" such as Special:BookSources, or external applications such as http://tools.wikimedia.pl/~holek/isbn.php . --- Barek (talkcontribs) - 21:52, 12 May 2009 (UTC)

Links to sites already linked through Wikipedia sourcing tools. For example, instead of linking to a commercial bookstore site, consider the "ISBN" linking format, which gives readers an opportunity to search a wide variety of free and non-free book sources. Wikipedia:Map sources can be linked by using geographical coordinates.

— WP:ELNO

I interpret sourcing tools as sourcing templates such as cite book and other citation/reference templates. The other portion states :Links to sites already linked through. What is your interpretation of already linked through? (I'm just trying to gather a thorough consensus=D)Smallman12q (talk) 22:03, 12 May 2009 (UTC)

Addition-It also say For example, instead of linking to a commercial bookstore site, consider the "ISBN" linking format, but it doesn't say anything about doing both. I've always thought that as much info in a reference as possible is good. Please comment.Smallman12q (talk) 22:05, 12 May 2009 (UTC)
At this point, I suppose it would be more productive to move this conversation to WT:EL, so that the discussion has better visibility to help build a concensus. But on the specific wording, I would view the sourcing tool as Special:BookSources, and referencing templates as mearly convenience methods to link to the tool. I also interpret "already linked through" to mean any source which can be potentially linked via the sourcing tool in the special pages (ie: older books that pre-date the ISBN numbers would not be linkable through the sourcing tool). Note for clarification: by using an ISBN number, a link is automatically created that routes through the Special:BookSources tool. --- Barek (talkcontribs) - 22:10, 12 May 2009 (UTC)
Comment: I just realized that I had made some assumptions when I read the discussion prior to adding my comments ... but I haven't viewed the specific issue which triggered this discussion. Could you point me to the article and edits involved? The reason I ask ... WP:ELNO is specific to the external links section - but I'm not sure if the discussion above was trully related to ELs or if it was actually related to inline references. While I believe that the same rules should apply if the book were used as a reference, I am not aware of anything in WP:RS, WP:CITE, or even WP:V which would explicitly support this position. --- Barek (talkcontribs) - 22:22, 12 May 2009 (UTC)
It's not any particular article, just that I've generally included amazon and barnes &noble links in addition to ISBNS in various cite book ciations/references. I'm mainly seeking clarification as to whether adding a link to amazon, google, B &N, and other sites is appropriate and have come to notice that an explicit policy does not exsist.Smallman12q (talk) 22:26, 12 May 2009 (UTC)

I wouldn't worry about it. I did think it was a bit strange when I saw the cite to the same book being added repeatedly, and I wondered if I should mention it at that time, but decided against it, as I didn't want you to feel that your work was unappreciated, and it didn't seem like such a big deal. I would personally prefer a more well known and readily available book, and I think it's better if you reference to the relevant chapter (which you do in many cases), but like I said, don't worry about it. The nice thing about Wikipedia is, if someone thinks it needs fixing, it's up to that someone to fix it. ;-) LK (talk) 15:18, 23 May 2009 (UTC)

ThankSpam

My RfA

Thank you for participating in my "RecFA", which passed with a final tally of 153/39/22. There were issues raised regarding my adminship that I intend to cogitate upon, but I am grateful for the very many supportive comments I received and for the efforts of certain editors (Ceoil, Noroton and Lar especially) in responding to some issues. I wish to note how humbled I was when I read Buster7's support comment, although a fair majority gave me great pleasure. I would also note those whose opposes or neutral were based in process concerns and who otherwise commented kindly in regard to my record.
I recognise that the process itself was unusual, and the format was generally considered questionable - and I accept that I was mistaken in my perception of how it would be received - but I am particularly grateful for those whose opposes and neutrals were based in perceptions of how I was not performing to the standards expected of an administrator. As much as the support I received, those comments are hopefully going to allow me to be a better contributor to the project. Thank you. Very much. LessHeard vanU (talk) 14:11, 24 May 2009 (UTC)

MY DYK nomination

Hi Smallman12q. Thank you for reviewing my DYK nomination Melhus church. I do not think that declining of the article was a legitimate thing to do. I've changed the hook and the name of the article to address the subject better. May I please ask you, if I could resubmit the article for DYK with a new name? Do I have any other options to fight this decline? Thank you for your time.--Mbz1 (talk) 14:50, 30 May 2009 (UTC)

I do agree that it should qualify for DYK. The concern, as how I see it, is that the section "Controversy of the Petter Dass portrait" is longer than the actual history section. See if you can make the history a few sentences longer, but it should qualify. Not to discredit them, but orland and finnwiki are not regulars at DYK, but they are editors who do raise a valid point (but it is one that should not prevent a successful DYK). Smallman12q (talk) 20:32, 30 May 2009 (UTC)
Thanks for the response. I'd like to let you know that I am very sorry for my outburst and nominating the article to be deleted. As you know I got very upset by Orland accusations in bias and POV, but of course being upset was not good enough reason to cross out work of other people, who helped in writing of the article. May I please asure that there was absolutely no bias and/or POV on my part in the writing of this article. It was very hard for me to find any information on the subject, and the most information I found was about the portrait. Today I was able to find one more interesting thing from the history of the church. I added this info and reference to it to the article. I'm going to renominate the article for DYK once again. The time is still allows me to do it. It is not for me, but for the article and for other people, who helped. Thanks.--Mbz1 (talk) 18:25, 31 May 2009 (UTC)
No worries, it happens.(Orland was indeed a bit overly aggressive). One thing to remember is that on wikipedia (unlike in bureaucratic courts), the rules can be bent and even ignored (WP:IAR). In addition, you should also remember that whatever you do can be undone, so if you make a mistake, you should be aware that it can always be corrected.Smallman12q (talk) 18:31, 31 May 2009 (UTC)
Have you searched google books for sources?Smallman12q (talk) 18:55, 31 May 2009 (UTC)
Thank you for being so kind for me! I did search everything I guess. Sometimes the source was too big to translate. I of course will continue to work on the article. In any case it is a start class article that is supposed to be improved and extended. Surely many users includig Orland, who live in Norway have much more recources availabale to them than I do. In any case I believe that the article I and others author created is better than the one on Norwegian Wikipedia even in the way it is now. Thank you once again for saving the article from me :) --Mbz1 (talk) 19:06, 31 May 2009 (UTC)

DYKs

I have no strong objections to nominations, per say, but I am still doing a lot of work on them.
I was just going to do "Did you knows" a bit later. Few if any of these articles, for example, have even a lead written. --Carlaude talk 05:49, 2 June 2009 (UTC)
I have never done a "DYK" before. I see now the 5-day limit-- I wish I had known before.
Please nominate and write a lead for some of these if you are able. I would do it myself, but I am about to do out of town for a day.
By the way, I added hunks of text from various articles to all the 20 early this morning. If this makes some article confusing and will hurt the odds of getting a DYK please just comment it out, <!-- Comment -->, but I would look on a case by case basis. I will add it in later.
If you have partiular requests or questions, I will try to check back in later today.--Carlaude talk 11:54, 2 June 2009 (UTC)

Cheese Store of Beverly Hills for DYK

Hi, I've never written a message on Wikipedia before, so I hope I'm doing this correctly. The notable customers list has been removed, and I think that's good. I had added it because I had seen it on entries for similar Los Angeles stores, but it does seem extremely gratuitous. Do you have any recommendations on how I could get the other flags off the page, so that it reads like a regular entry? I'd like to make it as good as possible. I love cheese!

Thank you, Jenna StJenna (talk) 23:30, 1 June 2009 (UTC)

Cheese=D. The article doesn't seem to bad as it is, especially for your first article contribution. Sometimes editors go a little overboard in tagging articles so its nothing to get worried about. I will clean it up tomorrow when I have a bit more time. Cheers!Smallman12q (talk) 01:31, 2 June 2009 (UTC)
Unfortunately, due to certain business, I won't be on this week, however, you can greatly improve the article by expanding it from the sources listed at in the media at their website. Smallman12q (talk) 22:15, 2 June 2009 (UTC)

This is an automated message from CorenSearchBot. I have performed a web search with the contents of Life course theory, and it appears to include a substantial copy of http://family.jrank.org/pages/1074/Life-Course-Theory.html. For legal reasons, we cannot accept copyrighted text or images borrowed from other web sites or printed material; such additions will be deleted. You may use external websites as a source of information, but not as a source of sentences. See our copyright policy for further details.

This message was placed automatically, and it is possible that the bot is confused and found similarity where none actually exists. If that is the case, you can remove the tag from the article and it would be appreciated if you could drop a note on the maintainer's talk page. CorenSearchBot (talk) 16:51, 29 July 2009 (UTC)

A tag has been placed on Life course theory requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section G12 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the article appears to be a blatant copyright infringement. For legal reasons, we cannot accept copyrighted text or images borrowed from other web sites or printed material, and as a consequence, your addition will most likely be deleted. You may use external websites as a source of information, but not as a source of sentences. This part is crucial: say it in your own words.

If the external website belongs to you, and you want to allow Wikipedia to use the text — which means allowing other people to modify it — then you must verify that externally by one of the processes explained at Wikipedia:Donating copyrighted materials. If you are not the owner of the external website but have permission from that owner, see Wikipedia:Requesting copyright permission. You might want to look at Wikipedia's policies and guidelines for more details, or ask a question here.

If you think that this notice was placed here in error, you may contest the deletion by adding hangon to the top of the page that has been nominated for deletion (just below the existing speedy deletion or "db" tag), coupled with adding a note on the talk page explaining your position, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the page meets the criterion it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the page that would render it more in conformance with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. Note

I appreciate your willingness to help out a new user User:RoyDickson, but suggested that I am "making wikiwar" or that there is a "conflict" going on does not really help things. If you had looked at the history, you would see that I have also left this user messages intending to help him; he tends to ignore these messages for weeks at a time and then show up at my talk page with some shouting about how I deleted his work. There is no "conflict" here, just a user who refuses to communicate. Again, I welcome your offer to help new users, but please don't try to undermine other users by acting as if you're riding in on a white horse and rescuing newbies from us. I'm sure you didn't intend to do anything like that; I just wanted to leave you a note now so that you don't accidentally offend anyone in the future with messages like this. Thanks, rʨanaɢ talk/contribs 20:35, 4 August 2009 (UTC)

I hope that you didn't entertain the idea that I am riding in on a white horse to save a newbie from an admin. Rather, I've found that users who have a history of miscomunication with another user tend to get hostile (from frustration). I'm merely offering to help; I have no intention of undermining anyone (remember:The government hates competition=D) I'm here to promote wikilove over wikiwar. I'm not implying that there was/is/or will be a conflict. I am stating that there is a problem(from what is immaterial) and I wish to assist in resolving this problem.Smallman12q (talk) 20:49, 4 August 2009 (UTC)

ALASKA AVIATION HISTORY

I believe you have read an exchange I have had with RJANAG & if I read your message correctly you indicated you could work with me to get me started adding a lot of useful info on Alaska Aviation History. Please let me know how to proceed. I would really like to accomplish this. Thank you in advance. RoyDickson (talk) 00:31, 5 August 2009 (UTC)

That is correct. I would like like to work with you. To start, why don't you make a "userfied" copy of the articles you are interested in editing in your user namespace. To do this, simply start a new page at User:RoyDickson/<title of article>. See WP:USERFY for more info.
I've userfied the history of aviation in Alaska at User:RoyDickson/History of Aviation in Alaska. (You already have a page at User:RoyDickson/Barnhill & McGee Airways)
By putting a copy of the articles in your namespace, I can assure you they won't be deleted, and you will be free to work upon them until you are ready to copy over the changes into the article namespace.
I will help you work on the articles in namespace, and when ready, we'll copy them over. If you have any questions, feel free to ask. (I don't know if you live in alaska, but I live on the east coast so there may be a time gap as to when I answer.)
One last thing. On Wikipedia, articles are kept based on WP:NOTABILITY and WP:RELIABLE SOURCES. Meet those two criteria and the article will be kept. Cheers!Smallman12q (talk) 14:29, 5 August 2009 (UTC)
And User:RoyDickson/Harvey Barnhill for the other one. Please do not move it to article space, though, until Smallman12q or another editor has checked it to make sure it meets the requirements. (The page is move-protected, so it can't be moved into article space until I get a message from Smallman12q saying it's ready.) rʨanaɢ talk/contribs 16:53, 5 August 2009 (UTC)
To start with, we will work in userspace until the article becomes of at least C quality, then we shall move into article namespace.Smallman12q (talk) 17:06, 5 August 2009 (UTC)
The quality of the article is not the problem, the problem is notability. The article can be beautifully written, but unless it addresses the notability concerns raised it will probably end up being deleted again. It should not be restored to article space until it is ready to survive an AFD (if it ever is). rʨanaɢ talk/contribs 20:16, 5 August 2009 (UTC)

Thank you for your offer of HELP!

Thanks for offering to give me some help in contributing articles. As you can probably tell I am new to Wikipedia. I have retrieved and printed all the documentation on creating & submitting articles, on style, etc. & have studied them. But, they are complex. So, I am trying to fit in, but have not had a good experience so far! But hopefully this will all work out. I am trying to enrich the category ALASKA AVIATION HISTORY. I have done a lot of research and have well documented information on over 100 of the bush pilots from the pioneer era 1920-1940 that started it all, as well as information on 25 or more of the original airlines in Alaska that either became part of today's Alaska Airlines, or became part of Delta Airlines, or went out of business. All important information on Alaska Aviation History which is such an important part of Alaska History. I edited the PILOTS list in Alaska Aviation History by adding birth & death dates where they were missing in the original list. Then I added about 95 additional names to the list. All of these pilot's names came from the Aviation Committee of the 1967 Alaska Centennial publications. This expanded list lasted for about a week, but then the PILOTS list was replaced by a NOTABLE PILOTS list which eliminated several names from the original list and eliminated all of my additions. In one of the exchanges with Rjanag he mentioned the name of a contributor who made these changes, but I cannot seem to retrieve the contributors name so I can contact & begin a discussion that will hopefully benefit the subject. I have asked Rjanag to re-post the contact, and this will be a new starting point for me. Then I would like to be in touch with you as I attempt to generate some new articles on pilots and airlines. Thank you for your offer of assistance. RoyDickson (talk) 20:28, 5 August 2009 (UTC)

I welcome you to wikipedia, and am happy to see that you have edited in good faith. I have made a copy of the article(categories are different from article's=PWP:Article v WP:Category) History of aviation in Alaska to your userspace at User:RoyDickson/History of Aviation in Alaska. Please feel free to make whatever edits you need to your userspace version at User:RoyDickson/History of Aviation in Alaska. When you are done expanding/editing the article, I will copy the article from your userspace into the main article namespace(think of it as a draft being moved to a final copy=D).
I understand that you have done a bit of research and have well documented information. Once you add in the pilots and other info, you must add in the sources which you have used. I'm not quite sure as to which contact you are referring to, but you can see who has previously edited a page by going to the top of your screen and selecting the "history" tab.
Lastly, I'd like to offer to "adopt" you. Adoption is a more formal method of allowing me to assist you, but is by no means necessary. Please see Wikipedia:Adopt-a-User for more information and let me know if you are interested.Smallman12q (talk) 03:05, 6 August 2009 (UTC)

Adoption, History of Aviation in Alaska

Thank you for your offer of adoption. I have read the adoption article & it sounds like what I need! Also thanx for copying the Talk:History of Aviation in Alaska that I can use as a draft version. I ask for your suggestions: - Given that I have about 100 Bush Pilot names to add with plans to post biographies for all of them,

 • Should I add the entire list in the beginning, then begin adding the biographies one at a time?
 • or, would it be better to add one pilot name to the list & add the related biography for that pilot before continuing to another pilot?

Two of my articles have survived so far - I would appreciate your reviewing them for suggested improvements: - PILOTS category - LINIOUS McGEE (1897-1968) - DEFUNCT AIRLINES category - BARNHILL & McGEE AIRWAYS All suggestions welcome. note new signature Old33 (talk) 16:25, 6 August 2009 (UTC)

I see you have chosen a different signature...should I call you old33 or roy dickson(or just roy)? I have adopted you...as you will notice the new userbox on your userpage. Please note, that while those two articles are in the main article space, you should create new articles in your userspace at User:RoyDickson/<bush pilot>. I would prefer you list the 100 Bush pilot names first(so that I too can look them up) and then we can add articles one by one=D. Please remember to create this list in userspace, and not article mainspace. I'm busy right now, but I will review those two articles within the next day or so. Let me know if you have any further questions. Cheers. Smallman12q (talk) 19:29, 6 August 2009 (UTC)
@RoyDickson: Given that other editors already chose to remove the names, adding one pilot at a time is the only appropriate way to proceed. If you want to re-open the discussion, send messages to User:Beeblebrox and User:Fuzbaby alerting them of your message at Talk:History_of_aviation_in_Alaska#Long_list_of_pilots and asking for comment. rʨanaɢ talk/contribs 19:29, 6 August 2009 (UTC)
Given that this addition will take place in userspace(on a "draft" version), it shouldn't matter whether all the pilots are added at once, or only one at a time. Let me know if I'm wrong.Smallman12q (talk) 19:33, 6 August 2009 (UTC)
I was only referring to editing of the actual article. Making a list in userspace is fine; the list just should not be restored to the real article without discussion. rʨanaɢ talk/contribs 19:35, 6 August 2009 (UTC)
I'll be working with Roy to ensure that all content added to mainspace will conform to the Wikipedia:Manual of Style. Prior to adding to mainspace, we will be working in userspace to avoid violating any policy/guideline. @RoyDickson, please remember to make copies of the articles you wish to edit in your userspace. Also, you may make a full list of the pilots, or add them one at a time, up to you, but make sure you do it in userspace. Thanks.Smallman12q (talk) 19:47, 6 August 2009 (UTC)

You learn best from experience and practice=D. You probably noticed how the inline references were used. There are tools that assist in making these references. Go to "my preferences" (located at the top of your screen, select the "gadgets" tab, and check off " refTools". Save your preferences, and next time you go to edit, you will see a little "cite" button. I hope you continue to contribute to wikipedia. If you have any questions, feel free to ask.Smallman12q (talk) 22:07, 9 August 2009 (UTC)

Working within the USER:ROYDICKSON/HISTORY OF AVIATION IN ALASKA working space, I added Harvey W. Barnhill (ca1902 - late1950s) to the PILOTS list with a link, and redirected the link to your rewritten Barnhill & McGee Airways article. This seems to work OK. Perhaps we should do the same thing with Linious McGee linked entry in the PILOTS list, that is redirect the link to the Barnhill & McGee Airways article and delete the Linious McGee article which really doesn't add much to the info on him that is in the Barnhill & McGee Airways article. What do you think? Old33 (talk) 17:35, 10 August 2009 (UTC)

Before adding people to the list, they should be notable. I don't see what Harvey W. Barnhill did? McGee founded what was to be Alaska Airlines. Also, lists are generally kept seperate, so I've created a list at User:RoyDickson/Notable Alaskan aviators. Have a look at WP:NLIST to determine whether people should listed.Smallman12q (talk) 17:57, 10 August 2009 (UTC)

What is the difference between NOTABLE PILOTS list & NOTABLE ALASKAN AVIATORS list? Are you thinking we need two lists? If two lists, what is the distinction between them? Before all this started there was only a PILOTS list. Old33 (talk) 19:23, 10 August 2009 (UTC)

I should have explained better. You see, the topic HISTORY OF AVIATION IN ALASKA is an article not a list. On wikipedia, extended lists(say of more than 5-10 items) generally receive their own page(such as List_of_chemical_engineering_societies...rather than listing out all the chemical societies on the chemistry page, it gets its own page).Smallman12q (talk) 19:36, 10 August 2009 (UTC)

Hi Smallman12q...I replaced my original photo with a current, cleaned-up photo to the file history/jpg page. Here is the link: http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/5/54/Jay_Jennings-Writer-Director-Producer-Musician-Author.jpg. The current photo added just fine to the Jay Jennings article page too. Yet when I checked the file history/jpg page, Wikipedia inexplicably added both the old photo and new photo to the file history/jpg section 4 times (as reverted) making the file history look ridiculous and cluttered with 4 meaningless reverts. I tried to remove the other 4 revert columns (which I did not add), but do not know how. Do you know how to do this? Once again, I did not add the 4 extra reverted photos, I replaced my original photo just once. These are the 4 links to the extra photos that serve no purpose

Timemachine1967 (talk) 20:27, 11 August 2009 (UTC)Thank you.

That is indeed odd. Presumably its a glitch of some sort, but nothing to really worry about. (I've seen it happen randomly before.) If it happens again, let me know, but otherwise, don't worry about it. Smallman12q (talk) 20:48, 11 August 2009 (UTC)

Yes, but can you fix the file summary so it only reflects the current photo? Cosmetically, it looks very lame and cluttered. I checked out a dozen or so other director's file summary's and none of them look like that. They have a nice, clean-looking file summary of one or two photos. Also, down the road, if I decide to add more photos, the file summary will look even MORE cluttered, simply because the glitch added 4 unneccesary photos that should've never been there in the first place. If there are 4 glitch-made photo additions to the file summary that serve no purpose, wouldn't logic dictate that they should be removed so the file summary reflects the correct current amount of photos, which is 1? Timemachine1967 (talk) 20:57, 11 August 2009 (UTC)

Personally, I don't have the rights to do that. I suggest you simply reupload the File:Jay Jennings-Writer-Director-Producer-Musician-Author.jpg as File:Jay Jennings-Writer-Director-Producer-Musician-Author fixed.jpg. (The simplest solution is to upload it under a different name.)Smallman12q (talk) 21:32, 11 August 2009 (UTC)

History of Aviation in Alaska (cont'd)

Your latest explanation of lists, etc leaves me a bit confused. The structure we are working in is: The main article is History of Alaska; Part 4 is "20th Century" which lists its Main article as Alaska Territory (1912-1959). There is a "See Also" at the end of the "20th Century" index See Also - History of Aviation in Alaska, which is an article classified as a stub. This article contains a short 2 sentence intro & NOTABLE PILOTS (a list?) with 5 entries, 4 of which are linked to articles, then a See Also - List of Airlines in Alaska. This list of airlines contains several groupings. Is it your thinking that this all needs to be completely restructured in some way? If so, should it be restructured before attempting to add articles or lists? Sorry to be so confused! Old33 (talk) 16:58, 12 August 2009 (UTC)

The easiest way to explain it is to have a look at History_of_Alaska. Here you will see that the majority of the article is text, not a list. What I'm saying is that there should be a separate article(a list) for the notable pilots of Alaska. Essentially, two articles: History of aviation in Alaska and List of notable Alaskan aviators. The History of aviation in Alaska would have a short list containing the most notable of these notable Alaskan aviators, whereas the List of notable Alaskan aviators would specifically list out all of the notable Alaskan aviators. Let me know if you are still confused.Smallman12q (talk) 22:00, 12 August 2009 (UTC)

I got the draft up and running at User:Themfromspace/External links noticeboard. Let me know what you think! ThemFromSpace 23:37, 24 August 2009 (UTC)

Draft article McGee Airways etc.

Working in User:RoyDickson/History of Aviation in Alaska - I made a couple of draft changes/additions that I hope you can review & correct / comment:

 1. I eliminated the section NOTABLE PILOTS & created a see also article ALASKAN HALL OF FAME PILOTS. It seemed to me this would be a way to eliminate a lot of different opinions on who is notable & who isn't.
 2. I added a link to a new article which will be a list of ALASKAN AVIATORS - I haven't started populating the list yet but will start soon. I assume this list could contain some names that have a lower notability threshold.
 3. I eliminated the redirect of MCGEE AIRWAYS to ALASKA AIRLINES and added a new article on McGee Airways. However, my reference citations are a mess with a host of errors. I can't seem to identify the problems and studying help pages as well as your example of BARNHILL & MCGEE AIRLINES doesn't seem to help me identify my flaws.

I hope you can straighten me out! Old33 (talk) 19:12, 24 August 2009 (UTC)

Here are some suggestions for your User:RoyDickson/History of Aviation in Alaska.
 • Write about the first airports.
 • Add pictures of bush planes...airports..etc.
 • Write about how Alaska has a unique(frozen) climate and how that affects aviation there.
 • A description of the aviation sector back then and today.
 • A description about any notable aviation organizations...a brief description of aviation today in alaska.

(While it won't be very long...it should suffice).

Have a look at History of aviation in Pittsburgh.

In addition, another related article you could create would be a timeline: User:RoyDickson/Timeline of Aviation in Alaska (see Timeline of Zen Buddhism in the United States as an example).Smallman12q (talk) 19:27, 24 August 2009 (UTC)

The reason the references didn't work, Roy, is that you were using smart quotes “ ” instead of straight quotes " ". If your text editor is adding these, try writing the article using a text-only program (for example, Notepad, rather than Microsoft Word or whatever you are using) or writing it on Wikipedia itself, in a user page.
As for sources... this one is not a reliable source and should be removed, and new sources need to be found for the information taken from it. rʨanaɢ talk/contribs 20:50, 24 August 2009 (UTC)
Also, make sure you read the guidelines on linking before writing more articles with too many links. This is the second time that I have had to go through one of your articles and clean up a lot of extraneous links [2]. rʨanaɢ talk/contribs 20:52, 24 August 2009 (UTC)
Thanks for the continued assistance Rjang. I appreciate you going out of your way(especially as an admin...hard to find good admins these days) to help out Old33. Cheers!Smallman12q (talk) 01:56, 27 August 2009 (UTC)

Revised version of Linious Mac McGee

I revised the Linious "Mac" McGee article (that I had created earlier) adding references, etc. When you have time would you please review it to see if it passes muster. Old33 (talk) 19:36, 26 August 2009 (UTC)

I have to admit...it's pretty good.=D (You even used the citation templates properly=D). I suggest that you add an infobox...Infobox Person...(if you need help with the infobox, let me know, but I think you'll be able to manage=D). While you delve into his carreer life quite well, you don't really mention anything about his family(did he have one?). Consider adding a few pictures of his companies(pictures always spice up an article). Otherwise it looks pretty good for one of your first articles..Smallman12q (talk) 02:04, 27 August 2009 (UTC)

DYK for McGee Airways

Updated DYK query On August 28, 2009, Did you know? was updated with a fact from the article McGee Airways, which you recently nominated. You are welcome to check how many hits your article got while on the front page (here's how) and add it to DYKSTATS if it got over 5,000. If you know of another interesting fact from a recently created article, then please suggest it on the Did you know? talk page.

DYK McGee Airways

Thank you so much for nominating my article for the main page. That is very encouraging. I have uploaded some historic pictures & am currently trying to figure out how best to add them to the article. Thanks again for all your help (and patience!) Old33 (talk) 01:40, 29 August 2009 (UTC)

=D. The article recieved 1.1k views according to page view statistics. Congrats on your first DYK. Pictures always help...just make sure that they are either in public domain(or one of those "free" licenses), or you have permission to upload them. Cheers.Smallman12q (talk) 23:16, 29 August 2009 (UTC)

Picture Addition to Article

I added 2 pics to the McGee Airways article. I would appreciate any comments or suggestions when you have time to review.Old33 (talk) 17:56, 30 August 2009 (UTC)

I personally don't like the use of the multipleimages template, it's generally used to provide contrast, or varying perspectives. (It is ultimately up to the editor though=P). I've rearranged them to my personal preference. Generally, I usually use "sprinkle" images in alternating sides(right and left) in the most relevent section. In general, pictures aren't heavily used in lists(unless there is an abundance of such pictures). Again...it's really more or less about personal preference.
I have a concern regarding copyright, you state the image was taken in 1934 and that it is your own work. Do you have the copyright to the actual picture?(Just making sure=P).
Anyways, great work. The images and captions are great...and will breath some life(black and white) into the article. If you need help with images...see WP:IMAGES. Cheers!Smallman12q (talk) 01:26, 31 August 2009 (UTC)

Rjanag comments re pics added to McGee Airways article

Rjanag sent me a message (you can find it on my talk page) questioning to my ownership of the 2 pictures. I left him a reply message on his talk page indicating that I do own these pictures - they were taken by my father and I am in sole possession of his picture collection. I have the negatives. What else do I need to do?? Old33 (talk) 16:47, 31 August 2009 (UTC)

Changes to Linious "Mac" McGee info box

Article history shows: 21:59, 27 August 2009 Rjanag (talk | contribs) (6,953 bytes) (fur trader and miner are just minor jobs, not what he's known for. for example, on the Barack Obama article we wouldn't put "worked at McDonald's" in the infobox) (undo) I don't view this as any big deal, but by way of explanation I included "fur trader" occupation because this is what directly led McGee into the airline business - his needing airplane transportation for his fur business; his partnering with Barnhill to start Barnhill & McGee Airways which branched out into a charter service as well as supporting McGee's fur business. I included the "miner" occupation because it was his desire to return to mining that led him out of the airline business, selling to Star Air Service. I don't know if Rjanag is interested in the explanation or not - I will leave that up to you. Old33 (talk) 19:02, 1 September 2009 (UTC)

I've restored them as they are listed on Alaska Airlines official site. The fact he went back to mining and sold the airline as a result of this transition, means it was indeed an important occupation for him. I'm sure that Rjanag is watching over us=D.Smallman12q (talk) 00:03, 2 September 2009 (UTC)

Advice Taken

Hi, I took some of your advice from my editor review and started working on new articles. One of them made it onto the DYK section today after a lot of input from another editor, thanks for the inspiration. GainLine 12:48, 9 September 2009 (UTC)

My pleasure! You'll find that making articles is often just as fun(if not more) than cleaning up someone elses.=DSmallman12q (talk) 12:55, 9 September 2009 (UTC)
A bit harder work but much more satisfying. I recommended it to another editor in their review as well. Thanks again. GainLine 12:59, 9 September 2009 (UTC)

Star Air Service

The list of external links is somewhat temporary & I will be trimming it down - but I am glad to get the 10 count guideline. I could make some of them references, but a question - If my statement of fact is "They purchased a Curtiss Robin airplane." I would like to provide a link that has a good color pic of that plane - but using an unrelated website that just has a pic, does not validate the statement of fact, so I was unsure whether to use a reference that is related, but not supportive of the statement is OK. I will appreciate your thoughts. Another problem I am running into - perhaps 95% of the facts in the article will be from one of the references, although many will also be referenced to other sources as well. In my earlier articles I was asked to provide a lot more references than I had originally provided, so I am inclined to reference most every statement of fact. But I will end up with excessive reference citings to my primary reference. Would I be better off to eliminate individual citations to primary source in the article and only include my primary reference as a "General Reference" listed by itself in the Reference section in addition to the reflist? Of course, I would cite individual references to all the other sources. Suggestions appreciated. You can see what I mean by looking at the article. The Star article will be longer than my previous articles, but it is an interesting story. Old33 (talk) 01:33, 9 September 2009 (UTC)

Pictures aren't really useful as references because, as you point out above, they don't usually prove anything. They're also not usually useful as external links because a single picture isn't a new "information resource" (more guidelines at WP:EL). I would suggest just removing the pictures. For instance, the Davis monoplane picture—since this article is about the airline and not about the plane, there's no need to have an external link to a photo. If the photo is out of copyright then you can always upload it and display it within the article for decoration (with an appropriate caption), but it's not necessary as a link. rʨanaɢ talk/contribs 12:24, 9 September 2009 (UTC)
That's a good question. Generally, with regards to the references, if a section or paragraph has the same references repeatedly, you may put them at the end. It's really editor preference more or less unless someone challanges a particular statement, then it would have to be referenced. e.g.

Early history in Seattle(currently)

Mills and Waterworth were anxious to start a flying school and charter business in Seattle with hopes of expanding to Alaska. Mills, who was married and the father of two sons, mortgaged his home, and he and Waterworth purchased a two-place Davis monoplane, and started Northern Air Service.[1] Waterworth completely destroyed the plane in a crash in Centralia, Washington.[1] Their new company was without an airplane, and they needed a new partner to help finance the purchase of another airplane.[1]

Charlie Ruttan was an ideal prospect. He already has his transport pilot’s license when the Davis crashed.[1] He joined the company and loaned enough money to purchase a two-place Fleet Deluxe B-5 biplane in Glendale, California in 1931.[1] By then, it was too late in the year to take the plane to Alaska, so the trio kept working in Seattle through the winter.[1]

With regards to the external links...the pictures of the aircraft(unless they are the original aircraft) aren't really too helpful. Instead, try wikilinking to the aircraft(if possible) or consider making a small aircraft stub...there you could put these external link pictures. In general, links to individual pictures(unless somehow notable) are discouraged...links to galleries though are quite nice=D.

Also, when you finish cleaning up the external links, do consider nominating your article for Did You Know at T:TDYK. If you need help let me know=D. Cheers!Smallman12q (talk) 12:29, 9 September 2009 (UTC)

Thanks for advice. I am still creating the Star Air Service article, not quite ready to go public with it. I thought I was only working in my User:RoyDickson\History of Aviation in Alaska space, but it appears both places. I have 2 more sections to complete & some pics to upload, airplanes to list, general clean-up etc. But getting there! Old33 (talk) 21:00, 9 September 2009 (UTC)

Star Air Service DYK

Thanks for the encouragement & assistance. I am knee deep is some minor refinements and need to upload a couple of photos. Sure. I just wanted to give you the oppurtunity to nominate it...but if you insist=P...sure I'll do it. You've come a long way from inserting lists of people into articles to actually making well written, well referenced articles. Cheers!Smallman12q (talk) 21:30, 11 September 2009 (UTC)

I improved headings per GA1; also took the liberty to add to the hook on nomination template - added " which is celebrating its 75th anniversary" to the text you had (they are officially saying 1934-2009 makes the 75th anniversary. Hope making this addition is legal! Old33 (talk) 18:21, 13 September 2009 (UTC)

Ye, its fine. I notice that you're adding some pictures to Star Air Service...and there's a star on the side. Did they have some kind of logo? (It could be added under the fair-use rationale..see Wikipedia:LOGO for more information).Smallman12q (talk) 22:15, 13 September 2009 (UTC)

I've created a navigational Alaska Airlines template that you may use.

Let me know if it's useful.Smallman12q (talk) 13:22, 15 September 2009 (UTC)

I added the maintained template to the Talk:Star Air Service page but did not add it to the Star Air Service article - the instructions seemed to limit it to Talk pages. I am studying improvement suggestions & working on the ones I can undertand!! Old33 (talk) 16:41, 15 September 2009 (UTC)

Star Air Service lead section

I have posted a draft of a proposed new lead article on User:RoyDickson/Sandbox - would you plz take a look at it? Does it meet criterion for lead article? Suggestions welcome. Old33 (talk) 18:52, 18 September 2009 (UTC)

It's pretty good...I'm gonna edit it a bit...it does satisfy WP:LEAD.Smallman12q (talk) 19:32, 18 September 2009 (UTC)
I have offered a revision, but I fear its not as comprehensive as it should be. The airline terminology seems a bit foreign to me=P. User:Arsenikk and Rjanag will also hopefully help further refine it. On a side note, generally, if the statement is referenced in the page, there is no need to cite it again in the lead...though it is up to the editor=D(references never hurt).Smallman12q (talk) 20:30, 18 September 2009 (UTC)
It's pretty good, but you need to add some more general info such as hubs, destinations, and passengers served.Smallman12q (talk) 16:46, 19 September 2009 (UTC)

You should add a section about "incidents and accidents" as well as one about Aircraft livery(the logo/design) they used. If possible, information about employee benefits/customer perks would be great too. I've split the lists into 2 columns to make it shorter...keep up the great work.Smallman12q (talk) 19:24, 20 September 2009 (UTC)

PS article

Thank you for your contributions to the PS article. I have made some necessary changes and would welcome your feedback on the article's talk page. Please note that according to WP:CITE it is not necessary to provide more than one reference for one statement and per WP:LEAD this is especially holds true in the lead paragraph where I reinserted he YouTube fame section. You really didn't need to react to the other user with so many refs but thanks for the effort.

Otherwise, I don't mean to be contrevening WP:BITE and its nice to see you in the Adopt a User program which I helped found a few years back. Thanks.

ephix (talk) 07:54, 21 September 2009 (UTC)

You're probably right...but I've always found that extra citations don't hurt...and as the article is about a living person, I decided to provide "ample" references. Thanks for removing the excess references...and leaving what you considered to be the best. Adopt a user is indeed a nice program...myself being an a graduated adoptee=D. I'd also like to mention that I do appreciate the courteous message. Smallman12q (talk) 20:36, 21 September 2009 (UTC)

Video Clips ??

Do you have any experience with adding video clips to articles? I have some video clips that would fit in well with the Alaska aviation articles. I see that the video has to be in an unusual compression format. I haven't found a very helpful "how to" article in the help section. Any tips? Old33 (talk) 14:13, 27 September 2009 (UTC)

Ye, I have some experience. Wikipedia has a most unusual compression format...its a bit dated and not very good. Generally, it's best to create a subsection in "External links" and link to the website they're hosted on. Are these original footage clips, or youtube videos...wikipedians currently don't really approve of youtube videos unless they are from 'official' channels, or contain some type of unique footage? If it is an original clip...I could help you convert and upload them to wikipedia. If it is a third party/official website (these are usually copyrighted) so its best to simply link to them. I hope this is helpful...if you need more help let me know.Smallman12q (talk) 20:37, 28 September 2009 (UTC)

The video clips I am talking about are my original footage. I also donated the clips (non-exclusive usage) to Univ of Alaska & the clips are on line in the Alaska Digital Archives. Perhaps a link to that is the best??? Old33 (talk) 21:24, 28 September 2009 (UTC)

That is very kind=D. It's best to leave a link...(I'll try to download them from there and convert it back to the format supported by wikipedia, but a link is the best for now). Could you list the links you're referring too?
On a side note, I've noticed that you've released several images into public domain such as File:StarBellancaOnFloats.jpg, but for the permission, you request that the photographs be attributed to you. Under the public domain license, people are not required to attribute the author. Perhaps you meant to release them under the Creative Commons Attribution 3.0 license? Images released under CCA,license description or Creative Commons licenses for more info.Smallman12q (talk) 14:42, 29 September 2009 (UTC)

I am finding the photo licensing very confusing - I changed the license on StarBellancaOnFloats.jpg to CreativeCommonsAttribution Cc-by-3.0 tag as a trial. Is that the appropriate tag? I tried to also add a non-commercial tag Db-ccnoncom but that wasn't accepted. That additional restriction is not critical to me. I rec'd permission to use the Alaska Digital Archives pic of student pilot beside Star Air Service Fleet 7 biplane for one-time use with attribution in the article, not to be copied for any other uses. I hope I can add it to the article - it is a great pic! What license tag do I want to use for this restriction? Thanks for your help. Old33 (talk) 16:58, 29 September 2009 (UTC)

Yes, the is the correct template tag. This will ensure attribution to you, but will allow others to use it for commercial work.
With regards to the 1 article permission, I believe you will need to make a WP:OTRS request..(Wikipedia:Image use policy does not detail how to handle this=(...but I will ask that Rjanag comment on that as I am not completely sure. (All images that will improve the article are appreciated, even if only under a limited use license).Smallman12q (talk) 00:55, 30 September 2009 (UTC)
If a picture is to be used in one article only and can't be used anywhere else, it's not a freely-licensed picture and thus can't use the CC or public domain tags; for such a picture, the only option is to upload it as a fair use image and include a Non-free use rationale template on it. But you can only upload fair-use images if you have a very strong reason for doing so (they must meet all eight of the non-free content criteria: specifically, they must be necessary to aid readers' understanding of the article in a way that text alone cannot, and there must be no free equivalents/replacements anywhere else).
Also, images uploaded with a "for Wikipedia use only" license are not allowed, since Wikipedia in general is released under GDFL and CC and therefore we have very little control over how other people use Wikipedia content (in other words, if people upload an image "for Wikipedia use only", other websites will end up copying and displaying it anyway. Therefore, images have to either be uploaded under a compliant license (like CC-BY-3.0) or uploaded as fair-use only. rʨanaɢ talk/contribs 01:01, 30 September 2009 (UTC)
To Old33, it would be best to upload it using a Non-free use rationale. Remember that as a non-free image, it should only be uploaded to wikipedia, not the commons. In addition, if you are not the copyright holder, or gave the image to the alaska historical archives, I would recommend that you have a WP:OTRS request that alaska historical archives allows the use of the image for that article...I hope this isn't too difficult a procedure for that one image...it should be worth it.Smallman12q (talk) 01:21, 30 September 2009 (UTC)

Converting the Video Clip

I have the 51 second video clip that I would like to add to Star Air Service article ready. I have a .mpg file 39668kb of the video. The clip shows the Star Air Lines fleet of Bellanca planes flying in formation over Anchorage July 1939 celebrating Kenny Neese's arrival back in Anchorage with his new Beechcraft biplane. You can get an idea of the content by playing video at http://vilda.alaska.edu/cdm4/item_viewer.php?CISOROOT=/cdmg11&CISOPTR=5259&REC=16 but that .mov file is a little shorter and not as good quality. How can I proceed to transfer the mpg file to you for conversion & uploading per your earlier suggestion? Old33 (talk) 16:44, 1 October 2009 (UTC)

I did a google search and found media-convert. I gave it a try and they work...simply select "ogg video" as the output format. If you want to do it offline, try mediacoder, while it's no longer fully open source, its still free.
If you are unsure what to do, or want me to do it, let me know...I have no problem converting files=D.(See also Wikipedia:CMF commons:Help:Converting video)Smallman12q (talk) 00:59, 2 October 2009 (UTC)

The video clip is in process of conversion - I will add it to article when it is available. As for the still pic from Alaska Digital Archives, I have obtained a written authorization to use the pic specifically for this wikipedia article, so I wouldn't think I would need anything else. What do you think? Shall I just go ahead & upload it to Wiki (not commons) & add it? Old33 (talk) 19:36, 2 October 2009 (UTC)

You may upload the image and use the Non-free with permission with the Non-free use rationale template. If someone has copyright concerns, you could start an OTRS ticket, but it usually doesn't come to that.Smallman12q (talk) 21:06, 2 October 2009 (UTC)

Peter Schiff's infobox

A lot of the information is unsourced and/or unneeded. I think the infobox should reflect his running for U.S. Senate. He needs to have a more general infobox, not the economist one. --StormCommander (talk) 00:39, 6 October 2009 (UTC)

The information is quite well sourced. He has stated many times that he is indeed of the Austrian School of Economics. I don't believe there is an infobox for running U.S. senators, maybe there is...but even as a running candidate, there is no reason to remove his school of thought. (Is a politician to have an empty infobox-.- )Smallman12q (talk) 00:48, 6 October 2009 (UTC)
I just think it looks a little random saying "Austrian School" above his picture. Why not "Republican Party" or "Senate Candidate." I would rather see nothing up there. --StormCommander (talk) 03:05, 6 October 2009 (UTC)
The infobox is for economists...hence infobox economist. Find a different infobox for politics, not economics and then you may add in the desired info such as the fact he's running on the Republican ticket. On a side note,I've copied this discussion to Peter Schiff's talk page Talk:Peter Schiff#Peter Schiff's infobox so that other interested parties may provide input. Inserting Video Clip in Star Air Service article

I converted the 51sec video clip to ogg format & uploaded to Commons: Star_Air_Line_Fleet1939_Video.ogg Need help adding it to article. Note User Talk:RoyDickson/Sandbox end of section "Birth of Alaska Airlines" - I tried the best I could find in help, but doesn't seem to work. I hoped to add it with a thumb like a pic that would play the video when selected. Appreciate your help. Old33 (talk) 21:43, 4 October 2009 (UTC)

Unfortunately, I don't have time today...the error is that it is in the mpeg2 format. I will correct this tomorrow for you. Cheers!Smallman12q (talk) 23:54, 4 October 2009 (UTC)

I see that you inserted the code in the article in User:RoyDickson/Sandbox to put a thumb on the right immediately after the title of the "Birth of Alaska Airlines" section, but it doesn't show up as a thumb, only a linked file name linking to the video file in commons. Old33 (talk) 21:19, 5 October 2009 (UTC)

Ye, its incorrectly encoded, I'm a bit busy this week...and mediacoder doesn't seem to be cooperating. I don't the time to play around with it unfortunately, so I've put up a request that the video be transcoded correctly by User:Raul654. You may view the request at User Talk:Raul654#Video conversion...once again, I'm sorry, but I'm too busy to play around with the transcoder...sorry!Smallman12q (talk) 01:04, 6 October 2009 (UTC)
I've re-encoded it and uploaded it. You can see it at User:RoyDickson/Sandbox. Unfortunately, the thumbtime parameter is broken...so the still pic given is bad, but otherwise the video should work. Cheers!Smallman12q (talk) 16:37, 6 October 2009 (UTC)

Actually when you try to play it, it hangs at buffering 2% or buffering 4% & never progresses! Old33 (talk) 19:44, 6 October 2009 (UTC)

That's odd...it works in firefox for me. Are you using IE (Internet explorer) or another browser? Do you have a slow internet connection? It should work though...Smallman12q (talk) 22:49, 6 October 2009 (UTC)

Using Firefox when trying to play video it hangs with "buffering 2%" & never progresses. I tried it under IE8 & when trying to play video got the message "Sorry your system does not appear to have any supported player software. Please download a player." Clicking on download a player prompted me to install Java which I did, but get the same buffering hang result. I have not found a place to download Cortado player which is what it says the selected player for the video is. Very confusing - perhaps the video isn't worth all the trouble?? Old33 (talk) 19:13, 7 October 2009 (UTC) More info, I am able to play the "Video of the Day" in Commons. I have a fast (Comcast Cable) connection. Old33 (talk) 19:34, 7 October 2009 (UTC)

That is odd...it should be able to play. I assure you though that it plays in my firefox...and I too have a cable connection. Are you using firefox 3.5...or an older edition? (You can check by going to help->about. Most people viewing the page will be able to play the video. It shouldn't be that confusing...Wikipedia simply uses an obscure free format. The video provides a rare glimpse at the actual planes used by Star Air Lines...I think it's worth it. Smallman12q (talk) 19:46, 7 October 2009 (UTC)
The video plays fine for Rjanag, so its most likely your viewer...other people will still be able to play the video=D.Smallman12q (talk) 19:59, 7 October 2009 (UTC)

I was using Firefox 3.0, upgraded to 3.5 & the video played fine. Now it defaults to Native Player instead of Cortado & works fine. Sorry for the confusion - glad you think the video is valuable. Old33 (talk) 21:55, 7 October 2009 (UTC)

hehe...Even firefox has bugs occasionally. As you can see, most firefox(and hence most educated internet viewers) should be able to see the video. I view any glimpse into history as valuable. As they say, a picture is worth a thousand words...so a video is priceless. =DSmallman12q (talk) 23:30, 8 October 2009 (UTC)

Alaska Star Logos section

When you can please take a look at User:RoyDickson/Sandbox where I added a logos section. I tried to put the pictures across on one line left, center, right but the one on the right always dropped down which didn't look good. So I stacked them. What do you suggest? Old33 (talk) 00:08, 9 October 2009 (UTC)

If the section is too short, you may scatter the pictures around the article. You should consider lengthening it a bit though...one sentence is a rather poor section. Add why were they painted orange? The logos may be used in the article's infobox. Also, did the company have a slogan of any sorts?
On another note, there is a wikipedia policy concerning the use of logo images(as they may be subject to copyright/trademark privileges). See Wikipedia:Logos. It basically says that you should tag your logos Logo fur & non-free logo. Also, logos shouldn't be uploaded to the commons.Smallman12q (talk) 00:34, 9 October 2009 (UTC)

A speedy deletion tag was placed on my photo File:StarAirServiceIreneIrvine.jpg. I placed a holdup tag with an explanation on the talk page. What has gone wrong here? Can you gude me? Old33 (talk) 17:34, 9 October 2009 (UTC) Also, based on your note, I need to delete the logo pics from commons and load them into Wikipedia. You did not provide a proper fair-use rationale as per Wikipedia:Non-free use rationale guideline. I have added one. When "wikilinking" file names, place a colon ":" before File so it should be :File:StarAirServiceIreneIrvine.jpg, not . In general, wikipedia generally does not accept images which are only allowed for one article (for legal reasons), so they can only be used with a non-free rational.
To nominate an article for deletion in the commons, go to the file you wish to delete. Then you should see a "Nominate for deletion" option at the bottom of the toolbox in the sidebar on the left side of your screen. Next type in your rationale such as "non-free logo, should upload to wikipedia rather than commons" and hit ok.
Wikipedia does have an ever growing bureaucracy, but it is important in complying with US laws. Hope this helps.Smallman12q (talk) 22:20, 9 October 2009 (UTC)
As your claim to having authorization to use the image on Wikipedia is being challenged by User:Ww2censor, I recommend that you get the University of Alaska to send an email verifying the authorization. (See Wikipedia:Requesting copyright permission, Wikipedia:Example requests for permission) The University of Alaska's website suggests that you email fyapr@uaf.edu to make a request. They should send a copy of their response to permissions-en @wikimedia.org . (For Ww2censor's discussion see User talk:Ww2censor#File:StarAirServiceIreneIrvine.jpg.)
Also, as the image is currently labeled non-free...it should only be used in live article space, not userspace, so I've moved the image to the actual article.
Was Irene Ivine also a pilot...she isn't listed as a pilot...Smallman12q (talk)
I hope this helps...Smallman12q (talk) 22:45, 9 October 2009 (UTC)

No, Irene Irvine was a student pilot (customer) taking flying lessons from Star Air Service but never flew for them. Old33 (talk) 16:52, 10 October 2009 (UTC)

I was going to respond on my talk page to you but as there is a discussion here I will add a few comments. A few points that are not really accurate. You wrote: "wikipedia generally does not accept images which are only allowed for one article." I doubt this is really what you wanted to say because it is not true. Non-free images, not all images, must be used in at least one article and that must be in the main space not user space. This is due to fair-use policy WP:NFCC#7 whereby orphaned non-free images will be deleted and that was why I nominated it. If the university provide a free licence release all will be well, otherwise Old33 will have to justify its use by a fully completed fair-use rationale which seems like the way to go because the image details online make it unclear if the image is actually free. Star Air Service was not founded until 1932 so it is unlikely that PD-US applies. Smallman12q I think that you painting an inaccurate picture when you say that "Wikipedia does have an ever growing bureaucracy" but there is certainly more diligence concerning copyright violations and many more improperly images are being uploaded every day. For a better understanding of most of the aspects of image copyright you may like to read this page of mine. Anyway good luck. ww2censor (talk) 13:28, 10 October 2009 (UTC)
I do concede that your explanation is a better than mine. Thanks for the link...your page is certainly easier to read an understand, I'm sure RoyDickson will appreciate it. Thanks.Smallman12q (talk) 13:43, 10 October 2009 (UTC)

Star Air Service Logo Upload fixes??

I marked all 3 of the logos used in the [[Star Air Service}} article for deletion in Commons. I uploaded one File:Star_Air_Service_LogoB.jpg to Wikpedia - it is a copy of the Star_Air_Service_LogoA.jpg which had been loaded to Commons, renamed to avoid conflict. Before I re-upload the other logos, could you check this one out to see if I am interpreting it all OK & not violating any more rules & regs plz? Old33 (talk) 18:44, 10 October 2009 (UTC)

Ye its fine. The only thing is that as its a non-free logo, it should only be used in namespace. (This means you really shouldn't use it in your sandbox...just in the actual article).Smallman12q (talk) 20:53, 10 October 2009 (UTC)
Actually...I've retagged it with PD-textlogo & Trademarked because the logo is only text and a barnstar(a simple geometric shape) rather than Non-free logo. However, Non-free logo is sufficient. (This is something you probably couldn't have known...but its nothing to worry about, just tag the logos with Non-free logo and as your adopter...I'll correct them if needed=D). Cheers!Smallman12q (talk) 21:04, 10 October 2009 (UTC)

A series of fixes & additions to Star Air Service which hopefully will pass muster. I reloaded 3 logos to Wikipedia after marking the logos on Commons for deletion. I added logo to Infobox and added a new Livery & Logos section where I used the other 2 logo pics. I marked the Star Air Lines logo as PD-textlogo & Trademarked since it is only a simple geometric shape. I marked the Alaska Star Airlines logo as non-free since it is quite complex and unique. Old33 (talk) 19:11, 11 October 2009 (UTC)

Ye looks good...one comments, when providing non-free rationales...it is advised that you use the Non-free use rationale template for non-free images and the logo fur template for non-free logos. I'll correct the rationales tmrw...a bit tired now=PSmallman12q (talk) 01:09, 12 October 2009 (UTC)

Univ of AK Fairbanks provided the email confirming my assertion that I had written authorization to use the "Irene Irvine" pic in the article. I have added a couple more planes to the fleet list & did a little clean-up. I think I am finished with the article now. Thank you so much for all your help! I would now like to expand my McGee Airways article, then do an article on Woodley Airways, then try to add some sections to the History of Aviation in Alaska article with some details of the first airplanes, air services, etc in Alaska. Any suggestion? Old33 (talk) 16:30, 13 October 2009 (UTC)

That's great=D. Did they also send a copy of the authorization to permissions-en@wikimedia.org(if not, I believe you can also forward their email)? The Star Air Service article looks really good now, but it's still missing a few sections:destinations/routes, accidents/incidents, and services offered. Other than that, the article has come a long way and looks great! You've done a terrific job developing the article all by yourself ^.^ !Smallman12q (talk) 23:44, 13 October 2009 (UTC)

Yes, they sent the email to permissions-en-wikimedia.org & sent me a copy. So that should settle that issue.Old33 (talk) 00:47, 14 October 2009 (UTC)

In that case, you may consider the issue "resolved".=D Smallman12q (talk) 18:57, 14 October 2009 (UTC)

Hello, it's me with the silly old chemtrail twaddle in Hungary. Thank you for your friendly invitation and please do not think I'm a complete nutter! I would very much like to contribute to Wikipedia on non-controversial subjects since I am widely credited with an encyclopaedic knowledge - which view I thoroughly disown, because there is so much more to know. Perhaps I should apply my professional knowledge in the first instance and translate some articles from a number of languages I am conversant with into English. Again, just a note to let you know I appreciate your kindness, but am thoroughly at a loss how to get the ball rolling. JSW. 213.222.131.222 (talk) 17:15, 20 October 2009 (UTC)

Non-free image license

(By the way, I just noticed your Village Pump thread. For stuff about non-free image use, you might be able to get a better response at WP:Non-free content review... but in my experience that thread is generally more about images that people agree are non-free, and disagree over whether their use is justified—less so about images where people can't decide whether they're free or not.) rʨanaɢ talk/contribs 23:06, 23 October 2009 (UTC)

Thanks...I wasn't aware of such a board...I've also added a link into Wikipedia:Non-free use rationale guideline so that more people may find it.Smallman12q (talk) 00:56, 24 October 2009 (UTC)

More Pic Licensing Problems / Confusion ?

I have rec'd a series of emails from Permissions regarding my File:StarAirServiceIreneIrvine.jpg photo. Brief history - I obtained written permission for use of photo from owner (Univ of AK Fairbanks) & uploaded the pic to Wikipedia (NOT Commons) per your directions. ww2censor promptly marked it for removal requesting an email from owner (see my talk page). I rqst'd email from Univ of AK Fairbanks which they sent to me w/ copy to permissions. We thought this resolved the issue but then the emails from permissions to me started. If you like I can email you the complete series of emails, but following is the latest which describes the issue, which I don't know how to resolve:

[Ticket#2009101010027301] Authorization to use photo in a single Wikipedia article The email you have sent us regarding permissions reads (this is the email Univ of AK Fairbanks sent to permissions at my (OLD33) request:

"We don't have a signed agreement of use on file for you but that is standard when a photo is copied from Alaska's Digital Archive [on-line archive: vilda.alaska.edu], rather than being purchased from us. You checked with us before going on-line with your article, requesting permission to use the image. That permission was granted. You appropriately credit the collection and the institution, and acknowledge copyright. This meets the requirements for using photographs."

Images and other media are allowed only if they are under a free license (such as the above and certain other Creative Commons licenses). You can see the allowable licenses at <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Image_copyright_tags/Free_licenses>. If you provide us with a clear statement that the copyright holder is releasing this content for redistribution under an allowable license, then the content may be used on Wikimedia projects. The email template at <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:CONSENT> can be used if needed. It is essential for Wikipedia that an exact license is agreed upon by the copyright holder which in this case may be the Alaskan Digital Archives but appears to be 'verso' which the archives state is the author of the image. Any ambivalence on this point is not acceptable. We sincerely apologize for any frustration caused by this. However, Wikipedia and Wikimedia Commons respects the rights of copyright holders and has very stringent measures put in place to protect their rights. Please be assured that nothing will happen to the photo as long as the OTRS pending tag is on the page. Thank you for your understanding! Please see <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Copyrights> for more information. Yours sincerely, Elena Salvatore

I will appreciate your help!! Old33 (talk) 15:08, 20 October 2009 (UTC)

Well, considering that the image is being used as a non-free image, a free license may not be needed. What Elana is trying to point out is that the University didn't release the image under a free license. However, the image is currently licensed as non-free so I don't see it requires a free license. I will ask at WP:VPP what to do...but from what I see, you should point out that the image is currently licensed to be non-free, and that the point is to keep the image on wikipedia without requesting more permission. I personally don't really "approve" of the tone used at the end of the email...its a bit too cold....I will help you get this resolved once and for all.Smallman12q (talk) 00:35, 21 October 2009 (UTC)
I've created a thread at Wikipedia:Village pump (policy)#Non-free Image license.Smallman12q (talk) 00:43, 21 October 2009 (UTC)
I would recomend that you respond to the OTRS email stating that you wish to use the image as a "non-free image with permission". If the image does not qualify for fair-use, only then should you request the university to release it under a free license....hope that helps (at least a little).Smallman12q (talk) 13:55, 22 October 2009 (UTC)
I've continued the discussion at [[Wikipedia:Non-free content review#File:StarAirServiceIreneIrvine.jpg...I do hope this gets resolved...you are free to continue contributing to wikipedia...I hope this hasn't discouraged you into leaving=(.Smallman12q (talk) 00:58, 24 October 2009 (UTC)

Just rec'd email from permissions & everything is AOK & resolved. Their message was very polite & congenial. I added a Routes & Destinations section to Star Air Service. I see we didn't make the Good Article class (but maybe we can qualify for better or best?? ha!) Old33 (talk) 21:11, 25 October 2009 (UTC)

Its good to see everything finally resolved. I'd put the article in the B+ range. You can try for GA in the future...it certainly could be achieved after some small cleanup. You added a routes/destinations section...thats good. Could you also add an accidents/incidents section? On a side note, google seems to think the article is fairly good...it comes up as the third result when you google "star air service". Keep up the good work!Smallman12q (talk) 00:36, 27 October 2009 (UTC)

Well, it seems to have gone from resolved to un-resolved! See User Talk:RoyDickson for the latest. It links to another page with more discussion. It all really doesn't seem reasonable, but let me know what you think please. Old33 (talk) 21:56, 28 October 2009 (UTC)

=(, I've left a reply at Wikipedia:Files for deletion/2009 October 28#File:StarAirServiceIreneIrvine.jpg. I suggest that you add Irene Ivine to the article. But other than that...not much else you can do except point out that the photograph depicts an instruction airplane whereas none of the others do. I do hope this gets resolved once and for all...this is becoming rather ludicrous.Smallman12q (talk) 21:26, 30 October 2009 (UTC)
Well it got deleted...what can I say...this is why so many editors leave. I do hope that you'll continue to make at least text contributions...Smallman12q (talk) 12:34, 31 October 2009 (UTC)

I am not, I am a graduate teaching assistant (sigh... ;)). Aw...but as for anonymity...I'm noticing that as well. People seem to be shying away from the "public" and into either anonymity or secrecy as with the arbCom election secret ballot. Deleted file

Was the deleted file discussed here being used in an article? If so, where?--Rockfang (talk) 06:13, 5 January 2010 (UTC)

That png version of that file File:Median and Average Sales Prices of New Homes Sold in United States 1963-2008 annual.png is currently being used in serveral articles. I don't know how to convert the graph to svg so I decided to upload a pdf version of that png for those who wish to be able to scale the image.Smallman12q (talk) 12:58, 5 January 2010 (UTC)

Correctional Populations

Thanks much for creating this:

I suggest putting the right-side labels in the order of the lines from top to bottom. I frequently have difficulty connecting the colors in such graph charts with the colors on the right.

Also, I suggest uploading this great chart to the Commons. It would be categorized here:

GIF scaling has been recently fixed on all Wikimedia sites, and so GIF images are OK to use if you want. GIF is great for such low-color charts with less than 256 colors. GIF scales using fewer kilobytes than PNG charts on Wikimedia. --Timeshifter (talk) 13:52, 6 January 2010 (UTC)

Jacques Maritain and Atheism

I responded to your concern about merging the three atheism (pseudo atheism, real atheism, absolute atheism) into Jacques Maritain, but since there are three articles, the response may be lost. I agree that creating an article for The Range of Reason would be appropriate/acceptable instead of the merge, but I do not think that the three concepts are of enough substance or notability to remain as three distinct articles. Also, I am concerned about one man's idea of what is a real atheist being the sole content on that page, since the term (as well as perhaps the other two atheist terms) are probably used often in informal conversation to mean something entirely different. Justin Satyr (talk) 03:01, 12 January 2010 (UTC)

I do understand your concern that Jacque's perspective is the only one listed for these terms, however you are more than welcome to add other perspectives given that you reference the sources. I do not believe that merging the three stubs into jacques maritain is a proper solution as that article is a description of jacques maritain and not his work. I do admit that leaving the three as separate stubs is rather sloppy and that they would do best in an article for The Range of Reason. If you'd like, I'd suggest that you create an article for The Range of Reason, and merge them there. Given the heavy nature of the range of reason...I'm not really in the zone to create an article for such a philosophical read right now, though I will create it if you don't=P. On a side note, I'd like to welcome you back after your long wikibreak=D.Smallman12q (talk) 18:43, 12 January 2010 (UTC)

)

I highly doubt I will write the article because I have a list of books to read and that work does not seem interesting enough to give it priority. I will probably end up expand at least one of those atheism articles because one person having the de facto perspective on real atheism (which most people would read as simply atheism) is, again, worrisome. Justin Satyr (talk) 05:04, 13 January 2010 (UTC)
You're more than welcome to expand the stubs, provided you don't merge them into jacque. I will create the article for The Range of Reason later this month when I have enough time to look at the book in detail. Until then, cheers! Smallman12q (talk) 19:40, 13 January 2010 (UTC)

Incarceration

Thanks for creating File:Incarceration rate of inmates incarcerated under state and federal jurisdiction per 100,000 population 1925-2008.png. But shouldn't the red line be labelled "Average", rather than "Incarceration rate" (which is unclear, since all three lines are incarceration rates).

Also, if you are putting it in public domain, you should consider transferring it to Commons so that other versions of Wikipedia can use it as well. rʨanaɢ talk/contribs 18:21, 5 January 2010 (UTC)

Smallman12q. Thanks for the chart. You might be interested in the sources listed in the image description section of this chart:
In particular, see Graph 4 in this article:
That incarceration rate timeline includes all inmates, including those in jails.
See also:
Also, did you create the graph itself using Microsoft Excel 2007? (It looks like an Excel graph to me). If so, you should specify that in the file description. rʨanaɢ talk/contribs 14:36, 6 January 2010 (UTC)

(unindent) I just discovered this very recent report:

In particular, see Appendix Table 1 on page 16. Prisoners under the jurisdiction of state or federal prisons or in the custody of state or federal prisons or local jails, December 31, 2000-2008. It lists the total incarceration rate (including jail inmates) in the right-most column. For the years 2000 through 2008. --Timeshifter (talk) 15:31, 6 January 2010 (UTC)

Mistake-The Bureau of Justice Statistics confused Imprisonment rate with Incarceration rate

 • Imprisonment rate- the number of prisoners sentenced to more than 1 year under state or federal jurisdiction per 100,000 U.S. residents. see page 16
 • Incarceration rate-the total number of inmates held in custody of state or federal prisons or local jails per 100,000 U.S. residents.see page 16

I believe I have made a mistake based on a mistake by the Bureau of Justice Statistics. What I've found is that they've done a terribly sloppy job at their site Key Facts at a Glance-Incarceration Rate, 1980-2007. It turns out that its actually the Imprisonment rate. On the bureaus site at

 • Key Facts at a Glance, it calls it "Incarceration rate, 1980-2007".
 • The graph of the above, while the graph title is imprisonment rate, the description above reads as "After sharp increases in the 1980s and 1990s, the incarceration rate has recently grown at a slower pace." It does however below say "

Note: Number of sentenced prisoners under state and federal jurisdiction per 100,000, 1980-2008. "

For imprisonment rate, the population per 100,000 began at 139 in 1980 and increased to a high of 506 in 2007 then it decreased to 504 in 2008."

 • Key Facts Corrections, it lists "Imprisonment rate:After sharp increases in the 1980s and 1990s, the incarceration rate has recently grown at a slower pace."
 • Spreadsheet/CSV, It lists it as: ""Number of sentenced prisoners under State and Federal jurisdiction per 100,000, 1980-2008","Imprisonment population per 100,000"

At the top of the spreadsheet, it gives the following information:

Bureau of Justice Statistics,
filename: incrt.csv,
"data source(s): Correctional Populations in the United States, 1997, and Prisoners in 2008",
author: William Sabol and Heather West,
refer questions to: askbjs@usdoj.gov (202) 307-0765,
date of version: 12/08/09,

Feel free to contact the bureaucrats and statisticians at the DOJ to try and get it corrected=D.

It appears that someone confused imprisonment rate with incarceration rate over at the Bureau of Justice Statistics. I'll relabel the chart today or tmrw to "imprisonment rate" rather than "incarceration rate."

Anybody have any thoughts on this?Smallman12q (talk) 17:26, 6 January 2010 (UTC)

They do respond to emails. I contacted BJS about something a long time ago, but I don't remember what it was.
They have changed the web address locations of much of the stuff on their site. I guess they went to a different content management system.
Stats and charts are such a minefield. I started this Commons page and category awhile back hoping to help things along:
I figured out BJS separated prison and jail info and stats awhile back, but it is definitely confusing to most people. Because prison and jail are synonymous to many people. Especially outside the USA. I recently figured out where they now catalog some of their main yearly info. This may help:
http://bjs.ojp.usdoj.gov/index.cfm?ty=pbse&sid=38
http://bjs.ojp.usdoj.gov/index.cfm?ty=pbse&sid=40
http://bjs.ojp.usdoj.gov/index.cfm?ty=pbse&sid=42
One good thing about BJS publications is that they are in the public domain if they are original publications of the federal government. I copied this chart directly from a PDF publication:
commons:File:US criminal justice cost timeline.gif --Timeshifter (talk) 18:08, 6 January 2010 (UTC)
I've finished the imprisisonment rate graph at File:Imprisonment rate in the United States by gender.png and File:Imprisonment_rate_in_the_United_States_by_gender.pdf. I will put up the incarceration graphs for CSD as they are actually imprisonment rates. I'll put up an incarceration graph when I finish writing some bots ^.^ .Smallman12q (talk) 20:47, 8 January 2010 (UTC)
Here's a graph for the incarceration rates File:Incarceration_Rate_in_the_United_States_1985,1990-2008.png. There are also some primitive graphs at senate site, relating to the high incarceration rate.Smallman12q (talk) 21:58, 8 January 2010 (UTC)
Thanks for creating the graph. I uploaded a GIF version to the Commons: File:Incarceration Rate in the United States 1985,1990-2008.gif. I used the freeware IrfanView to resize it to 600 pixels wide. It is legible at that size. I saved it in the GIF format since it is a low-color image, and so it does not need PNG or JPG. Plus GIF uses fewer kilobytes for the same size graph. Uploading to the Commons is as easy as uploading to Wikipedia. Images on the Commons are seen by wikipedians from hundreds of other-language Wikipedias. They can use the graph directly on their wikipedia, or use it to create a graph in their native language. --Timeshifter (talk) 07:31, 9 January 2010 (UTC)
There is a problem with the chart. There is a steep jump in the graph line from 1985 to 1990. It is possible to get the prison and jail numbers for 1985 to 1990 from here:
http://bjs.ojp.usdoj.gov/content/glance/tables/corr2tab.cfm
U.S. population for each year is found here:
http://www.census.gov/ipc/www/idb/informationGateway.php
Pick USA in the dropdown menu, and pick the year(s).
Admins can change the file name. Or you can upload to a new name, and ask the admins to delete the chart with the old name. That may be quicker. --Timeshifter (talk) 19:37, 10 January 2010 (UTC)
I'll try and do the calculations manually...though I fear they may lose accuracy(the government has a way of "seasonally adjusting" everything).Smallman12q (talk) 20:21, 10 January 2010 (UTC)

(unindent) Yeah, they screw up a lot of things. ;)

The numbers are a mixture of midyear totals (jails) combined with end of year totals (prisons). The census numbers for each year can be midyear or end of year. I wouldn't worry about it. I suggest taking whatever can be easily found at the US census site, and linked to. That way people can at least understand all the sources. If others want to create more charts using different choices, then more power to them.

I wish there were a free, simple graph maker where I could just paste in a column of yearly U.S. resident populations, and a column of yearly inmate totals, and out pops a graph of incarceration rates. But then that would be too simple. :)

I never had the patience to study the free software such as OpenOffice, Inkscape, etc. to do charts. I tried a few primitive online chart makers, and posted the results to the Commons, but they aren't that great. So thank you for your charts!

By the way, I use the freeware NoteTab Light. It allows one to copy and paste columns (blocks) of text of any width.

NoteTab: Modify menu, block, cut/copy/paste/delete.

In any part of a table of numbers, years, etc.. I can copy the years column from these tables:

I can copy the numbers column separately. I can then paste or rearrange columns. --Timeshifter (talk) 17:49, 12 January 2010 (UTC)

Well I just tried to calculate 1986-1989 and I got some results...they seem a bit off... What I do is take the (jail + prison)/(population/100,000) For 1986, I'm getting 332.79
 • 1987-353.65
 • 1988-388.26
 • 1989-436.2

It seems like quite a jump 88-89. So do these numbers look okay...should I remake the graph 1985-2008?20:00, 12 January 2010 (UTC)

The numbers look right to me. Mandatory-minimum sentences were being implemented more and more in the late 1980s. See New York Times article:
I suggest going back to 1980 since the numbers are solid going back that far. This makes for good chart combinations:
I'll go ahead and do that then...in the mean time, I created a gif for the population pyramids at IDB, but it doesn't seem to work right... File:United States Population by gender 1950-2010.gif. Any thoughts as to how I could get this to work?Smallman12q (talk) 21:48, 12 January 2010 (UTC)
I don't know about creating animated GIFs. You might ask for help here:
commons:Commons:Graphics village pump
It would serve a dual purpose. It would encourage the continued study and fixing of animated GIFs, and their scaling. See the thread there titled "Animated GIF resizing" --Timeshifter (talk) 00:30, 14 January 2010 (UTC)

Climatic Research Unit hacking incident

Resolved
 – Smallman12q (talk) 18:41, 17 January 2010 (UTC)

Thank you for your contributions to the encyclopedia! In case you are not already aware, an article to which you have recently contributed, Climatic Research Unit hacking incident, is on article probation. A detailed description of the terms of article probation may be found at Wikipedia:General sanctions/Climate change probation. Also note that the terms of some article probations extend to related articles and their associated talk pages.

The above is a templated message. Please accept it as a routine friendly notice, not as a claim that there is any problem with your edits. Thank you. --TS 14:22, 17 January 2010 (UTC)

Um...I didn't edit it this week...see the contribution history., though I did make a comment on the talkpage. I didn't realize that the talk page is on probation...I don't really understand what the point of this template is. Is it to remind new contributors that the article is on probation?Smallman12q (talk) 17:50, 17 January 2010 (UTC)
Yes, discussion on the talk pages is covered by the probation. It's just a reminder. It absolutely doesn't refer to anything you've said or done because I didn't look at any of your edits. I just noted that you're a relative newcomer to the global warming articles and hadn't yet been informed about the probation. All such notifications are logged at Wikipedia:General_sanctions/Climate change probation/Log#Notifications. --TS 17:58, 17 January 2010 (UTC)

Re: Lossless image compression for Www.wikipedia.org template

I'm not sure if I should post this here or at Talk:Www.wikipedia.org template, but I'll try here first.

The images being used for the Www.wikipedia.org template template could be losslessly compressed...saving a few kilobytes. You could save 1kb on the apple touch png, 1kb on the wikitionary logo, and a bit more on the others. Now while, those few kbs aren't much, given that http://www.wikipedia.org/ is the main page many people go to, it gets tens of thousands of views a day.(probably a lot more). I wanted to suggest that you change/update some of these with losslessly compressed ones(the file size of the picture would go down, with absolutely no effect on the image quality).

There is a free tool offered by yahoo called smushit at http://www.smushit.com/ysmush.it/ which can losslessly compress these images. Please consider updating the images to losslessly compressed ones. You may respond at my wikipedia talk page, as I won;t be watching here. w:User talk:Smallman12q Thanks! Hello Smallman12q and thanks for your message. You should probably either bring this up on m:Talk:Www.wikipedia.org template or m:User talk:Mxn. Those places have people more knowledgeable about this than me. ;-) Cbrown1023 talk 19:11, 17 January 2010 (UTC)
Will do. Thanks!Smallman12q (talk) 19:49, 17 January 2010 (UTC)

Thanks for the heads-up. The portal's images are all hosted on Commons, but unfortunately the administrators there keep deleting our 35-pixel images as "duplicates" of the full-size project logos, forcing us to use the thumbnails MediaWiki generates from the full-size images. MediaWiki is quite fast at generating thumbnails, but at the cost of larger file sizes. As a test, I've reuploaded the Wiktionary logo at 35 pixels with an explicit note about needing to save bandwidth. We'll see how long it lasts. – Minh Nguyễn (talk, contribs) 00:07, 18 January 2010 (UTC)

Red Link Recovery

Sample dump at User:Smallman12q/redlink_diacritics. Format is:

page,page,[page]]|link|suggestion,[suggestion]]
page|link|suggestion
page|link|suggestion,suggestion

It's a little bit less processed than the lists built for WP:RLR, but I'd expect it to be <8% false positives. Good luck. -TB (talk) 18:59, 13 January 2010 (UTC)

Thanks for the dump. The syntax is a bit confusing...so if I understand it right...its

referring article|red link|suggested target article and each is in csv. I'll go ahead and try to work from that.Smallman12q (talk) 20:02, 13 January 2010 (UTC)

Is it safe to assume that the "|" character isn't in any titles?Smallman12q (talk) 21:39, 13 January 2010 (UTC)
Its a quick dumb, but there are some repeats such as
Axelle_Red,Axelle_Red|A_Tâtons|À_Tâtons,A_Tatons
ITunes_Foreign_Exchange|A_cause_des_garçons|A_cause_des_garcons
Phil_Boyce,Phil_Boyce|A_là_carte|À_la_carte,A_la_carte

It seems Phil Boyce is listed twice as a referring article...Smallman12q (talk) 22:02, 13 January 2010 (UTC)

Its rather inefficient and a pain to have to filter out commas as they can be in the article. What I'd suggest is you use another character as listed in Wikipedia:Naming_conventions_(technical_restrictions). I'd suggest using either < or > rather than the comma separators...it'll make it a lot easier to code.=DSmallman12q (talk) 22:53, 13 January 2010 (UTC)
It's coming along nicely...for the next dump, change the commas to "<", but other than that...I'm pretty sure I'll have this thing done by the end of the week.Smallman12q (talk) 23:55, 13 January 2010 (UTC)
Sure thing, will have a fiddle with the dump process in the next day or two and cull duplicates. For the format, f you're a formal programmer, I can work to a grammar specified in anything from YACC to XSDL. For now, I'll iuse > as an inner-delimiter on lists, < as a list separator and a carriage return as a line break. As we're using only proscribed characters as delimiters, I'll not 'quote' list entries (ie with . This gives us
title>title<link>suggestion>suggestion
. I can offer one line per page, per link or per suggestion, or any combination of - what's most convenient depends on how you intend your tool to work, of course. - TB (talk) 09:50, 14 January 2010 (UTC)
Ye the quotes also have to go...I have to see whether it should/shouldn't have a "_" replacer for spaces. As for the list, it should go titles in "<"|red link|target articles in "<" . So rather than using comma delimited, we'll use "<" delimited.I don't believe that I'll need anything complicated like xml...=P I believe this would be the easiest and fewest lines of code for me. As for offering three lists, I'd refer to them as "anchors". For now the current anchor would be the red links and the referring article, and target article change around the red link. Once I finish, it would be fairly easy to offer both the reffering article, and target article as anchors...though it would require 2 more lists.

When a the red link is either relinked, or a redirect is made, that particular line will be removed from the "red link list" and moved to another "completed" list with the option to add a comment. When a red link is skipped, it'll add a "|" + skip counter to the list. This way we can see which are most skipped. (or simply do nothing). When a red link is marked "expert", it'll add "|" + expert.

When the suggestions are wrong for a red link, that would line would be moved to a "wrong" list and a comment as to why its wrong would be recorded.

I should have a beta ready for you today...the whole thing should be under 1000 lines of code, so not too bad.Smallman12q (talk) 13:57, 14 January 2010 (UTC)

screenshot of Red Link Recovery Tool
Here's a screenshot. So what I need now is a dump in the format titles in "<"|red link|target articles in "<" . Also, I'd prefer if you didn't fill in the spaces with "_" for the article names. It also checks for permission to use at Wikipedia:WikiProject Red Link Recovery/Tool/Allowed users. It's fairly inefficient, using about 15mb of ram in vista, and is about 200kb total(including 115kb for dotnetwiki dll), but I believe that all modern windows machines should be able to run it. It's written in vb.net 2.0 so I could also offer a port to mono. After you provide the dumb in the above format...it'll be basically some last minute debugging and then its good to go. This should make it a lot easier for those in Red Link Recovery project. After I get it running, I'll probably port it to extjs and make it javascript based so you can work from the web browser...but that'll be in the future=D.Smallman12q (talk) 19:01, 14 January 2010 (UTC)

Hi - thanks for all the links to help stuff

Hi!

Sorry, all the "talkback something..." links are Greek to me...

You said, "I've made a simple "wikipedia for starters" pdf for you at wikipedia for starters.Smallman12q (talk) 13:38, 15 January 2010 (UTC)"

... and gave the following link: https://secure.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/w/index.php?title=Special:Book&bookcmd=download&collection_id=488a5f3ba46994b2&writer=rl&return_to=User%3ASmallman12q%2FBooks%2FWikipedia+For+Starters ... which gives me a 404 message. Is it my browser?

Thanks again. And please, let's not stand on formality - you can just call me 62.57. 62.57.50.138 (talk) 22:41, 18 January 2010 (UTC)

What a Brilliant Idea Barnstar
This barnstar is awarded to Smallman12q for his application which will revolutionize the way newsletters are sent. Thank you so much! Ikip Frank Andersson (45 revisions restored):an olympic medallist for f**k's sake 23:01, 22 January 2010 (UTC)

glad to see someone else against flagged revisions. My concern is 100% an issue of trust. The way veteran editors flaunt the rules and abuse their authority now, they most definetly cannot be trusted to neutrally decide what can and cannot be allowed on wikipedia. Administrators will flaggrantly abuse flagged revisions the same way administrators flaggrantly abuse their authority now. Ikip Frank Andersson (45 revisions restored):an olympic medallist for f**k's sake 23:05, 22 January 2010 (UTC)

Thanks for the barnstar! As for flagged revisions, I absolutely agree...giving admins the power to allow/deny edits on an edit by edit basis, typically with some type of nationalisitc or biased agenda, isn't what a free and open encyclopedia is all about. 3. Why don't you put the original and the new idea side by side in your images? http://img686.imageshack.us/i/inthenewswebslice.png/

I have firefox 3.5.7, and this is what the page looked like to me: http://gyazo.com/3eb9338d33c76321b730298303d0a0c4.png no difference. Nothing new.

I would advertise this on main page talk.

Hope this helps. thanks again for everything. Let me know what happens. Okip (formerly Ikip) 05:15, 6 February 2010 (UTC)

I just checked the webchunks addon for firefox, and it seems to work with the old version of firefox=(. So for now, only IE8 can support web slices. There is a screenshot showing what it looks like in IE8. Thanks for responding=D.Smallman12q (talk) 14:47, 6 February 2010 (UTC)

Hi, you made a really good job on the web slices! Do you want to help me with something similar with the accelerators? I'm think about to integrate them into the smart tag (microsoft) article. or should we create a totally new? I also want to expand the smart tag and the ie6 article (searched in the archive.org and found the old ie6 beta page: http://web.archive.org/web/20010812031135/www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/preview/smarttags/default.asp ) mabdul 20:38, 10 February 2010 (UTC)

Glad to see someone interested. For accelerators, I'd suggest doing a new article at Internet Explorer Accelerator...it really does deserve its own article rather than sharing it with smart tags. As for smart tags, I'd also recommend adding sources from:

...the smart tag article is rather bad...but it can certainly be improved.

On a side note, you may be interested in commenting at Wikipedia:Village_pump_(technical)#Webslices_for_the_main_page/Talk:Main_Page#Web_slices with regards to adding web slices to the main page.Smallman12q (talk) 21:28, 10 February 2010 (UTC)

started in a sandbox: here mabdul 00:40, 11 February 2010 (UTC)
It's a pretty good start, I'll help out when I get some free time (I'm going to be busy today/tmrw)...I'd also suggest you add in a section about the [Windows 7 Accelerator Platform http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dd565720%28VS.85%29.aspx]. I'll expand the article and add some coding examples when I get the time...great start though!Smallman12q (talk) 15:26, 11 February 2010 (UTC)
Thanks ;) mostly its copied out of the ie8 article. the rest is only design mark-up. if the code-snippets could be added would be a good help. I'm really bad at this ;) mabdul 17:25, 11 February 2010 (UTC)
I've read up a bit on accelerators and it seems they could be used outside of IE...so we could either rename the article to Accelerators (Microsoft) or OpenService Accelerators...or something you come up with, but I think Accelerators (Microsoft) would be the best for now...Smallman12q (talk) 18:51, 11 February 2010 (UTC)

It seems the Web Slice Whitepaper is gone despite being linked from the Internet Explorer 8 Web Slice Style Guide...same goes for the accelerator white paper from Internet Explorer 8 Beta 1 Whitepapers for activities. You can send an email to msdn and ask that they put up which was a package of all the white papers relating to IE8 and they'll probably send you them. Other than that...I'm rather discouraged from expanding the article without the white paper... Another good site is: http://blogs.msdn.com/ie/archive/2008/03/06/activities-and-webslices-in-internet-explorer-8.aspx Smallman12q (talk) 19:13, 11 February 2010 (UTC)

In a few days I will look at this and starting to improve the content of the article (accelerator). I'm going to work and make party over karneval. ;) mabdul 14:26, 12 February 2010 (UTC)
When you do get back, do consider emailing microsoft or making a thread at msdn requesting the web slice and accelerator (activities) white paper. They'll be very useful in making the article.Smallman12q (talk) 23:51, 12 February 2010 (UTC)

A tag has been placed on File:Adobe pagemill 3.01 8 bit icon.gif requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section I2 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because it is an image page for a missing or corrupt image or an empty image description page for a Commons-hosted image.

Hey

Thanks for tip on cite tool - it will save me lots of work. Don't worry about criticising - thats how wiki works. Cheers! btw P.S. You haven't got the url for the DYK checking tool for >1500 chars? Ive lost it.Victuallers (talk) 13:21, 18 March 2010 (UTC)

I use User:Shubinator/DYKcheck. It checks to make sure an article qualifies for DYK. The other prose tool is User:Dr pda/prosesize.js. The url is probably this cut and paste character counter http://www.javascriptkit.com/script/script2/charcount.shtml . I'm glad to see you didn't take offence to my comment(none was meant). I won't pass/fail the DYK as I'm not really comfortable with that particular one, rather just wait for another DYK volunteer to rate it. Hope this helps. more browsers

I will help you, just leave a message at my talk page. what do you think: shouldn't we make a html3 / html 3.2 article at first and outsource that of the html article? mabdul 01:02, 25 March 2010 (UTC)

The current HTML coverage on wikipedia, to be blunt, sucks. Each HTML version/specification as well as documentype is notable enough to warrent its own article. I would suggest we start lower at HTML2 as dictated by links(http://www.w3.org/MarkUp/html-spec/ http://www.ietf.org/rfc/rfc1866.txt http://www.w3.org/MarkUp/html-spec/html-pubtext.html http://www.w3.org/MarkUp/html-spec/html-spec_toc.html)..At least there should be a redirect for HTML2.
I see you're also a fan of Opera...why don't we make separate articles for Opera versions? The current history of Opera at History of the Opera web browser has but a sentence for several versions...(and it doesn't list Version 1). It's also probably best to make a post at the Opera forums or send an e-mail to Opera asking that they improve their articles...Opera generally has pretty good documentation. Let me know what you think.Smallman12q (talk) 01:17, 25 March 2010 (UTC)
oh, That was really fast ;) Yeah, I'm a fan of Opera. But I'm somebody who want the challenge and want to learn more about the (web-)history. So don't thing that's good that I will create some Opera articles. The HTMl parts is more interesting - I think... by the way: are you German? Or why are you able to handle whose german links you add to the udiwww article? mabdul 01:23, 25 March 2010 (UTC)
My german is very poor...however, google translate did a pretty decent job of translating...see
Web history is good...I'd like to expand the coverage/create articles for browsers from the 1st browser war...I'd also like to expand coverage for historic HTML writers/net suites...coverage for a lot of old software is very poor/nonexistent on wikipedia.
For now, I would rather first expand coverage on these old browsers/net suites/etc., rather than start on the HTML specifications articles...but I will help you on any HTML articles you start.Smallman12q (talk) 11:39, 25 March 2010 (UTC)
You may be right: expand the coverage of old "browsers" and then create the html article(s): so we get the information which browser supports which html attributes at first... maybe in this order better.
As you realized: I'm German and my English is not so good to handle a new wikipedia article alone ;) mabdul 13:15, 25 March 2010 (UTC)
And any idea for the next application/software you want to expand? how about a short article about barque? or Fizzilla mabdul 16:20, 27 March 2010 (UTC)

I'm going to improve Cello (web browser) today...then I could try barque...for a few web browsers, I'm going to try and make C quality articles...others will simply be more or less stubs.Smallman12q (talk) 19:18, 27 March 2010 (UTC)
