FL opinion

Hi, I've been working on List of Cardiff City F.C. seasons in the hope of nominating it for featured list status soon but I have an issue with the article that I could do with a second opinion on. I've been through a few nomination discussions on other similar pages and you have been a regular contributor to them, so I hope you don't mind me asking. I am unable to find statistics for the clubs period between 1900 and 1910 when they played in the Cardiff & District and South Wales Amateur League so I have the table starting in 1910 when they joined the English pyramid. Do you think this would be a stumbling block in getting it to a featured list? Kosack (talk) 07:59, 22 July 2016 (UTC)

Thanks very much for your help. In your opinion, apart from any obvious minor issues I may have missed (grammar etc.), would the article in its current state be worthy of being a featured list? Kosack (talk) 17:37, 23 July 2016 (UTC)
Thanks for the help, it's greatly appreciated. Kosack (talk) 21:04, 23 July 2016 (UTC)

That's great thanks, any pointers on getting it up to speed are very welcome. I guessed there would be quite a bit that I hadn't even thought of. I'll hopefully get around to implementing those changes as soon as I get a chance. Kosack (talk) 16:54, 25 July 2016 (UTC)

Hi, I think I have implemented all of the changes you listed on my talk page a few days ago. One thing I have an issue with is the size of the other competitions column, I've tried enforcing a certain width to make it look less cramped but I've had no luck. Are you aware if it's possible to make the column maintain a certain width? Kosack (talk) 13:47, 28 July 2016 (UTC)
Thanks. I've tidied it up quite a bit now. I need to swap the Welsh Cup and other columns around at some point but after that I may put it up for FL. Is there anything else obvious I've missed? Kosack (talk) 15:35, 28 July 2016 (UTC)
Hi, I've implemented a split column for other competitions now and added the complete FA Cup results (the 1913–14 season does seem to have been correct about not entering), not sure why the Football Club History Database omitted those. In terms of other competitions to be added, I've included the Anglo-Scottish Cup from 1978–79 and the FAW Premier Cup results as well, don't think there are any others. One issue I've come across is that, when there are two competitions in the other column, the sort only recognises the top result. I've tried following the example from other pages like List of York City F.C. seasons but that seems to have the same problem. Is that an issue? Kosack (talk) 14:26, 8 August 2016 (UTC)

Oh my, can't believe I missed that, I literally looked through that season 4 or 5 times and missed that somehow. I have no sources for the Third Division South Cup, I'll have to see if I can find some. Thanks very much. Kosack (talk) 15:24, 8 August 2016 (UTC)

That's great thanks. Saves me digging. Kosack (talk) 15:56, 8 August 2016 (UTC)
Can I get your opinion on something. I have a reliable source now that will allow me to include goals from the Welsh Cup in the list. However, the source itself states that it doesn't include the stats in player totals to be inline with other sources. Would I be better off including them in the table or leaving them out? Kosack (talk) 08:56, 21 August 2016 (UTC)

Charlee Adams - Career statistics

Hi, I was wondering why when you edited Charlee Adams' Career statistics, you changed some, but not all zeroes to dashes? Using dashes to show that for example Birmingham didn't play in a competition that would come under Other, then that's fine. However if it's to show that while at Lincoln he signed after they had been knocked out of the cup competitions, so obviously couldn't play in them, then could it not be argued that his Birmingham appearances in 2014–15 under National Cup should be dashes rather than Zeroes, as he left the club before they had entered the competition and returned after they had been knocked out, so therefore was unable to play? If the way you edited it is how you prefer the page to look I don't have a problem with that, I'm just interested about the use of dashes and zeroes on this occasion. IP User vandalizing athlete pages

Hi Struway2. I noticed that you gave a warning to an IP user (121.209.169.185) back in June, due to their persistent vandalism of athlete pages. I just wanted to let you know that this user has continued to vandalize numerous pages even after you gave them your final warning. This user is targeting the pages of East Asian athletes, and lowering their "height" parameter in the source code so that the infobox displays a shorter height. I fixed as many as I could. Please do something about this. —Wash whites separately (talk) 10:12, 5 September 2016 (UTC)

Oh! I know what's happening. I have an add-on in Chrome that automatically converts any currency to €. Sorry, I haven't realized that it was affecting my edits. I'll disable it the next time I make an edit. Thank's for the heads up. Man, I must have so many edits to fix... Do I have access to any log that shows me every page I edited? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Royk14 (talkcontribs) 17:49, 13 September 2016 (UTC)

Fred Allen

Hi there Struway, hope you're well. You may have forgotten but all the way back in 2009, when I was quite new to the project, I added some stats for Luton Town to the page on Fred Allen (footballer), the Small Heath player. After a rather unfortunate exchange (my fault) we decided the circumstantial evidence was enough to conclude this was the same player, though the sources were not explicit on that. Now I was just doing some reading and I came across a couple of old Luton Town team photos here that show the Luton player Fred Allen—see 1892–93 and 1893–94, the 1893–94 one in particular. Now I think this might help us finally put this to bed one way or the other. Do you have you any Small Heath photos showing the Fred Allen who played for them? Cheers, —  Cliftonian (talk)  07:55, 14 September 2016 (UTC)

Alan Roberts

As often is the case with players that were a while ago there is nothing (thatg I can find on Roberts. Believe me I've checked. But I do know he was fast ans direct, i've seen him play. If you want to just leave it as it was then do so I'll still sleep at night!

I've done my best to add a citation but its not done properly for Wikipedia, so maybe you could tidy the reference. Its my best effort! — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2.28.59.109 (talk) 08:00, 16 September 2016 (UTC)

Hi Struway, I've edited the navbox to remove one of the red links (Alexandre Vardin) and have left a note on the deletion discussion explaining why. Nevertheless, the navbox still navigates between 10 articles so have still voted keep on the basis that that's far more than some professional clubs! DYK for Alex Jones (footballer, born 1994)

On 27 September 2016, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Alex Jones (footballer, born 1994), which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that an administrative error by New Zealand Football prevented Alex Jones from completing his loan move to Wellington Phoenix? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Alex Jones (footballer, born 1994). You are welcome to check how many page hits the article got while on the front page (here's how, Alex Jones (footballer, born 1994)), and it may be added to the statistics page if the total is over 5,000. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page.

Two hoaxes

Hi there.

Im not really used to the deletion procedure in the english Wikipedia, but there are at the moment two football related articles, that are quite obvious imaginary. Christian Mead and Benedikt Prosenikov (already deleted in de.wikipedia) both created by the same user, don't stand up to scrutiny. Perhaps you can take a look at the two articles. Thanks in advance. --Ureinwohner (talk) 18:51, 3 October 2016 (UTC)

J1 League

Hello, about Piotr Świerczewski, J1 League full name was changed in 2015 season. (J. League Division 1 → J1 League) But, also until 2014 "J1 League" is commonly used like this; June 2010 version. thanks --Gonta-Kun (talk) 09:37, 27 October 2016 (UTC)

Association football positions

Well, the thing is, I started looking through the categories and found that a lot of players were not categorized at all - perhaps not true of English footballers, but it seems to be the case with other countries. So I figured this was a quick and dirty way to fix that. I'll run a quick AWB over any who are double-categorized and clean them up. It's far from ideal, but if the category does exist it ought to be populated, and this is a relatively way to get that taken care of.

I can think of a potential fix, actually, and I intend to suggest it to whoever it was coded the tool. --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 15:20, 7 November 2016 (UTC)

Yeah - Cat-a-Lot would be a lot more useful if it could be set to block people in subcategories. That would eliminate a good chunk of this issue. --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 16:04, 7 November 2016 (UTC)
Just letting you know I've cleared 'em all up. --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 13:08, 8 November 2016 (UTC)

No, I had no idea, cheers - I'll adjust my AWB settings to avoid any future errors. GiantSnowman 14:40, 12 November 2016 (UTC)

Soccerbase template

Why can't we just improve {{Soccerbase}} so it can be used in-line (given that it is - lots!) just like {{Soccerway}}? GiantSnowman 19:16, 13 November 2016 (UTC)

A follow-up to what we were talking about earlier: there are still a lot of footballers who don't appear to have a position under which they've been categorized. I note the existence of Category:Association football position missing. I can go ahead and fill it using AWB - I've already generated a list to work off of. Do you think that would cause trouble of some sort? I hope not, but it's going to fill up relatively quickly that way. I just think that I've done about all that can be done in semi-automated fashion, and hopefully this will allow more cracks to be filled in manually. --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 20:45, 17 November 2016 (UTC)

Thought about it a bit, and I created Category:Association footballers not categorized by position instead, and have begun filling it out. Let me know what you think - I can always delete it if it's problematic. Just thought it might be helpful, though. --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 02:49, 18 November 2016 (UTC)
Thanks. I'll try running the list again later and see what happens. Hopefully I can begin making a dent this weekend, if all goes according to plan. --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 14:59, 18 November 2016 (UTC)
PetScan says I've caught them all - it claims no further ones are showing up as incorrect. I'm going to try once more with the list and see what happens. If the same problem occurs again I'm going to leave it be for now. --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 06:59, 19 November 2016 (UTC)

Hi Struway, could you please get the page history for Luke Maxwell restored after it was deleted at AfD. Nice work on the article BTW. JMHamo (talk) 23:22, 18 February 2017 (UTC)

Hi Struway2. Seeing as you wrote this article, I thought you may be the best person to ask. With regards to Ilford and Faversham, was Beby the modern equivalent of a manager? I'm just wondering whether he should be added to the relevant categories and have it listed in his infobox. Cheers, Number 57 13:09, 9 March 2017 (UTC)

Hmm, difficult to say. I agree in lean towards him being the de facto manager in both cases, but I'm not sure that's enough for categorisation... I'll leave it for now. Cheers, Number 57 20:41, 9 March 2017 (UTC)

Johnny Newman

Not sure I follow your logic here - are you saying keep all possible parameters just in case an editor needs to use them in the future? GiantSnowman 20:46, 23 March 2017 (UTC)

I remove them because they're not needed. We shouldn't speculate when somebody might die - could be tomorrow, could be 20 years. When do we include the blank death paramaters? Seems morbid to me. Unless you suggest we include them in every infobox, and just have them blank for God knows how long, and possible encourage vandalism/false death reports? GiantSnowman 21:14, 23 March 2017 (UTC)

Hello. Been trying to improve this article a bit. Is there much about him in the Birmingham books you have? If so, is there any chance of getting a scan/photo of the relevant pages? His seasons at St Andrews are the only ones I don't have the appearance breakdown for. On the Pride of Anglia website someone claiming to be him has also stated his birthplace was Cannock not Brierly Hill – wondered whether this was mentioned? Cheers, Number 57 21:36, 19 March 2017 (UTC)

I've just realised the appearance data is at 1971–72 Birmingham City F.C. season etc... Number 57 21:38, 19 March 2017 (UTC)
Thanks, that's fantastic! I've emailed you, so you should have my email. Cheers, Number 57 19:09, 20 March 2017 (UTC)
A couple of queries, one of which is related – where did you get the newspaper articles from? I guess an online database? Also, I see you created James Bumphrey – it says he joined Durham City in 1915, but they weren't founded until 1918. Cheers, Number 57 19:17, 24 March 2017 (UTC)

Thanks for the message and sorry it was necessary. I was just going to add to a few players, then saw the list was fairly short but not really mentioned in any of their articles so decided to go for 'the set'. But I got lazy in terms of the refs when copying it from player to player. I think they're fixed now, and I think the caps themselves are accurate, if not let me know. Thanks. Editing

Hi mods sorry to bother you. The problem is that Mórtas is Dóchas started all these. My editing of these pages happened right after the international games and he kept reverting my editing to suit his agenda. I would like to stop this too but as you said if both methods are valid wouldn't it be fair if all these pages should revert to my version because I was the original editor of these pages throughout the international week?

Kindly advice. Thanks.

Jonathan Spector

According to this, there is no disadvantage if we don't repeat every cell that contains duplicate data. In fact, I think it looks more tidy if we don't repeat cells with duplicate data. As far as the Soccerbase reference, I am questioning the credibility here because of the fact that you have to give an explanation on why it should be one goal and not two goals. Kingjeff (talk) 06:05, 11 April 2017 (UTC)

I am not in agreement that there is a "slight advantage in accessibility when you repeat cells". You would have to link each reference to the league for there to be complete accessibility in the first place. But if you link every reference of the league, then MOS:OVERLINK applies. In MOS:OVERLINK, it takes the opposite view of WP:Football. It states "An overlinked article contains an excessive number of links, making it difficult to identify links likely to aid the reader's understanding significantly." This table clearly sides with MOS:OVERLINK. There is no "slight advantage in accessibility". Here is a table I have worked on. I do not see any disadvantage by not having the repeating cells.

As far as the reference error, I am not worried about that. There are edits such as this. Kingjeff (talk) 15:02, 11 April 2017 (UTC)

But there is an inconsistently involved with the league/division column. In the case of Wayne Rooney's article, there is no league/division column at all. There are player articles that use rowspan for division/league column. Therefore one can argue that there is really no consensus on the topic. So, I think WP:Football needs to take a firm decision on this. Kingjeff (talk) 02:42, 12 April 2017 (UTC)

Can we get some input in resolving an edit dispute?

Hello, I take your point entirely about the redirect. I just felt it was marginally more appropriate to point towards an article dealing specifically with positions. I looked at the redirects to Formation (association football) and that was the only one I could see that was a position rather than a formation. As you say, he problem is that there isn't really any article at present that covers the topic satisfactorily. This probably needs wider discussion at the project page, really. NFT.com "sourcing"

Hi there STRUWAY, longtime no "see" (AL, without an account),

regarding your "wiki-beef" with this user seen here (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User_talk:DasGermanMoses#May_2017), the Joaquim Alberto Silva is a shining example of the user's shortcomings (since it's the first example i see of what you accuse him of). Both FORADEJOGO and NFT.com say he has 36 caps and seven goals, i don't know where did the user "get" those two extra caps/goals.

I am going to work extensively on the article tonight (or early tomorrow), but what is your advice? Do we keep the chart or not, given that it "promises" one thing then "offers" another? If so, i have no problem reverting myself. Cheers, continue the good work --85.242.133.151 (talk) 20:50, 22 May 2017 (UTC)

  • Not the same topic, at all, but to keep it tidy i'll write it here: just moved the page of several players nicknamed Carlitos, and as in the last WP:FOOTY where you interacted with me, can you please have a look at the external links? Most seem to have crashed due to the move(s), beats me why :(

Thanks in advance, cheers and happy weekend --Quite A Character (talk) 14:43, 9 June 2017 (UTC)

  • I have been fixing them myself, it's just i had to reinstate the ID number in order to do so, when a bot had already performed the task of removing them. Hopefully, it will be no incovenience (that, or the bot will just remove them again and problem fixed). --Quite A Character (talk) 15:48, 9 June 2017 (UTC)
Matthew hk told you what the problem was last time. Those links are handled at Wikidata, and it takes time for that system to become aware of the page move. Career stats tables

Hi. Thanks for your constructive advice on referencing football stats. Had (slowly) been realising the limitations myself. Will use correct soccerway ref from now on, cheers.

If you have the time, there are one or two other questions. ="x" or =x What's the difference? If there's no difference, why do so many people use the quotes?

No difference, AFAIK. Possibly a legacy issue: I'm no expert on HTML markup of years gone by, or how closely the implementation of wiki-markup followed it, but it could be that the quotes were required in the past and no longer are.

If there's no difference, why change either way?

Personal prejudice taste? Or consistency, if usage differs within the same table.

Is there a real problem with using {{fb team}} template? Seems easy; which is suspicious in itself!

When you want to refer to a template without calling it, use the markup [[Template:fb team]] or {{tlx|fb team}}, both of which generate something readable: Template:fb team or {{fb team}}.

There have been umpteen instances of consensus to get rid of the fb team templates – search for "fb team" via the "search archives" box on WT:FOOTY – because they add little and clutter the pages they're used in with template calls, which can cause loading and execution issues in large pages. Nobody's actually done the work involved yet, but it could still happen... As to ease, it's actually easier IMO to just copypaste the link from elsewhere in the article.

Why do many tables (including the one in the guideline) use vcentre at the beginning of cells when the whole table is centered?

Again, possibly a legacy issue. Perhaps browser defaults used to differ. Or wiki implementation used to default to something else. Dunno.

If you are interested...

...as you interacted with the user mentioned here for quite some time, maybe you can have a look at this (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User_talk:Drmies#Nicol.C3.A1s_Pareja). As you can clearly see, an admin there concurred that the overdetail is just (STILL) humungous. Level of English? "Upon joining the club, he hope he can stay at Sevilla for the long time"...

Same old, same old, i am afraid! Cheers --Quite A Character (talk) 20:33, 17 July 2017 (UTC)

Overdetail doesn't bother me: it's easier to trim down excess detail than it is to expand a minimalist article with little useful content. And mistakes in English can be corrected by anyone with a will to do it: he's not possessive about what he writes, though it'd be good if he took more time to read over his work before saving it.
But if he's creating content that isn't backed up by reliable sources, or using unreliable sources or sources in languages he doesn't understand, that's quite another matter. We're supposed to take the WP:BLP policy seriously, and if he's making mistakes with articles about living people because he can't tell the difference between reliable and unreliable sources or he's guessing what his sources say, then that's what you should be reminding him of. cheers, Struway2 (talk) 21:32, 17 July 2017 (UTC)
Indeed, i have referred to that bit in User:Drmies' page. His "I do admit I only look for "Pareja" name in this article to use it as my source" reply, albeit not fully understood by me, seems to relate to that: let's write some stuff in this or that section, and if the name (in this case) Pareja appears in the internet source, we're good to go! A bit worrying, to say the least methinks...
Repeating to you what i told the admin: like so many times in the past, i was a "little too much" trigger-happy and rolledback upon seeing it was him. I took it upon myself to reinstate some of the content, article now stands at a respectable 50 sources. Mr. Timmy, from what i see, still thinks that mentioning ALL the injuries (even two or three-week ones), ALL the goals and ALL the suspensions is noteworthy.
Cheers, until some other wiki-time --Quite A Character (talk) 21:55, 17 July 2017 (UTC)
Words of advice fell on deaf ears, as seen on Lars Unnerstall (and level of English still displayed in sentences like "Unnerstall have since become the first choice goalkeeper, even Hildebrand made a recovery"). Shame... --Quite A Character (talk) 09:57, 19 July 2017 (UTC)
You do know that most of his additions to Unnerstall were 1) to add sources to a swathe of almost completely unsourced content in the Schalke section; and 2) to expand (not disproportionately, in my view) the totally inadequate remaining sections? That looks pretty constructive to me. Have you spotted anything where the sources don't back up the cited content? I'm afraid I haven't got time to go through it. cheers, Struway2 (talk) 11:31, 19 July 2017 (UTC)
  • Nope, like yourself I only had a quick glance, but I politely disagree that is was not disproportionate, overdetailed in my opinion but not like in Pareja (and his improvements in the Schalke section were very good overall). His level of English continues to worry me, and although I concur with you some can always be copyedited, in cases like in Pareja ("Pareja is of an English descent and learned English while in school. He also revealed that he "took my first football steps in our ward, where he played with the neighbourhood small team.", I had to ask a Dutch user to see what did that mean, only to: 1 - have the content completely and fortunately rewritten; 2 - find out that Mr. Timmy used it as a source for that "info" because article had the word "Pareja" in it!) it's very hard if not impossible.

Cheers, thanks for your input. --Quite A Character (talk) 11:51, 19 July 2017 (UTC)

  • I have now read Mr. Unnerstall's article with a "vigilant eye", so to speak. Almost nothing is OK with that article in my opinion (the English level has not improved from when we first met the user back in 2014 or 2015, it has "de-proved" if you will, what on earth is this ("His performance at Aarau attracted interests from Basel, who seek him a potential replacement for Yann Sommer")?!), constant mention to small injuries still there, constant mention to him losing his first-choice status to Timo Hildebrand when ONCE would have been enough.

Note: i have notified Timmy of this thread, cheers! --Quite A Character (talk) 20:43, 19 July 2017 (UTC)

  • Sorry for yet another "intrusion" in Míchel (footballer, born 1985)'s page, I was only trying to create new paragraphs in Getafe/Qarabag's sub-sections as they corresponded to: 1 - his overall spell at the former; 2 - his new season at the latter. I admit I did not fully understand (technically) your reply in the edit summary, but be it as it may the page stays as currently (note: I only saw now you did not revert completely my Qarabag adjustmens, only replaced "Míchel" with "he"; I thought "Míchel" would be better to kickstart a new paragraph, but oh, well, can't have everything :)).

Timmy96 has responded in his talkpage. 1) He's BRITISH, go figure; 2) again, I did not fully grasp what his reply is trying to convey, and the "I'm not perfect like you or other WP users" bit really threw me off! If you'd like to add something there, please do so...

Collapsible tables

Hey, I do not understand why. After all, when they are sorted the page is more legible and faster to load. There are many pages on the page that are curling up and I do not see anyone changing it. I think you will get a sentence. Let's make the pages more legible and transparent, do not clutter them. eemiratess (talk) 10:31, 6 August 2017 (UTC)

Quietly, these sources, which were by yourself, is not a problem. I'll do it in 30 minutes. The problem is that you do not use the developed tabs, as they look more aesthetically, let's make wikipedia develop towards minimalism and a lot of ease on the page.

And you think that displaying 20 goals on one web page covering the entire screen looks good? Please, please dress up a little empathy and understanding. Let us not be more official from officials. And if you can write it on your website.

BTW. Why did you delete Mirko Vucinic? You wanted a source for information, so I added it.

Do not distinguish yourself as possible on the following pages?

After all, the reader has access to the articles, because I do nothing with the web page, as opposed to you do not delete.

Why are tables not simply rolled during loading? After all, not everyone must be interested in, if someone wants to eat unwrapped, which in this is complicated?

Aha and there are many football players who have rolled up goal information, why did not you remove it since it is illegal? Either delete everything or nothing. Hold on to the rules of fair play, because I see that not all of you treat the user equally.

I'm sorry that you are removing my work without a reception, where is democracy?eemiratess (talk) 13:09, 6 August 2017 (UTC)

Diego Costa

Hello, I made this edit a while back but I've noticed he is Spanish and Brazilian, should it say Spanish or say something else? Kind regards ChocolateRabbit 16:41, 14 August 2017 (UTC)

@ChocolateRabbit: Think it was correct before your edit: i.e. without any nationality. Standard practice for players who have played for more than one country internationally, or whose country of birth differs from the country they represent, is to leave the opening sentence without a nationality and to explain the situation lower down the lead section. Which in the case of Mr Costa is done quite clearly in the third para. cheers, Struway2 (talk) 17:04, 14 August 2017 (UTC)

Hi there, long time no "see",

regarding your edit here: yes, i am fully aware of the WP:OPENPARA guideline, but bear with me, it's very possible that this article will be nothing more than what it is now (a pretty infobox with some links that people can consult), given the difficulty (impossibility?) of finding refs for players of this era (at least in Portugal, unless you were a top player, Mr. Fernandes was not).

In that case, why not leave the birth place details in the intro? You might reply "Because it's already in the infobox". Fair enough, but if one could add the region/province to go along the city/village that would add for extra geographical detail. What's your intake on this?

Please note: i have not re-inserted anything since you reverted me, only typing this friendly message. Cheers, happy weekend/editing --Quite A Character (talk) 22:41, 15 September 2017 (UTC)

  • I know, it's just i am very averse to using mere links with stats as references, unless it's for the statistics of charts (other than the infobox, the ones we find below), and i'm not going to write a storyline without any reliable sources, for that i prefer to leave just the box. Regarding Mr. Leal, no excuse there for a user of my experience, and the outburst? After a full day of putting up with this crap (please see here https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Administrators%27_noticeboard/Edit_warring#User:Quite_A_Character_reported_by_User:109.180.164.62_.28Result:_No_block..29, and their talkpage is also to die for), i was absolutely seething! Of course, you could say "And what about the outbursts in summaries when you HAVE NOT BEEN harrassed previously?". I guess i'd have to reply "You win" :)

Attentively --Quite A Character (talk) 14:29, 16 September 2017 (UTC)

  • Got it, and here comes a genuine reply: I should have mentioned it in the summary, but I just thought the ref could stay because it added additional info regarding their relationship, provided the reader(s) understood Albanian. The fact the source added a different date should be a minor issue in the light of the new ref you aptly added, methinks.

However, given you are a much better editor than me regarding technicalities (not being condescending here, not one bit), and since I have tremendous respect for that and your overall work, I will now remove the ref if/since you feel it adds nothing further/could potentially mislead.

Cheers back, sorry for any inconvenience --Quite A Character (talk) 09:01, 18 September 2017 (UTC)

  • Perhaps I used the word ("technicality") poorly. I repeat, your source is much better than the previous one, but if it was up to me the whole section would not even be there (he married "some" woman, what's notable about that?), but User:Mattythewhite told me it's customary to "...include brief details of subjects' spouses" (verbatim).

Heanor Town/Athletic

Hello Struway. I noticed that here you linked Heanor Athletic to Heanor Town F.C., and I was just wondering whether you had any evidence they are the same club? I've just been doing some research to rewrite the club history, and they do look to possibly be the same club (looking at the timeline of the Central Alliance, Town replace Athletic in the league in 1953), but the club's website claims that they were in the Notts Alliance prior to replacing Athletic in the league. Having said that, the club website does not appear to be a reliable source as they claim some honours that they patently did not win according to sources like the FCHD... Career stats tables

Penny for your thoughts. Do you think it would be best to use footnotes in the National Cup and League Cup columns, in the same way they're commonly used in Europe and Other? Came to mind when doing a career stats table for a player who's played in three different national cup competitions. Also made me wonder if it's correct to write FA Cup and League Cup (linked specifically to EFL Cup) in the column headings for players who've played solely in England. It isn't recommended by the Player MoS, and only works because they happily fit in the heading without stretching the columns. Thanks, Mattythewhite (talk) 19:29, 7 November 2017 (UTC)

That's football I suppose. Silver lining, the money can go towards building *that* roof...
I'd probably agree re using specific names for cups, best to avoid trying fix something that isn't broken. So do you think it would be better to add a footnote to the column heading, as opposed to the appearances cells, which I tried out at Sead Kolašinac? Grammar doubt

Hi there,

a little hand please, if you can lend it to kickstart the year in "all-scholastic neatness": having just edited Adrien Silva's article, i noticed this revision (please see here https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Adrien_Silva&diff=next&oldid=818071490). Shouldn't it be "at FIFA", or am i missing something?

Cheers, thanks in advance and happy 2018 from Portugal --Quite A Character (talk) 20:15, 1 January 2018 (UTC)

@Quite A Character: I've anglicised it a bit. "Arrived with" is better than "arrived at", because "FIFA" is being used to mean "the relevant FIFA employees", and you wouldn't say "arrived at FIFA's employees", but (IMO) "reached" is better than either. cheers, Struway2 (talk) 09:33, 2 January 2018 (UTC)

Hi mate, thanks for the comment on the Harry Roberts article. This has all been changed now. I've just noticed that the Argyle OS actually links to GoS on their nav menu so if they trust them that should be good enough for us.

I've just spotted a similar issue with Harry Cann (he cropped up in a list of WHU wartime guests. I'm not following you, honest!). I've reverted a load of unsourced info about his death. Whether true or not, I don't think we can include info based only on someone saying they've seen a death cert. Those details don't appear on GoS. The other complication is that the 2012 edition of Joyce has now changed the DoB, to 31 March 1905. Only two days out from us and GoS! I've added this to the note. Do you think that's OK? Cheers, Nzd (talk) 23:53, 7 January 2018 (UTC)

@Nzd: Struway2 (talk) 16:15, 8 January 2018 (UTC)
The note's fine by me, as is your reasoning. However, the GRO index has 31 March 1905 date of birth for a Harry Cann whose death was registered in q2 1968 in the Camelford district of Cornwall – see FreeBMD – and there's only one Harry Cann whose birth was registered in 1905. Which probably makes Joyce's date more reliable than GoS, in this case. Does Joyce 2012 give a year of death? cheers, Struway2 (talk) 16:11, 8 January 2018 (UTC)
Actually, yeah, it has 1980 but no specific date. Not sure how I missed that before. That's interesting about the FreeBMD date, thanks for looking that up. I think we go with Joyce then, at least for now. On that basis, the note is probably not necessary so I've removed it. Feel free to add something else in if you feel any clarification is needed though. Cheers, Nzd (talk) 17:36, 8 January 2018 (UTC)

Hi, it's always great for editors to check to see if the InternetArchiveBot modifies dead links to archive urls, and also seeing if there are any that exist that IABot thinks it's permanently dead, such as the one on Gianfranco Zola. Iggy (Swan) 21:55, 23 January 2018 (UTC)

I didn't understand your anti-flag edit there, it was much neater before your edit and under WP:MOSFLAG it's allowed in a list like that. Govvy (talk) 12:31, 24 January 2018 (UTC)

Video Game Characters

Hi, Do you know any where I can find a reliable source for the age(s) of video game characters? Specifically Grand Theft Auto V?

Regards -- 🐇 ChocolateRabbit 22:39, 27 January 2018 (UTC)

@ChocolateRabbit: No idea. Try WP:WikiProject Video games. cheers, Struway2 (talk) 08:44, 28 January 2018 (UTC)

Thanks for your recent edits. You don't need to apologise if you have undone any of my meagre attempts to tidy up the previous editor's work. I know that if the article is in your capable hands it will be well looked after. Best wishes. 78.147.174.226 (talk) 18:12, 2 February 2018 (UTC)

I do not know what is currently wrong with the new template. Iggy (Swan) 22:08, 8 February 2018 (UTC)

@Iggy the Swan: If you subst it,
{{subst:Soccer club stats|1|2007–2012|[[Arsenal F.C.|Arsenal]]|3|0}}
it'll work, although it leaves the resultant infobox parameters full of whitespace. But if the object is to make stats updating easier, I imagine substing it would be a waste of effort. cheers, Struway2 (talk) 07:47, 9 February 2018 (UTC)
I would say so too, leaving it the way it is would be better for everyone. Iggy (Swan) 08:19, 9 February 2018 (UTC)

I should have checked carefully (Wallace & Gromit)

before doing that to Wallace & Gromit. A valid revert, brain not in full gear. Iggy (Swan) 10:46, 18 February 2018 (UTC)

Hi there,

regarding this edit/edit summary of mine (please see here https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Ricardo_Janota&diff=774276522&oldid=773803722) and your subsequent one, my reasoning was that he had been (as this season) the backup at C.D. Tondela and the starter had been sent off the previous matchday. That being said, I engaged in WP:CRYSTAL so the edit was not proper, I admit it.

Cheers, sorry for any inconvenience (PS. I just added an external link with his official Portuguese Football Federation data, don't know if you wish to relocate it as a ref) --Quite A Character (talk) 13:27, 21 February 2018 (UTC)

@Quite A Character: Thank you for the FPF link. Foradejogo has updated to the same numbers as the FPF since I last used it. What I also see is that both sites display counts of 4 U19 and 9 U17 caps, but in the lists of matches played in, FPF has 2 U19 and 8 U17 matches and Foradejogo has 3 U19 and 7 U17. Whatever... I'll change the infobox figures to match the counts as displayed and replace the cited source with the FPF page.
Mr Janota's lost his place on the bench to Ricardo Moura now, so I'm guessing he'll be off when his contract runs out at the end of the season. cheers, Struway2 (talk) 14:20, 21 February 2018 (UTC)

FORADEJOGO often is "offside" regarding the youth caps of current players, sometimes they have already made their under-21 debut long ago (i.e. Diogo Dalot) and not even the under-20s are reflected in their page. Thus, FPF.pt is your choice in this department (but you are correct in that assessment however, sometimes FPF does not show all the matches even though the caps are correct, whereas FDJ does the exact opposite. Dear lord, the holy confusion...). Cheers back! --Quite A Character (talk) 14:50, 21 February 2018 (UTC)

Possible sockpuppet?

Hi Struway2, do you possibly think that the user Petermack18 may be a sockpuppet of AH999 - the name is very similar to the name Peter18Mack, except the number is moved to the end and the 'm' is not capitalised. The contributions found contain some of the same pages as one another, mainly in the category of Scottish football. Also the timing of the contributions made by both users do not overlap each other which might mean there could be block evasion. See what your verdict is on that. Iggy (Swan) 17:29, 27 February 2018 (UTC)

@Iggy the Swan: It appears to be the same editor as Peter18Mack, which means that editor is block evading. cheers, Struway2 (talk) 18:17, 27 February 2018 (UTC)
We've given the user enough WP:ROPE - the man has been hanged and it may be over soon. Iggy (Swan) 18:23, 27 February 2018 (UTC)

Hi

Hi, per my comment and explanation, may you remove your request of CSDG4, as it is clearly not admissible per my explanation. Thank you and best regards fr. / Avaay (talk) 22:21, 10 March 2018 (UTC)

Hello

Hi mate, how are you. I looked into your answer, and mate I think you're a little bit off, may I ask you to answer the subject is accepted through GNG? I am not asking you for a favor, rather I'll explain to you why so that you can with ethics change your answer. The subject in the matter is an icon for Ethiopian football, he's been in Ethiopian radios, following with his words in an interview appearing in EBC TV which is the central and government TV channel of Ethiopia. DireTube as well is not close to a blog, or routine page but Ethiopia's biggest platform where over 200 people actually commented on the subject and he was spoken about in a highly matter showing very high coverage. I don't want to become a hypocrite and saying that it would be hypocritical to delete this subject when we accept thai-players who has only played 1 or 2 games in the league but sources are fully or almost over fully not reliable, it might as well been a page created and edited by someone... You understand my point mate? All in all, I knew you considered GNG and I sent you this so that you could hopefully if nice change you answer, he is very suited for note via GNG, and for ethics sake for you to change your answer he's suited via following:"Significant coverage" addresses the topic directly and in detail, so that no original research is needed to extract the content. Significant coverage is more than a trivial mention, but it does not need to be the main topic of the source material., <-- he has been in an exclusive interview with what I know two Swedish newspapers (or could be more I only know 2) who wrote him in the first page with a fully page on only him, he had a full interview in radio that many small Ethiopian TV channels broadcasted and the major EBC TV aswell... I am counting on you pal and I have now giving you reason to change your answer, think of it as a favor to me but with ethics as well... and by the way may you note that it dosn't matter if he fails WP:FOOTY if he's acceptable to GNG which he is to the person who was against it in the discussion, if you want I can send you puctures of him in the magazine and at 11:13 January4 he was recorded in Aftonbladet silly season notice and he blew in swedish-football community where everyone talked about him, and about a week ago he was in radio where he himself admitted that a possible move is in the coming months... again GNG is via ethiopia and his adimre alongside EFF-president who spoke so highly of him. Thank my friend, I hope you see this and change your answer, your best/Avaay (talk)

  • Your answer is incorrect my friend, in Sweden he has been in magazine with them being the first primary source, not some website called o-post, that is irrelevant. A flipping football president said he ist he future star! and he has nor might play but he has been called up and contacted by the FA says swedish newspapers.....Avaay (talk)
  • Hi, per my vote can you please change your answer, I need all help I can and if you could be geniun to help me and change your vote to a keep. After all he is via WP:GNG accepted for a note... Avaay (talk) —Preceding undated comment added 12:38, 11 March 2018 (UTC)

Ademola Lookman update reverted

Where were you when someone updated stats under the player picture but the main stats table was not updated? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Partheshmittal (talkcontribs) 11:05, 12 March 2018 (UTC)

Im sorry if i sounded rude or sth, i'll take care for the updates in future. Doug Taft

Not sure how the old retained lists worked, but surely if he left the club in 1950 then that should be the date in the infobox? Retaining the rights to the player in a certain jurisdiction (I'm thinking of the modern example of MLS) does not affect you playing elsewhere... GiantSnowman 12:33, 15 March 2018 (UTC)

InternetArchiveBot

Hi, it's a good job to replace dead urls (such as this one, I am a bit surprised that the bot does not post on the article's talk page as I find it better to access the links from there rather than copy and paste into the search bars. Also we can't verify to see whether editors have checked them or not as we have done so in the past. Iggy (Swan) 22:15, 17 March 2018 (UTC)

Possible sockpuppet2?

Hi, what do you think about this so far - there may be two suspects to this - AH999 (which two of the socks contains 'Mack' in their usernames) and PenguinsElite (CamelCase, football articles etc.). This may have to wait for a bit longer so there is more information as to whether the linked contributions is a block evader or not. Iggy (Swan) 18:59, 14 March 2018 (UTC)

@Iggy the Swan: It's either the same editor as the PeterMacks, or someone pretending to be, or some innocent editor trying to update stats, not very well. Whether that makes them AH999, PenguinsElite, both, someone else playing a different game, or an innocent good-faith editor, I'm not competent to say. cheers, Struway2 (talk) 12:12, 15 March 2018 (UTC)
I'll leave it for now and see what happens within a week or two. Iggy (Swan) 14:22, 15 March 2018 (UTC)
A few more edits have been made from ScalpayMack which has given me a clue or two as to whether that is a sockpuppet or not - since 19 March, they have edited only Ross County F.C. articles, such as the current season and three players who have played/currently contracted to that club. Sometimes the Editor Interaction Analyser from the sockpuppet investigation cases helps - Peter18Mack & ScalpayMack have edited nine mutual pages, Petermack18 & ScalpayMack just five, and PenguinsElite & ScalpayMack none. Also from these links, all the blue numbers came from the same column (the one who edited the page first). After you look at these, you may probably agree with me that my suspicion of ScalpayMack being a sockpuppet is correct only a week ago, and the account belongs to the person who operated AH999. Cheers, Iggy (Swan) 18:54, 21 March 2018 (UTC)
@Iggy the Swan: If you want to report them, then do it. My reply remains the same. cheers, Struway2 (talk) 19:30, 21 March 2018 (UTC)
Done. Iggy (Swan) 19:40, 21 March 2018 (UTC)
This has now been confirmed as an AH999 sockpuppet and this discussion is done. Iggy (Swan) 20:02, 21 March 2018 (UTC)

Newspaper archives

Hey Stru, where is it that you get your newspaper archived reports from and how do I access them? Thanks.--EchetusXe 12:25, 22 March 2018 (UTC)

Two things

Hi, there are two things I would like you to know about the last two edits you've made:-

1. I have posted on the talk page as to the correct statistics on Roger Johnson (footballer), that Soccerway and Soccerbase have both listed 11 appearances (as of 26 March), we can certainly accept 12 League appearances as correct (or correct way, Non-League.

2. On Jesse Lingard, I'm not sure how I have managed to do a duplicate section - what I remember is that I clicked the back button on the browser a couple of times to correct a red link of his cousin's name (wrong spelling). That possibly introduced the accidental duplicate. That won't happen again, especially to this one.

Thanks, Iggy (Swan) 14:39, 26 March 2018 (UTC)

IPv6 range is back

I have noticed that you made a range block request here which was blocked for a week. After that block has expired, 2A00:23C5:4690:7A00:740A:E4CE:7FF4:A9F5 has edited height changes again. Thankfully, in my case, three of those edits are on my watchlist so I reverted and the incorrect info doesn't get on there for long. Iggy (Swan) 15:11, 5 April 2018 (UTC)

@Iggy the Swan: Thank you. I've given that IP address a final warning and when someone spots them again, hopefully we can get the range block put back. cheers, Struway2 (talk) 15:29, 5 April 2018 (UTC)

Archived refs

Hi there,

regarding the subject, what happened was the following: the first time i had to arrange the fields of such a source (written manually but in its archived form), i did not know which stuff to insert in the "url" field. I chose to insert the archived form for OBVIOUS reasons (it was the one that was working, LOL!) and it seemed fine to me; which leads to the question: in what technical wrongdoing am i incurring in if the ref displayed fine before and after your arrangements? Just trying to learn, but i think with just following your versions after my (supposedly wrong) edits i'll eventually get the hang of it :)

Thanks for the headsup (although it would been preferable if you came to my talkpage instead of the edit summaries), cheers --Quite A Character (talk) 18:53, 9 April 2018 (UTC)

  • Let's see if I learned my lesson well: Diego Perotti, I tended to refs #6 and #13, both from Sevilla FC's official website. I think the work would have been sufficient enough to be considered an improvement but, after copying/adjusting them in exactly the same way, I find that the former source still has a problem in the original accessdate... HELP, por favor! --Quite A Character (talk) 10:22, 11 April 2018 (UTC)

Again, what can I say about my summary? Often, I'm only embarrassing myself :( Quick question: what about if I add FORADEJOGO as a source? Will the change be acceptable then? Awaiting reply so that I can do something of worth "to go" with my rants, cheers --Quite A Character (talk) 10:45, 16 April 2018 (UTC)

  • I already stated it in the summary (with the habitual and needless histericals, one must add), I believe Portuguese stats for a Portuguese player must trump all the other sources (especially if the source is reliable enough for this encyclopedia, as FORADEJOGO seems to be), and said site gives him two goals and not three; on a related note, ZEROZERO (not reliable, but also Portuguese) also says Mr. Miranda scored twice and not thrice that season (please see here https://www.thefinalball.com/player.php?id=74724&epoca_id=146); is this reasoning solid enough? Anyway, I see that you have not reverted me still, so I just went on and added FDJ to the chart (but kept SW and SB, of course!), feel free to revert/adjust if you something is not "up to par".

Cheers, sorry for any inconvenience --Quite A Character (talk) 11:12, 16 April 2018 (UTC)

  • Say no more sir, say no more... The arguments you presented at my talk were quite sufficient, I did the pertinent adjustments in box/storyline and, per your suggestion, reinstated former chart+FORADEJOGO as a ref. Cheerio, thank you very much for your assistance! --Quite A Character (talk) 12:32, 16 April 2018 (UTC)

R. Oliveira - Reply

Duly noted! Just thought of it now: ALWAYS speaking of reliable sources (in this case, for the subject's NT data in the chart below), what about if i find one that specifically says he has 15 caps/5 goals and four newspaper articles with his five goals - he scored a brace in one of the matches)? Will NFT be allowed to remain solely as a link then?

Thanks for the assistance, cheers --Quite A Character (talk) 21:59, 23 April 2018 (UTC)

  • Again, thanks for the explanation(s) (funny that I need such a schooling now and then as a 12-year veteran, but I DO). Interesting (and logical, if you waste ten seconds thinking about it) that foreign sources are always trumped by the English-speaking ones, but sometimes (not in this case of course, NFT.com is reliable and is used as such, be it as an inline reference or an external link) you'll agree they are nearly impossible to find (if not at all).

Cheers, take care --Quite A Character (talk) 08:58, 24 April 2018 (UTC)

Hey, you think there is any chance to get my old account back? Had an old mail adress here listed which does not work anymore but i requested a new one sent to my actual adress, but of course it never came. Kante44 (talk) 07:36, 5 May 2018 (UTC)

Tried the old one already. Won't work, i think because i requested a new one? But thanks of course. :) I asked at the teahouse. Never thought about changing the mail adress to the new one somehow... Kante44 (talk) 08:48, 5 May 2018 (UTC)
Got it done. Bit of a crazy story. :D The old mail adress was so old that i was allowed to register it again and got a new password. Kante4 (talk) 15:16, 5 May 2018 (UTC)
