Fannie Mae Ward Birckhead

Note- no rush or action required on this. I can see you are busy working on GA nominations. I came across Fannie Mae Ward Birckhead (1935-2022) when writing an article on her daughter, Janeen L. Birckhead. Her bio here [8] summarizes her accomplishments as the first Black woman to hold many positions including mayor and local judge. I found some articles: [9][10][11][12][13][14][15][16]. I am not sure that she meets GNG because she was a local politician and judge and all of these articles are in one local newspaper. Yes, TJMSmith crazy busy right now. Don't write her as a politician. She clearly meets anybio, and was an activist who happened to go into politics. She was part of a federal lawsuit about voting rights, [17]. You'll need to figure out the outcome, but I note in several of the pieces you already have that she was involved in voter registration, i.e. look for clues in the NAACP registration drives after passage of the 1964 Voting Rights Act. This book talks about her. My newspaperarchive.com account isn't working but Gettysburg Times also has an article, which I also found here. (I was hoping the Afro-American from Baltimore would have coverage, but can't access without newspaperarcive.com). Hope that helps. Swing back around if you need more. Thanks for sharing that comment. This general idea has come up in other related discussions (not necessarily having anything to do with women, but with identity) and I was wondering if you could help me understand it. As a man, I don’t have the same idea or belief, but I do acknowledge that other men do. My question is this: in a better world that I can imagine (not this real world), where you were treated differently, where you had every opportunity and access that men do, and where there was no discrimination against women in any sphere (again, not this world, but a more perfect world that we can imagine), would you still feel the same way? Viriditas, it seems unlikely because my experiences would have been different. This is an intellectual question that my friends and chosen family have discussed for years. To answer the question one must strip down their identity to the single characteristic that most shaped or defined "who you are" and "how you view the world". The answer seems to be often related to the constraints or lack of opportunities that continuously present challenges to just being who you are, if that make sense. While on the surface, it seems logical that if equity existed the challenges would vanish, that might not hold true. For example, if one considers say age, even if equal opportunities existed, one might not have the ability. It's late, I'm rambling. SusunW (talk) 05:48, 23 July 2023 (UTC)

FAC for shorter biographies

Hi, SusunW -- I hope you're well. I was reading back over the GAN for Elizabeth Maitland, Duchess of Lauderdale while reviewing it at FAC, and saw your replies to Christie and the nominator about nominating shorter biographical FACs. I'm looking towards a potential FAC for Elisabeth Geleerd, which is about ~1400 words at present (expanded ~250 post-GAN). If you have the time, do you have any thoughts or comments on the article? I'm not rushing to FAC -- I have another article to FAC first, and it's still waiting at GAN -- but as someone who myself is hesitant about shorter articles and quality-review processes, and mostly writes non-biographical articles, I'd be interested in any of your expertise. Fascinating woman (I often write about immigrant women and find it interesting that so many women immigrated for more opportunity and to avoid political situations.) Very well written. I made a very few minor copy edits, mostly to reduce repetition. Two observations: 1) three-pronged portrait of autistic seems as if it should be schizophrenic, as a few sentences above it states that the modern term is autism. 2) What is her legacy? Is her work still used, was it later deemed foundational or disregarded? Because I am curious, although possibly it isn't necessary to state in the article, what was her chronic illness? Thank you! #1 is an interesting clarity note/"thing I'm too close to the subject to have realized" I'll probably need to footnote, given it might take up too much space in the text -- "autism" was a commonly used term even before it was a diagnosis at all, let alone before it was a common one, and Geleerd and her contemporaries were certainly familiar with "autistic behaviours of schizophrenic children" and similar terms. #2 is tricky for psychoanalysts in general given the whole field fell out of favour, but I'll search more for later analyses of her work past the continued work on borderline children. I never did find much information about her illness, and it seems not all her contemporaries may have known (Tartakoff refers to it, but another source says she died "unexpectedly"). It happens in a lot of scientific fields when new discoveries are made that change the trajectory. Sorry, been really busy both here an in real life. I don't see any glaring errors in Hemsy. Fascinating read. I love her philosophy, music isn't necessary to sustain life, but life would be less without it, for sure! How you find history on WP, I will never know. Our search engines are horrible and I can rarely find what I want to find. Loved the exchange on Frank Stähle, although I must say am not remotely sure that I live to learn to die. Thank you for all that. She's on the Main page! The "learn to die" was in the context of the works on the program, and we'll do Mozart's Requiem again this year! He was a man who lived ;) - After rehearsals - twice a week because one group rehearsed in Geisenheim and one in Wiesbaden - he always went out afterwards, and after that took a singer home who lived in Mainz, quite a distance (Wiesbaden group only). Trying to find a place for her in the GA list wasn't so easy, and I'm not totally happy with where I put her. Do you think it would be worth to start a listing of "woman's rights activists" or similar? It could combine some people listed as educators, sociologists, or as figures of world history like some suffragettes. Kusma, I have this challenge all of the time. I can never figure out how to nominate them, so I usually just dump them into "Culture, sociology and psychology" with a note like "who knows what subtopic: teacher, writer, activist, musician, philanthropist...can't be put neatly in a box". I have complained for years that our topics don't fit the areas in which women were allowed to participate, but no one has ever even replied or given an inkling that they understand the issue, except Mujinga, who told me in a review they have the same problem. Rarely was their notability in a "field" and a whole lot of what they did was political, but they weren't politicians. Short of dumping them into "world history" or "Culture, sociology and psychology" it's a crap shoot. I would love to have "community and social workers" for the women who did mostly philanthropic work and "women's rights activists" for the women whose work was political, but I just don't know how to get anyone to hear me.
