I think that page is itself ambiguous. Do you not take any external validation into account like internal links or Google hits? Your recent move of "That's All" showed a similar lack of foresight. So many jazz standards have albums and songs named after them, that is why they should serve as the primary topic. They shouldn't be ranked alongside non notable songs as equal. The Genesis song That's All (Genesis song) is hardly non-notable. In fact it is gets more hits than the "standard", ~9000 versus ~5100 over the last 3 months. Very much like the other moves. We have two articles on songs Come Fly with Me (song) and Come Fly with Me (Foxy Brown song). Disambiguating with just (song) isn't enough, it is still ambiguous. It's obvious that the first is much more notable so in line with the move of Thriller (album) to Thriller (Michael Jackson album) I haven't redirected Come Fly with Me (song) back to Come Fly with Me but left it redirecting to Come Fly with Me (1957 song). Unlike the song "Witchcraft" I think there might be a case for moving the song to Come Fly with Me as it could be regarded as the WP:PRIMARYTOPIC. Tassedethe (talk) 18:13, 2 September 2013 (UTC)

I see you have moved countless articles about books to "Title ("insert last name of author here" novel). I haven't encounted this form of article naming before, and in none of the instances I've got on my watch list is there any competing articles with similarly named novels which could be confused by the current existing one. Questioning edits to Larry Miller

I'm not quite sure of the logic behind the changes in [/w/index.php?title=Larry_Miller&diff=567160102&oldid=567101589 this revision].

There are three:

1. Adding the final comma in "Larry H. Miller (1944–2009), American businessman, owner of the Utah Jazz, 1985–2009". Er... I don't think that comma should be there. Since it's an abbreviation of "owner of the Utah Jazz from 1985–2009", which doesn't take a comma, I think it's more readable without.
2. Changing "Laurence "Larry" Miller (guitarist)" to "Larry Miller (guitarist)". This reverted my change to the former, which I thought was more informative without being overly verbose. I'm willing to be enlightened; can you explain why one form is preferred?
3. Changing a hyphen to a dash in a comment. Yup, that's an improvement. I was lazy in the comment.

1. I like the comma, it clarifies that the entity is the "Utah Jazz" not the "Utah Jazz 1985–2009", cf BSC Kickers 1900 etc. However I'm not going to demand it remain. 2. 1. Huh. To me, the comma makes it part of the list, as in

• owner of the Utah Jazz
• 1985–2009

which is hard to understand. If you like the comma, maybe change the preceding one to a semicolon? I'm tempted to put it in parentheses, but I worry about the similarity to birth/death years.

2. Um, if I want to get legalistic, it also says "Articles only listing persons with a certain given name or surname, known as anthroponymy articles, are not disambiguation pages, and this Manual of Style does not apply to them."

However, I don't want to get legalistic, I want to follow the spirit. The section you quoted says, in full,

Subject to certain exceptions as listed below, piping or redirects should not be used in disambiguation pages. This is to make it clear to the reader which article is being suggested, so that the reader remains in control of the choice of article. For example, in the Moment disambiguation page, with the entry for Moment (physics), " (physics)" should be visible to the reader. In many cases, what would be hidden by a pipe is exactly what the user would need in order to find the intended article.

They're arguing against using piping to abbreviate the link name. The persistent theme is against surprising the reader or concealing information. I don't think expanding it is a problem. If you look at the WP:MOSDAB#Where_piping_may_be_appropriate section, you'll see a number of examples on the general theme of "render more accurately than the article title", which is what I was trying to do. I agree none of the examples apply to what I was doing, but I think it's in the same spirit. Do you disagree?

Yes, piping is allowed for certain reasons, expanding isn't one of them. Hiding or expanding gives a false impression to the reader. Plus, this isn't anthroponymy page as it doesn't list people with a certain given name or surname. Larry (given name) with Larry Miller, Larry Smith etc. is an anthroponymy page. Policy for changing "from" Upper Case to lower case

The sources that I've seen referring to the book The Last Train From Hiroshima show the word "From" in Upper Case. See this source in The New York Times and this one in The Washington Post for examples. Can you refer me to any policy that requires that the word "from" in a title be in lower case or provide what evidence you used to determine that the title of the article should be changed? September 2013

Hello I noticed that you had added a category to my article Marc Y Chenevert. I have been targeted by another editor that first didnt like how the copyright on my photos of the article was verified. I addressed that and they have been corrected and then he added a do not move banner to them for a watermark. Once that was all corrected he has now moved on to my article and has decided that I have some connection with the subject and when I addressed that he then added a number or tags and decided that if there were no discussion on the subject that that he would nominate the article for deletion. I think this would be a terrible loss as the subject person is very notable. Would you mind to join in on this discussion and see what you think about the issues that he LGA has brought up? Incomplete matches

   Sorry for my out-of-date insistence that putting them under "See also" sufficed, and thanks for managing to bring me up to date flame-lessly. I had been annoyed by (but grudgingly tolerated) what i think i recall as all-titles-beginning links under "See also", and perhaps i just missed the transition to the actually effective "intitle" searches which (with the aid of redirects-to-section or -anchor) i can see provide a far better solution to the "persistent boils" in the See-also sections. I'm not exactly sure but I think if you found such an article then you could add BLP PROD and the 10 day count would restart. I don't think it qualifies for any sort of speedy deletion. Disambiguation pages

Hi Tassedthe,

As I understand it, if there are two people with the same name, the more famous person takes precedence for the main name article. I tried to do this with Christopher Shannon for the fashion designer but for some reason - I don't remember what it was - trying to make the page wouldn't take. Almost the hits on Wikipedia that linked to Christopher Shannon were in reference to the current designer, while the main page was for the aviator, who was only linked from two subject-specific pages and was unlikely to be linked to from many other articles. For some reason, all I could do was turn the page into a redirect to the main C Shannon article. Anyway, it strikes me that rather than a disambiguation page for two people, the page Christopher Shannon would be better off with the fashion designer's page transferred over to it, and a hatnote for the aviator article. The only reasoning I've seen for a disambiguation page with only two entries is if both entries are equally famous or equally likely to be search terms, which I don't think applies in this instance. However, rather than undo your dab page, I thought I'd check with you first to see if the rules had changed or there was a compelling reason for a two-entry dab in this instance. Category renaming

Hi- could you point to the policy that justifies the renaming of "John Smith albums" to "John Smith (singer) albums"? It looks ugly and unnecessary to me, but if there is a guideline/policy which proscribes it, I'm happy to let it drop. J Milburn (talk) 15:00, 11 November 2013 (UTC)

Well I've had a look round and I can't find it specifically written down. Convention has been to match Category titles to Article titles, and this has lead to it becoming a Speedy criteria: D. A rename to facilitate concordance between a particular category's name and a related article's name. The rename discussion for Tool is typical of the consensus. question about category removal

Hi, I saw that you removed Category:Denis Diderot and Category:Encyclopedism from Urena lobata. Presuming it wasn't because of perceived irrelevance, as could be imagined, I'm hoping you can tell me why you removed them (and inquisitive "why?" rather than a defensive "why!"). I can't say I have much experience with categories beyond the basics and those two seem quit appropriate for the page. Is it because they're redlinks? Because they were one-item categories? Thanks for your question. The first thing is that they are redlinks i.e. those categories have not been created. Secondly the category system is meant to group articles together with a common theme. In general this means that usually there must be several articles on a subject before a category is necessary. (One item categories can be created if they fall within a established scheme e.g. Category:22 births.) For people it's rare for them to have an entire category to themselves. E.g. there is Category:William Shakespeare but not Category:Daniel Defoe, although there is Category:Works by Daniel Defoe. So for Denis Diderot there is Category:Novels by Denis Diderot and Category:Plays by Denis Diderot. Even if there was Category:Denis Diderot I don't think it would be appropriate to categorize the plant in that way. Diderot wrote about the plant but that is the extent of the connection. For comparison, you wouldn't categorize Elsinore or Verona with Category:William Shakespeare although obviously they have a strong connection to the work of Shakespeare. I hope that's clear. I guess my inclination is to err on the side of more categories. I.e. I wouldn't object to Verona being included in the Shakespeare category so long as it didn't necessitate removal from more directly related categories. If the category became cluttered I'd probably just fork a "Shakespearean geography," "cities in shakespeare," or some better worded but similar idea. I guess so long as it's relevant, not redundant, and not purely rhetorical (like including Scientology in Category:Hogwash) then I don't have a big problem with it. But that's speaking out of ignorance of category policies.

The reason I included the Diderot category to begin with isn't just because he wrote about it, which he barely did. It's an article in the Encyclopedie that's kind of a non-article. It's a commentary about the production of encyclopedias and their audience (directly). Certainly not a novel or play, and not really fit for a Category:Works by Denis Diderot either (another example whose absence boggles my mind). As such Encyclopedism seems an appropriate category, too (perhaps more so). But you're saying it's no good to just add something to a category? That someone categorizing an article also has to create the category page and ensure there are other pages with the same category (otherwise don't add it)? --— Rhododendrites ^talk |  23:54, 23 November 2013 (UTC)

Certainly the role of categories is debatable - and your view of more categories is perfectly reasonable (and I think shared by many others). Although as an aside Category:Places associated with William Shakespeare was created but deleted after a discussion.

It's actually fairly easy to create a new category (much easier than articles), all it needs is the addition of a category of its own. E.g Category:Encyclopedism probably would have Category:Encyclopedias. As with all things Wikipedia there no need to add more articles, but single article categories are more likely to get merged or deleted. You can add redlink categories, again it's Wikipedia, nobody has to follow through with category creation and population. I won't remove ones that I think seem reasonable or I know fit in with an existing scheme, but as you found I did disagree with the two you added. Yes. Disambiguation pages only have (disambiguation) in the title if there is not a "primary topic" (WP:PRIMARYTOPIC). So we have things like The Beatles with The Beatles (disambiguation) or Elvis Presley with Elvis Presley (disambiguation). But for other subjects we have disambiguation pages like From Russia with Love, Goldfinger, John Smith or Love Story. Hi, Tasse. Thanks, as always, for all your hard work. I don't know if you're aware that Template:db-disambig has been changed? Apparently, it didn't fit with speedy criteria. I clicked on the G8 link in your edit summary, and it said it was for pages ending in (disambiguation) and with fewer than two links. I think some of those you've been deleting haven't had fewer than two links. I only realised the change when I added a speedy tag and it was removed with the above reason given. I also think a lot of these aren't uncontroversial maintenance - I'm finding more than half of them have enough valid entries. Would you consider using PROD instead? Not a problem. On disambiguation pages, it's standard to keep the list of related spellings at the bottom, in the see also section. In this case there is Hans Olson and Hans Olsen. You could imagine there could also be Hans Ollsson or Hans Olssen. Then a hatnote becomes unwieldy. The layout recommendations are at MOS:DABSEEALSO. It says to use a hatnote "when appropriate". In my view that's for cases where the misspelling is highly likely to have been what the user *really* wanted. E.g. if there was a disambiguation page at Jessus then I'd expect a hatnote to Jesus. Can you explain to me what you're doing with the "Dominican Americans" category on this article? You say that its "ambiguous" - why is it any more ambiguous than "Afican-Americans in New York"? Certainly, a better cat would be "Domincan-American culture", but that cat does not exist, and the closest to it is "Dominican Americans". So, what's your rationale? It would be nice if people making decisions like this, whoever they are, had some actual practical knowledge of the subject. To say this category is "ambiguous" because of the existence of Dominica is absurd and ludicrous. It's irrelevant whether we're volunteers or paid for what we do, we still should have some amount of competency, and some knowledge about the real world, and not simply live in Wiki-fantasy Land. Whichever volunteer editor, or group of volunteer editors, was so clueless about reality that they thought "Dominican American" was an ambiguous term really shouldn't be making silly decisions such as that without knowing what they are doing - and I say that not knowing, or caring, who made the decision and under what circumstances. Two redundant templates

Before I managed to get the spelling and the caps correct, I created a couple of templates. Neither of these have any references to them, so they could sensibly be deleted. Here are my thoughts: the categories of items and some of the items themselves in the section Waterloo#Art.2C_entertainment.2C_and_media overlap with the categories and items found in the article Waterloo in popular culture, but those lists are incomplete on both pages. Moreover, there are multiple cases in which items listed on both pages are written differently. It appears to me it would be less confusing for readers AND more efficient for us editors to handle this content the way I "proposed" by making the edit that you reverted. I'd appreciate learning - and learning from - your thoughts about that.

Hi @Froid:. Thanks for your reply. I understand the reasoning behind your edit but in general it is completely acceptable for there to be overlap between a disambiguation page FOO and a separate 'FOO in popular culture'. In the case of Waterloo what was at the disambiguation page was actually correct, only titles that were named Waterloo, or could be reasonably referred to as Waterloo (e.g. Waterloo Records). The Waterloo in popular culture page contains pages that wouldn't be acceptable at Waterloo, e.g. songs with partial title matches like Waterloo Sunset.

The style of the pages also can be different. Disambiguation pages have a specific style (see WP:MOSDAB) which emphasises short entries with only a single blue link. The list article can go further by including extra information and further links for each item. It can also add in other things that wouldn't be permitted at a DAB page e.g. references or images.

Disambiguation pages often become cluttered with extra links and in general should be cleaned up by removing the unacceptable entries. Sometimes they can be moved to List article (if a suitable one exists). However cleanup should not remove *all* the entries. For instance I tagged Balada for cleanup yesterday. It contains multiple entries which are partial matches. It should be closer to Ballad (disambiguation) which doesn't have entries for things like Ballad of Easy Rider.

I'm following the standard for disambiguation pages. If you link to a composer that supposedly wrote a composition "Three Songs" then that article must contain that information. Preferably with a source. Disambiguation pages are not random lists of unsourced information. Non-exclusive human name dabs

We have the "human name" modifier of the disambig template for non-exclusive human name dabs, which I fixed [4]. My understanding of MOSDAB is that this is prefered to adding the category (manually). The problem is that using {{disambiguation|human name}} the page is incorrectly sorted. The disambiguation page is sorted as "Chris White" but the hndis page should be sorted as "White, Chris". If a person is looking for a painting entitled TITLE, then they will expect it to be at TITLE, not TITLE (painting). See for instance Mona Lisa, The Garden of Earthly Delights, The Starry Night etc, etc. Disambiguation is only needed if there are multiple articles of the same name, and the painting isn't the WP:PRIMARYTOPIC. No. Everything looks fine to me. All the links are blue, there are no redirects, none of the information is wrong. The layout conforms to MOS:DAB, specifically MOS:DABPEOPLE and MOS:DABPRIMARY. When there is a primary topic, as in this case where Matthew Murphy is primary and the dab page is at Matthew Murphy (disambiguation), the standard is to link that topic separately at the top. Nationality vs born

Hi there, in regards to your move of Christopher Wood (Australian cricketer) to Christopher Wood (cricketer, born 1986) ‎(standard dab), I would argue that the born XXXX style should only be used when the nationality style is still ambiguous. The main reason is that much much more people would know the nationality, rather than the year of birth. If there were 2 or more Australian or English cricketers, then I'd be fine with using the year of birth, but this is unnecessarily obscure disambiguation, IMO. Dave Rothenberg

I am curious about the rationale of moving Dave Rothenberg (broadcaster) to Dave Rothenberg. Prior to writing the article and in researching the details of it, I noticed there were two other articles referring to people with similar names.

• David (1988 film) - an article about a film about a living person whose father set him on fire
• David Rothenberg - another biographical article referring to a musician

Consequently, when I posted the article, I deliberately posted it with some disambiguation in the article name. I'm curious why this wasn't appropriate.

Thanks for pointing out those other articles. I moved the article as Dave Rothenberg was not taken, i.e. it wasn't an article itself or a redirect to another article. The other articles do not indicate that either of those people was known as "Dave" so in those circumstances a WP:HATNOTE is a much better way to point people to those articles. Could you undelete two albums, please?

In January 2015 you deleted Postcards (Sparkadia album) and The Great Impression as "A9" because at that point there was no article about the band Sparkadia and the albums appeared non-notable. A previous article on the band had been deleted as copyvio, but looking into it the band seems notable and I have created a new sourced, non-copyvio, stub for the band. Several of the songs from the albums have articles (eg Jealousy (Sparkadia song)), which were until just now doubly orphaned - no article about the album nor (till a minute ago) about the band.

Could you perhaps undelete those two album articles? Both seem to have charted, and there is now an article about the band.

I know nothing about the Australian alt-pop scene, I just came across this while stub-sorting a stub created at Postcards (song) which led me to the Postcards (disambiguation) where I noticed the redlink for Postcards (Sparkadia album), and wondered whether it could have a blue link to the band, etc. PamD 22:19, 21 April 2015 (UTC)

Link repair and honorifics in titles

Hi there. I noticed some of the link repair that you have been doing at the 'List of Fellows of the Royal Society elected in XXXX' lists (e.g. [8]). I've noticed this and I think it is a problem with all those lists (there are a lot of them). I'm still not entirely happy that all those lists got created, but as they are there is there a quicker way to fix the links in those lists? The full listing appears to be at Category:Lists of Fellows of the Royal Society by year. Also List of Fellows of the Royal Society by election year and Template:Fellows of the Royal Society and Template:FRSyears. Do you think all those 'by year' lists should be created (it seems it was not finished)?

I think they have some purpose. Those other lists are fairly long. One interesting thing is that the source for the by year lists seems to be different i.e. it seems to include the full name of the Fellow. Which of course leads to the high number of redlinks. The other question I had was about honorifics in article titles. I've known for a long time that honorifics shouldn't exist in titles (I think baronets are an exception), but I think this still happens regularly because people copy what they see (and don't realise that baronets are an exception). Anyway, I noticed you moved Sir Wykeham Leigh Pemberton to Wykeham Leigh Pemberton. I also realised that it is possible to do a search to find articles with 'Sir' in the title and exclude the baronets. The search is "intitle:Sir -intitle:baronet". The results are here. There are 870 results there, compared to 3,513 if you just search for 'sir' in the title. Flicking through that list, I found Sir Peter Michael and Sir Thomas Drew. Not so sure about Sir Anthony Keck (MP). I think Sir Robert Pattinson and Sir Dominick Browne might be examples of articles that need renaming? Sir William Galloway, Sir Christopher Robinson, [[Sir William Shelford], and so on. Though looking at Wikipedia:Naming conventions (royalty and nobility) and the current discussion on its talk page, I see that things are not that clear. I will ask more over there. I think you have accurately summed it up. I know there have been lots of discussion in the past. In my view modern people with Sir, e.g. Sir Peter Michael, should definitely be at a standard disambiguated name e.g. Peter Michael (engineer).
