Witchcraft[edit]

Why did you move Sinatra's Witchcraft? It's certainly the primary topic for Witchcraft (song). I admire all you other hard work, btw :) Gareth E Kegg (talk) 20:05, 14 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

If a page needs a disambiguator it should be totally unambiguous per WP:PDAB. As there are other articles about songs called "Witchcraft" I moved it to an unambiguous title. Thanks. Tassedethe (talk) 20:09, 14 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I think that page is itself ambiguous. Do you not take any external validation into account like internal links or Google hits? Your recent move of "That's All" showed a similar lack of foresight. So many jazz standards have albums and songs named after them, that is why they should serve as the primary topic. They shouldn't be ranked alongside non notable songs as equal. The recent discussion on "The Best Is Yet to Come" could provide a guide [1] Gareth E Kegg (talk) 22:16, 20 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]
The Genesis song That's All (Genesis song) is hardly non-notable. In fact it is gets more hits than the "standard", ~9000 versus ~5100 over the last 3 months. Just because something is named after another thing doesn't make the first thing the primary topic. Compare Boston and Boston, Lincolnshire. Tassedethe (talk) 22:26, 20 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry to be a nag. What was your rationale for moving "Come Fly with Me?" Best wishes. Gareth E Kegg (talk) 18:05, 2 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Very much like the other moves. We have two articles on songs Come Fly with Me (song) and Come Fly with Me (Foxy Brown song). Disambiguating with just (song) isn't enough, it is still ambiguous. It's obvious that the first is much more notable so in line with the move of Thriller (album) to Thriller (Michael Jackson album) I haven't redirected Come Fly with Me (song) back to Come Fly with Me but left it redirecting to Come Fly with Me (1957 song). Unlike the song "Witchcraft" I think there might be a case for moving the song to Come Fly with Me as it could be regarded as the WP:PRIMARYTOPIC. Tassedethe (talk) 18:13, 2 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]

"Insert name here" novel[edit]

I see you have moved countless articles about books to "Title ("insert last name of author here" novel). I haven't encounted this form of article naming before, and in none of the instances I've got on my watch list is there any competing articles with similarly named novels which could be confused by the current existing one. To cut a long story short, are you sure this spate of renamings which includes the authors name was necessary? --Saddhiyama (talk) 00:08, 27 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

All the page moves of articles ending (novel) to (Author1 novel) have occurred as there is another article ending (Author2 novel) (sometimes (year novel)). If you have an example where this is not the case please let me know. Tassedethe (talk) 00:18, 27 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Questioning edits to Larry Miller[edit]

I'm not quite sure of the logic behind the changes in [/w/index.php?title=Larry_Miller&diff=567160102&oldid=567101589 this revision].

There are three:

  1. Adding the final comma in "Larry H. Miller (1944–2009), American businessman, owner of the Utah Jazz, 1985–2009". Er... I don't think that comma should be there. Since it's an abbreviation of "owner of the Utah Jazz from 1985–2009", which doesn't take a comma, I think it's more readable without.
  2. Changing "Laurence "Larry" Miller (guitarist)" to "Larry Miller (guitarist)". This reverted my change to the former, which I thought was more informative without being overly verbose. I'm willing to be enlightened; can you explain why one form is preferred?
  3. Changing a hyphen to a dash in a comment. Yup, that's an improvement. I was lazy in the comment.

71.41.210.146 (talk) 12:23, 7 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

1. I like the comma, it clarifies that the entity is the "Utah Jazz" not the "Utah Jazz 1985–2009", cf BSC Kickers 1900 etc. However I'm not going to demand it remain. 2. The MOS (WP:MOSDAB#Piping and redirects) clearly states, "...piping or redirects should not be used in disambiguation pages". There are some exceptions but this wasn't one of them. 3. Great! Thanks for your comments. Happy editing. Tassedethe (talk) 13:02, 7 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]
1. Huh. To me, the comma makes it part of the list, as in
  • American businessman
  • owner of the Utah Jazz
  • 1985–2009
which is hard to understand. If you like the comma, maybe change the preceding one to a semicolon? I'm tempted to put it in parentheses, but I worry about the similarity to birth/death years.
2. Um, if I want to get legalistic, it also says "Articles only listing persons with a certain given name or surname, known as anthroponymy articles, are not disambiguation pages, and this Manual of Style does not apply to them."
However, I don't want to get legalistic, I want to follow the spirit. The section you quoted says, in full,

Subject to certain exceptions as listed below, piping or redirects should not be used in disambiguation pages. This is to make it clear to the reader which article is being suggested, so that the reader remains in control of the choice of article. For example, in the Moment disambiguation page, with the entry for Moment (physics), " (physics)" should be visible to the reader. In many cases, what would be hidden by a pipe is exactly what the user would need in order to find the intended article.

They're arguing against using piping to abbreviate the link name. The persistent theme is against surprising the reader or concealing information. I don't think expanding it is a problem. If you look at the WP:MOSDAB#Where_piping_may_be_appropriate section, you'll see a number of examples on the general theme of "render more accurately than the article title", which is what I was trying to do. I agree none of the examples apply to what I was doing, but I think it's in the same spirit. Do you disagree?
71.41.210.146 (talk) 13:42, 7 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, piping is allowed for certain reasons, expanding isn't one of them. Hiding or expanding gives a false impression to the reader. Plus, this isn't anthroponymy page as it doesn't list people with a certain given name or surname. Larry (given name) with Larry Miller, Larry Smith etc. is an anthroponymy page. Policy for changing "from" Upper Case to lower case[edit]

The sources that I've seen referring to the book The Last Train From Hiroshima show the word "From" in Upper Case. See this source in The New York Times and this one in The Washington Post for examples. Can you refer me to any policy that requires that the word "from" in a title be in lower case or provide what evidence you used to determine that the title of the article should be changed? If there is a policy requiring this change, can I strongly suggest that you reference it specifically in the edit summary of your moves? Alansohn (talk) 20:18, 18 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

September 2013[edit]

Hello I noticed that you had added a category to my article Marc Y Chenevert. I have been targeted by another editor that first didnt like how the copyright on my photos of the article was verified. I addressed that and they have been corrected and then he added a do not move banner to them for a watermark. Once that was all corrected he has now moved on to my article and has decided that I have some connection with the subject and when I addressed that he then added a number or tags and decided that if there were no discussion on the subject that that he would nominate the article for deletion. I think this would be a terrible loss as the subject person is very notable. Would you mind to join in on this discussion and see what you think about the issues that he LGA has brought up? Thanks so much. Mmb777e (talk) 12:56, 16 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Incomplete matches[edit]

Sorry for my out-of-date insistence that putting them under "See also" sufficed, and thanks for managing to bring me up to date flame-lessly. I had been annoyed by (but grudgingly tolerated) what i think i recall as all-titles-beginning links under "See also", and perhaps i just missed the transition to the actually effective "intitle" searches which (with the aid of redirects-to-section or -anchor) i can see provide a far better solution to the "persistent boils" in the See-also sections. Cheers.

I'm not exactly sure but I think if you found such an article then you could add BLP PROD and the 10 day count would restart. I don't think it qualifies for any sort of speedy deletion. In this case it was a valid removal, AFAIK IMDB is an acceptable source for these purposes (i.e it is not Facebook/Twitter etc). However it's certainly not good enough for AfD. Question[edit]

Hello. I have a question about tennis. For example infobox of this article. What's mean of 32S / 24Q / 16D  ? It s mean of 32seeds / 24Qualification /16 ? . Sorry for my bad english. Can you help me? Beyazmavi (talk) 18:47, 6 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I'm sorry I don't know much about tennis and I do not know the meaning of 32S / 24Q / 16D. Perhaps if you ask at WikiProject Tennis or at the reference desk someone there is more likely to know the answer. Good luck. Tassedethe (talk) 18:53, 6 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Disambiguation pages[edit]

Hi Tassedthe,

As I understand it, if there are two people with the same name, the more famous person takes precedence for the main name article. I tried to do this with Christopher Shannon for the fashion designer but for some reason - I don't remember what it was - trying to make the page wouldn't take. Almost the hits on Wikipedia that linked to Christopher Shannon were in reference to the current designer, while the main page was for the aviator, who was only linked from two subject-specific pages and was unlikely to be linked to from many other articles. For some reason, all I could do was turn the page into a redirect to the main C Shannon article. Anyway, it strikes me that rather than a disambiguation page for two people, the page Christopher Shannon would be better off with the fashion designer's page transferred over to it, and a hatnote for the aviator article. The only reasoning I've seen for a disambiguation page with only two entries is if both entries are equally famous or equally likely to be search terms, which I don't think applies in this instance. However, rather than undo your dab page, I thought I'd check with you first to see if the rules had changed or there was a compelling reason for a two-entry dab in this instance. Category renaming[edit]

Hi- could you point to the policy that justifies the renaming of "John Smith albums" to "John Smith (singer) albums"? It looks ugly and unnecessary to me, but if there is a guideline/policy which proscribes it, I'm happy to let it drop. J Milburn (talk) 15:00, 11 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Well I've had a look round and I can't find it specifically written down. Convention has been to match Category titles to Article titles, and this has lead to it becoming a Speedy criteria: D. A rename to facilitate concordance between a particular category's name and a related article's name. The rename discussion for Tool is typical of the consensus. Tassedethe (talk) 15:19, 11 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]
If I may weigh in... criterion C2.B, which includes "disambiguation fixes from an unqualified name", is most relevant, in my opinion. -- Black Falcon (talk) 22:45, 17 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

question about category removal[edit]

Hi, I saw that you removed Category:Denis Diderot and Category:Encyclopedism from Urena lobata. Presuming it wasn't because of perceived irrelevance, as could be imagined, I'm hoping you can tell me why you removed them (and inquisitive "why?" rather than a defensive "why!"). I can't say I have much experience with categories beyond the basics and those two seem quit appropriate for the page. Is it because they're redlinks? Because they were one-item categories? Thanks. --— Rhododendrites talk |  23:15, 23 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for your question. The first thing is that they are redlinks i.e. those categories have not been created. Secondly the category system is meant to group articles together with a common theme. In general this means that usually there must be several articles on a subject before a category is necessary. (One item categories can be created if they fall within a established scheme e.g. Category:22 births.) For people it's rare for them to have an entire category to themselves. E.g. there is Category:William Shakespeare but not Category:Daniel Defoe, although there is Category:Works by Daniel Defoe. So for Denis Diderot there is Category:Novels by Denis Diderot and Category:Plays by Denis Diderot. Even if there was Category:Denis Diderot I don't think it would be appropriate to categorize the plant in that way. Diderot wrote about the plant but that is the extent of the connection. For comparison, you wouldn't categorize Elsinore or Verona with Category:William Shakespeare although obviously they have a strong connection to the work of Shakespeare. I hope that's clear. Tassedethe (talk) 23:35, 23 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I guess my inclination is to err on the side of more categories. I.e. I wouldn't object to Verona being included in the Shakespeare category so long as it didn't necessitate removal from more directly related categories. If the category became cluttered I'd probably just fork a "Shakespearean geography," "cities in shakespeare," or some better worded but similar idea. I guess so long as it's relevant, not redundant, and not purely rhetorical (like including Scientology in Category:Hogwash) then I don't have a big problem with it. But that's speaking out of ignorance of category policies.
The reason I included the Diderot category to begin with isn't just because he wrote about it, which he barely did. It's an article in the Encyclopedie that's kind of a non-article. It's a commentary about the production of encyclopedias and their audience (directly). Certainly not a novel or play, and not really fit for a Category:Works by Denis Diderot either (another example whose absence boggles my mind). As such Encyclopedism seems an appropriate category, too (perhaps more so). But you're saying it's no good to just add something to a category? That someone categorizing an article also has to create the category page and ensure there are other pages with the same category (otherwise don't add it)? --— Rhododendrites talk |  23:54, 23 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Certainly the role of categories is debatable - and your view of more categories is perfectly reasonable (and I think shared by many others). Although as an aside Category:Places associated with William Shakespeare was created but deleted after a discussion.
It's actually fairly easy to create a new category (much easier than articles), all it needs is the addition of a category of its own. E.g Category:Encyclopedism probably would have Category:Encyclopedias. As with all things Wikipedia there no need to add more articles, but single article categories are more likely to get merged or deleted. You can add redlink categories, again it's Wikipedia, nobody has to follow through with category creation and population. I won't remove ones that I think seem reasonable or I know fit in with an existing scheme, but as you found I did disagree with the two you added. (It was only the fact they were red that drew me to them.) Tassedethe (talk) 00:20, 24 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Ok thanks. I've readded the encyclopedism cat, created that category page, and added a couple other pages to it. Hopefully that should do the trick. --— Rhododendrites talk |  07:59, 24 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Re these - was he the only member of the category? I may have forgotten to add the others after creating it - the main article has never had it. The category would be a valid one & I would like to recreate it. Johnbod (talk) 14:48, 26 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

You are encouraged to participate in the discussion underway at Talk:Thomas Keightley (historian) to rename Thomas Keightley (historian)Thomas Keightley. As the editor responsible for moving the name the other way around in the first place, I would like to hear your rationale for doing so. Since your reverted my actions recently to stopgap fix this, I assume you have some reason for wanting to keep this label. However, as far as I can determine, WP:PRIMARYTOPIC appear to be easily met, and I do not seriously believe anyone who has actually .

I have given my own rationale for wanting this move, and it is not anything personal, to undermine what you do, etc. I have laid out the reasons in full on the article talk page, but for one, "Thomas Keightley (historian)" would seem to be a misleading label to many nowadays who recognize him as mythology/folklore writer primarily. As another practical reason, which is self-evident if you put yourself in the shoe of people whose are mainly concentrating on writing the substance of the article, is that they can do without the extra distraction of having to seek out or type out this extraneous "(historian)" when they add a link to this author.--Kiyoweap (talk) 13:57, 9 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Wow Two People Now[edit]

I thought one was enough, but apparently two people can't do some simple research.

How about before deleting content, you do some research first. Research which would have taken about 10 seconds. Jinx is in fact a champion in the popular MOBA Game League of Legends.

As evidenced by this:

Do your research next time. I've heard that people on Wikipedia delete content without doing any research. Now I see that I'm right. It took me longer to type up the information, then look at the websites. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 67.149.52.125 (talk) 21:57, 15 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

No content was deleted as Jinx is not an article but a disambiguation page, it is meant for navigation to content. There is no information on "Jinx" on the page League of Legends. And until there is the entry on Jinx will be removed. Tassedethe (talk) 22:01, 15 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Then do some research. I've found at least three other instances of this present on Wikipedia using popular names and things that will have a disamg page. Now unless all of those pages, and I'll probably find more, remove that reference, then that is completely inconsistent formatting. One has been there for several years. Now either point to a policy where it says that you can't do that, or put it back in. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 67.149.52.125 (talk) 22:08, 15 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Please read WP:OTHERSTUFFEXISTS. Please read WP:MOSDAB especially MOS:DABMENTION. Tassedethe (talk) 22:11, 15 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Well at least a policy was pointed out. I will refrain from readding then per Wikipedia policy. Although you could have just pointed out the last link since that said it point blank.
Would it be against Wikipedia policy then to create a list of champions in League or not? If it is allowed, then would the reference be valid and with a link to that article and the list article?
Sorry about that, I didn't notice that the original revert edit also didn't link to a policy. If you added a list of champions (with a reference) then it would be entirely correct to add a link on any disambiguation pages involved. I would avoid adding links for minor characters, they would probably be removed on notability/trivia grounds. Tassedethe (talk) 22:23, 15 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]
I would probably avoid trivia sections, too much bias with that, with the link presented above being the reference for multiple ones, just going back to the index page. Maybe I'll get around to that later since I only did this to take a break from homework. Thank you for your time. You've been civil which is a change from what I commonly hear about things like this. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 67.149.52.125 (talk) 22:27, 15 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

From Russia with Love[edit]

I'm a little confused about this. It seems better to label it as a disambiguation to me. Was my way really wrong? Survivorfan1995 (talk) 05:49, 18 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Yes. Disambiguation pages only have (disambiguation) in the title if there is not a "primary topic" (WP:PRIMARYTOPIC). So we have things like The Beatles with The Beatles (disambiguation) or Elvis Presley with Elvis Presley (disambiguation). But for other subjects we have disambiguation pages like From Russia with Love, Goldfinger, John Smith or Love Story. Whether or not there is a "primary topic" is often argued discussed :) .Tassedethe (talk) 05:56, 18 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Northwich Villa F.C. once again[edit]

The person who corrupting this entry, and its talk page, seems very determined, and is at it once again. Is there any chance that Northwich Villa F.C. and its talk page could be protected again, this time for considerably longer than one week? (Once the edit removing the DIRECT has been reversed.) Drawoh46 (talk) 21:02, 21 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Already done. I set it to infinite this time, there doesn't seem to be any benefit in just doing it for a month or six months or whatever. It has wasted the time of too many other responsible editors and admins. Tassedethe (talk) 21:07, 21 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]
That's an impressive response! Infinite is ideal. Many thanks! Drawoh46 (talk) 21:18, 21 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Deletions[edit]

Hi, Tasse. Thanks, as always, for all your hard work. I don't know if you're aware that Template:db-disambig has been changed? Apparently, it didn't fit with speedy criteria. I clicked on the G8 link in your edit summary, and it said it was for pages ending in (disambiguation) and with fewer than two links. I think some of those you've been deleting haven't had fewer than two links. I only realised the change when I added a speedy tag and it was removed with the above reason given. I also think a lot of these aren't uncontroversial maintenance - I'm finding more than half of them have enough valid entries. Would you consider using PROD instead? It'll then meet the deletion criteria and give an opportunity for them to be looked over by others. Best wishes, Boleyn (talk) 08:09, 22 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]

All the ones I've deleted have had just two links and no more. I can PROD them just as easily. Thanks. Tassedethe (talk) 13:40, 22 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Ft Hood Shooting[edit]

Please remove the semi-protect from Ft Hood Shooting 2014. It hampers the ability of users to keep the page up to date.

Unfortunately the article was being repeatedly vandalised by anonymous users. I have protected it for 12 hours. You can always use the article talk page to make a specific edit request. Tassedethe (talk) 00:55, 3 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry, I thought the link led to the page that was already on. Maybe the link should be at the top of the page and ask "Did you mean..." or something of the like. Piguy101 (talk) 16:33, 7 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Not a problem. On disambiguation pages, it's standard to keep the list of related spellings at the bottom, in the see also section. In this case there is Hans Olson and Hans Olsen. You could imagine there could also be Hans Ollsson or Hans Olssen. Then a hatnote becomes unwieldy. The layout recommendations are at MOS:DABSEEALSO. It says to use a hatnote "when appropriate". In my view that's for cases where the misspelling is highly likely to have been what the user *really* wanted. E.g. if there was a disambiguation page at Jessus then I'd expect a hatnote to Jesus. Of course "when appropriate" will differ among different editors :) Happy editing.Tassedethe (talk) 20:09, 7 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]
That sounds good. I guess no changes are needed. Piguy101 (talk) 21:51, 7 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]

May 2014 disambig contest: let's do it again![edit]

Greetings fellow disambiguator! Remember back in February when we made history by clearing the board for the first time ever, for the monthly disambiguation contest? Let's do it again in May! I personally will be aiming to lead the board next month, but for anyone who thinks they can put in a better effort, I will give a $10 Amazon gift card to any editor who scores more disambiguation points in May. Also, I will be setting up a one-day contest later in the month, and will try to set up more prizes and other ways to make this a fun and productive month. Can you explain to me what you're doing with the "Dominican Americans" category on this article? You say that its "ambiguous" - why is it any more ambiguous than "Afican-Americans in New York"? Certainly, a better cat would be "Domincan-American culture", but that cat does not exist, and the closest to it is "Dominican Americans". So, what's your rationale? BMK (talk) 04:41, 11 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Please look at the category. There are two countries with similar names Dominica and the Dominican Republic which makes "Dominican Americans" ambiguous. Tassedethe (talk) 05:15, 11 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry, that is incorrect. "Dominican American" means only Americans from the Dominican Republic. Dominca doesn't enter into it at all. BMK (talk) 05:54, 11 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]
It would be nice if people making decisions like this, whoever they are, had some actual practical knowledge of the subject. To say this category is "ambiguous" because of the existence of Dominica is absurd and ludicrous. "Dominican American" means one thing, and one thing only, and anytime you see that phrase, that is precisely what it will mean. I have no idea what Americans from Dominica are called, but it's not "Dominican Americans". BMK (talk) 06:03, 11 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]
"People making decisions like this" are volunteer editors like yourself. And at some point the decision was made to avoid ambiguity and move items from the category to Category:American people of Dominican Republic descent. I have reverted your change to the category as it goes against a previous discussion here. If you want to change the remit of the category you should start a new discussion at Wikipedia:Categories for discussion. Tassedethe (talk) 14:30, 11 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]
At some point someone has created Category:Dominican American (to match Dominican American). I've moved East Harlem to that category, although overall I don't see why the article needs to be in this category at all. The article makes no claim of any particularly strong Dominican American community, other than some Dominicans live there. Tassedethe (talk) 14:37, 11 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Volunteers? Really? Huh, I've been here 9 years, I just thought my check was in the mail.

It's irrelevant whether we're volunteers or paid for what we do, we still should have some amount of competency, and some knowledge about the real world, and not simply live in Wiki-fantasy Land. Whichever volunteer editor, or group of volunteer editors, was so clueless about reality that they thought "Dominican American" was an ambiguous term really shouldn't be making silly decisions such as that without knowing what they are doing - and I say that not knowing, or caring, who made the decision and under what circumstances. Louis Legrand dab[edit]

Hi, I see you've just done a full dab treatment for the 3 Louis Legrands. However, I'd say it was clear that Louis Legrand (artist) is by far the best known of them; would it not be better for Louis Legrand to go straight to him, with a hatnote to Louis Legrand (disambiguation) for the rare cases of the other two men? Dab on A Luta Continua[edit]

Hi Tassdethe. I had left "(Album)" after A Luta Continua because there is also a A luta continua as a separate article. Can two articles exist with the same name, with just a difference in upper/ lower case? Rui ''Gabriel'' Correia (talk) 01:16, 20 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for pointing that out. It is acceptable to have pages differ just by capitalization: WP:NCCAPS#Page names that only differ by capitalization. As that guideline recommends I'll add a link from the album back to the slogan. Tassedethe (talk) 01:28, 20 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Two redundant templates[edit]

Before I managed to get the spelling and the caps correct, I created a couple of templates. Neither of these have any references to them, so they could sensibly be deleted. They are: "Template:Fb team Litherland Remcya" and "Template:Fb team Litherland REMCYA". The correct one, which I wish to retain, has the last word spelt REMYCA. Is there a better way of getting redundant pages deleted? Drawoh46 (talk) 11:06, 20 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]

As the sole author you could add {{Db-author}} to the page you wish deleted. I don't see any restriction on the use of that for templates at WP:CSD but it's not an area I'm particularly familiar with. Tassedethe (talk) 13:36, 20 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the response. I'll try that. First, I've changed the links to the two templates so that they appear above within quotes, so that there are no references to them. Drawoh46 (talk) 15:49, 20 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Greetings Tassedethe:

I'm responding to your reversion of my redirecting entries from Waterloo#Art.2C_entertainment.2C_and_media to Waterloo in popular culture, as I've seen done on other Wikipedia pages. Here are my thoughts: the categories of items and some of the items themselves in the section Waterloo#Art.2C_entertainment.2C_and_media overlap with the categories and items found in the article Waterloo in popular culture, but those lists are incomplete on both pages. Moreover, there are multiple cases in which items listed on both pages are written differently. It appears to me it would be less confusing for readers AND more efficient for us editors to handle this content the way I "proposed" by making the edit that you reverted. I'd appreciate learning - and learning from - your thoughts about that.

Thanks in advance, and best wishes. Froid (talk) 03:36, 2 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Hi @Froid:. Thanks for your reply. I understand the reasoning behind your edit but in general it is completely acceptable for there to be overlap between a disambiguation page FOO and a separate 'FOO in popular culture'. In the case of Waterloo what was at the disambiguation page was actually correct, only titles that were named Waterloo, or could be reasonably referred to as Waterloo (e.g. Waterloo Records). The Waterloo in popular culture page contains pages that wouldn't be acceptable at Waterloo, e.g. songs with partial title matches like Waterloo Sunset.
The style of the pages also can be different. Disambiguation pages have a specific style (see WP:MOSDAB) which emphasises short entries with only a single blue link. The list article can go further by including extra information and further links for each item. It can also add in other things that wouldn't be permitted at a DAB page e.g. references or images.
Disambiguation pages often become cluttered with extra links and in general should be cleaned up by removing the unacceptable entries. Sometimes they can be moved to List article (if a suitable one exists). However cleanup should not remove *all* the entries. For instance I tagged Balada for cleanup yesterday. It contains multiple entries which are partial matches. It should be closer to Ballad (disambiguation) which doesn't have entries for things like Ballad of Easy Rider.
I hope that I've explained my reasoning clearly. If there is anything else I can do please let me know. Thanks. Tassedethe (talk) 17:16, 2 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Hi again Tassedethe:
Thank you for the explanation. Later this week, I'll compare and contrast the articles you mentioned. I welcome any additional resources or advice you believe will lend further clarification on this topic.
Best wishes. Froid (talk) 18:30, 2 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

A tag has been placed on Betty Cobb (disambiguation) requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section G6 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because it is an orphaned disambiguation page which either

  • disambiguates two or fewer extant Wikipedia pages and whose title ends in "(disambiguation)" (i.e., there is a primary topic); or
  • disambiguates no (zero) extant Wikipedia pages, regardless of its title.

Under the criteria for speedy deletion, such pages may be deleted at any time. Please see the disambiguation page guidelines for more information.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Click here to contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be removed without delay. Deleting composer songs from dabs[edit]

The following discussion is closed. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made on the appropriate discussion page. No further edits should be made to this discussion.

User:Tassedethe, Really, what is the point? Yes the composition lists of composers need expanding. You could help do that. But what exactly does deleting a composition of John Ireland, Joaquín Rodrigo, Ingvar Lidholm or Arthur Bliss add to Wikipedia? In many of these cases you could copy across a song list from de.wp to the composer article. It would take less effort than deleting compositions from dabs. In ictu oculi (talk) 06:17, 27 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

I'm sure you're doing good work but it's not as if a there's any question of notability here, it's simply that we have more pop editors than classical. BTW Can I ask whether you search wikipedia manually to see that the composer's works are not listed, or whether there's a tool? In ictu oculi (talk) 06:42, 27 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]
I've added the compositions into composition lists (actually 2 were there already), and scrapped two composer mentions and added several more - into composition article first. Would you mind putting the completely unnotable Tres Canciones album at (album) and letting it redirect to something more encyclopedic? All the best. In ictu oculi (talk) 08:01, 27 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]
I'm following the standard for disambiguation pages. If you link to a composer that supposedly wrote a composition "Three Songs" then that article must contain that information. Preferably with a source. Disambiguation pages are not random lists of unsourced information. If you want to add information to disambiguation pages then you should ensure that has been added to the article first. Tassedethe (talk) 13:09, 27 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]
I realise that, it just isn't massively helpful that's all. Can I ask, is there a tool or do you do this checking manually? Also can you please move Tres Canciones to (album) and letting it redirect to all the Tres Canciones at dab? Thanks In ictu oculi (talk) 02:26, 28 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]
I'm sorry but if you know your entries are not following the guidelines why are you surprised when they are removed? I won't be moving the album. At the moment it is the only article with that title, see here. If you create another article entitled Tres Canciones I will be happy to move the album. In the meantime I will add a hatnote so that people can find the songs. Tassedethe (talk) 02:58, 28 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Each entry has to be checked manually. Tassedethe (talk) 02:58, 28 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Because I would like to see a bit of common sense applied to something as banal as listing a Brahms opus on a dab page. I realise 4 November 2011‎ is some time ago, but all the same when you moved (moved Tres Canciones (album) to Tres Canciones: no need for dab) dab guidelines at the time already told editors not to dab by title. Or maybe they didn't, but they certainly don't do so now. This is not the only topic by any means, can you please undo the (old) move. In ictu oculi (talk) 00:00, 29 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]
The discussion above is closed. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made on the appropriate discussion page. No further edits should be made to this discussion.

Once a prod has been removed it should not be replaced, see WP:DEPROD. All prod nominations should include an edit summary, which yours did not have, see WP:PRODNOM. All prod nominations will be rejected for failing to include an edit summary, see WP:PROD#Procedure for administrators. Tassedethe (talk) 02:20, 26 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Your rationale is excessively bureaucratic. I have readied the nomination with an edit summary. If you are actually objecting to the nomination for deletion, but acting on technicalities that’s not a great tact as well. Cheers! --SpyMagician (talk) 16:01, 26 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]
The instructions clearly (in fact it's bolded) say: "If anyone, including the article creator, removes a {{proposed deletion/dated}} tag from an article, do not replace it, even if the tag was apparently removed in bad faith." This was a perfectly reasonable deprod, with a perfectly valid reason. Tassedethe (talk) 02:33, 27 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]
“…with a perfectly valid reason. ” What is the perfectly valid reason? Your original reason was I had no summary in place. Well, I added that summary. Can yo please provide the reason you see as valid as to remove the nomination for deletion? --SpyMagician (talk) 03:50, 27 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Since you are choosing to say nothing on why you are against the deletion of this article, there is an articles for deletion discussion on Tube Bar (album) over here. --SpyMagician (talk) 15:43, 20 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]

August 2014[edit]

Hello, I'm BracketBot. I have automatically detected that your edit to James Baird may have broken the syntax by modifying 1 "[]"s. If you have, don't worry: just edit the page again to fix it. If I misunderstood what happened, or if you have any questions, you can leave a message on my operator's talk page.

List of unpaired brackets remaining on the page:
  • * [[James Baird (civil engineer)]] (1873–1953), builder of the Lincoln Memorial] and quarterback of the Michigan Wolverines football team

It's OK to remove this message. Also, to stop receiving these messages, follow these opt-out instructions. Thanks, BracketBot (talk) 19:11, 30 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Non-exclusive human name dabs[edit]

We have the "human name" modifier of the disambig template for non-exclusive human name dabs, which I fixed [4]. My understanding of MOSDAB is that this is prefered to adding the category (manually). Is there a problem as you've replaced it with the normal category [5] ? Regards Widefox; talk 23:50, 4 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]

The problem is that using {{disambiguation|human name}} the page is incorrectly sorted. The disambiguation page is sorted as "Chris White" but the hndis page should be sorted as "White, Chris". Only by separating out the category can the correct sort by applied. Tassedethe (talk) 01:50, 5 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Thought so, sounds like the "human name" parameter isn't useful - better to either remove it (from the template) and add the category manually, or can we get it fixed to add the sort? In either case, want to drop a note into the dab project (maybe you did already) saying as such, then MOSDAB can be modified. Widefox; talk 02:27, 5 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]
I'd say it should be removed, a double sort feature would be an overengineered solution. Tassedethe (talk) 22:58, 5 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Proposed deletion of Top 5 Hits[edit]

Image:Ambox warning yellow.svg|left|link=|48px|]]

The article Top 5 Hits has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

Non notable compilation series

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, content or articles may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. Hi Tassedethe, you entered 1913 as the birth year of Fred Jackson here. I believe that your edit is correct, however, the article itself mentions 1929 as year of birth. Do you have by any chance a reference for your edit? -- Linksfuss (talk) 08:20, 20 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]

On the date of my edit the article had 1913 as the year of birth. It has since been changed at the article but with no citation or source. I have no idea about the true date. Tassedethe (talk) 16:36, 20 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Actually the IP who changed date from 1913 to 1929 did add a reference but incorrectly formatted. It says 1929. Tassedethe (talk) 16:42, 20 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Andrew Eustace Palmer[edit]

You created the redirect Andrew Eustace Palmer back in September 2008, but none of the articles on the Andrew Palmer dab mention the middle name Eustace. If the redirect doesn't refer to someone with an article then it should probably be deleted. Nick Number (talk) 18:41, 24 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]

It should point to Andrew Palmer (diplomat). That was how it was listed at List of Ambassadors of the United Kingdom to Cuba back in 2008[6] as that was how it was listed at the UK embassy website.[7]. I'll add a reference at the article. Thanks. Tassedethe (talk) 23:14, 24 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Category:Films directed by James Williamson (film pioneer)[edit]

I'm sorry, I have mucked up the speedy move by moving it back to the name w/o parentheses. My apologies. While I do not believe that C2D should apply in this case, when there is no one else by this name directing films, I was not paying enough attention and did not see that had been renamed as a result of a speedy rename. Shawn in Montreal (talk) 21:12, 29 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]

This is a standard for all categories, the category name should match the article. As far as I'm aware all such renamings taken to a full WP:CFD have gone through, this is why it is now speedyable. See for instance this discussion: Game Theory albums. Tassedethe (talk) 15:33, 1 November 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Frank Buckley Walker (talent agent)[edit]

Hi my name is brian myers and I am the creator of the article that you recently deleted because I didn't have two words in it. If you could retrieve it for me so I could make your suggested slight revisions, it would be extremely appreciated. And in the future, would you mind please letting me know about an error on my talk page instead of immediately trying to delete it. I spent hours of work and studying on that article and I don't think it's fair that I have to start over because of two words. Thanks. shaunbreuner (talk) — Preceding undated comment added 16:48, 31 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Jamaat-e-Islami[edit]

Yes, putting an article in a Disambiguation page is not appropriate. My plan is to change the page from a Disambiguation page to a short article with prominent links to the successor parties (Jamaat-e-Islami Pakistan, etc.).

Jamaat-e-Islami existed as a distinct party for several years and has a prominent place is the history of Islamism. Besides that a summary in one place of when the successor parties started up could be useful to readers. --BoogaLouie (talk) 21:22, 1 November 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Another reason is to allow the sentence
Jamaat-e-Islami Hind (JIH, Urdu: جماعتِ اسلامی ہند, Hindi: जमात-ए-इस्लामी हिन्द) is an Islamic political party in India,[1] founded as an offshoot of the Jamaat-e-Islami,
to make sense. Curently what would you link "Jamaat-e-Islami" to but the Disambiguation page. --BoogaLouie (talk) 22:23, 1 November 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Then the correct action should be to create a new article and then request that the new article, and the existing disambiguation page, be moved. Tassedethe (talk) 21:39, 1 November 2014 (UTC)[reply]
"Create a new article". What would be the name of that new article? Jamaat-e-Islami is already taken. --BoogaLouie (talk) 22:25, 1 November 2014 (UTC)[reply]
You could create it with that title in Userspace or Draftspace. Or you could give it a title with a disambiguator e.g. Jamaat-e-Islami (historic). Tassedethe (talk) 22:30, 1 November 2014 (UTC)[reply]

A tag has been placed on Dean Lawrence requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia.

Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. Michael McGuire[edit]

Okay. I hope I am typing in the right spot. I'm still setting up to get a mentor BUT on to the point... You recently edited or was the last to edit a list of Michael Maguire's.

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Michael_McGuire

I would do this myself if I new how but this (at least to me) seems far too advanced. If you notice, each Michael McGuire has a link (blue) to his page. All EXCEPT "Michael McGuire (actor)" The easy fix would be to somehow link the actors name on the first link above, to the page linked below.

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Michael_Maguire_%28actor%29

Hope I did this right. (?)

Moves of paintings[edit]

Have I mentioned before how really, really unhelpful to the reader all these moves of paintings are? I really wish you'd stop. Johnbod (talk) 00:46, 3 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]

If a person is looking for a painting entitled TITLE, then they will expect it to be at TITLE, not TITLE (painting). See for instance Mona Lisa, The Garden of Earthly Delights, The Starry Night etc, etc. Disambiguation is only needed if there are multiple articles of the same name, and the painting isn't the WP:PRIMARYTOPIC. About your (non)participation in the January 2012 SOPA vote[edit]

Hi. I am Piotr Konieczny (User:Piotrus), you may know me as an active content creator (see my userpage), but I am also a professional researcher of Wikipedia. Recently I published a paper (downloadable here) on reasons editors participated in Wikipedia's biggest vote to date (January 2012 WP:SOPA). I am now developing a supplementary paper, which analyzes why many editors did not take part in that vote. Which is where you come in :) You are a highly active Wikipedian (10th most active!), and you were active back during the January 2012 discussion/voting for the SOPA, yet you did not chose to participate in said vote. I'd appreciate it if you could tell me why was that so? For your convenience, I prepared a short survey at meta, which should not take more than a minute of your time. I would dearly appreciate you taking this minute; not only as a Wikipedia researcher but as a fellow content creator and concerned member of the community (I believe your answers may help us eventually improve our policies and thus, the project's governance). Presentation proposal for Wikimania 2015[edit]

How to pick up more women...
Hi Tassedethe! Victuallers and I have developed a proposal for a talk to be presented at Wikimania 2015. It's titled, How to pick up more women... -- as in more women editors and more women's biographies. Examples include the Edit-a-thon blitz during WikiWomen's History Month and the "new articles" work underway by WikiProject Women Writers. The Wikimania talk proposal review process has begun and there's no guarantee that our proposal will be accepted. That's where you come in. Please review it and, if you wish, give us feedback on the submission's talkpage or my talkpage (vs. your talkpage). Ultimately, we hope you add your name to the signup at the bottom of the proposal which signifies you'd be interested in the talk if you were attending it (it does not commit you to attending Wikimania). Thank you! Rosiestep (talk) 04:10, 25 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]

dabfix breaking disambig pages?[edit]

I don't see anything wrong there, certainly nothing is broken. (The dabfix tool itself is broken, but not when that edit was made). The specific MOS for the current layout is MOS:DABPEOPLE. Tassedethe (talk) 01:26, 21 March 2015 (UTC)[reply]
I don't know what you are seeing but I see:
Matthew Murphy (born 1984) is an English musician.
Matthew Murphy may also refer to:...
in this order -- Are you seeing something different? Ottawahitech (talk) 20:11, 21 March 2015 (UTC)[reply]
No. Everything looks fine to me. All the links are blue, there are no redirects, none of the information is wrong. The layout conforms to MOS:DAB, specifically MOS:DABPEOPLE and MOS:DABPRIMARY. When there is a primary topic, as in this case where Matthew Murphy is primary and the dab page is at Matthew Murphy (disambiguation), the standard is to link that topic separately at the top. See examples such John Adams (disambiguation), Nicholas Murphy (disambiguation), Henry Cooper (disambiguation), etc. Tassedethe (talk) 21:13, 21 March 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Nationality vs born[edit]

Hi there, in regards to your move of Christopher Wood (Australian cricketer) to Christopher Wood (cricketer, born 1986) ‎(standard dab), I would argue that the born XXXX style should only be used when the nationality style is still ambiguous. The main reason is that much much more people would know the nationality, rather than the year of birth. If there were 2 or more Australian or English cricketers, then I'd be fine with using the year of birth, but this is unnecessarily obscure disambiguation, IMO. I am curious about the rationale of moving Dave Rothenberg (broadcaster) to Dave Rothenberg. Prior to writing the article and in researching the details of it, I noticed there were two other articles referring to people with similar names.

  • David (1988 film) - an article about a film about a living person whose father set him on fire
  • David Rothenberg - another biographical article referring to a musician

Consequently, when I posted the article, I deliberately posted it with some disambiguation in the article name. I'm curious why this wasn't appropriate.

Thanks for pointing out those other articles. I moved the article as Dave Rothenberg was not taken, i.e. it wasn't an article itself or a redirect to another article. The other articles do not indicate that either of those people was known as "Dave" so in those circumstances a WP:HATNOTE is a much better way to point people to those articles. I have added appropriate hatnotes. Tassedethe (talk) 00:51, 18 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Could you undelete two albums, please?[edit]

In January 2015 you deleted Postcards (Sparkadia album) and The Great Impression as "A9" because at that point there was no article about the band Sparkadia and the albums appeared non-notable. A previous article on the band had been deleted as copyvio, but looking into it the band seems notable and I have created a new sourced, non-copyvio, stub for the band. Several of the songs from the albums have articles (eg Jealousy (Sparkadia song)), which were until just now doubly orphaned - no article about the album nor (till a minute ago) about the band.

Could you perhaps undelete those two album articles? Both seem to have charted, and there is now an article about the band.

I know nothing about the Australian alt-pop scene, I just came across this while stub-sorting a stub created at Postcards (song) which led me to the Postcards (disambiguation) where I noticed the redlink for Postcards (Sparkadia album), and wondered whether it could have a blue link to the band, etc. PamD 22:19, 21 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Done The first album does have a source, but The Great Impression is completely unreferenced. Tassedethe (talk) 02:15, 22 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks. I'll add refs when I'm not on mobile. PamD 04:11, 22 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Gareth Morgan (athlete) listed at Redirects for discussion[edit]

An editor has asked for a discussion to address the redirect Gareth Morgan (athlete). Since you had some involvement with the Gareth Morgan (athlete) redirect, you might want to participate in the redirect discussion if you have not already done so. Link repair and honorifics in titles[edit]

Hi there. I noticed some of the link repair that you have been doing at the 'List of Fellows of the Royal Society elected in XXXX' lists (e.g. [8]). I've noticed this and I think it is a problem with all those lists (there are a lot of them). I'm still not entirely happy that all those lists got created, but as they are there is there a quicker way to fix the links in those lists? The full listing appears to be at Category:Lists of Fellows of the Royal Society by year. Also List of Fellows of the Royal Society by election year and Template:Fellows of the Royal Society and Template:FRSyears. Do you think all those 'by year' lists should be created (it seems it was not finished)?

I think they have some purpose. Those other lists are fairly long. One interesting thing is that the source for the by year lists seems to be different i.e. it seems to include the full name of the Fellow. Which of course leads to the high number of redlinks. The other question I had was about honorifics in article titles. I've known for a long time that honorifics shouldn't exist in titles (I think baronets are an exception), but I think this still happens regularly because people copy what they see (and don't realise that baronets are an exception). Anyway, I noticed you moved Sir Wykeham Leigh Pemberton to Wykeham Leigh Pemberton. I also realised that it is possible to do a search to find articles with 'Sir' in the title and exclude the baronets. The search is "intitle:Sir -intitle:baronet". The results are here. There are 870 results there, compared to 3,513 if you just search for 'sir' in the title. Flicking through that list, I found Sir Peter Michael and Sir Thomas Drew. Not so sure about Sir Anthony Keck (MP). I think Sir Robert Pattinson and Sir Dominick Browne might be examples of articles that need renaming? Sir William Galloway, Sir Christopher Robinson, [[Sir William Shelford], and so on. Though looking at Wikipedia:Naming conventions (royalty and nobility) and the current discussion on its talk page, I see that things are not that clear. I will ask more over there. I think you have accurately summed it up. I know there have been lots of discussion in the past. In my view modern people with Sir, e.g. Sir Peter Michael, should definitely be at a standard disambiguated name e.g. Peter Michael (engineer). I don't think it's as obvious for more historical figures. Tassedethe (talk) 16:05, 2 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Seth Goldman[edit]

Okay so I found the old DAB page you made for Seth Goldman looking over it might be best to get rid of it since one of the 2 people has been afd (and has a speedy for it now). Wanted to point this out to you! Wgolf (talk) 18:37, 7 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]

 Done. Thanks. Tassedethe (talk) 23:47, 8 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]
