@Bgwhite: Hey now, I didn't yell at you and I'd like to offer my sincere apologies if you took it that way. I think the best way to go about it is to make the fix and leave a gentle talk message including the diff. It shows people what the mistake was and how it's fixed and it doesn't revert other things that took place in that edit (I was making changes to comply with WP:DABPRIMARY and your undo reverted that). I'd be surprised if you've been consistently yelled at for simply explaining a rule to someone... Maybe you just had a string of bad luck. Thanks for your work! Thanks for doing this and closing the RfD. A long time ago, some editor suggested to me that it's better to advise on the proper course of action and let the editor do it themselves, rather than doing it for them, so that inexperienced editors get to see how things are done. I thought that was good advice, so now it's usually how I address these sorts of requests. I just thought I'd share the advice with you; our colleague Anomalocaris is very obviously not a newbie. @Anomalocaris: a lot of these cases qualify for WP:G6 speedy deletion if the redirect has no history. You can use {{db-move}} to shortcut the process. Ivanvector 🍁 (talk) 17:30, 29 January 2016 (UTC)
@Ivanvector: Hmm, that's interesting advice. I've thought that doing something for someone once shows them exactly how to do it, so they can actually see how it's done and they'll have a reference to use in the future. An analogy would be a teacher doing an example problem before students are turned loose to do their assignment. Doing it this way also closes the wrong forum discussion faster so others don't have to waste time with it. I'd be curious to know which philosophy is "better." Next time I see this situation, I'll do it your way, at the very least to see how it works, and I'll go from there. Thanks for the note! -- Tavix (talk) 18:43, 30 January 2016 (UTC)

WikiCup 2015 March newsletter

That's it, the first round is done, sign-ups are closed and we're into round 2. Forty-seven competitors move into this round (a bit shy of the expected 64), and we are roughly broken into eight groups of six. The top two of each group will go through to round 3, and then the top scoring 16 "wildcards" across all groups.

Twenty-two Good Articles were submitted, including three by Connecticut Cyclonebiskit (submissions), and two each by Denmark MPJ-DK (submissions), Zanzibar Hurricanehink (submissions), Florida 12george1 (submissions), and New South Wales Cas Liber (submissions). Twenty-one Featured Pictures were claimed, including 17 by There's always time for skeletons Adam Cuerden (submissions) (the Round 1 high scorer). Thirty-one contestants saw their DYKs appear on the main page, with a commanding lead (28) by Wales Cwmhiraeth (submissions). Twenty-nine participants conducted GA reviews with Lancashire J Milburn (submissions) completing nine.

Hi, remember those Main Page redirects (that I had trouble to nominate. I have found a similar set of those that point to Wikipedia, and I think they should be dealt in the same way. Untitled Redirects

What do you think about making a request at MediaWiki talk:Titleblacklist regarding "untitled"? It could be shown that they are consistently deleted at RfD. It is easy to make a request to create a page with "untitled" in it if needed (e.g. one listed at untitled). Best Regards,—Godsy(TALKCONT) 00:19, 14 April 2016 (UTC)

I'd be against that, believe it or not. If you check out the prefix index for "untitled" and the Untitled disambiguation page, there are a lot of legitimate articles and redirects. What I'd like to see happen instead is to crack down on is deleting "untitled" articles before they become redirects, a la WP:HAMMER. Now, I would've just nominated these types of redirects for WP:G6, but they've been objected to in the past (eg: Nyttend wanted to keep ROH's Untitled PPVs), so they technically wouldn't be "uncontroversial" maintenance. -- Tavix (talk) 00:50, 14 April 2016 (UTC)
If we have an article about such a topic, it's entirely reasonable to have "untitled" in the article name. I agree with Tavix that the problem is the inclusion of articles about such topics; the presence of "untitled" in their names isn't a problem. Nyttend (talk) 01:06, 14 April 2016 (UTC)

@Deryck Chan: Yes, but FAMA is the first result when one searches for 農夫 on Wikipedia. I almost always do at least a basic search before nominating a redirect and I did't do that this time. To make it clear, I laughed genuinely at your wit and I am glad my feed joke was taken well, what a serious place Wikipedia can be sometimes and serious but well-humoured discussion I always think is better, I am sorry to labour the point, but things so easily go awry when written; yours didn't except I got the wrong guy giving the punch and credit where it's due, when you set up a joke and it is not knocked down it is more disappointing. Use your best judgment

WHat do you think I am doing old bean? Am listing stacks at CSD, retargeting and doing so for other obvious ones, the ones I bring to RfD because I have enough judgment to know I can't judge it. Apparently wrong, but you can in fact see that "Nuestra Senora de Candelaria Parish Church (Mabitac)" is retained. That's precisely why I always read each RFA before I give my vote. If your intent is to continue to building the project with tools you acquire you have my support. I've seen far too many admin editors who found themselves the target of harassment because they didn't quite understand the purpose of getting them in the first place. Allow me to impart the words of wisdom I received from the puppy after my RFA passed – nine long, sordid, I-should-have-found-a-better-hobby years ago:
  1. Remember you will always protect the wrong version. (I got nothing here. It's inevitable.)
  2. Remember you must always follow the rules, except for when you ignore them. Without exception, you will pick the wrong one to do. (See #5.)
  3. Remember to assume good faith and not bite. Remember that when you are applying these principles most diligently, you are probably dealing with a troll. (You'll attract many more of those now, because mop. They must like to drink the dirty water in the bucket.)
  4. Use the block ability sparingly. Enjoy the insults you receive when you do block, because really, what else is there to live for?
  5. Remember that when you make these errors, someone will be more than happy to point them out to you in dazzling clarity and descriptive terminology. It will not be a personal attack because we are admins and, therefore, we are all rouge anyway.
  6. Finally, remember to contact me if you ever need assistance, and I will do what I am able.

Congrats on the RfA

I heard via another user late last night that your RfA succeeded. Well done and you will be excellent at it. Apparently my advocacy created some kerfuffle but I was deliberately standing off looking as I didn't want any accusation of WP:CANVASSing beyond saying that you didn't, I imagine that comes from the four or five personal attacks I get every day for listing Neelix redirects at CSD so my name is now "known". Oddly, the licence I granted to Wikipedia does not exclude me suing for libel and since I use my real name yet I "blacken" another user's name who I don't even know his real name, I am the one who can take any other Wikipedian to court if I find a personal attack against me. Odd, that. I don't mean you, we always argue WP:CIVILly at RfD and I don't know how to measure it but I bet it is about half and half who "wins". Or, I just simply resign and then the Neelix list will never get finished because nobody else is diligently doing it. I am trogging through them nobody else is and yet get personally attacked usually four or five times a day. Don't bother me that much what are they going to do come to Hungary with a brick to throw it through my window? But, yes, it hurts sometimes when all I am trying to do is make the encylopaeidia better. I'll keep going with them since the general consensus seems to be that is the right thing to do. CfD deletion

Do you mind undeleting Category:1315 in the Old Swiss Confederacy? That one needs another CfD; it wasn't a part of the actual nominated categories and was improperly listed as one of the ones that would be emptied. It's not empty. I don't understand this edit summary or your removal of the CSD. There are 2 articles on the dab page, one at the primary topic. So the dab page is an unnecessary dab page and should be CSD'd. What's the problem? PamD 06:44, 4 June 2016 (UTC)

Certainly. The rules stated at {{db-dab}} states: a disambiguation page which either disambiguates only one extant Wikipedia page and whose title ends in "(disambiguation)" (i.e., there is a primary topic); or disambiguates no (zero) extant Wikipedia pages, regardless of its title. Shin Min-a (disambiguation) disambiguates between two pages, so it doesn't fit either criterion. I still think it should be deleted via WP:TWODABS, but it's not speedy-able. In this case, the WP:PROD works fine, and gives others a chance to find more links. -- Tavix (talk) 11:56, 4 June 2016 (UTC)

  • Yes, Godsy, you would be correct. I thought moving the essay would be a better solution than having a CNR, and didn't notice the MFD until a bit later. I think RFD has evolved to the point where people might be more accepting of the essay, at the very least as a rebuttal to WP:CHEAP (which is also an essay). I wanted to practice using the history merge tool, and the first thing I thought of was using my talk page archives. In the past, I had archived by moving my talk page to an archive page, but I wasn't consistent about it and had re-archived a few things so the history wasn't in sync with the contents. I figured the easiest way to "fix" that would be by merging the history so that everything before an archive would be in my main talk page. -- Tavix (talk) 15:32, 7 June 2016 (UTC)

Pruned tree

I think your redirect is not really careful enough : if you read the target article, there is only one occurence of "pruned tree" and as far as I can see, no definition. This is data loss and this makes the article incomplete and unanderstandable. Typically in this kind of situation you want to know a definition for some term and ... you get redirected to the article you are reading. This kind of not careful merges hurts wikipedia articles about maths very bad. TomT0m (talk) 11:04, 12 June 2016 (UTC)

@JudeccaXIII: You don't need to have a redirect deleted to create an article, you can write one over the existing redirect (just edit the page, remove the contents, and start writing!) If you still want to wait, you don't have anything to worry about. Per WP:RGUIDE, any RFD that doesn't have any "keep" opinions will default to delete. @Another Believer: No problem! I got a little thumb workout in as I'm on my phone right now, but it's all good. In the future, I'd recommend tagging those redirects with {{R from song}} as that gives a little explanation as to why you're creating those redirects. As long as the article in question meets the standards at WP:GNG, it'll be fine no matter what kind of school it is. Director General of Indian Coast Guard

Is the draft for Director General of Indian Coast Guard accepted or not? I can see the article but I was not notified anything about the accepting it and on the talk page of the article, it shows as Draft-class article and I can neither see the article in articles created by me on X! rm superfluous heading

Why remove the header? DGG nominated the two redirects separately, so the "this redirect's entry" link on Cavalcading now goes to a section header that doesn't exist; it looks odd, but having two headers seems to me to be the simplest option for someone who reaches RFD from the redirect. I did that because that's the proper way to bundle on RFD. For example, if you bundle 40 redirects, it wouldn't make sense to have 40 headings. There should be an anchor within each redirect's entry, so it'll go to that redirect's line instead of the header when one doesn't exist. -- Tavix (talk) 03:26, 18 July 2016 (UTC)

@Djsasso: I was so confused waking up to a Hockey newsletter when I thought we weren't doing those. So I decided to look into it a bit more, and was even more confused to see it coming from someone who isn't active in the project and without any input from the project itself. I just found that he named himself WikiProject Co-ordinator as well on the project participant list. Such an odd thing for someone to do who has never been active in the project. History has repeated itself

So I created a redirect on the Chinese Wikipedia titled zh:中國共產黨亡 (Communist Party of China perish) and redirected it to the corresponding page to Hidden character stone. Minutes afterwards, it was take to the XfD (They don't have separate forums for AfD, RfD, TfD etc.). It was claimed that it was an attacking redirect, even though I said it is mentioned at the target, it was still described as attacking (zh:Wikipedia:頁面存廢討論/記錄/2016/08/16. It is a perfectly valid redirect, and someone even called it a misleading search term and the reader may be looking for WP:CRYSTAL information, I had a little argument at zh:Talk:中國共產黨亡 and User:南极的熊 said that people would look for info about when the CPC collapses rather than info on an obscure stone. How many differences are there! I have justification for creating such a redirect, the Chinese Wikipedia, in my opinion, is as corrupt as the regime is. It reminded me of the many discussions that have occurred here at RfD, especially the one at Wikipedia:Redirects_for_discussion/Log/2016_March_1#Windows_Technical_Support

Lip-synced

You deleted the redirect Lip-synced citing Wikipedia:Neelix mass deletions. That issue is about thousands of redirects, so it seems likely that this specific redirect was a baby thrown out with the bathwater. "What links here" lists four articles. @Art LaPella: No objection from me, I've went ahead and restored it. I've cycled though probably 10,000 redirects, so I'm bound to make a mistake every once in a while and delete one that's useful. Redirects

May I kindly ask you to stop creating make-work projects by deleting popular and useful redirects, please? I do understand the process and am aware of the fact that Bossanoven, a sockpuppet of TyrusThomas4lyf was once a productive editor in my area of interest. But a single glance of where his redirects lead should not be that much of a challenge. For example if SS-Scharführer redirects to Scharführer, The Holocaust in German-occupied Poland redirects to The Holocaust in Poland, and Thomas Toivi Blatt redirects to Thomas Blatt deleting them inevitably produces redlinks showing up in multiple articles and therefore would need to be recreated. Removal of William Lawton Page

I believe the page to be of important informational interest and should be re-instated if possible, or that improvements be made to address concerns you have about the content. William Lawton is an important community activist working to help many families in Southeast Asia and Papua New Guinea.

In my opinion the page on Mr. Lawton and his background was not promotional, was not conflicted and provides information on an important public figure whom is helping over 150,000 families through POGE. Plus his achievements such as helping to set up the central bank of China, The People's Bank of China, make him notable.

Please also go to the Facebook page for POGE: https://www.facebook.com/pogecorporative page and review the important work he is doing to educate people from the war torn island of Bougainville. Deleting the William Lawton page on Wikipedia means that the Wikipedia users will not have information about this important public figure.

There was little discussion of the removal, so it is not clear why the page was removed.

  • The reasons for deletion are listed at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/William Lawton, which basically come down to notability concerns. Check out WP:GNG when you get a chance. For there to be a Wikipedia article on a subject, there needs to be significant coverage in reliable sources that are independent of the subject. It was determined that William Lawton didn't meet those standards, with most of the sources not showing significant coverage of Mr. Lawton. we can't go by intrinsic importance, because who are we to judge intrinsic importance. We're not experts. We have no way of evaluating whether this work is significant or trivial. So we have to go by the sourcing: it reliable sources treat him as important, then we can make an article. There is one shortcut that is often helpful: a major national level award. Typically, footballers need to have played in one of WP:FOOTY's list of fully professional leagues to have an article on Wikipedia. It was determined at WP:Articles for deletion/Sean Gannon (footballer) that he does not meet the criteria for inclusion at this time. If you'd like to appeal the decision, see WP:DRV. Yes, I am aware of that, however footballers may also meet the WP:GNG criteria, and in this case (as shown by the links I have presented) I feel Gannon passes the test.
