Welcome![edit]

Hello, TerraVanStern, and welcome to Wikipedia! Thank you for your contributions.

I noticed that one of the first articles you created or edited was Draft:Terra Vanzant Stern, PhD, which appears to be an article about yourself. Creating an autobiography is a common mistake made by new Wikipedians—as this is an encyclopedia, we wouldn't expect to have an article about every contributor. Your user page, however, is a great place to write about yourself, making sure to stay within user page guidelines. Just click your user name at the top of the screen when you are logged in, and edit it normally.

The page you created about yourself may well be deleted from the encyclopedia. If it is deleted and you wish to retrieve its contents, don't hesitate to ask anyone from this list and they will copy it to your user page. If your contributions to an existing article about yourself are undone and you wish to add to it, please propose the changes on its talk page.

Help request[edit]

Heading added ~ ToBeFree (talk) 20:38, 14 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Hi my name is Margi White and I was trying to submit an article about my boss, Terra Vanzant Stern - is this NOT acceptable? Plus I used TerraVanStern as my user name which is why I think it looked like I was writing about myself but now I am a little confused where my user page is as it says there isn't a user page with that name. Any help appreciated, Thank you. — Preceding unsigned comment added by TerraVanStern (talkcontribs) 20:14, 14 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Margi White / TerraVanStern,
Thanks for asking. As you have correctly noticed, this is not acceptable; please find different topics to contribute about. If you absolutely have to, please see the standardized advice below and carefully adhere to the requirements of WP:PAID, Wikipedia's paid editing disclosure policy. Wikipedia is not a platform for promotion.
If you are interested in contributing to the encyclopedia productively and without a conflict of interest, you're welcome to have a look at:

Managing a conflict of interest[edit]

Information icon Hello, TerraVanStern. We welcome your contributions, but if you have an external relationship with the people, places or things you have written about on Wikipedia, you may have a conflict of interest (COI). Editors with a conflict of interest may be unduly influenced by their connection to the topic. See the conflict of interest guideline and FAQ for organizations for more information. We ask that you:

  • avoid editing or creating articles about yourself, your family, friends, colleagues, company, organization or competitors;
  • propose changes on the talk pages of affected articles (you can use the {{request edit}} template);
  • disclose your conflict of interest when discussing affected articles (see Wikipedia:Conflict of interest#How to disclose a COI);
  • avoid linking to your organization's website in other articles (see WP:Spam);
  • do your best to comply with Wikipedia's content policies.

In addition, you are required by the Wikimedia Foundation's terms of use to disclose your employer, client, and affiliation with respect to any contribution which forms all or part of work for which you receive, or expect to receive, compensation. See Wikipedia:Paid-contribution disclosure.

Also, editing for the purpose of advertising, publicising, or promoting anyone or anything is not permitted. Thank you. ~ ToBeFree (talk) 20:32, 14 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Username change required[edit]

Welcome to Wikipedia. I noticed that your username, "TerraVanStern", may not meet Wikipedia's username policy because you are using someone else's real name as your username. If you believe that your username does not violate our policy, please leave a note here explaining why. As an alternative, you may ask for a change of username by completing the form at Special:GlobalRenameRequest. Thank you. ~ ToBeFree (talk) 20:41, 14 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Help me![edit]

It was reommended that I choose a different user name. I wasn't trying to impersonate my boss I just thought since the articles I wanted to write were about her or our company it would be easier to remember. How do I change my user name or should I just start over? Also, from some of the responses it sounds like someone on your staff CAN post an article about our company and more specifically about my boss and our product, Leaner. How does it work, how much money do I pay and to whom? There a lot of people who sell LSS but our product is different and we are Federal government contract. Our company has been around a long time. Please advise as to next steps ... thank you

Please help me with... changing my user name and if all the people who are writing me saying they can get something posted about our company are legitimate

You don't need to use a help me template every time. Please read WP:COI first, followed by WP:CHUS for your username. I think it's important you understand the purpose of Wikipedia and perhaps that will better answer your questions above. Wikipedia is also not edited by staff, we are volunteers and do not accept payment to create content. Praxidicae (talk) 21:21, 14 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]
You've been told how you can request a username change above- you may visit Special:GlobalRenameRequest. That requires providing an email; if you haven't and don't wish to do that, you may make a request at WP:CHUS. 331dot (talk) 21:22, 14 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]
  • Third parties claim to offer Wikipedia editing services. However, those are not encouraged by Wikipedia. They must comply with the same policies that you must comply with(WP:COI and WP:PAID) and despite what they claim can make no guarantees, such as writing an article that will not be deleted. Be wary about handing any money over to someone. 331dot (talk) 21:24, 14 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Where to go from here[edit]

Hello, welcome to Wikipedia. I'm glad you're excited to help out here.

  1. To start with, you can use this link to request the username change. Lots of us do use our name, many more don't.
  2. Wikipedia is a volunteer service. Anyone can create an article. It is a free (both gratis and libre). If you do decide to hire someone to work on articles though there is a required paid-contribution disclosure policy. You will also be frowned upon strongly for writing an auto-biography or working on an article (uncompensated) that you are closely connected to. These are considered a Conflict of interest.
  3. All articles on Wikipedia have a few things required of them.
    1. The biggest stumbling block is they must be notable. People and companies have their own requirements. This is because we don't allow original research.
    2. Further the content must be verifiable and we require citations to reliable sources to show this.
    3. Finally all articles must maintain a neutral point of view.
  4. If you believe that there is significant coverage in reliable sources on the subjects you want written about the best way to do it is to disclose any conflict of interest and head over to Articles for creation to begin the process.

I hope this helps you understand a bit more about how Wikipedia works, and how you can get an article written on something you care about. Jerod Lycett (talk) 21:41, 14 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]
