IP range block

Hello, I just noticed that you blocked my IP for block evasion. could you explain? L293D () 12:11, 24 February 2018 (UTC)

It's because your IP address is part of a range of IP addresses which has recently been used for that purpose by a long-term block evader. It's not aimed at anyone else, and as a logged-in user I hope the block should not affect you; the block itself will expire in a few days. -- The Anome (talk) 19:31, 24 February 2018 (UTC)
I was just curious. I generally would'nt have noticed but I'm taking a wikibreak so I noticed it when I logged out. L293D () 20:02, 24 February 2018 (UTC)

172.58.0.0/16

Normally I stop by and ask before ripping up someone's block, so I apologize for not doing so, but the amount of collateral on 172.58.0.0/16 is astronomical. In two days, there were 26 different people requesting accounts that have had to wait to be processed by a CU. I can't even get the normal 3 months CU gives, the range is so busy. Sadly mobile range blocks are like this. If I can help in any way in targeting a particular user, please let me know. -- Amanda (aka DQ) 11:27, 26 February 2018 (UTC)

Thanks for doing the unblock. I will try to be more careful regarding blocked ranges/times in the future, and would welcome any help you can give me on this. -- The Anome (talk) 19:25, 26 February 2018 (UTC)

Editing News #1—2018

Read this in another languageSubscription list for the English WikipediaSubscription list for the multilingual edition

Did you know?

Did you know that you can now use the visual diff tool on any page?

Screenshot showing some changes, in the two-column wikitext diff display

Sometimes, it is hard to see important changes in a wikitext diff. This screenshot of a wikitext diff (click to enlarge) shows that the paragraphs have been rearranged, but it does not highlight the removal of a word or the addition of a new sentence.

If you enable the Beta Feature for "⧼visualeditor-preference-visualdiffpage-label⧽", you will have a new option. It will give you a new box at the top of every diff page. This box will let you choose either diff system on any edit.

Toggle button showing visual and wikitext options; visual option is selected

Click the toggle button to switch between visual and wikitext diffs.

In the visual diff, additions, removals, new links, and formatting changes will be highlighted. Other changes, such as changing the size of an image, are described in notes on the side.

Screenshot showing the same changes to an article. Most changes are highlighted with text formatting.

This screenshot shows the same edit as the wikitext diff. The visual diff highlights the removal of one word and the addition of a new sentence. An arrow indicates that the paragraph changed location.

You can read and help translate the user guide, which has more information about how to use the visual editor.

Since the last newsletter, the Editing Team has spent most of their time supporting the 2017 wikitext editor mode, which is available inside the visual editor as a Beta Feature, and improving the visual diff tool. Their work board is available in Phabricator. You can find links to the work finished each week at mw:VisualEditor/Weekly triage meetings. Their current priorities are fixing bugs, supporting the 2017 wikitext editor, and improving the visual diff tool.

Recent changes

  • The 2017 wikitext editor is available as a Beta Feature on desktop devices. It has the same toolbar as the visual editor and can use the citoid service and other modern tools. The team have been comparing the performance of different editing environments. They have studied how long it takes to open the page and start typing. The study uses data for more than one million edits during December and January. Some changes have been made to improve the speed of the 2017 wikitext editor and the visual editor. Recently, the 2017 wikitext editor opened fastest for most edits, and the 2010 WikiEditor was fastest for some edits. More information will be posted at mw:Contributors/Projects/Editing performance.
  • The visual diff tool was developed for the visual editor. It is now available to all users of the visual editor and the 2017 wikitext editor. When you review your changes, you can toggle between wikitext and visual diffs. You can also enable the new Beta Feature for "Visual diffs". The Beta Feature lets you use the visual diff tool to view other people's edits on page histories and Special:RecentChanges. [18]
  • Wikitext syntax highlighting is available as a Beta Feature for both the 2017 wikitext editor and the 2010 wikitext editor. [19]
  • The citoid service automatically translates URLs, DOIs, ISBNs, and PubMed id numbers into wikitext citation templates. This tool has been used at the English Wikipedia for a long time. It is very popular and useful to editors, although it can be tricky for admins to set up. Other wikis can have this service, too. Please read the instructions. You can ask the team to help you enable citoid at your wiki.

Let's work together

  • The team is planning a presentation about editing tools for an upcoming Wikimedia Foundation metrics and activities meeting.
  • Wikibooks, Wikiversity, and other communities may have the visual editor made available by default to contributors. If your community wants this, then please contact Dan Garry.
  • The <references /> block can automatically display long lists of references in columns on wide screens. This makes footnotes easier to read. This has already been enabled at the English Wikipedia. If you want columns for a long list of footnotes on this wiki, you can use either <references /> or the plain (no parameters) {{reflist}} template. If you edit a different wiki, you can request multi-column support for your wiki. [20]
  • If you aren't reading this in your preferred language, then please help us with translations! Subscribe to the Translators mailing list or contact us directly. We will notify you when the next issue is ready for translation. Thank you!

Autoblock

This block has caught the Wiki Education Dashboard behind an autoblock. While I definitely agree that the username block is appropriate, would you have a problem with me removing the autoblock and account creation block? We will get in touch with the instructor in the class ASAP and make sure that the have a conversation with the student who created that username. Ian (Wiki Ed)/Guettarda (talk) 14:38, 15 March 2018 (UTC)

I went ahead and removed the autoblock, since it was only affecting the dashboard.wikiedu.org IP (not the main IP for that user) and was blocking everyone else's OAuth edits.--ragesoss (talk) 15:16, 15 March 2018 (UTC)

I saw that you had soft blocked this account. You may have missed that he had been writing about a company of the same name, and hadn't given any undertakings not to continue to do so (indeed the suggested new user name indicates that's very likely), so I've changed to a hard block pending any assurances regarding writing about his company.

If you were aware of the article, and felt that a soft block was still appropriate, feel free to restore your original soft block, cheers Jimfbleak - talk to me? 11:12, 21 March 2018 (UTC)

Thanks. I think your hard-blocking of this account is fine: if they want to appeal the block, they can do so. Until then, they can stay blocked. -- The Anome (talk) 13:14, 21 March 2018 (UTC)

Nomination of Pseudomathematics for deletion

A discussion is taking place as to whether the article Pseudomathematics is suitable for inclusion in Wikipedia according to Wikipedia's policies and guidelines or whether it should be deleted.

The article will be discussed at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Pseudomathematics (2nd nomination) until a consensus is reached, and anyone is welcome to contribute to the discussion. The nomination will explain the policies and guidelines which are of concern. The discussion focuses on high-quality evidence and our policies and guidelines.

The file File:TrafficRanktoJune2004.png has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

Old orphaned esoteric file.

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, pages may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated files}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the file's talk page.

Please consider addressing the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated files}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and files for discussion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. ~ Rob13Talk 17:42, 14 April 2018 (UTC)

Mysterious

It's mysterious you chose to become directly involved in a content dispute without knowing all the facts and apparently reading only one (difficult) editor's version of events. I'm probably walking away from it in disgust, but I don't think you made the right decision and have contributed to a bigger mess that may never get untangled. -- GreenC 14:30, 18 April 2018 (UTC)

Bot - Myanmar -> Burma?

Hi. Any chance the bot could replace coord missing|Myanmar with Burma? Category:Myanmar articles missing geocoordinate data has 13 members now so it's a reasonably common mistake to make. Another one, though less pressing, would be to bump any straight "New York" -> "New York (state)". TIA Le Deluge (talk) 11:04, 7 June 2018 (UTC)

PS I've just created Category:Chennai articles missing geocoordinate data if that needs to be added to a list somewhere, there's about 3000 articles in the Tamil Nadu parent category so there should be scope to knock some of them into it. Le Deluge (talk) 11:52, 7 June 2018 (UTC)

Reply to Talk Page Comment

Hello The Anome! Thank you so much for taking the time to respond regarding the sadomasochism article. I am an advocate of information accessibility, so I had every intention of treading lightly. There were two activities done with my edit, only one was the warning, the other was to move the image away from page-top to prevent it being shown on a casual pop-over preview when the link is referenced on hover-over. I strongly believe the latter to be an important edit; the picture was still available lower in the article, in an appropriate section. Unfortunately after your reversion, that problem still existed. I have now moved the image into the "Historical Perspective" section on that page without any "warning" at the top of the page. LaEremita (talk) 22:21, 11 June 2018 (UTC)

UranusTravel block

On User:UranusTravel, why a softerblock? The user is blatantly promoting her business, with a username to match.I would have spamublock, so I wonder. --- Alexf(talk) 12:56, 30 June 2018 (UTC)

Some people mistake Wikipedia for a Facebook-like platform, and start by trying to create a "company account". I generally put this sort of non-aggressive user page advertising down to pure ignorance about the rules, WP:AGF, and softerblock it, which usually resolves the problem without any further issue. Aggressive, repeated, or out-of-userspace promotion, or attempts to circumvent the block gets an instant spamblock. -- The Anome (talk)

Wrong coordinates

On 15 July 2009‎ your bot added completely wrong coordinates to the article Dolní Pohleď and during the 9 years, nobody detect nor fix the mistake, even though Wikidata cointains correct coordinates. You should run complete revision of local coordinates comparing them with Wikidata coordinates. --ŠJů (talk) 21:39, 13 August 2018 (UTC)

Thanks for spotting that. I've checked the coordinates on Wikidata, and they are indeed correct; I've copied them to the article. Yes, a reconciliation of Wikidata coords with Wikipedia coordinates is indeed part of my long-term plans. -- The Anome (talk) 07:57, 14 August 2018 (UTC)
