Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. Wikipedia appreciates your help. Article Feedback deployment

Hey Bellum Stellarum; I'm dropping you this note because you've used the article feedback tool in the last month or so. On Thursday and Friday the tool will be down for a major deployment; it should be up by Saturday, failing anything going wrong, and by Monday if something does :). re: Mass Effect comics

I agree, it's pretty awful. I think it should be merged with the Mass Effect series ASAP. By the way, you mean ME3: Citadel (not ME2: Citadel) right? It's cool you're working on it. My priority for now is to focus on ME2 related articles: I will try to promote ME2 to FA status and then probably work on Overlord and Kasumi - Stolen Memory, but first ME2 needs to be a FA. Regards --Niwi3 (talk) 21:12, 16 March 2013 (UTC)

Nice work with Garrus Vakarian

I didn't read it to comment on it, but carry on. --Niemti (talk) 21:41, 17 March 2013 (UTC)

Talk:Mass Effect (comic)#Move?

I suggest we have consensus supporting Talk:Mass Effect (comic)#Move? as a move. Are there other issues outstanding warranting further review? – Conrad T. Pino (talk) 19:05, 5 April 2013 (UTC)

I think it might be wise to let Niwi comment on your opposition first. I'm still on-the-fence about whether it should be folded back in, m'self.
Aside from that, nothing immediately pressing comes to mind (though there usually is, knowing life), but I am pondering about adding a main image to Characters of the Mass Effect universe. If you have anything to say, it'd be appreciated. Currently, no one's responded at all and it's making me feel lonely. – Bellum (talk) (contribs) 19:17, 5 April 2013 (UTC)
Waiting is fine if pointless; one opposition amongst three fails consensus.
Already said. – Conrad T. Pino (talk) 19:46, 5 April 2013 (UTC)

re: Mass Effect 3 endings article

In my opinion, the ME3 article is a total mess. I think it's better to improve the main article first and then see if it's really necessary to create a separate article for the endings of the game (when I was improving the ME2 article nearly a year ago, I wasn't thinking of a list of accolades). Besides, I believe that a list of ME3 DLC has more priority because the table of contents is ridiculously huge. Also, weren't you working on a ME3: Citadel article? --Niwi3 (talk) 11:15, 21 April 2013 (UTC)

Wikipedia is volunteer work and I'm not forcing you to work on anything specific, so take your time to work on whatever you think is most urgent :) --Niwi3 (talk) 11:32, 21 April 2013 (UTC)
I will help you with the list of ME3 DLC when I have time (if you let me edit your subpage). Right now I'm a bit busy. --Niwi3 (talk) 11:59, 21 April 2013 (UTC)
Hey, I've just finished the article and I think it's ready. Also, I don't think it's really necessary to include the multiplayer store packs. Feel free to edit the page if there is a problem or something wrong. When you're done, you can create it. Cheers. --Niwi3 (talk) 19:55, 3 May 2013 (UTC)
Just merged some sections. The simpler, the better :) --Niwi3 (talk) 13:38, 4 May 2013 (UTC)

Sure, just make sure you have sources. You can also use high quality articles as examples (see Master Chief (Halo)). --Niwi3 (talk) 13:52, 4 May 2013 (UTC)

No problem. And excellent work with the article by the way. I think the name "Tali'Zorah" is perfectly fine; the simpler, the better (as long as there is no ambiguity). Anyway, keep up the good work :) --Niwi3 (talk) 20:40, 14 June 2013 (UTC)

re: Stolen Memory

Thank you for your excellent contribution to the Mass Effect 2: Arrival article, much appreciated! I've made some copy-edits, hope you like them. If not, this is a wiki and you can change them. As for Stolen Memory, yeah it's definitely going to be my next "major" contribution once the article I'm currently working, All Hands on the Bad One, is promoted to GA status. Actually, I already downloaded the logo that I will use for the article and was also finding some sources, so thank you for the information because I don't own the artbook. I'll definitely include that! I'm currently busy with work so the article might take me quite a while to complete. But if you find more information about other ME2 DLCs (including Zaeed, Firewalker, etc...), please let me know. Thank you.--Niwi3 (talk) 09:57, 11 July 2013 (UTC)

I've added the info about the Shadow Broker's face, which I though was interesting. Thanks :) --Niwi3 (talk) 11:59, 11 July 2013 (UTC)
Sure. I think I would give it a B rating, mainly because it's pretty comprehensive and has really good references. Now, the main problem I see is that it contains some fancruft in several areas. For example, does the general reader really need to know that Tali's default appearance can be changed in both ME2 and ME3? If the content only has value to people actually playing the games, it is unsuitable. Also, I think the article has unnecessary plot details that need to be cut down. Always remember the bigger picture: an article should be readable and interesting to readers who are not familiar with the topic. But otherwise it's a fairly decent article, way batter that most VG character articles. Hope it helps :) --Niwi3 (talk) 18:33, 11 July 2013 (UTC)

Cole MacGrath and Miranda Lawson

Hello, Bellum Stellarum. I've ended on your User:Bellum Stellarum/Sources after taking a look on your really, really impressive work on Elizabeth (BioShock) and on Madison Paige. And, I've noticed that Cole MacGrath and Miranda Lawson are articles that you plan to creat (if I deduced right). I'm talking about this two among many others because I have a similar page, and I've gathered sources to Cole and Miranda but I really don't know if will use those any day. So, I'm letting you know it and maybe you can find some helpful source (or not) to use. Cheers, Gabriel Yuji (talk) 03:24, 20 April 2014 (UTC)

It's nice cause (as I said) I somewhat abdicated from trying to create such articles. And, it's good that at least someone can do it, and the sources I collected was not pure waste of time. I don't know Mordin Solus, and in fact I don't know virtually anything about Mass Effect (and that's one of the reason I gave up on Miranda), but I have sure you will do a great work. Interview

Hey! Thanks for responding to my post on the Star Wars project page. Here's the questions I have. If you would prefer, you can email your answer to me via Wikipedia's email service. Also, if you are unsure of what one question means, feel free to ask for clarification, and if you don't want to answer one, you can skip it. Feel free to 'talk my ear off'; the longer the better! :)

1) When did you start editing Wikipedia and why?

So this account was created about the start of 2013, from what I remember, but I've been editing here and there for a while, and I couldn't really tell you when that started. It's not the first account I've had, actually, though the previous one I've pretty much retired. No worries there, by the way, you can probably take it implicit from me actually mentioning it that I was in pretty good standing, but, you know, I was young, and no one wants the things they said when young traced back to them, even if they said perfectly sensible things. Known fact of life. Maybe one day I'll retire this account and begin again. Again.
As for why, well, Wikipedia was there, I was bored, there were errors and incomplete things, and I like digging up info about things I like. Everyone else may as well see, eh?

2) Does Wikipedia play a big part in your life/identity?

It's not a major part of my identity, nor is it a major part of my life. I try to strictly keep it as a hobby, an ode (of love or hate or ambivalence) to whatever subject I'm working on.

3) What initially drew you to the articles that you edit? What draws you to edit “Star Wars” articles?

A lot of it is personal interest, and a love of fiction -- it's probably why most of what I've done has been character articles. Granted, I am limited somewhat by the need for actual sources and so on, which is why I've done more Mass Effect articles than, say, Dragon Age ones, despite me preferring the latter. But personal interest is important, and it's why I made the push for a fairly hefty article on Kreia (a somewhat controversial character I really love), rather than any of the myriad gaming icons. Writing a Wikipedia article gives me an excuse to find out a lot about the history, creation behind a character, and how they were received, while at the same time letting me process all my thoughts about it (and maybe gain some new perspectives).
So, as to Star Wars, well, simply: I like Star Wars. I'm also pretty knowledgeable about it, inescapably so. I was part of a generation, and probably a lot of future generations will be similar, where Star Wars was just there. Han, Luke, Leia, Chewie, "I am your father", scenes, visuals, twists, planets, pacing: I knew Star Wars before I'd seen Star Wars, hell, I may as well have always watched it before I could ever have seen it. The prequels were still coming out around this time, and I remember seeing Revenge in the cinema. So, it's interesting. A memory before I could have the memory, really.
Also the Lego Star Wars, Battlefront and Knights of the Old Republic games were pretty cool. True fact.

4) Why do you feel the desire to collect disparate info and then collect it into one (or more) article?

I think I kind of answered this in the previous question.

5) What does the term ‘canon’ mean to you?

Generally, at least as far as Star Wars goes, we tend to think of two "canons" -- the old Legends and the new canon. More personally, to most mainstream audiences I imagine there's simply the actual films -- they happened, and the rest of the stuff is just peripheral stuff out there that isn't as real. I'd argue that in the end it's actually more like an near-endless interlocking layers of canon, where each individual work has its own little canon, which are made up of both itself and various other elements of other works' canons.
See, Empire Strikes Back, right? It forms part of basically every canon to follow it, it's part of the overall film canon, and most of it is canon to Return of the Jedi. But, Return of the Jedi isn't canon to Empire. In Empire, Luke doesn't kiss his sister, he kisses Leia, who has neither been written as his sister, is not planned to be his sister, nor is by anything indicated within the film itself his sister. But in Jedi, Luke has kissed his sister, if that makes sense. Or, if you prefer, since it's never mentioned in Jedi, that didn't really happen according to the film, but it happened in the overall canon.
I might've made that sound more complicated than it was, but honestly it's something that most people do a bit. And I should note, this way I'm using the word "canon" is pretty divorced from any classical meaning canon held in literature.
Outside of Star Wars, another good example of just how flexible "canon" can be is Doctor Who. General character arcs remain consistent in Who, and so in theory do a lot of the encounters along the way, yet trying to look at it from a logical view, especially from over long time periods, will cause the whole thing to pop like a balloon.

6) When you’re making an article, is it important to ‘stick to canon’, or use only legitimate, canonical sources?

A character might exist in the overall canon, but they also exist outside that, both in whatever individual canons I just made up now, and in the public eye and critical view. So, I don't think it's that important to stick to canon. Noting where they stand in overall agreed continuity can be useful for offering complete information, but ultimately, characters are developed over time in all their appearances, new authors bring new takes, and that happens regardless of any canon status.
Example: Darth Vader. When introduced, he's considered and portrayed as this basically evil, threatening figure. And of course, Empire makes him Luke's father, and then Jedi introduces this idea of him having a good spark within him, making him a bit more a conflicted character. Fast-forward, and the general depiction of Vader capitalises a lot on elements of self-loathing and general denial, as well as whatever motives lie behind him. And you see this reflected in the newer canon works, The Clone Wars and the Star Wars: Darth Vader comic, but it's a characterisation developed and crystallised both in these and non-canon works (Darth Vader and the Ghost Prison springs to mind, though I've never had the chance to actually read it, so I might be off-base).
And, of course, that applies to most fictional concepts, not just characters, from locations to species to beyond.

7) In your opinion, what determines canon (or, “who has the final say”)?

So, I proposed there a kind of weird infinite canon, made up of books that make series that then are altered within other books to form some sort of weird mutant whole that's merely one aspect of all of them. So, back to the individual canon thing, that depends on the material, how it's made. In a Star Wars novel, that's probably primarily the author, though Lucasfilm probably oversaw things so ultimately the final say might rest with them. Dynamics are a bit different now, but essentially similar, the Story Group or whatever ensuring the post-Lucas canon remains consistent. But you can't really change the canon of previous books, you can only really change the future direction of books to come, their canon. To all the stories that interacted with the Republic Commando novels, they remain canon to them, even if TCW kind of blew up the series with its pacifist Mandalorians and they weren't really canon to any future stuff.
I'm still cracking up over that, by the way. It's a weird development, especially in Star Wars where generally a lot of the iconography stays the same or similar across eras, the Empire, the Republic, Mandalorians. I haven't finished TCW, but it's interesting, in a way.

8) Do some editors of pop culture articles guard their articles, (or “prevent the canon from being tainted”)?

Yeah, probably, at least to guarding the articles. It's very easy to feel a certain sense of ownership for anything you've written, even if not fully consciously. With Star Wars, the canon's always had a lot of questions, so I think there's been a bigger tendency by editors to sort of sidestep the issues. This was, after all, a massive franchise, with varying levels of canons, which weren't always regulated, and that was before the advent of gamechangers like the prequels. Still, there's a certain view that the new canon is "right", and I remember making this edit a bit ago, essentially changing "Sheev Palpatine" to an alternate name in one canon, and I stand by it. And this wasn't really ever reverted, per se, but over time one relatively uninvolved user might've made one edit, then another one made another, and now Palpatine is back to opening with "Sheev Palpatine", blankly.

9) If there’s an edit war and you want to get involved, generally, how do you determine what side to choose?

I generally try not to get too involved in edit wars. Obviously which side I take is going to be very case-by-case, and in edit wars over grammar or format I tend to not care overmuch, so this is a question that's hard to answer. Sometimes the best option lies somewhere in between whoever's warring (though not always), and if there's an edit war going over for example the addition of unsourced content, it can be worth just having a look for a source yourself.

10) In your opinion, do certain Wikipedia editors have more power than others? If yes, how so?

Naturally, yes. Obviously, an admin can block people (if not without reprisal should they go on some powermad rage trip), but on the general editing side there's little to stop the little implicit things. If a very new user or especially an IP editor makes an edit, it will come under more scrutiny than if I make one, and if I take any liberties with sourcing, it's more likely to be let slipped. If you get a bad reputation, for whatever reason, of course even edits that are probably alright might similarly end up under heavier scrutiny and reverted. And then of course very active and involved editors will probably get more leeway than me, and probably few want to revert an admin. And that goes into discussions as well, where people can kind of lay more weight to things depending on who's saying them.
It's not always fair, and it's not always something you can really blame anyone for, but that's the way it ends up.

11) How do you gain the trust of other editors?

Well, it helps to be polite. Not necessarily in the sense of being all formal and "ah, yes, madam, I will be on this Good Article review post-haste, if you will respect my pardons for I am off for the weekend". But, you know, assume the best on their part, don't get angry (there is very little that can be solved by ALL-CAPS, and even less that can be solved by calling people arsewipes), and be generally nice. Outright helping an article for something they like can get you some love, too. Don't really have one direct answer for this question.

12) How does an editor gain expertise/become an “expert” in a specific subject?

I'd be wrong to say there's any one thing, go do that, you will become an expert. It probably goes without saying that if you're working on a history related article, studying history isn't going to hurt. As far as Wikipedia goes, practice and observation are probably two key bits. Like I said, no real one thing to do, but actual editing is pretty informative providing you manage to not get scared off (which is easy to do -- Wikipedia is neither accessible nor always that welcoming), and checking out how other (good-quality) pages are set out and written can make for a good starting base. Reading the rules is, as you might guess, always nice, though I wouldn't ask anyone to have an academic knowledge of all the rules or spend hours poring over guidelines. But having a basic grasp of what "notability", "real-world perspective", and "verifiability" mean goes a long way.
Even better is to understand why those are there, the general principles. After all, policies are there for reasons, not to blindly followed simply because, and I'm all for a little rule-bending here and there when appropriate.

Thanks so much!--Gen. Quon (Talk) 19:27, 13 February 2016 (UTC)

Thanks so much for these very thoughtful and useful answers! I have one final question. Does Roland Barthes' idea about the death of the author mean anything to you in regards to canon? Put another way, what say does the author have in regards to their work?--Gen. Quon (Talk) 22:16, 14 February 2016 (UTC)
@Gen. Quon: Sorry for the late response, interesting times, also got a new game. So, death of the author. I think this depends a bit on the work itself. A lot of ideas tend to go for this one size fits all approach, ignoring that different works are made for different purposes. Now the exact purposes behind each and every work is potentially infinte, from being self-expressive, to existing as exploration of themes, to educate, to worldbuild for worldbuild's sake, to simply being there for entertain, etc. etc. (and obviously none of what I listed there was exclusive). So that can alter just how viable the idea of ignoring the author and their intent is (e.g. what if they write it in a first person perspective and allude to their own life?).
Now, with Star Wars, you're dealing with something that has, until fairly recently, been pretty creator-owned. That's not necessarily "George Lucas does everything", but even without being in the director seat for Empire and Jedi, Lucas has had a heavy control over it, and Lucasfilm is getting its name from him. However, Lucas has pretty clearly gone back and forth on things, from originally planning 9 episodes, no 6, yadda yadda yadda. There's probably a school of thought out there that would discard the new Disney films from this conceptual core Lucas canon, and it's honestly not one I can too heavily criticise. You can sell the franchise, but you can't properly sell an idea, right? Copyright, law, and artistic ownership don't always go together.
So, anyway, authorial intent can be useful in explaining or shedding light to the text, and if it's clear that the text was written with their interpretation in mind it can be pretty definitive, but later authorial intent can't override actual events in the text, or really retcon the work. And if the author somehow botches what they meant, and the work doesn't match their views, they can't change the text in hindsight (they could make altered new texts, but not quite the same thing) but we can say they did a poor job of expressing their ideas, and that the text has in a sense failed. – The Millionth One (talk) (contribs) 01:50, 25 February 2016 (UTC)
Very useful, and thanks for taking time to answer these questions. I really appreciate it.--Gen. Quon (Talk) 05:45, 25 February 2016 (UTC)

I originally uploaded a different image so I can't speak for what's there right now, but cheers for the heads up anyhow. Assuming no one else changes it or reuploads it in the interim, I'll probably look into it / find a replacement after I've got some more free time. – The Millionth One (talk) (contribs) 23:10, 10 October 2017 (UTC)

Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. An automated process has detected that when you recently edited Deus Ex: Human Revolution, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Adam Jensen (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). Such links are usually incorrect, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of unrelated topics with similar titles. (Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.)

Hi, I'm RonBot, a script that checks new non-free file uploads. I have found that the subject image that you recently uploaded was more than 5% in excess of the Non-free content guideline size of 100,000 pixels. I have tagged the image for a standard reduction, which (for jpg/gif/png/svg files) normally happens within a day. Please check the reduced image, and make sure that the image is not excessively corrupted. Other files will be added to Category:Wikipedia non-free file size reduction requests for manual processing. There is a full seven-day period before the original oversized image will be hidden; during that time you might want to consider editing the original image yourself (perhaps an initial crop to allow a smaller reduction or none at all). A formula for calculation the desired size can be found at WP:Image resolution, along with instructions on how to tag the image in the rare cases that it requires an oversized image (typically about 0.2% of non-free uploads are tagged as necessarily oversized). Please contact the bot owner if you have any questions, or you can ask them at Wikipedia talk:Non-free content. See User:RonBot for info on how to not get these messages. Pages for Mass Effect Characters

Hi, thank you for linking me to your draft page and helping me with the source references for the Dragon Age characters.

I've noticed that you already have pending drafts which are work in progress for Liara T'Soni and Thane Krios. Would you like me to pick up where you left off and complete the character pages? Haleth (talk) 07:36, 3 March 2020 (UTC)

In all likelihood I won't be finishing them up any time soon, so you're welcome to edit/finish them as you wish. (That goes for anyone reading this and any of my drafts, by the by; I'm not particularly possessive of them.) My only request is that if you directly copy/paste what I wrote for Thane into another article, please link to the draft in the edit summary. Or if you accidentally forget to do that, no biggie but mention it on the talk page. – The Millionth One (talk) (contribs) 14:49, 3 March 2020 (UTC)

Endings of ME3

Hi there, long time no chat, I've noticed that you've been online again lately, and thanks again for sharing your sources with me. I've more or less finished up all of the viable articles for Mass Effect characters and races which could be created with existing sourcing. I just thought I'd ask if you don't mind me using material from your Endings of Mass Effect 3 draft, as part of a larger Controversies surrounding Mass Effect article I intend to work on. I'm not sure if the other editors will accept a standalone ME3 ending article due to content fork concerns, but I've noticed that there are a few articles which broadly cover controversies surrounding an individual video game or series are not only viable, but could be sustained as good articles.
